BL doujin & Men Who Make Some of Them

If BL is stories of androphilic men by androphilic women, then what’s the opposite of that? It would probably be stories of androphilic women by androphilic men.

The latter is what Minamoto Kazuki mainly dabbles in.

Apart from straight & BL manga, he also authored Shoujo Manga Artist Minamoto-San Comes Out. Yeah, that’s the title. It is autobiographical if that wasn’t obvious. Arguably, his most famous manga, at least in BL fandom, is Wall Circle's Doujin Artist Nekoyashiki-Kun's Desire for Recognition Grows which got live-action adaptation: KabeKoji in 2022.

Androphilic male characters who create straight content is not rare in BL. In 2023, from what I can recall, we got two such characters: Sung Woo Jae from Individual Circumstances (2023) and Yoh from Taikan Yoho (2023). Jinta from Cherry Magic (2023) also writes (presumably straight) romance. Even before that, we got an entire BL live-action franchise (starting with The Novelist (2018)).

Doujin production and consumption

Doujinshi (doujin for short) is self-published works. It includes both derivative works (fan works) as well as original works. It is estimated that nearly half of the doujin produced and circulated are BL. These are traditionally sold at conventions like Comiket. These days doujin are sold online, for example through dedicated websites like DL site.

Doujinshi culture and Comiket especially has been instrumental in the development of BL as a genre. Unfortunately, unlike other BL pioneers such as Mari Mori (her 1961 novel A Lovers' Forest is considered the first BL) and the Year 24 Group, Meikyu doujin circle (Yoshihiro Yonezawa in particular) seldom find mention in history of BL.

BL doujin grew side by side with commercially published works. The original use of the portmanteau yaoi (no peak, no fall, no meaning) was an indication of plot what plot nature of those doujins that subverted the East Asian narrative structure to focuse exclusively on erotic relations. Doujin BL varied widely in themes and approaches, even more than commercial BL as doujin are not created to appeal to the masses, instead cater to super-specific fandoms. Also, it is easier to debut into doujin arena than to commercial BL. However, since these are literally ‘thin books’ in most cases, there is associated limitation. There is cost of printing to be taken into account as well.

As more explicit doujin (yaoi) and less explicit BL (shonen ai, etc.) coevolved in a porous environment, BL transformed into a successful genre in itself with numerous dedicated magazines and multimedia adaptations. Moreover, doujin was good ground for experimentation and yields in that arena made its way into mainstream BL and enriched it.

Commercial BL welcomed many doujinshika into its fold. e.g. Ayano Yamane (author of the Finder series) is associated with a bunch of doujin circles at different points in time: GUN MANIA, Shouhoku Taiiku Yougushitsu and Ouka Seisaku.

BL mangaka continued producing both doujin and commercial BL. e.g. Kizu Natsuki (author of Given) is a prolific doujinshika under the name Gusari in Sashikizu circle.

BL mangaka produced doujin of their own work. e.g. Ichikawa Kei (author of Blue Sky Complex) published erotic extras as doujin.

These days, there is pixiv among others and long serialization possibilities. Authors are less constrained by space – unlike physical publication, web publication is not constrained by real estate (number of pages, chapters, etc.). Thanks to the internet, the distance between doujin and commercial BL have shortened. 

A lot of gei comi (bara) is also self-published.

Doujin BL culture exists everywhere BL is famous with wide variation.

Doujin played an important role in emergence and growth of Korean BL. e.g. Totally Captivated by Yoo Ha Jin had doujin extras.

Chinese doujin culture is slightly different from that in other countries. Note-worthy is the self-publication of danmei (Chinese BL) novels. Three most recent cases against danmei authors [and their accomplices including those who helped the authors print, bind, package and sell those copies] were for self-publication.

There is a third. But the details are not available in the public domain.

It used to be a common practice for authors to self-publish uncensored versions of their web-published works, sometimes with explicit extras. These were intended for fans who wanted to collect these copies and to express their appreciation to the authors. Both self-publishing and “obscene content” are illegal in China.

Doujin, BL and their creators

Kabe Koji is the journey of a doujinshika, Mamoru Nekoyashiki, who yearns to be recognized as such and also as a beloved. While in high school, he fell in love with his childhood friend Kazama Issei whom he is sure doesn’t like him like that, thanks to rampant compulsory heterosexuality. Being gay was something he felt he had to keep under wraps not only because of fear of rejection but also because of heterosexism. Talented in drawing, he visits Comic King, a popular otaku convention where he discovers a different world – where male androphilia is celebrated in art.

This inspires him to cultivate his talent in drawing and to pursue a career in manga. Since the art he was most drawn in by was ero-manga with macho uke with bitch characteristics, that’s the style he pursues.

When we meet him, this is the subgenre that we see him focusing on. His influences are pretty obvious.

Moreover, the main character (hence the target of affection in his work) looks a bit like his crush. Issei notices this and tries to draw himself like that (with disproportionately thin neck) in little notes and letters to his Mamocchi.

[I honestly think Nakao Masaki was bit of a miscast for this role appearance-wise because in the manga Issei is more on the gacchiri (muscular) side of ikemen. Whoever thought Torii-san’s uke from Fudanshi Bartender no Tashinami (2022) would be right fit for Issei’s character. The actor clearly didn’t disappoint in any other aspect. This is like the case with casting decision in One Room Angel (2023) wherein a manga character with gachimuchi aesthetics was changed into a lean ikemen. An opportunity for a different body-type was wasted. No complains against those actors since they aren’t the ones responsible for casting.] This is an erroneous assessment. Nekoyashiki, while pursuing training and education in manga making, has already established himself as a fairly successful doujinshika known as Honeniku-sensei of Muscle Department Store. He belongs to the Wall Circle.

He is friends with Yamada, a fujoshi who is his support in creating, defending and selling doujin.

Such friendships are not too rare. For example, friendship between Yoh and Manju in Taikan Yoho (2023). And the IRL friendship between female danmei author Lan Lin and male manhuajia Liang Azha.

Yun SuAn's friend Choi is a BL manhwaga in My Damn Business (2024).

Nekoyashiki meets two other characters at Comic King: Framboise and Takkun.

Framboise is the president of a doujin circle called Bearded Beauties. He is very popular. He is not only among the wall circles each time we see him, but also is showered with gifts by his fans. He acknowledges that he has been doujinshika for years. His art resembles him – body-type, facial hair, moe. He keeps inviting Nekoyashiki warmly to a gathering of muscle BL artists despite getting turned down. His interactions with Nekoyashiki are precious.

Takkun is Nekoyashiki’s fan. He is inspired by Nekoyashiki and worked hard to establish himself as a wall circle doujinshika.

His rise from a consumer to producer of doujin and finally a wall circle doujinshika mirror's Nekoyashiki’s journey. Moreover, his rise is contrasted with Nekoyashiki’s fall.

Also, one of two characters on his doujin cover looks a lot like him.

Unlike Framboise and Takkun who draw what they like, Nekoyashiki draws to be recognized.

Nekoyashiki draws a second season to his previous work Please Suck on my Enormous, Manly Tits. Despite Yamada’s best hopes, it is not popular at all and loses Nekoyashiki his position as a wall circle doujinshika. He bids goodbye to Suck My Manly Tits series and to ero-manga sub-genre in general.

In a desperate attempt to climb back into popularity, he tries classic BL pairing. We get to see him reading commercial BL as a part of his research. This is an obvious mistake. Yamada wants to intervene but hesitates and ultimately gives up.

When his next doujin, My Perfect Boss Became My Perfect Spouse, also flops, he loses his resolve to be a mangaka.

Yamada asks Nekoyashiki to be more honest and expressive in his creation.

In the end, Nekoyashiki creates a doujin inspired by his own relationship and aspirations – a work that, Framboise and Yamada notices, is to Nekoyashiki’s satisfaction.   

It is common for at least some characters by male BL and gei comi mangakas (who have revealed themselves) to look at least a little bit like themselves. To see examples, check out the beginning of Massive: Gay Erotic Manga and the Men Who Make It where representative art and artists are placed side by side. Some even acknowledge this. e.g. Chinese BL manhuajia Liang Azha once commented on how his shou (uke) tend to look like him as he is today and his gong (seme) resemble his looks from his college days. Moreover, art tend to inspire clothing, haircuts, and other features which in turn inspire art. The influence Tom of Finland had on androphilic men of his days and they on him is discussed in his 2017 biopic. Similarly, mangakas are influenced by their senpais in the field and sometimes it is noticeable in their art too. e.g. Gengoroh Tagame’s historical works looks quite a bit like those of Go Mishima.

Other BL doujinshika in Live-action BL

Yoh from Taikan Yoho (2023) creates his first BL doujin, inspired by his ikemen boyfriend and their relationship, in collaboration with his mangaka friend Manju after his career as commercial mangaka of straight ero-manga takes a nose-dive.

BL Metamorphosis (2022) depicted the process of BL doujin creation in detail as the main character, Sayama Urara, embarks on that journey. Her friends offer her support, especially Ichinoi Yuki who funds the printing and binding. Sayama Urara doesn’t debut as doujinshika as she doesn’t set up her booth at the convention. However, one of the copies lands in the hand of one of her favorite authors Komeda Yu whose commercial BL work Kimi no Koto dake Miteitai was what brought Sayama Urara and Ichinoi Yuki together.

Komeda Yu on the other hand is a doujinshika turned commercial BL mangaka. She visits the convention in hopes of overcoming writer’s block and to rediscover her passion for drawing. She is motivated by the doujin that Sayama Urara created and emerges out of slump to continue with her series. 

Fudanshi Bartender no Tashinami (2022) revolves around Soichiro Hibiki, a fudanshi bartender moonlighting as a BL doujinshika, who draws inspiration from his customers and fellow bar staff to fuel his passion.

Minamoto Kazuki

While narrative drives home the point that the various pieces of art we see are works of respective doujinshika characters through haircuts and body types, the fact remains that most of those are actual doujin by Minamoto Kazuki aka MELU. He belongs to the circle: GOOD BYE LIFE.

• Despite coming at the...other one really hard, Miles's anger dissolved. This was even crazier. He really saw himself, but...he looked completely different. They shared every feature except for hair and suit...which is scarily familiar.

• "Baby,"

• His doppelganger said. His gaze was locked on the girl Miles realized he was squishing.

• "Come on over here."

• You nodded at your bf and looked up the anomaly. Kinda like "My man wants me so..." He let you go without any resistance. (His focus kinda fell off of you anyway🤷‍♀️)

• There was a eerie silence afterwards. The feeling of danger was there, but not enough to act...yet.

• "Listen closely, Hermano"

• ('THICK accent' Miles thought)

• "I'm really tempted to ram my claws through your chest,"

• "But we're in my girl's room."

• As he spoke, armor began to form.

• "So, I'm gonna be nice,"

• ...Miles knew who he was.

• "And give you a 5 second head start."

• The prowler.

• The claws. The purple color scheme. The terrifying digital eyes. It all resembled Uncle Aaron's suit. Suddenly, Images of his family flashed through his mind. He had to save his dad!

• In a matter of seconds, he had a plan. He shot a web at YOU and secured the sides. Of course, your Miles jumped to help you. But, that let him defenseless.

• Miles yanked himself forward bringing both feet into the other's chest. Promptly, crashing him through the door.

• "Sorry, Y/N!"

• He called, while running down the hall. Normally, he would NEVER use you in a plan. But, this was pretty serious. (Plus you were just against the wall, so you probably won't hate him) He yanked open the front door and slid down the stairs.

• This guy didn't just run from 1,000 spider peeps to get stopped here. That was until he got to the end of stairs. Another familiar face caught him. One that hurt.

• "Uncle Aaron...?"

• It was really him. Tall, chill, and bald. He even had the same fashion sense.

• "Miles?"

• It felt nice to hear his voice again. But he's been here too long to think it was actually his uncle.

• "What's with the suit?"

• The ex prowler asked. That made Miles feel a little self conscious. It was a cool look...right?

• "I thought you didn't like red-"

• A sudden sharp blow to the back cut off his hearing. Miles fell to his knees. Horrible dizziness was taking over. (Somehow) Looking through his legs, he saw black and purple jordans. Dang it...he...he let his guard down...

• "Do you think you killed him?"

• "No. If I wanted to kill him, I would've sliced his back open."

• "Ew, babe."

• "What? I would."

• This conversation awoke Miles from his darkness. He was tied to a chair and his back ached. He was caught. But he wasn't gonna let them know he was awake. From what he felt, they're 3 people in the room. You, this dimension's Miles , and... someone else. Anyway, he had to be careful. The prowler was strong and the unknown figure could be even worse. Slowly, he pressed his fingers against the ropes. Hopefully, the electricity would be silent.

• "What're we gonna do when he wakes up?"

• "I dunno. Maybe shake him down for answers?"

• "...Or I could kick his ass."

• (That kick did a number on his chest)

• "Maybe we should go with the answers. I wanna know where he came from."

• The ropes were beginning to snap! A little louder than he wanted, but a explosion was comi-

• Crackt!!!

• A steel (shoe) sole was smashed into his face. A pained grunt was only thing he could muster as it's force pushed his chair backwards. Blood oozed from his nose and lip. What the hell?

• "I told you he was awake."

• Great, the third person was his uncle. The shoe flew back, landing on his clone's socked foot. The mini prowler slowly approached him. (...Was he taller that him?) He stepped down on the middle of the chair.

• "Alrighty, hoss. Where'd you come from and when are you leaving?"

• The hero frowned, weighing his options. It was nice to see you, but he really didn't want to get any more acquainted with "Anti-Miles" over here. BUT, with his hands crunched behind him, he had to cooperate...well until he had a plan. He took a deep breath.

• "I don't know what universe...thing I came from, but I wanna leave as soon as possible."

• "It's important."

• Intrest entered Miles, but he chose to ignore it. He had no reason to listen to his shadow clone's life story. He already got his revenge so he just had to wrap this up-

• "What's the rush?"

• You asked, hopping on your boyfriend's back. Great, you're intrigued. Miles chewed the inside of his cheek. Normally, he'd tell you but...

• "Did you not hear her, bruh?"

• Irritation sat in the Anomaly's chest. This guy was seriously getting on his nerves. Oblivious (or ignoring) the tension, you continued to ask with your eyes. He couldn't say no to you.

• "My dad...could die."

• Saying it outloud made his chest tighten.

• "If I don't get to him in two days...a villain's..."

• He stopped and took a deep breath. He didn't wanna finish the sentence. You got the gist. (Plus, his eyes were welling up)

• "So that's why I gotta go imme-"

• The chair he was tied to suddenly flipped up and he was face to face with his double glaring at him.

• "Go where?"

• He said sourly.

• "This isn't your prissy, fluffy Brooklyn."

• "The place is hell at night, so you can't just go swinging around on a whim."

• He threw the chair the back, making the chocolate hero slam down hard.

• "Have a damn plan before you try to save someone's life."

• As irritating as that speech was, he had a point. He didn't know this dimension and darn sure didn't know how'd he leave. This was WAS a whim. But, it's not like he could sit here-!Suddenly, he felt a tap on his foot. He looked up.

• "Give me one second, hands-er, Miles."

• You whispered. You stood up and followed after your man. The next few minutes sounded...interesting. He heard talking at first, then it progressed into KISSING. Struggling. Uncle Aaron laughing and then a ticked off "fine." Did you just use the power of persuasion? and lips. Once again, he was yanked up, but this time by his suit. Dude looked extremely pissed off, but had to say something.

• "Let's..."

• The prowler heaved a angry sigh.

• "Let's go save your dad."

Hayden's Notes is one of my all time favorite comics/graphic novels and so I want to recommend and promote it, and it's creator Yufei.

142+ pages so binge as you please.

Hayden's Notes is a magic-realism mystery with horror elements, set in a fictional country in the first half of the 20th century. The comic’s told in a non-chronological order revolving around Hayden Carter, immortal (by accident) gray mage, pursuer of knowledge and a witty nuisance for everyone around.

There's a lot of sass and a grumpy detective.

There's also a bunch of cute moments.

Cat's my favorite character, then Shy, then Hayden, then Wolfe.

De todas formas si fue una SEÑAL que cuando llegue al hotel GRAN TIKAL [ciudad maya] FUTURA que se une a las TORRES SOL Y LUNA por un centro comercial en GUATEMALA CITY [por la semana Santa de 2009] el ASCENSOR se volvió LOCO marcando la PLANTA 52 [mi edad hasta 28 nov] y a continuación sentí un TERREMOTO [e impotencia total durante los segundos que duro]..y luego vi en la WEB de ELMUNDO.ES la PORTADA de la revista YO DONA con KYLIE MINOGUE y titular MAS CATALANA QUE EL PAN CON TOMACA..y llevaba camiseta de HEROES DEL SILENCIO comprando Agua SALVA_VIDAS cuando luego comi en un DOMINO'S sintiendo otro TERREMOTO..no creo que tarde mucho más en acabar esta PESADILLA de MUNDO

Por cierto..solo tiene 11 plantas el hotel TIKAL FUTURA [75 mts] y el ascensor cabían 13 personas=ULTIMA CENA

mechanic is not the best decoder imo.she isnt BAD but i have my gripes with her

if your teammates or her are injured then she literally gets a 35% DEBUFF TO DECODING. which is silly in my opinion for a decoder. and it can stack twice which can lead to a 70% debuff to decoding which as far as im aware is the biggest ddebuff in the game. and chances are, at least one of your teammates are gonna be injured at any time cuz if the hunter is competent and not friendly theyre gonna be on one of your teammates at any time! and theres a very high chance theyll get i injured unless theyre perfumer or really really good at kiting. so you have to take time healing which just takes up time that people could be decoding.... sure mechanic has good decoding eithout the debuffs when people are hurt but its better to have multiple people on cipher machines includi a decoder then having just obe decoder ob a cipher in early and mid game imo unless its like 3 out of 4 survivors left or theres a low amount of ciphers left! imo it makes her very situational

also her bot is very situational too! its good to have your bot decode because your whole thing is youre basically controlli two people so you can have an extra person decoding but it requires a lot of multitasking if youre not using it when youre literally on chair dying.... because the bot doesnt do callibrations, it will fail them and make you lose progress and greatly slow the decoding process if you dont controk it (you literally lose progress on missed calibrayions) but you cant know when a callibration is comi unless ypure controlling it and you have to do your own callibrations too. the only time you dont really have to multitask is when youre on chair and like obviously the extended chair time persona web is good here b as a basis you get like 30 seconds (more because you realky should bring snooze as mechanic but i dont know the exact numbers so lets say 30) to decode with the bot ubless your teammates save after half which is Very Bad imo cuz you suck at kiting cuz youre a decoder and dont have much to work with othet then ur persona build so ig you go down a second time yoy just die. 30 free seconds is a lot but it comes at the cost of getting on chair...

i dont think shes Bad just situational and hard to use to her most effectiveness... but idk im a noob at this gane im probably missing something

she can be great i just dont think shes the best,,, idrk who the best is though ill have to learn more about the game to decide tbh

also my opinion will probably change in the futurr

Graça, Paz e Alegria!

E o amor é este: que andemos segundo os seus mandamentos. Este é o mandamento, como já desde o princípio ouvistes, para que nele andeis - 2 João 6

Aqueles que não seguem a Cristo, possuem uma vida entregue aos seus próprios prazeres. Buscam o que é bom só para si e se esquecem do mandamento que diz que devemos "amar o próximo como a nós mesmos" (Mateus 22.38). E até nem sabem dele. Porque o coração deles é duro, estão longe da vida com Deus. Ou até pensam que vivem isso, mas nem sempre é uma realidade, pois a interpretação muitas vezes é equivocada e tendenciosa aos próprios anseios.

Mas nós, que aprendemos de Cristo, não podemos ser assim. Isso se de fato, aprendemos DELE. Nesse ponto, precisamos parar e pensar: temos buscado a vontade do Senhor para a nossa vida ou adaptamos os nossos desejos para "cobrar" do Senhor o que entendemos ser Sua promessa? Ou deturpamos uma promessa verdadeira para estar adequada ao que achamos que é melhor, deixando de lado o melhor do Senhor?

Porque se formos olhar para os ensinamentos do Senhor, nossa vida será muito diferente da vida de quem permanece alheio à vontade de Deus. O que é do velho homem - mentiras, bebedices, brigas, roubo, falar o que não edifica - não deve mais fazer parte da nossa nova natureza. E, deixando o que é do velho homem, tirando essa "roupa", devemos nos vestir do novo homem, que é segundo a vontade de Deus. Este anda dentro da vontade do Senhor, em justiça e retidão, em verdade.

Em vez de cobrar, agradecer! Em vez de adaptar, confiar! Em vez de fantasiar, crer!

Viver uma vida de acordo com os padrões de santidade escritos na Palavra do Senhor é viver uma vida diferente da que o mundo vê como boa. É como se de repente, alguém viesse nos oferecer uma comida que não gostamos. No meu caso, seria, por exemplo, o jiló. Por mais que alguém insista dizendo que é bom (minha mãe fez muito isso), eu não gosto e prefiro não comer (até hoje, a única pessoa que fez jiló e eu comi e gostei foi minha vó!). Por mais que alguém venha me dizer que eu sou "careta", que eu deveria viver dentro de alguns padrões que o mundo vê como bom e deixar de lado a vontade do Senhor, eu prefiro continuar sendo "careta".

E se alguém que não vive os padrões do Senhor quiser me dizer que a interpretação que tenho está errada, é claro que não vou dar razão logo de cara (vou avaliar e reter o que é bom), pois se a pessoa não quer isso para si, pode ter interpretado as coisas de forma superficial (como muitos acham que interpretamos as coisas por buscar viver ao máximo as coisas da fé em nossa prática de vida). Se alguém me oferecer jiló, eu prefiro não comer jiló. E, observar os padrões de Deus, segundo o que diz a Palavra, é o melhor, pois "o Senhor conhece o caminho dos justos; mas o caminho dos ímpios perecerá" (Salmo 1.6). Que bom é viver como o Senhor quer!

BL Terms: shonen ai & yaoi

There are several terms used to describe various forms of BL content. In transnational fandom, the most popular has been: shonen ai & yaoi. These terms have origin in Japan and gained traction in international BL fandom. There is significant various in what these terms mean within in Japan and elsewhere. Internationally, yaoi is used to refer to BL containing explicit sexual content and shonen ai for BL devoid of explicit sexual content.

Shonen ai category includes meant-for-teens versions of BL as well as Chinese BL censored content (both censored adaptations as well as self-censored works). These may contain allusions to sex and other suggestive material.

These words are used globally, especially in animanga sphere and scanlation space.

These terms have very different meaning in Japan. It is suggested to use boys love (BL) as an alternative to yaoi – shonen ai bifurcation, in line with Japan. But "BL" is slightly less popular among international audience and is an umbrella term. It fails to separate the genre based on sexual content and lacks in ability to reflect audience preference. In other words, BL as a term is incapable of filtering the way yaoi or shonen ai does. Moreover, sometimes yaoi is used by international fandom as an umbrella term, equivalent to BL.

Glocal

Also, there is variety in terms used in different countries. Danmei is the term most popular in China. This term is undermined by censorship. Web novels are increasingly tagged as 纯爱 chún ài [pure love].  Đam mỹ is popular in Veit nam.  In Thailand, waai (วาย) or “Y” derived from yaoi is popular.

Gei comi

Bara is the most popular term for gei (gay) content made by predominantly androphilic mangakas with androphilic men as target audience (gei comi). Since bara (rose) is a Japanese term similar to pansy in English, it is regarded derogatory when used on androphilic (gay) men and its usage discouraged on the basis that its reclamation by queer community is incomplete/uncertain. However, most international audience are generally unaware of what bara means in Japan. For them, it is the name of a genre of manga which is visually different from most BL. It is not as popular as BL, within and outside BL fandom.

Live-action

BL seems to be the most popular term among viewers of BL live-action. There doesn’t seem to be any yaoi – shonen ai type bifurcation between live-action content given the limits on what can be shown on screen.
