New Year 2024 (Update)
Tumblr media
Hello Friends. My apologies for the lack of activity, but this has been a toughy-of-a-year.
To start on a light note, I made progress in various areas of my life. First, I have learned to take better notes and organize my thoughts through a specialized system comprising nearly 600 notes. I bring this up as it has helped me progress in different avenues in my life. Schooling has been more straightforward as I've gained confidence in retaining the material better, in contrast to the years before. I've made progress in my writing to the point that I can better organize my ideas and develop outlines of stories circling in my mind for years, giving me the excitement that my dream of being a writer won't be a fantasy but an actual reality.
One of the things that has bugged me about this year is the feeling of uncertainty. Growing up, I was promised that my education would lead me to better opportunities, especially in wealth, but our current economic system has made it difficult for me. Every application I've signed up for has either been ghosted or had the dreaded "Thank you for applying, but unfortunately…" quote. All this book smarts is nothing unless you know how to get someone to notice your potential, which I still struggle to understand. How is someone supposed to summarize their self-worth on a single page of paper? I just never understood that. When I did get a response from somebody who I thought recognized my potential, it was nothing but a ploy to scam me out of two grand, which, luckily, fate was earnest, and I was able to resolve the issue before it was too late. Yet, it did leave me emotionally broken for a bit.
As 2024 comes to a close, I know that my trials are not ending but have just begun, as I will have to face many other obstacles. This has affected my mental health, as my passion for drawing has made me feel unmotivated. In just these few months, the feeling of worthlessness has overtaken me and has made me question every decision in how I've gotten to this point in my life. Have I just been this naive all this time? Am I finally understanding how dreadful the world can be?
To summarize, I apologize for the lack of activity. I would promise to be more active, but I can't say, as it depends on how things will turn out as we enter the new year. In these times of hopelessness and uncertainty, the best we can do is focus on what gives us joy. It's also about challenging ourselves by going into depths foreign to us, which will make us grow as a person. That is what I plan to do, as painful as it will feel. If I fail, at least I know that I gave it my all, and knowing that is a reward of its own.
I wish you all the best on your journey and wish you all a Happy 2025 🎉
P.S - If you want a good note-taking app, I recommend Obsidian.md. It really changed my ways of taking notes.

Gravity’s Rainbow — annotations and illustrations for pages 712-13 | The Man has a branch office in each of our brains
Illustration for Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Gustave Doré, 1876 Well1, if the Counterforce2 knew better what those categories3 concealed, they might be in a better position to disarm, de-penis and dismantle the Man4. But they don’t. Actually they do, but they don’t admit it. Sad but true. They are as schizoid, as double-minded in the massive presence of money, as any of the rest…

Cal Upsets No. 1 Washington 3-2 In Seattle
Game Recap: Men's Soccer | 11/7/2019 9:48 PM | Cal Athletics
SEATTLE - Much like the football team a month ago, the Golden Bears on the Men’s Soccer Team went up to Seattle to face an undefeated Huskies squad that was undefeated in conference play and ranked in the top ten.  And, it just so happened this UW opponent was #1 in the entire country.  But the Bears showcased a thriller and pulled off the huge upset.
The Golden Bears erased 1-0 and 2-1 deficits and finally took a late lead on a 79th-minute Alonzo Del Mundo goal to shock college soccer with a win at Husky Stadium.  And with the victory, Kevin Grimes became Cal's all-time winningest head coach in men's soccer with 203 wins, breaking the tie of 202 he held with the late Bob DiGrazia.  It was Washington’s (14-2-0, 7-1-0) first loss at home this season and only their second overall.

Books acquired, 13 Oct. 2023
I couldn’t pass on a used copy of the second edition of Steven Weisenburger’s A Gravity’s Rainbow Companion even though it ate up most of my trade credit. I used the first edition of the Companion when I reread Gravity’s Rainbow about eight years ago and then gave it to a friend I had been encouraging to read GR. He still hasn’t read it. I also picked up a hardcover first edition of Cormac…

FADO - The Saddest Music in the World comes back to The Firehall
Tumblr media
FADO – The Saddest Music in the World presented by Puente Theatre & Firehall Arts Centre photo: Derek Ford FADO – The Saddest Music in the World is returning to The Firehall stage from Saturday, January 14 to Sunday, February 5, 2023. Produced by the Firehall Arts Centre and Victoria’s Puente Theatre, acclaimed Portuguese-Canadian playwright Elaine Ávila’s play, FADO, is a tale of love and ghosts set in the back alleys and brothels of old Lisbon.  Telling the story of a young woman confronting her country’s Fascist past and her own identity, the musical is interwoven with the heartbreaking national music of Portugal known as Fado, which means “fate.” The hit of the Victoria Fringe in 2018, FADO won the award for Favourite Musical, with B.C.’s own beloved Sara Marreiros playing the ghost of Amália Rodrigues, the queen of Fado. The production enjoyed a wildly successful run upon premiering at The Firehall in 2019.  In 2020, FADO won the inaugural JAYMAC Outstanding Production Award at the Greater Victoria Regional Arts Awards. The Firehall’s Artistic Producer Donna Spencer says, “It is great to be bringing this show back to our audiences as it was such a wonderful success when we last produced it in 2019. I am delighted that all of the original cast members are able to join us for this production run and to be working once again with our partners at Puente Theatre.” Directed by Mercedes Bátiz-Benét with performances by Sara Marreiros, Natércia Napoleão, Lucia Frangione, Judd Palmer, Pedro M. Siqueira, Chris Perrins, and Dan Weisenburger FADO – The Saddest Music in the World is onstage at The Firehall Arts Centre - Saturday, January 14 to Sunday, February 5, 2023. Visit firehallartscentre.ca for show information and tickets.
