From Gaza to Ireland: Out of the Fire of War to the Fire of Soul-Crushing Survival Guilt and Fear for my Family

At times of peace, having to be away from your family for months and years is a high price you pay for obtaining an academic degree or securing a better job. Imagine while you are away, they were trapped in a besieged strip of land and thousands of missiles rained down on that besieged area of 360 km² around the clock for almost 11 months. That would crush every cell of your mind and drive you crazy, wouldn't it?!

Imagine suddenly getting addicted to watching the news and the gory videos and pictures all the freaking time. You follow relevant social media pages that only show images, videos, and stories of entire families that were wiped out in an instant in an airstrike and deemed as collateral insignificant damage. While plunging deeper and deeper into an unprecedented state of acute depression, I wondered: how come all my suffering from displacement, fear, and hunger in Gaza for 5 months during the war before being evacuated to Ireland is nothing but a drop compared to my ocean of suffering now?

The constant thinking of my family in Gaza during the genocide and all the potential scenarios is consuming my sanity and mental health at a time in my life and a place where I am required to be 199% focused and productive. To give you a glimpse of my horrible psychological suffering these days: I fear going to sleep because I know horrible horrible nightmares are waiting for me on the other side. Some have to do with the horrors of wars I witnessed in Gaza myself and others relate to the horrible potential scenarios I keep thinking about.

Seeing the images and pictures of Gaza makes you think a thousand earthquakes hit every neighborhood of the Gaza Strip! Nothing and no one has been spared. The horrific war has turned the place into a hell on earth, unfortunately. How can young people have any hope for a better future seeing the mass destruction and the relentless Israeli efforts to stifle Gaza and squeeze hope out of its people as a form of collective punishment. How monstrous and heartless!!!

Amid all this chaos and madness, my number one priority and focus is evacuating my family to Egypt as a first step and hopefully reuniting with them in Ireland at a later stage.

Hello, thank you! There's a ton of media that influenced mostly "the vibes" I strive for in my story-telling and art. I would consider my favorites/inspirations/recommendations to all be one and the same, so, here's a short list of some of the media that I think about often when I'm indulging in creative outlets of my own:

THE DEVILS (1971) Is probably my favorite movie of all time. I feel like watching it set off a shift in my work that's been ongoing since then - I realize that this film is in every stupid "MoSt diSTurBinG mOVIeS oF AlL tiMe" article but like, it REALLY isn't at all as disturbing as it is an amazingly shot, written, and acted film. I borrow a lot from the type of humor in the movie (I even feel like that's Particularly blatant in this blog) and the absurdity of the plot that's sprinkled in with truly grounding and heart-wrenching moments. To me, this is a highly valuable piece of art and history that I hope survives it's "fucked up movie"-branded resurgence.

I also think often about Green Knight, The Lighthouse, and ... The Sopranos LOL

I like a lot of games, but the ones I feel had an impact on my art the most would be Pathologic, Scorn, Fear & Hunger and, of course, BG3.

I don't read a lot, and when I do it's rarely ever fiction, but I did read Blood Meridian last year (kind of fiction, kind of not, but mostly narrative driven rather than historical I'd argue) and it undoubtedly had an impact on me on top of becoming my new my favorite book.

Unfortunately I'm not really a comic's guy, I really like Jason Shawn Alexander's and Sean Murphy's stuff but only for the art.

Hey Tumblr, shut up for a moment, I gotta talk about AMBESSA.

Spoilers For Arcane

Alright, enough preamble. I think a lot of great stuff came out of Arcane. As an Ekko main I ate. As a lover of Goddesses, Mel restored my faith. As a hater of Jayce. As a Vi player, I had much to celebrate, but as an appreciator of intimidating characters, I witnessed art.

From the first moment she appears in this series, Ambessa establishes herself as a person who earned the right to be alive. She strolls into Piltover like she already owns the place, and all this woman sees is something she can bend to her will. She starts so unbothered that one of the first thing she does is grab a pretty twink, and one of the second things she does is bathe butt ass naked in front of Jayce to assert her dominance, just in case he somehow thought she wasn't the most powerful person in the city. In season 1 Ambessa comes in to give us an end goal, but it's season two where we actually see how dangerous she is.

And boy is that woman, DANGEROUS.

They could have just made her a burly terrifying thing that compels you to do what she wants because you don't want to throw hands with her, but it is her mind that makes her the most terrifying. Like I said, she earned the right to live. This wasn't just a woman who was good at killing her opponents, this was a tactician, whose presence on the battlefield meant that the battle was already won. She saw the holes in your defensive line. She saw the dissent in your soldiers' eyes. She saw the hunger in your right hand man's heart. And she saw that winning the war wouldn't have to wait till your guard was down, but when it was so high up that a firecracker would send it past its boiling point. When she came into Piltover, she immediately saw how easy it was to get what she wants, and knew all it'd take was the right words and the waiting game.

Worst of all?

She does it from the frontline.

While watching Season 2 I said at a point that Ambessa is not an opulent dagger, but a sharp rock, and yet still more precise than a scalpel. When it's time to siege Piltover she is on the front line, not just to inspire her soldiers but to get you to tell her exactly where you are. Gaze upon that video I linked above, one more time. By that point Caitlyn has lost to this woman about three different times. Maybe four or five if you count how she used the Kiraman name. Still, let's see if we can count them.

1. Caitlyn fails miserably to snipe her.

2. A lot of her resources go toward destroying a decoy.

3. Ambessa was almost literally in her bedroom, and even told her as much.

By this point, Caitlyn has no choice but to throw hands, and in doing so only wracks up more losses. That spear Ambessa threw so hard it ricocheted off of Mel's shield? Caitlyn wasn't ready for that! She also wasn't ready for that full course meal of paws Ambessa put on her, but she ate them nevertheless.

I could argue that Cait got some good hits in too, considering she had a blade in her, but she got that blade courtesy of Ambessa in the first place, and with Mel backing her up, she also only got as far as she did because of Ambessa again. How do they end up winning? Still Ambessa, because she was such a threat that even Leblanc's conniving ass didn't trifle with her. The win condition was basically, "get that thing off of her because she has enemies with more power than us!" And those enemies were clearly shaking, because The Black Rose could not let her get her hands on the Arcane. The only advantage they had was magic, subterfuge, and the fact that Ambessa is a mother, and only one of those was a sure fire thing in the end.

Tumblr, hear me, writing Tumblr especially. I know some of you are celebrating CaitVi and some of you are mourning the ship that could never be, JayceViktor. Some still, are in tears. And others, like myself, are reminding you that EKKO HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE GOAT. But, before the flames of Arcane hype die down, remember Ambessa. Fear Ambessa. And the next time you think of a well-written villain and how you want to write one, remember that she's got a good damn formula.

And before you blow me off like you can take her in a fight, remember as well, that she left the show making Caitlyn's character design 1000% better.

In conclusion? Rework Amumu, since I've already said what I had to say.

having started watching Wild Life, my autistic ass is now trying to assign the wildcards to tma entities

the snails are easy, they're obviously hunt, but i'm not so sure about the others. the changing sizes in the first episode is kinda giving spiral? possibly flesh. and i think the food switching in the second one could be corruption? mainly based on the hunger/starvation/various poisoning effects

you're the only other person i've seen talk about both so uh. d'you have any thoughts?

I was actually thinking about this exactly while watching the latest episodes! The snails had initially struck me as corruption, being slimy little bug-adjacent creatures, but that's so purely aesthetic that the moment you see them in action it's just incredibly clear that they're just straight up The Hunt, as clear cut as it could possibly be tbh.

Maybe a bit of The End with the whole instant kill thing, the invincibility/immortality of the snails, and the kind of inevitability of the snails getting you eventually

The other two are definitely a lot harder

Session 2's gimmick of not being able to eat food / having to eat blocks, with it's themes of eating, kinda reminds me of a lot of Flesh statements in first thought tbh, but without any actual meat (and in fact, meat being the one thing they solidly can't eat) it just doesn't seem to follow through on more than a shallow level. Though maybe from the more fandom angle with the gore-ish-ness of teeth cracking on stone, and how bloody swallowing your own sword incorrectly would be, that kinda fits Flesh

Thinking on the actual energy of that gimmick as it played out in the videos, with the huge change and upset to normalcy that leads to catastrophic results and mass panic, I almost want to say it has some Extinction vibes, but without the "man made"/"we brought this upon ourselves" aspect I'm not sure it quite works out

The Corruption idea I don't think I would have thought of on my own, but it makes some sense too. The whole idea of food making you sick, or of all the other ill affects from just trying not to starve/die, the variety of ways you're almost guaranteed to get poisoned and hurt before you figure out something actually edible..

Corruption and Buried are also both fun to consider with the imagery of having to eat dirt and the like. Buried doesn't have any other relevance tho as far as I can think

Rhyme's suggested The Stranger, as it's solidly an example of the familiar being made unfamiliar, but most manifestations of The Stranger play very heavily on it being other people that are strange and weird, in my observations, so I'm not sure if it's quite right

Spiral also works well with the familiar being bad incomprehensible tho I think. The gimmick doesn't make them doubt reality, but it does rely a lot on them being confused and no longer being able to understand and rely on what should be such a basic backbone to reality (eating food makes you less hungry). A lot of the fear and panic on that session comes from that I think, the logic of world not working the way it should, which fits Spiral fairly well

Session 1 I honestly don't know about. The size changing mechanic didn't strike as much fear into everyone as the other two, which makes it a bit harder to categorize what fear it does cause

Maybe The Buried at times, because there were concerns about getting too big in spaces that were too small

Or The Vast, because of the whole "too big" idea in and of itself, and how getting too big could theoretically play into fear of heights (though it didn't much actually do so in the videos). It also had several incidents of falling to deaths, which is pretty fitting for The Vast. Vast feels like the most aesthetically fitting tho, with heights and sizes being pretty big things with it

Spiral and Flesh definitely make sense too though, playing off of the idea of your very self changing. Constantly shrinking and growing with only a certain level of control to it does kinda feel body-horror-ish, and the whole questioning if what even was changing and if their sizes were changing at the begining could also play into spiral ideas. The whole thing was a bit dream-like

"theyre just good!" - who's lila?, the world ends with you, return of the obra dinn, hylics 2, portal 1&2, ghost trick, outer wilds (however outer wilds may be difficult for whatever reason- i recommend hollow_tones on twitch's streams although she has not streamed the dlc!)

series that have taken over my life for periods of time, for good or ill - dragon age (2 is my fav, all are worth playing, inquisition is dogshit storywise but has good gameplay, centrist liberal writers that make u want to bomb a church (for the record @ fbi this is a reference to the events of one of my favorite characters in the series, not real life. he was justified), ace attorney (1-3 are great with some questionable moments but apollo justice is the best overall game, 5&6 are some of the worst games ive played in my life, and the great ace attorney... exists), and persona (UGH). i can go more in depth about any of these, but i will go more in depth about persona because thats my current disorder and because theyre the most problematic, LOL. but dgmw da and aa are also problematic in many ways

persona - ive posted about it. im realizing i didnt talk about the misogyny in that post because i thought it was well known honestly but like. my god. the misogyny. especially persona 5 royal. dont play 4. or do, bc i need anyone to suffer as i have, but im serious. i feel like whatever people say, its worse. ive also posted about 4.

if you want to lose a week of your life in a "game for 16ish hours, sleep for 8ish hours, repeat" cycle play baldurs gate 3. its a fun game it takes up your time it has great mechanics! do not pay attention to character discourse baby.

if you like good gameplay, play dishonored 1&2

if you don't like good gameplay, play morrowind (this is kind of a joke in that i dont actually think morrowind has bad gameplay, but it still can be tedious.)

if you don't like good gameplay, play the persona 2 duology (this is not a joke, the gameplay in those games are actually bad.)

if you like gameplay, play any katamari game

also gonna plug one of my favorite genres, nonlinear visual novel adjacent games (lots of wordy, story-based segments but there are actual gameplay portions) these games also are not necessarily "good" but they are "fun": 999 (play on DS!!), ai the somnium files (note that this and 999 kind of require a... specific taste with the sexual humor) these games did have sequels but theyre all pretty bad for various reasons but check em out if you enjoyed the originals, paranormasight (one of the best ones in this genre imo), gnosia, 13 sentinels

also i have not hopped on final fantasy 7 (ORIGINAL) but i am about to hop on final fantasy 7 (ORIGINAL). and i am currently struggling against the current playing smt iii nocturne.

also, games that i have not played but interest me storywise and deserve honorable mentions are baroque (not really planning on playing but planning on watching stuff), pathologic classic (played a little and watched a full playthrough years ago, probably will get back to one day), pathologic 2 (never completed), fear and hunger (played for a few hours and decided to watch a playthrough instead), and fear and hunger 2 (not played but planning on playing bc ive heard its a little more user friendly than the original!)

Fear and hunger 2 is ripping me apart and spitting on my grave. I just spent the past several hours going to key locations over and over again and fighting god awfully hard bosses, using strategies that let me get by just barely to have enough healing items for the next area. Though eventually I did it. I beat the bosses and finally did the requirements I needed to unlock what I believe is the final location to reach some kind of resolution. I would have preferred saving before continuing (honestly I felt this whenever I made any kind of substantial progress), before I probably fight, what I guess is going to be the final boss, but through testing beforehand I have no way of saving that lets me keep my party members. I considered it but, the state I'm currently in, I think trying to go into the end game with just myself is straight impossible with the resources I have. On the other hand, the only other method of saving, I unknowingly cut myself off of hours ago by letting a certain character die and that making a certain shopkeeper that gives me a very expensive save item disappear for the rest of my run. So, going forward was my only option and I was at the point where I would be happy at least being able to attempt fighting the final boss. I go into the area, go into one off shoot room and immediately get burned alive by a a random soldier I both had no time to react to and had no way of knowing that he was there. My favorite part was how long it took me to burn to death. I just had to watch my character get burned alive for several seconds just blindly hoping maybe this is a scripted event from how long it was taking. It was not. Being brought back to the title screen I realize I now have about three options infront of me. Option 1, I go back to my most recent save, go through the previously mentioned hell again just to maybe hope I can skim by in the final section if I'm just really really careful (this will ultimately lead to me doing this several times). Option 2, I go to one of my several other later saves and just try to continue things from where I left off and make smarter decisions based on what I know now. These saves are so far behind of where I am currently, its not even funny but at least its something. Option 3 is to give up and completely restart with a fresh run. Yeah I can go back to any of my earlier saves but, throughout all of them I made mistakes that I now see are fixable/avoidable in one way or another. One of those mistakes being the amount of times I saved. I didn't realize how much I'd be pushing myself into a corner later by thinking I'm doing the opposite, thinking I'm saving myself so much extra time by saving over important accomplishments but, I didn't.  There was so many times I should've gone a little bit further before I saved so I wouldn't end up where I am now. The funny thing is, regardless of how much I think about it and where I ultimately choose to go from here I have to make up hours and hours of progress. Everything leads back to fighting just to get back to where I was before with varying levels of success. To an area honestly at this point I'm not even sure is the final location. Least to say, I cannot remember the last time a game has made me feel so stupid. When I look at everything I've done in this game, its my fault I ended up like this. As unfair and frustrating and for lack of better word just *mean* as this game is, I cornered myself out of fear of losing progress much earlier in the game.  Fear and hunger 2 Termina is a video game.
