Thank you very much to Jory (@werewolfetone) for this beautiful double portrait of Mary Ann and Henry Joy McCracken, 18th/19th century Belfast's most dynamically revolutionary sibling duo! He is currently doing art commissions to support the people of Palestine--find his page with the information here.
Definitely check out his blog for some of the most thoughtful, entertaining, well-researched, and righteously indignant history/cultural commentary you're likely to see--as well as fascinating original art and characters.
And please support those still in desperate need in Gaza. Click here for a list of further places you can help with donations. If you can't give money, keep speaking out so that they are not forgotten.

Oh okay so if we're talking about hypothetically splitting the uk into as many countries as possible--off the top of my head Scotland would go, Wales would go, Northern England, Cornwall, the Isle of Man, NI rejoins Ireland proper. OR if you wanted to make another country out of it at the cost of restarting a bloody war Ulster becomes its own country, and then for what's left of England we revert to the mediaeval boundaries creating at least four more countries including Mercia, East Anglia, Wessex, and Kent, possibly London becomes a city state, and possibly Lancashire breaks off from an independent Northern England to be its own country too. Everything after the first sentence would cause almost nothing but problems and piss almost everyone off but whatever
Sounds good 😇

Hey have you read either of these whaling journals? And if so, what did you think of them? Someone I know got em for me at one of the bookshops on Nantucket recently & I’ve not started reading them yet so I don’t have any thoughts on the content, but they seemed like something you might be interested in so I thought I’d ask if you’d read them
Ooh I haven’t! The first is a bit early for me, but I trust anything touched by the Philbricks. Def eyeing that second one cos not only is it right in my window of historical interest, but written by a greenhand no less, who tend to be my favorite journal keepers. I’ll have to track that one down for myself!
Even though I haven’t read them I imagine they’re probably very interesting compared to the average whaling log, if someone went through the effort of transcribing them and publishing them.

Nope, still don't like Orange.
everyone hates orange until they actually see her in context. "oh it's such an ugly color, too bright!" look at sunsets and autumn, look at campfires and deserts. she's the most beautiful and special part of the scene. now apologize.

I'm soooo glad you said that about The Secret History and fascism because I've thought about that a fair bit too! Imo since tsh is about the tipping point from "I like ancient Greece" -> "let's commit multiple murders" I feel like if you maybe like. considered the murder an allegory for becoming a fascist you'd have a really good demonstration of the declining narrative enjoyer -> fascist pipeline. It's so interesting and it adds a lot to the experience of reading the book I think
I mean, I'm not here saying that TSH is about the characters becoming fascist, but the parallel is to some extent unavoidable because of a) the decline narrative element and b) the shift into extremism that happens when people value their intellectual ideas more than the lives of other people (this isn't exclusive to fascism of course, it just happens to be fascism this time because the specific ideas in TSH align with the intellectual side of fascist ideology)
(also sorry for taking ages to answer this, I know the post you're talking about happened a while back so that this won't make much sense to anyone who doesn't read my blog like the morning newspaper)

Looks like horses do that, too. So, I knew a horse who wouldn't pick up his feet, despite me knowing (from a few rare occasions) that he actually had lovely gaits. The thing was, he just never really did, because why have exercise and put effort into your walk when you could be in your king-size pasture, munching on grass?
In the process of him just 'slouching' along, he'd get his feet caught on stones, roots etc. and would stumble.
Seeing as that's dangerous and, on a somewhat less important note, not exactly pleasant for the person on his back, I started singing simple melodies in order to give him a rhythm, hoping that he'd adjust his walk to the song, start to walk decently according to the rhythm, and stumble less. What started as a silly little idea after having read an article about a study where researchers played music of different genres to horses started to yield surprising results.
Experimenting a little, I realised that firstly, it worked, and secondly, his favourite song seemed to be Over the Hills and Far Away. We got to the point where he would slouch fully on purpose in order to make me sing that song.
So yeah. Seems like he was pretending to be Marengo or Copenhagen bravely accompanying Napoleon or Wellington respectively into battle while carrying me through some calm, idyllic woods and fields...
romanticizing your life is such a powerful tool and it’s a shame that it’s mostly used by people on tiktok to justify the purchase of expensive breakfast smoothies when there are few better ways to force oneself through unpleasant shit than imagining a cinematic backstory for your extremely quotidian suffering

Just saw a post and I am NOT qualified to make an addition, but it has to be said, an integral part of Crozier's Irishness SURELY must also be that he's a Dissenter? Not sure that term was used a lot anymore by the middle of the century, but he's not catholic. He's Presbyterian! "The Church of England gives you hives" - Because he is a Protestant, but not an Anglican! After 1798 and 1801 and iirc, also the Catholic Emancipation, Presbyterians and other non-Anglicans were folded into the Ascendancy, but throughout the 18th century, they were also the target of oppression and known for their protests.
(Also, I'm not sure Hickey, as in E.C. is Irish at all, I've seen people argue against it and thought that makes sense with his accent switch at the end as well.)
((Rest of the post is interesting and good though :))

Don't worry, you just haven't gotten the hang of handling your air friar (have you not studied the instruction manual prior to activating him?)! This model is called Saint Joseph of Cupertino, and is an absolute premium household investment!
Here's how it works: If you pray to him nicely enough, he will make you ace your exams!
In order to take proper care of your Saint Joseph of Cupertino, you should provide him with some enrichment. Many owners of Saint Joseph of Cupertinos and similar models go the generic route of playing Gregorian chants or the Name of the Rose audiobooks to their air friar in order to give their living space a monastic feel, but we recommend something more personal. As the goldfinch is the animal associated with Saint Joseph of Cupertino, perhaps a nature documentary will keep him occupied and will prevent excessive flying around and unwanted preaching!
With a little enrichment and proper care, you will soon be able to enjoy all the benefits of your air friar!
Saint Joseph of Cupertino- for intellectual high flyers, and everyone who wants to be one!
my stupid fucking aunt loraine bought us an air friar for our wedding present 🤦‍♀️ the apartments barely big enough for the two of us now weve got this dumb asshole flying around preaching at us ... every time i get a migraine he tries to give me herbs and poultices 🙄

Hello!
Let me introduce you to my friend @ameinababa2024 .
She is the wonderful mother of four children: Jude (12 years old), Habiba (10 years old),  Omar (six years old) and Maryam, who is only 1 year old. She lived most of her life during this terrible genocide.
Amina studied graphic design. Three months before the war, she finished her studies and started working. Her husband was also working as a driver.
And then the war came. They found themselves jobless. They were displaced, forced to live in a tent which has been floodeed by the first rain of the season. Winter is coming, and Amina's family urgently needs your help.
Her daughter Jude also needs treatement for her glandular problems, which she can't receive under these circumstances. And let's not forget that Maryam is a baby who needs milk and diapers.
Please, help her. Her fundraiser has been vetted here.
Donate whatever you can, and if you can't, please share.

Adding some of my own favourite people have always been people stories:
A medieval university professor ranting about how his students are lazy party-people who only carry a book around to look smart, and always arrive late and unprepared. (I wish I could tell off the top of my head when and where this was from; I think it was from a 15th century central European source, I might have it in my old notes somewhere)
The Dominican friar Felix Fabri (1438/1439–1502) completed two pilgrimages, on which he kept a journal, which was later published. He surprised his European travelling companions when, renting donkeys from a local businessman for, if I recall correctly, a guided tour to Mount Sinai, the donkey driver-guide recognised him from his first pilgrimage a few years prior. He kissed Felix on the cheek, tried to make conversation with him (Felix had a limited knowledge of Arabic) and showed him preferment throughout the tour by continously giving him a fresh donkey to ride, sharing his water with him and trusting Felix with his whip. Felix, moved by the trust and affection shown to him, recorded the encounter for posterity. The name of the donkey driver was Cassa, an enslaved person. We still know Cassa's name, and can read about his incredible kindness to a near-stranger today.
Mary Henrietta Stuart, Princess of Orange (1631–1660), upon realising that her infant son, the future William III, was not a healthy child whose physical development seemed to be delayed, nicknamed him her "Piccinino" after the 15th century Italian mercenary captain who rose to military fame despite having been of low stature and impeded by a limp and generally poor health.
Justine Siegmund (1636–1705) became an accomplished midwife and gynecological practitioner who published a manual on midwifery in 1690. She chose her profession after having had a possibly traumatic experience having been wrongfully diagnosed as being pregnant by a midwife at 20 or 21, wanting to improve future conditions during pregnancy and childbirth for other women. In a dispute over Siegmund's practices with her former supervisor, a doctor and professor at the university of Frankfurt an der Oder, his colleagues sided with her.
Lionel Sackville, 1st Duke of Dorset (1688–1765) proving that kids will always be kids when he, aged about 3, did what no adult dared to and interrupted King William III in his study to tell him tea was ready, and the Queen already waiting for him. The encounter ended in William putting down his pen straight away, and lifting Lionel into his toy cart, pulling the little boy, presumably at quite some speed, through the gallery.
Samuel Graves (1713–1787), an admiral in the Royal Navy, very likely helped protect his niece's best friend from an arranged marriage. Mary Anne Burges's (1763–1813) parents were intent to marry her off in her late teens, stating that the family money could not support all their daughters in the event of her father's death. While there was a proposal later in life (which Burges turned down), it appears that she had no sexual or romantic interest in men, and was not particularly secretive about that. Burges went on to spend prolonged "holidays" living with her best friend Elizabeth Posthuma Gwillim's family, her aunt and uncle Graves, where the girls could be, by all accounts, carefree teenagers. Graves, who appears to have shared his wife's beliefs in women's rights, particularly in their choice to marry or remain single to a significant degree, grew to be a paternal figure in her life. Burges, a published author, remained single for life and later designed Graves's memorial in the local church.
Henry Clinton (1730–1795) fell in love with Mary Baddeley (1756-1820), whom he employed as his housekeeper while stationed in Boston in 1775. Knowing she had previously experienced sexual harrassment, he initially kept his feelings to himself out of respect for her needs. The two eventually became a couple following a one-year separation, shipwreck, and the birth of her son John by her rakish husband. Clinton treated John like a child of his own, and even had wanted to be present for the birth, which an order to march south mere weeks before the likely due date however prevented. John named some of his own children after his quasi-step-siblings from Clinton's marriage to his wife Harriot (d. 1772) and in time also became a loving father and husband to a large family.
litany against the GOTification of history.
