A brief bullet-point list of the executive orders Trump signed yesterday. The tiktok thing is a distraction. If you are in the US, please read this. It will take less than 5 minutes. Gift article so no paywall
Some of the items on that list:
Freeze federal hiring except for military and immigration enforcement.
Bar asylum for people newly arriving at the southern border; declare migrant crossings at the southern border to be a national emergency; suspend the entire Refugee Admissions Program.
Terminate DEI initiatives across the federal government.
Recognize only two sexes; remove protections for transgender people in federal prisons.
Withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, the pact among almost all nations to fight climate change.
Declare a national energy emergency, a first in U.S. history, which could unlock new powers to suspend certain environmental rules or expedite permitting of certain mining projects.
Try to undo Bidenâs ban on offshore drilling for 625 million acres of federal waters; undo Biden-era tailpipe pollution regulations and other energy-efficiency, fossil fuel, and pollution regulations.
Open the Alaska wilderness to more oil and gas drilling.
Eliminate environmental justice programs across the government, which are aimed at protecting poor communities from excess pollution.
Withdraw from the World Health Organization.
Ensure that states carrying out the death penalty have a âsufficient supplyâ of lethal injection drugs.
Create the Department of Government Efficiency with Elon Musk in charge.

"The Environmental Protection Agency finalized a rule Tuesday [October 8, 2024] requiring water utilities to replace all lead pipes within a decade, a move aimed at eliminating a toxic threat that continues to affect tens of thousands of American children each year.
The move, which also tightens the amount of lead allowed in the nationâs drinking water, comes nearly 40 years after Congress determined that lead pipes posed a serious risk to public health and banned them in new construction.
Research has shown that lead, a toxic contaminant that seeps from pipes into the drinking water supply, can cause irreversible developmental delays, difficulty learning and behavioral problems among children. In adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lead exposure can cause increased blood pressure, heart disease, decreased kidney function and cancer.
But replacing the lead pipes that deliver water to millions of U.S. homes will cost tens of billions of dollars, and the push to eradicate them only gathered momentum after a water crisis in Flint, Mich., a decade ago exposed the extent to which children remain vulnerable to lead poisoning through tap water...
The groundbreaking regulation, called the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, will establish a national inventory of lead service lines and require that utilities take more aggressive action to remove lead pipes on homeownersâ private property. It also lowers the level of lead contamination that will trigger government enforcement from 15 parts per billion (ppb) to 10 ppb.
The rule also establishes the first-ever national requirement to test for lead in schools that rely on water from public utilities. It mandates thatwater systems screen all elementary and child-care facilities, where those who are the most vulnerable to leadâs effects â young children â are enrolled, and that they offer testing to middle and high schools.
The White House estimates that more than 9 million homes across the country are still supplied by lead pipelines, which are the leading source of lead contamination through drinking water. The EPA has projected that replacing all of them could cost at least $45 billion.
Lead pipes were initially installed in cities decades ago because they were cheaper and more malleable, but the heavy metal can wear down and corrode over time. President Joe Biden has made replacing them one of his top environmental priorities, securing $15 billion to give states over five years through the bipartisan infrastructure law and vowing to rid the country of lead pipes by 2031. The administration has spent $9 billion so far â enough to replace up to 1.7 million lead pipes, the administration said.
On Tuesday, the administration said it was providing an additional $2.6 billion in funding for pipe replacement. Over 367,000 lead pipes have been replaced nationwide since Biden took office, according to White House officials, affecting nearly 1 million people...
Environmental advocates said that former president Donald Trump, who issued much more modest revisions to the lead and copper rule just days before Biden took office, would have a hard time reversing the new standards.
Erik Olson, the senior strategic director for health at the Natural Resources Defense Council, said that the Safe Drinking Water Act has provisions prohibiting weakening the health protections of existing standards...
Olson added that the rule ârepresents a major victory for public healthâ and will protect millions of people âwhose health is threatened every time they fill a glass from the kitchen sink contaminated by lead.â
âWhile the rule is imperfect and we still have more to do, this is by far the biggest step towards eliminating lead in tap water in over three decades,â he said."

usually don't post about non-fandom stuff on here but just wanted to take a quick moment to say that what's going on in palestine is not war, it's genocide.
what the israeli government is and has been doing to the palestinian people since its founding is disgusting, and if you support israel, do your research and don't interact with me. if you support israel, i can't see you as human because no one with a heart would support ethnic cleansing and mass murder
they've been taking more and more of their land since israel was established (originally 56% of palestine's land, now they have over 80%)
bombing hospitals (they've bombed a number of hospitals, including children's hospitals, cancer wards)
over 10,000 palestinians have died so far in this conflict. these are civillians
palestine does not have a military. israel, on the other hand, has a military with about 20 billion usd in funding every year, plus billions in aid from other countries
israel cut off energy and water for gaza. why do they have power over another country's electricity and water supply? and why this collective punishment of all palestinians for something a terrorist group did?
bombing hospitals, places of worship, and collective punishment are all war crimes and technically illegal, but most countries and journalists are turning a blind eye to that
banned chemical weapons - white fucking phosphorus - are being used in gaza on civilians
over 80% of the people in hamas are palestinians who were orphaned by israeli airstrikes. israel is the reason hamas exists.
if you are human, please try to spread awareness. many foreign journalists aren't even allowed into gaza as israel is controlling access to palestine. thousands of palestinians have died, and many governments and media sources are supporting this genocide.
the more we keep spreading the message, the more people will know, and hopefully we can help in some way.

DAZAI HCS! âč
LAST UPDATE: DEC 19
cw: talk of mental illness and substance use/abuse, speculation about Dazaiâs fâed up past+trauma, Dazai-typical references to suicide, references to self harm, probably a lot of projection on the authorâs part
reid: i feel like yapping about Dazai tonight so hereâs a non-exhaustive list of general headcanons i have about him. no word count because iâll probably update this periodically lol
he does not listen to music from this century. he just doesnât. not that he goes out of his way not to, heâs just drawn to a certain sound that only older music seems to haveâI think The Smiths, Blondie, Tears For Fears, The Smashing Pumpkins, King Crimson, and Led Zeppelin are among his favorite artists
I think he also really enjoys classic jazz/blues/bebop musicâCharles Mingus, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, etc.
heâs anemic. Iâm of the firm belief that Kunikida buys him a 100 ct bottle of iron tablets every 100 days which Dazai always graciously accepts. however, he only actually takes them when he gives enough of a shit to (which is not often) so the bottles are just accumulating on his bathroom sink/in the cupboard beneath
nail biter, cuticle picker, hair twirler, thigh bouncer, etc. I donât think he really sits still unless itâs absolutely necessary
children love him, much to his dismay. they think heâs entertaining. he thinks theyâre like puppies (and he canonically hates dogs). he wonât treat them badly, but heâs just not super interested in interacting with them. unwilling older brother vibe when faced with them. shithead kids can stoke his rage much faster than Chuuya ever could
he cannot take care of a fucking plant. has one succulent in his apartment. itâs surviving out of pure unadulterated spite. he hasnât watered it in over a year
wearer of funky socks. his favorites are either the ones that say "I love my job ha ha just kidding" or the custom ones Yosano got him as a gag gift one year for white elephant at the office christmas party (they have Kunikidaâs rage face on them)
really sad that, despite his criminal record being scrubbed clean, he is still banned from driving in the nation of Japan for the rest of his life because he wants a Ford Explorer so bad
PROFOUNDLY SOUND KNOWLEDGE OF MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
heâs fluent in Japanese and English, proficient in French and Italian, and learning Russian
I think he also enjoys learning math/researching random shit/reading anything he can in his free time when he feels up to it. he never received a formal education and his IQ is through the roofâhis yearning for academia is almost like an itch he has to scratch every once in a while. also, he just likes knowing things
he never learned how to ride a bike. wahhhh wahh
BPD king. look at him. my beautiful princess with a disorder. I doubt heâs diagnosed but he strongly suspects it seeing as heâs so self-aware; if not borderline, he just assumes he has severe PTSD. either way, he really wonât do anything other than what he already knows about how to manage it
along the same linesâheâs been a functional alcoholic since an alarmingly young age (Iâm talking 16-17). I think it probably got a lot worse post-defection when he was underground, but he hardly had to function then anyway; he gets somewhat better after joining the Agency but still has a dependence, itâs just not severe enough to debilitate him
has a bin of art supplies in his apartment. he only ever pulls them out once every few months, but he rather enjoys painting and wouldnât mind getting better at it
master at darts. donât take him to a bar where thereâs a dartboard. he will stand in front of it all night and obliterate everyone who challenges him
insatiable sweet tooth. he especially loves anything maple, butter pecan, or butterscotch heâs a grandpa
UPDATE.1
I love to headcanon that he has a glass eye!!! and that the bandages around his head in the dark era were some legitimate injury. he likes to pop it out as a party trick/to weird Kunikida out
he feeds the stray cats and kittens that linger around the ADA dorms. he probably spends some of his grocery money on the fancy wet canned food and leaves it out with a big plastic bowl of water. sometimes sits and watches them eat and likes to give them little scratches if they trust him enough to come rub up on his legs. theyâre sort of to him as the orphans were to Odasaku, and it makes him feel closer to his deceased friend
on the note of grocery shoppingâhe only goes when Atsushi or Kunikida drag him along. keeps his list relatively the same from trip to trip: canned crab, cigarettes, bandages, a few cases of beer, sake, instant ramen, ice cream (particularly butter pecan), paper towels, and 3-in-1 shampoo when he needs it. Kunikida forces vegetables upon him (âput it in the ramen so you donât die of heart diseaseâ) but they almost always end up rotting to mush in his fridge. he steals his toilet paper from the ADA bathrooms/supply closets or bothers Atsushi and Kyoka for spare rolls when heâs out
religiously orders drinks from the cafe on his way in and out of work. on mornings he usually gets a latte with plenty of sugar and some sort of flavor; in the evenings he probably gets an iced flavored tea to mix or chase his sake with when he gets home
always has a pocket knife on him. probably one he got in his mafia days, or, itâs at least a habit/security he picked up from then
takes a lot of night walks. he doesnât sleep well, so I think he probably wanders out tipsy with his pack of cigarettes in the wee hours of the morning and scuttles around to tire himself out
UPDATE.2
two words: medical trauma. I know some people get iffy when it comes to speculation about what Mori did/didnât/may/may not have subjected him too as a young teenager (and believe me I have a lot of thoughts) but I definitely headcanon that Dazai was used as a little bit of a lab rat/sedated and coerced to some degree when it came to turning him into a killing machine. as a result, heâs got a fear of medical settings. after his surgery during the cannibalism arc? I know he got that phone back and was like âTanizaki get me out of here right neowâ
I think sweet little old ladies probably love him and he loves them too. always feels like he strikes up the best small talk with them. will help load groceries into their cars for them. he gets all smiley and stuff when they call him âsweetheartâ âhoneyâ âdearâ or remark how handsome he is and about his hypothetical girlfriend must be so lucky
he can throw knives with pinpoint accuracy from a pretty impressive distance. heâs a little less accurate with his handgun at long range/with moving targets but HEâS GETTING BETTER
has like a 3.5 ft vertical jump at his best. like why are you a detective when the Lakers need a center
UPDATE.3
lowkey a god at shoulder massages? heâll meander behind Kunikida at the office and rub his shoulders like a boxing coach trying to warm up his athlete mostly to try to piss him off but Kunikida totally just melts into it after smacking his hands away a couple times. does the same thing to Atsushi but Atsushi just starts fucking purring and almost passes out
I was talking about this with Kal a second agoâbut I think he and Ranpo love acting so gay at the office also to piss Kunikida off. they also ask him if they can be allowed to go outside and play
cigarette of choice is a Marlboro Black. I think someone has said/alluded to this before but I canât remember who. if youâre reading this youâre right
on top of his overflowing piles of iron supplements, I think he also has an unreasonable amount of reusable water bottles. reason being Kunikida again because I just know Dazai doesnât drink enough water and Kunikidaâs always buying him a fancy new cup to try to keep him enthusiastic about being hydrated. it doesnât work but his favorite one to date is his orange hydroflask (sometimes he brings a vodka soda to work in it. Kunikida is thrilled until he realizes his partner is tipsy) (Kunikida wishes he could fire him)
on that noteâother than sake, I think his liquor of choice is vodka. I do not think dark liquor agrees with him but ultimately he will drink whatever gets him drunk. and so ensue the Sunday scaries (and the every other day scaries)

I do not understand the culture that has developed on this site surrounding Gazan fundraisers.
I'm not talking about the scams, even though that's the hot topic right now - it's almost certain that most of the fundraisers being spread are legitimate, as I see it.
But I've seen posts actively discouraging donations to aid agencies in favor of direct fundraisers, and that's just... do people realize that they're hurting Gazans as a whole when they prioritize individual fundraisers over MSF or UNRWA or the other aid orgs? Do they understand that? It's not that complex an economic problem!
There is a harsh shortage of supplies of all kinds in Gaza at the moment. The surplus of critical goods is zero. This means, in practical terms, that every bite of food is being eaten, every drop of water is being drunk, and every scrap of medicine is being used. It should be a matter of common sense that pumping more money into the isolated Gazan economy will not fix this problem, because there is nowhere to import more goods from. Instead, for every family that is able to eat because their fundraiser met its goal, there's another family that goes hungry, because no new food is being created - it's just being moved from one set of hungry mouths to another. It's a zero-sum game right now - negative-sum, even, since pouring in money without supplies also drives inflation.
In comparison, donating to aid organizations allows them to bring more aid in from outside Gaza, and more efficiently distribute that aid. It actually helps Gazans on net, rather than merely shuffling around starvation.
I know virtually nobody on Tumblr is economically literate, but this is really not that difficult a concept to understand! Shortages can typically only be solved on the supply side! Giving people more purchasing power is meaningless when there's a strictly limited amount to purchase! You're cranking up prices, all in the name of helping the few Gazan families that e-begged the best, at the expense of all the others.
And people on Tumblr are so dedicated to this net-ineffectual form of aid that they're condemning donations to the organizations that stand the best chances of helping, and even spreading misinformation about them. UNRWA is in fact still operating! The Israeli laws banning them don't go into effect until close to the end of January, and UNRWA is the group best positioned to create systems to succeed itself. Yet I'm seeing posts saying it's pointless to donate to them now!
And I just don't get why. What is Tumblr's attachment to this particular kind of donation? Do faces and names have that much of an effect on people, that emotion overrules efficacy? Is it mistrust of anything that could be considered an authority with power over people's lives? There are so many people who truly, deeply want to support Gaza, but are nonetheless acting against Gazans' best interests. Why???
#hopefully this gets very few notes because i am sure to be tumblr-murdered if it spreads#it's racist to want to help Palestinians efficiently. instead of inefficiently. i guess.#mine#war#the Platform

So I have a few questions for the minecraft bois. (Btw, I freaking LOVE your artstyle, I'm just hyperfocused on minecraft because I've been in a crafty mood)
How does Raph react to Screechers? I mean, you say he doesn't have as strong a connection to the Sculk, but it's still there right?
Have the boys ever found a way to satisfy Donnie's need to be submerged (i.e. giving him a fire res potion so he can take a lava bath)
Why does Leo love Chorus fruit so much, and more importantly, will he ever be able to go to The End to gather some for himself?
How do the boys interact with their home environments? (Like, how does Donnie feel about Shulkers, does Mikey enjoy cooking using Nether materials, etc.)
Sorry if this is a LOT but ohnigosh I adore these boys and their silly little designs
I may have gone a little crazy whilst answering lol
With Raph and the screechers, They dont summon him, no matter how much they go off. Though if hes close enough to them then he'll get an uneasy 'feeling' (though it was random for a while, and had no clue why it was happening)
None of the Boys or April are good enough at enchantments and potions to start creating their own (yet), So making it from scratch is off of the table. (Theyve also been banned from attempting after April blew the side off of a mountain)
Instead, Donnie sometimes searches the old tomes in the End Cities. Though most of the books are unreadable now, the rare few are still ledgible. Maybe one will be able to give him immunity to water.
Leo got hooked on Chorus fruit once Donnie started visiting the End and brought some back with him. Its his favourite fruit hands down. And he always has a blast teleporting around. (hes eaten it enough that he can almost control where he goes but its really unreliable)
Also he thinks it's hilarious that sometimes when he tps an Endermite will spawn and Donnie will just go absolutely batshit trying to kill it. Peak Comedy.
Leo would do anything to get his hands on the fruit. Which gives Donnie a massive bargaining chip, which he flaunts a lot.
Until April finds the End Portal, Leos gotta rely on Donnie for his Chorus Fruit supply.
Donnie was pretty uninterested in Shulkers. They didnt really do anything (at least to him) after all. Though once he found out what he could use their shells for??? Their population took a nosedive.
And Mikey absolutely cooks with Nether materials! they're his favourite! especially the mushrooms. And with four hands, he can do so much more cooking!!!

The secret to my sudden thoughts is: being heavily hyperfixated on the octotrio to the point that they live rent free in my head and when I dissociate I picture mini octotrio swimming in my empty head (filled with water and fishes too ofc) until I need to snap out of it
I love the ever-growing list of adjectives that apply to Jade glowing does it ever get too bright though? I imagine cuddling with him and suddenly yuu gets ASSAULTED by the brightness of Jade and his silly feelings can you just- yk like find a brightness button
I keep thinking about yuu with a pet fish lol being a simple fish in a nicely decorated tank.. *two big eels slam the door open* WHAT THE FUCK ARE THOSE- it's clearly eel cuddle time duh (Somehow someway the tweels decided to gift you a clock with the white background except when it hits certain hour 'Eel cuddles' is written in it soo..CUDDLES ARE ON BABY) Floyd being Floyd and going to tackle you into the bed, dude your fish thinks that yuu is being EATEN ALIVE even worse when they stay the night fish thinks "Okay so my owner didn't get eaten cool I should sleep-" and hearing the spooky cackling of jaws now the fish has entered panic mode swimming around rapidly you can bet money that they are laughing at it
Also also eels doing headbutts when they want more pets (Floyd needs to learn to be more careful though)
-Vaquita
I think that Jade gets brighter the more intense his emotions get, Floyd is the same. The main difference is that Jade intentionally tries to be reserved in his mannerisms and expressions, and I think his body can sense it. To ensure that there are no miscommunications (after all, the wrong signal can mean very bad things under the sea) his body makes up for it by turning him into the equivalent of a hazard sign.
They'll dull and brighten softly depending on the scenario and emotions he's feeling. There are warning signals, which are fast, bright, and are accompanied by growling and hissing. There are the happy signals, which are usually just a glow that brighten when he's laughing or feeling particularly excited. And of course there are the mating signals, a soft glow that brightens up every so often from simulation. Usually, the glow will respond to the partner's own mating signals, signaling either a reciprocation or rejection, and continue displaying so that the partner knows if the other is enjoying their affections or not.
(It's a very beautiful display, to be quite honest. but it takes quite some time to get to such an intimate point with him.)
In Floyd's case, he takes delight in harassing your pet fish. He's really jealous, but he likes teasing small things, and you know if you really wanted to take care of a sea creature, you could just join him in the sea and tend to him. It's good practice for when you're eventually married, anyways!
As such, you're just chilling in bed with him (Grim is nearby, but just out of Floyd's reach) and giggling at the clack of his jaws. It's cute how sweet he gets with you! All while unaware that your poor pet fish is frantically swimming in their tank, debating on whether it should hide or check on you to make sure you didn't get eaten.
Floyd knows exactly what he's doing, and he just has to make sure that he keeps Grim supply of premium tuna up so that when the little guy translates your fish's language, he doesn't let it slip that Floyd's been mildly terrorizing the poor thing.
Then he'd get banned from cuddles and Ramshackle and that's just no good!

"Legislative momentum against PFAS has surged this year, as at least 11 states enacted laws to restrict the use of âforever chemicalsâ in everyday consumer products or professional firefighting foam.
The legislation includes bans on PFAS in apparel, cleaning products, cookware, and cosmetic and menstrual products. Meanwhile, lawmakers in some states also passed measures that require industries to pay for testing or cleanup; order companies to disclose the use of PFAS in their products; and mandate or encourage the development of PFAS alternatives, according to Safer States, an alliance of environmental health groups focused on toxic chemicals.
In total this year, at least 16 states adopted 22 PFAS-related measures, according to the group. Since 2007, 30 states have approved 155 PFAS policies, the vast majority of them in the past five years.
The thousands of chemicals categorized as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, do not naturally break down and are found in the blood of 97% of Americans. Some PFAS compounds can harm the immune system, increase cancer risks and decrease fertility...
Earlier this year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released new standards limiting PFAS in drinking water. Water systems have five years to comply with the rules. Even before the EPA action, 11 states had set their own limits on PFAS in drinking water, starting with New Jersey in 2018.
Water utilities and chemical manufacturers are challenging the new EPA standards. But states also are heading to the courthouse: So far, 30 states have sued PFAS manufacturers or key users for contaminating water supplies and other natural resources, according to Safer States...
Sarah Doll, national director of Safer States, said one reason states have been so successful in enacting PFAS limits is that more companies are willing to stop using the chemicals.
âWhen California restricted PFAS in textiles, all of a sudden you saw companies like REI saying, âWe can, weâre going to do that. Weâre going to move to alternatives,ââ Doll said.
In Vermont, state lawmakers in April unanimously approved a measure banning the manufacture and sale of PFAS in cosmetics, menstrual products, incontinence products, artificial turf, textiles and cookware.
âThe same as everyone else, like Democrats, we want to make sure that we remove PFAS and get it out of products as soon as we can,â said Vermont Republican state Rep. Michael Marcotte, who said his district includes cosmetics manufacturer Rozelle Cosmetics, in Westfield.
Democratic state Sen. Virginia Lyons, the chief sponsor of the Vermont bill, said it is particularly important to get PFAS out of products that are essential to consumers.
âThere are some consumer products where you can say, âI donât need to buy that, because I donât want PFAS,ââ Lyons said. âBut itâs really tough to say that [about] a menstrual product.â
Californiaâs latest PFAS measure, which Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed last month, specifically bans the use of PFAS in menstrual products. Democratic Assemblymember Diane Papan, the author of the bill, said it was particularly strong because it covers both intentional and unintentional uses of PFAS, so âmanufacturers will have to really be careful about what comes in their supply chain.â
While more states enact laws focused on specific products, Maine is preparing to implement the worldâs first PFAS ban covering all consumer goods. The Maine law, which is scheduled to take effect in 2030, will include exceptions for âessentialâ products for which PFAS-free alternatives do not exist. Washington state has also taken a sweeping approach by giving regulators strict timelines to ban PFAS in many product categories.

things the world needs to prepare for in 2025 in my opinion and why my advice is what it is: the rise of ai / automation of jobs, job loss, geopolitical tensions, war, extreme weather, inflation, tariffs - a potential trade war, a movement of using digital currency, the outbreak of another illness, etc.

Calgary's biggest water feeder line broke three days ago. The 2m wide pipe supplies 60% of Calgary's water. What I want to know is how this happened. The pipe was installed in 1975. Like, are they not monitored? Was leakage not detected? Are pipes not inspected? Like this is the biggest pipe in the city, how was this not anticipated? I cannot believe that it spontaneously more or less exploded, with no warning. Calgary's municipal government has really been listing me off, and this is kind of a last straw. There are severe potholes everywhere, lack of affordable housing is out of control, this freaking water main break, and we want to spend nearly a billion dollars on a new arena? Are you kidding me?
Also, if you're violating the water restrictions and/or fire ban - fuck you, you're not special.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
October 7, 2024 (Monday)
People in Florida are evacuating before Hurricane Milton is expected to hit the stateâs Gulf Coast on Wednesday evening, bringing tornadoes, high winds, a dramatic storm surge, and upwards of 15 inches of rain. Milton grew from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in a little over a day, fed by water in the Gulf of Mexico that climate change has pushed in some places to 4 degrees Fahrenheit (2.2 degrees Celsius) higher than normal. Veteran Florida meteorologist and hurricane specialist John Morales choked up as he called it âhorrific.â
President Joe Biden has approved an emergency declaration for Florida, enabling the federal government to move supplies in ahead of the stormâs arrival, but the stateâs Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, has refused to take a call from Vice President Kamala Harris about planning for the storm. When asked about DeSantisâs refusal at todayâs White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre noted that the president and vice president have reached out to give support to the people of Florida.
As for DeSantis, âItâs up to him if he wants to respond to us or not. But what we're doing is weâre working with state and local officials to make sure that we are pre-positioned to make sure that we are ready to be there for the communities that are going to be impacted. We are doing the job⊠to protect the communities and to make sure that they have everything that is needed." When asked about DeSantisâs snub, Harris answered: âItâs just utterly irresponsible, and it is selfish, and it is about political gamesmanship instead of doing the job that you took an oath to do, which is to put the people first.â
Before this year, Florida had goals of moving toward clean energy, but in May 2024, DeSantis signed a law to restructure the stateâs energy policy so that addressing climate change would no longer be a priority. The law deleted any mention of climate change in state laws. Saying that âFlorida rejects the designs of the left to weaken our energy grid, pursue a radical climate agenda, and promote foreign adversaries,â the governor posted a graphic on X that said the law would âINSULATE FLORIDA FROM GREEN ZEALOTSâŠ.â
Like DeSantis, Trump and Project 2025, a playbook for the next Republican administration, authored by allies of the right-wing Heritage Foundation and closely associated with Trump and Republican vice presidential candidate Ohio senator J.D. Vance, take the position that concerns about climate change are overblown. Project 2025 says the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, whose duties include issuing hurricane warnings, is âone of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry and, as such, is harmful to future U.S. prosperity.â It calls for either eliminating its functions, sending them to other agencies, privatizing them, or putting them under the control of states and territories.
The U.S. Supreme Court came back in session today in Washington, D.C. It has decided not to hear arguments about whether the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTLA) overrules Texasâs state abortion ban. EMTLA requires that hospitals provide emergency abortion care to save a womanâs life or stop organ failure or loss of fertility. Texasâs ban remains in place.
As legal analyst Joyce White Vance commented: âAt least no one can pretend we donât understand the consequences for women, & others, of putting appointments to the Court back in [Republican] control.â
The Georgia Supreme Court today reinstated the stateâs six-week abortion ban after Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney, appointed in 2012 by Republican governor Nathan Deal, decided last week that the law violates Georgiaâs Constitution. In his decision, McBurney wrote that âliberty in Georgia includes in its meaning, in its protections, and in its bundle of rights the power of a woman to control her own body, to decide what happens to it and in it, and to reject state interference with her healthcare choices.â
McBurneyâs decision came shortly after a state investigation revealed that at least two women in Georgia died after the Supreme Courtâs Dobbs v. Jackson Womenâs Health Organization decision struck down the abortion protections the court put in place in 1973 with Roe v. Wade. In anticipation of an end to Roe, Georgia governor Brian Kemp in 2019 signed a six-week abortion ban prohibiting the procedure before most women know theyâre pregnant. The Dobbs decision allowed that law to go into effect.
The Georgia Supreme Court stayed McBurneyâs decision during the stateâs appeal of it. Chris Geidner of Law Dork noted that the court did leave in place McBurneyâs block on the lawâs provision that district attorneys can have access to âhealth recordsâ where an abortion is performed or where someone who received an abortion lives.
In her attempt to reach new audiences, Vice President Harris sat down for an interview with Alex Cooper of the Call Her Daddy podcast to talk about womenâs issues. Call Her Daddy is the second most popular podcast in the country, reaching as many as 2 million downloads per episode. According to NPRâs Elena Moore, Call Her Daddyâs audience is 70% women, 93% under 45.
Cooper began the interview by acknowledging that she does not usually talk about politics, but âat the end of the day, I couldnât see a world in which one of the main conversations in this election is women and Iâm not a part of itâŠ. I am so aware I have a very mixed audience when it comes to politics, so please hear me when I say [that] my goal today is not to change your political affiliation. What Iâm hoping is that youâre able to listen to a conversation that isnât too different from the ones that weâre having here every week.â Cooper said she had also reached out to Trump, adding: âIf he also wants to have a meaningful, in-depth conversation about womenâs rights in this country, then he is welcome on Call Her Daddy any time.â
On the podcast, Cooper and Harris talked about the prevalence of sexual assault before addressing abortion. When Cooper quoted Trumpâs promise to protect women, Harris noted that he was the one who appointed the three extremists to the Supreme Court that overturned Roe v. Wade and that 20 states now have abortion bans, some with no exceptions for rape or incest. Harris pointed out that the majority of women who receive abortion care are mothers and that every state in the South except for Virginia has an abortion ban. For a woman in those statesâand one out of every three American women lives in oneâthe journey is expensive, hard, and traumatic.
âYou donât have to abandon your faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government shouldnât be telling her what to do,â Harris said. âAnd thatâs whatâs so outrageous about it, is a bunch of these guys up in these state capitals are writing these decisions because they somehow have decided that theyâre in a better position to tell you whatâs in your best interest than you are to know whatâs in your own best interest. Itâs outrageous.â Harris pointed out that she is the first vice president or president to go to a reproductive health care clinic, and she noted that those clinics perform Pap smears, breast cancer screening, and HIV testing and that they are having to close because of the abortion bans. She noted, though, that since Dobbs, people across the country have chosen to protect abortion rights.
The article in the right-wing National Review about the interview was titled: âKamala Goes on Sex Podcast to Lie about Georgia Abortion Law.â
On Call Her Daddy, Harris also brought her economic plans for an âopportunity economyâ to a younger audience. When Cooper asked her how she was going to help young people ânot feel left behind,â Harris agreed it is âa very real issue and we need to take it seriously.â She promised to address housing costs by increasing the housing supply, working with home builders in the private sector to build three million new housing units by the end of her first term; help with $25,000 downpayment assistance for first-time homebuyers; and enact tax cuts for 100 million middle-class working people, including a $6,000 tax credit for new parents to help them afford the costs of a childâs first year.
The Committee for a Responsible Budget noted today that a moderate reading of Harrisâs economic plans suggest they would increase the U.S. debt by about $3.5 trillion through 2035. A similar examination of Trumpâs plans says they would increase the debt by $7.5 trillion.
Meanwhile, today, Trump openly embraced the race science favored by Nazis. In a scattered call to right-wing host Hugh Hewittâs show, Trump called Harris a communist and liedâagainâthat she has let 13,000 murderers into the country. And then he claimed that murder is in a personâs genes, and âwe got a lot of bad genes in our country right now.â He has also noted that âit would be very dangerousâ for anyone to admit they were voting for Kamala Harris at one of his rallies because they would âget hurt.â
Hurricane Milton spurred meteorologist John Morales to step forward to take a stand, sharing his thoughts after Hurricane Helene hit. âSomethingâs shifted,â he wrote. âAnd itâs not just the climate.â He noted that with Helene on the way, âI did what Iâve done during my entire 40 year careerâI tried to warn people. Except that the warning was not well received by everyone. A person accused me of being a âclimate militant,â a suggestion that Iâm embellishing extreme weather threats to drive an agenda. Another simply said that my predictions were âan exaggeration.â
âBut it wasnât an exaggeration,â he wrote.
âFor decades I had felt in control. Not in control of the weather, of course. But in control of the message that, if my audience was prepared and well informed, I could confidently guide them through any weather threat, and weâd all make it through safelyâŠ. But no one can hide from the truth. Extreme weather events, including hurricanes, are becoming more extreme. I must communicate the growing threats from the climate crisis come hell or high waterâpun intended.â

I'm sorry I'm new to this app and I don't know how to make my name appear, I'm Hashem the person you posted about my old and new campaigns to. I wanted to tell you that my new campaign was banned I think it's because a lot of people reported it, so I was also afraid that they would ban both campaigns so I will continue with the main campaign
https://gofund.me/93568fb0
i'm really sorry to hear that, Hashem. it's been a tough few days for fundraisers here on tumblr, especially for newer people trying to share their gfms. i apologize for that in my initial post, and i appreciate you still reaching out to me. i will keep sharing your original gofundme here and make sure people know it is legitimate.
you can find Hashem on tumblr over at @hashemsafi125 - currently his own posts only link to the now discontinued second gfm, but i have shared his first one, which has been vetted by Humanity for Gaza on instagram, #425 on their linktree. you can also find Hashem's new instagram here, and you can also check out his contact Mehvish's page, who Hashem has been communicating with since April.
Hashem has nine people he is hoping to evacuate, meaning he needs a total of $54,000. this includes the evacuation as well estimated costs of medical care and other living expenses. it is $5,000 per adult and $2,500 per child under 16 years old. this first campaign is nearing its goal of âŹ30,000, which will have them about half-way there.
$25,000Â to evacuate Hashem, his parents, and 3 younger siblings.
$12,500Â to evacuate his sister Yara, her husband, and her baby.
$8,000Â to cover costs upon arrival in Egypt, including medical care, food, and housing.
$8,500Â to cover transaction, withdrawal, transfer, and conversion fees and taxes.
Hashem's campaign is connected to his uncle's account in Spain, and for that reason he is fundraising in euros.
in Hashem's words:
âBefore the war, we really lived a beautiful life. We had our dreams, our goals, our home, and a wonderful life, but everything is truly over now.Â
Yara studied IT and graduated university just before the war, she is a painter and loves to draw.
Ahmed was in his last year of high school  and loves video games - he used to be introverted and youthful, but this war has forced him to become a man.Â
Misk is in middle school, she loves reading, reciting, cooking, and writing - we admire her for spending her time in the war still reading as much as she can.Â
Abdullah, my youngest brother, is just a child - he cannot understand the horrors we are enduring and is struggling with severe depression.
And I was passionately studying medicine, so eager to achieve my dreamâŠ
The university Hashem was studying at, the Islamic University of Gaza, has now been completely destroyed by Israel, as well as the family's home. This is some of the damage IUG has sustained.
Hashem and his family have been displaced 6 times since the invasion began, and continue to live in fear of having to run yet again.
Hashem's mother and younger brothers are now sick from the contaminated water, and Hashem is having trouble breathing due to all of the smoke and debris from Israel's constant bombing. Recently, he also sustained an injury to his leg and has been unable to receive adequate care due to malnutrition and lack of appropriate medical supplies.
The family has raised âŹ25,685 of their current âŹ30,000 goal. again, this is only about half of what Hashem ultimately needs. Please keep donating and sharing Hashem's campaign wherever you can.
