This 4th of July I’m stealing the patriotism euphoria that’s usually associated with assholes idolizing the worst attributes of this country because fuck ‘em I live here too and remembering the things this country actually got Right is an important exercise when trying to rally anyone to want to defend it in November SO putting my money where my mouth is I’ll start easy and say I really like National Parks!! It’s rad how many of them there are and how they’re actual set up to preserve some of the most beautiful wild areas in our country while still letting people visit to enjoy and experience nature!! (Less important but I love how they put national parks on the quarters I think that’s real fun)

Feel free to add on if something speaks to ya!

#The hypothesis I’m testing here is that remembering there are good things now and then can combat apathy a little bit #and this is the one day of the year where everyone has a free pass to say nice things about the US so!#some other fun freebies:#public libraries are really cool!! Love visiting them and I should do that way more #bit of a funnier one but I think our interstate highways are really nice #like I’d love trains too but it’s really cool how you can travel the whole country relatively easily like it’s all pretty connected #I love how women have equal rights! We’re backsliding a little right now which is why it’s so important to latch onto this now!#I love how we don’t have a draft- this one might point to some other issues in the country #but at least from a surface level it’s great that military service isn’t mandatory #If you aren’t in the US and still want to play go for it!#today I’m encouraging everyone to pick at least one little positive thing they like #and then down the line if you’re wondering why voting matters at all #maybe remember that little thing y’know #Do it for the national parks and the libraries and gay marriage and stuff #humming-rambles #anyways that’s my social experiment for the day hope y’all get to see some fun fireworks later!

happy 1 year anniversary to the election results that were so fucked they had me trying to take my mind off of things by watching what seemed like a toxic chinese queerbait show only to find something far more thoughtful and genuinely queer and interesting than expected and end up watching a bunch more unrelated things that are talked about in vaguely the same realms of the internet and then watch bad buddy twice in a row and fall into an endless bingewatch of thai media (some of which is mediocre, some of which is bad, much of which is simply pretty good, and some of which is genuinely incredible) and go, well, it would be a waste of all this language input i'm accidentally giving myself right now if i didn't at least learn a few words. thus accidentally locking myself into watching even more thai media because now i gain serotonin from hearing a sentence i know i could write

#this is about the dutch general elections of 2023. i know another election is probably still on most people's minds #it feels WILD that it's only been a year. and at the same time. the government they eventually formed based on those votes #is still hanging in there. and it feels like THAT's been going on for way longer than a year #*#ah well in happier news! i think it's the way part of me is forever roaming the internet in 2011 #but even when a BL (or GL! which is finally picking up!) series is bad. or just boring.#there is something in me that can't help but go !! oh my god? there's a hundred of these out there??#and we can argue definitions and representation and fetishization. but there are So Many queer people working on them these days #and not all but many of these stories are insightful and kind and clever and have a very queer beating heart inside of them #(and there's also something to be said for queer trash tv. that has a place! but i won't get into it)#and this is really truly only a thing of the past few years!!! this did not exist when i was a teen!!!#i'm still so young but i'm EASILY old enough to remember that. and now All Of That is just out there. often on youtube for free #if you are a teen TODAY you don't need to pick between settling for watching tara die on btvs. watching ianto die on torchwood #or watching queer as folk. which is not a knock on qaf but it's not necessarily tv for teens #instead there's like. dozens of queer people on modern western tv! there are ever more queer movies where nobody dies!#and there's just a goddamn fucking impossible-to-watch-in-one-lifetime amount of guaranteed happy end BL series out there #and it's insane!!! that is insane to me!!!#and is also maybe a good thing to remember in current times. things can and do change for the better #sometimes in ways you might not expect. sometimes you might not even know it's happening. but it does

#so ive been crying since 5:30am #ive had to cancel my meetings today bc i cant face people #im literally trying to save up all my will power to be able to make it through class tonight #but i just can get over whats just happened #the next few years will break me i know it #ill make sure i persevere but its gonna hurt and its going to be hard #im worried about my grandparents who rely on medicare to survive and get their medication #im worried about my trans and queer friends #im stressed about the threats about the cuts to the board of education #if its gone i loose my ability to finish school #I /rely/ on those loans like it or not #how am i supposed to face my younger sister who dreams of going to school knowing she might not get the same chance bc loans are gone #how am i supposed to watch my little cousin with adhd and autism lose his iep #how am i supposed to live with myself knowing the right to my own body is threatened at every turn #how am i supposed to be able to look both my parents in the eyes ever again and not hold their votes against them #today i let myself morn my hopes i had yesterday #tomorrow i build new hopes for the people i love and those that will be effected by this coming administration #thank god my next therapy appt ended up being schedule for this fri #anyway thanks for reading if you did #i love all of you <3 and i know we can make it through together no matter how tough

huh... the way my parents showed me the world worked was really kind of fucked up, it's no fucking wonder i have an anxiety disorder frankly.

#this post brought to you by #i voted today #and it's really weird to vote in not just a state but a whole area where voter suppression isn't like just low-key constantly happening #and also knowing now it wasn't targeted at my family but my family always talked about it like it was #because hilariously voter suppression helps suppress ALL votes even the ones for your side so like jokes on the conservatives in the area #but like... the concern that I would do something at the polls that would make them turn me away was always constant #were my clothing choices neutral enough? did i have any stickers or pins i'd forgotten about? what color were the sample ballots this year?#if i only grab one people will know who i'm voting for better grab all 3 and then not use them because they'll be able to tell somehow #did they move our voting location again this year or is it back at the library? will the machines work? where will we park?#and like... yes you get a sticker but also will people somehow Know and will that get my ballot disqualified?#i moved to a slightly less-fraught area and still had all the anxieties and now they were tripled because now i was voting against my famil #and every election i have voted in so far has gone opposite my vote so i am Very Concerned about that on top of things #but yeah like. it's weird that it's so easy to vote up here. it's weird that there's so many incentives #it's weird and uncomfortable but definitely not bad just....weird #but also having a celebration of your first vote with a cake and a poll watch party where your cake is a fake ballot and your mom takes #a picture of you ''voting'' on the cake for the Correct Guy That You'd Better Be Voting For Or Else on it might also be a little weird #so like. different weirds #this one's better i gotta say #i'm just... just gonna sit and Hope okay #i've done what i can time to wait and see

#if the tories lose bad enough to make lib dems the opposition though… a guy can hope #I think it’s the fact that this is the first general election I can vote in that’s making me lose my mind a little here #I have done basically nothing but read today. I DO know a whole bunch more abt voting systems and the nightmare the tories have been now tho #I’m just kinda like. okay so what happens next? bc labour WILL do some decent shit but they also. fucking suck.#planning to look into the local green party once I’m back at uni bc I could actually do stuff there #I think I’m just dealing with a little bit of whiplash going from doing a biology degree where Everything is about climate change #like unambiguously it gets brought up in every topic (I DO focus on ecology and agricultural stuff and not like genetics but still)#clear consensus from literally everyone you talk to that shit has to happen right the fuck now.#it’s not even like I’m unaware of the state of policy rn I KNOW it’s a nightmare to do anything but we at least TALK about it #and then this election where it’s barely a footnote. biggest thing is the sewage dumping everyone’s talking about and yeah fucking finally #but is that all you’ve got?? the labour manifesto is bleak. it has a section and the stuff they’re proposing isn’t bad but it’s so little #and yeah no they’ve changed the official line on the manifesto to ‘make Britain a clean energy superpower’#I SWEAR it was different a few days ago #maybe I’m being pessimistic bc their plans for clean energy if they actually do them could be huge especially if they manage it by 2030.#it’s just that I know what the targets are and they’re already pulling back on shit like EVs bc of the shift right and I am So Tired #two party politics is a curse. as much as reform is an actual nightmare them getting a decent vote share might actually be the thing that #gets people talking abt proportional representation again bc they are nothing if not good at being loud #did you know we had a fucking referendum in 2011 bc what the fuck. and it went SO BADLY even though people generally supported it #god idk I think I’m once again being naively optimistic about people and election coverage has been very good at knocking me down a bit #people generally are good. Oh my god I don't have good and fancy words for it but I'm so tired of the fucking polarisation spiral. The whole 'those people and these people and their stupid barbaric selfish people and our good intelligent kind people'. The fucking separation of it all - "I won't do politics unless that guy stops being a politician, I don't want to play until the playing field is fair, I don't want to vote until those people stop voting". Oh my god!! Who do you think has the power to make the playing field fair!!! That's you baby!!! Are you really truly any better than 'those people' who stereotype and judge others? Of course you can disagree with someone, of course you can dislike a politician and their views and of course you can dislike it when someone agrees with those views. And of course you can dislike spending time with a group of people because of their views! But dismissing an entire group of people as barbaric and stupid and not worth your time and even subhuman (?!) because of their views? Be serious. How will that ever fucking help. Do you think separating the good people from the bad people has ever resulted in anything good at all ever? You know what helps? Talking to each other. Finding common ground. Good, you both like baking. Good, you both live on the same street. Good, you both like the name Ruth. Or fucking whatever. And then go from there. Try to maybe listen and understand each other for once. I'm not talking about forgiving people who plan on taking away your human rights or who would rather see you dead. Obviously. I'm not saying you should find the nearest 'bad person' and befriend them. Obviously. But take a good look at yourself pleasseeeeee. What do you mean 'bad person'? If you believe hatred is taught, have you ever caught yourself believing in the innate evil of a trump supporter, have you ever considered them beyond saving? If you believe empathy is human, have you ever checked if your thoughts still mean the same, does "i hate men" still carry the same value, do you still look at men the same way you did before you started saying that? Do you catch yourself stripping away hobbies and feelings and meaningful relationships from 'those' people, do you consider yourself above them? Do you praise and celebrate when people change for the better or do you hold on to what they used to do and put all your focus on what they still need to learn? A homophobe might meet a gay man and consider him one of the good ones, and that's a good start. That's not the end but it's a good fucking start. If your politics are in-group/out-group politics you are not helping and you do not have the interest of your fellow people at heart. If your beliefs have pushed you to the point you hate a certain group so much you think it's better if they're dead? I'm asking you to think about that a little, okay? Maybe go outside. Talk to people. Jesus christ.
