HUMAN FAN GROUP: Southern Krytans

huge thanks to NOT SAFE FOR GORK server for input and name ideas! also this was hugely inspired by @ratasum and their fanlore about asura cities.

THE WHYS

So! I am the Human Girlie in this fandom, right, and it's been a hot second since I made any fanlore. I usually dabble in small, worldbuilding and culture headcanons and rarely do I make full blown things such as this. However, little things build up and I have this whole set of cohesive headcanons about Kryta and Ascalon, and there's always more human lore for me to dig my hands into.

I also happened to make a Latina-inspired oc I wanna port to gw2, but find no corresponding equivalents, even in my own extensive worldbuilding, so the world is my oyster and I decided to make new stuff.

THE WHERES

See this lil blurred piece of the map, between Kessex Hills, Gendarran Fields and Claw Island? That lil waypoint is stupidly deceiving so in my head, this is where we enter the County of Greenriver Bay, or in the local dialect, Verderio.

Ruled, of course, by a Count/Countess of Greenriver. Do keep in mind, since my Kryta is inspired by France and therefore, speaks French, this would be Comte(sse) de Rivert, but we're not working with French here.

THE WHOS and THE WHENS

Generally speaking, Krytans live in Kryta. Shocker, I know. But even in the same country, there are differences in culture and customs and dress and the manner of living; so someone from the Reach may not necessarily have 100% the same manner of dress as someone from Kessex Hills, or make cook the same way.

Even before the time Searing came to be and a lot of Ascalonian refugees came to Kryta, there were differences between the northern and southern regions. Kryta sees a lot of immigrant and refugee groups from all over Tyria (human-wise) and different peoples settled in different places and shaped the place where they settled.

So this means that Ascalonian influence on Krytan culture is mostly felt in northern Kryta, although not entirely just them, and Orrians and Elonians have influenced the south of Kryta, due to access to the sea.

Over time, Souther Krytans - which is to say, Krytans of Krytan, Orrian and Elonian ancestry combined - formed as a quasi-formal group. I say quasi-formal as they still consider themselves Krytans, belong to the country of Kryta, but in the country itself have been recognized as having their own customs and traditions distinct from those of the north.

Do note that this does not mean there are no Orrian or Elonian communities elsewhere. The Orrian community, in this view, while small, does exist in the Reach and forms around a couple of noble families that weren't present when Orr sank. There's a vibrant Elonian district, Ossan Quarter, in the Reach. This also doesn't mean that they haven't left a mark in the cultural melting pot that is Divinity's Reach and Queensdale; DR is its own beast, and I'm talking about less cosmopolitan communities here.

All this means to say is that their influence is more felt in the south, where there are genuine, authentic Orrian and Elonian communities (modified by distance and time) in Greenriver.

I may change the details on Canthan influence at a later date.

THE HOWS

So, what are Verderrians like? What sets them apart?

For one, they have their own dialect, bordering on a language. Lines are blurry, but what is certain is that you can definitely hear a highly specific way of speaking here. We're talking phonetic changes - my mind goes to vowel shifts and how different vowels are spoken, and also to digraphs that make a different sound than they would in the north - lexical changes and maybe even a different system of accentuation.

Further influences on the language include relationships with the hylek, and the Counts of Greenriver have historically maintained a good relationship with the local hylek tribes that want cooperation, but have had conflicts and skirmishes with more hostile tribes.

They have their own literature. Certain literary forms - in a real world parallel, think perhaps a lai, or a picaresque novel - thrive in Greenriver, and belong amongst its culture that emphasizes tradition without rigidity, concept of heritage, and a certain lack of courtly decorum which is present in the literature of northern Kryta (and with that, less emphasis on chivalry as a theme.) Sea and sea-faring is a common theme amongst their folk tales. 

They are a sea-faring culture that forms the bulk of Kryta’s navy. Southern Krytan navigators and admirals are highly sought after. 

They have their own architectural styles. I am not visual but hey. I trust y'all will be able to picture things.

They practice a culture that appears different to the one seen in the Reach, as it is less influenced by Ascalonian settlement, and therefore tied to older Krytan cultural practices. Counts of Greenriver have been very vocal against the Reach’s unified humanity narrative, as they view themselves as Krytans first and foremost; they are proud of their heritage and view themselves as Krytans first, humans second. 

Counts of Greenriver have also, historically, not been huge fans of Queen Jennah and her politics as Queen. One of the key things they take issue with her for is the destruction of the Canthan district of the Reach and its rebuilding into the Crown Pavilion and have been demanding an investigation, although no real attempts have been made by the current government. 

They have their slightly different practice of worship to the Gods, carrying over Orrian rites that survive only here. They value knowledge and curiosity and make some of the most highly educated Krytans because of this.

Culture be culturing, after all.

no but really, I think it fits him really well! I had thought his UM would probably involve something kinda sleight-of-handy or pickpockety! and I looooved that it made such a nice loop-around back to episode 1. ❤️ I was. kind of half-expecting him to just run out and punch Riddle in the nose again. but instead this time 'twas he who offed the queen's head! it was great! and he did it while stone-cold terrified out of his mind! because Ace is the only remotely normal or well-adjusted person at NRC and therefore the only one who is like "we're going to literally die, this is super effed up". but he did it anyway!!!! I AM SO PROUD

i've said it before but it will forever and always make me insane that jacob's ending is to join the cullens for the sake of bella not having to give anything up. they find out jake will be immortal & tied to renesmee forever, so bella gets to smile & say "my family is finally complete! ^-^" but jake already HAS a family. he has a father and 2 sisters. quil, embry, seth and sam are like his brothers. jacob and leah were planning to run away together. he's always been welcome in emily's home, sue has been a family friend since before his birth. bella abandons her mortality by choice because she feels no connection to the people around her, but jacob has really strong bonds. it's clear that every character we meet in la push is like family to him, he's an active member of the community. jake would've graduated high school and been a mechanic, would've grown into a young man. a good friend, a fun uncle, a present son. he's set up to have such a rich life. and he's just magically compelled to give that up. beyond his control, he loses sight of everything, because his high school crush's baby is now the singular most important thing to him. he's perpetually 18 with his perpetually 18 year old girlfriend, running around vancouver or alaska or wherever with the girl who friendzoned him at 16 & her in-laws (who were antagonistic to him for months). and i'm just supposed to say omg yay now he doesn't have to let go of bella! everyone is happy! it's complete madness

i really don’t think it’s “typical dragon age fandom nonsense” for people to be genuinely upset about the world state choices. combat, level design, art direction, gameplay gimmicks, those have all varied across each dragon age game. the one thing that’s remained constant are nods to our previous choices.

i wasn’t expecting my HoF to come riding in on a griffon, but i can’t find a monument dedicated to warden tabris somewhere around the anderfels? lucanis couldn’t have some lines about the time that one arainai boy was stirring up trouble in antiva city? you’re gonna tell me that making a mage the new divine wouldn’t have some impact on nevarra and antiva? on the anderfels, the supposed most devout militant andrastian nation in thedas? you’re saying nobody in the north is paying attention to who rules orlais or ferelden? come on.

gosh though. this event has been SO cute in general! I was wondering who'd get the focus for year 5; I could not be happier that the answer is apparently EVERYBODY. :D all the dorms get their own special songs! so many cute little scenes!!! the lowest of stakes bringing out the highest of pettiness in everyone!!!!!! it's excellent.

(also, because I will make literally anything about my diaboys...I know these events are typically sorta, let's say chronologically unmoored with regards to story. but the further implications that this takes place pre-episode 7/Malleus' Big Existential Crisis, and yet...some of these lines?)

Wouldn’t it be funny if Billy could only give powers to one person at a time, so the Vasquez kids take turns being Captain Marvel Junior (as they still look like kids) and they make everyone thinks it’s one shape shifting child.

Reporter: Captain Marvel, who is this new protoge worth you?

Marvel: you’ve met Junior though?

Mary, who wanted to take over: yeah we talked last week.

Reporter: ah what

At first it’s just Mary and Freddy (mostly Freddy cause he’s really into being a superhero) so everyone thinks Captain Marvel Junior is a shape shifting gender fluid kid and Marvel is a supportive dad.

But then the other Vasquez’s join in the fun

Reporter: Captain, new protoge?

Eugene, in it for shots and giggles: Claire, it’s me, Junior

Reporter: … you’re Asian now?

Eugene: Both Captain and I have lived lives of many genders, colours and have been in many cultures. And yet you shame me for feeling nostalgic and reverting to an ancient form of mine.

It’s sparks a lot of debate of cultural appropriation for shapeshifters in general, with a lot of people invoking Martian Manhunter, fae and other shapeshifters. So naturally Pedro steps up

Captain Marvel and Junior both volunteering at a homeless shelter.

Reporter: … junior?

Pedro: yes?

Reporter: what are you doing

Pedro, making an ancient Mexican recipe he got from the Library in the Rock: making a dish I learned a couple of centuries ago from my then family.

Naturally this takes a lot of coordination, and a lot of people test them by giving info to one kid, and different info to the other. Solomon sees right through them cause the divine group chat is connected to Billy and the chosen Junior. Things were starting to chill for a bit. Then Darla joined in.

Darla, visibly younger than the other forms: Hi :D

Reporter: why do you keep getting younger and younger???

Darla: :3

At this point the reporter is so done. Are you a child with a lightning emblem on you? You are Captain Marvel Junior. And it seems to work most of the time.

Billy: *gets deaged as Cap*

Reporter: oh junior! New form? This one looks closer to Cap!

Billy: I’m not Junior???

Reporter: *bluescreens*

In a Justice League Meeting

Flash: So is Junior like a mantle? If so why is it only one kid at a time?

Hal: yeah, what do the others do when you take one at a time?

Billy, an absolute troll at heart: what do you mean, it’s the one kid?

Superman: what???

Billy: yeah so Junior hasn’t settled into which form they like the best and switch it up. I think they like it better that way.

Martian Manhunter, troll n2: *nods along* finding ones main form is an important part of self discovery. On Mars, many like to alternate between forms as they could not be tied down to one.

JL: ah

A scenario that was literally in my head this morning when I woke up: Hajime taking Fuyuhiko to a quiet corner to explain that he’s going to run and draw attention so everyone else can actually start living their lives, and Fuyuhiko being equally disbelieving and furious that Hajime thought they’d actually let him.

If he thinks anyone is letting go then obviously they just need to hold on harder
