Just saw a post and I am NOT qualified to make an addition, but it has to be said, an integral part of Crozier's Irishness SURELY must also be that he's a Dissenter? Not sure that term was used a lot anymore by the middle of the century, but he's not catholic. He's Presbyterian! "The Church of England gives you hives" - Because he is a Protestant, but not an Anglican! After 1798 and 1801 and iirc, also the Catholic Emancipation, Presbyterians and other non-Anglicans were folded into the Ascendancy, but throughout the 18th century, they were also the target of oppression and known for their protests.

(Also, I'm not sure Hickey, as in E.C. is Irish at all, I've seen people argue against it and thought that makes sense with his accent switch at the end as well.)

Hey have you read either of these whaling journals? And if so, what did you think of them? Someone I know got em for me at one of the bookshops on Nantucket recently & I’ve not started reading them yet so I don’t have any thoughts on the content, but they seemed like something you might be interested in so I thought I’d ask if you’d read them

Ooh I haven’t! The first is a bit early for me, but I trust anything touched by the Philbricks. Def eyeing that second one cos not only is it right in my window of historical interest, but written by a greenhand no less, who tend to be my favorite journal keepers. I’ll have to track that one down for myself!

Even though I haven’t read them I imagine they’re probably very interesting compared to the average whaling log, if someone went through the effort of transcribing them and publishing them.

Now that I have your attention, I'd like to direct you towards my friend Ahmed's fundraiser. He and his family, including his wife and three small children, are trapped in Gaza amidst active genocide and an aid blockade causing devastating famine during a bitter winter where scarce survival goods cost exorbitant prices. He needs €1,000 per month to be able to feed his family and purchase supplies, and clothing without using his evacuation funds, which he has already had to do and threatens his family's ability to escape when the border finally opens. We need to raise €117 PER DAY within the next 5 days to be able to provide for the month of November.

Looks like horses do that, too. So, I knew a horse who wouldn't pick up his feet, despite me knowing (from a few rare occasions) that he actually had lovely gaits. The thing was, he just never really did, because why have exercise and put effort into your walk when you could be in your king-size pasture, munching on grass?

In the process of him just 'slouching' along, he'd get his feet caught on stones, roots etc. and would stumble.

Seeing as that's dangerous and, on a somewhat less important note, not exactly pleasant for the person on his back, I started singing simple melodies in order to give him a rhythm, hoping that he'd adjust his walk to the song, start to walk decently according to the rhythm, and stumble less. What started as a silly little idea after having read an article about a study where researchers played music of different genres to horses started to yield surprising results.

Experimenting a little, I realised that firstly, it worked, and secondly, his favourite song seemed to be Over the Hills and Far Away. We got to the point where he would slouch fully on purpose in order to make me sing that song.

So yeah. Seems like he was pretending to be Marengo or Copenhagen bravely accompanying Napoleon or Wellington respectively into battle while carrying me through some calm, idyllic woods and fields...

romanticizing your life is such a powerful tool and it’s a shame that it’s mostly used by people on tiktok to justify the purchase of expensive breakfast smoothies when there are few better ways to force oneself through unpleasant shit than imagining a cinematic backstory for your extremely quotidian suffering

She is the wonderful mother of four children: Jude (12 years old), Habiba (10 years old),  Omar (six years old) and Maryam, who is only 1 year old. She lived most of her life during this terrible genocide.

Amina studied graphic design. Three months before the war, she finished her studies and started working. Her husband was also working as a driver.

And then the war came. They found themselves jobless. They were displaced, forced to live in a tent which has been floodeed by the first rain of the season. Winter is coming, and Amina's family urgently needs your help.

Her daughter Jude also needs treatement for her glandular problems, which she can't receive under these circumstances. And let's not forget that Maryam is a baby who needs milk and diapers.
