What do I do if caught outside in high wind/tornado?
1. DO NOT PARK UNDER AN OVERPASS/BRIDGE !! Wind turns into a vacuum in those and you will be sucked out and likely injured.
2. DO NOT park sideways into the wind, especially if you have a tall vehicle. Point into the wind if you can. The likely hood of being tilted over is lower.
3. ABSOLUTELY LAY DOWN on low ground. IN a ditch is better if it isn't raining (please do not drown), but if there isn't one, lay flat with your head covered by your arms or anything else you have. You are much less likely to be hit by debris or picked up by a cyclone.
4. STAY PUT if in building like a big store or some place with a basement. Do NOT think you can make it home.
5. Tornadoes sound like freight trains. If you hear a train, brace yourself and hope. Keep in as small a ball/flat as you can with your head covered.
6. AT NIGHT, TORNADOES ARE ONLY VISIBLE DURING LIGHTNING OR THE DESTRUCTION OF POWER LINES. Do not look for it. Get in your safe place and fucking stay there.
Be safe as you can out there.

I’m seeing so many people doing stupid things during this hurricane, and I’m so confused. Did they not have hurricane lessons in school? In Massachusetts, we get one hurricane every few years and we had lessons on what to do, where to go, how to prepare in elementary school. Same with tsunamis, earthquakes, blizzards, and tornados. Only one of those just listed even occur here.
Like people going out in the eye of the storm. It was a huge point you never go outside in the eye because it can change in an instant and caused a lot of death in Katrina, people thinking it is safe, etc. Also, if there is suddenly no water at the beach, get as far away as possible asap.
Edit to add: Don’t dig super deep holes at the beach. They will cave in and collapse on you and the weight will crush your organs if the lifeguards can’t dig you out fast enough. Also, if you are trying to stay warm in your car in the winter because power is out, make sure your tailpipe is not blocked by snow or you will die :)

im gonna be serious here for a moment and say that there is a real problem with the safety of mobile homes/trailer homes in severe weather and it needs to be talked about more i think
yes, they offer affordable housing for tons of people (i am one of them!) but they offer pretty much no protection in tornados above an EF0.
permanent homes are destroyed from the top down. mobile homes fail from the bottom, from their supports, causing them to be VERY EASILY swept away and mangled into twisted metal, piping and insulation.
despite only 6% of the US living in mobile homes, MORE THAN 50% OF DEATHS IN TORNADOS OCCUR THERE. (63.2% as of august 23rd, 2023)
in my situation, we have one storm shelter in our park. we have over 250 trailers and granted, not every single one is occupied, but there could be 2-4 people in one residence. you expect EVERY SINGLE ONE of them to go to ONE storm shelter? my mom and grandma depend on oxygen, and they've told me many times that if we have to go to the shelter they would rather me and my dad go than to haul their heavy oxygen tanks in the car and help them rush to it. they told me to leave them there. it is a death sentence. not to mention there are many people here who do not KNOW there's a tornado coming until the sirens go off. they could realize it too late, get caught in their car rushing to the shelter.
and yes. a violent tornado could hit literally any state in america. tornados can hit Canada, Germany, China.. a PRETTY good chunk of the earth can. i won't list every country but it's worth looking into.
anyways. yeah. idk why im suddenly so livid and passionate about this topic but i don't think my feelings are unjustified.
and while you do not HAVE to reblog this, it would be really cool if it reached a large audience. severe weather deaths are rare, injuries are uncommon, but they are not zero. and they are preventable.

Yeah, sorry I know op said Americans don't interact but, I'm interacting just for your safety at this point.
I know y'all aren't used to those insane temperatures and I'm sorry. Keep up your electrolytes. Can't tell you how many times that's saved my ass during hellish heat waves here. It isn't just about staying hydrated it's about keeping lucid. I don't know if you have Gatorade or something of the equivalent, but drink plenty of that along with water. Dilute it if you must/hate the taste. It's salty enough, got sugars and carbs for you to get through this god awful shit.
If you feel abnormally sluggish and exhausted, you're cooking. I mean that. Like... literally. Cooking. Find shelter/relief. Op is so goddamn right about the fans in the window. It might not feel like much of a difference inside but it's 10x better than outside. I guarantee you.
Keep electronic use to a minimum. Including lights. You'd be amazed how much lights can add to heating up a room. During the summer months and especially during heat waves I don't even think about touching a light switch so long as I can help it. If you can, keep laptops off your body if you must use one. Little desks, small end tables etc. I burned the shit out of my thighs a couple years ago needing to use a laptop during a heat wave. Not fun.
Shea butter I believe is latex free and helps the skin heal, should you get burned. Its also a pretty nice natural sunscreen. It doesn't expire and if you keep it inside a relatively cool place it stays solid.
Try and keep the clothing you wear light and flowy. Sometimes less clothing isn't the answer, especially in hellish temperatures like these. You're exposing yourself to more of the sun and heat. Allow air flow on your body too.
I really hope you guys will be okay. I don't even like our heat waves here and like you saw above in Phoenix, the heat in the states can be insufferable. I can't imagine what a nightmare it is for a climate that isn't used to that type of heat.

also, even though this rarely happens, if you get an alert that says Tornado Emergency, that means you need to get underground or in your shelter immediately. Do not wait. an Emergency means there is a strong and violent tornado quickly approaching your area. There will not be time to prepare. Get down and do so as quickly as possible.
i live in a place where nobody takes Watch or Warning very seriously, because tornadoes happen more where i live than anywhere else in the world, and you never think it'll happen to you until it does. but as soon as the weather service declares an Emergency, everyone packs it up and gets their ass to the shelter.
Without looking it up, when you first hear "Tornado Warning", what does that mean to you?

hi this is a PSA from your local weather safety dog:
if i see another person seeking shelter under an overpass im going to lose my MIND!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and everyone in the US should know this information, no matter what state you live in. yes, they all get tornados and im sick of people (IN THE US) telling me they "dont get any where they live" or "they live in a big city so they won't get hit".
Tumblr media
idk those seem like PRETTY big cities to me. (btw an EF1 tornado is enough to flip A MOBILE HOME, WHICH YOU SHOULD NOT BE IN DURING A TORNADO)
so um yeah! its never a bad time to read up on this stuff. and i know people have such a fear of storms and i absolutely understand (i got physically sick every time i saw a tornado picture up until age 22) but im not asking you to become obsessed with them like i am. im asking you to take some time every once in a while and think: "if a tornado hit RIGHT NOW, where do i go/where do i take my loved ones?"
sources for the first image, the second, and the third.

This is very specific, but I wanted to point this out anyway. Project 2025 wants to get rid of A & P mechanics. That’s airframe and power plant mechanics. That’s all that means and project 2025 explicitly wants to get rid of them. They are the reason it’s safe to get on an airplane. Project 2025 also does not provide an alternative to who they think should be repairing airplanes and doing annual and 100 hour inspections on them.
As a pilot I can also tell you all the aviation weather data we use to determine if a route is safe, is from the National Weather Service. Which Project 2025 would like to eliminate. A Trump presidency quite possibly means safe air travel in America would be a thing of the past.
