On this day twenty six years ago Ozzfest ‘98 kicked off its North America leg of its tour with the first of two shows in Holmdel, NJ. The lineup included Megadeth, Tool, Limp Bizkit and of course Ozzy on the main stage. Motörhead, System Of A Down, the Melvins and others played the second stage. The North America tour covered only eighteen shows.

When i was younger i had a brief hyperfixation on radiation and nuclear war movies made during the 80's cold war times but it was brief because after like a week of it i got so viscerally depressed that i had to make myself stop engaging with it and i also have a deep fear of radiation poisoning tho i wouldnt pinpoint the start of it to THAT moment i'd always been scared of it but yeah. But anyways my response to it now at the moment is to learn about nuclear power and learn all the ways it is done safely and the benefits it can provide :-) this doesnt stop the fear of radiation posioning and worse case scenarios obviously but i still like to learn about stuff because if you don't know about it its easy to jump to the worst conclusions to fear about it. Radiation in general is very feared by the populace so i wanna know about it so i dont be afraid of common misconceptions i might take as fact. Also energy is very cool to me i have considered working in the field before whether its wind or solar or electrical pylons hehe

also, Hollywood and The Simpsons lie to you about what used nuclear power-plant fuel looks like:

it's an easily contained solid, not a barrel of glowing green goo, and advanced reactors (like those used in France and those potentially coming to the USA if we stop fighting nuclear power) can re-use the solid-rod waste into more fuel to continue powering society

the real problem here isn't the threat of nuclear terrorism or (fake) leaking barrels, it's that we use so much power, and that power needs to come from somewhere. getting it from coal that pollutes infinitely worse than nuclear isn't the answer, and just turning off all electrical devices and industry to reduce demand isn't feasible

until we get real, sustainable fusion power (always a decade away! but coming soon this time, we promise...), we need to continue expanding solar, wind, wave, geothermal, and other renewable sources. and continue updating fission nuclear to re-use waste. making all of this stuff requires a lot of power, btw

in the mean time, unless we can get civilization to stop using electricity, nuclear power is a perfectly safe source... as long as we have safeguards against human error and awfulness, and don't build bad designs in areas prone to environmental catastrophe
