We all know how I feel about romance. However, one near almost always exception to this rule is in westerns.
Specifcally, when the romance is between a gunfighter/outlaw and the woman. Because 99.9% of the time, the story is "I have taken in this sad wet cat of a man who is capable of great murder and because he's Decent Guy Who Must Repay His Debts but lacks any form of useful skill beyond murder, he promptly offers to kill the resident pain in my ass". and the moral quandrary she must answer is "am I still committing murder if I let him do it FOR me as an act of LOVE"?
And the answer is almost always "God is a little fuzzy on the deets, but this guy has pissed off a lot of people and no one is going to press charges"
#look westerns are my jam#Maybe because there's no technology and the law is ambiguous#sometimes I just have a bad day and want to have someone offer to murder someone who is causing me grief#should he happen to be a handsome stranger I fished out of a ditch well then#this is the plot line to a lot of westerns

The Wagons West series of books by Dana Fuller Ross [pseud] contained 24 volumes, and I recall my father having 3-4 of them in the late 1970s-early 1980s. Here are ten of the titles at a thriftstore.

I wish people would stop talking about "World War III" as if it's guaranteed to happen. Like it's just the natural upcoming progression of the human race. You should not want it to happen. The US and the Israel colony project keep kicking at other countries in a blatant attempt to start a wider regional war, and we cannot keep acting like this is something either of them should just be doing
We as a population need to keep asking for this to stop, for Western nations to stop bringing violence to other countries for reasons that don't make any sense to the public. "But they could attack us any minute?" But didn't we attack them first? The only way this is going to get better before it gets worse is if we are all vocal about criticizing Western leaders for enabling the colony. Everybody should care about the Middle East right now: World War III has been treated as an inevitability, even a meme, for far too long, and it's going to be used as a justification of escalating regional violence. The only way that'll stop is if we, all together, point out the US's meddling and destruction in other countries and go, "Hey man, this fucking sucks; stop that"
#protect palestine#and Lebanon and Yemen and Syria#you can also point out how much money is spent on murdering Arab civilians instead of giving US citizens healthcare or public transport#like hey man. all our train tracks look like they're from a 1920s cartoon but you gave all this killing technology to a Western settlement

Block him - block him in the spiritual sense, maybe eventually no contact, but for now no deep convos, no what should've been/could've been, hang out only when you want, no sex, only casual like he never meant anything
Study Hard - Study schedule has to be made and stuck to with consequences and rewards.
Perseverance - you can do this just keep going. Keep trying, use this platform to get out the feelings and post the progress and everything!

2024 reads / storygraph
And The Sky Bled
standalone character driven fantasy set in a colonised island city below an eternal storm and rift that rains a magical blood-like fuel resource
after 6 months of drought, the reserves are low, and the world is on the brink of climate and societal collapse
three rivals - a thief, slumlord, and heiress with secrets and a connected past all search to find a fabled cache of magic that could save or destroy them
arc from netgalley, out oct 15
#and the sky bled#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#a unique standalone fantasy exploring climate disaster colonialism and power. I’m not sure how I feel about it though.#I found it a bit hard to grasp the broad politics/worldbuilding and connection between the characters.#There’s a lot in the details of the individual characters and what their lives are like living under oppression#but I couldn’t get a sense of like -what elements were inherent to the world and what were recent changes bc of the climate catastrophe?#Maybe that’s beside the point - I just wasn’t sure of the overall context.#Quite possibly that's partially an issue of my western viewpoint to a South Asian inspired fantasy; also#However I do appreciate that it’s a complete standalone story!#Unfortunately I never felt super sucked into the book or connected to the characters. also felt like the romance came out of nowhere.#Logically I know that the planes thing is about how decades of climate catastrophe would mean that kind of technology becomes#incomprehensible but also it felt anachronistic to me; compared to the rest of the worldbuilding? like what about any other forms of tech?#some of this might be a me problem not the book tho!

Wacky Workbench Good Future (JP)'s theme is the concept of adorableness distilled in audio form. I listen to it and I'm just like
p e r f e c t t e c h n o (dial-tone and xylophone noises)
#I love how they used real-world machines in the song compositions like telephones and dot matrix printers#in addition to being quintessentially 90s it gives the impression that technology can be as wondrous as nature#and is not inherently evil#technology when used responsibly can be a great boon to our world#it's a much more nuanced message than the strict environmentalism of western media at the time#sonic cd

sometimes i think about how the power of the fears fluctuate through the centuries as human culture leans towards one or another
it seems to me that in jonah’s time the eye was a more minor power, relegated to stalkers in the night and misguided academics
but in modern times? there's cameras *everywhere, the western world is nearly entirely a surveillance state. at any moment you can be exposed to anyone with an internet connection
technology has surely skyrocketed the Eye’s level of influence
#thinking abt how i was reading a fic the other day where elias said the eye didnt agree with technology#and i was like!!!!!! NO!! you obviously dont understand the fear#cameras are the eyes greatest strength#i mean this is in the text as well#with the security guard statement and also the drones in the eyepocalypse#croaks#the magnus archives#tma#jonah when he got his eyepower#sure he could look thru any humans eyes#but now he has birds eye view in any city in the western world#hes sooo much more powerful now#jonah probably loves technology#which is why i headcanon him as being fairly tech savvy#and yes statements didnt record on modern technology but the tape recorders were web so

Western capitalism is an absurd ideology. It isn’t cohesive. You can counter every pro-capitalist argument with another pro-capitalist argument. It eats itself. All of this technology would’ve been made either way.
Ouroboros.

the human cosmos was such a good book in terms of like, talking about how people have studied astronomy across human history, the interdisciplinary nature of both ancient astronomy as well as the study of ancient astronomy, and how it has all culminated into the modern state of the field. but then the final chapter starts talking about how like, The Mind is a fucking fundamental piece of the fabric of the universe akin to matter, or fucking something along those lines, and it's like girl what in the god damn are you talking about
#as much as this book pissed me off . it does live rent free in my head#her points about the disconnect that advancing technology causes between scientists and their actual subject of study#is SUCH a compelling thought and its something thats underlying my whole drive lately to like#actually observe the night sky and rediscover the old observational techniques but for myself and my own intuition#and her discussion of non western astronomy especially was so compelling entirely because i just. like. NEVER see non western#astronomy discussed and like i've tried to do research into it before but whenever i try to look at like. oh. japanese astro or something#i just get the same basic ass shit that offers literally no new information and/or seems to be oversimplifying to the point of inaccuracy#and/or even fucking orientalism#so to read an actual in depth discussion about polynesian astronomy and how their approach was so fundamentally#different from western european astronomy is just so. FASCINATING#its not only about the cultural sociological differences since yknow. literally across the world from each other#but also the geographical physical differences. since theyre halfway across the world from each other!#like all of northern hemisphere astronomy is based around polaris because we have an actual pole star#but the southern hemisphere does not have a pole star and so any southern astronomy cannot use the same techniques that#northern astronomy does since they have no pole star to center their measurements off of#and so that leads to just an entirely new way of observing the night sky based on the horizon instead of the pole#and its jsut like. THATS FASCINATING. ITS CRAZY !!!! i just never even thought of that before but it seems so obvious once pointed out#CANNOT stop thinking about it#AND THEN SHE STARTS TALKING ABOUT THIS WACK MIND POWER PSEUDOSCIENCE SHIT? LIKE GIRL?????????????#brot posts#astro posting#anyway i do really need to do more reading about nonwestern observational techniques#if i ever see literally any discussion of nonwestern astronomy its always just the mythology#and even then its only like 2 sentences#like yknow ofc i learned about polynesian wayfaring and sailing techniques but i never learned the actual /how/ of it all#like /how/ did they navigate the ocean open via the stars. i know they did it but finally learning /how/ is like holy shitttt
