The thing I love the most about the Hunger Games is Katnissā€™ character arc.
Katniss Everdeen in book 1 is like Harry Potter in book 7. That is to say, the Katniss we follow in THG is the strong and resilient fighter. She is brave and selfless and tough and she digs deep despite tremendous pain. She has already overcome the loss of her father and the dire circumstances of her youth. And the 74th Hunger Games should have been her boss fight.
The end of THG shows us a Katniss who is a champion, a winner, a Victor. It feels like we are at the triumphant end of a story. Until she is told that the Capitol is not happy.
In Catching Fire we learn about Katnissā€™ nightmares. We learn that she sometimes canā€™t look at Prim without seeing Rue. We see her relationships begin to strain and change.
Katniss finding out that she will be going back into the games is one of my all time favorite scenes. Because in THG Katniss is in Survival Mode from the second she steps onto the platform. She holds back her tears and tries to look indifferent for the sponsors. But in CF she shatters. She flees. She cries and drinks and screams. She isnā€™t strong or resilient or even a little brave. And you just donā€™t see heroes react like that in other stories. But you canā€™t tell me itā€™s possible to read that scene and not feel your own stomach twist at the thought of that reality.
When Peeta hits the barrier and his heart stops Katniss loses it. Itā€™s clear she knows about CPR from watching her mother, the same way she knew about blood poisoning and tourniquets in the last games, but it doesnā€™t even occur to her until after Finnick starts kissing Peeta. She isnā€™t sharp and quick and able to think on her feet. She is desperate to keep Peeta and the rebellion alive and that is it. People say that the victors keep Peeta alive because ā€œif they didnā€™t Katniss would kill everyone and then herselfā€ but Katniss knew her fate. She knew she wasnā€™t going to survive the arena. And she knew a life without Peeta was pointless. She would have ā€œstopped livingā€ like her mother.
When Katniss is rescued and Peeta is not, there was no ā€œwhat is the plan? How are we going to get Peeta back? How are we going to save him?ā€ There was only enough energy and emotion to try to claw Haymitchā€™s eyes out.
And then we get to Mockingjay. Iā€™ve heard people complain that they couldnā€™t get through the book because it was just Katniss sleeping all the time. But of course she is sleeping all the time. Of course she can hardly qualify to be a soldier. Of course she finds solace in Finnick and his rope tying.
She doesnā€™t assassinate President Snow on her rogue mission. She gets her friends killed. She canā€™t even save Prim. Katniss gets knocked out and wakes up with the War already won. She secures the safety of Panem for a time by killing Coin but even that is the act of someone who no longer cares for her own safety and well-being.
Iā€™m not saying she doesnā€™t do anything, she does an incredible amount for her mental/emotional state. But she isnā€™t Strong or Brave or Resilient. She doesnā€™t dig deep because even if she did there wouldnā€™t be anything left. She is completely broken.
That is what makes her epilogue so beautiful. Because at the end of her story she isnā€™t a Victor. She isnā€™t The Hero. She just, learns to be okay. She falls in love and finds peace and happiness and safety. I donā€™t know if I would say that she ever becomes unbroken but she picks up the pieces she can salvage and does her best with them.
Katniss Everdeenā€™s character arc is not one of Strength. There are many strong characters. It is a study of weakness and the beauty and love and community that comes from weakness.

H.G. Tannhaus: All my life, I've dreamed of traveling through time, to see what was and what will be. Stranger Jonas: You don't dream that anymore? H.G. Tannhaus: Dreams change. Other things become important. My place is not in the yesterday or tomorrow. Rather, it's right here. And now. -Dark (1x08)
The world was split by Tannhaus in the Origin World. His grief leads him to build a time machine. Is there any reason for him to take a step back from his involvement in time travel in the worlds of Adam and Eva? CHARLOTTE IS THE REASON. His place is right there in 1986 because of Charlotte. Her being given to Tannhaus is so important in both worlds. Not only is necessary for the existence of Charlotte, Elisabeth and Franziska, but it also prevents a bigger mess from ever happening. Charlotte's presence alone maintains the balance that makes everything possible in the show. If Charlotte were not given to Tannhaus in both worlds, what would happen? Would he just continue to split the world? Could the world become a crazy amount of small fragments? Would it be a loop of splitting the world until there was nothing left to split? THE WORLD SIMPLY CAN'T RETURN TO ITS ORIGINAL FORM WITHOUT CHARLOTTE.
Charlotte said once something along the lines that she felt the things that were happening had something to do with her. She was so right. Her presence in the life of Tannhaus is vital, and her parents were literally killing people through time because they loved her so much. Charlotte didn't have the scientific background of her grandfather or Claudia, nor the deep knowledge of time travel of Adam and Eva, but she was still one of the smartest characters in the show. I think Charlotte is a really great character who carries so much weight in the story.

a scribbling little rant about """""art tips""""" that infuriate me. hopefully i got my thoughts out in a way that makes sense
[image description: a four page comic about how gender is shown in art tips.
panel 1 shows various exaggerated examples of how artists divide male and female bodies, with men being depicted as strong and angular, and women being depicted as soft and curvy. on the bottom is the artist's sona, an axolotl with glasses named doc, is peaking out from below the background of the panel and saying "a slight bit of comic hyperbole notwithstanding, sentiments like this are very common with it comes to tips for beginner artists. and, while seemingly helpful at first glance, i something to say about any one of these that tries to define how "men" and "women" are to be drawn..."
panel 2 shows doc crumpling up the previous panel in his hands and looking crazed. he says "they're [bleep]in' scams! or, rather, they tend to do more harm than good..."
panel 3 has doc next to two diagrams of characters, the top having all 4 characters with similar body types, and the bottom having all 4 characters with different body types. doc says "setting aside the blatant misogyny, it's also just... repetitive and dull. by limiting the body types you draw by "male bodies" and "female bodies", you are not only severely limiting how visually interesting your designs can be, but also shooting yourself in the foot when it comes to improving at drawing anatomy. note how much more interesting it looks when you diversify bodies!"
panel 4 shows many examples of ways to diversify bodies, including disregarding gender when drawing bodies, diversifying shape language, playing with size and proportions, messing around with facial features and head shapes, and learning how to draw muscles and fat folds. at the bottom is doc giving a thumbs up and saying "don't let a bunch of old dead guys' ideas of gender and beauty weigh down your artistic potential! also, have fun!!" end id]

"I've been waiting for ages for somebody to unmask them."
Tumblr media
This moment tends to elicit negative reactions in a first read through, and I've got some opinions about why where Kabru is coming from here actually makes a lot of logical sense. So I thought I'd elaborate on that.
I think people hear this and go, "He thinks they must be hiding something because they gave money to someone? What a cynic." Or "he dislikes them because they did charity?? What's wrong with this guy!". And obviously, a lot, a lot is wrong with him. But I think this makes more sense than it seems at first glance! What people evaluating this judgement miss is why Kabru is paying attention to Laios and co to begin with.
Kabru knows of the Touden siblings because (he's a little bit of a stalker-) he is keeping an eye on all the relevant parties in events developing on the island, in order to be able to guide them to his preferred outcome. This includes adventurers because they are the ones actually exploring the dungeon! He's well aware that something as minor as internal tensions between party members could be key to the historical events that are developing. (He would love the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.)
Tumblr media
His desired outcome is that whatever the rewards are of breaking the dungeon's curse, whether that's kingship or the ancient elven secrets of dungeons, are claimed by:
A) a short lived person
B) Someone who will be a good, effective leader and/or use those secrets and the power they carry wisely, with foresight, and to establish a political bloc for short lived people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The person he can best trust to do this is, of course, himself. But due to his PTSD regarding dungeons and monsters, he's not able to develop the necessary skills to conquer the dungeon. Once he realises this, he starts looking for someone else who he can support to that end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But most of the adventurers don't have any intentions of conquering the dungeon, don't have the skills, or are unsuitable in other ways. In fact, it seems like some potentially suitable people are the Toudens. There are a lot of good rumours about them going around - they actually seem to have a very positive reputation! That's what Kabru means when he says "unmask".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So when Kabru is observing something like them giving money to an old comrade from their gold-peeling days, he doesn't consider it a problem because "they're giving money to this person who doesn't actually need it" or because they must have some dark secret if they act superficially nice. I think he actually understands this situation and what it implies about Laios (in particular) perfectly well.
Tumblr media
Laios and Falin gave money to an old comrade who got injured and couldn't work. That person then healed up but kept taking their money. Then he used the money to start smuggling illicit goods to the island.
Tumblr media
The key is that for Kabru, the problem here is the same as with the corpse retrievers - people using the dungeon's resources to fuel dangerous, selfish, or violent pursuits cause problems for the island, attract more criminals and people with motives other than breaking the curse, and increase the chances of the whole situation ending in tragedy.
Tumblr media
Kabru is willing to work with the Shadow Lord of the island if it gets him to his goal - he isn't scrupulous - but the criminal element of the island increasing is something he sees as a major issue.
Also, when you're evaluating someone as a candidate for power, riches, secrets, potentially kingship - then being curious about how the money you give to people is going to be used is kind of a relevant trait!
Interpersonally, Kabru's actually very easygoing - I mean, Mickbell isn't exactly an upstanding guy, is he! But Kabru likes him and they get along well. These traits wouldn't be a problem at all in a friend, or a comrade, or someone Kabru was confident he could use. But he can't get a handle on Laios, and Laios is someone who has the potential to be a major player!
On Laios' end, this is the same as with the marriage seeker who joined their party. She kept asking for things and he gave them to her, because he tries to be nice to others. He even gives her money! It's the exact same thing.
Tumblr media
That's fine, but it became a problem because he basically wasn't interested in her motives, didn't notice she was trying to manipulate him, and it also didn't occur to him that the other party members would notice or be affected. We can assume the situation with the gold peeler is the same. When Kabru says that "It's not that they're bad people, they just aren't interested in humans," he isn't wrong.
Tumblr media
The extent to which this is true of Laios is linked to his autism imo, (because it isn't just disinterest - he genuinely isn't able to notice nonverbal cues that people are lying to him or have ulterior motives) but to a greater or lesser extent I think it's a very common trait. Most people aren't actually that interested in other people who aren't close to them. Kabru is the weird one here. It isn't an issue except as a leader - which is why we see an immediate comparison to the Island's Lord, because that's how Kabru is evaluating them.
And disinterest in/lack of ability with people to the extent Laios exhibits it, it does, actually, make him a worse leader... it's just that as we see in the story, people can help him out. The rest of the party tell him the marriage seeker is taking advantage of him so he tells her he can't give her special treatment anymore. They're pissed and it's a crisis point - he couldn't have recovered their trust without Marcille and Falin - but that's exactly the point. With Marcille and Falin, he was able to recover their trust.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And he has other good traits that make up for it, such as his intelligence, strategic knowledge, open-mindedness and sense of fairplay.
Kabru doesn't disqualify Laios as a candidate based on what he sees about him from afar, though - he still tries very hard to get close to him, obviously hoping that if he manages he can steer Laios to defeat the dungeon and make up for his lack of people-skills in the aftermath. (Which... he does eventually achieve that goal!) He completely fails until the events of the story, so... definitely I think "They just aren't interested in humans" could also partially be a stung reaction to Laios' complete disinterest in him.
Tumblr media
Anyway, that's my read on what exactly Kabru's "issue" with Laios is. Obviously, once he does find out what Laios' true nature is like - about his love for monsters - he develops an entirely new set of fears about Laios' priorities. But since Laios kept that a secret until the start of the story, he has no idea of that yet.
Given all that, I think it's interesting that he says that he doesn't think that the Toudens are suitable to defeat the dungeon, and that he's hoping they'll turn out to be the thieves. As some of his few potential candidates, people who he thinks may play a big role in the island's future, you'd think he'd hope they would be good people!
Tumblr media
I suppose it's better, in his eyes, because it means that he's involved in something "interesting". They haven't just had their stuff stolen by regular criminals (boring, puts them further away from his goal) - they've been caught up in the beginning stages of "a historic event". The desperate and dwindling group forgetting morals in their quest to retrieve their lost comrade probably appeals to his sense of melodrama. Because he also just... loves drama.
Tumblr media
Despite it being "uglier than anything he was expecting", he still pursues Laios as the person he wants to conquer the dungeon pretty much as soon as it becomes clear that he won't be able to do it himself and they are out of time. That's because... well, to be fair, there aren't any other options. And he fits standard A: he's short-lived!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and Kabru still hopes he can fit standard B, too, and be persuaded to use the power he wins for good. No matter how many nightmares he has about Laios, or whether he thinks about killing him. He doubts him, but ultimately he puts his faith in him and seems happy after the manga's ending that he made the right decision.

The tragic thing about him is that he goes through cycles of doing this, this isn't the first time he's thrown all of himself into someone in the hopes that that someone will save him from this darkness that's in him.Ā And I think all the characters in this show have that to an extent and battle with degrees of that and Armand is like particularly devastating ā€˜cause you really want to help him but then he does not help himself, so it just makes you love and loathe him and I know people like that in my life where you're just like, ā€˜I really want to love you but you're making it so difficult because you're not seeing the patterns in your behaviourā€™.Ā  [x]

Bad: I donā€™t think people understand the effect QSMP had on some of the streamers in terms of likeā€¦ The real raw mental impact, so Iā€™m gonna set the stage for you. [...] Imagine that you were given a friend to play Minecraft with ā€” like your best friend ā€” BUT if this person dies, if they die in the game, you never get to talk to them again. Can you imagine what thatā€™s like?
Bad: If you did not live through the QSMP, if you did not live through that, it almost sounds like, crazy. But I donā€™t think people realize how much of a joyous experience the Eggs were. They were SO awesome! They were literally so awesome to just hang out with and spend time with.
Bad: Iā€™m not saying I regret it. To this day, I loved the experience. Iā€™d do it all over again in a heartbeat. Even knowing how everything went, I would still do it all over again. [...] I would still do it all over again, because ā€” even knowing like, all the trauma and sufferingĀ and stuff like that ā€” because it was justā€¦ It was just that fun, it was just that fun.
Tumblr media
Earlier today during his stream, Bad shared his experience and thoughts about the Eggs and the significant emotional (and traumatic) impact they had on him and his fellow QSMP members.
This clip a very edited-down version since his commentary was ~13 minutes long, so I highly recommend checking out Bad's VOD if you have the time. (Timestamp: 47:36 - 1:00:14)
[ Full Transcript ā†“ ]
ā€”ā€”ā€”
Bad: To be fair Chat, I really think the QSMP... I don't think anyone really can relate to it, Chat. It's something that's so... I've told people this before, likeā€“ but it's hard to understand. Right? Like...
Where was I? Sorry Chat, I'm losing my train of thought. Look, let me explain Chatā€“ here's the dealio, ok? Here's the dealio, and this is what I mean when I say like, it's important to keep this in mind, Chat. Ok? It's important to keep this in mind:
I donā€™t think people understand the effect that the QSMP had on like, some of the streamers, in terms of likeā€¦ The real raw mental impact, so Iā€™m gonna set the stage for you. This is the analogy Iā€™ve given to every person who Iā€™ve like, shared this with. Imagine you meet somebodyā€“ [He hears a strange noise] What the fudge was that? Did you hear that?
Anywayā€“ Chip! The story I was just relaying to Chat, Chip, was this: I was sharing this story with them, I saidā€“Ā  I was giving them an analogy.Ā
Imagine Chat, for example, imagine that you wereā€¦ playing Minecraft, with likeā€“ you were given a friend to play Minecraft with, Chat, like your best friend, and [unintelligible] were like, ā€œHey, you get to play Minecraft with this person, right? BUT if this person dies ā€“ theyā€™re currently your best friend, Chip ā€“ but if they die in the game, you never get to talk to them again. Ever again.ā€ Can you imagine what thatā€™s like, Chip?
I donā€™t think a lot of people understand like, what that does, right? Iā€™m not gonna say that like, it creates this situation, Chip, that like, messes with your head, but itā€“ Chip ā€“ but it totally, totally does, Chip. It messes with your head! It literally puts you in a position where youā€™re second-guessing and thinking about everything, Chip! Youā€™re thinking about EVERYTHING Chip! Ok? And thatā€™s the problem, Chipā€“ is you turn into a paranoid monster because of it, Chip! Like, you donā€™t understand Chipā€“ I was- I was so afraid of every dirt block, I used to carry a shovel with me Chip, and I would specifically right-click dirt blocks that looked suspicious because mines, Chipā€“ mines could not be shoveled! Like, I was crazy, Chip! But hereā€™s the problem, Chip: that craziness is still there. Iā€™m genuinely likeā€“
I remember thinking Chip, that I would one dayā€“ I was like, ā€œIā€™m going to move pastā€“ā€ here, letā€™s go up here, Chip. I remember thinking one day Chip, I was like, ā€œIā€™m gonna move past the underground base, one of these days. You know, one of these days, I feel like Iā€™ll be able to grow and achieve the desire to build a base that doesnā€™t have to be underground.ā€ But I donā€™t think itā€™s possible now Chip, because I thinkā€¦ I just donā€™t know. I feel like the paranoiaā€“ thereā€™s still like, residual leftover trauma from that situation, Chip.
But hereā€™s the problem Chip: I donā€™t think I donā€™t thinkā€“ I donā€™t think people understand it. Like, I just really donā€™t. But I also donā€™t blame them Chip, ā€˜cuz I donā€™t think itā€™s possible to fully understand it if you havenā€™t lived through it. Like, if you did not live through the QSMPā€¦ Iā€™m talking about the QSMP, I donā€™t- I donā€™t know if that was obviousā€“ if you did not live through that, it almost sounds like, crazy. But I donā€™t think people realize how much of a joyous experience like, the Eggs were. Right? I donā€™t think people realize it. Like, they were SO awesome! They were literally so awesome to just hang out with and spend time with, Chip. So, itā€™s just one of those things thatā€“
[Heā€™s interrupted by a loud rumble of thunder above them]
Did lightning just strike here? Is it thunderstorming outā€¦? But anyway, Chip. Thatā€™s the food for thought.
But thatā€™s the problemā€“ Like, every time it rains in Minecraft, I have to like, look at the sky, and I get this weird, like, second--hand vibe because of the trauma. The trauma, Chip! The trauma is real! But thatā€™s the pointā€“ Iā€™m not saying I regret it. I, to this day Chip, I loved the experience. Iā€™d do it all over again in a heartbeat. Even knowing how everything went, I would still do it all over again.Ā
[He falls down] Dangit, donā€™t come over here Chip, ā€˜cuz Iā€™m coming back up! Ok.
I would still do it all over again, because ā€” even knowing like, all the trauma and sufferingĀ  and stuff like that ā€” because it was justā€¦ It was just that fun, Chip, it was just that fun. I really wiā€“ I donā€™t think itā€™s ever gonna be possible, Chip, to give people that same energy, like that same experience. You know what I mean, Chip? I donā€™t think itā€™s ever gonna be possible again. Like, EVER.
Becauseā€¦ because like, one: I will say on one level Chip, I will say on one level, likeā€“ itā€™s sort of emotionally likeā€¦ Itā€™s emotionally devastating, and I think to actually go through thatā€“ and this is where like, if I ever do end up going to aā€“ see a therapist, if I ever do end up going to see a therapist at any point, Iā€™ll talk it over with them and be like, ā€œHey, what do you think about this?ā€ Because I genuinely think on one level, likeā€“ itā€™s created this fear of forming attachments because of like, how things can go. You know what I mean? Like, the fear of getting attached to something and then potentially losing it. Like, itā€™s- itā€™s a genuine thing. I think people forget about that.
Like, at the end of the day, everything was RP, right? On the server. You know what I mean? Like, everything was RP, Chip. BUT at the same point, even though it was RP Chip, it was still likeā€“ there the reality of you were still playing like, with another person, and you were still getting that experience, and it felt like you were genuinely attached to someone and you didnā€™t want anything bad to happen to them. It was GENUINELY stressful, Chip.
But at the same point, I donā€™t regret it, and I donā€™t think it was a bad experience. Iā€™mā€“Ā
Sometimes in life Chip, you go through stuff, and maybe you have a certain amount of like, things that like, can happen, that youā€™re like, ā€œYou know what, maybe this wasnā€™t a good thing that this happened,ā€ but at the same point, you still arenā€™t necessarily upset about it, becauseā€¦ itā€™s like growing as a person, right? Hereā€™s the thing Chip; even bad situations, Chip, can lead to an overall good outcome. Likeā€“
Even if youā€™re going through something bad Chip, just because a bad thing happens doesnā€™t mean that only bad things have to come from that. Thatā€™s one of the things I tell people all the time, Chip, is that if you go through a bad situation, you can learn from it, and you can use your experience to help others. And you can be thatā€“ you can be, at the worst-case scenario, you can be someone for other people who are going through that same experience to lean on when they go through that.I think thereā€™s a certain amount of comfort that comes from that; from knowing no matter how bad your situation is, youā€™re not the only person whoā€™s experienced it. You know what I mean?
#Badboyhalo#BBH#Bad#QSMP#January 8 2025#Edited#I know folks are going to add their two cents on this subject in the tags / comments / replies (and as always you're welcome to do that)#But for the sake of my sanity please don't be an asshole to any of the CCs / ex-admins / fellow fans / anyone else. Thanks#Most folks here don't need a ''Don't be a dumbass'' reminder but I had to block someone for that earlier and it was a bit disappointing#This is going to be a Tumblr exclusive clip because I don't trust Twitter to have common sense or common decency about this topic#Tumblr exclusive#Anyways business aside ā€“ that black line on the side is just part of Bad's stream btw. He just Has That#Took too long for this to render otherwise I'd edit it out because it's annoying#I'm just realizing this screenshot doesn't even have Dapper OTL but it's the best one I have so I gotta work with what I got#Honestly; I still miss QSMP dearly... I love the core intent of the project and the multicultural exchange#I love all the language barriers that were broken and I loved all the stories that were told and watching beautiful friendships bloom#But I am still so angry and disappointed about how things ended and all the poor communication and the admin situation as a whole#It's a complicated feeling#I agree with pretty much everything Bad says here#It's ironic that he uses that analogy because I've said almost the exact same thing when explaining why losing any Egg was so devastating#We weren't just mourning for the characters. We were mourning for the admins too#I'll never forget that last stream with Tazercraft and Richas; and Pac ending stream in tears#I wish they'd done away with the Egg life system. I wish they'd done a lot of things differently#If the project ever does come back in some shape or form I hope they are more transparent about things and have better communication#I dunno how I'd feel personally. They would have to do a lot of work regaining people's trust#And frankly I don't think they'll ever regain that trust from a large portion of the community#I remember near the start of QSMP I saw a comment from a fan that simply said ''QSMP; please don't leave me feeling bitter''#I think about that comment a lot

My two cents on how much of Mind!Varric is Rookā€™s mind trying to fill the blank space and how much is Solas actively talking through a convenient blood magic paper doll of the mind: I think it's a mix of both, a truly collaborative psychosocial horrorshow if you would, but waaaay more towards the second. It feels too directed and tactical at times to be anything else. Rook's mind is willing to go along with the denial phase as far as it can fucking carry them to not have to face the grief and regret and does its part in papering over details that donā€™t make any sense, the way brains will strive to create coherent meaning even out of deeply confusing input, but to my understanding it's a collaborateur in how that plays out, not the instigator or control center. Solas is using it as a path to agency and to gather insight into Rook as a person unguarded as he can't count on in his own guise. (That stoic option that leads to him being like 'oh I see you're cautiously denying me access to your inner life. well. at least you still have Varric to talk to. y'know as an outlet :)'. You absolute BITCH Solas! That alone convinced me that he HAS to have an active hand in it on some level.)
My guess is that it takes considerable effort on Solasā€™ part to make Mind!Varric do anything more involved or complicated than seeming to sit up in bed and give casual commentary, and thatā€™s why he keeps having eerie five minute shallow pep talks with you before he announces he conveniently needs a nap aaanyway good luck kid you got this haha. When heā€™s just spouting NPC lines from his bedrest, Iā€™m ready to believe that could be Rookā€™s mind being allowed to improv lines for him more freely because itā€™s less about Solas trying to get something out of them or working an angle and more ā€˜Still here! Still totally alive and fine and the mentor figure you know and love and trust :) donā€™t even worry about it! Thankfully there is no war in Ba Sing Sei, as we all knowā€™ upkeep work lol. Rookā€™s mind is allowed to set the tone of Varric, the outlines, but not always the content.Ā
AND, on a (beautifully fucked up) character psychology level, I feel like Solas is indulging in actually getting to be the good supportive mentor figure to Rook with one hand to assuage the guilt he feels about what he's done -- and what he's going to do -- to them with the other. Same internal logic as he uses in Trespasser about the Qun. ā€˜Almost everyone is going to die from the course of action Iā€™m doggedly pursuing eventually. But at least I can make their last years happier and freer and kinder than they would have been otherwise. and that kind of makes up for it right. a little bit. doesn't it. doesn't that make it better at least. I need that to make it better)'. Did I really take your beloved mentor and friend from you if you donā€™t know yet that I did? Some philosophers would argue not really! So itā€™s probably almost ok actually. Isnā€™t it even a little noble that Iā€™m taking all this grief and guilt on myself and shielding you for now. With undertones that Iā€™m not sure he would realize himself (and might be mortified by if he did) that he is so incredibly lonely, and even a dishonest and indirect emotional connection is more than nothing when youā€™re that desperate. In this setup he gets idk. Both the control he craves so incredibly badly in relationships and over himself, and the scraps, the fading afterimages, of intimacy and warmth and companionship, even second hand. The one thing Solas and Rook agree on deep deep down is that they really wish Varric weren't gone. They're handshake memeing this in the saddest and most creepy way possible.
I think an important element too is that Solas needs Rook and their team to *succeed* ā€”Ā  up to a certain point. He needs someone to hold the two other elven mean girls off until he can get out of here. Ideally, in a perfect world, even do all the hard work of killing them so he can swoop in at the end and do his thing when both sides are exhausted and out of resources to stop him, and then Bobā€™s your uncle! Same logic as he was using with Corypheus, and after that worked out so well, too! King of choosing to never learn from a single solitary mistake heā€™s ever made even though i fully believe he could have the capacity to Fenā€™Harel <3 The underlying idea isnā€™t flawed, you see, it was just unforeseen circumstances getting in the way. This time for sure itā€™ll all work out the way I cleverly imagined it in my head beforehand. Cue By Talos this canā€™t be happening etc. in the form of a statue almost crushing him like a bug.Ā
So he's providing guidance and forging Rook into a leader from two angles: one Rook might not trust, and one they probably will. Shaping them into what he needs slowly and carefully. Heā€™s helping you hone your team into their most effective state, as he might have done with his own agents back in the day, setting up his chess pieces even if he has to squint through two glimpsed realities to do it haha. Pincer maneuver of an insidious stealth mentor you never asked for. Alsoā€¦ at one point mind Varric gives you a whole little monologue about how Solas' problem is that heā€™s always seen his interpersonal connections as flaws and see where itā€™s landed him, all alone and the worst part? it hasnā€™t even worked. itā€™s all been for nothing heā€™s back where he began with nothing to show for it but his mistakes. Like...that has such strong 'uh okay happy to play your therapist from two rooms away here what the fuck kind of traumadump is this' energy to me, Iā€™m not sure Rook like. Thinks that much about Solas as a private person. So much of Solas' self-loathing and futile insights into his own flaws seem to shine through in Mind!Varric's dialogue all the time ā€” I just can't believe that there's no guiding hand behind it as it were.Ā
Most of all. I feel like people underestimate the degree to which Solas is incredibly funny. As in, he has a very consistent and recognizable sense of humour. Itā€™s one of my very favourite things about him. We must remember ā€” it is crucial that we always keep in mind ā€” Orlesian accent and wig Solas from May The Dread Wolf Take You (my beloved, the explanation for why I love this dude even with the. All of the everything else. No one does it quite like him). He is not at all above doing things or adding little flourishes for his own obscure amusement, in fact that seems to me to be one of his most consistent traits. The Randy Dowager Quarterly comment Varric has? The ā€˜Maybe this is the Dread Wolfā€™s revenge. Forcing us to house sit for himā€™ thing? To Me this is 100% Solas amusing himself in his boring Fade jail surrounded by the screaming hellscape of all his regrets. Source: it came to me as divine revelation through pure vibes trust me broĀ
If nothing else I find it much more narratively interesting personally if the connection between Rook and Solas really is that defenselessly intimate and entwined (and so unbalanced!), and the sense of violation and invasion and betrayal afterwards consequently all the more nauseatingly intense. Even if you kept him at armā€™s length in the open, heā€™s been under your skin the whole time, looking around, gathering what he needs to destroy you, wearing the face of a friend. Regretfully, probably, but choosing to do it every step of the way anyway. (Sound familiar, Inquisitor? Solas doesnā€™t have that many tricks when you actually look at it, he keeps returning to old tried and true ones like a dog with a bone haha.) Maybe he even genuinely meant some of it as mercy, which only makes it so much worse. It makes his sin against his own core principles of autonomy and the freedom of all beings in mind, spirit and body so much more juicily grave if itā€™s something he pursues actively and consistently, rather than it half-falling into his lap as a happy accident mainly orchestrated by Rookā€™s own subconscious. Solas, too, is at his very lowest point, the closest to giving in and becoming his own antithesis fully that heā€™s ever been, and it makes the choice of whether you still reach out your hand to him one last time or not all the more impactful and difficult.

I actually love Anthony Bridgertonā€™s ā€œI will humble myself before youā€ speech because itā€™s not only the perfect culmination of Anthonyā€™s character arc throughout season 2 but also of Kateā€™s.
Throughout the season, we see Kate as someone who believes that she has to earn the love in her relationships. She believes that if scrapes and begs and borrows to keep her family afloat, then she can earn her place with Mary and Edwina. If she pleads with the Sheffields even at the cost of her own pride to make sure Mary and Edwina are taken care of, then she can continue to earn her familyā€™s love. Kate is so used to sacrificing everything she has and then going even beyond that, to earn her place in her personal relationships.
And then here comes Anthony with his ā€œYou do not have to accept it or embrace it or even allow itā€.
His love is freely given, without even the expectation of acknowledgment, right from the moment he confesses it to Kate. So right from the very beginning, Kate knows, and not just in an abstract sense but from his actual words, that she does not need to earn his love, itā€™s hers because of who she is, not because of what she can do for him.
This man that she did not concede an inch to, where sheā€™s used to hacking away at herself in an attempt to earn love, simply loves her. He loves her even if she has nothing to give, not even an acknowledgment of his confession.
Then when he proposes all he asks of her is her presence in his life. Thatā€™s all he expects from her.
ā€œI will humble myself before youā€ was the lesson Anthonyā€™s proud ass needed to learn, but it was also the lesson Kate needed. That sheā€™s worthy of receiving and not just to give and keep giving and give some more.
And I absolutely love that this is the beginning of her marriage. A relationship that starts with her knowing in the most absolute sense that she does not have to earn her place in it.
