When you remake something and make changes, you’re basically saying that you either want to say something different than what the original said because what it had to say was stupid—
—or what the original said wasn’t already said perfectly, and you could say it better.
Tumblr media
I’ll give you an example. Donald Glover, who voiced Simba in the remake of the Lion King, openly said that the message of the new Lion King was different than the old one. And that’s easy to see. The old message was something like “Remember who you are: Don’t run from your responsibility.” The new message is “Don’t be ashamed of who you are.” They communicated that change with subtle smaller changes, because although most of that movie was a less appealing shot-for-shot remake, Simba said little things like “I’m not like you,” instead of saying, “I’m not who I used to be,” to Mufasa’s ghost. Or he replied to Scar’s bullying, “I’m nothing,” rather than the emphasis being placed on him insisting that he’s “not a murderer.”
That’s saying, “yeah the old message was great but we’re going to take the award-winning songs and characters and story and make it say something else.”
Which is like trying to use a recipe for brownies to describe your chicken salad. You might as well just make an original movie, so the characters and pacing and music all fit that message more appealingly.
Here’s a different example.
The new Live Action Little Mermaid has lots of thematic references to understanding and finding one’s own voice, which, on the surface, sound like they’re exactly what the original animated classic was saying.
But they make little changes, like having Ariel make the decision to go to the surface for the first time just before she meets Eric, or big changes, like having her be the one to kill Ursula. The problem is, both of those story elements in the first film were used to drive the main message home: “True love is understanding and sacrifice.” So when you change those elements, but claim you’re still saying the same thing, all you mean is “What you said was good, but watch me say it better.”
That would be fine, if it actually worked. But it doesn’t. The Lion King (2019) is worse than the original because it’s characters are bland and lean more toward annoying or weak than they did in the original, thanks to small changes. Now Simba doesn’t look like the irresponsible runaway who needs to remember that he’s the son of a king and has responsibility. Now he just looks like a sad boi with trauma. Now Ariel doesn’t look like a real, relatable teenager who recklessly goes for the things she’s passionate about. Now she just looks like every other near-perfect heroine who’s circumstances determine her struggles instead of her own character flaws determining her struggles.
I’m tired, but I’m appreciating the originals.

im figuratively crying on the floor atm because my comfort west side story fic got deleted from ao3 :'''''''( so this is a reach in the dark for the tiny possibility that someone was smart and downloaded it
description below the cut <3
so its relatively short, between like 4k and 15k most likely, and tony x riff (though theres a lot else going on too, personal emotional baggage themes). its set during the time of the film (im picturing the 2021 film), where tony has gone to prison (pre-narrative in the film). im not sure if that part is shown, but properly starts when tony is days away from coming home again. riff is lowkey freaking out and having a crisis, and so he leaves his home, missing tony's return.
the scene I remember quite vividly is when riff comes back. its raining, I think he bumps into bernardo who is more concerned than aggressive. then he runs into tony who has been out looking for him for days. tony is super mad and shoves riff into the wall of a side road, and he's acting furious, but the whole time riff just can't believe his eyes and is trying to get him to calm down so he can just see his face again </3
they go inside they are soft and theres a smut scene but its less smut and more feelings. during this, tony sees the scars on riffs torso and gets distracted, but riff just wants to brush it off lalalala probably the fluffiest scene of the fic, much comfort
hmmmm and then the rest of the fic I don't remember so well, theres just a lot of heavy emotional angst and im not sure it ends happy. it might actually continue with the film's plot and so end in that angsty way, but im not totally sure
<3
its definitely been deleted off ao3 since I saw my deleted bookmark, rip me, but if this rings a bell for anyone and they somehow have a copy of it pls!!! pls!!! pls!!!!!!!! ill give you the biggest virtual hug if you send it to me <33333333

Unrealistic Expectations (2023)
What is it about fictional men Who draw all attention Ensnare the heart with their words Animated by their passions A simple con man from St. Petersburg The fairy prince, who swears to be         your wings Far longer than forever, Promises to see your heart Like the Scottish highlander Who’s faith defies the barriers of time The spaces filled with simple detectives Or wannabe authors still discovering         who they are The men who’ll lift you up Swear to rewrite the stars When you are too blinded By the follies of life’s staging To see yourself as you truly are Rarer in reality Than the heart of the ocean Yet, somehow, someway, Find a new way of living Rent-free in my head

Note
Adverts, much like forms, are so rarely reflective of one's developed roleplaying prowess. I call on all faculties now to conjure up a promotion proper enough to hook the attention of any like-minded partners out there. So, without further ado, I will get into a brief introduction about myself.
I'm a roleplayer in her early twenties who has been writing for an embarrassingly long time. Roleplaying has been a hobby of mine since the dawn of Roblox, but since then I've moved onto much more "sophisticated" platforms than that. I'm a pretty chill writer who can adapt to my partner's needs, but as a general basis I'd like to say I can fluctuate between literate to advanced (we all know how it goes- it really depends on the plot and the style). Recently, I've been seriously itching for a good heterosexual roleplay. I can play either a male or female role because again, it really depends on my partner's comfort level.
Figuring out a plot that I'm dying for in the moment is like pulling teeth, so we will see if what I say next makes any sense. I love oc x oc pairings, so that's a must. I'm pleading, no, groveling for a sophisticated darker themed romance. Some mild fantasy may be involved, but I want hearts to be broken while action runs rampant. NSFW is welcome, but not required. I just think it's fun to incorporate when our dynamic duo is no longer cock-blocked by sore feelings or stupid people. I'd love to talk more with anyone interested about a concrete idea, but in the meantime I'd like to generate a couple ideas by listing some fandoms I'm into (we don't have to do a fandom roleplay, this is just for fun)
LOTR, GOT, ACOTAR, Shadow and Bone, The Selection, Percy Jackson, The Mortal Instruments, Twilight, West Side Story, and Skyrim for all you gamers
Interact with this post and I will message you when I can.

Vacation Laura and I have finally started Bad Buddy together! We just watched episode 4, it's making me a smidge euphoric, I have to externalize a bit of the giddiness so I can go to sleep.
I have watched and read so many enemies or rivals to lovers stories, and the draw for me has always been as an audience member, enjoying the tension and conflict that resolves into confused mutual pining. This is the first time I've watched rivals annoy the shit out of each other and thought to myself "I want what they have." Truly!! Like I've never felt two rivals/enemies enjoy each other so viscerally that I want to feel that myself, but Pat/Pran did that. Gotta get me a girl who pesters me and shoves my head into her stinky armpit and doesn't want to play sportsball unless I'm on the opposing team.
Speaking of stinky armpits: Love how much these men smell each other. Very enjoying the sheer amount of sniffing and scenting.
Ep4 makeup removal scene is new product placement scene of all time, for ME. Certainly there have been more hilariously memorable ones (Farmhouse), but Bad Buddy had their leads use a cosmetic product in a normal and everyday way, instead of bringing women in for just that scene, or making it a joke scene between two men. For this I love them.
I usually hate being spoiled for ships and romance storylines but I loveeeee knowing InkPa happens because it makes the Ink scenes, already delightful for Pran's heartsick eyes alone, exponentially more tantalizing. Pa is staying out of the way for her brother's sake? Oh girl you just wait.
As mentioned: I love Pran's heartsick eyes, love when tears gather just in the corners of them in bedroom scene at the end of ep 4. Nanon's so good at looking wounded, makes it an artform. I ALSO love: Pat's stupid giggle; Pat making people give into him with whiny coy puppy-dog begging.
I would like to see Pat in a dress.
That's all for now haha
