I have a LOTT of sketches I could post rn but these 2 are recent and I'm fond of them <3 Steph costume ideas and Tim/Damian cringe bickering inspired by Batman: Brave and the Bold #18!
#dc comics#dc#damian wayne#stephanie brown#tim drake#been drawing more self indulgent doodles lately which is nice#these r sort of a part of that lol#i drew the tim and damian one back when that stort actually came out it's. definitely interesting#if only for portraying Tim and Damian as equally flawed individuals (contrasted to the zdarsky batman for example)#AND unintentionally highlighted how low-key embarrassing it is that Tim is still robin. it's got a part two coming out sometime this month#and the Steph doodle was inspired by me rereading her batgirl run since the trade came out! and remembering how hard Lee Garbetts art slayed#but yeah while i figure out what to post and how- have this#the tim and damian one got like 3 likes on the bird app meanwhile the Steph one is at 1.3k w 93 bookmarks#say what you will about the bird app but when you get the right ppls attention that place does NOT have to be batboy centric#(or soley batboy centric. i like them a lot (damian mainly) but the variety is nice compared to here)

This is great! Though question: How are the plumbers doing in Gotham? Or even any of the trades that use water as a tool? (Cutting metal needs some sort of coolant that is mixed with water if done repeatedly, cleaning in general with mopping or rinsing things off, etc) Do they have to ship in water? Is there a max amount of time bottled water can be in Gotham before it counts as Gotham Water TM?
…. Do any of the bats include a water gun in their utility belts to slow/stop runners?
Mermay Special Prompt 3
“Are you kidding? No one goes to Gotham, that place is like,” Aquaman made a motion with his hand, a not-quite grimace on his face. “Like things should not be living in the water, like it should be impossible, and things should be dead, but they aren’t and it’s like, like the equivalent of an undead apocalypse over there!”
Bruce rolled his eyes behind his cowl, taking a sip of his coffee as the others continued drinking. Socialize, they said, it’ll be fine they said. Well excuse him, but the waters weren’t that bad. Sure there were always dumped bodies, and chemicals from the rogue attacks, but it was far worse at one point.
One thing he’ll always be relieved for is how the… curse (thank you broken statuette back in the beginning of his vigilante career that fused with the other many curses of Gotham) made the people of Gotham actually care about the waters around them.
Though also, he couldn’t help but thank anything that might be listening for the fact that the curse only interacted with Gotham waters, because losing legs with any risk of a drop of water would be downright annoying.
“No dude, you don’t understand, no one goes there for a reason! That shit is horrific- someone saw a big thing with bits of rebar stabbed straight through it and still chased after a big alligator-thing!” Oh. Oh that had been him. Oops. Hopefully his kids didn’t find out about this, but they were probably already on the cameras. Dammnit.
#*wheeze* h20 au#long post#merfolk au#what about the trades?#tap water is used often and constantly#do they get deliveries of water like they use to do milk bottles?

thinking about fox getting his first poll card after the vode get citizenship. the guard scattered after sithsplosion day, but he and a score or so that were functionally useless without each other, like nervous space greyhounds with military training, all ended up bundled together on some planet in the mid rim.
he’s been working on a book about his years at the senate. no one knows about it aside from thorn, who has been checking his basic, and advising him where he needs to wind the reveals back a little because libel. the rest of the time he does payroll for a number of small businesses, picking and choosing his hours, and delighting in sending invoices for his business: the shiny security fund, he’s called it, to continue the tradition in a more official manner.
(when they’d been on triple zero, the fund had been for rations. blankets. bacta. they’d conned credits from tourists and stolen them from senators and turned those credits into hope for the poor bastards shipped to the city that ate shinies before they could ever earn paint. these days, the fund was for whatever his guard wanted. aside from a pony. fox couldn’t figure out where hound would keep the pony.)
the book had been born from two lists. one was the blackmail and gossip the guard had collected during their stint on coruscant; that was where thorn needed to check for dangers, but since most of those senators had died in sith-related incidents, or had been jailed when the media got hold of their dealings, all fox was doing was providing context.
the other part of the book was fox’s List. thire sometimes called it a manifesto, because he had been studying for his degree and liked to show off occasionally. the list was a suggestion of changes to the republic, some small, some large. it was a silly fancy of fox’s, as the whole book was, but if he couldn’t indulge himself in his own karkin’ book then they might as well have punted him off the high levels back on coruscant.
yet for all that he’d settled—and paid taxes, even—fox hadn’t felt part of the citizenship of the planet. then the poll card had arrived. and suddenly he mattered in a tangible way. just like the bothan baker next door did. just like the twi’lek downstairs, the one with the noisy kriffin’ speeder, did.
thorn found fox in the kitchen, still staring at the scrap of card. he rapped his knuckles on the doorframe.
“you okay there, chief?” he asked. he’d been trying out alternatives to ‘sir’. “noise complaint again?”
fox shook his head. he didn’t look up. “voting thing. there’s an election.”
“oh! yeah, we got ours yesterday. are you— what’s that face you’re making. i don’t think i like it.”
fox raised his head and gleamed his smile at thorn, who backed away slightly, one hand drifting to where a blaster once hung. fox’s eyes felt very wide. he jabbed the poll card like a vibroknife.
“do you know what this means?”
“democracy comes in two postal batches?”
“no! well, yes, apparently, and that’s inefficient, but— no!” fox jabbed the card again. “this means i am a citizen and i am about to make that a senator’s problem. where’s my manifes— list, thorn? it’s time for an update.”
#fox supports democracy if it means his representative can be cornered into intense conversations#he’s not going to enjoy the gatekeeping#but that’s what his series of essays are about#fox is out here writing the gossip girl version of the supercommando codex#fox makes so much money and when the assassins start coming for him he immediately starts on the sequel#gay space pirates trading copies of his meditations#deepcut black sails reference for you; hondo ohnaka had a hand printed copy#sorry thorn#commander fox#coruscant guard#rook writes things#putting my blorbo in situations#star wars#the clone wars

@jamjoob ‘s harley for another trade 🤭
[id: It’s a drawing of Harley Quinn where she is depicted as a Black woman with pale skin and locs which are tied into pigtails. She wears a black sports bra, a mesh top, pink-purple jeans, a large belt, a pair of orange-lensed goggles, and a jacket which is half pink, half black. In the drawing, she is holding a bat which reads “GOOD NIGHT” over her shoulders. /end id]

Wayne Family Adventures literally had 2 entire seasons worth of healthy dad Bruce who sits down and talks with his kids. He brought Jason down from a nervous breakdown. He got Damian a dog. He told Tim that it's Batman who looks out for Robin. He felt incredible guilt over missing even one of Cass' recitals. He plays with the kids, he takes care of them, he talks with them about family and what they mean to him. He puts in the work.
And yet we still have people coming out of the woodworks to claim that being an asshole is "integral to his character" the one time he says fuckshit to the kids.
Look I came from from multiple abusive households (yeah that's right I'm pulling this card). I know what that looks like. This ain't it. What Bruce said is fucked up, no doubt about it. But this is after potentially years of kindness and heartfelt discussions. Saying something fucked after all that healthy behavior isn't abuse, it's a call for help. And that's what the kids are trying to do. He's scared. He even admitted to Damian that none of it matters as long as they're safe.
This arc isn't to point and go "oh look at how horrible Batman is and how he treats his family". It's showing how grief and trauma can twist the people you love into something that hurts, and the effort and pain needed on both sides to fix that (like in the Jason episode, how he lost control and almost hurt Dick and then told them to take care of Bruce). Keeping this idea that violence and abuse is integral to Batman and his relationships is the same mentality that has kept main timeline Bruce in that behavior for the last god-knows-how-long.
#hence why steph and cass call him out and fight him#why jason says hes still mad but cares#why tim and damian try to warn him#they care about him. they dont want him to walk blindly into this and they hate what its doing to him. this arc is gonna end with him embra#ing his family and proudly using them to help take down the jokers plan#and ill get emotional when it happens#batman wayne family adventures#batman wfa#batman#batfamily#batfam#batman fandom#the wayne family#wayne family adventures#bruce wayne#webtoon#dc comics#dc#the waynes#caped crusader#DISCLAIMER❗NO HATE MEANT FOR ANYBODY WITH THIS OPINION#i hate this idea but i dont mean to be hateful towards anybody#im just really snarky by trade

The Interview with the Vampire movie had its 30th anniversary this week so here is the portion of Tom Cruise’s 1994 Interview Magazine interview in character as Lestat
#interview with the vampire#IWTV#the comment about NOLA was because at the time there was a lot of hype in the press and trades about religious groups protesting the set#because of the ‘demonic’ aspects of the film#and then protests from fans of Rice and Lestat who were on the warpath at the behest of Rice herself#and there was apparently concern that it might all go too far given the ire directed at Cruise from so many different groups#so that’s what Tom is referencing there and the fact that none of that ended up happening

playing AAI ahead of the rerelease and I just felt the need to shout about this wonderful detail about Franziska’s (left) and Edgeworth’s (right) phones
obviously this game is a product of its time, but even for 2009 Edgeworth’s phone is a bit dated. it’s plain and utilitarian, and it is clearly meant for little more than phone calls. texting on that thing would be a chore (edit: likely impossible). Franziska’s, however, is more modern, suited to her aesthetic tastes, and even flips open sideways to reveal a full keyboard. I think this is mostly a bit of inconsequential world-building, but if nothing else, I think it gives credence to one fun thought: Edgeworth only makes phone calls, while Franziska prefers texting.
#AAI giving me the details I crave#such as: what does Franziska’s cell phone look like? how does Edgeworth refer to himself in his own head?#thank you AAI artists for getting correct the fact that Edgeworth is very utilitarian about the tools of his trade..#AAI spoilers#not really but just in case#miles edgeworth#franziska von karma#c thinks

Something I love about Leo is that, canonically, he IS capable of cooking, he’s just completely incapable of using a toaster. He’s banned from the kitchen not out of an inability to make edible food, but because being within six feet of a toaster causes the poor appliance to spontaneously combust.
#rottmnt#rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles#rottmnt leo#rottmnt headcanons#rise leo#all Leos mortal enemy: toasters#side note but thinking about this aspect of Leo’s character really has me wanting to make a deeper dive into Leo as a Jack of All Trades#because he has aspects of this all throughout the series#where he can do many things he’s just not the best at it#like he can cook but he’s no Mikey#he can - canonically - rewire an *AI PROGRAM* but it goes very wrong#he can lift both Mikey and Raph simultaneously but he struggles to do so where his other brothers don’t even break a sweat#bro is a Jack of All Trades Master of None frfr#and Leo is even more interesting with this in mind because he uses what he CAN do so well#it’s like how he can see his family’s strengths and weaknesses and knows exactly how they work#his skill set is made way better simply by his personal USE of those skills not by the skills themselves#portals and teleportation are only op if you know how to weaponize them#given time he ABSOLUTELY could#okay I shut up now this was supposed to be about toasters#but yeah all the boys have a bunch of skills under their belts outside the typical ones#but Leo stands out to me for having skills his other brothers have but to a much lesser degree in a lot of cases#and he works with what he has so well that that is a skill in itself

The thing is there a million cute ways that Steve could meet Wayne without Eddie’s involvement, but only two ways that Eddie could meet the Harringtons outside of Steve:
(1) He’s their drug dealer
(2) Little tiny Eddie was riding his bike really fast and they pulled out in front of him. He crashed into their car. They yelled at him.
#take a walk with me#the second one happens#Eddie’s bike is broken beyond repair and he cries about it. Steve’s dad mocks him because he’s an asshole#Steve is in the backseat and he feels bad about his parents yelling and also embarrassed#after school one day he sneakily (like a ninja) follows Eddie home to see where he lives#the next day he drops his bike off out front of his house and bolts#the day after that: Eddie’s semi-fixed bike is in Steve’s garage with a note that says:#‘if you’re tailing someone maybe don’t do ninja flips on the way. also thanks! this is a trade. we’re even.’#Steve takes the bike to his mom and cries about how he ran into a tree so they buy him a new one#they had no idea what his bike looked like anyways#steve harrington#eddie munson#the harringtons#stranger things

HC that Crime Lord Red Hood routinely donates medical equipment, money, and well-trained black market medics (formerly employed by gang leaders he took down) to Leslie's clinic. He's also obsessive about updating or improving the generators at the clinic and wears her down in a way that Batman couldn't.
#There's a bit of an arms race and Leslie has to hire someone just to handle logistics and the excel-spreadsheet obsessed Bats volunteer#their services#There is a ton of new coverage about this and Leslie manipulates it to get more funding and shame some politicians#I say HC because I'm kind of at a loss re: what he does do as a crime lord aside from taking over the drug trade/murdering people involved#and sort of vaguely keeping kids out of it?#Maybe I've been misreading/don't remember right but most of the post UTH comics I read for Jason had him doing lots of other stuff (like#battling for the cowl) and I'm kind of making shit up for what he could've been up to#red hood#jason todd#batfamily#dc comics#batman#leslie thompkins

here have some Sadie Knox (my Courier Six) infodumping bc i am insane abt her rn
Sandra "Sadie" Knox / 5'2" / 34
Sandra Knox isn't her birth name, she got her first and last name separately from books she's read over the years.
Sadie is a scientist who worked as a courier and an overcharging con-artist repairman to save up caps to fund her research. She carries a notebook with her at all times, always scribbling down notes as it helps her think and process information.
Sadie is morally gray; a bit selfish and tunnel-visioned in her ways. Once Sadie has a goal, big or small, she’ll stop at nothing to achieve whatever it is. She has a unique way with words and can get you into trouble and out of it in the same sentence. This skill has saved her ass an insurmountable amount of times.
Due to her borderline extreme goal-contentedness, despite caring for those she loves and keeps close to her, she often comes off distant. Sadie has always had a rough time showing that she cares and her gestures can come off as awkward or forced. Her autism might be (is) partially to blame for this lol. Those willing to work past this awkwardness and allow her to adjust are rewarded with a ride or die friend for life.
She's got a reserve of pent-up rage. Though she can be quite irritable from minor conveniences [ex: she drops a pencil on the ground > emotional dysregulation from adhd rises > she's LIVID- ok she's fine now], she's not one to lash out at someone she loves. Her rage is kept internal and it weighs heavily on her shoulders.
Once speaking to Yes Man [before confronting Benny], she figures trying to get in on Benny's scheme is the opportunity she's been waiting for -- the prospect of a steady flow of caps excites her.
Oh and after her visit to BIG MT, she decides to help the Doctors by occasionally bringing them Mojave shit to research.
Sadie: look at the size of this legendary deathclaw hand. These things are large and terrifying, and despite the best efforts, nests continue to pop u-- Dr. Borous: the size of that hand.... Dr. Borous: it reminds me of my time in AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL, when RICHIE MARCUS took his HAND to my FACE and BEAT ME SENSELESS behind the school. the AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL-- Sadie: [patiently waiting bc she doesnt know when, or if, it is appropriate to intervene]
#im very brainrotted for my darling Sadie#fallout new vegas#fallout#sadie knox#courier 6#courier six#fallout oc#fnv#new vegas#ty for looking#also uhhh#if any mooties wanna do fallout art trades pls feel free to reach out at any time (even if we havent spoken b4!!)#im too nervous to ask outright / make a post or w/e#also probably bc of autism LAUGHS that seems to be a running theme today (and every day)#but yea pls feel free im so deep in the fallout brainrot it's unreal#i keep infodumping @ my gf and she has no idea what's going on aside from what ive told her LMAOOOO#me: 5 paragraph essay about benjamin gecko fallout#my gf trying her best to be supportive: that benny guy sure is The Character of All Time huh

About the entanglement of "science" and Empire. About geographic imaginaries. About how Empire appeals to and encourages children to participate in these scripts.
Was checking out this recent thing, from scavengedluxury's beloved series of posts looking at the archive of the Budapest Municipal Photography Company.
The caption reads: "Toys and board games, 1940."
And I think the text on the game-box in the back says something like "the whole world is yours", maybe?
(The use of appeals to science/progress in imperial narratives probably already well-known to many, especially for those familiar with Victorian era, Edwardian era, Gilded Age, early twentieth century, etc., in US and Europe.)
And was struck, because I had also recently gone looking through nemfrog's posts about the often-strange imagery of children's material in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century US/Europe. And was disturbed/intrigued by this thing:
Caption here reads: "Game Board. Walter Mittelholzer's flight over Africa. [...] 1931. Commemorative game board map of Africa for a promotional game published for the N*stle Company, for tracking the trip of Walter Mittelholzer across Africa, the first pilot to fly a north-south route."
Hmm.
"Africa is for your consumption and pleasure! A special game celebrating German achievement, brought to you by the N*stle Company!"
1930s-era German national aspirations in Africa. A company which, in the preceding decade, had shifted focus to expand its cacao production (which would be dependent on tropical plantations). Adventure, excitement, knowledge, science, engineering prowess, etc. For kids!
Another, from a couple decades earlier, this time British.
Caption reads: "The "World's globe circler." A game board based on Nellie Bly's travels. 1890." At center, a trumpet, and a proclamation: "ALL RECORDS BROKEN".
Same year that the United States "closed the frontier" and conquered "the Wild West" (the massacre at Wounded Knee happened in December 1890). A couple years later, the US annexed Hawai'i; by decade's end, the US military was in both Cuba and the Philippines. The Scramble for Africa was taking place. At the time, Britain especially already had a culture of "travel writing" or "travel fiction" or whatever we want to call it, wherein domestic residents of the metropole back home could read about travel, tourism, expeditions, adventures, etc. on the peripheries of the Empire. Concurrent with the advent of popular novels, magazines, mass-market print media, etc. Intrepid explorers rescuing Indigenous peoples from their own backwardness. Many tales of exotic allure set in South Asia. Heroic white hunters taking down scary tigers. Elegant Englishwomen sipping tea in the shade of an umbrella, giggling at the elephants, the local customs, the strange sights. Orientalism, tropicality, othering.
I'd lately been looking at a lot of work on race/racism and imperative-of-empire in British scientific and pop-sci literature, especially involving South and Southeast Asia. (From scholars like Varun Sharma, Rohan Deb Roy, Ezra Rashkow, Jonathan Saha, Pratik Chakrabarti.) But I'd also lately been looking at Mashid Mayar's work, which I think closely suits this kinda thing with the board games. Some of her publications:
"From Tools to Toys: American Dissected Maps and Geographic Knowledge at the Turn of the Twentieth Century". In: Knowledge Landscapes North America, edited by Kloeckner et al., 2016.
"What on Earth! Slated Globes, School Geography and Imperial Pedagogy". European Journal of American Studies 16, number 3, Summer 2020.
Citizens and Rulers of the World: The American Child and the Cartographic Pedagogies of Empire, 2022.
Discussing her book, Mayar was interviewed by LA Review of Books in 2022. She says:
[Quote.] Growing up at the turn of the 20th century, for many American children, also meant learning to view the world through the lens of "home geography." [...] [T]hey inevitably responded to the transnational whims of an empire that had stretched its dominion across the globe [recent forays into Panama, Cuba, Hawai'i, the Philippines] [...]. [W]hite, well-to-do, literate American children [...] learned how to identify and imagine “homes” on the map of the world. [...] [T]he cognitive maps children developed, to which we have access through the scant archival records they left behind (i.e., geographical puzzles they designed and printed in juvenile periodicals) [...] mixed nativism and the logic of colonization with playful, appropriative scalar confusion, and an intimate, often unquestioned sense of belonging to the global expanse of an empire [...]. Dissected maps - that is, maps mounted on cardboard or wood and then cut into smaller pieces that children were to put back together - are a generative example of the ways imperial pedagogy [...] found its place outside formal education, in children's lives outside the classroom. [...] [W]ell before having been adopted as playthings in the United States, dissected maps had been designed to entertain and teach the children of King George III about the global spatial affairs of the British Empire. […] [J]uvenile periodicals of the time printed child-made geographical puzzles [...]. [I]t was their assumption that "(un)charted," non-American spaces (both inside and outside the national borders) sought legibility as potential homes, [...] and that, if they did not do so, they were bound to recede into ruin/"savagery," meaning that it would become the colonizers' responsibility/burden to "restore" them [...]. [E]mpires learn from and owe to childhood in their attempts at survival and growth over generations [...]. [These] "multigenerational power constellations" [...] survived, by making accessible pedagogical scripts that children of the white and wealthy could learn from and appropriate as times changed [...]. [End quote.] Source: Words of Mashid Mayar, as transcribed in an interviewed conducted and published by M. Buna. "Children's Maps of the American Empire: A Conversation with Mashid Mayar". LA Review of Books. 11 July 2022.
Some other stuff I was recently looking at, specifically about European (especially German) geographic imaginaries of globe-as-playground:
The Play World: Toys, Texts, and the Transatlantic German Childhood (Patricia Anne Simpson, 2020) /// "19th-Century Board Game Offers a Tour of the German Colonies" (Sarah Zabrodski, 2016) /// Advertising Empire: Race and Visual Culture in Imperial Germany (David Ciarlo, 2011) /// Learning Empire: Globalization and the German Quest for World Status, 1875-1919 (Erik Grimmer-Solem, 2019) /// “Ruling Africa: Science as Sovereignty in the German Colonial Empire and Its Aftermath” (Andrew Zimmerman. In: German Colonialism in a Global Age, 2014) /// "Exotic Education: Writing Empire for German Boys and Girls, 1884-1914". (Jeffrey Bowersox. In: German Colonialism and National Identity, 2017) /// Raising Germans in the Age of Empire: Youth and Colonial Culture, 1871-1914 (Jeff Bowersox, 2013) /// "[Translation:] (Educating Modernism: A Trade-Specific Portrait of the German Toy Industry in the Developing Mass-Market Society)" (Heike Hoffmann, PhD dissertation, Tubingen, 2000) /// Home and Harem: Nature, Gender, Empire, and the Cultures of Travel (Inderpal Grewal, 1996) /// "'Le rix d'Indochine' at the French Table: Representation of Food, Race and the Vietnamese in a Colonial-Era Board Game" (Elizabeth Collins, 2021) /// "The Beast in a Box: Playing with Empire in Early Nineteenth-Century Britain" (Romita Ray, 2006) /// Playing Oppression: The Legacy of Conquest and Empire in Colonialist Board Games (Mary Flanagan and Mikael Jakobsson, 2023)
#mashid mayar book is useful also the Playing Oppression book is open access online if you want#in her article on slated globes mayar also mentions how european maps by 1890s provoked a sort of replete homogenous filling in of globe#where european metropole thought of itself as having sufficiently mapped the planet by now knit into neat web of interimperial trade#and so european apparent knowledge of globe provided apparently enlightened position of educating or subjugating the masses#whereas US at time was more interested in remapping at their discretion#a thing which relates to what we were talking about in posts earlier today where elizabeth deloughrey describes twentieth century US#and its aerial photographic and satellite perspectives especially of Oceania and Pacific as if it now understood the totality of the planet#ecologies#tidalectics#geographic imaginaries#mashid mayar
