I feel like I owe Kim Possible a minor apology. In a recent post, I used Kim and Ron's romance as an example of how the love square should have been written. I've also talked about how Ron's the perfect example of a male comedy sidekick who is more than just a comedy sidekick because he's treated as Kim's perfect partner. I've probably mentioned Kim Possible other times, too, because it's such a good match for what Miraculous is trying to do.
Because I keep singing Kim Possible's praises I decided that I should rewatch the show to make sure that my nostalgia goggles weren't blinding me to some major flaw. So far, they weren't. If anything, I've been underselling the show. This is where we get to that apology I mentioned at the start.
Prior to this rewatch, I would have told you that Ron's importance wasn't really discussed until the later seasons because the first season of a formulaic kids show is almost always a testing grounds to see what works, so things can be a little rough. Plus Ron's importance isn't exactly something that you need to dive into early on when you've got a two person team. No one is questioning Ron's importance right out of the gate. He's there to be the comedy sidekick. No explanation needed.
Imagine my surprise when the plot of episode six is all about Kim and Ron getting into a fight about Ron excelling at their part time job while Kim kinda sucks, leading to Kim going to fight alone while Ron keeps working. Kim fails, Ron gets a call that she's in trouble, and:
Wade: Not important. Kim's in trouble. She found Drakken at inside giant Cheese Wheel but I lost contact. She needs help. Your help. Ned: Well, well, well. Looks like you've got a choice to make, Stoppable! What's more important? Your sacred duty as assistant manager or your role as goofy sidekick? Ron: Well, that's no choice at all. I guess it's time to say buenos noches, Bueno Nacho.
Dude doesn't even hesitate. Doesn't matter if they're fighting or if he's feeling underappreciated, Kim needs his help? He's there. Their fight can wait until after Kim is safe. This is why I love Ron. Total dork, but you can't ask for a better partner.
Ron's rescue attempt initially goes south, but instead of getting mad, we get this genuinely sweet moment:
Ron: Guess that wasn't much of a plan. Kim: Not as great as your Bueno Nacho bathroom-break chart. Ron: I gooned on assistant-manager power. You were right. Kim: I did resent your superior burrito technique. You're entitled to excel. Forgive me? Ron: Duh! Forgive me? Kim: Totally.
Boy do I love these two! Their friendship was so genuine right from the start. This whole episode is just oozing how much they care for each other, it's great!
After this moment, they save the day with Ron playing a big part in Kim's plan because right from season one, season one, the writers understood that Kim could never be shown to win when Ron wasn't around.
As you may have guessed from the cheese wheel line, the plot of this episode is pretty absurd even for Kim Possible. That's been the case for all of the early episodes, but I think that the plots are going to improve as the seasons go on because I remember the later seasons having much stronger plots. We'll see if that proves true. Even if the plots stay kinda weak, I've still gotta give full credit to the writers for their early character work. They really understood Kim and Ron's relationship right from the start, didn't they? And in a show like this, that's the most important element to get right.
Don't worry, I'm not going to flood your dash with Kim Possible love, I just had to take a moment to appreciate how good the character work was here. They really did want Ron to feel like more than Kim's goofy sidekick and they pulled it off while sticking to the show's absurd writing and formulaic structure. As Miraculous has shown, that isn't something that just naturally happens. It takes effort, so I had to take a moment to gush because I don't get to gush about good character work often while running this blog. I hope this also makes it clear that, when it comes to writing, I'm not looking for perfection. I'm just looking for a good time. So far, that's what this rewatch is giving me.

"Statuesque, I am Monarque!"
Aka my design for an Akumatized Nathalie
Nathalie gets Akumatized into Statuesque during Origins rather than Ivan/Stoneheart, but I wanted to keep a similar vibe while also making it its own Akuma
Tumblr media
Statuesque's design is heavily based off of marble statues along with the art of kintsugi, which uses gold to fix broken pottery
When I finally got to designing her, I realized how boring a grayscale character would be and when I remembered kintsugi, I was so happy to add it since this brings her backstory and reason for Akumatization into the design which is something I love about visual storytelling
Her powers work as a mixture of Timebreaker and Reflekta, as when she touches someone with her cane, she gets stronger and turns them into a marble statue of themselves that then act as weeping angels (the statues can't turn others into statues)

The figure that trudged through the Parisian night was unknowable under her disguise, but the determination and steel in her voice was a balm to the few nervous citizens who encountered her. As they watched familiar spots disappear into the gloom, they took solace in the fact that miraculous or no, Ladybug would never give up on them.

Same anon as before, technically the songs aren't compiled together in an official playlist, it's more just a mental list of songs that remind me of HEA/TF due to the lyrics, similar vibes, or due to me being into that song when I was reading
But I will share that list (and I apologize for my eclectic and strange music taste in advance):
The story of Us -Taylor Swift Friends -Chase Atlantic Budapest -George Ezra Golden Hour -JVKE Lush Life -Zara Larson Cruel Summer -Taylor Swift Heaven -Niall Horan August- Taylor Swift Forever and Always- Taylor Swift Poison & Wine- The Civil Wars I Wanna be yours -Arctic Monkeys
Anyways, thank you for allowing me to fangirl over your fic for a moment!
OMG never apologize for eclectic music taste i LIVE for that!!!
ok first of all i cannot wait to check out the songs i haven't heard on this list and secondly i LOVE all the t-swift on here. i think i have like three or four songs minimum by her on the playlist i listen to while i write??? i have a problem......
anyway since you so kindly sent me your list, here are a few off of mine that i always go back to! in case youre interested~
love story by taylor swift (because of course LOL)
what if i love you by gatlin (this is literally the first song i added to the HEA playlist when i started writing. idk why but it just stuck with me)
would you be so kind by dodie (the pining! the rom-com vibes!)
you were in my dream by laur elle (love love loooove this one)
you are in love by taylor swift (THIS ONE!!! HNGHNHGNHGNHG)
i loved you first by joan (this one has adrien allll over it)
backseat by charli adams (specifically for the scene where they're driving home from the first party in HEA. such a throwaway scene and yet it has its own song LOL. explain the logic. [spoiler: there is none.])
better off by trousdale (listen to this during the breakup scene towards the end of HEA and you will KNOW. PAIN.)
and finally, hypotheticals by lake street dive, which inspired not only the series title, but also the titles of both HEA and TF!

I closed the bathroom door to pee with a little privacy (other people with cats are already shaking their heads at me) because Weevil is being particularly clingy this afternoon, and when she’s like this and I go to the bathroom, she immediately jumps on my naked lap, which is cute but also. Honey I am trying to piss. So I closed the door, and now the baby is CRYING, she is WEEPING, she is scrambling her little claws against the wood and mewling, all of which is turns out is actually more distracting to the whole process I’m trying to start in here, on account of it being hard to relax when you are also wondering if you’re history’s greatest monster, so fine fine, the cat wins. I got up, shuffled over to the door, and let her in, at which point she ran between my legs and jumped up on the toilet bowl. I’m not sure what her end goal was here because Weevil is the clumsiest cat I’ve ever met, so she instantly slipped, got her front legs soaked in in the miraculously still unused toilet, jumped six feet in the air, and knocked over every knock overable item in her immediate vicinity. And now she’s SO SAD again because I won’t let this creature still damp with toilet water sit in my lap. I am raising a toddler with claws.

I am in love with the idea of Hua Cheng being intrinsically connected to Ghost City in such a way that he can subconsciously manipulate it.
Ghost City’s streets are winding and confusing, but when Hua Chengzhu walks through his territory, the streets straighten themselves out, creating a clear path for him. Strangely enough, Hua Cheng doesn’t realize this until Yin Yu meekly asks for directions to a certain location in Ghost City, still settling into his new position as a servant to a Ghost King. Hua Cheng, annoyed, snappishly tells him that it’s literally down the street and four buildings down, and that if Yin Yu couldn’t find it, then he was too blind to manage the administrative areas of his city. Yin Yu, confused and intimidated, shakily tells Hua Cheng that there are no roads or buildings in the vicinity of Paradise Manor, and that when the street does start, it winds in three different directions. Hua Cheng gives him an incredulous look and tells him to just do as he’s ordered. Yin Yu walks away defeated.
Hua Cheng secluding himself when the isolation of searching for a forgotten god creeps up on him. Ghost City, used to their lord disappearing in irregular intervals, doesn’t find it strange when no one has seen Hua Chengzhu for several days. Panic starts to set in, however, when dark clouds gather above the city and a torrent of blood rain falls from the sky like a bad omen. The ghosts become frantic, believing it to be an ominous sign that they had displeased their lord. Hua Cheng, who had locked himself in his room in Paradise Manor, weeps his despair and desperation into silky, crimson pillows to the sound of rain for three days straight. He never realized that he nearly caused a flood of blood in his own city. In fact, Yin Yu, who had taken up the responsibility of cleaning up the city, wisely chooses to say nothing on the matter when Hua Cheng eyes his blood soaked robes with a questioning glance. This happens rarely over the course of the next eight centuries, but it occurs often enough for the denizens of Ghost City to stop panicking when it happens. They call it ‘the crimson torment’ and have learned to be especially nice to their lord in the following days. Miraculously, the blood rain stops after Xie Lian shows up, and Ghost City is eternally grateful. Xie Lian learns about ‘the crimson torment’ before Hua Cheng does, hearing about it from a group of gossiping ghosts. But when Xie Lian asks Hua Cheng about it, concerned for his husband, Hua Cheng tells him that he was never aware that such a thing even happened.
Hua Cheng mindlessly sending out an attack towards a trouble making ghost in Ghost City. The attack is restrained and certainly not as powerful as it could be, but it sends the ghost flying into a wall anyways. Normally, that would be that, but Hua Cheng was particularly frustrated that day. The echoes of the ghost’s wailing pierces his mind and worsens an already bad headache. Xie Lian, who’s standing off to the side, hurriedly walks toward Hua Cheng and gently guides him away. Hua Cheng goes willingly and complacently, as he always will for his beloved husband. That doesn’t stop the murderous thoughts brewing in his head, though, and before he knows it, there is a slight rumble beneath his feet. His thoughts spiral out of control and he doesn’t notice the Earth quaking beneath him until the buildings and stalls around him collapse. It’s the first time that Hua Cheng is forced to acknowledge the subconscious control that he holds over Ghost City and that moment secretly mortifies him.
