The book starts off establishing that Dalinar is bad at following his clock. Now the only connection they have to the physical realm is that Dalinar and Hoids clocks are synced

Who cares about hubris or being a tyrant, I think it’s clear what character flaw this book will adress

WIND AND TRUTH MIDPOINT DEATH FLAG TIER LIST

Alright I just finished Day Five of Wind and Truth, and I'm floating my perspective out here for who may and may not die by the book's end.

S(anderson-confirmed) Tier: All future PoV characters: Sigzil, Lift, Renarin, Ash, Taln, and Jasnah

A(lmost definitely going to survive to Era 2) Tier: Shallan (I think she's pregnant now), Moash (haven't seen enough of him yet, esp. with the upgrade), Rlain (I think Sanderson would find 'bury your gays' hackish), Dalinar (The plot requires him to continue existing in some form, but we could get a rug-pull), Iyatil (also hasn't done enough), El (has barely done anything)

B(est chance is they'll survive, but idk for sure) Tier: Venli (hasn't done much, but has already gotten a whole PoV book), Gavinor (I don't buy that he'll be Odium's champion, but we'll see), Leshwi (also not very prominent, but also mechanically exposed), Other Major Spren: Pattern, Testament, Glys, Tumi, Timbre, Wyndle (if any major spren die other than Syl or Vienta, I'd be shocked)

C(ould go either way) Tier: Szeth (he's got to strike out and become independent, but he also wants to die), Navani (she's exposed herself by delving into the Spiritual Realm, and her loss would tank Urithiru's stability), Associated second-in-commands: Drehy, Colot, Fen (they're not major enough to guarantee survival, but also not major enough to have a lot of death flags), Nale (he's been prominent for a lot of the series, so there's a decent balance between his death being satisfying and shocking)

Tier: Adolin (fighting a hopeless battle, just became best friends with a young, uncertain monarch, AND has a family waiting for him!), Yanagawn (is the young, uncertain monarch who's gotten close to Adolin and the fighting), Kaladin and Syl (I'd almost prefer that only one of them dies, because a life-shattering loss for either of them would be the other), Ishar (this Herald is fucked up bruh), Vienta (written to die, Roshar is a fuck, 鬼神 kill em all 1189, I am nomad man, 410,757,864,530 Dead Fused)

been listing through WaT with partner each night and now on day 7 or 8, for the first time in this book we’re actually talking theory and stuff (which itself is a bad indicator - the first three we talked theory every night. this time it just… isn’t as intriguing.)

anyway he basically guessed the ending right off the bat lmao. spoiler cut

just straight up: “I think honors still alive, but dalinar can’t take it up. doesn’t work with his arc. Maybe taravangian ends up with both he’s got the whole dual aspect thing going.”

And then a minute or two later… “he wouldn’t even be soft locked like what’s his face from mistborn. Powers mesh too well”

Uhhhhh, so we had a lot important revelations this day, but uhhh, I am very confused.

So, around the false desolation the humans and the singers tried to make peace with the help of Ba-ado-mishram, but then Melishi, two heralds and Honor disided that they shouldn't do it. WHY? Honor was afraid that the Radiants will destroy Roshar, but how did it lead to him deciding that need to imprison Mishram? And THIS caused the recreance and not the voidbringers thing. Why doesn't the power of Honor accept Dalinar? He would do WHAT that Tanavast did?

biiiiig Wind and Truth spoiler (and a lesser mistborn trilogy spoiler) musing

I was considering the whole time I was reading what the Odium+Honor combination god would be called, like Ruin and Preservation being Harmony. I had "Justice" in my back pocket for a while as a sort of combo of Hatred and Integrity together, like when you seek to right a wrong. But it didn't quite feel right thematically, especially with Szeth's journey with his ideals being focused on who decides what is right and what is wrong (really the whole book is very focused on this conundrum). I feel like the narrative itself doesn't like the idea of Justice. Which is why I was really happy to learn the new god is Retribution. Not because I *like* retribution or whatever, but because it just seems to slot so much better into the position of Consequences Versus Revenge, if that makes sense? Justice seems to imply the consequences were Just and Right. Whereas Retribution is more neutral. Retribution is what happens when someone is wronged and they fight back in some way, regardless of the morality of the situation.

I've also been wondering what Retribution would look like if Cultivation was added in and I think the god would maybe be Restoration? or no, restoration seems too focused on restoring something broken, and not growing from the experience. maybe... Evolution? a god named evolution would be really really funny. Oh, duh, Redemption!

Stormlight Characters vs. the Ship of Theseus Paradox

[This post contains jokes that are WAT Spoilers!!]

The "Ship of Theseus paradox" poses the following conundrum: If there's this ship, and gradually over time every single part of it is replaced, is the resulting vehicle still the Ship of Theseus, or is it something totally new? If Cosmere characters were posed this question, here is how they might reply!

1. Kaladin: Fighting for his life to relate it to Therapy somehow

Kaladin: W-Well, I would say that it's a good thing to gradually replace parts of you that are damaged with new parts that are not damaged. Kaladin: It's a way to get stronger, or else you won't be able to weather future storms. Kaladin: You're still you, though. The broken parts don't define you! Kaladin: [Looks hopefully at Szeth] Szeth: [With infinite weariness] Let me guess. I am the ship. Kaladin: Another win for Therapy!

2. Nale: Just kinda likes to argue

Nale: It is a different ship. None of the original material remains. Kaladin: But- Nale: If every time a board was replaced, it was used to construct another ship, and the two ships were placed side by side, would you say that they were BOTH the Ship of Theseus? Kaladin: Well- Nale: No. Because two ships cannot be one ship. That is not how counting works. Kaladin: ... Nale: I am so good at arguing. 

3. Nohadon: Oh, you know he's gonna relate it to a man's "journey"

Nohadon: Every experience we have changes us. Nohadon: Old beliefs are challenged, lost, and changed. Nohadon: In the end, if we've been deconstructed and rebuilt, are we still the same person? Nohadon: It is not for me to answer. Dalinar: ...You can answer it. We are literally posing the question to you in the hopes of receiving an answer. Nohadon: Ha ha! Nohadon: That's not how I roll. 

4. Dalinar: Takes the question personally 

Dalinar: No, it is not the same ship. And that is okay. Dalinar: It is okay if, at the end of your journey, you are a different man--I mean ship. Navani: Smooth.

5. Rlain: Takes the question personality

Rlain: We Listeners go out into the storm to change forms all the time. Rlain: We're still us.  Rlain: I don't see why it would be any different for a ship.

6. Shallan: Takes the question personally

Shallan: I think it's the same ship. Shallan: Even if you change everything about yourself to the extent that you are a different person, you are, simultaneously, still yourself. Shallan: Every new board is incorporated into the ship and becomes a part of it, even if they were once their own separate item. Veil: ...We love you too, Shallan. 

7. Renarin: Gives a conditional answer

Renarin: I mean...I think it depends on the timing? Renarin: If your ship goes down in a storm and you just build a whole new ship and give it the same name, I don't think anybody would say that's the same ship. Renarin: But if you replace a board every year or something, then I think it would be perceived as the same ship the whole time. Taravangian [suspiciously]: So you're saying that your answer depends on a future that cannot be predicted in advance? Renarin: I...guess? Taravangian: Hate that.

8. Honor: Gives the "practical" answer

Honor: At the beginning and at the end, it's still the ship of Theseus, right? Honor: Same ship. Possession is 9/10 of the law, after all. Odium: ...Sweet. Gonna hold you to that. Honor: FUCK

9. Rysn: Actually has a ship

Rysn: Of course it's the same ship?? Rysn: I get my boat repaired all the time--it's not like it ever ceases to be my ship. 

10. Jasnah: Knows where to look for the truth of things

Jasnah: There is a simple way to answer that question. Jasnah: Peer into Shadesmar at the soul of the ship. Jasnah: If it continues to think of itself as the same entity, then it is the same entity. Renarin: ...Simple? You are virtually the only human on the planet with this ability. Jasnah: I'll share my findings.

11. Wit: Takes a storyteller's view

Wit: If people call  it the Ship of Theseus & perceive it as the Ship of Theseus, that's what it is! Wit: Is it the original ship? Who cares! Wit: For once, originality is not the point.

12. Design: Takes a...mathematical (?) view

Design: The second that 50.000000001 percent of the ship has been replaced, it's different. Design: Math!

13. Moash: Is not a nice person

Moash: Don't care. Moash: Gonna take all of the old, broken parts that got thrown away and build a whole new ship out of those cast-off parts. Moash: Now *I* have the ship of Theseus. Kaladin: Just to be kind of a bastard? Moash: Just to be kind of a bastard, yeah. 

14. Navani: Takes a scientific view 

Navani: There is a theory that the matter that makes up our bodies is itself replaced constantly. Navani: Wounds close over--skin can grow. It must get replaced as it wears out.  Navani: The ship is the macro version of this. Even if bits of it get replaced, it's still the same ship. 

15. Adolin: Relates it to...recent experiences

Adolin: Here's what I think. Adolin: Let's say that you're in the army and you're trying to, I don't know, protect a dome for many days without reinforcements. Adolin: And everybody keeps dying and getting replaced by new soldiers, until you're having to bring in the elderly, the disabled, literally anybody still alive in the city just to maintain the pike wall. Adolin: It's! Still! The! Same! Army! Adolin: Same ship. Yanagawn: Are you...okay? Adolin: I might have trauma.

She's used to being the one with the most powerful ability in their family

But she did see this coming so she's not surprised

When you were still human she could see flashes of you moving water, bending fire, and shaping the air

She knew you would be amazing

She loves your ability

She could watch you work for hours

And she does

Her favorite pastime is watching you as you practice using your ability

And she knows how it feels for the Volturi to want you so bad they would be willing to do anything to get you to join their ranks

She's always on edge waiting to see if the guard tries to move against them

The Volturi will get to you over her dead body

Jasper:

He's shocked

He's only ever known mental abilities

A couple of the Volturi have the ability to manipulate the world, but it's still mostly mental

He thinks it's amazing, but he is also a little on guard

Whether he knew you as a human and you were turned, thus being a newborn, or you were another vampire who joined their little family, he's watching you closely

He wants to make sure that everyone he loves is safe, and since you have such a strong ability, he's on edge

But after that he is entranced

He loves watching you work

But he also understands if you just want to be left alone

And he doesn't like the Volturi anyway

So if they even ask if you would like to join them, he is on their asses

Rosalie:

I feel like she's always had a little bit of a complex that she doesn't have an ability but Edward does

So she's a little self conscious when the human that she fell in love with and turned ended up having an even stronger ability than anyone could have predicted

Cue the feelings of jealousy and inferiority

It takes her a little bit to get over it

But when she does, she loves your ability

It's very useful

She knows that she'll need to touch a human's hand but doesn't want them to get suspicious because she's too cold?

Well you're here and you can just sort of make fire so it's a perfect scenario

She needs to leave right now but her curling iron is too hot to just leave there?

And she's not afraid to kick some Volturi ass so don't even worry

He loves it

He's so used to being the scary dog, now it's your turn

And he has plenty of suggestions for what to do

But don't even get me started on the Volturi

He legitimately hates them

Like he can't stand them

So if their old asses ever show up at their house to try and get to you they won't even be able to step inside

She's amazed

She's seen so many amazing things since she joined Carlisle, but this definitely takes the cake

She just can't even fathom how you're so powerful and talented

She loves to watch you

And help you out from time to time

Even if she doesn't know what it's like to have an ability

She will do her best to educate you about the Volturi

She doesn't ever want you to leave or to join them, but if that's something that you want to do, then she won't stop you

She'll be very upset and sad, but she would let you go

She just does her best to tell you everything that she knows about them and that she has experienced in the past

Just wants you to make an informed decision

And hopefully not leave her

Carlisle:

He's met many powerful people over the course of his life

Of course, he's met Benjamin too, who has the same ability as you to control the elements

But that doesn't mean he's any less astonished

He always thought that Benjamin was a one in a million chance

So he is very interested to know how you managed to get the same ability as him

He's very helpful when learning how to control your ability

Even though he doesn't have one himself, he has raised three vampires who do (not including Jasper)

Like Esme, he prefers to tell you everything that he knows about the Volturi in the hopes that you'll make your own informed decision

He doesn't want you to join them

But he won't force you to stay with him

That's not his style

But if you express that you don't want to join them but they still try to get you to, he won't hesitate to fight

Vampire! Bella:

All she can say is wow

She's a little butthurt

I mean, she wasn't very happy that her only ability is "to have an incredibly thick skull"

But she is happy for you

She just wishes she was also cool

She loves to watch you work and practice

And she's very helpful with teaching you how to control your ability
