You came fully prepared with delicious food, snacks, refreshing drinks, a blanket to keep you warm in the evening and books.

This man likes to show off on his first date, so of course he would spoil you and spend his money on you.

He would take you to an elegant restaurant with a modern architecture.

Would probably reserve the whole restaurant for both of you so you can enjoy your intimate time together without people being loud around you.

Your table would be adorned with red rose petals and scented candles that helps both of you relax.

The candles soft glow adds to the romantic touch.

The soft live music in the background adds to the experience making it unforgettable.

You know you truly love your characters when you create tons of art for them. 👀

But as an artist, of course, I never share the lore surrounding these characters AKBDKSNDNS

My inspiration for these two is basically a reimagining of a movie that no one liked. Yes, I’m talking about Wish.

The idea of a Star Boy and a romance captivated me more than the final product, as it did with many others. Wish is generally a disappointing movie but with a beautiful concept.

So, like many, I wanted to redesign the Star Boy. I tend to create character designs inspired by Pixar, with more striking and fantastical elements, so what emerged from the original concept was this charming little character whom we'll call Star.

The Star in my "reimagining" has a strong resemblance to Peter Pan in terms of personality; he's a bit stubborn and proud, embodying a kind of hero.

While going through the character creation process, I thought, "Wow! I love this design; it’s a shame it’s for a Wish redesign."

So, I decided to start from scratch.

Then, I introduced a second character named Stella, who would be the antagonist, as Star is the protagonist.

She has a simpler design because I wanted to focus more on the concept of the stars’ glow, making her body consist of pure light. (Also, Star is already difficult to animate lol )

Anyway! You may notice that she is incomplete in some way, I hope that makes sense..

As for the story, it’s essentially Star’s journey, a hero who was discharged from his duties, and in his search for something to do, he encounters Stella, a lonely star in the middle of the galaxy.

The two clearly fall in love as the story progresses, but I’ve never been a big fan of stories where the plot revolves solely around a couple. I want both characters to have deep psychological backgrounds.

"What is it that you wish for?"

For what I have planned for them, I've been compiling a playlist with various songs that help tell their stories.

One of these songs is the only one I consider redeemable from Wish, "At All at Costs", which greatly inspired the kind of love they would develop throughout the story.

“I don't want a lot for Christmas…”

Seungmin froze on the couch, the speakers in the living room of your shared apartment suddenly coming to life with the sound of Mariah Carey - his head snapping up when you slipped your way in through the hallway wearing a Santa hat and using your phone as a fake microphone.

“Bub,” he laughed incredulously, eyes sparkling with amusement, “it’s December 1st, you can’t be serious right now.”

Ignoring him with a bright smile, you sang the words as if your life depended on it in the most dramatic way possible until you got to the infamous line;

“All I want for Christmas... is... you!”

You pointed at him before bursting into an overexcited dance, no doubt making a fool of yourself as you shuffled over to your grinning boyfriend, “Come on, Minnie, I know you know the words!”

“You’re not dragging me into this!”

“Yes I am!” Wrapping your hand around his wrist, you tugged him up from the couch - though, it wasn’t that much of a hassle as he pushed himself up half of the way. “You know you want to, you can’t play coy with me, baby.”

He rolled his eyes, though whatever annoyance he tried showing was nowhere to be found as the first chorus hit, luring you both into a duet filled with over exaggerated dance moves from you, and nearly perfect vocals from him - ruined only by his laughter at your antics.

The following weekend was filled with your full Christmas playlist as you and Seungmin dutifully unpacked the decorations for your Christmas theme for this year; purple and gold, with small silver snowflakes as accents.

“Bubs, have you seen the bag with the snowflake ornaments inside?” You mused, elbow deep in a container of gold bulbs while Let it Snow by Boyz II Men played in the background.

Seungmin huffed a breath, trying to blow his bangs out of his face as he unraveled a strip of sheer gold ribbon, “I think I left it in the kitchen.”

“The kitchen?”

“Yeah, cause I needed the scissors so I just took the whole bag with me-” He cut his sentence short to mimic a riff from the song, singing the ad libs as if it were his second nature and making you laugh in the process.

“Alright, alright,” pushing yourself up from the floor, you dusted your hands off on your pajama pants, “I’ll go get them, you start putting the purple ornaments on.”

His only confirmation toward you was a hearty nod as he kept singing, completely entranced by the velvety vocals playing through the speakers while you went to retrieve the missing decorations.

By the time you made your way back to the partially decorated tree, a new song faded its way onto the shuffle; Ariana Grande’s light tone floating through the air as Santa Tell Me began playing.

“Santa tell me, if you’re really there - don’t make me fall in love again if he won’t be here next year.”

Rocking to the beat, you easily melted into decorating mode as you began putting the snowflakes in strategically random spots, breaking your focus only to sing parts of the song to a delightfully amused Seungmin as he hung his portions of the ornaments.

Through the passing of This Christmas, and Christmas EveL - a song that nearly made you drop the personal ornament in your hand in order to have a spontaneous dance battle, which your boyfriend humbly bowed out of - the green tree was fully decorated in purple, gold, and silver ornaments, curly gold ribbon, and personal ornaments sprinkled in here and there; topped off with a simple gold star to complete the look.

Seungmin hummed happily, stepping back to get a full look of the unlit tree, “It looks great, but I think it’s missing something…”

You frowned, tilting your head to the side as if getting a second angle to try to see what he’s getting at, “Do you? I think we used all the ornaments - you think we need more ribbon?”

“I think so, yeah - can you plug the tree in while I grab the scissors? I wanna see it in better lighting first.”

“Mm, sure!”

Kneeling on the floor, you reached around for the plug before plugging it into the socket; warm lights illuminating the tree in an instant and basking you in a warm glow before you crawled back to stand once more.

By the time you made it back to your feet, a new song was now playing through the speakers; Mistletoe by Justin Bieber, a not-so-secret favorite of your boyfriend’s that quickly grew on you as well.

“Does it look any different, Minnie?”

“I dunno.”

Scoffing out a laugh, you turned around to face him, “What do you mean you don’t-” 

Your words escaped you as you stared at him, a smug smile on his lips despite the faint blush turning his ears pink; your eyes trailing up his right arm held high above you both and landing on a certain plant pinched between his fingers.

Mistletoe.

“I should be playing in the winter snow, but I’ma be under the mistletoe.” He sang softly, smugness melting away to a bashful smile that had your heart growing three sizes.

A breathless laugh floated through you before you stepped forward to close the small gap; placing your hands on his cheeks and pulling him down for a soft, sweet kiss that he happily reciprocated.

Pulling away just enough to brush your nose against his, you hummed lightly, “I love you, Seungmin.”

“I love you too, bub.”

who's your favorite criminal clownery character to draw? favorite to write/think about? favorite dynamic? and can i get a fun fact or something you havent shared yet about them :]

my favs to draw are pirplexa and shirley for some reason. pirplexa because she's like a weird son to me (i'm very attached to her! shes like my favorite oc ever! i went off when i designed her!) + shirley because ever since i changed her hair style shes been a lot easier+more fun to draw. i think also carni i love drawing her w different hair styles and clothing.

my favorites to write for are pirplexa/carni/prince. that makes sense cuz theyre like. the Main protagonists+villain, but its really fun to explore their different personalities/backstories. Dude writing backstories especially for pirplexa and prince is so fun for me. also recently writing xio has been really fun n interesting to me. in general i think its fun to explore Why A Character is like That, why do they behave like that!

i got a lot of dynamics i like exploring but my favs are carni/pirplexa, carni/trill, prince/shirley, prince/xio and babs/miles. for carni dynamics its fun because she's one of the more happy/chipper characters, contrasted with pirplexa being more cold/untrusting and trill being more calm and collected. i plan for carni and trill to really dislike eachother at first, but eventually start to understand and fall for eachother <3 while with carni and pirplexa its more about pirplexa learning to trust and make friends again.

prince and shirley are siblings with extremely different world views and thought processes, they really dislike eachother. they grew up in the same enviroment yet reacted to it completely differently.

prince and xio is fun to me, ive been trying to give xio more of involved in the story+cast&crew while prince just thinks of her as his cute secretary. he sucks real bad! she doesnt like him she barely tolerates the others but he pays her to kill people so shes like whatever i can deal with this. and then she finds out he wants a consensual workplace relationship and shes like YAY HOW CAN I MANIPULATE THIS MAN!!!!!!!!!!!

babs/miles are dating at the beginning of cc, but their relationship gets a bit complicated due to babs being a little crazy about him and miles struggling with his sense of masculinity, its really not a relationship thats meant to last for long, its a bit tragic. (also why they are in love by david byrne is in both of their playlists LOL)

a few fun facts:

i dont think ive shared here is that prince and shirleys parents were movie stars! they met on the set of a film and had multiple movies with eachother. prince and shirley both had an odd childhood under a lot of surveillance from the public, plus their parents weren't very great parents. they both react to their trauma very differently, prince being "grateful" for it, giving him media training and feeling like his parents crafted him (even when he knows his parents didn't have much faith in him and bet a lot on shirley), while shirley absolutely despises the rest of her family. of course she'll go to the annual family dinner with prince, but that doesnt mean that she won't loathe every second of it.

pirplexa is a dog person! he loves dogs! he doesn't own one because he doesnt think hes in the right headspace to have one yet, but he will pet every random dog on the street. i like to think a few years after the events of cc when he's mentally better, he does adopt a dog.

miles and shirley don't get along very well, shirleys kinda like a bully older sister, she puts him in headlocks and stuff.

shirley likes to write, babs likes to sing, miles likes to draw and design.

trill originally got a degree in botany, but realized she wanted to pursue comedy/acting instead. she can still correctly identify plants!!! yay!!!

Synopsis.Your relationship with Jeno has been nothing out of the ordinary, except for the fact that you can't kiss him. You've always been told, that one day you'll find somebody who you'll love. This person that you'll love will die at the cost of a kiss from you. Jeno's not scared and prompts you to kiss him. He tells you he has a heart of fire and will never die. You take him up on his word and for the first time since you've been in a relationship with him, you kiss him.

The movie ends with the main couple embracing each other with a satisfactory kiss. You can see some tongue being added and you hesitantly breathe in when you feel your boyfriend’s hand joining and merging with yours. “Let’s go,”

You nod your head, and before the credits roll up you and Jeno are already outside the movie theater. Upon getting out of the mall, you see the sky in its pitch black form, only being lit by the stars as well as the stores lighting. Jeno buys a smoothie for the both of you and asks for a little more of your time so that he can speak with you.

Walking hand in hand with your boyfriend, your heart is beating fast and you’re afraid to look at up to him as you both walk towards the empty park bench. Taking a seat and setting the drinks on the table, you drink silently not watching him.

After the movie you both watched, Kissing Booth For Us, you knew the type of talk that would come.

You and Jeno have been dating for more than 3 years, next month it’ll be 4 years. You were the perfect couple in the whole of your campus years. Even after graduating, anyone who knew you, knew that you changed the ‘bad boy’ rider into a respectable man. While Jeno was still a rider at heart and would occasionally ride his bike with his motorcycle crew aka his friends, he sacrificed a lot of himself to be with you. Of course being together for more than 3 years had it’s fair shares of ups and down, but nothing could break you apart from him. While you were a decent girl from a wealthy well-groomed family, and he was from the dark side of town and wasn’t brought up with all his needs being met, nobody thought that you'd make it this far. But despite that, you made it work.

Nothing could break you from him. Not his doubting friends, not your doubting friends, not your mother and certainly not that damned curse.

You’ve never considered yourself to be cursed, however legend has it that your family bloodline and tree is cursed. You’ve always heard the story from your grandmother, your mother and even your older sister. The story of how kissing the love of your life will lead to his death and ultimate dismay.

It’s why your family had a history with all the men who were married to any women of your clan tragically passing away in the most pain-fullest of death. Your mother and even grand mother told you that all the women in the family were born by chance. It’s crazy to think that your parents had intercourse without kissing at all. Not even one bit and not even on the cheek or hand. And when they did, instantly your fathers would die. The story had been passed down for generations and generations, and you’ve witnessed it for yourself from how after you were born your mother and father kissed just once – and the next day he passed away. You saw his spirit dead with your own eyes.

Not wanting to take that risk, not wanting to take that chance, you told yourself that you’d never fall in love. But that was all before you met Jeno.

You never thought, that you’d fall for him because of who he was. A bad boy who hardly attend his classes. Who knew that years later you’d both be engaging in dates and activities together?

“My friends keep thinking you’re cheating on me,” He starts off with a cockily smile. “With Mark,”

You grunt and shake your head in distaste. “Mark is like a cousin to me, our family's are close,” Merely because it’s the same in his case. If he kisses the woman he loves, she dies. And because of that, your families were bonded together. “Is this all because I’m not comfortable kissing you?”

“I can’t lie babe, but it’s crossed my mind one too many times.” Jeno sips on his drink. “We’ve been together for so long, and I’ve…practically sold my soul away to have this love with you, and even though you have your reasons that I’ll die and whatever, it’s starting to sound a bit suspicious,”

“Jeno-”

“Look,” He licks his lips while looking at you. “It’s not like I don’t believe you, I do… or at least I think I do, I’ve tried to because you always look scared when you talk about this, but come on Y/n. It’s been more than 3 years, I’ve given my whole life to you. I’ve…committed myself to you and I don’t believe in these fucking curses,”

"But baby, do you really want to kiss me?" Even the way he curses sounds too light and soft. "It's a kiss of death."

“What if it’s just a made up story that your family has used for decades to keep...to keep you guys dignified?” He has made this argument one too many times, and even though it’s been beginning to eat you up that what if it’s fake, you don’t want to risk it.

“Jeno,” You whimper with watery eyes. “I don’t want to lose you,”

“And you won’t babe,” Jeno ensures sitting closer to you looking hurt that you’re hurt. “Nothing will ever happen to me,”

He could live without kissing you, but he couldn’t live without being with you. And he knows he can just let it go, but with the way his friends have been eating his brain out, he can’t help but be desperate. It was just a kiss, not intercourse – and it’s the fact that he’s abstained himself for 3 years only yanking and fapping himself off to the thought of you, that it makes him all the more desperate.

“I’ll never leave you, because my heart is a heart of fire. A heart full of flames of love that never dies out for you. My fire and passion for you will never die out. Which is why, I want to take this chance.” He whispers when taking a chance to slide right next to you and look over your worried face. He takes a chance when sliding his fingers through your hair holding the back of your neck. You want to kiss him, you really do. “And what if everyone else around us is right? That we’re from two different worlds? What if…I’m not even the love of your life?” He states in whisper, giving you a light smile to allow you to trust him.

You’re hesitant when his face draws near to you and you feel his warmth. Your face gets hot and your breath begins to shake. He’s gentle when laying a hand against your neck. “It’ll be alright,”

“You sure?” You whisper out.

“Positive,"

And just like that, Jeno’s fluffy lips meet yours in a kiss you couldn’t have imagined before, it feels like you’re drowning in it every single time his lips meet yours. Drowning in a good way. Like your soul is floating in the water of this love that you both have – and this kiss is setting your heart ablaze, it’s setting your soul on fire and nothing can stop it from being real.

And everything feels alright, even when you let out a little whimper which comes out in a moan form. His hands cup the sides of your neck and pulls you close to him before deepening the kiss as if it was something you’ve been doing your whole life.

It feels so natural that you can’t help but melt into his touch with your eyes closed but still feeling the tithe of tears overcoming in you.

The moment is intoxicating. He pulls away slowly almost reluctantly, but not too soon and kisses the tip of your nose before pulling back completely to watch your earthly beautiful face. He watches you in both amusement and adoration. “How was it?” He whispers.

With your eyes still closed, “Please, kiss me again Jeno,” You can’t handle how much you need him that you dive into his lips holding gently onto his gorgeous face. Your boyfriend is finally kissing you, you are finally kissing your boyfriend. He’s not dying and that curse all seemed to be a legend and legacy away. How could you believe whole heartedly that a kiss would kill the love of your life? How could you believe that Jeno would die from just a kiss? With the way it feels so good to physically kiss your boyfriend like this, you never ever want to let him go. Never.

He kisses you slowly at first, savoring every second of this. Finally, after 3 years of being together, you’re finally allowing yourself to open up to him to give you a kiss. You want nothing more than for it to never end. The kiss is sweet and tender all in its own way and then suddenly there’s teeth nipping at your lower lip – just like in the movie!

You pull away briefly just to smile at him as he smirks at you before diving back into another kiss.

You’ve always heard plenty about how good kissing is from your friends, but you never imagined you would experience it in real life. You think it might be better than those cheesy romcom movies because this kiss that you’re having with Jeno is not just some random kiss in a movie scene with an actor who’s acting- but it’s with you and your boyfriend of 3 years.

He tastes sweet and you have a sudden urge to kiss him some more until you’re both breathless.

Jeno doesn’t rush you or push you into anything more than just lip biting and inserting his tongue in your mouth, he allows you to relieve your inner desires on him – of always wanting to kiss him. He can see (just by how much you held onto him and kissed him) that this was seriously a big deal to you.

You really believed that he’d die.

“Perhaps I’m not your true love,”

He joked, and you shaked your head. “Stop it. I love you more than you’ll ever know. And I’m happy that you’re still here, that it was just a myth, a legend. I can almost say that I broke the curse with you,” You were happy that nothing bad happened to him, and you couldn’t wait to kiss him again and again for the rest of your days. He took you home on his motorcycle before and gave you another kiss goodbye. When you locked your door, you refrained from telling your mother or even calling your best friend.

You simply laid in bed with the biggest smile on your face.

Meanwhile as Jeno’s driving back home on his motorcycle, something unusual passes through his body.

He struggles to sit properly on his seat before blinking rapidly and almost painfully. His whole body gets tense and as common as it is for him to feel pain while riding his bike, he drives a few more streets before seeing the usual abandoned warehouse, where he and his friends have made into their mock up trial course. Shifting his gear and directing his handles towards the warehouse- he’s suddenly surged and gripped by an unknown force.

Jeno gets thrown off his motorcycle into the empty dimly lit motorcycle warehouse. He crashes onto the ground sliding past the wet floor. If it weren’t for his leather jacket he would’ve gotten road rash. Nonetheless, his whole body is intense as he struggles to stand trying to overcome the inner bearing heat that swarms all over his body. It’s hot, but it’s not the temperature or air of the warehouse that has him sweating, it’s his own body that gropes him in an intense amount of heat.

Seething through his clenched teeth Jeno can’t even see through his vision. Jeno furrows his brows in confusion as he attempts to blink, only to be met with a burning sensation. Smoke billows out from his eyes, enveloping his surroundings in a hazy cloudy view. The pain intensifies with each passing moment, leaving him desperate for relief as his eyelids fight to stay open. It’s bad enough that he feels himself burning up, but seeing the mist of smoke oozing off his body has his jaws trembling and throbbing. Grunting and fidgeting in agitation, Jeno can’t find the means to open up his eyes anymore as smoke blurs his vision entirely.

He can see the smoke literally warping out of his eyes. Struggling to get up, he manages to get onto his feet with wobbly and rigid legs. He forces his whole tight body to move forward. However, his legs strictly stiffen and unbending almost looking like he’s using all his might to trudge forward.

As Jeno continues to struggle forward, his body, slowly becomes consumed by the scorching antagonizing flames. The intense heat radiating from him intensifies, causing his skin to blister and crack, revealing the glowing embers beneath. With each step, he leaves a trail of scorch marks on the floor, his once sturdy frame now weakening and disintegrating. As the fire engulfs him, Jeno's agonizing cries merge with the crackling flames.

“God!” His body contorts leaving him falling forward on his knees with his hands out as he yells out. It starts with his hands contorting and transforming into a mere skeletal structure. The raging fire consumes his flesh and he watches as his skin dries out in ash and fades away. “No!”

With the last vestiges of humanity slipping away, Jeno in agony can only bear his soul out in pain as his skin deteriorates away leaving nothing but charred bones.

The pain finally stops.

But Jeno is in trauma of his new found skeleton hands shaking with flames fuming out. He can’t breathe. He can’t move. His skeletal form kneels amidst the blaze of flames. The fire dances around him, casting eerie shadows on the surrounding walls. The once-vibrant warehouse is now a chamber of torment, filled with the intense heat and the haunting sounds of crackling flames.

But even as his physical form diminishes, there is something undying within Jeno. A flicker of determination amidst the devastation. As his skeletal fingers reach out, he discovers an inner strength, a newfound power emanating from his very core.

With a surge of will, Jeno commands the flames to bend to his whim. The inferno responds, twisting and swirling around him in a display of unearthly power. The intense heat transforms into an aura of energy, crackling with an otherworldly intensity.

Jeno, now a being of fire and bone, steps forward, his glowing sockets fixed on the exit of the warehouse. The flames part before him, creating a path through the scorching heat. He strides forward, his skeletal frame radiating a sense of both dread and awe.

He can’t believe it.

Inside the warehouse, Renjun, one of Jeno’s closest friends peeks his head from behind one of the large metallic boxes containing the electricity. He gazes in disbelief at what he’s just witnessed the spectacle unfolding before him. Jeno, transformed into a living embodiment of fire and bones. The air around him shimmers with heat, and his presence commands both fear and reverence.

And right before Renjun’s eyes, he watches as his friends clothes begin burning in ashes and withering away, and ultimately revealing more of the bone frame structure that was once flesh and meat of Jeno’s body. The bones through the fire grow brittle and crack, and slowly they crumble and Renjun has wide eyes watching his friend break bone for bone down to the ground.

There’s nothing but a pile of bones on the ground with a skeleton head in the center as the fire burns all around the space.

Morning comes, and its Sunday. You’re sitting outside of your house with your ‘cousin’ friend, Mark, both sipping on some tea and reading a shared book. You stop reading to speak to Mark.

“I kissed Jeno yesterday.” You moderately state out. “And he didn’t die.”

The silence is deafening and you don’t look at Mark, you simply allow for the silence to continue until he’ll speak. And thankfully he does. “Well, he couldn’t have died because he was never the love of your life. Which goes onto me saying, you’re wasting your time with him, you should be focusing on your business and growing your enterprise so that you may meet ‘the one’ and begin a legacy with him.”

“A legacy of what? My children growing up without their father?”

“No, a legacy of beauty as well as old money reigning in our types of family.” Mark sets his book down to look at you. “For years, our families have had the best genes and all the wealth and success because our forefathers and mothers sacrificed and gave up their fleshly desires and cravings, so that we can have it all. For me, love is a waste, I simply want to build an empire and generation to carry out our legacy.”

“Till today, no matter how many times I hear that story, it sounds absurd every time,”

“What’s absurd is your relationship with that low life. What do you even see in him? You’re both from different worlds? He’s the darkness and you’re the light. You need to be more smart Y/n. You put us all to shame with him being in our family line.”

"So what if our world's are different? What if he's on the far end of the spectrum? What if he's darkness and I'm his light leading him to his light? Who cares about what he does? You and mum always find something to be negative about. He's tried being better of himself, but you can't see it."

"It's not that we can't see it, it's just pointless." Mark mutters.

"Even when one problem is fixed, you scurry on to look for another one? Why can't I just be happy that despite his world, which is filled with darkness, actually gives me a chance to escape from reality? To escape just for a moment. Why can't I have him? Why can't I be with him?"

Mark's eyes say it all. He's looking at you with pity, trying to understand your mind. Despite not saying anything his whole posture, facial structure, judgmental aura sips out of him. So even when he opens his lips, you're already expecting the counter back. "It's the fact that you, a well refined and sophisticated scholar, can see him, a delinquent at best, you can't even see him for who he is, and you still chose to be with him. Even despite the curse, you still want to be with him. I rest my case at this point. Do what you want. I'm not going to speak or stop you." He digresses, shifting his glasses back on his face as he turns the page of his Lumière dans le monde manuscript. You sigh.

It's not because of his reaction, bit it's because of his lack of reaction. Not only did he indirectly jab at your intelligence, but he makes it almost impossible for you to introduce Jeno to your family formally.

After standing your ground for Jeno, you’re not expecting that after an hour of driving to his house and then going to his bike workout warehouse area (because he was not at his house) to see him, that you see something else.

His friends; Renjun, Chenle, Doyoung, Taeyong, Jaemin and Donghyuck all standing and surrounding a pile of bones and a never ending burst of flames on the ground.

It’s when Renjun looks up to you, that you don’t even need him to say it.

Because the sight is so familiar yet unfamiliar.

You saw it with your father when you were a young girl, but back then, it was bones and dusts of sand all piled around the bed. The elements of the earth and what their hearts represented lays around them. While your dad was a kind man with a warm heart, his outer structure was dust as he represented Earth.

And when seeing the skull on the ground with its hollow eyes as the fire surrounds it, you can’t help but cup your mouth and cry out. That’s Jeno, and his spirit of fire that never dies out. He said it himself.

TW: KIDNAPPING, NON-CON TOUCHING, OBSESSIVE BEHAVIOR, THREATS ON ONES LIFE - when you think about it the Corpse Bride is a fucked up story, this Au doesn't get anywhere near the topic of sex or anything sexual, but Danny is mentioned and stated to be overly touchy with Duke when he doesn't want it

During the scuffle Danny gets hit with a boat load of experimental pollen Ivy was making. Signal just so happens to be the hero who finds him among the rumble. Also being the first person Danny lays eyes on.

When Danny & Ellie where traveling around the world, Dani makes the mistake of accidently drinking some Lazarus water. With his daughter rapidly de-aging to a six-year old, Danny runs and finds his sister. Jazz suggests getting Ellie enrolled in a night school, and for Danny to get a job gooning for a bit. It's a plus that Mr.Thomas isn't all that hard on the eyes.

Christmas Films of a Century Past

(updated!)

For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to watch somewhere 50-60 Christmas and Christmas-adjacent silent films from before 1920 to put together a playlist for you all. 

I chose these as a representative selection. My general criteria were:

Christmas should be central to the story

The plot should be novel to a modern viewer or something a modern viewer would be surprised to see so early on film 

The list on the whole should have a variety of settings and narrative structures

Some of the videos have music and some don’t, so you may want to check your volume level. 

The intertitles for some of these films are not in English, so be sure you have captions turned on for English translations.

1. Santa Claus (1898) (UK)

Directed by George Albert Smith 

Short and sweet, this film sees children put to bed by their nanny on Christmas Eve and Santa Claus coming down the chimbley to fill their dutifully hung stockings. Director G.A. Smith used his own patented technique of double exposure to show Santa’s arrival without cutting away from the children’s room. Santa Claus might not pack the punch of a Méliès trick film, but it’s a fun novelty and is purportedly the first appearance of Santa Claus on film.

2. The Little Match Seller (1902) (UK)

Directed by James Williamson 

This one’s a quick but effective adaptation of the Hans Christian Anderson tragedy featuring impressively well-coordinated superimpositions.

3. The Christmas Angel (1904) (FR)

Directed by George Méliès for Star Film Company

The Christmas Angel follows an impoverished girl driven into the city to beg on a snowy winter night. First she’s chased away from a church by more seasoned beggars; then she’s thrown out of a poultry seller and harassed by police. On the verge of falling asleep in the snow, a rag-and-bone man rouses her and offers her help. Later, the girl passes out beside a road but is luckily spotted by a wealthy couple on a car ride. When they learn of her plight, they bring her home along with food and gifts. 

Though not as fantastical as some of Méliès’ more famous works, The Christmas Angel is still highly stylized (and stylish) and features special effects that are photographed beautifully. It’s also worth noting that the version of the film included here is the American cut. The original French cut, titled Détresse et Charité (Distress and Charity), did not include the sequence with the wealthy couple and instead ends with the girl dying in the snow. 

4. The Night Before Christmas (1905) (US)

Directed by Edwin S. Porter for Edison Manufacturing Company

This is the first time the poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” was put on film. Loosely following the poem, we see Santa Claus prepare for his yearly trek while a middle-class family prepares for his visit. When Santa heads out, we are treated to an extended panning sequence with a fully painted backdrop for a mini Santa and his reindeer to glide across. When Santa arrives at the family home, he chaotically dumps presents and decorations around their living room and makes a large, decorated tree appear out of thin air. (Across many of the movies I watched to put this post together, this seems to be a favored scenario for the jolly fat man around this time—and it’s delightful.) The family then wakes to find their gifts and the film closes with Santa directly wishing us a Merry Christmas. 

5. A Little Girl Who Did Not Believe in Santa Claus (1907) (US)

Directed by J. Searle Dawley and Edwin S. Porter for Edison Manufacturing Company

Even at the risk of this list being too Edison heavy, I couldn’t leave this great short out. While walking with his mother, a rich little boy encounters a poor little girl alone in the cold. They take her home to play and warm up. When the boy learns that the girl doesn’t believe in Santa because apparently Santa doesn’t visit poor children, he hatches a scheme. On Christmas Eve, the boy holds a stake out near the fireplace and takes Santa hostage, tying him up and holding him at gunpoint. The boy then forces Santa to visit the girl—going so far as shimmying down the chimney himself to let Santa in the front door. When the girl wakes up to a beautifully decorated tree, new toys, and a full stocking, she can finally believe in Santa Claus. While I’m generally not so into stories about supposedly benevolent rich people, I do love the implications this story has on how Santa Claus works and I also find the means with which the boy gets his way hilarious.

6. Il Natale di Cretinetti / Foolshead’s Christmas (1909) (IT)

[& Come fu che l’ingordigia rovino il Natale di Cretinetti / How Greediness Spoilt Foolshead’s Christmas (1910) & Il Natale di Cretinetti (1911)]

Directed by Andre Deed for Itala Film

This entry is a three-for, which I hope you’ll excuse, but I couldn’t decide which Cretinetti Christmas to share! Cretinetti, the comedic persona of filmmaker Andre Deed, is an absolute agent of chaos. 

In the 1909 film, Cretinetti attempts to bring a tree home for a Christmas party. The destruction escalates wildly, culminating in an entire building falling to pieces. 

If you can believe it, the stakes are even higher in the 1910 film, when Cretinetti can’t resist sneaking out of bed on Christmas Eve to snack on the candy decorating the tree. When Santa sees what Cretinetti has done, he chides him and takes him back to his workshop—which is apparently in heaven. Destruction ensues. Cretinetti then proceeds to cause havoc for Saint Peter, annoying god so much that he calls the devil to come get Cretinetti. Cretinetti is then chased to hell where demons try to cook him alive. Thankfully, spoiler alert, it was all a bad dream and he wakes up on Christmas morning with a terrible stomach ache. 

The 1911 film returns to localized chaos. Cretinetti has a run-in with a mail carrier and his Christmas packages get mixed up with one of the carrier’s parcels. The parcel contains three bottles of ether which then begin to emit gasses in the middle of the family Christmas party. 

I wasn’t familiar with Cretinetti before reviewing films for this list, but I’m definitely going to seek out more of Deed’s movies. Each of these films had well-executed chaotic slapstick; over-the-top in all the right ways.

7. Making Christmas Crackers (1910) (UK)

Produced by Cricks & Martin Films for Clarke, Nickolls, & Coombs Confectionery

To start, if you’re not sure what a Christmas cracker is, it’s a colorfully decorated paper tube that makes a cracking noise as you pull it open. Inside the tube is a paper hat, a joke, and/or a small toy. It’s a traditional part of UK Christmas celebrations.

This short starts as a documentary of the workers at Clarke, Nickolls, & Coombs constructing the crackers. It’s a fun thought that as early as 1910, people were interested in watching how mass-produced consumer goods were made. It’s also fun to see these skilled workers ply their trade so deftly (even though wages and working conditions were likely less than ideal). The film ends with a family celebrating around a Christmas tree topped with a functional giant cracker.

8. A Christmas Carol (1910) (US)

Directed by J. Searle Dawley for Edison Films Manufacturing Company

There are so so so many film adaptations of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol made before 1920 that it was hard to choose which one to include on this list. In the end I chose this 1910 version for its economy of storytelling, fluid use of special effects, and for Marc McDermott’s great performance as Scrooge.

9. Broncho Billy’s Christmas Dinner (1911) (US)

Directed by Gilbert M. Anderson (Broncho Billy) for The Essanay Film Manufacturing Company

Gilbert M. Anderson was an incredibly prolific and popular filmmaker and star of early American film, particularly in his role as Broncho Billy. As was typical for Anderson, he’s pulling triple duty on Broncho Billy’s Christmas Dinner as the star, director, and producer. The film features a simple and heartwarming story. 

On Christmas, Billy comes across a young woman in peril as her horses got startled and are now pulling her cart along wildly. Billy manages to wrangle the horses and in gratitude she invites him to Christmas dinner at her parents’ home. Unfortunately, her father happens to be the sheriff. But, all is well, as it turns out that Broncho Billy’s been given a pardon and the sheriff welcomes him to the table gladly. 

The enduring appeal of outlaws or criminals getting into the Christmas spirit is fascinating to me and it’s cool to see such an early instance of the story!

10. Le Noel de la princesse / The Little Princess’s XMas Gift (1911) (FR)

In all honesty, this is the least Christmassy (but also probably most christian-y) of all the films I included here, but its style and novelty stood out. The sets, costuming, and production design are lush. It might also be one of the weirdest Christmas stories I’ve even encountered.

After Lord Othberg passes away, the conniving Otto plans to assassinate the baby prince in order to inherit the lordship himself. He poisons the baby, but the princess prays for her baby brother to come back to life as her Christmas gift. An angel appears to her and they summon Jesus, who resurrects her baby brother. Of course, they then place the revivified baby in the castle’s nativity scene, to the joy of all but Otto.

11. Ida’s Christmas (1912) (US)

Directed by Van Dyke Brooke for Vitagraph Company of America

With a more classic Christmassy story, Ida’s Christmas tells us of a family who are facing hard times. Ida (played by a very small Dolores Costello) has her eyes on a pricey doll. Meanwhile, her mother seeks out employment with a wealthy family. The matriarch of the wealthy family overhears Ida’s wish and decides to buy the doll for her as a surprise. Later, Ida is distraught to find that the doll has been purchased but comes across a wallet that someone has dropped. She considers taking the money, but chases down the owner instead. The old man gives her some reward money for returning the wallet. Ida rushes to see if she can buy the doll, but has second thoughts when she thinks about how much her family could use the money. She arrives home with the money just in time for a Santa-esque old man to show up bearing packages and an assurance that the wealthy family has work for her father. The film ends with the family celebrating an unexpectedly Merry Christmas. 

It’s a sweet story that hits so many beats of what we now consider traditional Christmas tales.

Fair warning, if you thought The Princess’s XMas Gift was odd, you might need to ready yourself for this one. Stop-motion virtuoso Władysław Starewicz (Ladislas Starevich) spins a tale about a tiny ornament of Santa/Ded Moroz coming to life on Christmas and going out into the wild to bring Christmas joy to creatures small and smaller, including a frog and a ladybug. Starewicz’s animation is as impeccable as ever and the short is imaginative and quirky.
