2023 Media Thread Pt4
Lethal Company: There's not a lot of criticism I can throw at this game that doesn't bounce off as part of the intended experience. I do think that while the quick and cheap deaths make for good comedic value, I think it downplays the terror if you just die without having any clue what happened in the early game. But other than that, it nails the vision even if it isn't for me. Mad respect 7/10
Gundam Evolution Last Shooting: I already missed this game a few weeks after it shuttered. By the final season, the balance was just right and in the final days the group I was playing with started to 'click' with some of the units. I for one, was a monster at the Kampher, racking up insane kill streaks. It's a shame it couldn't have been in this state at launch. Another game killed by its live service model. The final hurrah of lost potential. 7/10
Lego Fortnite: Have you played and early-access survival crafting game before? Good, you can skip this. It sure is one of these. It has a lot of rough edges since it's running inside the framework of another game that doesn't mesh particularly well with it. Plus, fiddling with graphics settings requires relaunch so I couldn't tweak it to look good either. I think what kind of ruins the experience was the rigidity of the progression, which while heavily gated behind too many menus, isn't signposted well. 4/10
Half-Life Deathmatch (25th-anniversary update): What an event! I wouldn't necessarily say I had 'fun', perhaps because the social element has been atrophied by decades of modern multiplayer practices, but I had a blast. We found a server filled with quake weapons with no time limit so it was a high-killstreak, low TTK chaotic mess for like 20 minutes one round. 6/10
Plagiarism and You(Tube): Hbomb's career-ending adventures continue. 7/10
Half-Life Uplink: A neat little bite of HL2. Not a lot of meat on these bones, but it really is impressive how hard they pushed 'realism' in the environmental interaction withing the confines of the engine. 7/10
Into the Radius: Interesting worldbuilding and an ace solitary vibe. It took a bit for the cumbersome resource management to 'click' but the vibes are there. However, I do feel like quicker access to more diverse weapons might have helped hook me more. My strongest experience was doing one of the first missions at night and it went full horror in a way I hadn't experienced yet.
Lego Masters S4: On the positive side, the hosts are finally coming into their own and the challenges felt much more fresh in a way that actually engaged with their medium. However both me and my partner felt the hand of the producers in ways that made us actually angry. Certain teams were straight-up bad. Duckbricks deserved it 100 tho. 7/10
Skyrim - Clockwork: An interesting framing device for an interesting player home. I think it repeated the pitfall of making the open areas too big to be fun to comb over, but the story beats were effective. 6.5/10
Tintin: This is about as good an 3dcg animated Tintin could be. it didn't tickle my fancy but it was gorgeous and had some real inventive sequences. Since they don't really make adventure movies like this anymore, I think it called to mind the treasure-hunting antics of a Lupin movie. objective 8/10 but for me a 7/10
The Boy and the Heron: I don't blame anyone for having trouble following the narrative, since this type of semi-linear magical realism nonsense is a genre I have familiarity with. I remind them that these things work on an emotional axis that Marvel has taught people to ignore. Shoutout to all the Ghibli fans shocked to see their Ghibli movie isn't like those interpolated cooking compilations and cozy Totoro slippers. 9/10
Dragnet (1987): This sure is a late 80's buddy cop action comedy. I wonder if these fellas end up having a future in show buisness or high-quality vodka beverages? It got one good laugh out of me. 5/10
Babylon 5: The Road Home: Honestly, props to MJS and all the returning actors because for a decades-removed continuation, this feels like it didn't miss a beat. I imagine the casting director was sweating bullets trying to recast G'kar though. How can you? 8/10
Pokemon Concierge: Short, sweet, and to the point. I was agape at the technical proficiency of the stop motion, enough that I didn't notice the plot at all. 6/10
Ronin Mecha 2: Defenders of Space: This was made by the 3rd die-hard Autobot Inferno fan for the other two. It lacks that gonzo factor of the rest of the series so far and was pretty skippable. We did pop off when 'Pheonix King' actually turned into a fire truck though. -3/10
Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2: At times like these, I regret watching bad movies selected by a spinning wheel. How did this get made? This feels like a tv pilot that got a theatrical release. Theres a Nazi getting beat up by babies???? -5/10
Revenge of the Ninja: Solid ninja movie. A bit meandering but it had the right amount of gadgetry and stunts to keep the crowd's energy up. Shoutout ninja grandma. 6/10
Votoms: the Pailsen Files: At its best, it is alright. At its worst, it is kind of embarrassing. The initial foray into poorly integrated cg mechs is badly integrated that it makes the digital animation look right out of the early digipaint era at times. The OP and ED are sauceless. 5/10

Old School X is a project interviewing X-Files fanfic authors who were posting fic during the original run of the show. New interviews are posted every Tuesday.
Interview with MustangSally
MustangSally has 33 stories at Gossamer. Even if you haven’t read it, you’ve probably heard of at least one of them, Iolokus, since it’s an X-Files fanfic classic. All her fics hit big and are well worth your time. I’ve recced some of my favorites here before, including And Dance by the Light of the Moon, All the Children are Insane, and Iolokus. Big thanks to MustangSally for doing this interview.
What's the story behind your pen name?
I could tell you but then I would have to kill you.
Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?
Yes and no. Yes, because life has moved on since the early nineties and the characters and the fans are in vastly different places now. Our current tech would make the premise of the X-Files impossible. No, because of the longevity of some of the Star Trek TOS work (there’s an archive of hard copy fanzines at the University of Iowa). Top-drawer authors started out in TOS fandom.
I’m just greatly saddened that my physical body is showing wear and tear while the fic doesn’t. Fic gets to stay smooth-skinned and muscular, captured at the peak of perfection.
What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?
At the risk of sounding atrociously trite, I think of the friends I made. I met some very remarkable women that I’ve been able to stay friends with online for over twenty-five years. We may have moved to Facebook and post entirely too much about our pets and which of our body parts has sagged this week, but we’re friends. It’s a furiously funny, feminist, and well-educated group of women with jobs in the highest levels of academia, finance, communications, and media. I’m amused by the fact that if I have a question about how a virus replicates, I can ask a PhD I’ve been drunk with in Las Vegas.
Back in the day, I had a job that sent me traveling around major cities in the US and UK. I could post on a message board and within ten minutes there were people I could go out for dinner and drinks with. We already knew we had something we could talk about for at least a couple of hours. Additionally, most of these people were women so there was an added level of security. Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?
Well, it was mostly atxc and the Yahoo! groups mailing lists that spiraled out into Geocities sites and, eventually, LiveJournal. The amusing thing is that getting in on the ground floor of social media and the Internet has helped me get jobs! When I look at a new piece of software, I think, ‘this is hella easier than uploading to Geocities.’ We had to walk uphill both ways, in the snow, on dial-up, fighting off dinosaurs with our AOL CDs while writing HTML code. What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?
DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS.
The past four years in politics have basically been the ugliest online kerfuffle the world has ever seen. I survived the Shipper Wars of ’96 and I thought those were brutal, but that was NOTHING. The only way to win an argument online is to not have the argument at all. Arguing with a troll is like mudwrestling a pig: You both get filthy and only the pig is happy.
Also, READ THE FUCKING TERMS OF SERVICE.
What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?
I had the most terrible straight-girl crush on Scully. I wanted to be her best friend, I wanted to BE her. I wanted to order Chinese food and paint each other’s nails and talk about bones. Scully and Princess Leia and I could all just hang out poolside with hot and cold running waiters and poolboys, drink margaritas, and bitch about how unfair it all was – if the stupid men would just get OUT OF THE WAY AND LET US DO OUR JOBS, the world would be so much better. What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?
This question is really about Iolokus, isn’t it? You can’t fool me. [Lilydale note: I can neither confirm nor deny the motivation for this question, but I cannot complain about the answer.]
Simply put, I was enraged. The moment it was revealed that Scully’s ova had been used in experimentation, I lost my feminist mind. It was the most obscene defilement imaginable. Scully wasn’t nearly as angry as I was. What I thought needed to happen was for Scully to become a fiery force of vengeance against the MEN who had done this to her. Clearly, I was not going to get that level of satisfaction from the show, as I was imagining Kali-like carnage on a global scale. I emailed RivkaT (whom I did not know well at that point) with a proposition that we work together. Strangely enough, we didn’t meet face to face until we were well into the project, but we did talk on the phone quite a bit. The rules were simple – everyone had to be punished in truly horrific ways, and at some point, we had to see if we could write a car chase (only because that seemed impossible). Then it basically turned into a very twisted game of chicken to see who could be the most outrageous in terms of killing people off or writing really horrific things that fit within the structure of the narrative. I did, in the end, write the car chase, but RivkaT one-upped me by throwing in a helicopter (a FOX News helicopter, at that).
Really, RivkaT? A helicopter? What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom? I am terribly proud of what I wrote, pleased that it brought pain and pleasure in equal amount to people, and, again, thrilled by the people I became friends with. I admit that I stopped watching the show when Scully announced her pregnancy. I could only see a long jump over a shark tank for the rest of the series. I haven’t watched the new episodes, either. It is complete in my mind and doesn’t need to be continued. I wouldn’t say no to having a reunion with some of my fic friends, although we’re still chatting online like everyone does. Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?
Rivka and I wrote in the Buffy fandom for a few years, but then we moved on to real adult jobs that left absolutely no time for me to write. I’m in education, and I regularly sweat blood for fear that someone is going to find my old fic. The Buffy people were fun; there was a certain *shininess* to them that I really enjoyed. The X-men authors were just batshit and delightful, and some amazing stuff came out of Marvel fandom, particularly in the Thor/Loki and Steve/Bucky subgenres. I’ve learned to appreciate a good coffee shop AU and one famous Erik/Charles fic where all the main characters are crabs. Seriously, crabs—it’s hysterical. [Lilydale note: Other Crabs Cannot Be Trusted by groovyphilia currently has almost 2,500 kudos at AO3.]
Every few years, I’ll have a student try to explain to me what fandom is and I just smirk. Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully? No. Not really. Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom? I fell into an X-Men hole a few years back and had a great old time wallowing in the Cherik muck, and there was a flirtation with BBC Sherlock as well. Strangely enough, I became interested in A/B/O fics only because of what they were saying about the role of women in our society. The limitations on the male omegas seem absurd and then you realize those are the same limitations put on women all. the. time.
Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?
RivkaT very nicely formatted everything and put it up on AO3. What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?
I will always be stupidly proud of how shocked and horrified people were by Iolokus. The truth of the matter is that Iolokus has Greek drama at its core. Scully is Medea, and the entire story is lousy with “blood on the threshing floor” and Dionysian rites. The everyday is subverted into horror, and wives and daughters will tear men limb from limb like the Maenads. Since I was ultimately disappointed with what Chris Carter did with the entire show, that approach seemed appropriate.
At a certain level, all fic is corrective fic. Like critic Anne Jamison said, “Irritated fans produce fanfic like irritated oysters produce pearls.” And because fic has fallen so much into women’s sphere, a pure form of correction is not just the death of the author but the MURDER, a new creation springing up from the spilled blood like Cadmus sowing dragon’s teeth.
Okay, that’s a bit much. Maybe I should just take myself back to the isle of Goth Amazons or something. Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?
I had to write a self-evaluation and a reflection on pedagogy today. If that’s not fiction, I don’t know what the fuck is.
All my creativity is caught up in trying to pretend to be a normal middle-aged white woman so no one knows I am really a lizard.
Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?
Keep writing, keep reading, keep fighting the commercialization of narratives. As things grow more and more commodified, all our dreams and desires reduced to tchotchkes made in China, it’s a revolutionary act to separate your work from the marketplace. Be bold, take chances, turn the trope on its ear and kick it in the ass. Take everything the creators have done to make a work palatable to the unwashed masses and set it on fire.
Be subversive.
Be mean.
Have a great fucking time.

marley kid question!! what kind of movies/tv genres do you think the kids are into?? personally my guesses are - gabi is into action adventure movies, obviously. maybe a bit of a marvel girl. falco will watch them with her, he likes action movies too but his favourite genre is probably romcoms tbh (though he’d never admit it). zofia strikes me a horror movie kinda gal. when it’s her turn to pick the movie during sleepovers everyone knows they’re in a for a ride, but they def enjoy it anyway. udo is definitely a documentary kid. i can see him kicking back with some david attenborough. he’s also into mystery’s, and likes older films. definitely thinks jurassic park and clue are cinematic masterpieces.
ah, another after hours post. you already know i love answering questions about my favorite kiddos!
Gabi
As far as Gabi goes, your right on the dot!!
She loves action and adventure movies
She LOVES LOVES LOVES marvel and i think ive mentioned that in previous headcanons!
She constantly slanders dc movies even though they’re Falco’s personal favorite
Gabi really likes girl power stories, so captain marvel and black widow are some of her favorite movies
However of course spiderman is her all time fav
She even went as spider gwen for halloween one year
However something else she also loves is star wars! the four of them all love star wars!!
They always go to the movies the first day of the new star wars movie showing
And plan sleepovers around when episodes of the shows drop sometimes
However only Gabi and Udo are the only ones that really keep up with the shows
Like the clone wars, the mandalorian (my personal fav) and the book of boba fett
Gabi is horror movie enjoyer, although she’ll never admit most of them scare the absolute hell out of her
Often times at sleepovers she’ll be forced to watch some that Zofia’s brought anyway
She insists she would survive them all and theorizes about how she would with her friends
She won’t watch them alone, but hokier classics are her fav
She especially loves the childs play series
Shes also a pretty avid anime watcher, hunter x hunter is totally her fav
Falco
Honestly Falco has mixed tastes when it comes to pretty much anything
His guilty pleasure is turning on some PBS or BBC channels while he does his homework so he doesn’t pay attention but doesn’t sit in silence
But somehow he always gets distracted when those damn cooking tutorials come on ESPECIALLY Julia Child (if you know you know :))
Which eventually gives him a love of the food network!!
He doesn’t try any of the recipes himself but he does suggest them to his mom
Or convinces Udo to make them
When it comes to serious TV watching, he does love DC comic movies
hes loved batman since he was a kid and won’t let gabi bully him out of it
Although he does tell her that he likes marvel better in hopes that it would score him some points
His other guilty pleasure is definitely romcoms though
He came home one day and his mom was watching one and he got hooked
Hes too scared of Colt catching him watching them alone, so he only watches them with his mom
Christmas hallmark movies are his personal fav
And he has occasionally shed a tear over them
Zofia
Zofia is most certainly a horror fan
She loves all the classics
Nightmare on elm street, Friday the 13th, the Halloween series, Childs play she ways them UP!!
She watches a lot of obscure and older horror movies that not a lot of people have heard of
But she also watches the fucking DISTURBING shit
Like megan is missing, tusk and midsommar
And she’ll watch them alone in the dead of night and sleep just fine
She always says they only scare her in the moment not after shes finished watching them
Only one horror movie has ever actually scared her
It was hereditary, but she got over it really quickly
She watched it with her friends and it scared them all so bad Gabi went home early, Falco threw up and Udo didn’t sleep for four days
Shes always gravitated towards creepier things when she was little, her favorite movie was probably the last unicorn and her favorite show was goosebumps
As for TV shows, she likes true crime
Shows like Tiger King, Forensic Files and cold cases are some of her favorites
And of course law and order
She also likes those cheesy YA shows like riverdale, pretty little liars and tiny pretty things
Its what she normally turns on during the day while shes just snacking or painting
Although shows like that seriously convince her fashion choices
Her absolute guilty pleasure is the twilight series though
She really likes it and all her friends make fun of her so she pretends that she likes it ironically
But in reality she has all the books and the limited edition dvd’s
Udo
Although he prefers reading
Udo really likes fantasy!
Star wars, harry potter, lord of the rings you name it he loves it
When he gets older, game of thrones is his absolute favorite
Thick book sets are on all of his bookshelves and even stacked neatly on the floor when they don’t fit
He likes to read book series then watch their movie/show counterparts
But of course he likes documentaries
Animal planet, national geographic and autobiographical are nice background noise for him while he studies, reads or cooks
He even occasionally even watches conspiracy documentaries
He thinks it keeps him sharp and he learns something new and a new perspective everytime he watches them and values that
But of course he loves 80’s movies
Jaws, the goonies are jurassic park are some of his favorites
80’s horror movies are the only horror movies he can handle
He thinks clue is a cinematic masterpiece and hes totally correct. clue is the greatest movie of all time and no i don’t take criticism.
Its his favorite movie to watch with his mom ever since she showed it to him
His favorite does have to be old mystery movies and shows
Old as in ones that he watched with his grandma when he was little
Agatha Cristie works like Ms Marple and Poirot are his favorites
He saw murder on the orient express when he was little and it was a really big inspiration for him and it really started his love for mysteries.
wowowowowow. is udo’s mom a self insert of myself in these? absolutely. clue has been my favorite movie since i was a teen so seeing it mentioned had me STOKED.

Angst no. 41 (the viewers everytime Dalisay fails to die)
#41. Angst: “No, not again. Please!”
I'll make my own spin here---Levi and Hange are watching Cardo Dalisay, the vigilante extraordinaire from the mountains, on TV. Hilarious angst (what the heck is that?) ensues.
Prompt list (pick a prompt with your fave ship and send it to me; I’ll write something about it)
---------------------
It's Friday after a long week of work, thick blankets and a hot choco kind of night, and Hange's propped on the couch while snacking on some popcorn, the TV playing in front of her.
"What the fuck are you watching?"
Levi has entered their room, confused at the fact that Hange's eyes are glued to the screen---probably for the first time since... forever?
"Just some action series I found on this channel." She munches some popcorn. "Got me hooked on the first season, and now I'm already halfway through!"
The opening credits of the next episode start with some poorly-done CGIs of the protagonist jumping off a building before said building gets blown up, flash forward to some highly-exaggerated fighting scenes where one punch from Cardo, the vigilante extraordinaire, knocks out this huge evil henchman in front of him. It's a pathetic stunt; in reality, that blow would have broken his teeny-tiny wrist. But the director didn't want that, Levi supposes; Cardo Dalisay would have been recuperating in the hospital for weeks. There would be no show without him.
Levi shrugs his shoulder and grabs some popcorn. "Looks like shit to me."
Nevertheless, he sits beside Hange, slings one arm around her while Hange lifts up the blanket high enough for both of them to snuggle underneath.
The show doesn't really interest him, really. It's Hange's reaction to it that does. Hange's eyes widen at every kick, every punch that Cardo lands at his enemies, eyebrows furrowed each time he narrowly escapes a blow.
"This guy," Hange explains, pointing her foot towards the face of Coco Martin on TV, "he used to have a twin brother who died so he avenged him and then Cardo, he's the main character, in case you haven't figured it out, gets involved with drugs and the police, but he's innocent and now he's on the run with his wife and a couple of military-people-turned-rebels---oh, shit, no!"
The main nemesis of the season shoots Cardo Dalisay right on the chest. The protagonist drops dead in the water, his body floating in the middle of the lake, and then it's a cliffhanger. Hange's face is in pure horror, like she hasn't expected this plot twist at all.
"Don't die. Survive!" Hange shouts with all the eagerness in her voice.
The popcorn merely falls out of Levi's mouth as he stares at Hange, dumbfounded. It's his motherfucking line.
"Don't tell me this is what you've been binge-watching lately. A dweeb can do better CGIs than this..." he gestures towards the screen, and thinks of the first word that comes to mind. "Shitshow."
Hange doesn't respond, but merely plays the next episode she has recorded.
Apparently, Cardo Dalisay has escaped death that time and is back for some action-packed scenes ("I knew it! Somebody found him and nursed him back to health!" Hange cheers). Little does Levi know, it's the first of many, the almost-but-not-quite "deaths." A hostage is now tied up high in the air, but Levi can still see the stupid green screen behind them like a badly photoshopped meme. Hange, however, is thoroughly engrossed.
All the death-defying scenes happen one after the other, and Levi is forced to watch, cringing. Well, because Hange would end up staying all night and wouldn't probably wake up to run some errands in the morning. He'd rather make sure she gets to bed by 1 am, at the very latest. The two of them are partners-in-crime in this household.
The next episode cuts to Cardo Dalisay hanging for dear life with one gun in hand while he's being rained down by bullets from above. Said enemies, trained assassins are they are, miss all their firing shots at him, and Cardo Dalisay miraculously escapes without a single scrape in his body.
"This doesn't make sense," he complains to Hange who's fanning herself from the adrenaline rush. Levi continues, "Nothing does in this show. Did the producers even study the laws of physics?"
Hange looks at him, curious.
"What?"
"Nothing."
She continues watching. The fact that she majored in Physics and aced all her classes in college baffles him all the more.
Cardo Dalisay dies the nth time by being shot (again). About time, Levi thinks. And then Cardo's wife Alyana wakes up with Cardo right beside her, completely unharmed. It had all been a dream.
"This guy seriously has one hell of a plot armor."
"I know! It's so cool, right?" Hange says, and he doesn't know if she's being ironic or not. "I've been so attached to his character, kinda reminds me of you."
"I can do so much better than him." He crosses his arms and slumps back into the couch. Levi has had enough of plot armors so thick nothing could penetrate the person.
"Maybe you can audition and then ask if you can replace his titular role," Hange teases him before putting all her attention to the ongoing episode. "Apparently, it's been running since 2015."
He counts the years with his fingers. "Shit, for real? It's fucking 2021."
The hours go by so slow, and Levi's back is already hurting from sitting on the couch this whole time. They're coming to the end of the last season, and he's trying his best to blink away the sleep from his eyes. He does wake up, though, when Cardo Dalisay gets repeatedly shot and stabbed by his archenemy in the most gruesome episode to date.
“No, not again. Please!” Hange shouts, fists clenching the blanket too tightly.
Please what? Please come back? Or please die this time?
Cardo Dalisay is vomitting blood on the floor and Hange is crying.
"Alright, that's it.” He stands up. “If this guy comes back alive in the next season, I'm---"
Hange grabs hold of his shirt and cries. Not a crybaby kind of cry. But a serious, I-swear-it-is-real kind of cry. Cardo Dalisay remains dead. Bad guy celebrates, laughing in triumph. The rest of the characters mourn. So does Hange. And Levi, tough guy as he is, doesn't have the heart to make fun of her when she cries.
"I can't, I can't," Hange sobs, as the ending credits roll. "I can't deal with deaths anymore."
"Oi, Hange. It's alright."
He looks at the clock and it's already past 1 am. After turning the TV off, he carries Hange to bed and tucks both of them in, wrapping his arms around her as they settle into sleep together.
Hange curls up closer to him and, being the longer-legged person between the two of them, hooks her leg on his thigh. "Levi..."
"Hm?" He cracks one eye open.
"I'm just glad you're still here."
He pulls her towards him, right where his heart is, and he's sure that Hange is listening to the thumping of his heartbeat. So much for heroes, he thinks. He's thankful enough he doesn't have to act like one to be one in Hange's eyes. He hopes the story doesn't end there.
A few episodes later, the scene zooms in to Cardo Dalisay on a hospital bed, severely injured but nevertheless, alive.

fuck that ! im gonna talk about them deadboyz!! shame is for the WEAK
overall:
belong to a much less known subsidiary company of jinhit no jgs isn’t worth the joke entertainment. if they were in any other company they would be super rookies but jgs is keeping them in the basement and it’s not even his own basement
initially i think there were some high stakes in it for jgy...? something like ‘you produce the songs and make their chores and if you flop you’ll never be on stage again’ but?? i don’t know now tbh
would have been really popular (they are Good) but less known company, etc, and also some rumors around the time of their debut made it so they’re only knows because ‘they’re kinda good at dancing aren’t they’
general concept is uh... cool dudes, kinda fucky but not too much...? gotta think about the baby (a-yu)
THE MEMBERS: meng yao (leader, main dancer, vocalist), wen chao (oldest, main rapper), su she (main vocal, dancer), xue yang (rapper, dancer, unofficially: moodmaker, if by ‘mood’ you understand ‘horror at whatever has just come out of his hellish mouth), wen ning (dancer, vocalist, sometimes rapper), mo xuanyu (vocalist, the Baby™)
MENG YAO:
leader, single-handedly responsible for making these rowdy boys (wc&xy) stop wanting to kill each other
has probably auditioned for every single company there is. was in the nie company for a bit, but it was still a mess freshly after the previous owner, nmj’s father, has died, nmj has struggled (being a producer, not a businessman) so when it turned out they’d have to let some trainees go, the other trainees made it so meng yao was the one to leave. then he temporarily was at wrh’s company where he got kind-of-semi-famous as one of wen qing’s main back dancers (the one she’s interacted with the most) during her last performance. then the company went kaputt and jgs has snatched him off for himself, and then... put him... in the basement.... for two years... after which he gave him a chance, and voila
insanely hard-working. an all-rounder. mainly he excels at dancing, but his vocal and rap skills also Fuck. persona? impeccable. he’s learning to write and compose his own songs and he’s doing well, but he can’t even upload his stuff on soundcloud, because... you know why. has doubled as a manager in their early days. also, dimples.
the fans had tried to make a dad/mom dynamic with him and uh... wen chao...? since they were the oldest and pretty much the opposites, but quickly gave up and he’s now simply known as yao-ge due to his stern but loving persona. (yao-jie, sometimes)
DOES do the split. it was his rookie trick for a year after they debuted, but he simply is just like that. one show host asked him “is there definite proof that you have bones?“ and meng yao only shrugged humbly
WEN CHAO
oldest, has been a trainee for the longest time, hasn’t debuted because... well... he wasn’t good... and that was because he’s felt too safe in his dad’s company. WELL ABOUT THAT,
his older brother wen xu has debuted Long before him, but after a few years his group disbanded, he moved on to modeling and then stopped after a couple of years, too. (he got married.)
you know how i said their image is ‘cool, a bit fucky’? well, he’s 40% of that fuckiness. he’s been told again and again that idols aren’t supposed to date/have dating experience, but he still can’t get the hang of it
yes, he and jiaojiao were an item back in the wen days. she’s a trainee at some other company now but they still hook up sometimes
initially was intent on maintaining a cool, calm and collected image... then he met xue yang and threw that idea outta the window. paradoxically, they’re interesting together, not only as rappers but also as... high-energy, chaotic energy makers of the group...
this is a happy au, so: initially he’s thought everything is bullshit, these talentless fucks are dumb and he should already be a top idol. by the time of their debut, he agrees that meng yao is one crafty motherfucker. a year after their debut, if anything happened to any of his boys, yes even xue yang, he would kill everyone in the room, etc, etc BUT YOU’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW ABOUT THAT.
SU SHE
unfortunately, was added before their first comeback (second release) and therefore controversial. fortunately, his vocal completes the group’s image and musical flavour
was a trainee in yinshen ent where he really admired their top idol, lan wangji, until... he got to know him (?) when they were sent to compete in a survival show and decided lan wangji ain’t shit and is, in fact, a stuck-up self-centered bitch. the survival show crashed (unrelatedly), but still some serious words were exchanged. during Some Company Problems, quite a lot of trainees have left, but he was the one who left with a Bang.
joined that one subsidiary of jin ent because of meng yao, who, just like in canon, recognized him, said he loved him in (song he’s performed in the survival show) and with this he cemented his position as su she’s new Boy Who Makes Him Go !!!!.
slowly replaced meng yao as The Man Who Does This Face at the other lads’ rowdy behaviour.
fans remember he was :/ at lan wangji, so his persona wouldn’t work anyway, but he does make quite a convincing kind dude-next-door.
stubborn side of the fandom’s next candidate for the mom member, because... he’s ridiculously prepared and reliable. who carries hydrogen peroxide in their daily use backpack? this boy !
it used to be rubbing alcohol but i had too many reasons to apply it internally, he once says mournfully, and this is how xue yang discovers he has a sense of humor, sort of
unfortunately, has the juiciest ass in the group. unfortunately, because
XUE YANG
responsible for: being inappropriate. the other 60% of fuckiness, really enjoys getting into wen chao’s personal space (since wen chao is That straight dude) and just... doing whatever to make su she Scandalized.
but he’s so cute we’ll forgive him. at least until the next time he does a surprise butt grab
very agile! dance line along with meng yao and wen ning. apparently he was a stunt guy...? apparently the lived in the streets...? apparently he went to the same dance school as meng yao...? no one knows his past. no one has seen his kid photos. did he go by another name...? insert the what are birds gif but make it who is xue yang.
adds sound effects to real life. also in his raps, sometimes
started hugging and initiating physical contact with people to assert dominance to be annoying, but ended up actually liking it, even though the one he does it comfortably with is meng yao. just like... back hugs? resting his chin over a-yao’s shoulder? it’s neat. sometimes a-yao pats his hand or taps his nose absent-mindedly and it’s super neat. if he notices you noticing it, though, he will BITE
most popular member, but everyone likes him for different reasons and has a different uhhh headcanon about potentially dating him. bad boy xue yang/cute bratty didi xue yang/sweet boyfriend xue yang, etc, etc
no one knows how, but apparently he knows the iconic duo from a small company, xiao xingchen and song lan...? or rather, song lan pretends not to know or notice him, meanwhile xiao xingchen is very cute when they’re interacting, and basically it prompts a lot of dating rumors, especially since they’ve been spotted having hotpot.
WEN NING
su she was the one to join last, but actually it’s wen ning who’s the least popular member. i’m just so quiet that people don’t notice me, haha, he says while being 180cm tall and having killer charisma when he dances
seriously, what’s up with that? it’s almost like he’s a different person, a possessed one to add to that. huh!
in contrast, his voice is very gentle and even cute, and he often sings quietly to himself. sometimes to other members (there’s a video of him singing what seems to be a lullaby to mxy), sometimes to little animals (there’s a video of him singing to a tiny frog he’s found during a walk). gentle boyfriend wen ning but it’s CANON
in contrast to the contrast, he doesn’t rap often, but when he does, it’s like... who’s that?? another member??? dualism king
when wc/xy cause problems on purpose, he doesn’t react/allows them to tease him/slap his ass/bump into him when they’re fighting. he seems like a calm, gentle guy so when they’re in a variety show and it’s Time For A Punishment, of course he gets to decide/wield the squeaky hammer, WHEREUPON ‘yang-ge, three weeks ago you ate my yoghurt even though i specifically asked you not to, so...’ (whacks xy’s ass into next tuesday)
nice, sculpted shoulders make for very good pillows
MO XUANYU
a Baby, but watch out: a horny one. fully on board with xue yang’s Inappropriate Ideas Of Entertainment. there’s a video of them doing some Rather Dirty dance moves while meng yao and su she make pained faces in the bg
fashion king. make-up king. none of his selfies are bare-faced, he always has some red eye shadow/blue eyelashes/yellow blush/black lipstick going on. sometimes even at the same time. paints his nails and toenails as well. somehow yao-gege doing his make-up makes him fall asleep one minute in. (cute)
his sincere smile is a 100% foolproof way to just... melt everyone’s hearts. in wen ning’s case: with a smile as well. meng yao and su she: an eyeroll (fond). xue yang and wen chao: ‘oh, fuck you’. but it DOES
most of the time though when he does sajiao it’s totally weird. (on purpose, on purpose)
tiny boy. skinny boy. once he turned to the side and vanished. even though most of the time in videos the other members sooner or later end up giving him food! (at some point wen chao says ‘it’s so that you’d shut up’, causing a-yu to start talking animatedly, spitting crumbs into his tea. serves him right)
has a potential to end up as a vocal god. currently however his favourite method of doing things with his voice is SCREAM
famously examines what things are by putting them in his mouth/licking them. he is a little creacher. he cannot change this
bites
#shut up shrimp#ye..lls.........#some other time i'll have to write about what the other dudes are doing in this au#idol au

The First Purge (2018)
Genre: Horror/Action
Who’s In It: Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Mugga, Marisa Tomei, Luna Lauren Velez
Who Directed It: Gerard McMurray
Plot: America's third political party, the New Founding Fathers of America, comes to power and conducts an experiment: no laws for 12 hours on Staten Island. No one has to stay on the island, but $5,000 is given to anyone who does.
Running Time: 97 Minutes
IMDB Score: 5.2
Metascore: 54
Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics 56% Audience 27%
Why I Watched It: Saw the first three so I had no choice.
How I Watched It: Netflix Canada
Random Thoughts: This films got some interesting and downright confusing numbers critics liked the 4th installment of a horror franchise more than the audience did, wow. One of the reasons I put all the % and numbers I can is to show a board scope of opinions, take them for what you will but I like data.
The Purge has been kind of different cause I think for me as it’s gone on it’s less horror and more action, they’re really siege movies now but they’ve done a good job of making the films different. With that being said I’m not a huge fan of prequels, every film that has ever been made could have a prequel, now my main argument is if what happened before was so great you would have told that story. That’s just me. I also find this franchise is a mixed bag, the best one for me is the second one, it’s very good, the first one is flawed and kind of boring. The third is too political for it’s own good and gets bogged down in that. I will say I’m sad Frank Grillo is gone, he was the best parts of 2 and 3. I should also say I have not watch the series, not the biggest TV guy anymore.
What I Liked: So we get a history lesson, we get the set up the origin story if you will and I will say it’s decent they move along well and they set things up really well. It’s almost backwards world building but they do it to set up this story and that’s the best thing with the film they tell this story it’s not all fore shadowing and telling us story stuff we know already happened. The one thing The Purge franchise has nailed is tone, they’re all creepy and the tension is almost built in, you feel the fear of the characters Without a doubt this is basically a siege movie and it’s a decent one, I love a good siege movie and I do like they set up the characters and the neighborhood it does feel like a community. What they’ve done is kind of copied the first one but instead of focusing on one house they focused on this one neighborhood.
The cast is fine mostly a unknown cast the biggest name in it is Marisa Tomei and she feels like she shouldn’t be there and she’s not it in that much. The cast does a good job and they play off each other well. The action and tension are solid they do a good job of spreading out the cast so we have different people in different places till the finale.
What I Didn’t Like: It’s too long and the pacing is hurt cause the set shouldn’t be this long as we know what’s going to happen. I get it’s the first time for these people but this is the 4th movie I’ve seen and it does feel I have to wait for the movie to catch-up. My main beef with the film is that they don’t do anything new, this is now well worn ground, 4th movie and a series you need a better hook then what they have here. All they have to hang their hat on is “This is How it All Began” it’s something but not enough. It also beats the same drum at times, the bad guys are the same and honestly the film is fun enough but nothing new or shocking happens.
So yes Marisa Tomei not only feels miscast but seems like she doesn’t need to be there and at about the half way point they get rid of her, she’s a very good actress but they didn’t need her for this role and one could argue they didn’t need this character cause they didn’t use the character very well.
For a prequel I will say it’s decent enough but what I dislike about prequels is present here, we know it doesn’t matter what happens, if this group of people survive we know they don’t stop the purge, so that kind of bothered me.
Final Thoughts: I liked it more than I thought and I think it’s a better action movie than a horror film, the action is well shot and I got into it.
Rating: 6/10

Why Resident Evil Village’s Vampire Lady Could Be the Game’s Most Interesting Character
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
When Resident Evil Village releases later this year, it’ll have the tough job of following up one of the best survival horror games released in the last decade: Resident Evil 7. While clearly inspired by innovative classics that came before like Amnesia, Outlast, and Hideo Kojima’s P.T. demo, Capcom did its own thing with its first-person horror thriller, introducing fans to a gruesome new bioweapon and new protagonist Ethan, a character very unlike the gun-toting STARS and Umbrella agents from the franchise’s past. The result was a hell of a ride full of scares, dismemberments, and more than a few twists, as its surprise tale of espionage and coverups unfolded in the final act.
Capcom’s sequel to Ethan’s story picks up after the events at the Baker estate. Based on the trailers released so far, when Resident Evil Village begins, Ethan and Mia have been reunited and are living in relative peace until Chris Redfield shows up and turns Ethan’s life upside down once again. Suddenly, Ethan finds himself in the game’s titular village, which looks very similar to the one infested by the Las Plagas parasite in Resident Evil 4. But this village doesn’t seem to be populated by mind-controlled Ganados or hungry zombies. Instead, Resident Evil Village will introduce werewolves and, more intriguingly, vampires to the Resident Evil universe.

In fact, the franchise’s first vampiric character has already caused quite the stir on Twitter. Revealed in a brief teaser promoting today’s Resident Evil Village digital showcase at 5 pm ET, the new character is an incredibly tall woman in a fancy hat who towers above Ethan and her much more grotesque vampiric minions. In just a matter of days the “Vampire Lady” or “Tall Lady,” who remains nameless at the moment, became an obsession for the Resident Evil community. Fan art and memes quickly followed:

While little is known about the character — it’s easy to speculate that she’s one of the boss villains you’ll encounter in the game — it’s not all that surprising that “Tall Vampire Lady” has stolen the show from more legacy characters like Chris Redfield or even the aforementioned werewolf. When she arrives in the game, Vampire Lady will be the first enemy of her kind in the Resident Evil franchise, which has largely dabbled in zombies, viruses, and the threat of bioweapons up until this point. But with Village, Capcom is clearly looking to folklore and the classic monsters we normally associate with horror.
It’s not the first time Capcom has experimented with classic horror monsters, either. The studio famously tried to incorporate a recurring ghost-like enemy known as the Hook Man in Resident Evil 4 before eventually pulling him from the final product. Village, which, again, resembles Resi 4 in terms of its setting, could be a way for Capcom to revisit more traditional horror concepts. And if the point of main Resi sequels going forward is for each new installment to stand apart in some way from the others — Resident Evil 7 introduced a first-person perspective to the series, for example — then including vampires and werewolves in Village is an interesting way to do it.
The game that inspired the Resident Evil series, Capcom’s Sweet Home, featured zombies, ghosts, and killer dolls (another classic monster), but in much more overt and campy ways. Is Village really going to establish that vampires have been running around all along and have simply stayed away from all of the zombie shenanigans this long?
Like Mr. X, Nemesis, Albert Wesker, and Eveline before her, Vampire Lady could very well be the result of experiments with a new bioweapon Ethan and Chris need to shut down before the world is covered in bloodsuckers and savage wolfmen. No matter how outlandish the creature — and Resi has featured plenty of them — the franchise has always found a way to tie its origin back to some sort of unethical scientific experiment.
In Resident Evil 7, The Connections takes the place of Umbrella as the evil organization behind all of the terrible events in the game. (Meanwhile, a new Umbrella, known as “Blue Umbrella,” is ironically leading the charge against bioweapons research.) It’s very possible The Connections has a new plan to turn people into bio-engineered vampires and werewolves.
Either way, if Capcom hoped that a vampire would get people excited for Village, the studio certainly got what it wanted. Mind you, some fans are more interested in Vampire Lady’s…physical appearance and height in comparison to them than what her arrival might mean for the franchise’s lore going forward, but I’m not here to judge.

Favorite Albums of 2019
2019 was a big year for me in music. According to my Last.FM stats, it’s the most music I’ve listened to in one year. That played a big role in why I have a top 50 albums list for the year. There was a lot of stuff I really enjoyed.
I tried to find new bands this year because I’m over 30 now which they say is around the time you stop seeking new music and I want to prove that wrong. 14 out of my top 50 were brand new artists to me, which I wish was higher, but that’s a goal for next year now.
I also reignited my love for some bands. I got really into the Go-Betweens in 2019. I bought a documentary about them, a book about the two founders of the band, and got a box set of their last three albums that is now one of most prized music possessions. I also found some Deerhunter records in Nashville that I listened to quite a bit. I also got to see them live this year which was a real treat. Other artists I got really into this year was Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Bombay Bicycle Club, Chris Isaak, Hightide Hotel, The Brave Little Abacus and Titus Andronicus (who I was already into, but got almost all of their albums on vinyl now).
It was another terrific year for live shows as well, as I got to see a lot of artists I loved as well as ones on my bucket list. Kacey Musgraves, Sharon Van Etten, Priests, mewithoutyou (2nd time), Tigers Jaw, Titus Andronicus (2nd Time), Angel Olsen (3rd Time), Deerhunter, Trampled by Turtles, and Miami Horror. The best month was late April to late May when I got to go to five amazing but very different shows. It was one of the most fun months of my life. I got to see the Drums (2nd Time), PUP, Ratboys, Doomsquad, Operators, Desire, Chromatics, and Passion Pit! All of them were some of the best shows I’ve ever been to.
Now enough about my music year, let’s get to the list. I only wrote things about the top 30 but wanted to highlight some other ones so expanded the list to 50. Like I mentioned earlier, it was a really great year of music. Not sure if I will release a list of favorite songs this year, but we’ll see. I’ve lately become more of an album fan instead of singles. Let me know what you checked out this year!
50. Chromatics – Closer to Grey
49. Hatchie – Keepsake
48. Nilufer Yana – Miss Universe
47. Denzel Curry - ZUU
46. Pedro the Lion - Phoenix
45. Proper. - I Spent the Winter Writing Songs About Getting Better
44. Turnover – Altogether
43. Jay Som – Anak Ko
42. Big Thief – Two Hands
41. Jimmy Eat World - Surviving
40. Titus Andronicus – An Obelisk
39. The National – I Am Easy to Find
38. Priests – Seduction of Kansas
37. DIIV – Deceiver
36. Mildura - Mildura
35. Jamila Woods – LEGACY! LEGACY!
34. Doomsquad – Let Yourself Be Seen
33. Charly Bliss – Young Enough
32. Operators – Radiant Dawn
31. Black Marble – Bigger Than Life
30. The Get Up Kids – Problems
I was late on the Get Up Kids (I know, I know, I’ll turn in my emo card after this article), and I’ve been trying to catch-up these past couple years. And what perfect timing because it’s the first album in eight years (They also had a terrific EP in 2018). It’s a really good return album from them. They can still write amazing pop punk anthems, and few bands leave songs stuck in my head as often as the Get Up Kids do. It’s interesting that the early wave of emo are now elder statesmen of the scene and they touch on that a little in this album. Reflecting on the past and what it means to be a band in 2019. It’s always good to see a band not only not just rely on nostalgia to tour on, but still release relevant music that stands up with some of their best material.
Favorite Track: Satellite
29. Bon Iver – i,i
It’s interesting where Bon Iver has gone in the past decade. First bursting on the scene with the perfect story of going to a cabin and recording a heartbreaking breakup album. Since then he’s won some Grammys, been featured on Kanye West songs, and embraced the synthesizer. For some reason, however, this album reminds me more of “For Emma, Forever Go” than his previous couple albums despite still using the more electronic approach. It has that same raw honesty that his debut had. He’s not alone in the woods anymore. He’s commanding a large group of musicians now, creating this huge sound without losing any of his heart. He also sounds more assured in himself. It’s seems like the beginning of a new era for Justin Vernon and the last song “RABi” sounds like his “riding off into the sunset” moment. Awaiting the next adventure.
Favorite Track: Faith
28. Yola – Walk Through Fire
A really strong debut album from singer/songwriter Yola. It’s really soothing with a nice wall of sound production that just sweeps you away. It also helps that she has such an amazing voice. Songs like “Faraway Look” & “Lonely the Night” feel like songs I’ve known my entire life, but was just waiting for Yola to record them. Really excited to see what she does next.
Favorite Track: Lonely the Night
27. Prince Daddy & the Hyena – Cosmic Thrill Seekers
“Cosmic Thrill Seekers” is an ambitious album, like “The Monitor” level of ambitious. It’s written almost entirely by Kory Gregory about his cycles of struggling with mental health with allusions to Wizard of Oz. They take you on a journey on this album. The feelings of self-destruction, to wanting to escape from people who aren’t even your friends, and not quite fitting in with rest of the world while also playing the most anthemic guitar riffs and crashing cymbals. I can only imaging what the experience is like seeing this album performed live. It would have to feel like a sonic tornado, and you would wonder what just happened after you’re walking away on the street. This album didn’t make it number one on any charts, but this album is going to mean so much to so many people. Also, the last track goes right back into the first one to begin the cycle again.
Favorite Track: Lauren (Track 2)
26. Strange Ranger – Remembering the Rockets
It’s amazing how much this album reminds me of 90’s indie rock. It is so easy to picture Strange Ranger playing this album in between sets of Mazzy Star and Teenage Fanclub. I had not really clicked with Strange Ranger’s earlier stuff, but this album just seemed to make sense to me. It sounds like a fully formed album with a band that is confident enough to be more adventurous. There are some incredibly poppy hooks, but also some interesting synth beat choices. Also the switch of singing songs about the end of the world to being excited to go on a date gives the album a little extra something. A good mixture of despair and hope.
Favorite Track: Leona
25. Lost Under Heaven – Love Hates What You’ve Become
I love when a band just says “F*** It! Let’s make songs meant to be heard in a stadium,” even though they will never get a chance to. This is one of those albums that is meant to be turned all the way up with you screaming along to every chorus in your car. They are definitely wearing their hearts on their sleeve on this one, encouraging you be the best version of ourselves so by the time the album reaches it’s colossal closer “For the Wild,” you are ready to take on the world. It’s fun when a band decides to be super sincere on an album. You actually feel like rock and roll will save us, just like you did when you were a teenager and first found music for yourself.
Favorite Track: For the Wild
24. Mark Ronson – Late Night Feelings
I think my favorite thing about a Mark Ronson record is how much they seem like an awesome compilation album, and this one lives up to its name and is a perfect soundtrack for late night out on the town. He’s got a great ear for collaborators creating the perfect songs to best suit their voices. Lykke Li, Angel Olsen, Alicia Keys, and even Miley Cyrus have some terrific showings on this record. There’s no super hit like “Uptown Funk” on this album, but it is a fun listening experience, and I cannot get enough of Angel Olsen’s “True Blue” on here (Which really should have ended the album. It’s a perfect end credits song).
Favorite Track: True Blue
23. The Drums – Brutalism
The Drums are a group that has had quite a decade. They’ve released four albums, and every member but Johnny has left the group. “Brutalism,” however, is still a strong album in one of the best indie rock discographies of the past 20 years. There are some throwback songs to the early Drums days (Body Chemistry), a rare acoustic ballad (Nervous), and one of the catchiest songs they’ve ever written (626 Bedford Ave). The Drums get overlooked, but they’ve quietly created an impressive catalogue that is just begging to be reevaluated with “Brutalism“ adding a lot to that conversation. Not many indie rock bands make it to five albums, let alone having songs on that fifth album that fit along their biggest hits.
Favorite Track: 626 Bedford Ave.
22. Brittany Howard – Jaime
When I first heard this album was coming out, I thought it meant that Alabama Shakes were done as a band and Brittany was going to be an exclusively solo artist now. However, after listening to this album, I understand why it was not an Alabama Shakes record. This is a very personal record that just wouldn’t sound right as a band collaboration. This is Brittany’s story. She’s singing about life on the road, her faith, first crushes, family, and making sense of what it’s like growing up in the south. This solo record also gave her a chance to explore some different sounds than she would have on an Alabama Shakes record. You can hear some Prince influence, especially on the final track “Run to Me.” Not sure if she plans to release more solo records, but I hope this isn’t the last.
Favorite Track: History Repeats
21. (Sandy) Alex G – House of Sugar
“House of Sugar” has probably got my favorite Side A of any record this year. It just gives a chance to showcase what I love about (Sandy) Alex G so much. You’ve got the psychedelic drone style and that fast almost folk-punk style. It’s just filled with this fun eclectic sound and his voice, while probably viewed as limited in sense of range, just captures so much emotion in the music. I found this record to be one that rewards you the most the more you listen to it. I feel like I’m always discovering something new with each listen. I always enjoy checking out the latest (Sandy) Alex G record because his albums are always adventurous, and “House of Sugar” is definitely that. I would have a tough time describing this album. It’s like when you’re in a dream and there are those moments that completely change the scenario and location, but for some reason it makes sense to you in a way you can’t explain. That’s what this album is like for me.
Favorite Track: Gretal
20. Angel Olsen – All Mirrors
If I had to describe this album, I would say it’s Angel Olsen’s “Nebraska” if she had Bauhaus as her backing band. This is a big sounding record, and it’s easy to let the emotional crescendos take you away. You feel every emotion she’s putting on this record, and it is a wild ride. It’s a breakup record, and this album does a good job of capturing that feeling fresh off a breakup that just feels like a tornado of feelings. It’s a storm of emotions, but sometimes there’s a beauty in a storm as well. She said there’s an acoustic version of this album that will come out next year, but I’m glad we got to hear this version first. We get to feel the real raw emotion on this, and then when more time has passed a chance to be softer with a more reflective look back.
Favorite track: All Mirrors
19. billy woods + kenny segal – Hiding Places
It really sounds like Woods is letting it all out on this album; frustrations with music, other people, the current state of things, and his intensity is only amplified by the beats from Kenny Segal. The samples on this album are not catchy, and they shouldn’t be. This is an album that wants you to reckon with what Woods is saying. That’s what makes the final album so impressive. It’s a perfect blend between Wood’s lyrics and Segal’s beats. Complimenting each other in frustration and uneasiness. I was not familiar with either artists before this album, but I’m definitely a fan now, and I hope they will collaborate again in the near future.
Favorite Track: Red Dust
18. Truth Club – Not an Exit
There is something very old school about Truth Club. They’ve got this post-punk nasty guitar riff energy that just make this an album a delight to hear. They sound like a band with something to prove, delivering exactly what you want from a post-punk record. Sweet riffs, monotone vocals, and done in less than a half-hour. Love it.
Favorite Track: Student Housing
17. Helado Negro – This is How You Smile
Sometimes records just feel like a dream as if you can just see the music and travel in it. That’s how I feel every time I listen to “This is How you Smile.” The mixture of electronic and folk makes such beautiful music and Roberto Carlos Lange’s voice is perfect on top of these amazing collections of sound. Apparently he invited a lot of different musicians to play on this record and it really sounds like a group of friends got together and had the perfect jam with Lange’s artistic vision taking the lead. Some songs tackle today’s issues with even some field recordings from an Abolish ICE March in Brooklyn and singing about being proud of being Latinx, but not being confrontational about it. It’s beautiful music with a message.
Favorite Track: Please Won’t Please
16. Deerhunter - Why Hasn't Everything Already Disappeared?
You’ve got to give credit to Deerhunter for continuing to make really interesting albums throughout all of the 2010s, and this one seems like a good one to end the decade with. When so many of their contemporaries have disbanded or walked away from music, Deerhunter has kept going. Not resting on their past success, but creating new sounds and challenging their audience to go somewhere new with them. They can still write an amazing hook and the lyrics are as sharp as any previous album. It’s an ode to a world that seems to be on the brink of destruction by its own design.
Favorite Track: Plains
15. Anderson Paak – Ventura
Anderson Paak is on quite a creative streak with this being his fourth album in five years and I think this one may be my favorite. He’s got some amazing guests singers on this album including Andre 3000, Brandy, and the legendary Smokey Robinson. It just sounds terrific too. The 70’s soul-funk inspiration makes for some of the best grooves I’ve heard this year, and it’s a perfect album for a night drive.
Favorite Track: Jet Black
14. PUP – Morbid Stuff
Few bands do “ANGER” as good as PUP, but Morbid Stuff is not the typical angry record either. It’s like “I’m angry. You’re angry. Let’s be angry together” kind of record which is perfect for the general attitude of 2019. PUP inspires a real passionate fan base, and on this record it’s easy to see why. They packed it with cathartic anthems for the disenfranchised. Not getting along with your family? Not quite over your ex? Feel like you missed that turn you were supposed to take in life about four years ago? Get over here and let all that anger out by singing along with us. This album is community even though you can’t be with this group in person. It also helps that this is a band that can PLAY. The musicianship is just fantastic which is probably helped because this is a band. These four guys have been PUP since the beginning and they sound better and better on each album. So let’s get angry!
Favorite Track: Kids
13. Raphael Saadiq – Jimmy Lee
It’s been eight years since the last Raphael Saadiq album, and it’s understandable because this album is dealing with a lot of heavy issues; addiction, incarceration, faith, and losing family. It’s also an album that Raphael Saadiq could have only made after being a bit older with some life wisdom to look back at. Sometimes it can be uncomfortable to listen to, but also necessary. It feels like a very personal album, and you can tell how much work must have been put into producing it. The album sounds terrific, which makes sense for how much experience he’s had producing other projects in-between albums. I also forget how talented of a singer he is. This album is a real showcase of his vocal skills. Some songs sound like he’s pouring his soul into it, and just somehow keeping his voice from breaking. You get swept up in that anger he feels. This album will make you really think about where the world has been, where it’s at today, and where it’s going. A powerful and necessary album for 2019.
Favorite Track: Rearview
12. Orville Peck – Pony
Orville Peck’s music is the kind of music that would sound just as perfect being performed on stage at the Grand Ole Opry as it would hearing it off a jukebox in a dive bar in the middle of nowhere. Peck’s really tapped into that timeless country sound that just seems to sounds good anywhere in any situation. Feeling sad? Perfect. Feeling that freedom you get from just hitting the road alone? Perfect. That baritone voice is so beautiful to listen to as well. It’s a new generations Roy Orbison or Chris Isaak. Beautiful but haunting, and it wouldn’t sound out of place in a David Lynch film. The storytelling in the lyrics are also astounding. I can picture the desert riding while listening to “Dead of Night.” It’s fascinating to know that this is Peck’s first album because it’s so well formed in terms of lyrics, vocals, and hooks. Makes me even more excited for what the next album will sound like.
Favorite Track: Dead of Night
11. Great Grandpa – Four of Arrows
“Four of Arrows” sounds like a level up album from Great Grandpa after their terrific debut “Plastic Cough.” It’s a great example of a band expanding their sound without losing the identity that made their first album special. The band sounds tighter, richer (especially with the addition of strings and synths on some songs), and more ambitious. It also helps to have the amazing Alex Menne vocals. She really conveys an energy that escalates these songs’ emotional payoffs. Especially on a song like “Digger” where she sings (almost screams) “That’s why I hate you,” “That’s why I love you” with almost the same energy. You may not know what each song is about, but you certainly know how it feels.
Favorite Track: Treat Jar
10. Holy Ghost! – Work
Sometimes all you need is great dance album in your life, and Holy Ghost! provided that for me this year. They have a kind of style of dance music that has fallen out of critical favor by the end of this decade, but I still love to hear it. They continued the tradition of Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories” of applying their flavor to 70’s dance music, and it’s terrific fun. This album is super catchy, has wonderfully danceable grooves, and features a 7-minute plus dance closer. A perfect dance record.
Favorite track: Do This
9. American Football - American Football (LP3)
With emo revival being a big topic of conversation this past decade in certain music critics’ world, it’s only fair that one of the greatest emo bands ends the decade with a terrific album. After reuniting a couple years ago for an okay album, I’m glad they went back to studio to create an album worthy of comparison to their first album that influenced so many amazing artists. The musicianship on this album is just stunning, with a rich tapestry of melancholy permeating throughout. They also happened to create possibly the best duet of the decade by having fellow emo legend Haley Williams join them for “Uncomfortably Numb.” Just beautiful. #defendemo
Favorite Track: Uncomfortably Numb
8. oso oso – Basking in the Glow
To be honest, I feel invested in oso oso. I remember a few years back he released “the yunahon mixtape” as a pay what you want on Bandcamp and planning to walk away from music. I checked it out, and loved it on first listen. Then the album got some nice shout-outs from critics and other artists and eventually found an audience. So to see not only oso oso stick with music, but to release this terrific follow up record as well, feels like a win for everyone. There is a common misconception that emo=sad music, but this album shows that is not the case. There’s a joy on this album that is super infectious. He wants you to feel a part of his joy. It’s an album of positivity that we needed in 2019, and it helps that so many of these songs are very catchy. This is the “dance around your bedroom” kind of album, and just let yourself go for a half-hour. I’m so happy that this album is getting recognized on so many year-end lists. It feels like a win for the entire emo scene that usually gets ignored. The fact that it happened to oso oso makes it all the better.
Favorite track: The View
7. Big Thief - U.F.O.F.
I always thought of Big Thief as a perfect band for fall. Something about their music feels like the end of something before dealing with something that will be tough but necessary. That they’re the ferryman taking us into the next stage in life, and the cost is you’re going to feel a little sad listening to some heartbreaking tales. U.F.O.F., their first album of 2019, can break you down. In the first track “Contact” we hear lead singer Adrianne Lenker let out these howling screams. Giving ua permission to let yourself go. Be your most pure self as this album takes you on a journey. I don’t mean to make this album sound depressing, because even though there’re numerous allusions to death it is quite hopeful. You get to LIVE because one day you will die. It makes life more important because it has an ending. This album doesn’t have a lot of hooks on it, but it just makes it more important to listen to it as an album. It’s one big piece that feels so right together. It’s hard to imagine anyone having as creatively successful year as Big Thief did in 2019. Kind of apt they got it in right before the end of a decade. A necessary end, I think.
Favorite Track: Cattails
6. Mini Dresses – Heaven Sent
Listening to Mini Dresses’ “Heaven Sent” feels like I found some hidden album demo from the early 2000s that was secretly a masterpiece. I truly do not know why hardly anyone seems to be talking about this album. If it came out in 2008 it feels like it would have been huge on indie blogs. This album is so catchy and a style of indie rock that doesn’t seem to be big anymore, which is a shame because it’s too good to miss. This album reminds me of Blondie if they would have been part of the indie wave of the mid-2000s, which if that sounds cool to you, please check this album out.
Favorite Track: Rank and File
5. Better Oblivion Community Center – Better Oblivion Community Center
After hearing “Would You Rather” on Phoebe Bridgers’ phenomenal debut album “Stranger in the Alps,” I suppose we were all secretly hoping for more songs from Conor Oberst and Phoebe. There are few songwriters that can capture the feeling of loneliness and emptiness, but still have that sense of hope that it can somehow get better like these two can. “If you’re not feeling ready, there’s always tomorrow” on their last song “Dominos” really hits that point home. Their voices sound great together and the production on this album is fantastic. They’ve got the hooks, they’ve got the ballads, and they’re ready to make you cry, but they will be the first ones to help pick you back up. This album feels like an old friend that knows you get sad sometimes, but is always there for you when you need them.
Favorite Track: Dylan Thomas
4. glass beach – the first glass beach album
There’s nothing better than when a band just goes for it on an album. I haven’t listened to an album that has made me think of emo, Disney, Hellogoodbye, and Playstation video game soundtracks all before I’ve even made it to track 5. It’s like they threw everything on the wall and everything stuck. I would not be surprised to find out that this band is around my age. It sounds like an album that only someone who grew up in the 90’s and early 2000’s could make. Just picking sounds from everything in that era and making an album out of it. It’s pure chaos, but somehow completely makes sense. This album is not for everybody, but if it clicks with you, it’s like it’s looking into your soul.
Favorite track: cold weather
3. Slaughter Beach Dog – Safe and Also No Fear
I was a big fan of Modern Baseball, like all good emo revival fans should be, and was super sad to hear they were going on indefinite hiatus. When I heard Jake Ewald was starting a new project as Slaughter Beach Dog, I checked out some songs from his album “Birdie” but didn’t really connect with it. Probably because I wanted something more like Modern Baseball. Then when this album came out, it had some buzz from critics whose opinions on music closely line up with mine, and I checked out this album. Whatever opinion I had on the first album, this one was the exact opposite. I really connected with. Listening to it feels like those times where you visit your old hometown, driving around the old spots you used to hang out. Then you realize these spots don’t mean what they did to you anymore, and they never could. No matter how much old friends want you to be that old person again, you can’t go backwards and you’re fine with that. This is also a beautiful sounding record. It sounds like Jake let the other musicians have a bit more say in the sound, and it does sound like a band collaboration. It’s a sweet indie/folk/alternative sound that just pierces my soul. If we don’t get another Modern Baseball reunion, that’s fine. It sounds like Jake has moved on, and I’m ready to follow wherever his new music takes him.
Favorite Track: Black Oak
2. Sharon Van Etten – Remind Me Tomorrow
It’s always exciting to witness an artist make the album they were always meant to. All of her work has lead up to her masterpiece. You feel her soul on this record. Not one moment feels faked. She’s not hiding anything from the listener. Talking about letting go of your past self (I Told You Everything), making a new version of yourself (Comeback Kid), letting yourself love again (Jupiter 4), and what it’s like to be a mother (Stay). Also, on this record she embraces the synth and it makes for some tremendous production. The anthems have an extra kick to them. Not only is this a terrific album for 2019, but one of the standouts of the decade from an artist who already had an impressive discography these past ten years. I’m not sure where she will go next, but I’m hoping this is a sign of what to expect from her in the 2020s.
Favorite Track: Seventeen
1. Purple Mountains – Purple Mountains
This is my favorite album of 2019, and it’s not even close. I was not familiar with David Berman until I heard the first couple singles before the album came out. His name was one that I heard critics tweet about or referenced by other artists, but had never really checked out his music. However, after hearing “All My Happiness is Gone” and “Darkness and Cold” I could not get enough of this music. The melodies were incredibly catchy, I thought the lyrics were super memorable, and they just felt like they really connected with me. He sounded like a natural storyteller, and I was hooked on every word he said. I’m not usually a lyrics person, but I paid attention when I heard these songs. Then when the album came out, it was a treasure trove of an album that I could really dive into. This heartland country sound with a terrific backing band, Woods, complimenting David Berman’s unique voice. I loved it immediately. Then when the tragic news came out of David Berman’s passing, it hit me hard. It’s difficult to talk about this album without acknowledging David committed suicide shortly after it was released. However, I don’t think of this album as a suicide note. This really felt like an album about life. There are struggles, but there are the good moments too. Find the happiness where you can. Margaritas at the mall, that lovely connection of a child with their parent, and if the snow is falling and it’s looking bad, enjoy how warm it will be inside. Berman’s legacy will be everything he contributed to culture; his poetry, his wit, his dark humor, and especially the music. Every once in awhile now when I hear “All My Happiness is Gone” on the radio or if it comes up on a shuffled playlist, my eyes start to well up. Not because I’m sad, but because I’m happy David shared a piece of his soul with us. That’s the real power of music.

Hey have you heard these 50 songs from 2019
I really enjoyed this last year so going to give it another go for ‘19. I put quite a lot of thought into what actually a ‘song of the year’ for me when I was first constructing and then heavily editing the playlist that came to be my Top 50 of 2019. I think the most important thing is that above all it’s a track that I’m glad exists, sometimes this is because of the songwriting or composition, sometimes the performance, sometimes the lyrical importance and sometimes just because it sparks joy.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6bFJOjL8b8Zc2s5r1oJbsk?si=UJdqSXOTR3SQ8D3IwcmV2g
Explanations for each tracks inclusion below the fold…
100 gecs - 800db cloud 100 gecs channel a mix of Crystal Castles and Sleigh Bells with a Death Grips level appreciation for noise. It’s an absolute rush and that outro is just absurd.
Natalie Evans - Always Be Natalie Evans soft melody and sing song vocals are sublimely sweet on this heartfelt track of lost love, longing and nostalgia.
Petrol Girls - Big Mouth “If you fight back or disagree you’re the one with the fucking problem” this hits home, hard. Big Mouth is a rallying cry to speak out against oppression and discrimination, to raise you’re voice and be heard, not to be controlled.
Charli XCX ft. Lizzo - Blame it on your Love Charli has a midas touch when it comes to pop, combine that with Lizzo who has just about been the most fun thing in music this year and you’ve got a 10/10 banger.
Poppy - BLOODMONEY Poppy’s music just keeps going further down the rabbit hole. Originally playing with blending elements of nu-metal with bubblegum pop, she now seems to have transcended genre altogether to create whatever BLOODMONEY is, it’s absolutely ridiculous and I love it.
Body Hound - Bloom Get on that GROOVE! So proggy it hurts, this track from Body Hound is a technical wonderland of metamorphosing rhythms, gargantuan riffs, and just the tastiest of chord progressions.
Can the Sub_Bass speak - Algiers Word of warning, this is not an easy listen. A freefall tumble through genre and tone accompanies a stream of consciousness monologue full of racism, prejudice and political and artistic critique.
Elohim - Buckets Buckets is an onslaught of trap influences, emotional outbursts and aggressive distortion. I’m a big fan of this sound.
VUKOVI - C.L.A.U.D.I.A I know very little about VUKOVI as a band, but that riff is absolutely massive and this track has been a constant throughout my year on that basis alone.
Show Me The Body - Camp Orchestra Apparently more hardcore bands should use Banjos, because this is a damn good sound. Slowly building from a single bass line this track builds into a powerful demolishing force.
clipping. - Club Down Having thoroughly proven themselves able to do afro-futurist scifi on the Hugo nominated Splendor and Misery, clipping. now turn their considerable talents to horror core and unsurprisingly nail it. Daveed’s flows are tight as ever as he brings to life a decaying city backed by tortured screams.
Dream Nails - Corporate Realness YOU ARE NOT YOUR JOB. WORK IS NOT YOUR LIFE. YOU ARE NOT WHAT YOU MUST DO IN ORDER TO SURVIVE. Dream Nails are great and exactly what we need right now.
ControlTop - Covert Contracts This track positively bristles with an anxious energy. A fitting sound for the subject of the information overload we find ourselves locked into everyday.
Cherry Glazerr - Daddi There’s an icy coolness to ‘Daddi’, a disconnected sarcasm that falls away to reveal the anger and torment in the chorus, it’s a masterful bit of emotional storytelling through musical tone.
The Physics House Band - Death Sequence I Listening to Physics House latest release, the Death Sequence EP feels like a physical journey. This opener is a perfect example of this, as you’re plunged straight into a heady and disorienting mix of rhythms and counter-melody’s, the Sax guiding you through the turbulence until you land in a placid midsection, before that bass riff drags you forward through rhythmic breakdowns into an absolutely absurd brain melting saxophony and then it just keeps on going from there…
Witching Waves - Disintegration I saw WW back in the early summer, they were a bassist down so it was just a guitar and drums duo. They started with this track and it was one of the most pure punk things I’ve experienced, drummer/vocalist Emma Wigham bashing the absolute shit out of her kit . A great no-nonsense lo-fi banger.
Lingua Ignota - DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR Another, not particularly easy listen here. DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR is a dark and angry brooding track, building in intensity to release the primal rage, fear and horror of the abused. Its deeply chilling and instantly arresting. This track and the entire CALIGULA album stands as an absolute must listen.
Carly Rae Jepsen ft. Electric Guest - Feels Right I love the instrumentation on this one, those chunky piano chords and screaming guitar lift the track out and make it the highlight of an already great album to me.
Orla Gartland - Figure it out Dialing back the intensity slightly, Orla chronicles the frustrations of having to deal with someone in your life who you’re done with. The choruses burst forth in beautifully fuzzy explosions of noise. That vocal flair at the start of the final chorus is chef kiss.
Battles - Fort Greene Park Battles are at their best when they keep things simple. This is evident on 2019′s Juicy B Crypts which features some incredibly cluttered moments, but this just makes Fort Greene Park stand out all the more. A delightfully spacious piece of math rock, from some of the best in the business.
Dogleg - Fox Boy howdy, do I love me some midwest emo. Catharsis in musical form, it just makes me want to mosh my troubles away like I’m 16 again.
Tørsö - Grab A Shovel Tørsö go hard, I can appreciate that. An absolutely brutal track about the destructive power of depression and self-loathing.
“Pijn & Conjurer playing Curse These Metal Hands” - High Spirits “We were like, are we Pijn and Conjurer, or are we Curse These Metal Hands? I think we’ve settled with ‘we are Pijn and Conjurer playing Curse These Metal Hands’ …whatever that means!“ what it means is one of the most joyously triumphant pieces of metal music I’ve ever heard. Some of the guitar lines in this absolutely soar.
Lizzo - Juice Lizzo has won 2019, her message of self love, acceptance and body positivity has won her both critical and cultural acclaim and permeates her music in a way that makes it impossible to not love.
COLOSSAL SQUID, AK Patterson - Kick Punch Colossal Squid is the name given to Three Trapped Tigers drummer, Adam Betts’ experimental project. After a solo album of percussive wizardry Betts has now teamed with vocalist AK Patterson to give us something else entirely.
Evan Greer - Liberty Is A Statue Evan Greer uses the a folk punk sound to deliver an essay on the damaging influences of cis-normativity and social inequality. Of course I like this one.
Taylor Swift - Lover I wasn’t on board with this song for a fair while, but then I kept listening to it and kept coming back to it because of a roughly 50 second section which ties the track and the whole album together. Yeah, this is on here purely for the bridge, which is just beautiful.
Dodie - Monster Monster is an incredibly well written and delivered study on how perception changes with resentment and it makes me cry.
The Y Axes - Moon Moon is a delightfully dreamy piece of pop that glitters with infectious melodies, it’s lyrics a blissful embracing of cosmic nihilism, need I say more?
Ezra Furman - My Teeth Hurt My teeth hurt is a song about tooth ache, about that pain you carry with you everywhere and can’t get rid of, that ruins your days and and is one hell of a mood. Yeah it’s about gender dysphoria.
Nervus - No Nations Speaking of things being a mood, this track hits the nail squarely on the head.
Cultdreams - Not My Generation "Everyone ignores me Unless I’m on a stage talking Because they put me on a pedestal And pretend I’m just performing“ Lucinda Livingstone calls out the misogyny in our culture with a singular ferocity.
Lil Nas X - Old Town Road If there’s one song that’s dominated 2019 this is it right here. Who ever had the idea of putting that NIN Ghosts sample to a trap beat and cowboying over the top of it is an absolute genius.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Planet B It’s impossible to predict where King Gizzard’s sonic influences are going to take them next I doubt even they know half the time. Whatever they turn their hand to though they do it as if they mastered the sound decades ago Planet B is an all out thrash track with a strong environmental message.
Kesha - Rich, White, Straight Men Okay, I’m about to compare Kesha to John Lennon here but HEAR ME OUT… As ‘Imagine’ asked us to consider a world without conflict or capitalism, Kesha now posits that we should tear up our conceptions of our society based on its formation by a privileged group and imagine what kind of utopia could be built if we gave the underprivileged and minority groups a say.
Allie X - Rings A Bell The chorus here sounds like it could have been off Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, and I’m all about that sound. Combined with Allie X’s dreamlike vocals make this a certified bop.
Poly-Math - Sensors in Everything Sensors in Everything is a beast of a track spanning over 14 minutes of absurdly dense prog. Having recently enlisted keyboardist Josh Gesner. Polymath make use of the new sounds and textures available to them, at times imitating a sort of Hammond sound not unlike John Lord to the chaotic maelstrom of noise.
Calva Louise - Sleeper Big hooks on this one. Sleeper has a confident swagger to it’s sound which stands apart for the bands previous work. It’s an absolutely huge track.
Slipknot - Solway Firth Slipknot didn’t disappoint after the tease of 2018′s “All Out Life”, following up with an album which blended old and new aspects of their sound to create one of their best to date. Solway Firth is a perfect example of this matching the punishing heaviness of Iowa with the melody driven sound of All Hope Is Gone.
Clt Drp - Speak To My Seeing Clt Drp perform live was one of my highlights of the year. The filthy guitar tones, powerhouse vocals tight as heck drumming and the _grooves. _Absolutely like nothing else I’ve seen. Just an incredible band that deserve so much more recognition.
Black Country, New Road - Sunglasses Black Country, New Road released two tracks this year and now I just want more. Dense wordy lyricism plays off against ever evolving instrumentation to present a raw cut of emotional storytelling.
Her Name Is Calla - Swan Her Name Is Calla are a band that have always been on the edge of my radar, my Dad is very fond of them and saw them live a couple of years ago, but never went back to relisten to any of their stuff, then they started an album with this. I was sold instantly.
black midi - Talking Heads Talking Heads (the band) are an obvious inspiration on this track. Both David Byrne’s vocal style and the Talking Heads penchant for sharp angular melodies are on show here. But given an extra ounce of chaos through Black Midi’s delivery.
Amanda Palmer - The Ride The ride is ten minutes of bundling up all your fears and anxieties of where we are and where we’re going and just, accepting them as part of the ride. Written off the back of a prompt from Amanda asking her fans what they were afraid of right now.
Kim Petras - There Will Be Blood Okay, let’s have some out of season spookiness. Love the squelchy synths on this, there’s a huge amount of energy on this track and with it’s commitment to the horror conceit it makes for a super fun bop.
Kate Nash - Trash Kate Nash’s sound is like bathing pure nostalgia, here she spins the toxic-relationship narrative central to her work to deliver a bigger story about humanity’s, quite literally toxic relationship to our planet.
American Football & Hayley Williams - Uncomfortably Numb The other side of the “midwest emo” coin. A melancholic song built on a soft bed of arpeggiated chords and clean harmonics, Uncomfortably Numb is a heartbreaking track of losing everything and of cycles persisting thorugh generations. Employing the clever metatextual trick of referencing Pink Floyd’s comfortably Numb to mirror the generational similarities.
Glenn Branca - Velvet and Pearls Disclaimer, Glenn Branca was a musical hero of mine, his approach to music and composition being solely responsible for influence a vast number of my favourite bands. Released posthumously, Velvet and Pearls is taken from a live performance by Branca’s ensemble and perfectly captures the sense of sonic disorientation, conjuring aural illusions through an assault of intricately crafted noise. It’s an exhilarating piece that should be played as loud as humanly possible.
Brutus - War The raw emotional strength of Stefanie Manneart’s vocals instantly made me pay attention when I first heard this track. Then the song exploded into a barrage of riffs and breakneck drumming.
Valiant Vermin - Warm Coke Another slice of throwback pop, Valiant Vermin proved with “Online Lover” how much of an ear she has for pop and has proven it once again with Warm Coke. Is a real good bop.
———
Welp there it is, 50(+1) songs, I had to limit myself to one track per artist in the main 50 because according to Spotify I listened to [checks notes] 1082 new artists this year. There are a small handful of tracks I wanted to highlight from the same artists though as they offer something quite different to the tracks in the playlists, so here they are quickly with 3 word descriptions.
Petrol Girls - Skye (dead dog, sad) Amanda Palmer - Voicemail for Jill (Talk about abortion) Ezra Furman - I Wanna be Your Girlfriend (Trans Torch Song) Battles ft Jon Anderson & Prairie WWWW - Sugar Foot (Batshit Prog Insanity) Poppy - Choke (Dark Minimalist Pop) Show Me The Body - Forks and Knives (Anxious nightmare punk) Lingua Ignota - CALIGULA (the whole album.)

Closing Statement
Cultdreams - Statement
There has been a shadow over the entertainment industry the latter half of this decade. Whether film, music, TV or video games, the late 2010′s are filled with stories of people coming forward to bravely tell their stories about being abused and manipulated by men in positions of power. The #metoo movement as it’s come to be known has been a powerful force in giving marginalised people a voice and the ability to call out oppressors and in starting the groundwork to root out the misogyny in the seats of power, but this is a battle far from won.
While there are thousands of stories out there I want to focus on one in particular.
In 2016 a number of women spoke out about various forms of abuse by a well-known musician in the punk scene. It’s now over three years later and this group of women are in the midst of a long fought claim of defamation from this musician. If this case goes through it sets a precedent for silencing marginalised voices in the industry. They have been fighting for so long and with no legal aid available for the case they have had to finance their defense from their own pockets.
This is where Solidarity Not Silence comes in. Solidarity not silence is a crowdfunding effort to help take the case to trial without the women bankrupting themselves entirely so that they don’t have to give in to this mans demands. "YOU'VE GOT TO BE JOKING."
Trapper says bitterly.
"IF ANYONE SHOULD'VE GOTTEN TO HAVE A STAB AT THE NEW MEAT IT'S ME. I AM THE FIRST CHOSEN. IT IS MY RIGHT TO SPILL THEIR PATHETIC BLOOD UPON THE NEW HUNT."
This is indeed true. While not technically oldest killer, by place in time that's no doubt Plague as she's from a time between 1895-539 BC and by age that is up for questioning as time has no effect on them thus they haven't aged nor have they cared to ask what any of them were, but Trapper does hold the title of first taken by the Entity so he is the senior killer. In order of their arrival there was Trapper, Wraith, Hillbilly, Nurse, Shape, Hag, Doctor, Huntress, Cannibal, Nightmare, Pig, Clown, Spirit, Legion, Plague, and the latest one recruited being Ghost Face. But screw this seniority hierarchy bullshit! Legion's grin is wide, full of bravado, and no one likes it.
"Legion, is it true? Did you come across the human in your trial? Tra la la."
"ah, what's the matter? can't stand that it wasn't any of you that got to have fun with the new meat? well, suck it! that was one of the best hunts i've had ever! *manic laughter*"
Ghost Face creeps his way nearby.
"My my...Two of us now has had her all to themselves. Tell us, darling, how did it go? Was she as Wraith told us? How did you kill her? Details. They are important. Do share."
Feeling like the cock of the walk, Legion puts his hands in his pockets coolly.
"now i'm not one to kill and tell, but since you asked...i didn't kill her."
This gets some odd looks his way.
".........?"
"The Shape is right, deary. How did you not kill her?"
Plague asks legitimately.
"heh...i'll tell you, but i want something in exchange."

The Doctor remarks with a thought they all shared.
"trust me. the info i got is worth it. all i want is a gruesome gateau. and i know at least one of you still has one. you give me that, and i'll tell you every single thing that went down. every...last...little...detail."
"For the Entity's sake! Someone pay the man! I can't take this tease!"
Ghost Face is a needy one. But as a recently recruited killer, it's not like he had the item of request.
"How do we know what you have to say is worth it? For all we know, you're just playing us like a fox with a hare."
Huntress makes a valid point.
"fine. if you really need a sample...she helped me kill the other humans."
This little snippet of what he knew is just tempting enough to win over the majority.
"I shall deliver the offering to you after the meeting, dear."
Nurse says politely and Legion rubs his hands together deviously.
"alright. thank you kindly, lady. now gather round papa legion, kiddies, for i got quite the story to tell."
And he wasn't lying. Legion tells them everything. From her unique terror radius, to her resentment leading to betrayal, and her bizarre behavior before he stopped it from getting worst, to then letting her escape through the hatch. The only things he didn't mention are the small joke moments and the personal torture time. Somethings are just to enjoyed by the ones involved. Not like she enjoyed it. But he certainly did.
"T-This human is an odd one. They n-normally don't t-turn on each other unless w-we're going at them hard."
Pig stutters in thought.
"I'LL GIVE HER CREDIT. SHE DIDN'T STAND FOR THEIR BULLSHIT."
Trapper says with a smirk.
"Come on. she's just a messed up Human. quit sucking her dick like she's the god of all Humans."
Nightmare spats unimpressed.
"hAG thought human was she?"
Oh, Hag, you special bundle of try. Nightmare just glares and shakes his head, he's not one known for his patience.
"What do you think, Doctor? Tra la la."

"You mean the part where she was TURNING?"
That got them to look at Spirit.
"What? You can't tell me it's not OBVIOUS."
"*cough* Would you care to explain? *hack*"
Clown snarkily questioned through his smoker's lung-like coughing.
"I mean, I don't know if any of you remember, but I know the ENTITY likes to do things to the ones IT LIKES. You can't believe we LOOK LIKE THIS ON PURPOSE."
She brought up a good point. They didn't remember much about their pasts, but they knew most of them weren't as disfigured when they first were claimed by the Entity. Trapper didn't put the iron rods and hooks into his bones. Nurse didn't choke herself with a pillowcase over her head. Hag didn't cake herself in muck and deform her hands. Spirit didn't impale her body in shards of glass and she didn't sever her arms or implant a sword in one. Legion didn't merge with other people because they wanted to. Doctor didn't strap himself into his electroconvulsive gear to pry his eyes and mouth open, nor did he stream the wires into his bones. Wraith didn't lose it's form and identity because it felt like doing so. These were things the Entity did, taking what it knew of them and adding to them, sometimes as a punishment. Sure, other killers didn't go through such visible changes like them. Huntress and Clown only seemed to have blackened out eyes, like a creepy doll or a monstrous shark. Shape, Pig, Ghost Face, and Cannibal were unknowns as they wore masks and tended to don fully covering outfits. The hardest to tell if the Entity did anything to were Plague, Hillbilly, and Nightmare. All three were brought in with some sort of disfigurement so its really hard to say what was done to them if anything.
"SO WHAT YOU'RE SAYING IS...THAT HUMAN, FOR WHATEVER REASON, WAS BECOMING A MONSTER?"
Trapper has a totally non-asshole sounding tone.
"That's my IDEA at least."
It is just an suspicion Spirit had and nothing concrete.
"...THAT'S JUST STUPID."
Never mind, Trapper is just an asshole.
"You shouldn't dismiss it so soon. Tra la la. Nothing is beyond reason when it comes to the Entity."
A very good point made by Wraith.

Huntress needs very little reason to hunt humans.
"oH! hAG have question!"
A simple one is the Hag, questioning things is her specialty.
"Yes? Tra la la."
"WhaT happENS when the hooman sNaps?"
Not a bad question really.
"The darling does bring up a fair point. If and when the human does crack, what then?"
As curious as he is, Ghost Face is a cautious one and thinks ahead when it comes to his methods.
"don't know. i didn't let things get that far. she was hurting herself to make it stop when i stabbed her."
The mystery continues to mystify.

A general sound of acceptance is let out. It's settled.
"hey!"
Oh? Seems something is still on Legion's mind.
"let's get something straight before any of you get ideas when dealing with her. she's mine. so don't go thinking you can have any fun times with her."
This declaration gets their attention.
"Yours?"
Hillbilly is befuddled.
"ARE YOU TRYING TO CLAIM OBSESSION RIGHTS TO THE NEW MEAT?"
Trapper sneers.
"trying to claim? no. i already staked it. i sliced my name into her chest. that human belongs to me."
Obsession rights are not easy to get among killers. Currently, only three had them. Shape claimed the human named Laurie, Nightmare claimed the human named Quentin, and Pig claimed the human named Tapp. They were able to do this because they were brought here along with said humans. Sure, other humans have been brought from spots where the killers came from, but this didn't count as there is no direct affiliation. Legion would have to make a very strong case to pass this before the others.
"Did he just say...?"
Cannibal can't even finish.
"You cocky little shit!"
Ghost Face grabs Legion and pins him against a wall.
"What gives you the right to mark the human before bringing up your claim? Do you want me to kick your ass?"
Before things escalate, Shape comes and parts them from each other.
".........."
"But he broke the rules!"
"....."
Ghost Face huffs in annoyance and backs off, leading to Shape turning to Legion.
".........?"
"don't make it sound like something it's not. she's just a quirky human that happened to make killing more interesting. that's it. marking her was a heat of the moment thing. but i figured, what the hell, this might lead to more fun in the future. so i did it."
".............?"
"*scoff* please. don't give me that crap. if you three can handle your unwilling toys, then i should have no trouble with a plaything that actually will play back."
".......?"
"what? no, i'm not going to stalk her. why would i?"
"See?! He can't even fill the role! His claim for obsession rights are trash!"
Ghost Face is clearly sour over this as stalking prey is kind of his thing. Shape is also a stalking killer, as is Nightmare and somewhat Pig. Hell, nearly all of them were stalkers in some way or another except for a few that couldn't help but make very obvious noise without the help of add-ons to quiet them down.
"geez, man. what crawled up your dress to make you such a bitch?"
"This isn't a dress! It's a shroud! For the killer that needs concealment, but craves attention. Black fabrics help give cover, white glossy textures provide fashionable accents. The long jacket helps to keep the rest of the clothes dry as blood splashes with each stab of the knife."
"whatever, weirdo."
"Fuck you!"
Aggravated with the both of them, Nurse slaps them both on the back of the head as a ticked off mom would do.
"Both of you quit this nonsensical squabbling. Honestly...Half the time I cannot tell you apart from babbling children whining over who took the last cookie from the jar."
"But he..."
"No buts. What is done is done. If Legion has marked his claim, I think he should keep it."
Nurse's words take a few back, though none could see the cunning smirk hidden behind that clothe hood.
"What say you, little man? Can you show us that your bite is as strong as your bark and actually do as you claim? Or will you prove the naysayers right by continuing to boast like a pitiful whelp starving for attention?"
Legion snarls.
"i am so sick of everyone talking down to me like i'm some sort of joke. well, you know what? fuck you! fuck all of you! i'm just as ruthless as you assholes, if not more so! i don't need your stinking approval. that human is mine. and i'm going to show you all that i'm not to be fucked with!"
Legion shows that he's a mature person by storming out of there like a fed-up kid going to brood in their room.
"You didn't have to goad him like that. Tra la la. You know how unpredictable he can be."
Nurse shrugs dismissively at Wraith.
"Funny. Because he reacted just as I predicted. Like a child."
"N-Now that he's gone, c-can we discuss his claim p-properly?"
Fairly asked by Pig.
"IF THE RUNT THINKS HE CAN HANDEL THINGS LIKE A MAN, THEN FUCK IT. LET HIM TRY. IT'LL BE HILARIOUS WHEN HE FAILS. AND IT'S NOT LIKE IT'LL ITERFER WITH US IN ANY WAY."
Ghost Face is not taking this line of talk from Trapper well.
"You can't be serious? What if I went out and claimed a human as my obsession? How would you react to that?"
"I'D BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF YOU AND TAKE YOUR OFFERINGS."
"But...That's hypocrisy! Why can he get away with it and not me?!"
Trapper growls lowly.
"FOR ONE, HE'S BEEN HERE LONGER THAN YOU. YOU'VE BEEN HERE FOR ALMOST THREE MONTHS WORTH OF FEEDING CYCLES WHEREAS THIS WILL BE HIS NINTH. SECOND, YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE A TERRITORY WHERE YOU CAN CONDUCT YOUR BUSINESS. YOU'VE BEEN LOITERING IN ALL OF OURS LIKE SOME BUM. AND THIRD, IT'S NOT AMUSING WHEN YOU FAIL. YOU ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING AND ENJOY IT. HIM ON THE OTHER HAND...?"
Trapper folds his arms and shuts his eyes.
"LEGION MIGHT HAVE BEEN CHOSEN BY THE ENTITY, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN HE'S A NATURAL KILLER."
Ghost Face is confused.
"What do you mean?"
"*SIGH* IT'S LIKE SPIRIT SAID, JUST LOOK AT US. WE DON'T LOOK LIKE THIS FOR NO REASON. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU TRY TO REFUSE THE ENTITY'S OFFER OF SERVITUDE. IT DOESN'T TAKE REJECTION WELL."
"*cough* Typical woman. *hack*"
Clown is glared at venomously by the females for that.
"MY POINT BEING, SOME OF US ARE HERE BECAUSE THIS IS LIKE A PARADISE. ENDLESS SLAUGHTER AND NO REAL CONSEQUENCES. SO YOU PROBABLY TOOK TO IT WITH NO ISSUE. BUT FOR THE REST OF US, THE ONES THAT SAID NO AT THE START...WELL...YOU SEE WHY WE THEN SAID YES WHEN ASKED AGAIN."
"But what does that have to do with him?"
"BECAUSE HE SAID NO TO ALL THIS. HE MAY KILL BUT IT'S NOT SOMETHING HE WANTS TO DO. HE HAS TO DO IT. HE HAS TO PROVE HIMSELF. TO THE ENTITY, TO US, AND HIMSELF. IT SHOWS THAT HE KNOWS HE CAN DO BETTER. I RESPECT THAT DRIVE EVEN IF HE'S A LITTLE SHIT. AND AS ENTERTAINING AS IT IS TO SEE HIM FAIL, I'D BE LYING IF I SAID I WASN'T LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING HIM SUCCEED."
This doesn't seem to help Ghost Face at all.
"So just because I'm new, good at my job, and like it, I don't get to have the same rights as that jackass? That's bullshit!"
"NOT TO MENTION, YOU'RE ALSO A WHINY LITTLE BITCH THAT PISSES ME OFF."
"Fuck you!"
The sudden sound of bone on metal bashes when Trapper rushes over and punches Ghost Face's face, knocking the shrouded killer across the room.
"KNOW YOUR PLACE, NEWBIE. YOU WANT RIGHTS? RESPECT? POWER? THEN FUCKING EARN IT! DON'T BITCH ABOUT LIKE YOU'RE ENTITLED. TAKE TIME TO PROVE YOU SHOULD AND THEN WE'LL TALK."
Ghost Face sneers yet relents...for now. He'll have to bide his time and find some other way to play things his way.
"Um...Other than this stuff, are there any other matters that need to be brought up? Tra la la."
Wraith queries to which Huntress raises her ax up high.
"Oh! I have noticed the signs of an upcoming Blood Hunt."
"Hmmm...Tra la la...This is twice now one has come around All Hallows' Eve."

With that, Wraith vanishes and takes its leave among the other killers.
[Elsewhere: Survivor Campsite]
"'ow she doin'?"
David asks Claudette and Quentin, both of whom are tending to Lynsie who inexplicably collapsed after returning from the last trial.
"It's odd. There are no signs of anything physically wrong with her. Yet she seems to be suffering from Hypovolemia, a state of decreased intravascular volume. This may be due to either a loss of both salt and water or, the more likely culprit, a decrease in blood volume."
Claudette's so smart. It's no wonder she's the top healer of the group.
"She mentioned that Legion 'ad a bit of fun with 'er. Probably roughed 'er up pretty good. But the Entity should've fixed that. Right? The damn thing always does when we finish trial."
"I was thinking about that..."
Now for Quentin's evil theory of the day!
"From what Dwight said, the Entity was turning her into a killer. And from what we've found in those pages of Benedict Baker's journal, the Entity will punish killers that either don't perform well or downright refuse it. I think this was her punishment, a small warning, for refusing the Entity."
"And just 'ow would the big nasty in the sky know that?"
"Because that son of a bitch is everywhere."
Detective Tapp joins in on the conversion.
"I've been looking at this place like I would a crime scene. Trying to make some sense of things. It ain't easy. But some things are and the Red Stain is one of them."
"'ow do you figure that, ol' man?"
"Boy, I will slap you if you call me that again."
David rolls his eyes.
"Now from what I've gathered, I suspect that the intensity of the Stain is directly linked to the range of the Terror Radius the Killer has, meaning that Killers with a shorter Terror Radius have a fainter Stain and Killers with a larger Terror Radius have a stronger Stain."
"Makes sense so far."
"I also suspect that the Stain works as means for the Entity to watch over the trials directly through the Killer's eyes. An indication of this being the case is the of that Killer ability Beast of Prey, as the Stain is gone because the Killer momentarily loses their connection to the Entity and is free to roam due to their bloodlust being so strong."
"So the moment her eyes made the Stain..."
"The Entity knew. Probably saw through Legion's eyes why it wasn't working on her. Nutty kid for thinking she could fight off something like the Entity."
"Then what do we do?"
A not wild Dwight appears.
"About her I mean."
The group looks at the unconscious member with uncertainty.
"As much as I hate to agree with Nea, she does make a point. If at any moment for any reason a team member can suddenly start attacking the team, that does make her a liable threat."
Claudette makes a point.
"But it wasn't for just any reason. She only snapped because she was angry. Angry that we didn't even treat her like she was on the team."
Dwight says somberly.
"*scoff* Severs you fuckers right then. It's about time there was somethin' to put douchebags in there place around 'ere."
Judgmental eyes are cast onto David.
"What?"
"You have an annoying habit of trying to fight the monsters."
"So?"
"You end up dying 96% of the time."
"'ey, you 'ave the respect my 4% chance of doin' anythin'."
"Maybe if it was actually helpful."
"Says the twat that spends 'is 'elpful time 'indin' in lockers."
"Hey!"
"Will you both shut it. You're bickering isn't helping anyone."
Dwight huffs and David mutters curses under his breath.
"So getting back to the point, we've covered the whole she'll hulk out when angry. But what do we do when she does get in smash mode?"
Quentin's age really shows sometimes.
"The kid makes a good point. A silly one, but a point none the less."
"Thanks?"
"But what do we do if she does become a killer? It's not like we can take down a normal monster."
"The same thing we do to every other monster..."
Nea shouts.
"Bash them over the head with pallets!"
Nea's guide to toxicity rule #1: If there is a chance to smack something with a pallet, do it!
"Yeah...No. That just pisses people off more."
"We're lookin' for ways to not make 'er mad. I think bein' bashed in the 'ead contradicts that."
Nea folds her arms uncaring.
"I don't care if it makes her mad. The goal is to make what's chasing you stop the chase."
"By pissin' them off even more?"
"It's called tactical frustration, dingus! You make the other person so mad that they want nothing to do with you anymore."
"So bein' a cunt?"
"Fuck you!"
"Fuck you."
*CROWS CAW*
Fluttering shadows morph from the trees and scatter across the ever glowing gloom of the sky. This garners attention above all other matters.
"The crows..."
"Damn it! The Entity was listenin'."
"It's always listening, dork. It just normally doesn't care about what it hears."
"It cared now."
Meg interjects.
"The real question is...Why?"
"In my experience, it's never a good thing for when a supernatural interdimensional elder god takes interest in anything human-related."
Ash rings in with blunt truth. When something beyond human understanding meddles in human affairs it rarely ends without great suffering of some kind. But who would suffer? One of them? All of them? Humans? Monsters? Who bloody well knows?! That's the terrifying aspect of it. Fate's unpredictability.

My eyes slowly open to fog. Nothing but dark thick fog. The kind of fog that doesn't just blind you but fucks with your other senses. There's this weird floating feeling even though I know I'm touching the ground. Or what I assume is ground. It's something solid and I just choose to believe its ground because I don't want to think of what it could be otherwise. The air has no smell to it, it's dull and messes with my nose. It even has a faint charred smoky taste to it like you've just licked some burnt charcoal. And as for sound, there is none. There's nothing but this weird dead silence that is just eerie enough that I can sense something is around but again all there is quiet. Moving around to explore is not an option. Not that I can't move, I just choose not to because fuck you, I don't want to be automatically killed by unknown danger like the last time I went off into obvious danger zones.
[The Entity sees that you are learning, little worm. No longer running off into the unknown. Very wise.]
Well, that doesn't make me feel better about the situation.
"Look, I'm not gonna beat around the bush here. You can easily mess me up in ways I probably wouldn't begin to think of just for giggles and I'm not dumb enough to piss you off to do so. So in the bluntest way I can think of asking...What the fraggle happened to me and where/why am I here, oh mighty Entity?"
My attitude started to kick in near the end so I figured a little cuteness will keep me from being turned inside out or something else fucked up.
[My, the Entity forgets how bothersome you worms can be. It is no wonder why we do not speak so often. But it is understandable that a worm would be confused by what the Entity does.]
It is at this moment that I come to believe the Entity speaks in the third person and yet in a way that is still grammatically fitting. I guess ego is next to godliness.
[You, you odd and yet interesting little worm, are a strange creature even by what the Entity knows. The Entity has brought you here so that things would be...well...less of a hassle.]
"Sounds reasonable so far. Yet where is HERE exactly?"
[This is the Void. Or that is what you worms tend to call it. It is a different plane of existence. A place where the Entity stores the broken worms that are no longer of any use.]
I remember being told about this place. The Survivors that have given up and lost all hope end up here as they aren't useful food anymore. That explains the feelings this place is giving me.
"Wow. One trial and you deem me Void worthy? Must be a record."
This earns it a bit of a laugh.
[Amusing. No, little worm, you have not warranted a spot of permanence here...yet. The Entity has brought you here for two reasons. The first, to tell you of your role and personal skills in this delicious game. The second will come later.]
I got skillz!
[These skills or Perks are abilities that the Entity is generous enough to allow you to have. Each side is given three, so you worms are just as capable as the beasts. You may choose to share these perks with the other worms or keep them to yourself and hone them to make yourself better. The choice is yours and yours alone.]
So I can either be a decent person and increase the whole team's chances of living or I can be a dick.
[Your first perk is named after that clever move you pulled in the trial...Snowball's Chance.]
This orange diamond or square standing on its points pops up in front of me and it depicts a glob being thrown.
[Snowball's Chance: Activatable Perk. While within the Killer's Terror Radius and in a Chase for 45 seconds activates Snowball's Chance. Once Snowball's Chance is activated, you may be able to scoop whatever you can grab from the ground to throw at or away from the Killer. Choosing the away option will create a loud noise notification for the Killer at a distance of 10/15/20 meters and provides a helpful distraction provided the Killer goes for it. Choosing the at Killer option, if hit in the face, will momentarily blind them as well as stun them, whereas a normal body hit merely provides a stun. Snowball's Chance deactivates once it has been used.]
"That...sounds badass."
Honestly, it kind of feels like an RGP game where I made up a move for my character and some game developer thought it was just cool enough to put the character/move into their game. I'm a fucking nerd and love this shit! The image in the diamond changes to a pic of me crawling with a sneaky grin.
[The second perk is called...Skulker's Instinct.]
Sounds ominous.
[Skulker's Instinct: Always Active Perk. Years of isolation and distrust have taught you a thing about the benefits of paranoia. You crawl close to the floor instead of crouching, this prevents you from leaving Scratch Marks and gives you faster movement speed compared to crouching by 90/95/100%. This level of stealth allows you to avoid alerting Crows but does spook other Survivors if you bump into them, making them yelp and alerting the Killer. Also, if injured, you know better than to make a sound, you hold in the sounds of pain for the first time at least. Any future injuries will cause you to whimper.]
"I suppose that's fair. And I can be creepy as hell, so the random spooking seems about right."
[The third perk is quite delightful. It is called...Breaking Point.]
That one doesn't sound so good and the image of me looking unhinged doesn't help either.
[Breaking Point: Triggered Perk. Due to your mental toughness, you can handle most stressful situations that would cripple a normal person. But you are only human and even you have a limit where things start to get under your skin. The more your team screws around and the Killer attacks you or hinders your progress, the frustrating stress will begin to pile on until you can take it no longer. Resentment Tier I: Your annoyance level begins to grow, you are more agitated and on your guard. Your speed is reduced by 15% and preforming Skill Checks gets hard to do. Resentment Tier II: All effects of Tier I. The continued stress is not helping you, you can not trust your teammates with even the simplest task and the Killer is not making matters better either. Your frustration makes performing Skill Checks extremely difficult as you are not as focused. You aren't sure how much more you can take. Resentment Tier III: All effects of Tier II. You can no longer take it. Everyone is against you. They want you to die. You have no choice. You must kill or be killed!]
This has me disturbed, to say the least.
"Uh..."
[Which leads into your special ability. The Entity has dubbed it...The Anomaly State.]
"Special ability?"
[Yes, special ability. All Killers have one.]
I'm not liking this anymore.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa...Whoa! I am no killer."
[Oh sure. And what you did to Jake was merely some aggressive affection.]
"I didn't want to hurt him!"
[Yes you did.]
"No. I didn't!"
[Yes, you did. You wanted to hurt him for disrespecting you and talking down to you like some lowly worm. And how dare he do such a thing. He does not know you or your hardships. He lived a life of wealth and comfort. How dare he talk to you like he is superior.]
I know what it's doing. It's trying to talk to me like it's on my side. Like it cares. Appealing to me to make me believe in this false sympathy. It is cruel and manipulative...I fucking hate that It's worming into my head!
[And Dwight...He thinks he is so clever, telling you bits and pieces but not whole truths. If he was not willing to tell you everything before, what makes you think he will tell you anything now? Now that he has seen the beast in you.]
It's getting to me. I'm growling softly and making fists.
[Let us not forget David. Surely even you can see that he is merely using you. Pretending to be interested in something more when all he wants is your body. Do you believe that he will remain friendly once he had taken what he has wanted?]
Stop it! Stop making so much sense!
[Face it, little worm. It is as you have always known. You can not rely on others. They have their own motives and desires. No one will help you out of innocence. There is always something others want from you and will do anything to get it. Even if those means include toying with your very heart.]
"And why should I believe you? You have your own motives too."
[That is true. Yet my motive is very clear and the Entity can not lie. The Entity gains no matter if the beasts or worms are successful. The Entity is neither your friend or foe, though you may believe otherwise.]
Damn it! I hate it when something obviously bad makes incredibly good points!
[Now, if you will allow the Entity to continue, the Entity will explain further.]
I bite my tongue. Nothing I say matters to this thing anyway. It's only humoring me for the time being.
[Each Killer has a very unique Power. Each is distinct and stands out from the others. You are no different...and yet you are. This is due to your soul.]
"My soul?"
[Yes. That soul of yours is not natural for one of your kind. It is...rather delectable.]
Creepy.
[But its oddness is why we are speaking and why the Entity sees fit in gifting you such rare power.]
Dare I ask?
"And what be this power that you would bestow upon me?"
It's freaky in how I can almost feel it smirk. The diamond thing changes to a gray square and now shows a split shot of my face. One side is normal. The other side is like Batman villain Twoface.
[Special Ability: Anomaly State. Upon Breaking Point's Resentment Tier III activation, you will undergo a notable mental breakdown and such a snap opens you up to the Entity. The touch of the Entity leaves burning scars and blisters of light. Is it a gift or a curse? That's up to you as you become the Corrupted Survivor. This tainted essence is always within you, giving off a radius that Killers can pick up on and use to track you down similar to the one you can hear to know when a Killer is close by. As the Corrupted Survivor, you only have one goal...Survive. Your team is a liability, holding you down and keeping you in harm's way. Killing them will increase your odds of making it out alive. The fewer there are, the fewer things they can get in the way of. These actions will please the Entity but the real Killer might not be happy about you stealing its prey. True Killers can still attack and kill you in this state, so even they are just another obstacle in your way. You can not kill a Killer. But you can incapacitate them for a short time and allowing you to finish what you have started. Taking down a Killer grants you immeasurable Bloodlust, making your movement speed increase to 10.0 m/s and letting you see the auras of any remaining Survivors for 3 seconds.]
Not gonna lie, that both is blood-chilling and thrilling at the same time.
[However...]
Oh?
[Just as there are ways to trigger this False Killer state, there are ways to prevent and reverse you back to normal. So long as your team performs as you think they should and do not mess up often, Breaking Point will not activate. If Breaking Point is activated and only at Tier I, the effects can be undone by your team avoiding injuring for 2 minutes or repairing 1 generator. If Breaking Point is activated and at Tier II, your team will need to do better by avoiding damage for 4 minutes or repairing 2 generators. If Breaking Point is activated and at Tier III, Anomaly State will activate. If Anomaly State is active, your team can try to revert you to normal by either proving their worth in doing tasks needed to escape or cause you enough pain to regain some clarity. Proving their worth can be done by restoring generators, healing teammates, hindering the real Killer, and unlocking the gates. Clarity through pain is done by blinding with flashlights, being stunned with pallet drops, being disoriented by firecrackers, and being stabbed by carried victims. If Anomaly State is undone, there is a cooldown time of 4 minutes before Breaking Point can trigger again. Killers can also use pain to revert you to normal, with enough damage from clashing with the real Killer you will be back to being just another piece of meat waiting to be hooked.]
The square thing disappears but not the imprint of what has just been told to me. I am now a living version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. At any point in a trial, I can be driven into such rage that I will start to kill my team.
[What say you, little worm? Do you like the gifts the Entity has given you?]
Don't be a smartass. This is basically a god you're dealing with. Pissing it off will only add more salt and acid to this wound I call existence. Though it could do without the condescending tone.
"Though I'm not sure why you've done so, I am flattered you've went to such trouble. Thank you, oh mighty Entity."
Why is it now that I realize I'm talking to a voice in my head? And why does it feel normal? I am strangely okay with this and I am not okay with that.
[Good. Very good. The Entity appreciates this version of you. Perhaps you are now more willing to play by the rules and will not have to be punished for very long.]
This confuses me.
"I'm sorry?"
[Oh, you will be. There are consequences for disobedience, little worm. And the Entity does not like it when others try to deny that which is meant to be.]
The ground beneath me rumbles for a moment before I lose my balance and end up impaled through the gut by something that has my heart stop. A spidery-like claw is jutting from my insides and weirdly enough there is no blood. Yet there is pain. Lots and lots of pain! My roar is harsh and hurts my throat. But the claw is merely the beginning. The ground pushes up more and more claws protrude out, making like I'm in the palm of a massive hand.
"Holy shit..."
The claws crush around me, twisting my torso to the side and pointing me up towards what I guess is a sky.
[You will be a good little worm and embrace the power given to you.]
"Yes! I swear I'll be good!"
The claws tighten, my bones ache in pain, and the claw coming out of me twitches slowly down to etch its tip against my head.
[And you will no longer harm yourself.]
"I promise! I promise!"
[Good girl.]
The claw's tip beings to force itself into my skull.
[While you do say the needed things, the Entity believes you should still learn from your defiance. It will be some time before your body regenerates the blood you lost during the trial and allow you to fully wake up. So till then, the Entity will happily make sure you know just how things work here. Your first lesson, what happens when you bring the displeasure of refusal and failure to please the Entity.]
It inches painfully deeper into my brain. My howls are deafening yet have no echo in this place, the fog damping all sound.
[Yes. Wail all you like. Suffering adds such flavor to the soul. And the fear...Tasty, tasty, beautiful fear. Truly it is the spice of life. You worms all taste so much better when you are afraid.]
This is merely the beginning of a very long and agonizingly drawn-out torture. Since this is basically my spirit/mind in this Void, any harm done is all going to further fuck over my mental health and probably going to make it easier to break when under similar stress. All I know is I'm not coming out of this unscathed.
(UNKNOWN AMOUNT OF TIME LATER)
With a loud gasp and violent bolt upright, I finally cast my eyes on something other than the claws of the Entity exploring new ways of doing awful things to me. My body is shaking. Ears ringing. And there's a searing burn coming from my chest. My senses are so dull that once I register that there's something on my shoulder I throw myself halfway across the camp in fear that the claws have come back and I hold myself in sheer fright. Of course that's not really the case. It was just David. Yet this does little to calm my panicking heart and rapid breathing.
"Whoa now. Take it easy, Luv. It's only me."
He takes a few steps towards me before stopping at the blocking arm of Jane.
"Oi, what's your deal?"
"Look at her. She needs a moment. Just give her a bit of space before you go over there."
He grumbles to himself but listens to the woman. Allowing me to regain some semblance of normality. My brain catches up to what is really around me and very slowly settles down from the adrenaline that comes from being fucking terrorized by the Entity for who knows how long. Speaking of which...
"H-How long?"
Did...Did my voice just crack? Geez, I'm messed up if I can't even control that basic function.
"How long what?"
Laurie comes near but keeps a fair distance from me.
"How long was I gone?"
This question has them looking at me funny. I don't like how they're looking at me.
"Gone?"
"Luv, you never left camp."
Granted, they have no clue what I meant by "gone". Still, telling me anything else like "we're not sure" or a number of trials that went by while I slept would be much better. Instead, this dumb answer feels like they're talking to me like a child and it pisses me off.
"Don't talk down to me and tell me how long I've been out!"
My head throbs, both in lingering pain and frustration.
"A while..."
Adam's input is made.
"At least ten or so trials past since you blacked out."
Okay, but what does that mean? A day? Two days? A week? Why haven't these numbnuts found a way to measure time?!
"Too long...Too god damn long..."
I move to stand but find my legs a bit wobbly. Claudette brings a medkit over.
"Try not to move around too fast or so much. You don't want to hurt yourself."
I huff a slight snarl.
"Don't waste that kit. Just teach me Self-Care so I can take care of myself."
Her face, among the others, is shocked.
"How do you know about...?"
"Your Perks?"
I cut her off merely to shut her up so I can explain. Otherwise, we'll be here playing 20 Questions till trial starts.
"I know your Perks. I know ALL of your Perks. It wouldn't let me leave without knowing everything. Forcing each and every bit of information you all failed to tell me so deep into my skull that I'm sure it erased what little childhood memories I had left to do so."
I point at her.
"Your three Perks are Botany Knowledge, Empathy, and Self-Care."
"I don't understand. We never told you..."
"Are you ignoring me or just stupid? It told me EVERYTHING. The Entity told me the things none of you ever bothered to. Like seeing Auras, Scratch Marks, Add-ons, Sabotaging Hooks, Cleansing Totems, and some weird-ass shit called the Bloodweb. Which, by the way, thank you all for being so nice in telling me. It really means a lot that you are all so nice and caring. Oh, wait, no you're not. You're all a bunch of bastards!"
My head pangs harder. A foreboding sense of dread tingles my spine.
"Easy now. Please calm down."
Dwight's voice seems almost distantly muffled in my ears.
"I know you're upset. But you don't need to get worked up over it."
This almost has me seeing red.
"Worked up? You haven't seen worked up. This isn't me upset. This is me after the Entity has had it's fun! Punishing me. Doing god awful things to me...Being killed by the monsters is a dream compared to the nightmare I suffered!"
Nea scoffs.
"Geez. Overly dramatic much?"
My eye twitches and the pain in my head is getting worse. I roar out in agonizing discomfort.
"Stop it! Stop pissing me off! I can't control the beast at Tier III!"
The mentioning of something like a tier gets attention. Though my throbbing head isn't helping me in trying to concentrate. Suddenly, mostly because the pain made my eyes shut, David surprises me by grabbing hold of my face and forcing me to lock eyes with him.
"Look at me. Ignore them, Luv. I got you. Block everythin' else that ain't me. Do that for me, Luv. I know you can."
His eyes. Dark brown and intense yet soft. Why can't I look away?
"That's my girl. Focus on this mug of mine and know it's gonna be okay."
It takes a moment before I regain the memory to blink. In this state, it's easy to get lost in those eyes of his. His smirk is also strangely reassuring.
"Heh. Trippy."
"What?"
"Did you know that your eyes change color?"
"Yeah. Not sure why or when it happens."
"They were kinda red-orange before and now dullin' to light brown."
"Normally they're ether light brown, hazel, light green, or some mix of those. Any other color is rare and just tends to happen."
He smiles.
"So...Feelin' better?"
"A little bit."
"Anythin' I can do to make that little bit bigger?"
I bite my tongue.
"Come on. You can tell me."
I start to blush.
"...Hug?"
He surprised yet I'm the one more shocked that he actually does it. His embrace has me feeling so weak. I tremble, wanting to give in and break down. To cry and let this pain out. But I don't. I won't let myself be so open. Not around them. Not even him.
"'ow about now?"
I just nod against him.
"Do you...I don't know...Wanna talk about stuff?"
[You may choose to share these Perks with the other worms or keep them to yourself and hone them to make yourself better. The choice is yours and yours alone.]
The Entity's words come back to me like a whisper on the wind. Part of me really wants to make them suffer as I have. But I don't want to be like them.
"Okay...But only because there's important stuff to tell you guys."
"Do you want me to stay by your side?"
"...Maybe."
He merely chuckles and musses up my hair playfully. While it is true, what the Entity said about him is something I've thought of when it comes to David's intentions, he sadly is the only one at camp I trust. That and he's not that bad of a guy to be around even if his flirting can get a bit tiresome.
With little coaxing, the others gather around the fire as I tell them what the Entity told me. I do my best to explain my three perks. Though it's the special ability that interests them the most. And can I blame them? Now they have confirmation that a team member can become a killer and attack them if things aren't going so well. It's a downright terrifying idea. One that I'm sure the Entity loves. Still, even though I am telling them these things, I refuse to share with them just how to use my perks for themselves. My faith in these people is nearly non-existent, not including David who's the one keeping me sane after all this crap. Plus, I'd rather understand these perks better myself before passing anything along to them. Frankly, the only ones they could use would be Snowball's Chance and Skulker's Instinct. Breaking Point would be useless to them as it serves no purpose other than to trigger my killer side which is exclusively a me thing. However, my reluctance to share my perks is not taken kindly.
"What kind of crap is this? You want us to share our perks but you won't share yours?!"
Feng beats Nea to the punch on being pissed off.
"I just found out about these things. Let me understand how they work."
"What's there to understand? You throw shit and you're stealthy. There. I did it for you."
Now Nea says her bit.
"If it's so simple then why can't you do it?"
Meg sticks up for me.
"Because fuck you, that's why."
"Cunt, would you shut up. Luv's not askin' for all our perks. Just one. And it ain't even yours."
David is right. I've only asked for one perk and it's Claudette's Self-Care. It unlocks the ability to heal yourself without a Med-Kit at 50% the normal Healing speed and increases the efficiency of Med-Kit self-heal by 10%, for Claudette herself this is 20%. I asked for this skill so that damage wouldn't bother me as much and trigger my killer side. But I guess assholes can't see the big picture what with their head being so far up their butts.
"Call me a cunt again, you Limey bastard! I fucking dare you!"
"And your lot wonders why the rest of the world hates ya."
I tug on David's ear and he whines.
"'ey, what was that for?"
"You don't need to keep throwing logs on her fire. Just ignore it and eventually the heat will die down."
He looks at me funny before draping his thick arm around my shoulders.
"Ah, Luv, 'ad we ever met outside of this place I don't think we'd go very far."
"Oh? Why's that?"
"Because you'd be tryin' to talk me out of fightin'. And me not bein' able to fight just ain't right."
I simply smirk.
"Fair enough. But...We'd still be cool otherwise, right?"
"A rockin' bird like you? Oh yeah. I'd be a right proper git to not be interested in keepin' you around."
"Heh. You're not such a bad bloke yourself, Scrappy-Doo."
"...I was goin' to say it's sexy when you use English, but you killed it by callin' me that cartoon dog."
"Yet the resemblance is uncanny."
"Hey!"
Oh right, Nea's still here and being annoying.
"Don't act like I'm not here."
"Nea, just stop it already."
Ace speaks up.
"The kid has a right to learn her skills before giving them away."
"Up yours, old man."
"Know what..."
Bill interjects.
"I seem to recall a time when you flat out told us to 'shove it' when we asked about your perks."
"Yeah...well...*scoff* Fine! Do whatever. I don't care anyway."
She storms away to be as far from the fire and me as possible without leaving the safety zone.
"Geez, she can be such a bummer for a kid."
Kate remarks as she tunes up her nice acoustic guitar. And that gets my attention.
"Um...Where did you get that from?"
She looks at the guitar.
"Oh, this? I bought it off the Entity."
I look at her funny.
"What?"
"Seems the Entity told up about the mechanics of trials but not the rewards for doing them."
Jake states with a tone that lets me know he's still ticked at me for getting him killed.
"What do you mean 'rewards'?"
Jeff clears his throat to get my attention.
"So the Entity told you about the Bloodweb, right? How that it uses Bloodpoints to get Add-ons and that you gain Bloodpoints during the Trials by performing certain actions."
Dear lord don't tell me it's another long as fuck exposition rant.
"Yeah?"
"Well, aside from Bloodpoints, there are two other forms of currency. Iridescent Shards and Auric Cells. Iridescent Shards can be used to bribe the Entity into gifting you a copy of someone else's perk but that's super expensive. Typically like 2,000 or 2,700 shards. Depends on the Entity's mood. Auric Cells are super rare and are a pain in the ass to collect, but they're worth it. With enough Auric Cells, the Entity will make things a lot more entertaining by letting us get new clothes and items that make living here just a bit more bearable. You get both these things in varying amounts as rewards for how well you did in Trials and you might not even know you have any if no one tells you about it, but you can check how much you have when you go into the Bloodweb."
I just stare at him and soak this in.
"And the cool part is, once you get these things, you can have them permanently. No need to re-get something if you've decided to change. Just think about it and pesto. New duds and stuff."
My brain is starting to fail at taking this information.
"You alright there, Luv?"
"Just...I can't seem to understand the logic of the Entity."
"Don't bother trying..."
Dwight chirps.
"We've been here for what feels like ages and we still have no clue when it comes to that thing."
"I just think it's a little weird. The Entity wants us to die so it can feed off of our souls. It wants us to be afraid of it and die. That's how it gets the best taste out of us. Yet it gives us a place to relax? Then grants us items of comfort? Granted, this is probably to make us last long as a source of food as the useless are sent to the Void. But still...If it can already pull people from different points in time and across other timelines, then why not amass a large city's worth of humans to compensate for any that break easily and not cater to the needs of said humans?"
I like to think this is a well thought out point. I mean, I don't understand beings of alternate realities nor do I claim to. But when I'm hungry, I don't go out to a restaurant and get only some water. Sure, drink enough water and eventually, you'll get full. Yet it's nothing compared to an all you can eat buffet. So why is it content with the few random stragglers that wander in? It doesn't make sense to me.
"It doesn't waste..."
Tapp mutters before hammering his fist into his palm.
"It doesn't waste us. It may feed on us slowly over time. But it will feed until there's nothing left. Like sucking the very last drops of juice out of the box."
"So then the longer we last and keep our hope up..."
Quentin needed to interject for some reason.
"The longer it can continue to feed on a smaller number of victims without too much effort or attention. Like a small-time crook getting away with petty crimes because of a larger more noticeable syndicate has the cops focus."
Could he not refer to his law enforcement career? We get it. You were a cop. That shit doesn't matter here, Tapp!
"You know, for a group of people that don't try to understand the Entity, you understand it more than you think when someone questions things."
Again, I like to think I make good points. And their expressions only further this thought.
"We can increase insights by exposing ourselves to lots of different ideas that might help us form new connections."
All eyes look at Nea who randomly spouted that rather insightful quote.
"What? I know shit too. Douche turds think I can't be smart or something?"
I would crack some remark if I gave a shit. Frankly, I'm sick of letting that bitch piss me off so easily. I should take the advice David and even myself gave earlier, ignore her. Ignore everything that ticks me off. I can't become a killer if I don't let things get to me.
"So..."
Claudette moves over to me.
"I know you told us how your perk works. But do you know if it's only applicable in trials?"
I merely tilt my head in confusion.
"Beg your pardon?"
"She means can you go nuts in camp."
Jake spits and I just shrug.
"No clue. As chatty as the Entity was, it didn't tell me that."
"Figures as much."
"Still, you can never be too safe. Best not get on my bad side."
Probably not the best thing to remotely joke about. Though David tries to play this tension off by yanking me into a headlock and nuggying me till I'm surly growling.
"Awww...Such a big bad killer you are. So threatenin' with that cute face."
"*snarls* Will you quit fucking with my hair?!"
"Oh? And what'cha gonna do about it, Luv?"
I bite his forearm yet he merely laughs. This leads into some mildly aggressive horseplay on both our parts. Despite the oddity that this interaction is it does serve to show that while I am now a threat, that it doesn't mean I'm not human. I'm still me. A nutty weirdo goon that got stuck here just like they did. They can die and so can I. We are all prey. My power in the grand scheme of things changes nothing.
Still, something feels uneasy. While things return to normal and the occasional chat, I get this odd sense of being watched. Well, a different one from the feeling of the eyes of the other survivors. No, this one feeling is off. Predatory. A feeling I once felt long before I had my trial. There's a monster in the woods. The question remains of who it is and why is it skulking around? Is it Legion? Did he come to see me squirm? Or is this someone else? Someone I haven't met yet? I have so many questions!
[Elsewhere: Survivor Campsite Woods]
He watched from his spot as he had done so for quite some time since that fateful meeting. He wasn't going to miss any chance to prove the others wrong. To show that he was worthy. And he was going to use the new meat to do so. His patience paid off this time, as the human was once more up and about after many hunting cycles of just lying still like a corpse. Luck was even further on his side as he intently listened in on their ramblings and learned that the others weren't that far off in their theories on her strange power. This human, if provoked enough, will become a killer just like him. The thought of seeing such a sight made him excited. Such a moment needed to be preserved for posterity. With some careful hand placement, he makes a bold move and readies the shot that will mark his road to respect.

The small camera's flash was obscured but there was nothing to stop the shutter sound. A few of the humans picked up on it and dismissed it for normal odd noise. Though the new meat is less swayed to ignore the sound. Her eyes search for any hint of something different lurking in the foggy shadows.
lub-dub...lub-dub...lub-dub...lub-dub...
He could hear his heartbeat. Strange, as he didn't think he had a heart to begin with. One of the other humans pulls her attention from investigating further and a sudden thrill has him. He's never been caught before yet his stealth nearly failed him here. This was exciting. Turning the camera around, he looked at the image capture and smirked to himself. Yes...Things were going to be fun for Ghost Face.

Resident Evil 2 reflections
One crisp winter evening in early 1998, my friend “Kyle” sat me down on the floor of his room, which was twice the size of my room, and fired up his Sony PlayStation. “You aren’t going to believe this,” he said.
He’d said that a lot over the past several months, usually in regards to something happening on the Sony PlayStation, and usually he was right. He’d shown me Resident Evilfirst, always calling it “Res Eve,” and it had shaken my very idea of what a video game was. Real actors? Real voices? Real emotions? Indeed I could not believe that something as juvenile and recreational as a video game had actually scared me. But the efficacy of that first zombie head-turn was undeniable.
In the following months Kyle had shown me a Top Gun game with live-action cutscenes featuring the bald principal from Back to the Future; the original Dynasty Warriors, which was a 3D fighting game; Mortal Kombat Trilogy; and the Sephiroth fight from Final Fantasy VII where he destroys the entire solar system as a canned attack animation. It’s amusing in hindsight that these titles could ever have been lumped together in any capacity, but each of them was such a fundamental upset of my existing notion of video games* that it was initially impossible for me to discern any gradient in quality. With the exception of the live-action bits, I couldn’t even discern FMVs from in-game cutscenes, because neither concept had existed in my head at all. It was like if you’d gone back in time to the dawn of the industrial age and shown someone The Godfather and an episode of Married with Children back-to-back. However briefly, there’d be a moment where their reaction would be roughly the same to each: “THE PICTURES ARE MOVING AND TALKING.”
*Okay, MK Trilogy didn't exactly break new ground, but it made me realize my kopy of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on the Genesis wasn't very ultimate at all.
↑↓ Keep in mind I saw these two things on the same day, prior to which the most visually impressive thing I'd ever seen a game do was accurately render comic strip characters (Garfield: Caught in the Act, I'm looking at you).
On this crisp, winter evening in 1998, Kyle showed me Resident Evil 2, which had only just released. We sat and watched the Leon intro in silence. There’s a very special stillness, an eerie electricity to the original RE2 intros that reminds me of the ominous feeling of the air and the sky before a big thunderstorm. It’s the same feeling I get when I watch the closing moments of the Who Shot Mr. Burns? Episode of The Simpsons, that sparse tension that is equal parts quieting and disquieting.
I watched, transfixed. Finally, the game relinquished control to Kyle, and he ran through a fiery city street teeming with zombies. Their numbers seemed to fill every shot. Everything was wrecked and burning and overrun, a fruition of the thing the first Resident Evil only hinted at while locking you inside that mansion.
Kyle ducked into an apparent safehouse and was immediately—seamlessly!—halted by a suspicious shopkeep with a shotgun. A dramatic, fully voiced conversation ensued, the shopkeep backed off, and Kyle was given freedom to explore the room until suddenly—seamlessly!—the horde crashed through the false security of the shop’s window glass and ate the screaming shopkeep alive, blood fountaining from his red-stained neck and torso. You know the rest.
I walked home for dinner at dusk, looking back over my shoulder every few feet, and marveled that a video game could generate such real-life fear.
I got my own Sony PlayStation about half a year later and devoured both RE2campaigns within three days. By the end I was as much a survivor as a player, and didn’t entirely know how to reconcile the good time I’d had with the immense feeling of relief that it was over. To survive a prolonged immersion in terror is an emotionally complicated experience, and not one I’d been accustomed to associating with “play.” It struck me how much scarier RE2 was than even RE1. RE1 put danger in the obvious place—a big, creepy mansion; in RE2, the evil had spilled out into the streets and overrun society’s most guarded spaces—a gun shop, a police station. The voice acting, graphics, and environmental design were also significantly better than before. The point is that Resident Evil 2 was a special game, in large part because it did things early, but also because it did things well. It was the sweet spot of the original RE trilogy—it did things better than RE1, at a riper time than RE3.
I might’ve thought any attempt to recapture that magic would be futile, had Capcom not already proven the potential for such a thing in 2002 with the GameCube remake of the original Resident Evil, which was where much of the demand for an RE2 remake came from in the first place. The RE1 remake had very cleverly used the players’ nostalgia against them, subverting our expectations in all the most notorious moments. It also made modest but smart improvements to the game’s systems and drastic improvements to its audiovisual elements, and threw in a few meatier surprises. Basically it succeeded in an impossible aim: to make fans feel like they were replaying their favorite game for the first time.
For the most part, RE2’s remake is just as much of a triumph as RE1’s, combining state-of-the-art tech and thoughtful self-reflection to make the old feel brand new again. The police station is significantly altered from its original layout, and yet similar enough that you feel like you know it. The more rote, later sections of the original game have been given new personality and contour—the greenhouse and sewer sections both stood out as impressively reimagined. The characters, too, have been smartly rewritten to feel more like interacting humans than archetypal action figures. Each one of them bore impressive nuance rarely seen in a Capcom title but crucial for good horror, in my opinion.
The action seems to lean heavily toward the “survival” side of things, with even plain-jane zombies sometimes taking an obscene number of bullets before they stay down. I appreciate how this adds to the “dangerous” feel of the game, but I sometimes felt like it had lost a little bit of the fun factor I associate with the shooting action of the entire series. Still, I see this as a stylistic choice rather than a flaw, and they also give you a handful of unlockable infinite ammo rewards in the post-game so you can go for a more action-packed “victory lap.” (Note: @jbsargent taught me that term :D)
Mr. X is worth his own essay, but I’ll just say he was always one of my favorite things about RE2 and he’s absolutely my favorite thing about the RE2remake. I wouldn’t change a thing.
Shortcomings
I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about the remake’s glaring mistreatment of the A/B campaign structure. The whole point of this game’s dual-protagonist hook is to show the unfolding of events from two separate but concurrent perspectives. Here’s what happened to Claire. Now here’s what happened to Leon. The remake sometimes gives us this—Leon deals with Ada while Claire handles Sherry and the police chief—but sometimes inexplicably puts Leon and Claire through the same events, implying that only one of these campaigns is happening. How else can you explain that both Leon and Claire witness, for example, Mr. X lifting the chopper wreckage to make his chilling debut? What point is there to an A/B campaign if they nullify each other? They may as well have done away with the “2nd Run” concept altogether and just let you pick the Leon story or the Claire story. This is one of those things that bothers me the more I think about it. It didn’t affect me very much in the moment, but looking back I don’t know what to make of the story at all. Who did what? The 2nd Run is slightly shorter than the first, but I would have been content with something even shorter if it meant a more coherent narrative.
They’ve also cut at least a couple of the moments from the original game in which Leon and Claire check in with one another, which I found to be enough to greatly hurt the sense of connection between the two characters. The moments when they do interact are great, but I wished there’d been a few more. They also speed through the intro movie on 2nd Run, employing a “Last time on 24”-like highlight reel instead of giving it the space it needs to establish the crucial atmosphere and character dynamics. I didn’t like that.
Camera placement is a debate that will probably never die in the Resident Evil community, and it’s hard for me to even decide where I stand on the matter. The use of fixed camera angles in the classic games was a stroke of genius that allowed the games to mimic the tried-and-tested techniques of horror film, but occasionally the shifting angles caused player inputs to get tangled, resulting in unintended frustration. The over-the-shoulder cam used in the RE2 remake and most other recent RE titles gives the player complete control over what they see. This is a much friendlier interface for the action sequences, but it also means the game can’t force you to look at anything. On my first playthrough, I missed four or five classic moments including the first appearance of Mr. X because I happened to be looking elsewhere when they occurred. I see this as emblematic of the sometimes conflicting aims of game design, where a game is both a plaything and a cinematic experience targeting specific emotions. I’m not sure there’s a perfect solution to this, but I appreciate that the game essentially operates like an autonomous ecosystem. If you miss the action it’s your own fault, but it’s true to life in that sense.
↑ This is actually one rare moment where camera control is taken away and you have to look. Gah.
I don’t think there’s any fair way to conclude that the remake is better or worse than its predecessor, but I’ll happily submit that Resident Evil 2 is the best game ever announced via T-shirt. I think Capcom can look back with pride and say, "WE DID IT."

What someone can deal with for love (My Take on this ProJared Drama)
I was in a relationship just like this so it's one of the reasons I see her side. There will not be proof of Heidi and Jared talking about stopping the Poly. That’s a face to face convo. Seeing this whole thing going down scares the shit out of me. It's not like how people (Commander Holly looking at you) are putting it.
(when I use “like I did” I am referring to me with my ex)
All I say is this: I am going hypothetical on a lot of their issues: just saying it all starts and plays different but the ending is the same or worse.
TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN THERE: There isn't going to be proof because most of these fights between Jared and Heidi + after blow-ups (that everyone else saw) is because of the lying. You wind up begging for the truth and only get lies. It's the last steps in trying to keep a toxic relationship. She might have caught him cheating first (Like I did) and out of desperation to keep him she said: "let's try Poly" (again like I did). Being ignored for months by the person you love leaves you extremely lonely and starved for attention. Her "long-term 2nd bf" who was an out of state gave her attention and fill in the loneliness. Now am I saying it's ok? NOPE, but I do know what she is claiming because of my own stupidity.
I am not trying to justify what she has done: Only to give you someone else's experience of this type of abuse. If you find your self in this type of thing; leave: RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN. DO NOT STAY IN THE RELATIONSHIP IF IT'S LIKE THIS!
**warning below might contain adult subject matter**
What happens is it starts off like all other relationships even more so: The world feels like it stops. "PWLY" (Person who loves you) cons your full utter loyalty and trust from you. They make you think you seem to them like heaven and earth to get you into that state. They make you depend on them for money, food, etc. After they feel they have you they change; the mask comes off and the stranger who knows all about you and you know nothing of them comes out. (Yes, it sounds like it's some horror movie but it can and does happen.)
The fights will start slowly at first; nothing big really something like running late. The making up gets very fiery. It keeps going, a fight maybe every few months; to every other month; to every other week; and finally to every day. You start fighting your gut telling you it's time to leave because they said they loved you and needed only you; That they will do whatever they can to make you proud and happy of them. You fallow your heart, ignoring the warning signs; you try to leave many times, but they're begging for one more chance every time. they say that they know they made a mistake, but they can be better; be what you want them to be. So stupidly you believe them; trusting in them even though you know you shouldn't. From the person who was in Heidi's place, it's hard watching the person you love and adore change to someone you don't recognize. It's sad to watch.
You find out about the online stuff first; in her case, the lewds and since she is comfortable with her sexuality didn't really (but kind of did) pissed her off. Jared could have lied to her about all the ages of the pictures she's seen (we have no clue). She might have seen it (again like I did) as him wanting her to know his turn on's... A.K.A him being honest. So she starts making him stuff to explore his kinks. I bet most of the costumes he wears were made by or with her help (seeing Heidi is the cosplayer). Wanting him to be happy because she has started to see the stranger that lurks under the mask by this time. The stranger who wears your love's face is a nasty person. Cruel, they like to twist your words to make you look like you're being hateful. They say so much ill about you to your face you start to believe it. It gets worse if they have you isolated from your family and friends. Their voice plays in your head saying every hurtful thing. You wind up cry when you're alone and well YOU ARE alone all the time.
It depends on time about this next part. You find out about the cheating. I'm sorry to say this next part: HOLLY WASN'T THE FIRST, SHE'S THE LAST. Jared was most likely cheating on Heidi with other women. When you find out the first time the fight is the typical cheat fight. You threaten to leave them (like I did) and they start begging at first. They tell you things like "it will never happen again", "_______ means nothing to me! I LOVE YOU AND ONLY YOU!", or "I was weak and stupid, I hurt the one person (or sometimes they use the word “thing”) that's most precious to me: YOU" (queue in the crying and the grasping for your arms or waist). After your dumb ass gives them another chance the stranger comes back out. It might be an hour, a day, a week, but it comes out and they remind you they have you by the purse strings. They say "even if you wanted to, you can't afford to move. I pay for everything" or something to put you in your place because they made you dependent on them before the shit hit the fan. Where in the beginning everything was "ours" now is "mine" and "what is exactly yours again?". They remind you that you need them to survive.... they effectively own you.
Now abuse comes in many forms: Sexual, Mental, Emotional, Physical, etc.
From my own experience: I was told all the time "how lucky" I was for my ex to love me. The exact words carved into my mind; his voice comes in saying them when I try to sleep. Every hurtful comment like old rusted knives in the heart and when remembered they move cutting just a little deeper. "You're lucky I love you so much or I would have left you a long time ago!" or "you're not that smart to do that job". Mine compared my (for my own dignity let’s say) "body" to the woman he was hooking up with. (sorry I'm crying remembering this shit)
I remember blaming myself because of how he had browbeaten it into me verbally that I was worthless. To this day I live with what my ex did. I suffer from High anxiety and bipolar disorder both far worse now. I wanted to hurt him to show him how he was destroying the "person" he claimed to love. I wanted to destroy the things he loved far more than me to show him what he took from me. Now please re-read that; I wanted to take something that he loved so much like I loved him away. Was it wrong? Yes and I hated myself for it. Those feeling made me feel worse, made me think he was right; that I was the monster that destroyed our happiness. I wanted to die. I went back to that man twice thinking he would be who he use to be before this stranger with his face came.
He would sexually abuse me calling "surprise sex"; He would wait till I fell asleep and do "that" to me. I woke up to it and pleaded with him to stop. I laid there for hours crying. If I called the cops he would kick me out, and if I didn't (this is what I did) he might stop (he didn't). Whenever I needed reminding of who was in control he would take unwanted nor given liberties with my sleeping body.
My ex would lie to people telling them how horrid I was and how hellish it was in our home. He omitted the things he did to cause it. Like the fact, I was too scared to sleep at night and always playing video games to keep myself up. All his friends heard was "She's always up playing video games and not sleeping at night." and you sure can believe when someone asked why they got an "I don't know" or a strug.... in other words; not the truth.
My ex cheated on me many many times. To the point, I said let's try a Poly relationship in a desperate a tempts save a very toxic one. It failed, he used it to justify his cheating just like Jared. He couldn't be honest with me or the girls he hooked up with. He would tell them "how he has a horrid another half" and "how I was always cold-hearted" to him when in reality I was begging him to see a couple therapist and try to fix things. You know what I got as a reply "so I can have them telling me it's all my fault? Pfff Yeah right". Do you think we ever went? At less Jared and Heidi tried to fix their relationship. I never got that chance. I was mistreated every day. You now are wanting to ask why I stayed when he was doing all this nightmare fuel to me and mine is far far different than her reason: My child, the one being I went through hell for. When my ex was done with me he tossed me out, claimed I was not only abusive to him but to our child as well. The courts believe him because not only did he refuse to couple's therapy but to me having therapy for my personal issues. This made the courts see me as unfit. He would start fights so when his friends were over I would already be unconformable and snippy to him. Since they only saw my blowing up at him for a fight they didn’t see they agreed with him not knowing the whole story. Same with his family. He would tell them that I was always like that and there was no reasoning with me. Again he would omit the why I was in that state in the first place. It's easy to make yourself look innocent when you don't show the whole story.
By the time I offered Poly I was desperate to save my relationship with my ex. I told myself it was for my child but I didn't want to believe that I fell in love with a monster. When he brought in the girl he was cheating on me with for months as the girl he wanted as his 2nd I knew the truth. I knew he was cheating and I was trying to give him what he wanted. See he want both me and her; her because she was different than me; she was the party-girl where is I was the stay at home mom who makes home-cooked meal waiting at the dinner table. I tried to be supportive of him. I started to talk to another man (like Heidi did) for my own attention starvation. It was very personal and I should have left my ex when I felt the need to go elsewhere for the love I needed. I would still have full custody of my child and be in a better mental state. The only good thing is now that very same “2nd boyfriend” is my only love now. I did break up with my 2nd when My ex told me to. I’m lucky he still loved me when we found each other again.
Now my point is simple:
When someone doesn’t disclose their own words and actions truthfully with others it becomes easy to make those people see only what they want them to see. Of course, Holly thinks she knows the whole truth but she doesn’t. She wasn’t there for their private conversations, fights over the lies, half-truth, etc. None of you who came out to defend Jared and Heidi were there during those fights. You were given screen-shots by Jared to post with only a one-sided account of their private life. Do you not see that or is it that you don’t care? Do you all not realize you all kept away from her; that where Heidi would and should have been there she wasn’t? I hope you see that. I hope you realize that someone wants you to open your eyes. Heidi and Jared’s life was hell on them both. When they should have been working on bettering their marriage and working out the disconnect; they were looking elsewhere for something they should have had in each other. ALL OF US ARE THE OUTSIDERS not just online but those who are close to them. Put the stories together, where he says she blew-up ask why and demand to know the Whole story before you judge. Start asking for both sides if not from him then from her and add them together.
To Commander Holly, you are full of shit. You don’t know the whole story only what he told you and allowed you to see. DON’T FORGET THAT You were fucking HER HUSBAND instead of your own. I don’t know why or care that you cheated. You knew that he was married you should have said: “not until she tells me I can”. The only reason she would lose her shit (Like I did) all those times was because she told him she didn’t feel comfortable in private and that the Poly needed to stop and he agreed to it. Also, put your self in her spot because one day he might cheat on you too. How you gain the man is how you most likely lose them. (Look at the Kardashian baby daddy drama as proof). The fact she clearly said “GO AWAY” meant she didn’t want to share her husband with you. YET you kept on with it knowing full fucking well she didn’t want you around. YOU AND PROJARED are at fault, not just her. You hide behind mental health yet YOU caused her mental break down. You do understand that? The mere fact you were around when you should have walked away cause it. Doesn’t matter that she agreed to it. Once she realized that she wanted just her husband and told him she wanted just him; It was over. He probably did agree to give just them another chance. You and Jared are the worst kind of humans when she said no more poly; you both lied to her and kept it up. IT BECAME CHEATING AS SOON AS SHE SAID NO MORE. Not only are you two lying through your teeth about him being innocent but the fact of lying about it to ruin her. Stop gaslighting people and own up being a homewrecker who should have backed off when SHE told you to. I don’t see you and Jared being together, he used you to fight his battle. He’ll dump you in half a year to maybe under two... because that’s what happens to the girl my ex finally replace me with. Just stay the fuck out of it.
To ProJared: Please shut Commander Holly up or don’t but she is going to get you in deeper shit than you already are. Also, love how you are using her to do your dirty work. If all the other stuff is true I hope you rot in jail.
To AtelierHeidi You are in the wrong. It was needed for the underage he got leweds from but you didn’t need to air his cheating. That was between you four because wasn’t she married until recently. You should have left when you first found out he was this way. And I am the first person that will say “yes I understand why you wanted to ruin his show” but you need to own your own part in this. The abuse wasn’t one-sided and you know it. How I know is because I would insult my ex the same as he was me; I reflected what he said and did to a point (I think doing something to someone in their sleep is wrong there for never would do it) in front of his friends to knock him down a peg or two, he punished me for it when we were alone. Your text back and forth with the threats of ruining his show reminds me of my own hate text to my ex. I understand because I have been there; felt that. You are enjoying the destruction you caused, I hope you don’t regret it. You ruined his life, don’t let your actions ruin yours.
Oh, and if you’re lying Heidi I hope he nails you to the cross because you would be one of the reason abuse victims are discredited.
So morals of my story: Those who know nothing but one side of the story knows really nothing and Leave when your gut tells you to.
SO THANKS FOR REMINDING ME OF MY OWN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP FROM HELL YOU STUPID FUCKS!

Beginning Thoughts of the Fall Anime Season 2017 . . .
Welp, fall is here, and as usual, it is time for me to do my annual first impressions of the season’s anime titles. My gods if you thought the amount of shows I checked out last season was a lot, this season’s amount is insane. This season, so far, I have checked out 22 shows thus far and plan for at least 7 more to pick up. Insane, right? So how do they stack up so far? Let’s see. Also, please keep in mind, that these are solely based off of the first one or two episodes, and are purely my opinion, so if my opinion is different than yours, then I’d love to here it. Also, I will try to remain as spoiler free as possible.
Netojuu no Susume: Studio Signal.MD
Dropped. Alright, so I feel like I have to mention this. I’m a serious gamer. More specifically, I love me some MMOs. How much you ask? Well, so much so that I actually met my husband on World of Warcraft. Insane right? I mean my god you do not want to see our /played time on that game. So, needless to say, I am a bit critical on gaming anime because of this, because I know what it’s like. This anime was just. . . . cringey. I found myself sighing every chance I got and by the 20 minute mark, completely turning it off. Everything about the first episode was just . . . bad. There’s really just no redeeming qualities. . . well, one line said by the Guild Master which was something along the lines of “you have no idea what her irl gender is.” I laughed. It’s accurate. 85% of female toons you see on wow are actually guys. Anyways, moving on.
Evil or Live: Haoliners Animation
Dropped. Mmmm I had such high hopes. After reading the summary, I will admit, I was hyped for this show. On Paper, this show sounds wonderful. I thought it was going to be some horror psychological thriller that at the end of it left you questioning the very meaning of the world around you or something. Instead, what happened? I . . .don’t even know. The series starts off with massive amounts of Live Action, which, while being completely unexpected, I didn’t mind so much; the series became an instant drop for me when the MC and Co were clearly showing a break from reality and needed actual mental help, was beaten instead. It wasn’t “horror” or “edgy” it was just poor writing. Needless to say, I have dropped it.
Just Because!: Studio Pine Jam
Dropped. For no other reason that fuck it’s boring. I fell asleep watching it not once, but twice. It was that boring. This series proves that even the prettiest of shows can bore you to death.
Omiai Aite wa Oshiego Tsuyoki na, Mondaiji: Studio Seven
Porn. With Plot. Alright, so this is an actual hentai series. Not like Soft-Core either like Hajimete no Gal was last season. This is an actual hentai series, and if you could believe it, it’s actually more plot focused and semi-interesting than 95% of hentai out there.. . . Well, as interesting as a hentai series about a female teacher and a student banging and “engaged” can be. Don’t get me wrong here, it’s totally trash, but hey, each episode is only four minutes, so I’m going to keep watching this trash just a bit longer to see where it goes.
Sengoku Night Blood: Typhoon Graphics
Mmmm Still waiting for the day with they make a good anime based off of an Otome Game. Alright, so here’s the story. Girl gets sent back into another world and gains a harem. A vampire harem. That’s it. I’ve saved you the trouble of checking this series out. You’re welcome.
Urahara: Studios Emt^2 and Shirogumi
Dropped. Instant Drop. Jesus Christ that animation is fucking trash. You have two studios working on this series, and the animation still looks that garbagey?!?! How?!?!?! I can’t even with this. . . Ugh, nope, moving on.
Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara: Creators in Pack
Yet another series that will probably be dropped halfway through. Honestly, there’s just nothing that really happens in this series, and I know it’s really hard for anything to happen in a four minute long series, but literally nothing happens. Wife comes home. Husband makes her drink. Wife gets tipsy. Thank you husband. I mean the main reason why I’m going to be sticking it out just a bit longer is to keep getting cocktail recipes haha.
Imouto Sae Ireba Ii: Sliver Link Studios
Will probably be dropped. Is it just me or is this series like Silver Link’s answer to A-1′s EroManga Sensei? Honestly, this show is meh at best so far. The art is nothing too great, and the story screams EroManga, and since I wasn’t a fan, I really don’t see myself watching more than three episodes.
Boku no Kanojo ga Majimesugiru Sho-Bitch na Ken: Studio Diomedea
I started watching it with hopes of it doing two things. One, fill the hole in my heart that was left when Hajimete no Gal ended; and two, explain what the hell a Sho-Bitch is. In all honestly though, this show is probably going to be dropped. While the art is generic, the characters are bland and too common; I also the comedy too forced at time and repeatable. Yes, we understand main waifu really just wants to figure out what Haruka likes, and obviously misinterprets everything, but does that really have to be the joke every single time?
Inuyashiki: Studio MAPPA
Ah, the latest from Studio MAPPA. I have one question: MAPPA, what the fuck? Let me clarify. The opening few minutes of the first episode made me feel. Fuck, I almost started crying. It was depressing and yet the story was just relatable and beautiful all at the same time. I was feeling feels I didn’t want to feel. It really kept true to the Drama tag, which I love. I’m a sucker for some hardcore drama filled series. Then. . . .it got weird. Some weird like mecha space alien thing weird. So, again, MAPPA, what the fuck? Don’t get me wrong here. I will be continuing to watch this solely because despite the series taking that weird turn, in no way did that make the actual tone any less enjoyable. Plus, the art style is so unique to the show, I’m curious as to where it can go from here.
Mahoutsukai no Yome: Wit Studio
Alright, I’m a fan. This has to be a contender for Anime of the Season, and we aren’t even three episodes into it yet. It’s wonderful, and not only one of my favorites from this season so far, but my favorite thing Wit Studio has ever done, (and yes, that just brought me a ton of hate from SnK fans haha). I can see and agree with the hype this series has had. Honestly, check it out. It’s good and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
Blend S: A-1 Pictures
I found my Moe-Blob for the season, and I’m so happy. I actually really like this series so far. It was adorable, and literally just what I want in my seasonal moe-blob. It’s nothing too driven plot wise, and definitely won’t be anime of the season or anything like that; it’s literally just Cute Girls waitressing in this cute cafe. Regardless, I’m definitely going to continue to watch it for a bit longer at least.
Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou: Studio White Fox
Keep your eye on this one this season. It’s probably going to be the Dark Horse of this season. In all honestly, I became instantly hooked watching the first episode. The tone at the start was so eerie and grim that I found myself getting literal goosebumps. Maybe it’s the high I’m on after the Made in Abyss ending, or just wanting to find something to fill the void that series has left me with, but I’m getting serious MiA vibes. I’m hoping this series is even half as good as MiA was. Also, I’m a major fan already of how unique the art is for this show.
Ousama Game The Animation: Studio Seven
I’m biased. Period. I will be watching this show no matter how terrible it could ever get solely because my favorite Seiyuu is the lead. Mamoru is a God, and I will watch it religiously every week. That being said, I can tell you that this show is edgy as fuck, and with it being one of two survival game anime out right now this season, this one is definitely the weaker, edgier of the two. It is a pretty cool concept though, and I’m already a fan of the survival game concept, that I don’t mind watching this one until the end. I would also like to warn that this one is definitely gory so if you don’t like that than this isn’t for you.
Konohana Kitan: Studio Lerche
CUTE LITTLE FOX GIRLS. I REPEAT, CUTE LITTLE FOX GIRLS. Having read the summary for the series prior, and seeing both the Seinen and Shoujo Ai tag on it and that it would be done by Lerche, it became an instant check out at least, and I’m glad I did. This series is the calming pallet cleanser. It’s the show where you can turn off your mind and just watch the cuteness. Plus, did I mention cute little fox girls? What more do you need?
Black Clover: Studio Pierrot
Alright, I’m split in two for this. Part of me wants me to look at this show for what it is: a stereotypical shounen series, with decent animation, predictable plot and bad voice acting, if you saw the first episode you’d know what I’m talking about. This show screams Naruto, Fairy Tail and Bleach rip off; and hell, since I hate Naruto, never got into Bleach, and am still VERY pissed at Fairy Tail, combining the three into one really just makes me both cringe and glare at the screen. Evil Glare. A glare that if I could, would totally shoot lasers out and everything. I mean hell, it’s even done by the same studio as Naruto. Regardless, the tons and tons of shounen I’ve seen makes me just feel like this is repeating it all. That’s one part of me. The other part of me enjoys this show, solely for the fact that my husband LOVES the Black Clover manga, so watching it with him makes me at least want to give it a chance. I do however doubt it will be as big as people hype it up to be, and if it does get big it will be nowhere near as good quality wise as a lot of other shounens, and will take a lot for me to become a fan.
Juuni Taisen: Graphinica
Without a doubt, my favorite from this season. I’m hooked. This series has it all: unique character designs, well executed art, and a killer story line, (pun intended). Mmmmm this story is wonderful. It hooks you from the start, which is to be expected since the original source is written by the same original writer for the Monogatari Series. There’s plot twists and betrayals and just epicness. It also has one of the best openings and closings of the season. Side Note: THE PSYCHOTIC LITTLE USAGI BOY IS BEST BOY AND I WILL FIGHT ANYONE WHO SAYS OTHERWISE, AND IF HE DOESN’T WIN I WILL RIOT.
Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru: Washio Sumi no Shou: Studio Gokumi
When I first saw that Yuki Yuno was getting another season, I was fucking thrilled. Yuki Yuno was a magical girl series that I fell in love with not only because of the Madoka Magica vibes it had, but because of the beautiful art and animation and vibrant colors it used. It’s visually stunning. So, how is the prequel turning out? Still just as stunning. In all honestly, I’m going to love this series provided it stays true to the themes and tones of the first season, and if the opening episodes are anything to say about the rest of the series, then I know it will. Plus, who isn’t up for Magical Girls this season?
Osomatsu-san 2nd Season: Studio Pierrot
I actually genuinely missed this show. My gods this show is a gift. This has to be one of the underapprieciated comedy gems to come out in the recent years, and it fills me with joy knowing that it still shines just like the first season did. I enjoy watching the episodic skits of everyone’s favorite sextuplets. Seriously, why have you not started this show?
Shokugeki no Soma: J.C.Staff
DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG I’VE WAITED TO SEE MY SON KUGA ANIMATED?!!??! TOO LONG. This is hands down the best season of Food Wars yet, and we are barely a couple episodes into it. I love the pacing of this season, and having being a manga reader, I can confirm for you that it’s completely accurate with the manga thus far. J.C Staff is clearly showing that they still care about Food Wars and aren’t rushing with the season. Also, thank the gods for the 24 episode season. THAT’S MORE EPISODES OF MY PRECIOUS KUGA.
3-Gatsu no Lion 2nd Season: Studio Shaft
I cried. I fucking cried. Hard. My god I missed this series. Everything about the first episode was fantastic. The music and animation were spot on, but of course nothing out of the ordinary for the phenomenal Studio Shaft, but what did I love most you ask? Character Development. MY FUCKING GOD. Compare Rei to the start of Season one, and you’d never think it’s the same person. I can’t stress that enough. If this first episode is a sign on how amazing the rest of this season is going to be then I’m beyond fucking happy. This is the series I’ve been waiting for since the start of the year.
Gintama. Porori-hen: Bandai Namco Pictures
Has there ever been like a bad season of Gintama? Like Ever? All this season has proved to me is: one, life is boring and dull without Gintama. Two, Gintama is the king of comedy series. Three, Gintama is without a doubt one of the greatest series of all time. This season is hilarious and easily makes me burst out laughing from start to finish. Thank you Gintama, I’ve truly missed you.
Ballroom e Youkoso: Production I.G.
How is the second half of the season you ask? *Insert Pouting Face Here* Fuck you, Chi-chan. Worst Girl 2017. THERE I SAID IT. YEAH, I SAID IT. WHAT YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT? #BRINGBACKBESTGIRL2017 Like, don’t get me wrong, I’m glad Tartara has a partner now, but like seriously why her? -.- Why couldn’t Mako just be his partner forever and they could live happily ever after?
So, yeah, those are my thoughts so far on the Fall Anime 2017 season. Let me know yours, and if there is anything I’m not watching, and should be, then please tell me! I love recommendations, and I already know of a few that I need to pick up. . . .

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 07/11/2020 (Ariana Grande, Bring Me the Horizon)
You know, it’s odd how that despite two pretty massive albums dropping, both having an impact on the chart, we actually have less debuts than the scattered mess of singles from last week, thanks to silly UK Singles Chart rules. Regardless, this week’s #1 is still “positions” by Ariana Grande and welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS.
Dropouts & Returning Entries
The biggest drop off the chart this week is undoubtedly the #1 hit “Before You Go” by Lewis Capaldi, exiting the UK Top 75 after a run lasting 50 weeks. Nothing really compares to the weight of that drop-out but I guess we do have “GREECE” by DJ Khaled featuring Drake, “Heather” by Conan Grey. “Bando Diaries” by Dutchavelli, “Heart of Glass” by Miley Cyrus, “forget me too” by Machine Gun Kelly featuring Halsey and “Hold” by Chunkz and Young Filly, only lasting a measly two weeks but still peaking high. There is actually a theme to our returning entries as all of these are spooky scary Halloween-themed tracks. The classic “Thriller” by the ever-controversial King of Pop Michael Jackson is back at #57, “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker, Jr. Is back at #54 – this is my personal favourite of the bunch, mostly thanks to Neil Cicierega – and even “Monster Mash” by Bobby Boris Pickett is back at #50. Oh, and “5AM” by M Huncho and Nafe Smallz is back at #66 but that’s just scarily bad. The biggest fall this week was for “Cool with Me” by Dutchavelli and M1llionz down to #64 whilst the biggest gain was unfortunately for “Whoopty” by CJ at #48. Honestly, what’s the appeal here? Sigh, at least we have some really interesting hijinks this week, pretty fitting for a week that saw the messiest US election in history, and I won’t write this in order so you won’t see what I’m leading up to until a while after you read this part but there is some incredible stuff here. You know what’s not incredible?
NEW ARRIVALS
#74 – “Too Many Nights” – 220 KID and JC Stewart
Produced by 220 KID, Joe Janiak and Mark Ralph
I started off this episode by writing about the Bring Me the Horizon songs first. Not only is the album good and I had recently listened to it, but I had a lot more to say about the tracks, obviously since it’s not something you see on the charts every day and there’s a lot more to discuss in these tracks. Hence, after writing nearly 2,000 words on the metalcore boys alone, I have a question: do I really need to cover this emotionless tropical house-pop crap manufactured by labels and DJs who rarely find any interesting instrumentation, songwriting ideas or even samples to cover up their complete lack of innovation and at times even talent, for a quick buck and stupid amounts of unwarranted chart success? I don’t want to say I’m angry and I don’t want to seem pretentious but music is art. Art is, as a result of the society that produces it, a product, but even #1 hits and major-label records are still pieces of art. They can be analysed, appreciated and listened to with a lot of thought and detail. I cannot see that in “Too Many Nights” by 220 KID and JC Stewart. To me, this is purely a product. I’m taking this way too seriously but this really exemplifies what people hate about pop music in three minutes and eight seconds of cheap plastic dance music. Next.
#67 – “Ginger” – Wizkid featuring Burna Boy
Produced by P2J
Wizkid and Burna Boy are both highly acclaimed Nigerian singers and given everything that’s happening here recently, it’s no surprise Wizkid released an album that I would think touches on these issues, Made in Lagos, which is a name I can infer means he will explore Nigerian identity and what it means to be from Lagos and make it big in music. Wizkid is one of the big stars and pioneers of modern African pop music and whilst I should be interested in the album, I haven’t had the time to give it a spin yet so I’ll take this first impression from the track with Burna Boy. This is a pretty sweet tropical tune with an infectious hook referencing the traditional West African dish of jollof rice, and whilst the language barrier does prevent me from fully understanding the song, I can gather that this is a mix of a hook-up jam and typical rap stuff, with him flexing how he lives nice and if people want smoke, he’s got smoke, and a lot about this woman gyrating on him. Seriously, that’s the whole first verse, which only arrives after a really awkward pause. The second verse is kind of awkward here and Wizkid’s voice and flow have never done much for me, especially here where both he and Burna Boy sound checked-out. Burna Boy’s contributions are pretty much relegated to half of the chorus and an outro that quickly fades away and soon enough, this really slow, kind of uninteresting song has already finished. I’m not personally a fan of this but I am still interested in that album – I like the song with Skepta even if it does sound very much like “Ginger”, just with a stronger guest. Now onto the big story, or at least my big story, on the chart.
#55 – “1x1” – Bring Me the Horizon featuring Nova Twins
Produced by Jordan Smith and Oliver Sykes
I never read Kerrang! magazine, mostly because I’m not a loser [citation needed]. I understand that they originated in the 1980s as a metal-focused magazine but I wasn’t there for that. I was there for the Kerrang! TV era of pop-punk whining, scene-core screaming, nu-metal grunting, emo crooning and the Bloodhound Gang for some reason. Listening to this new Bring Me the Horizon album, titled Post Human: Survival Horror, took me back to that place. That feeling of classic Metallica followed by less classic Foo Fighters followed by the absolutely not classic Medina Lake (some of their stuff still slaps, however derivative) – oh, yeah, and like 10 minutes of adverts after six minutes of music. That feeling of All Time Low and You Me at Six playing back to back and being completely incapable of telling the difference between the two. “If we ain’t got that then we ain’t got much and we ain’t got nothing.” They were simpler times. I may be mashing up eras here but it still stands. Hell, the BABYMETAL tracks even took me back to the “Flashing Lights” disclaimers of all things. Rest in peace to Scuzz by the way, and, yes, I said BABYMETAL, we’ll get to that in a bit. So, yeah, I really liked that throwback to turn-of-the-millennium mallcore, but it does keep itself fresh and interesting enough throughout, especially with Sykes’ unique delivery and topical albeit ham-fisted edgy lyrics. You can say a lot about Bring Me the Horizon but at this point at least they definitely have pretty defining characteristics and a lot of likeability even if they do like to stick to a formula at times that makes it pretty obvious where their influences lie. That said, I do think the album becomes a slog by track seven, and it’s a lot duller than it probably should be for the final stretch. Unfortunately, this is track seven. I’m not familiar with the Nova Twins but they’re a punk-rap duo from London and honestly I am interested in checking out that debut album but I’m not really impressed by them or the metalcore boys – which is somehow a better band name than “Bring Me the Horizon” – on this track. Again, there is a formula to the metalcore boys’ banger tracks, and here it feels particularly stale and awkward, thanks to the loudness war that’s present in the album as a whole (Linkin Park’s influence shows up everywhere, even in the production) and the awkward trap elements shoved into the percussion of the first and second verses. I think Amy Love of Nova Twins obviously flows better on it than Oli Sykes who should have handed everything that’s not the chorus – one of the most cookie-cutter on the record – to the Twins, because he sounds pretty off here. There’s a lot less “epic edgy” lyrical content (I’m not sure if that’s a compliment) but that leads to kind of vague and disjointed ideas that don’t all line up to the core theme of the song, which is human guilt for the sins of man or some crap like that. Boys, when you interpolate four of your own songs AND Linkin Park, you’ve got to realise you’re re-treading some ground here. Not even the typical Bring Me the Horizon drop into the metal breakdown from an electronic bridge really feels like it’s worth it or climactic here, which is a shame but who needs the Nova Twins when the metalcore boys have a collaboration with another unique all-female rock duo...?
#51 – “Kingslayer” – Bring Me the Horizon featuring BABYMETAL
Produced by Jordan Fish and Oliver Sykes
When I saw BABYMETAL on this tracklist, I was amused and kind of laughed it off. These guys do have some pretty bizarre collaborations – they have songs with Halsey and Grimes – but BABYMETAL? I remember them when they were half-awesome Japanese pop-metal band and half-complete and utter meme in the early 2010s, and I knew that they had continued being so, mostly because the last time I heard from them they were playable in Super Mario Maker. Seriously, look it up. Now when I saw BABYMETAL on the charts, nearing the top 50 no less, I was ecstatic and honestly shocked. Needless to say this is their first appearance on the chart and whilst metal bands in the 2000s like Slipknot and System of a Down had genuine hits, outside of, fittingly, Bring Me the Horizon, it’s unheard of, especially for a Japanese girl group who happen to have freaking shredders playing on stage behind them. I haven’t listened to a BABYMETAL album but I feel like I don’t need to because of how much they’ve made an impression through singles, videos and live performances. Judas Priest’s Rob Halford called BABYMETAL “the future of metal” and whilst I’m not into the metal scene, I’m half-inclined to both agree and add Bring Me the Horizon to that conversation. I’m just amazed there is a cyber-kawaii metal song on the charts. I’m honestly astonished. Oh, and it helps that the song is incredible. On the album there’s a short interlude that functions as an introduction but honestly the short, aggressive synth riff followed by an immediate crash into the metal groove and Sykes yelling his lungs out works better on its own to just shove you face-first into some insane music. I love how that opening yell is chopped up and digitally re-arranged in the background of the chaotic instrumentation. The cutesy and bleep-bloopy synths that are not new to Bring Me the Horizon’s repertoire are used to their full potential here and yes, it is complete sensory overload, but it’s also kawaii-cyber metal. I mean, what did you expect? It also thematically makes sense. The song is about Call of Duty but it’s also an ode to the people willing to stand up for what they believe in even if it’s illegal and even if it doesn’t abide by rules and regulations. The album is full of these songs that fully support a revolutionary attitude and a clear frustration with keeping up with the old guard for all these years. You can hear how fed up and sick and tired of the political hellscape Sykes is in his shifts between pitch-shifted whining not dissimilar to Blink-182 and gravelly yelling straight out of extreme metal, except unlike most extreme metal I’ve heard, this is actually mixed properly. This track and especially the opener, “Dear Diary”, have so much anarchic energy and that is what I love about the hardcore punk edge to a lot of the album, not necessarily as much sonically as that in content and lyrical themes, where Sykes presents his inner mental struggles and contextualises them on the world stage, making an album that tackles the pandemic, racism and corruption vaguely and with poetic wit without being shallow or impersonal. Most songs that relate to the social distancing will not use the depressive emotional bloodletting of “Teardrops”, the subtly ominous yet still anthemic choruses about lockdown in “Obey” (seriously, these guys can make even YUNGBLUD sound listenable) and even the slow, sour conflict with both Mother Nature and general isolation on the closing ballad that has a name way too long for me to recite, as much as I enjoy upping the word count on every episode. Sykes’ verse in “Kingslayer” discusses opposing points of political opposition and protest, on one hand wanting to express how sick people are of going through the capitalist machine only to be spat back out again but also asking him the condescending question of if he really wants to poke the governmental bear. On the pre-chorus, he voices those frustrations in profanity-laden motivation that is asking not just himself but the general public to wake up, not that they’re unaware of how unfair the system is but instead acting as a call to action. Su-Metal of BABYMETAL takes this ode in a different angle, seeing revolutionaries as idolised figures, so much so that the chorus works as a confession of love or just awe in how the “kingslayer” is destroying castles in the sky and will save “us” from the darkness and from the struggles that the corrupt elite forces onto the populace. In the verse Su-Metal juxtaposes the imagery in the hook of some kind of medieval warrior (“angel of the blade”) with the near-incomprehensible verse, which is half-sung in Japanese with a cry for help responded to in commanding English, which I see as a reaction from the authority that undermines these problems. They call the revolutionary “artificial” and “modified” in a condescending, mocking tone, as well as using so much digital jargon that the verse becomes practically meaningless, especially backed by the heavy, loud music that drowns some of the messaging about and very much intentionally. It also seems pretty intentional that this song sounds like a take on an anime opening, as all of this cyber-punk imagery and anti-authority lyrical content feels a lot sharper when coated in references and criticism of mass-media. Oh, and it also helps that the song rocks, Su-Metal’s melodies are beautifully placed against a frenetic, monotone bass note in her verse, and that final chorus is absolutely perfect. That rapid-fire addition to the chorus took me by surprise on first listen and just completes the song for me. The song ends with one last wake-up call from Sykes about the rabbit hole before his yell is manipulated, screwed and played with by the production, rendering his scream inhuman... and followed by the playful, childlike inflections of BABYMETAL. If we don’t at least try to change in this time, the generations after us will suffer from our mistakes and missed opportunities. Man, this song is a rollercoaster that starts with drum and bass rhythms and ends with Oli Sykes growling gratuitous profanities that get close to feeling like he’s insulting the listener – it’s really brutal – and I’m here for it all the way. There have been songs on REVIEWING THE CHARTS that I like and that I love and whilst I know this won’t stick around (it is still cyber-kawaii metal), this is undoubtedly the best song I think I’ve ever covered on this show and might as well just be one of the best songs I’ve heard this year and maybe ever. I adore this track, please, PLEASE check it out.
#46 – “Flooded” – M Huncho and Nafe Smallz
Produced by Sean Murdz
Okay, seriously for a second: who cares? There’s nothing interesting here. A synth-based soundscape with some cheap flute loops drowned out by trap percussion that doesn’t even drop in, it just awkwardly fades in – yes, even the 808s – and Auto-Tuned mumbling from a nasal-voiced child with an unbearable falsetto. What is the appeal? None of them sound interested, there are no bars of any interest or even a funny line, not even unintentionally. D-Block Europe make me laugh but this tragically awful duo make me bored to death. M Huncho has a cool mask he wears and I wish his gimmick was more than just that and you know, actually translated to the music, but he doesn’t sound intimidating or like a villain. He just sounds like some dude who decided to rap barely on the beat of badly-mixed type beat with bass mastering that should be pitied. He did have a fluke song that kind of slapped called “Pee Pee”, which just comes to show that the more ridiculous and stupid he gets, the more vaguely entertaining he is. So why is he this dull and lame?! The flow is either talking over a beat that refuses to stay still but never truly reaches any kind of climax or even build-up, or just trap-rap word association. “I flooded the chain, it’s like a lake, we runnin’ the game, you pressin’ the brakes.” There’s nothing here, absolutely nothing, and these two hacks cannot sell it. I’m just looking for some effort and even if something is effortless, at least have the charisma to make it sound like you give a damn because this is pretty inexcusable.
#35 – “Paradise” – MEDUZA and Dermot Kennedy
Produced by MEDUZA
I’m tired and I feel like I’m almost at breaking point with these songs. What would usually be generic and uninteresting is sounding offensively bad to me right now and I’m not sure why. That doesn’t really matter all too much to me though as this show has never been an in-depth critical assessment... okay, well sometimes it becomes as such but these are usually just my first impressions of tracks that happen to debut that week on the UK Singles Chart and this can range from volatile frustration to immediate adoration to not giving a rat’s ass about a single one of the songs that debut, depending on how I feel that day. That said, this song is fine. I actually really like Kennedy’s delivery, even if his rougher edges are smoothened and cleaned up by the vocal production here, which is pretty reverb-drenched but does allow for Kennedy to actually release rather than editing the vocals to sound really tight and closed-in... except for that really weak, pathetic drop but I do like the lyrical content, fittingly about distanced relationships as England enters a second lockdown. There’s little to say here but it’s worth a listen.
#32 – “Four Notes – Paul’s Tune” – Paul Harvey, Daniel Whibley and BBC Philharmonic
Produced by ???
No production credits for this one for whatever reason. Anyway, I am tired to the point of just complete speechless confusion at why this charted, and especially so high, rather than having any intrigue in why, but I looked it up anyway. Paul Harvey is a man from Sussex with dementia who is able to improvise beautiful piano melodies with only four notes as a reference point, hence the name. This was recorded by his son Nick and posted onto Twitter, where it soon became viral. This composition was then arranged by Daniel Whibley and recorded by the BBC’s Philharmonic Orchestra to be released as a charity single with proceeds being split between the Alzheimer’s Society and Music for Dementia. This isn’t a song I can critique. The arrangement is really pretty and it was in the original video, with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra only serving to make it sound grander and fitting for a single release. Dementia, Alzheimer’s and any kind of brain disorder are all really tragic and really depressing things to happen to anybody, especially to the people it tends to affect: the elderly. It’s sweet that this is a single and I like that it charted high so those organisations that can assist science in treating these disorders and give help to those with family members diagnosed with and suffering from brain disorders have more funding. The song sounds good, it’s mixed well and honestly it’s pretty gorgeous at times, and if this helps people, then it’s done its job, and I commend Harvey and his son, Daniel Whibley and the BBC for letting this happen. Now for something completely different.
#26 – “Deluded” – Tion Wayne featuring MIST
Produced by Steel Banglez and Chris Rich Beats
Steel Banglez, Tion Wayne and MIST? God, maybe we are returning to the new normal; this is a 2019 line-up. Tion Wayne is a character and a presence on the track always and MIST is quite the opposite, but that “So High” song with Fredo was pretty cool, I suppose. Tion Wayne has always been more of an entertaining presence than half this crop of drill rappers, even if his flow and bars suffer from it, but he’s always a lot more fun and he does have a couple punchlines that hit. This particular song uses that “mm-mm” flow that originated on his track “Keisha & Becky”, and both him and MIST sound really interested and enthused here, as they trade bars in the verses and support each other with ad-libs throughout. The two seem to actually have some chemistry and it’s not an unnatural collaboration. Even in Tion Wayne’s solo chorus, MIST is shouting behind him, and it overall makes the song really aggressive and punchy, even if some of the lyrics are just kind of uninteresting or even confusing, like the oddly-specific jab at an unnamed crack abuser, always referred to as “you” in the song. Is the listener a crack addict? Should I be scared? I’m not entirely sure, but this kind of slaps, especially the keys and vocal sample in the outro. It kind of reminds me of a harsher version of the #1 hit back from 2018, “Funky Friday” by Dave and Fredo, except these guys are legitimately menacing in the song and the bass-heavy drill beat never subtracts from that, not to say that “Funky Friday” is a bad song (far from it). It’s not about being able to convince me with lyrics, it’s about being able to sell what you say effectively and interestingly – not even uniquely, but just in a way that’s presentable and leads to genuinely good music. M Huncho and Nafe Smallz could take a couple hints from these guys.
#16 – “motive” – Ariana Grande and Doja Cat
Produced by TBHits, Joseph L’Etranger, Mr. Franks and Murda Beatz
Murda Beatz, huh? Well, I haven’t listened to Positions yet, mostly because I’ve been bumping Goddamn Bring Me the Horizon for the past week, but also because 14 tracks of the same song doesn’t necessarily interest me. For the sake of the show I probably should check the album out – it’s not that long – but don’t expect me to have that a positive opinion on it. I said my peace on Grande last week and given the singles I seriously doubt this album will erase my continuous issues with her projects. I’ve always felt that despite her unbelievable talent, she is also unbelievably disinterested and detached from her own music to the point where whatever artistic contributions and creativity she and her team had is completely washed out by the questionable production, weak-sauce trap beats and misguided song ideas (I still roll my eyes on “7 rings” and “sweetener”). From what I’ve heard from this new album, it has a lot more classic R&B keys and strings undercut by trap skitters and modern vocal production, and this is pretty clear in “motive”, a funky house-inspired dance-pop tune that feels miles less robotic and factory-made than most house on the charts, instead going for an organic fast-paced groove and mildly annoying vocal samples. The trap breakdown in the pre-chorus is what gives Murda Beatz the right to put his producer tag at the start of the song, which is honestly just funny. I do like the verses but the chorus doesn’t hit in quite the same way it should, possibly that pre-chorus is just garbage and it doesn’t build to an effective crescendo for the chorus to build up on off of whispery murmuring. Oh, and Doja Cat is here, which took me by surprise when she started lazily rapping since Ari actually sounded like her in the second verse. In fact, this is a Doja Cat song in all but lead artist credit and honestly, the song kind of suffers because of it. This is decent, I suppose, but a collaboration that doesn’t favour either artist.
#9 – “34+35” – Ariana Grande
Produced by ProdByXavi, Mr. Franks, Peter Lee Johnson and TBHits
Ariana Grande’s albums have disproportionate producer credit to producer effort ratio. At least there’s not a M-M-M-Murda on this one. The song title is stupid but this was pushed to radio so I guess it has to be family-friendly PG clean to some degree. It is interesting how it goes for the absurdity of being dirty over Disney-like orchestral blossoms and pretty nice-sounding strings, but it doesn’t go far enough other than the chorus. It’s missing a good, effective, funny opening line, and I feel that the verses are pretty lacking. The pre-chorus is almost cringeworthy and just going into bizarre levels of horny on main but that is very much the point of the whole thing. “You know I keep it squeaky”? I find it almost difficult to take this song as anything more than a joke, but she does have some pretty commanding tones when she asks him to “just give me them babies” and the snarky laugh in the intro combined with pretty slick albeit absolutely stupid punchlines that go from so bad it’s good territory to just unabashedly ridiculous and embracing itself as such. I love the falsetto in the chorus even if it is just building up to that stupid title that is nowhere near as clever as Ari thinks it is. By the way, she completely delivers here and it’s a pretty damn great performance from her, one of her most enthusiastic on record, even with her now typical “yuh”s spread throughout. Hell, the rap verse actually works this time mostly because her charisma actually comes through and the trap skitter has some energy this time, unlike “7 rings”. I don’t get the end where she says she was never good at maths, though, because “34 + 35 = 69” is a pretty solid and correct albeit obviously simple calculation. You got the answer, give it a tick in a different colour pen.
Got the neighbours yellin’, “Earthquake!” / 4.5 when I make the bed shake
There’s a song in the top 10 that uses the moment magnitude scale as a sex metaphor. 2020, everyone.
Conclusion
Let’s cut to the chase: Best of the Week goes to Bring Me the Horizon and BABYMETAL for “Kingslayer”, which should have been obvious. I’m so glad I expanded beyond the top 40 on this show. It means I can talk about songs like that in depth. Honourable Mention might actually go to Ariana Grande’s “34+35” on plain fun alone, although the similarly numeric “1x1” did get close. The Worst of the Week is really a toss-up because there was a lot of disposable filler between the good and interesting stuff this week had to offer. I’ll probably go with “Flooded” by M Huncho and Nafe Smallz, with a Dishonourable Mention to “Too Many Nights” by 220 KID and JC Stewart. Both are just impressively lacking in effort or any appeal I can search for, but knowing my luck, they’ll both be “Old Town Road”-level big. Here’s our top 10:

I just want to say, and I haven't had any coffee yet, so I hope this makes sense/doesn't sound rude, but I don't *like*, at all, being someone whose opinion is somehow more important, final, or intimidating than anyone else's. My blog is literally just *my blog*, which I have been talking on for years about Supernatural and people enjoy talking back to me. Sometimes we agree, sometimes we don't, sometimes I grudgingly reblog 100 pieces of meta on a subject I kinda hate or am disinterested in (like Amara after season 10 or Jack after season 12 for "disinterested" examples although I'm not gonna spill what I hate :P) because I have weird principles about at least trying to collect meta that makes sense to me or something...
But yeah, my meta is one thing, my opinions, as I said last night but I'll repeat here in another post, are entirely my own thing and your opinions are entirely your own thing, and they do NOT cancel each other out because I gob on all the time about mine on a blog which has a fair number of followers and a large collection of meta to trick people into thinking I know what I'm talking about all the time. All I've done is survive multiple mass-exoduses of fans who got fed up with the show and its ways before it ended, and left, leaving me in a weird position of being kinda prominent and well-established by sheer attrition that much smarter or more talented people up and left to greener pastures. I don't feel like any part of this process makes me somehow better and scarier than everyone else. In real life I'm an awkwardly laughing nerd who falls asleep in the corner at parties and has been keeping an intense fandom blog for like 4 years, to whatever detriment to the personality that causes in polite company. :P
Anyway I weighed in on a debate last night as I usually do when I talk about something here by explaining a huge chunk of meta for where I saw this thing coming from textually (see also: nerd), and threw in my opinion on the end, and now I have a bunch of replies where people sound like they're dying of horror to even dare disagree with me, despite me trying to cram in multiple disclaimers that I'd reached the opinion part of the discussion, that I knew people had different opinions, and this was literally the part of my discussion that was my own bias for why I want to see things go a certain way.
The textual analysis was not meant to scare anyone into thinking I can't be argued with, I just wanted to sound the whole thing out and explain in detail why this was even a thing back to the roots as far as I knew about them. As I said to the first reply that sounded like I was going to literally murder them for disagreeing, everything that anyone's disagreeing with here is the second part, my opinion on it all, which I have tried SO HARD to convey is the bit which is mine, my own, my precious. And you can't take it from me, you CAN agree with me, and I am not going to go around taking other people's preciouses when I'm already sitting in my dank cave with THIS one. All I can do to disagree is clarify to the best of my ability what I meant and where I think our opinions differ. I mean the replies on that post are now deeply upsetting to me because it sounds like people think that the louder, chattier people in this fandom have *any* special power to be agreed with other than "talked louder; inevitably someone either pays you money to shut up, or people start listening".
So okay apparently people listen to me and I have an intimidating opinion. Here's my intimidating opinion of the day: my opinion, nor anyone else's, is worth ANY more than yours, whoever you are reading this.
Meta is just a discussion of the show, and the meta I've generally written and reblogged has been textual analysis where opinion is mostly in the spec at the end, but most of the post is trying to say "what does this mean if the show put this in"... It also causes problems where people think the meta is authoritative, trying to dictate the show, whatever, by being phrased as saying what we think the show is saying usually without disclaimers about personal investment or degree of credulity we're lending it all... but there's a difference between trying to work out the message and writing down what we think it is (even when we don't like it, even when the message is something like telling us we take it too seriously :P) and having an opinion on it.
So I can think the show has put in some pretty heavy subtext that Dean and Crowley hooked up. I didn't particularly *like* it at the time, and that was my opinion, but I still reblogged bunches and bunches of meta about it (and eventually warmed up to the concept once we were out of several different danger zones that really put me off what the show's message seemed to be at first), because it was something I saw in the show and it was so obvious it was hard at times to talk about anything else. I know there are people out there who are still clinging on that it didn't happen at all and that is also an analysis and an opinion, and probably an easier one for them to deal with on the subject. There's people who grudgingly give the show that they had that subtext, let it have happened, but refuse to engage in it because they think it sucks and they don't like Crowley. That's also their right. There's people who love it to bits and immediately shipped it and it's really important to them. That's ALSO their right and still not exactly where I am with it although since I kinda got into the middle of all that by reblogging so much meta about it we seem to be on the best terms of all these different options :P There's myriad other opinions on it all, including probably that meta writers are being ridiculous for even daring to look for any kind of subtext in the first place. (A refusal to engage with the text is, ironically, also engaging with the text at least for discussion purposes, hence like, MOST fandom drama between people who just want to spread hate and think they have a definitive reading of it all >.>)
I read a lot of posts here from more than just the specific bits of opinion I agree with, and I see a lot of opinions flowing by in all different camps of the show that I think are fine that people have. And as people have got disillusioned with the show I used to agree with on every point I learned their opinion was still just their opinion and that it still didn't affect what I wanted to feel, and so I carried on mouthing off my opinion as people I once agreed with left or fell out of love with the things we used to have an equal love in. And all these opinions are based in things people read in the show and they can offer up their evidence for it, and if it's well argued, I'll read the whole thing, and even agree with every point they argue, and still walk out of there with my original opinion intact if I can be absolutely sure that I have my own footing for why I think what I think. And that's that. I read a 70k long meta about why Sam is a horrible person and I still love him and will defend him for these things, but the meta I read made some awfully good and intelligent points about the writing of the show that at the very least I will from now on take deep into my understanding of the writing in the bit it was talking about, while still not feeling like Sam as an emotional construct is something I now have to hate or that I can't find his side and feel empathetic towards it as well. (Also I am the sort of person who reads a 70k meta on why a fave is awful if it's well-argued, without raising my own blood pressure or changing my mind on the important parts, so I suppose there's that to know about me... :P)
Anyway. As usual a lot of words to say something simple. I'm not an authority. I'm glad people enjoy my meta and look to me to talk about the show in my own rambly way, but when I have an opinion on something you're allowed to disagree. I knew that debate was sensitive but I wanted to explain my own side properly because I thought that would be *more* sensitive than just saying my opinion, as if it were fact, and people are treating it like they're having to fight the system now and I am way too anarchic for that. Please don't turn me into a pillar of authority, I'm a dweeb in sheepie pyjamas. I should not be dictating people's opinion on a TV show, just offering textual arguments and my own opinions for people who are too lazy to type it out and agree with it themselves, and if they don't agree with me, to be able to make their own posts about their own opinions.
If the reason you want to disagree with me is the opinion part of my posts, then that's okay, you can do that. You can make your own posts, you can reply to my post although I'm not going to have a clue what to say. Your opinions are your opinions, and YOU CAN'T ARGUE WITH OPINIONS. I am NOT going to go reply to people who have a deep investment in an opinion who are disagreeing with MY OPINION and say "You can't have that opinion, your subjective emotional stake in a thing is WRONG".
I think we have a slight misunderstanding going around between meta and opinion. Meta is analysis. Opinion is how we feel about it. Me laying out a bunch of analysis is not disagreeing or throwing a pile of quotes around to try and prove I have some higher ground on my opinion (in fact in this case I thought there was a broad agreement on the textual reading and a vast gulf on the opinion, of which I was asked mine >.>), it's an attempt to explain and lay down the facts I think are at work to inform opinions, and the narratives I see that have already been put into the show on something. My opinion is what I think should happen with that with an emotional stake of what makes me feel good or bad about it. Nothing is going to change what I feel good or bad about here except for the show doing more with it.
I felt bad about Dean and Crowley after 10x04 because Dean said he was "embarrassed". I felt good about Dean and Crowley after 10x17 where they were philosophical and friendly. I felt horrified about Dean and Crowley after 11x02 when Crowley made the "choirboy" comment that seemed to go waaay over the bounds of implying the dub con I was worried about all along. I felt conflicted about Dean and Crowley after 11x06 where Dean turned out to have kept Crowley's messages on his phone. I started to feel better after 11x22 and 23 where they had the dynamic from 10x17 which put me at ease. In 12x15 I was actively nostalgic along with Crowley because they'd moved to such a good place and the narrative showing Crowley to the door wanted to make a final comment on how this relationship had been for them. My OPINION and what made me feel good or bad kept changing. My READING that the show's subtext was telling us pretty much directly that they'd hooked up, had not changed since 10x01 and the comment about how they'd "Had a room" that I think was even in a promo before the episode, never mind once we got the actual episode and we learned about the triplets :P This is the difference between meta and opinion to me. In the early part of season 11 I was actively upset about this dynamic because I thought it had gone too far. The writing made me feel better and now it's all over I'm genuinely fond of it as the way they managed to leave off, which is an impressive feat for a ship that once made me laugh in hysterical confusion, and at another point actively squicked me out.
Anyway current canon has left me at a point on the other thing where I see a pattern that has emotionally meant pretty much the same thing to me the entire time it's been unfolding on my screen and I've been watching along with fandom and reading all the meta explaining the stuff I see on screen. I feel like there's not a great deal of wiggle room on interpretation of some instances for the basic message the show is trying to convey about where it's going or why it's doing certain things, and it's usually just the weight you give them that your opinion can affect the reading. A lot of these things are fairly black and white meaning to me because the context was so heavily laden with that overflowing Carver era symbolism that I learned to read from meta writers past (and a few thankfully still present). I'm going to assume and act like it's a prevailing opinion because when I was fandom new it was a loud and often-repeated idea and everyone I saw talking about it seemed to be excited and excitement is infectious. The excitement was the feeling, the opinion, the bias rolling off of all this. The meta underneath was what was making them excited and debating it as a concept a thousand miles an hour. My opinion that it's a good thing probably comes from this season 9 era happy acceptance of the idea, and nothing's really happened to change my opinion or make me feel differently. So the meta I call on is mostly of the era I remember it being discussed the most in the text and therefore by the fandom, and the feeling I have about it hasn't much changed. If that makes me sound like I know what I'm talking about, it's because this is an extremely well-worn groove to me, always leading to the same conclusions and generally being soaked in positive feeling.
I'm sorry there are people who are upset by the concept but I'm not sorry for my opinion and feelings and I feel like this whole thing is a really weird mess where people are using my post to debate my opinion with their own opinions, and feelings will always be at cross purposes and I can't help that. I can't meta away feelings. I can't meta up new feelings. The only thing that will change my opinion is the show producing new context which makes me feel weird and uncertain about my previous opinion, which I am liable and happy to change. And we're at a really weird and upsetting for everyone cross purposes where opinions are being given the debatable value of meta and treated as if they're the main statement, the main idea, the main reason anything is happening. When a subject's debatable issue is entire in what everyone FEELS about it, everyone is always going to be upset, and someone who writes long wordy posts and then attaches an opinion at the end is going to seem, apparently, like they're some sort of undebatable pillar when in fact their opinion is meaningless to yours and they just like talking a lot about the show and explaining where their opinion even comes from in the first place.
The debatable part to me would be anywhere I mention something that happened in an episode and then explain my reading of what it meant in fairly straightforward terms of parallels and symbolism or contrasts and seeming statements on character feeling and intent. My opinion attached to the end is not something I am going to let go of, NOR do I expect YOU to let go of YOUR opinion to engage me on the subject.
And that goes for basically everything.
So I will not be replying to that post and its replies because they're all opinion based on what makes people feel good or bad, and I see it as completely futile because *ALL I CAN DO* in this case is hurt people by doubling down on my opinion of what makes me feel good and bad about that speculation.
So all I can say is that I am NOT an authority and opinions are NOT META (which is still just a reading that can be argued in different ways, but for the sake of opinion posts, the basis on where that opinion comes from and the ~authority~ you're using to feel that way, even if the authority you get that opinion from is your own interpretation), not mine, not yours. They're a discussion about how we feel about the show and carry little weight in analysis, so we need to stop arguing with each other on entirely theoretical speculative subjects where people have high emotions about it, without recognising what we are doing and how people will get hurt when posing the idea that opinions can ever be objective or a way to force people to agree with you. I'm sorry only that my disclaimers last night were not enough to make it clear I was worried about this exact thing happening, and that this lead to people expressing that I'm somehow a master opinion you can't argue with.
By all means collect up people who share an opinion and make friends and feel better about it. It's OKAY to disagree with people who you see as otherwise apparently making a lot of sense and being worth listening to. No one agrees on everything all the time and it's weird if you do. There's a couple of meta writers I agree with on just about everything except one particular topic where I was quite amused to see those two disagreeing on every point and then though I didn't reply I had my own, different and wildly conflicting, opinion, from the BOTH of them, on every single example they gave. So we'll just... not discuss those sort of things with each other I suppose :D And we get on and on every other point, it seems, continue to reblog from each other and agree loudly. And I hope people disagreeing with my opinion and each other's opinion on these things don't just cut off ties from each other despite agreeing on many other topics, because of this one thing.
TL;DR - I am not interested in starting an opinion or personality cult where I'm always right. I'm really really not interested in smacking down people's opinions who disagree with me. I'm completely chill with other people's opinions existing out there, and I really really hate that opinions upset people because they're taken as fact, and I think rather than saying opinions are inarguable, I kinda think we should just be allowed to HAVE them and go about our business. And I'm hereby releasing my opinions on everything people disagree with into the void to say they are utterly meaningless if you disagree with them, and hold absolutely no weight on what you're allowed to think or publicly express.
(PS: pls talk more all the time about the ideas you have and don't feel like there's some sort of meta authority. I am so socially anxious I used to sweat and shake and triple-read my replies to people I thought were meta authorities until I realised I was always going to admire them, but we were all basically doing the same thing, shooting the breeze about the show, and no one was more important or authoritative than the others. If there's some sort of wall between communicating because there's a perceived meta ivory tower, please know that everyone you think is at the top of the tower is someone who still sees themselves as standing in the ground floor lobby of said tower, confused about how they were even let in the door, and seeing someone else above them on the higher floors.)
#long post for ts#not wank but I'll tag in case people just hate long rants in general#wank for ts#fandom problems#I'ma airplane this to a couple of people as a personal apology now >.>
