For my coastal Southerners who are experiencing snow the likes of which haven't been seen in at least thirty years, from a former coastal Southerner who now lives in the mountains:

You can play in the snow, but please stay warm about it. Emergency services will not be able to get to you very quickly if you get stupid and hypothermic about it.

Here's what you do.

You layer. Base layer is a tank top and leggings. Fleece leggings if you have them are the best. Plus long socks. Long enough to at least cover the bottom of the leggings. Tuck the tank top into your leggings. Your belly will thank me.

Second layer you want a long sleeve shirt. Any will do. And you want to grab a pair of pants that aren't jeans. Jeans are terrible at keeping heat. Go for slacks. Its the Bible belt, I know you have church slacks somewhere even if you arent Catholic anymore. If you're religious and/or don't want to wear pants, you want a THICK, LONG skirt. Find one thats courdory. Velvet. Something stiff. Put on some extra socks to compensate.

Now you want a sweater or sweatshirt. Gloves and something to keep your ears and head warm. If you wear an hijab you will be the warmest Southerner around. If your sweater or longsleevr shirt isnt a turtleneck, you want a scarf too.

The final layer is thus: rain boots and a rain jacket. As of noon cst on Jan 21, I know for a fact it is snowing across Mississippi and Alabama. You are Southerners. I know you have rain boots and a rain jacket, or something water resistant or proof enough to get you through the summer storms without getting too waterlogged.

This is important. Are you listening to me? Reading and comprehending?

You cannot get wet. Do you hear me? The wet will kill you like the Wicked Witch of the West. As soon as you get wet, you are cold, and you are done playing in the snow. Emergency services cannot get out to the rural areas in time to rescue your ass. They are also not equipped to ride around any more than you are. Coastal Mississippi and Alabama have bridges shut down and shelter in place orders.

So dont get wet. Stay warm. Have a good time with the first proper snow the coast has seen in my lifetime.

A lot if people talk about Alexander as though he is infinitely positive and never complains about anything but he is such a dramatic little bitch (affectionately). Like that bit in The Hound of Weston School when he's like 'I'm sorry, you want me to go outside? In the COLD? And RAIN?' He is the person who has a slight cold but announces that they are dying every 5 minutes. Naturally, Daisy tells him to die more quietly.

The way I think about Sam and Evan getting together romantically at this point in the story is that there is no point at which Evan isn't going to be Evan, and Sam isn't going to be Sam.

I mean that in the good way- that these are two people who have always had a strong connection to each other, who have always maintained the closest contact of the PCs, who are the most aware of the other's demons.

And also in the bad way- there are no future versions of Sam and Evan who are 'fixed' or completely detached from all of their current bad coping mechanisms, only versions of them that are different and older, and hopefully wiser.

It's related to what Evan said about love not being enough because life will happen anyway.

(Please read this next part with the understanding that I am not making a distinction between romantic or platonic love. When I say love I mean all permutations of it)

Love is not a seperate thing steeled against the hurdles of life by its purity or the good coping mechanisms of the people in the relationship. Love is a part of the life that is happening to you whether you're ready for it or not.

Love is learning to live with someone else in your space because it feels better to have them there than it feels to have complete control. It's learning all the things about this person you love that absolutely drive you crazy. It's about making a commitment to do the small things everyday.

I also just don't think 'staying plantonic' would do anything to spare either of them heartbreak if their current stated plans are to be life partners regardless.

If they don't date but still end up living together, and spending most of their time together, and are still a large part of the other's support system then I actually don't know that the distinction of romantic vs platonic is going to make a huge difference to the amount of damage they could do to each other if they don't get this right.

(Maybe that's not something you agree with but I really don't think romantic and platonic love are such seperate and detached experiences that one will survive something that will destroy the other)

Love is not a thing that is going to fix them. That's absolutely true. It's not the point of love (imo) to fix the thing that is loved. There is no point to love other than the loving.

Been trying to make a thick winter hat all damn weekend and have gotten approximately nowhere very slowly.

First was gonna do some cables (good way to make a thick hat), but my brain is mush and I just couldn't get math and tension to co-operate. Then I figured, bit of single color brioche is also very thick. Can't do brioche anymore apparently, as it wasn't working. Fine, I'll just crochet it--except now it's not warm because it has too many holes. Also, I've been using a very dark yarn for this bc its what I have, but I'm starting to suspect that not being able to see my stitches has been the problem this whole time.

So...now idk what. I still need a thick winter hat. Also need a pair of mittens and a wheelchair blanket as well as to actually finish that wheelchair bag (even more important now bc I ripped a huge hole in one of my prototypes on Friday and I dont want to fix it). Augh. So much to do. So little brain and even less arm strength to do it with.

I'm going to rethink my yarn choices and try for the hat yet again, I guess.
