Friday Fic Recs
So, somehow, despite not reading much DC x DP lately I have fallen into reading one uncommon ship enough to make a rec list. Danny Fenton/Duke Thomas fans, this one's for you, have some fic recs, arranged in order of wordcount and all containing some kind of evil cult summoning gone wrong.
assigned husband at ritual by aryelee
Accidental marriage! Evil cult summoning gone wrong! This one's really cute! The screw up is genuinely fun and I love how Duke takes everything in stride once it becomes clear Danny's not evil. This entire one shot is sweet and heartfelt.
Yes, He's the King of the Infinite Realms of the Dead, But He's Also an Introvert by bongo_balderdash
In hindsight, maybe they should've asked if this mysterious boyfriend was human first. Duke dating someone and just forgetting to mention it brings me joy. I love the vibe of their relationship here, they've been dating for a while, they've long moved past any serious worries about eldritch traits or ghost king stuff. Duke also has some little shit energy going on, which I appreciate.
Wearing Such a Heavy Crown by TheWritingOwl
The Court of Owls had been targeting the Robins for a while now. This one takes on a slightly more serious tone than the other recs. I really like that both Danny and Duke seem to be in similar places emotionally here, they're both alone and feel very much like they're facing a world much bigger than they are. The quiet care they show each other is very sweet. I can really see the beginnings of a relationship between them.

MEMES!!!
I SEE ALL OF YOU & YOU ARE MAGNIFICENT - monster x monster :
Danny and Duke see each other for the first time and are absolutely mesmerized by how gorgeous the other is. They fail to realise that being around another monster has made them both more comfortable letting their glamours fall.

I’ve seen some tags for Duke X Danny.
like #deadlights, or #ghostlight
I just really like their themes so here, lemme say like 50; these can also be cool fic titles (some of these are just jokes, or might be taken by other ships)
NightLight
StarShine
if you put their hero names you get PhantomSignal which is… kinda cute
EctoSignal
ShiningSpirit
SpaceSight
Polter-Gaze (get it? Poltergeist. Gaze. It’s a pun)
GhostSightings
(this one’s just a funny joke) I See Dead People
DeadEyes
GraveGaze
SolarLights (a bit of a stretch, but people put these on graves!)
(another joke, this time phasmaphobia) SpiritOrbs
SpiritSight
SeeingStars
SpiritSignal
GhostBusters (Who you gonna call? Ghost Busters!)
SolarFlare (oh look, a space based thing that has to do with light. Cool.)

Danny as a popular ghost-hunting streamer and Tim as his (secretly smitten) tech-savvy boyfriend
Danny: Soooo, how did the new setup look on stream? 👀 Tim: Flawless. Your transitions are smoother than Nightwing on a trapeze. Danny: Thanks! …Wait, was that a compliment or shade at Dick? Tim: Yes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Danny: Dude, someone in the chat said my ghost puns are cringe. Tim: They’re right. Danny: Rude. I thought you loved me for my humor. Tim: I love you despite your humor. Big difference.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Group Chat: "BatFam + Phantom"]
Dick: Wait, Danny’s a streamer? Like… famous famous? Danny: Yeah, just hit 1M subs last week! 😎 Jason: How do you even ghost hunt on stream? Danny: I vibe with the ghosts. Sometimes literally. Tim: [uploads spreadsheet of Danny’s analytics] His audience engagement rate is 37%. Insane. Damian: You’re dating a YouTuber. Have you no dignity? Tim: Says the kid with a secret animal rescue TikTok. Damian: …
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Danny streaming with Tim in the background]
Danny: Alright chat, today we’re exploring an abandoned warehouse! Should be super haunted. Tim (off-camera): Or just structurally unsafe. Danny: …Ignore my very responsible boyfriend. We’re doing this. Chat: WE LOVE TIM!!! Danny: I thought this was my stream. 😒
Tim: I saw you fell through a floor last stream. Care to explain? Danny: Ghost-proof floors aren’t a thing, babe. Tim: And neither is common sense, apparently.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Chat watching a rare collab stream]
Danny: Okay, Tim is joining us for this stream because chat kept asking! Chat: TIMMMMM!!! 🥰🥰🥰 Danny: What the heck, I’m literally right here. Tim: [flawlessly hacks into ghost-detection software on stream] Chat: TIM IS THE BEST. 😍 Danny: I can literally fly.

Danny adopts himself
It's a common joke in Gotham that Bruce Wayne will adopt any black-haired and blue-eyed traumatized boy he finds. So much so that even he leans into it. But he was completely shocked when Damian confronts him about having a new brother that he did not want.
Bruce could barely get a word in when the rest of the family arrived upset that they weren't told about getting another sibling after Damian texted the family group chat (for once).
Damian had encountered a boy around Drake's age moving stuff into what was an empty room. The room was now furnished top to bottom with glowing green lights, tapestries of stars, random artifacts, several telescopes, and model rockets.
He knew the moment he saw the black hair and blue eyes that his father had taken in another ward.
Apparently Bruce was the last the know about his new "son" who was currently rearranging furniture and asking to help Alfred with dinner.
Said dinner was an uncomfortable as Bruce was grilled by his kids on his addiction to adoption. Simultaneously they tried to get to know the new addition to the family.
It was easy to see that Damian didn't like Danny but it was equally easy to see that Danny could cow the boy like a border collie on a lamb. When Damian thew a dagger the teen caught it with one hand as it passed his face and then slid it across the table back to Damian.
"Try again. " Danny said "And this time don't aim to miss on purpose. If you want me dead you need to do better."
Damian put the knife away and huffed.
Tim and Danny hit it off almost instantly. The way they were able to bounce their thoughts back and forth made Tim believe that he found an equal.
Danny was able to understand Cassie immediately with just look in eachothers eyes like he was reading her mind but not in a creepy way.
Jason of course noticed the strange energy in the air around the kid. It was soothing. Like lavender wafting in the air. Well lavender for everyone else for him it was like opium. His eyes felt heavy like he had eaten a handful of poppy seeds. At the same time he felt full, like he had eating a full meal after starving for a week.
Whatever it is Damian was feeling it too. The demon looked even more his age as he rubbed his eyes and yawned. The crease in his brow gone.
Duke on the other hand was more on edge as his eyes flickered towards Danny before looking away. He had something he wanted to ask about the glowing boy but since no one can see it or just isn't saying anything he will keep quiet for now.
Next was Barbara who teased the new kid.
"So how do you like your new family? Ready to be the new robin?" She asked.
"Im robin." Damian mumbled groggily.
The others were waiting for Damian to finally fall asleep and glared at one another in a challenge to be the one to pick up Damian and put him to bed. Dick was winning.
Speaking of Dick, as expected he was off the wall excited to learn more about his new little brother. He wanted the full story as to why Bruce took him in. He could almost certainly guess it was because of a tragic situation and Dick was already ready to handle it as the greatest big brother ever and he wasn't sharing the title no matter what Barbara said. Even if she was Stephanie's favorite.
Bruce cleared his throat and the table went silent. "So, Danny. Where exactly did you come from? Why are you here? And how did you know who I am?"
Everyone went white. Did they all just risk their identities believing that Danny was a new Robin? Why didn't Bruce say something? Not even a signal for the protocol they would use.
Danny frowned looking a bit hurt.
"What do you mean, Bruce? You said you owed me. You said you'd give me anything I wanted if saved your son. I even helped you get back home when you got lost in time." Danny huffed feeling betrayed.
The table went silent.
Bruce made a few calculations in his brain before something must have come to mind. "I lost my memory for a bit so I need a bit of proof."
Danny placed a batarang on the table. The batarang had an engraving on it in a code that only Bruce knew.
"You told me to show this to Alfred when I came. We had a deal, Bruce. You promised me whatever I wanted." Danny huffed clearly insulted.
Just like Danny had said the code was the one Bruce had made. However this code wasn't a promise to grant a favor but to welcome someone new to the family. Past Bruce must have had plans to take the boy in but told Danny something else to lure him here.
Bruce recognized that everyone was right and he has a problem now that he's looking at it like this.

DC x DP Prompt: Bruce is bad at emoting but at least ghosts are empathic (too bad bat kids are not)
Was reading Twincognito on AO3 when I stumbled across this gem again:
~
" “Danny, Tim. I was just…checking in. Is everything alright?” Curse his inability to make meaningful conversation when it wasn’t a life or death situation.
They glanced at each other and shrugged.
Then Danny hauled himself out of the bed and walked over to Bruce.
Bruce tried not to let too much excitement show on his face. "
~
Now I really want to read a story where Bruce adopts Danny post Meta trafficking and is being his usual emotionally constipated self. His kids keep getting mad at him because he's treating their new meta brother who was trafficked poorly (generally being stilted in conversation with him, walking away hurriedly mid-conversation, avoiding Danny when he's feeling really awkward, etc). They think Bruce is discriminating against Danny for being a civilian, meta, dealer's pick, but really it's just Bruce being horribly socially awkward. Danny knows this because of ghost empathy and find the whole thing hilarious. The whole thing comes to a head with the Bat Kids staging an intervention in the Bat Cave.

GhostLights
Please continue ghostlights multiverse constant au with Earth 0 having a happy ending together cuz halfa Danny is impossible to really kill anymore pleaseeeeeee 😭
(part one)
Danny is destined to die once he meets Duke. He knows this; he’s seen how their friendship leads to Danny’s death is so many different lives. There’s no doubt in his mind that the only way to ensure Danny lives a long life is to stay away from him.
Which is why the universe decides to make Danny pop up constantly. It’s clearly trying to get him killed, and Duke refuses to let that happen!
It starts innocently enough. They cross paths briefly at a bus stop, bumping into each other as Duke gets off the bus and Danny moves to go on it. He recognizes Danny immediately, feels a little spark go through him when their shoulders brush against each other. Something in him says I know you. I miss you.
He pulls back a step and offers a quick apology. Danny waves it off and looks at him as through searching for something. He opens his mouth to say something, but Duke can feel the threads of fate tighten around their throats and hurries away.
He waits until he hears the bus pull away, then glances behind him to watch it go before he slows down to a normal walking pace and heads for the mall where he planned to meet his friends.
Duke’s heart pounds in his chest. He can’t get Danny’s eyes out of his head; so painfully blue, so nostalgic, so doomed.
This is for the best, he reminds himself. This is so Danny can live. That’s all that matters.
The moment’s passed, anyways. They’re still strangers, and they’ll stay that way.
He takes another minute to collect himself, then plasters on a smile and heads into the mall to find his friends.
The next six times, Duke has to save Danny as the Signal, appearing just in time to stop a mugging, an armed store robbery, a car trying to run Danny over, and fighting off Man-Bat who, for some reason, took one look at Danny and went fuck this guy, actually.
Duke is stressed. He’s Stressed™ and if anyone tries to take out Danny again he’s just going to start screaming.
For whatever reason, the universe is just out to get Danny now that they’ve run into each other once. Duke’s life is a cosmic joke, and he’s stuck in the center of it all waiting for the moment comedy turns into tragedy.
It’s gotten to the point that Duke expects to find Danny in some sort of dangerous situation as soon as he starts patrol. He’s starting to dread going out, but he needs to; Gotham needs the Signal to keep the streets safe during the day, and Danny needs Duke to save his incredibly unlucky ass nearly every single day.
The first two hours go fine. He stops an armed robbery and a car jacking, chases away some creeps from the working girls, and gets a blueberry muffin from the bakery that’s been around forever, on account of the old woman running it thinking he’s a good lad who needs to eat more.
Duke begins to hope that he’ll have a quiet patrol. He begins to hope that Danny is safe and not in mortal danger for once.
His hopes are immediately dashed when he spots Danny on a rooftop, standing way too close to the edge.
Heart in his throat, Duke crosses the space between them in an instant, slingshotting himself forward through shadows.
He intends to pull Danny back, to say something, to try and shake some common sense into him so he actually has a chance at living a long life. Duke doesn’t get to do any of that; as soon as he steps out of the shadows, Danny turns to face him with a tired smile.
“There you are,” he says. “I knew you’d find me.”
“What? I—listen, can you step back from the ledge for me?”
Danny steps back, keeping his eyes on Duke. He doesn’t seem to mind that the Signal is so hesitant in this moment, keeping his distance.
“I wasn’t sure at first,” he says, as if he never stopped talking, “But I had a feeling. You’ve probably had it too, right? It’s why we keep being pushed together, and why my luck has been so awful ever since I came to Gotham.”
He knows, is the first thing Duke things. But how can that be? If Danny knows about all those other universes where they had each other, then he knows how it ends. If he knows, then he should be trying to keep his distance from both Duke and the Signal before he gets killed.
“It’s you under that mask, isn’t it? Duke.”
The way Danny says his name brings him back to all those other lives where they had each other from the start. He sounds so sure of himself, as if he’s always known Duke.
It’s only when Duke says, “How?” that Danny falters, fear briefly crossing his expression before it settles into something more neutral. His fingers begin to pull at the cuffs of his jacket sleeves, confidence melting away.
“Do you… not know me?”
The quietness of his voice, the fragility of it, breaks Duke’s heart. He doesn’t stop to think before he answers, “I know you. Of course I know you, Danny.” Then he blinks, shakes his head, and says, “Wait. No. I know of you. We haven’t really met this life.”
“It’s the dreams, right? They make things so confusing.”
“You’ve been getting them too?”
“I may be the cause of them,” Danny says with a wince. “Due to some, uh… ghostly magic shenanigans. It wasn’t on purpose! But it is kinda my fault.”
Ghostly magic? Okay, sure, why not. Who is Duke to judge the bizarre things that exist in their world. He has superpowers and his biological father is an evil immortal. He has absolutely no leg to stand on when it cames to the weird and the unexpected. Might as well roll with it, since this is his life now.
Besides, there’s more important things to focus on, such as: “Okay, so, just to be on the same page, you’ve been getting the same dreams as me, yeah? The ones where you always die? Those dreams?”
And Danny, very casually, answers, “Yeah.”
“Dude,” Duke says, pained, “If you know that meeting me leads to your death, then why are you seeking me out?!”
“What?”
“Have you not seen how you die young in every single universe? Because I have! And it’s messing me up!”
Danny blinks at him, then looks guilty, hunching in on himself. “Oh, yeah. That. Uh, yeah, so…” he trails off and bites his lip, gaze kept downwards so he doesn’t have to meet Duke’s eyes. “I do die young always, yeah, but it’s totally not your fault! I just do that!”
“You just do that,” Duke repeats, pained.
“Yeah. I just die young.”
“Is this somehow not a problem for you.”
To his immense displeasure, Danny has the nerve to shrug and say, “Eh, not really.”
“Danny.”
“It’s okay! Really!” Danny says, a little frantically, “And also it has nothing to do with you! None of my deaths have been your fault, it’s just a thing that happens to me!” And then, in a quiet, rushed mumble, “Also I already died in this universe so it’s fine.”
A strangled sound bursts out of Duke’s throat as he tries very hard not to start yelling. He puts his head in his hands and holds back a heavy sigh because the boy of his literal dreams is stressing him out so much he’s about to dissolve into ashes and ascend to a higher realm where he has no worries.
Unfortunately, he’s not quite there yet, so Duke has to deal with living in the reality where Danny admits he already died because that’s just what he does: die young.
Which is, apparently, not Duke’s fault at all. Cool.
Cool cool cool. He’s definitely not going to have a breakdown about this.
A hand gently tugs on his wrist, making him lift his head to meet Danny’s worried gaze. “Hey, you alright? Do you wanna sit down for a minute?”
And you know what? Duke does want to sit down for a minute. He’s earned it.
He nods, and Danny carefully guides him back to where the roof access door is, so they can sit with their backs against something and be away from the edge where curious eyes might spot them. It feels easy, practiced, as if they’ve done this a thousand times before instead of just now having their first conversation. Their lives have been linked and twisted together, though only for a short time before death takes Danny away.
He knows Danny, despite how illogical it is, and that’s what makes him take off his helmet and exposure his face to the world.
Danny knows him too, after all.
There is no hiding from someone who is meant to be in his life.
Danny’s smiling softly when he turns to look at him. “Hey, Duke. It’s good to see you properly. Is it weird to say that I’ve missed you even though we’ve technically never met in this life?”
“Nah,” he replies, “I missed you too. Please stop scaring me like that.”
“I make no promises. Expect for this: dying won’t take me away from you in this life. I’ve got it handled.”
“I don’t… I don’t think that’s someone anyone can have handled.”
“I’ve got it handled,” Danny repeats firmly.
Duke shakes his head with a small laugh. He got so caught up in the guilt of leading to Danny’s death, of being unable to save him, of losing  him in every universe, that he forgot how stubborn Danny is.
It is a weight off his chest, though. To know that it wasn’t his fault. To know that the worst has already come to pass long before they met in this universe, so they don’t have to fear the future together.
“So,” he says, “Tell me more about these magical ghostly shenanigans?”
“At least wait until the second date for personal questions,” Danny jokes.
“Okay. Wanna grab dinner tonight?”
It’s nice to see that Danny blushes easily in this universe too. “Isn’t that moving a little fast?”
“We’ve been dreaming about a bunch of other universes where we’re together. We know each other even though we don’t know each other. We’re well past moving fast, dude.”
“Yeah, that’s fair,” Danny nods. “Alright. Dinner tonight, then. Take me to the best place for breakfast foods in Gotham. I’ve been craving pancakes all week.”
“Sure, I can do that. Mind giving me your number so I can figure out where to pick you up from?”
Danny nods and begins patting his pockets in search of… something. Duke means to grab his phone and hand it to Danny to get his number, but he’s quickly distracted as Danny gives up on his pockets and shoves a hand directly into his own chest.
Ghostly magic shenanigans. This is probably part of it?  Danny doesn’t look alarmed by this at all, so Duke rolls with it and shoves away his shock at the sight.
“Aha!” Danny holds up a sharpie in triumph. He sure did pull that straight out of his ribcage. Duke is so chill with it.
He lets Danny take hold of his arm, removing a wrist gauntlet so he can write on the skin. The cool ink of the sharpie makes him shiver, but otherwise, he stays still. Danny writes carefully, in smooth movements. It doesn’t take more than a few seconds, then he pulls the sharpie away and blows a surprisingly cold breath against Duke’s wrist to help the ink dry faster.
“There we go,” he says with a smile. “Let me know when you wanna have our date, okay? I’m free whenever, so don’t worry about accommodating me or anything.
“I’ll text you once I’m ready,” Duke agrees. He stands up, looking over the numbers written on his wrist. He memorizes them, then puts his wrist gauntlet back on. It’s about time for him to get back to being the Signal, as much as he hates to leave Danny here when they’ve finally been able to have a quiet moment to themselves.
“I’ll see you later, then.” Danny hesitates, then leans forward and presses a quick, chaste kiss against Duke’s cheek. Duke blinks at him, stunned, his heart skipping a beat.
He doesn’t get the chance to return the gesture; Danny flushes red, backs up a few steps with a shy grin, and says, “Okay, bye Duke! Stay safe out there!” And then he’s gone, blinking out of sight, and it’s only his meta powers that let him see a faint wispy outline where Danny was.
It moves, floating up in the air, then flies away like smoke in the breeze.
Ah, Duke thinks, Ghostly. He’s a ghost. I’ll worry about that later.
His fingers brush against the spot where Danny kissed him. Then he puts his helmet back on and focuses on swinging through the streets of Gotham, ready for anything.
The sooner he gets done with patrol, the better, after all. He needs all his focus to do that so he can start getting ready for his date with Danny, the literal boy of his dreams.
This time, this life, this universe, they’re gonna do it right. They’ll make up for all the time their other selves lost. They’ll cherish every minute together, one pancake date at a time.
And to think, it only took a couple dozen different lives to get here.

Duke: Thanks for the copy of lecture notes. I owe you one
Jazz: you can pay me back by introducing me to the guy that picked you up last Tuesday
Duke: guy?
Jazz: with the bike
Duke:
Jazz: white patch in his hair
Duke: Jason?
(… out of everyone, you chose Duke? 😭 /nm)
Part 2
Duke approached Jason like he was walking to the guillotine.
Jason raised an eyebrow. He stepped off of his bike, inspecting him. “What’s wrong with you?”
Duke sighed deeply. Then he handed him a piece of paper. Jason stared at it blankly without taking it. When Duke pushed it into his face, Jason finally snatched it and looked at the contents, which were a string of neatly written numbers. A phone number, to be exact.
“… okay. Is this your teacher’s number or something?” Jason was especially baffled. Usually, it was a combination of Dick, Alfred, or Bruce who made the phone calls to teachers. Sometimes, it was Tim, but it was never Jason.
“No. A friend of mine wanted to give you her phone number.”
Jason sneered, crinkling the paper. He was about to toss it away when Duke suddenly said, “You’ll regret that.”
Jason paused, still clenching the paper. “Pardon?”
Duke sighed. “I know I’m going to regret this, but you’ll regret it even more than me if you throw that paper away. I swear to Nightwing’s ass, she is absolutely your type. You’re making the biggest mistake of your life if you throw that away.”
“I’m pretty sure the biggest mistake of my life was dying,” Jason deadpanned.
Duke rolled his eyes. He pulled out his phone, scrolled for a moment, and then brought up his Instagram feed, where an image of a woman was sitting at a table, smiling at the camera.
She was drop dead gorgeous, enchanting enough to make the dead revive to see her one last time, lovely enough to make the clouds move to use the sun’s light as a spotlight for her, and beautiful enough to cause a world war if she even shed a single tear.
She had red hair like fire lilies, eyes like crystalline waters, looked tall, and had a sense of otherworldliness to her like she was a goddess from heaven that came to the mortal realm to grace everyone with her presence.
Jason scrubbed his eyes and looked again, eyes nearly falling from his skull. He blinked rapidly, almost wondering if this was real.
Was it humanly possible to be this good-looking?
“I know,” Duke deadpanned, sounding like he had aged 60 years in an instant. “And yes, it’s real. I see her in real life. She likes books, is super nice and helps everyone, is a huge nerd, and likes ‘bad boys with motorcycles’. Her words, which makes me want to puke.”
Jason unclenched his suddenly sweaty palms, quickly smoothed out the paper, and then clapped Duke on the shoulder. “You’ve done me a great service today,” Jason said gravely. “I won’t ever forget your help today.”
“I think I’m going to throw myself off the Clocktower,” Duke said.
“You have helped create a union of two hearts on this day. I could shine your shoes right now if you wanted.”
“Please don’t. Seeing you on your knees would make me actually lose my lunch for real.”

I See All of You & You Are Magnificent
Monster x Monster
Tumblr media
When Duke and Danny first met they could see through eachothers glamor and were immediately taken by each other's true form. Both of their forms are inconceivable to most people, and they both have a deep want to be known and loved for their true selves.
Duke’s form is very bright, the light he generates is blinding, under it he is like a bird, the Grey Crowned Crane to be specific. But he doesn’t really look like one, kind of like those angels with a bunch of eyes and wings, he’s got a bird neck/head and a pair of his wings are connected to his arms like bat wings. The golden rings of eyes are around his head, torso and legs. He’s got a giant pair of wings on his back and a set on his heels. His bird head and his human head exist at the same time kinda like those holographic drawings where you see it depending on how you look at it.
Danny is kinda like a black hole he produces no light but a slight rim of light going into him. Under all of that he’s got long thin and sharp limbs. His suit looks like it’s just a pattern on his skin, and the symbol has kinda faded away. He's got these big antlers on his head and his mouth is filled with fangs, to the point where it doesn’t seem like he should be able to close his mouth. His hands are sharp and slaw like, and his eyes blink sideways. His tongue is uncomfortably long.
They both look disturbingly uncanny without their glamorous, and some of their true form traits can peek through. Like Duke’s extra eyes being able to see the future are visible over where the rings would be. Or Danny’s fangs and claws accidentally ripping into things.
Tumblr media
DUKE
No you don’t understand he sees me and I can see him and he’s perfect. I’m not all that human and I’ve never been and when Danny looks at me he doesn’t just see some random human boy he sees me. He sees the blinding light of my existence and he can perceive me and he loves me. And I love him, in all his eldritch horror he is perfect to me and I love him. Because he’s him and he understands me to my core. I love him.
DANNY
It’s just- he just gets me. He can see me for me and he always has. And Jazz the first time Duke looked at me he seemed so enamored by me, so taken by me, and he saw me for me every time he saw me. He wants me even though I’m an ugly and horrific being. And I love him even though he deserves so much more than me. He is so bright and beautiful and he is the sun and I love him.
Tumblr media
When Gnomon and Duke first fought the light bomb went off and the glamor that Elaine had put over Duke was forcefully removed by the explosion. Bruce and Duke were terrified and Gnomon took his chance to make a deal with Duke. Duke comes to the archives with him and learns how to make his own glamor and adapt to his true form.
Duke is able to convince him to just bring the proper information to Gotham so he doesn’t have to leave. Bruce offores up Wayne Manor as a place where Duke could learn.
It takes a couple of months and Gnomon gets a bit of a redemption arc in that time, but he is unable to properly heal Elaine and Doug.
Now Duke can make his own glamor and knows some things about Gnomon’s side of the family. He’s gone back to living a relatively normal life if you don’t count the vigilante and ethereal being stuff.
Duke being born of an archivist and being of light is kind of weird. He speaks/writes all languages and knows far too much. While also being able to manipulate light and the lack of light, along with seeing where all light was/is/will be. Combined those last two abilities give him future visions, which are underdeveloped because of his age and inexperience.
-
The Batfam’s reaction to Duke not being a regular meta and actually being a high caliber ethereal being was better than it could have been. They all had already gotten close to Duke and were accepting of his weaker powers, but the knowledge that Duke was so much more than they could ever be was daunting.
Duke was scared that they may never want him back, Cass was the first to notice Duke shrinking into himself and she quickly made sure the others knew how their less than stellar reactions. They all go out of their way to make sure Duke knows he’s loved even though he’s different. Duke really appreciates their new attitude.
When Duke is feeding into his archivist habits he spends his time in the Wayne Library, letting some of his inhuman traits come through.
Duke keeps going to Middletown South with Izzy, Troy, Dre & Riko, and lives between his cousin Jay’s home and Wayne Manor.
---
As Danny gets older as a ghost his ghostly form becomes more and eldritch, he’s been instinctively making a secondary glamor to go over his ghostly form so nobody goes mad because of it. When he defeats Pariah, Clockwork and Frostbite take him aside and explain that his true form needs to start dropping the glamor more and learn how to take care of himself in that aspect.
So Danny spends the rest of Sophomore year figuring out himself and what it means to be him, as both a person and a ghost. Over this time he sets up some truces with the other ghosts so he doesn't have to stress every second.
Before Danny’s Junior year the Fenton parents decided to move to Gotham because of all the spooky shit that happens over there. Jazz is already living there for college and even though Danny is against it they end up dragging him to Jersey.
Danny is enrolled in Middletown South, which is thankfully similar enough to Casper High that Danny doesn’t have too much of a culture shock.

DUKE
I’d noticed a sort of void that whole day really, I hadn’t thought much of them until they started looking my way.
And when I took a peak at them and saw them for their truth, I could barely even breath.
He’s magnificent, gorgeous, in an eldritch way that just fits him. His antlers were bigger than the regular kid, spiraling out of control. His claws are so sharp I swear they could cut through space itself.
And he was looking at me, he saw me.
DANNY
It was like seeing a bright light right on your peripherals. I just had to look over, see what I couldn’t quite see.
He was so painfully bright I had to blink a couple dozen times before I could see him properly.
He’s magnificent, wonderful, ethereal even. His largest wings seemed to lay all around him, his eyes glancing this way and that way.
Until they settled on me and saw me.
Tumblr media
Duke and Danny first say to each other on the first day of school, second period math class. They’d both been able to feel each other's presence, but neither went out of their way to really look at each other until then.
Danny was the first to take a peak, what with Duke being a literal beacon of light he wasn’t easy to ignore. Duke saw him second, noticing the staring and truly focused on Danny and saw him. They both fell for each other right then and there.
Neither really realized the whole love thing and just wanted to get to know each other. Duke ends up inviting Danny to come and sit with him and his friends for lunch. Izzy, and Dre catch on quickly to Duke’s semi crush on Danny, and get Troy and Riko in on the whole setting the two up. They exchanged numbers and Danny agrees to meet with them again tomorrow. Btws Dax goes to another school.
-
When the Fentons moved to Gotham they did so to try and learn more about the Gotham specific ghosts they think exist there. They ended up choosing Crime Alley “Park Row” as a place to stay in because of the higher levels of ectoplasm and the Red Hood being known to be kinda ghostly. Jack and Maddie spend most of the first month they’re in Gotham setting up shop in the basement of the building they’ve moved into.
Jazz and Danny are basically living out of Jazz’s dorm at Gotham University. Jazz’s roommate hasn’t moved in yet so the two get the place to themselves. Danny doesn’t want to listen to their parents prepare for their ghost hunting bullshit. And Jazz would much rather have her brother around instead of being alone for the two weeks before college.
Danny isn’t doing the whole Phantom thing anymore cause 1) isn't really needed with all the heroes in Gotham, 1.5) he doesn’t want to encroach on the bat’s terf, 2) he really needs this break, and 3) it’s better if his parents assume Phantom didn’t follow them all the way to Jersey.
Jack and Maddie do stake outs after they’re ready, at this point it’s a week into the school year. They pick up a very weak ectoplasmic signature from Jason, but he’s similar to Vlad in intensity so they aren’t sure if he’s dead or if he got infected by some pure ectoplasm. They run after him at one point, but then Jason shoots at them with very real guns and they decide to just back off for now.
-
As the weeks go by Danny gets closer to the WR group, he and Riko have third and fourth period, Izzy and him share sixth period with Duke, and Troy and Dre have first period together with Danny. Danny doesn’t really talk much about his family besides his sister going to GU and his parents deciding to move to Gotham as well because it had better opportunities for their work.
One day after school, when Danny’s walking to Jazz’s place, Danny almost gets mugged and Duke comes down and saves him. They recognize each other on sight and just kinda stare, before Danny says something stupid like, “I knew you were an angel the moment I saw you, just didn’t think you’d be the guardian type.” Then Duke laughs and says something equally dumb like, “Well the most lovely of beings always deserve a guardian angel don’t they?”
Of course then Danny has to swear he’ll keep the whole Duke is Signal thing. This is when the two start actually flirting with each other, and like falling for eachother.
-
After their retreat from Red Hood, the Fentons decide to go after a new vigilante, Black Bat. Because obviously if nobody can ever sense, hear, or really see them, then they have to be a ghost.
Cass being Cass is basically impossible to track, but she has enough ectoplasm in her system that they get small pings from her. Eventually Maddie and Jack corner Cass, she mainly lets them do so out of curiosity. They tried to attack or pin her down, but Cass just led them on a wild goose chase across Gotham.
They lose her, and end up just deciding to head back home, it’s dawn and Signal is still out on the town. Jack and Maddie get a weird alert, and follow it to him. They see Signal using his powers a little. Because Duke isn’t really a ghost he ticks off the Fentons’ general supernatural being detector. Now the Fentons have someone else to hunt down.
Tumblr media
Duke isn’t a ghost or ectoplasmic being, he’s more of a different thing. A hybrid between the Ichor Beings of Light[Gnomon], and the Archivists[Elaine] who are a branch species from the Ichor Beings. Elaine was an Archivist of Light before she gave up that power running away from Gnomon. So the Fenton tech doesn’t affect him.
Jason was the first to mention the Fentons hunting him down, Cass said later that they had started tailing her, and when they actually kept up with her the rest of the family got a tad curious. Then a month in the school year they shot at Signal in broad daylight. Now everybody is worried, the shot didn’t do much besides push Duke back, kinda like a bb gun.
Duke immediately up and dipped because he was not about to deal with that, but tagged the Fentons with a tracker/bug to find out who they are. Duke does some digging into the Fentons with Cass and Jason, when they find out about Danny and Jazz, Duke is stunned, scared a little even.
-
Duke ends up telling the rest of the Batfam about Danny and that he knows about the whole Duke is Signal thing. Of course they all can tell that Duke is crushing hard on the eldritch son of two mad scientists. Bruce’s first reaction is holy shit please god why. Because all his children end up with people that he knows probably aren't the best idea. Cass asks him if Danny can come over for a visit [interrogation]. Duke agrees to ask Danny to come round, but as long as the bats promise not to overwhelm him.
Because the W Robins already know about the whole bat thing it's just Danny who's kind of out of the loop.
At this point Duke and Danny kinda got a situationship going on, they're not really dating but they're kinda also flirting with each other. It's basically a matter of time until they get together at this point, so getting Danny to agree to come over to Wayne manor was relatively easy.
-
The next day over the phone Duke tells Danny that his parents shot at him while Duke was Signal, and Danny is so embarrassed and concerned. He apologizes for his parents and what they did. Duke convinces Danny to come over to his foster family's place, the batfamily, so they could talk about it more, and what the colony could do to prevent the Fentons from becoming a problem.
Danny agrees to come over, the next day around dawn near the end of Signal’s patrol, Duke takes his bike and goes to pick up Danny and drive him to the batcave through the underground tunnels.
Danny spends the first few minutes in the batcave just ogling all the new things, then the bats go out of their way to scare the shit out of him before they get the meeting underway.
Danny explains that his parents came to Gotham to investigate the ectoplasm levels and the stories about the bats being inhuman. They went after Red Hood and Black Bat because they have enough levels of ectoplasm to be traced with Fenton tech.
After Danny agrees to help them bypass the sensors, Bruce asks about Danny’s own inhuman nature he gets a bit clammy about it, but explains that he was basically conceived, born and raised in a home with high levels of ectoplasm floating around, it just took one accident to really strip him of his humanity fully.
Duke drives Danny home a little after that, they end up talking outside Jazz’s dorm building, a minor confession occurs but they’re both stupid and don’t realize what happened. Jazz immediately teases Danny about him hanging out with Signal, Danny denies that anything is happening between them.
Tumblr media
Okay so Duke and Danny, when they first meet each other it was more in the sense of “Wow they are so cool and pretty I wanna be their friend”. Then when they meet as Signal and Danny it’s kinda like “Holy heck did not know you were so beautiful/hot”. Now they’re kinda flirty with each other, but neither think that the other actually likes them.
So it’s this dumb will they won't they kinda think, and everyone around them is so done with them about it.

Things we shouldn’t start
[Duke x Danny]
When Duke Thomas received the opportunity to go as an exchange student to some small city school in the Midwest, he took it. He’s been a native Gothamite his whole life, rarely leaving the city’s borders beyond missions and the occasional school field trip. This exchange opportunity left him close enough to help in case of emergency, but far enough away to not be their first call. The others thought him crazy, claimed he’d never be able to last through a whole school year.
Well Duke said the same thing he said when people told him he couldn’t out think The Riddler.
“Bet.”
There were a few odd reports from him in the first month, but after that he claimed that all was well and handled. The crime rates in town were indeed as low as was claimed.
By month four, the family were certain he must be going stir crazy without any vigilante action, yet no word from his reports nor any of his FaceTime calls gave any hint of such a state of mind.
The various pictures he sent at holidays and random intervals were pretty normal, a little blurry sometimes, but just of average teen things. Selfies of him with some new friends from classes, pictures of said friends doing random things, pictures of tv screens with various games loading, pictures of random objects with weird or hilarious captions. It was almost odd how normal everything was.
Thus, that was how the time passed and Duke returned to them looking refreshed and happy if not a little wistful when he thought about the friends he’d had to leave behind.
Money exchanged hands and not in the direction most of them expected, since according to all evidence, Duke had a very relaxing and restful school year without going stir crazy.
Life continued on as usual for the Wayne’s and Co. both day and night.
Then came Damian’s birthday and with it his usual birthday assassins.
Now normally this wasn’t too huge of an issue. The family fought them off and by the end of the day, they retreated back to their master.
However, this time Arkham faced a massive breakout calling all hands on deck.
A larger group of about 7 assassins piggybacked off of an attack from Penguin’s goons managing to separate Robin from Signal and Spoiler.
With the goons surrounding them, they couldn’t reach Robin to help.
Signal put two fingers to his lips and let out a long two toned whistle.
The goons paused, waiting for whatever that was about. When nothing seemed to happen they began closing in.
“What the flipping fruit loops was that Signal?” Spoiler asked bewildered.
He didn’t answer but cocked his head a little and then stuck one arm straight out from his body.
Out of the shadows came a long stringy blur of black and white with bright green eyes only for Signal’s outstretched arm.
The thing perched upon his arm on spindly limbs. It was a somewhat humanoid being with white floating hair and a gas mask covering what might have been a face as it stared at him with its head tilted at an odd angle.
“To Robin,” Signal ordered and lifted his arm just like a falconer might do to give their Falcon better lift on their take off.
The thing shot off like a bullet from a gun and bowled into the nearest assassins with bodily force.
The goons stared. Spoiler stared. The assassins being very well trained attempted to stay on task while Robin wisely focused on fighting for his life.
Signal didn’t hesitate to deck the nearest goon and start into the next. He wasted no time in knocking them out of the fight so they could secure them.
Spoiler finally jolted out of her stupor to help him with the last few while Robin and the thing finished knocking out assassins. The thing/creature barely touched its feet to the ground, preferring to float and swoop around, limbs dancing above the ground.
Once Signal passed off the last of the handcuffing to Spoiler, he held out his arm once more and the creature flew to him happily. It perched once more and let out a wheezing raspy sound.
Signal dipped his arm and ruffled the creature’s hair with his free hand.
“Thank you babe. How long can you stay?”
The answering crackle of ice and hiss of an airlock opening into empty space seemed to have some sort of meaning only Signal could understand because his grin widened.
“Awesome. I’ll let Agent A know you’re coming.”
“That was absolutely Not what he said,” came the mechanized voice of Red Hood from a nearby rooftop. He dropped down to their level. Spoiler stared between Signal and Hood while Damian’s brow furrowed so deeply that Signal wanted to joke he’d get it stuck like that.
“What in the…” Spoiler breathed.
The creature let out a sound like a shifting glacier followed by a little questioning “brr?”
Duke watched on curiously, his fingers never leaving the swirling floating hair of his little pseudo falcon.
“No. I’m not dead.”
The sharp crack in response made Spoiler flinch.
“Okay, maybe…why the flip does that matter and it doesn’t explain why you waxed poetic about our spotlight here and he claimed you said something completely different.”
The sound of metal creaking and groaning under the pressure of empty space had a spine tingling echo to it. The creature’s head bobbed in what might have been acknowledgement or embarrassment, impossible to tell with the mask. They followed it up with a hum that shifted between several uncomfortable pitches.
“Okay, never mind. You two are officially the funniest fucks on the planet.”
Signal grinned and the creature perked up in its approximation of excitement.
“Okay, not to ruin this very touching and confusing moment, but we still have to find Penguin and whoever else is left on the list of escapees this time,” Spoiler chimed in.
“Agreed,” Damian stated. He’d been oddly quiet throughout the whole encounter, but seemed to jump back into work mode when reminded.
Signal looked to his creature.
“You ready?” With their nod he launched them off again. Signal watched them go off through the buildings, literally phasing through walls with a fond smile.
“Eww.”
“What?” Signal raised a brow.
“You can have your little cryptid boyfriend but keep it pg or I’m coming for your kneecaps.”
Signal choked a little and coughed before taking off to a nearby roof.
“Oh. My. God…” Spoiler drew in a huge breath before shouting, “THAT’S YOUR BOYFRIEND?!”
Things not featured/mentioned but are there:
Danny actually used morse code to convey himself to Duke while just using ghost speak for the effect. Yes, they are absolutely little dramatic bastards.
Damian being able to understand the equivalent of every third word of ghost speak and is attempting to process that while also making sure no more birthday assassins sneak up on him. Boi be strugglin
Yes Danny came up and just basically started going. “Hello my love, my bright summer’s day, my shining star and dearest one. I missed you and did you know you are absolutely gorgeous in that suit. I love seeing it….”
Danny and Jason’s conversation: “bro, you’re death kin?” “No. I’m not dead.” “I said death kin not dead.” “Okay, maybe…” “That’s why you can understand me when I speak like this. Duke can’t understand it, we just use Morse code and my ghost speak is just audio effects.” “Okay, never mind. You two are officially…”
Duke had a great time in Amity Park and while he wasn’t exactly being a vigilante he was absolutely being a ghost hunter with the Dp crew. They are the friends in the pictures he took. He and Danny finally moved on to dating only 2 months before he had to leave. When Duke found out Danny’s identity, he revealed his own and they finally both admitted their feelings for one another.
Duke and Danny absolutely practiced the falcon thing back in Amity Park. They think they’re hilarious and I agree.
Tumblr media
Two bros, chillin in the batcave, 0 feat apart cuz they’re best friends
Also because Danny weighs like a wet baby crow in ghost form and he likes to have his Perch.
Duke would sooner take up Condiment King duties than turn him down

Batfam and Danny, Part 15
Danny: Hey Bruce, I was curious about your behavior regarding the adoption of children, so I did some blood work on you and found something interesting.
Bruce (concerned): When did you get my blood?
Danny: That's not important, did you know you're part dragon?
Bruce: Pardon?
Jason: Hold on a minute, are we his hoard?
Danny: Yup.
Dick: Great, I'm a mere trinket.
Damian: That means I'm also part dragon, are my pets my hoard? Hmm... that's not important right now. I'm part dragon! Bow down before me mortals!
Danny: Well by part I mean very little, it's basically nothing. Wherever this dragon ancestor is on your family tree they're very far back.
Tim: Ha! Take that you little demon.
Damian: I know where you sleep Timothy.
Alfred: Master Damian, you know the rules, no murders inside the manor. And now that I think about it, there is a legend on Thomas' side of the family that one of his ancestors fought a dragon.
Steph: Clearly it was not a fight of sword and claws.
Cass (signing): More like bodies and bedsheets.
Duke: How?
Danny: Some dragons can take on human forms.
Bruce: Can we circle back to the fact that Danny took some of my blood at some point without me knowing?

dc x dp group chat shenanigans
So basically, Dick makes a group chat for the minorities in the family because sometimes Bruce just doesn’t get it you know?
And Danny? Started going to school in Gotham. That’s it.
Dick created a group chat.
Dick renamed the group chat “The Minority Chat”
Dick: Okay everyone, if you don’t have a reason to stay, leave.
Dick: Nobody left.
Tim: Well yeah, Dick. All of us are minorities.
Damian: Yes, I have to agree with Drake. For example, I am half Arabic.
Duke: I’m black.
Cass: …
Babs: I’m disabled.
Steph: Teen pregnancy.
Tim: RAMCOA
Dick: Well what about you Jason?
Jason: I fucking died bro.
Dick renamed the group chat “Sib Chat”
This group chat went on to become the best way for them to vent to each other about Bruce and share memes to each other. They also sometimes randomly kick someone out so the others can stalk them. This time it was Damian’s turn.
Duke has removed Damian from “Sib Chat”
Duke: Guys I just saw the weirdest shit on patrol today.
Cass: ?
Babs: With Damian? He’s meant to be at school today.
Tim: He’s there, his tracker hasn’t moved locations.
Steph: When did you sneak a tracker onto Damian?
Tim: Don’t worry about it.
Duke: Don’t worry he is at school. But get this. I saw him eating his lunch outside. And he was talking to someone. AND SMILING.
Cass: 😮
Tim: Was it his “I’m gonna kill this guy while he’s sleeping” smile?
Duke: NO
Tim: Oh shit
Babs: Did you see who it was? I can run a background check.
Duke: No. But I will keep you posted. Where are Jason and Dick btw?
Babs: Dick is sleeping and Jason got shot.
Duke: Oh okay. Don’t let him administer his own Dilaudid.
Babs: Trust me, I won’t.
A few weeks later
Duke has removed Damian from “Sib Chat”
Babs: Please tell me you got info
Duke: I do. And it’s weird
Jason: Don’t tell me Dami got a SO and didn’t tell me?!
Duke: God I hope not.
Cass: ???
Steph: Spill the tea macho man
Duke: Recognized the backpack from last time. I saw the kid Dami was all smiley with at a coffee shop and I shit you not, he looks like if Damian was white.
Jason: The fuck does that mean?
Duke: IM TELLING YOU! He was Damian but white!
Steph: What would that even look like?
Cass: 🤔
Jason: I’ll believe it when I see it.
6 hours later after dark
Jason: Holy shit you were right.
Duke: YOU SAW HIM TOO?!
Jason: That was terrifying.
Dick: Wait this isn’t a joke? I thought Duke was pulling our leg-
Damian: What are you two rambling on about?
Tim: Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
Damian: I do not believe you.
Cass: …
Damian: Fine. I will not interrogate you all. I am going to get ready for patrol anyways.
Dick has removed Damian from “Sib Chat”
Dick: I wasn’t paying attention until now so you all better tell me everything.
