The Crystal Exarch was sure he had it right that time. All of the markers, the aetheric energies, screamed the Warrior of Light's name in capital letters. And yet the figure that walked towards him under the blue boughs of Lakeland was one he'd never seen before. Wearing a very natty Doman suit, of all things. "Yeah, I got some limited training as a samurai in Ul'dah when I was a kid. I took to the fashion more than the fighting style. This is my jacket...but I don't understand...I was wearing my Wailers uniform when I...oh..." Thom was immediately sick. Even after 125 years of experience, it was obvious that G'raha was out of his depth. Time for reinforcements.

_____ Feo Ul clucked and sighed. "Oh, now this will never do. 'Tis but a rag!" Indeed, the uniform was so badly singed, it couldn't have been bigger than a tea towel. G'raha suddenly felt his stomach flip at the implications. There's no way that Thom actually survived the Battle of Carteneau. Is it possible that he summoned a soul from The Lifeforce itself? G'raha cleared his throat. "Feo Ul, I know pixies have skills beyond compare. Could you try..." "But of course. I like this one you've brought for me! He'll have his precious cloth. If I can't do it, I'll have Jasfort look at it." With several loops around him and a wink that Thom wasn't sure he appreciated, Feo Ul disappeared with the remnants of his uniform. ----- "So...I have to find a little Elezen girl...in a vast desert...that I don't know from Althyk's off ox." The Crystal Exarch had given him a rough description of the plight currently roiling the reflections of the star. None of it did anything to lift the fog of pain, confusion and aether-soaking that his brain had endured in the last two weeks. That's right, it's only been two weeks since Cartenau. Two weeks since he last saw Pryne alive. And now he was tasked with assembling a team of her apparent close friends, few of whom she actually knew when he saw her last.

He had seen glints of the light corruption at the top of his vision, but his eyes weren't all that reliable, despite The Exarch's generous gift of new glasses. Now, as he crested the sand embankment and tumbled towards The Derrick... A full wave of light corruption filled his vision, threatening to swallow him whole. Thom felt fear well up and overtake his muscles, which began to twitch involuntarily. Despite the frigid temperatures, he took refuge in The Derrick's overhang, as if sheltering from an unforgiving sun. It took a good three minutes for him to regulate his breathing; observing the minutiae of the well's mechanisms to center his focus, trying to pull on that "useless" samurai training. This is what The Exarch was trying to abduct his living, breathing wife to combat? How could she possibly? How could anyone? "Oh, my darling. This is so much bigger than any of us."

I started playing dragon age when I was 14, started with inquisition while I was at boarding school. Solavellan was my first playthrough, and really my first ever experience of any kind of romance. My Canon Inquisitor, Naomi Lavellan, was my first run, and I almost romanced Blackwall, but after I got to skyhold I spoke to Solas first, and the fade kiss got to me.

Anyway, at the time there were two solavellan edits that were really popular on YouTube, both with heavily modded footage, using these two songs, and I fell completely in love with them after I finished trespasser, and I would watch them and sob and watch them again, and to this day I can't listen to them without thinking of Naomi and the egg man.

With DATV cast having a detective and an actual Warden I know some of you are clowning on Thom Rainier. Lest ye forget he was the only one standing during dragon fights, protecting all of you from reloading. Still with a full bar of HP when the other warriors had already been knocked out. Being kind to Sera when almost all the other characters disrespected her. The absolute gall.

Hello, lovely Anon! This is such an interesting question, thank you.

The title of this fic eluded me for so long. It never had one, in all the years I was writing, and even up until just before I was ready to post, I still hadn't hit on the right one. I usually just *know* when I find the right title, and it wasn't coming to me.

Some early notes I made are: Fierce as Electricity/ A Waste of Breath/ Sunward/ High Flight/ Golden Hour/ Upon Your Wrist/ Not Keeping Still (On the Move) (i was reading A LOT of thom gunn haha).

One idea we came up with in the group chat, which I still really love, was to describe the timespan of the fic in the title. So it's around eleven months in total, so it would have been something like 331 Days of Arrowless Time (because there's a theory that in the multiverse time is arrowless ie it doesn't move in one particular direction, linearly). I still think that is an excellent title but I have such a bad memory for titles and I knew I'd get it muddled along the way somewhere.

Anyway then i started reading a lot of war poetry, and was coming up with some i liked but again weren't right (What is Sunk/ Faces to the Foe/ Small Ways/ An Inward Sword). And then @sweet-s0rr0w started sending me links to poems she thought fit the vibe and one of the first was The Light of Stars by Longfellow, which I actually knew but hadn't considered as it was written before the period I was leaning into.

Within my breast there is no light

But the cold light of stars;

I give the first watch of the night

To the red planet Mars. 

It felt very good vibes-wise: to me, it's about resolution and strength through adversity. I also loved how he describes the qualities of warriors as "Serene, and resolute, and still/ And calm, and self-possessed" (Mars being the god of war in Ancient Roman mythology, thus uniting another special interest of mine) - it's the opposite of how I imagined my Harry lmao. Such bangers as "Know how sublime a thing it is/ To suffer and be strong" sealed the deal. In this fic, the characters are fighting a literal war, but they're also fighting against themselves, to be who they want to be, and both Harry and Draco tend to be hard on themselves, and deny themselves what they want in favour of what they think they deserve. Suffering and being strong is their default setting - in this fic, I look at how they can move beyond that. And despite the Longfellow poem asking "Is it the tender star of love? The star of love and dreams? O no!" - my fic is obviously about love, and the realisation of desires, and I liked the undercutting of the theme.

The first watch is also a military term - being on watch means you're on a specific duty for a set time. First watch I believe runs in the evening up to midnight? So it's quite symbolic, being on the alert into the dark of night, and doing your duty and so on. It felt apt for a fic about a war. And of course, this is a fic about time... so the word watch can have a double meaning 😆

All in all, the title is one I'm really happy with now I've decided to go with it - it's easy for me to remember and captures the mood I wanted.

108 hours.

Finally beat Veilguard after 108 hours with everything maxed out. You can imagine how it ended.

The game got me good. I was surprised multiple times by the plot twists and by the choices I actually made. I had planned to start with the Mourn Watch, but I heard the calling of the Grey Wardens once again so back into the fray (grey?) I went. As a long-time dwarven player, the faction was incredibly satisfying: plenty of reactivity as a Grey Warden and way more reactivity than I expected for the dwarven lineage.

Davrin was also another surprise considering that he wasn't even on my radar. There wasn't that much information out there on his character compared to a few others. Besides I had "been there, done that" with romancing Grey Wardens with none of them being successful. (Alistair left. Blackwall became Thom Rainer so it technically didn't count. =p) I thought Davrin would just be the generic warrior of the group. There wasn't anything mysterious left about the Grey Wardens, right? Right?

Yeah. I was wrong again. I knew I was in trouble when I started laughing at his dry comments during his recruitment quest. We just vibed for the rest of the game. I enjoyed his character growth and I appreciated his kindness towards Harding. Those two were my ride-or-die to the very end.

Needless to say, I went into Act 3 completely blind. I thought I was prepared. I was not. It was just one emotional gut punch after another. Yeah. Outstanding cinematics though! You could really feel the scale of the battle and how high the stakes were. Truly top notch.

DATV started out as a bit of a slog, but went out with a bang. My Aeducan declined the Dark Ritual all the way back in Origins and I always wondered what that meant long-term for the dwarves. Was it the right choice? Was my logic sound? Veilguard provided enough answers with the retroactive closure that I needed and the hopeful future that I wanted.

For the Grey Wardens!

DAI: What is going through the minds of the Inquisition and the advisors, especially the romanced ones, upon realizing that they are going to lose the Inquisitor to the anchor?

Cassandra: Even the greatest fairy tales have an ending, but somehow Cassandra had always hoped that theirs would be happy. Their love was so unexpected, so sudden, and yet she had known from their first kiss that in him she had found a love for the ages.

Her uncle told her she was unlovable, her oath made her unlikable, but beneath it all her herald had seen the woman within the warrior--and still called her his own. He did not forsake her, even when she was unsure of herself with him. If these are to be their last hours together, she will not forsake him.

And she wishes now he had proposed.

Solas: He is not even sure he has the right to grieve, and yet he mourns every minute she is in pain and far from his side. This was always coming, of course-- he knew it from the first moment. And yet that cannot offset the suffering his Vhenan is undergoing.

It is another regret on his shoulders, but he must perservere.

Blackwall: Warden or wanderer, Blackwall or simply her Thom, the news brings him to his knees. How can a woman who has saved so many others be beyond salvation now? For all the power their inquisition has garnered, how can it fall short of saving their leader? How is that any kind of justice? Where is the Maker, when Andraste's herald needs him most?

There are no answers, of course, and in truth he does not wish to waste the time looking for them. As the mark sputters and sparks and threaten to consume her he rarely leaves her side. Through the eluvians or simply through politics he is her strong arm when pain makes her weak, a bulwark against a pain no man can truly fight.

And if he only leaves her side once while she fights for uneasy sleep, to seek out the dark alley shop with its nervous proprietor, no one else need know. The bottle of Quiet Death sits in secret in the bottom of his traveling pack, the most honest choice he has ever made. There is no world, for him, when she is gone. Let them accost the Maker together.

Sera: She knows.

She knows before anyone, knows when her honey tongue's hand starts burning like a green candle and she stops sleeping as well. When you grow up little, grow up afraid, you learn to expect the worst so that the worst doesn't surprise you. And so Skyhold's Red Jenny is braced for the blow for a long time, but it still hurts. Shite, it hurts to know it for real, to see it for real.

She never loved anyone, not like the Inquisitor. No one ever believed in her like the Herald, nowhere felt like home like the Inquisition. She can't do without it, without her, and part of Sera wants to leave before it hurts more. But even thinking about not being there hurts too, hurts like someone is stomping on her heart.

And so she stays. Stays to make her love laugh, stays to make the bad days better. Stays and impulsively drags her honey tongue off to get married, to promise to love each other for ever even if thats not very long anymore. But Sera isn't going to run, and if this is how it ends...she wants the world to know who her herald belonged to, and for her herald to know how much she was loved.

Dorian: It was supposed to be him. Maker's breathe, it was supposed to be him! It was supposed to be him that went first, a martyr to a better Tevinter, a beautiful profile cast forever in marble for his amatus to weep beautifully over and curse Dorian for ever leaving him behind. Even before his father's murder he expected such an eventual fate, and in truth had stayed so long in Skyhold so as to make those memories before Tevinter took her blood price for trying to change her.

But it was not supposed to be the Inquisitor fighting a losing battle with his own sodding arm, not Dorian left to only wring his hands and hold the man he loved close while he suffered. He is the product of a thousand years of careful breeding, graduate of the finest academies in Tevinter, a Maker's damned magister, but it's not enough. The anchor is taking its price, almost right before his eyes, and there is nothing he can do.

He'd always known the inquisitor would break his heart. But...kaffas, it was meant to be him.

Wallavellan brainrot has consumed me once more while thinking about Dragon Age.

Because if you really think about it, Blackwall and Lavellan really do have inverted but mirroring stories.

He so utterly despised who he became that he took the persona of a better man, moulded himself to be like who he thought the real Blackwall was. Grafted the best parts of Thom Rainier on to this construction of Warden Blackwall and chose a new identity.

Contrast to Lavellan, who was just living her life with her clan, either as a scout, tracker, and hunter (rogue/warrior) or as the clan's First and thus future Keeper (mage). She's got an entire life and it's the world she's always known and as soon as the Conclave goes BOOM, that is over with. Now she's the Herald of Andraste, an idea that can easily be abhorrent to her. She's The Inquisitor. She's every other title in the game, but she's not Lavellan anymore, not really.

So Blackwall x Lavellan builds to a climax of "Who are we?" If you grant him his life as Rainier back, you're still you. Beneath the trappings of office and politics, it's still the elf who likely cared not for shem politics. And you can either reunite with your love, or let him go free while acknowleding the lie was a bridge too far. But either way, you're you. If you're cunning enough to remand him to the Wardens' custody, however, Lavellan starts to slip away in favor of The Inquisitor. Remanding someone into the Wardens' custody is a political move. An order from a leader. His lie sits on your heart enough to want retribution, oh so fitting. It might BE fitting, it might be suitable, but it's also not Dalish. It's an acknowledgement that part of the old you has slipped away for good (and the part of you that loved him will be silenced when he has to go).

And if you force him to pretend to be Blackwall? You're forcing him to fully take on his own faked identity while you yourself have completely and willingly subsumed yourself into this new you that you didn't even want at first. The power and authority to make a man be another man. To taunt him for his crimes. To in effect enslave Blackwall/Rainier into your control. (Maybe the old ways of the Evanuris persist still, that moment you get that first taste of true power).

For my Lavellan, Thom turning himself in solidified that even through the deception, that was absolutely the man she fell in love with. And if the nobles hated how she used the Inquisition's leverage to free him? They can all sod off, they all hated her anyway because she's an elf. She's an elf who loves Thom Rainier.

Spoiled, entitled, and destined for greatness, Princess Rhein Aeducan was the only child of King Endrin and his beloved wife Griet. A proud warrior and staunchly conservative voice when it suited her, Rhein was posed to become the honorary Commander of the King’s forces when she lost her position, her title, and her place in the histories. Refusing to give up on her vengeance and her restoration to the shaperate, she did everything in her power to manoeuvre herself back into influence in Orzammar, finally holding the posts of Paragon, guardian of the heir Endrin, advisor to King Harrowmont, Warden-Commander of Fereldan and Arlessa of Amaranthine.

A contradiction of traditionalism and self-serving ambition, Rhein was wed to the warden Alistair, who denounced his claim to the throne of Fereldan to be his wife’s proxy in the wardens, often doing her bidding whilst she was in Orzammar with her second Gorim Saelac. On his death she finally returned to Weisshaupt to lay his memorial stone, before embarking on a new mission with Paragon Davri, Warden Carver Hawke, and new Warden-Recruit Thom Rainier.

Fathoming a Marauders RENT!AU

This is what happens when you’ve been doing nothing but reading Marauders fics for the last two months and then you stop to watch a movie musical.

First stating off…

Peter as Mark! I just love the idea of Peter as the story teller. Always on the outside just a bit, even though everyone loves mark he just never quite feels it and it makes him a bit bitter. Like this lyric from Halloween is just sooo young Peter coded.

Other half of the dynamic duo is definitely James as Rodger! Like James fresh out of rehab and trying to write a song because obsessed with legacy!! So repressed but so full of love and sorrow that’s my James Potter!!! Plus ex-rocker James is very sexy to me!

Collins is Remus John Lupin!!! First and foremost “kiss me, it’s beginning to snow” is THE most wolfstar lyric!!! also also professor RJ Lupin in every universe. Remus as the intellectual who's trying his hand at some anarchist performance art that's basically just criminal activity. Love him!! Like these characters are so similar I’m not sure if Remus is a Collins variant or if Collins is a Remus variant… honestly we’ll never know.

If Collins is Remus then of course Sirius is Angel!! This is just obvious to me like Sirius in drag killing dogs for money and serving absolute cunt, breaking into an apartment then dying tragically?!? Like who else would he be lol

Jokes aside Collins/Angel is THE heart of the show and nothing in the musical works if they aren’t there, just like Wolfstar. I’ll Cover You is a wolfstar songs I mean just look at these lyrics! They are so soft I love them.

Regulus as Mimi! Obviously I had to make Jegulus a great big tragedy!! Like strung out stripper Regulus is just too good of an opportunity to pass up... plus I feel like “I’m 19 but I’m old for my age” is SUCH a Reggie lyric. Plus Reggie’s dynamic with a certain Benny was just so so good but we will get there later. Also also if anyone’s going to OD on CHRISTMAS and die then come back to life super dramatically after their soulmate sings to them it’s going to be Regulus Arcturus Black!!! Like he is the drama queen!!

Lily as Maureen… This is what started this whole thought spiral y'all. I was thinking about the Mark/Maureen/Joanne dynamic and I could only think of my favorite disaster bisexual in the middle of it. But beyond that this works on so many levels. The Remus/Lily friendship mirroring the Maureen/Collins dynamic and Maureen actually using her art to make statements against those in power which is so Lily of her!!! Like Lily as a crazy feminist killjoy and slutty social justice warrior is just so important to me!!!

Oh Joanne you are so so so important to me! (my favorite RENT character) Daughter of a politician and ivy league graduate who is working and living with artists and trying to keep them all in line?? Joanne could only be queen Mary McDonald!! Also I have always thought of Tracie Thoms as a fancast for older Mary so this just all works in my mind. I've always head cannoned Mary as a type-A over achiever who needs her friends to push her out of her comfort zone. Take me or Leave Me is such a Lily/Mary song. Also Mary/Lily having a constant on again/off again is most pleasing to me.

Barty Crouch... Junior as Benjamin Coffin... the third! This was the hardest person to decide in my mind but as soon as I thought Barty it all clicked into place. The Benny/Mimi Dynamic for starkiller just works so well. Plus if there's one thing Barty knows how to be is a villain!! Also I've always thought that Lily would HATE Barty so that works because if there's one thing that Maureen's going to do its beef with Benny (including at her own friends funeral).

Honorable Mention to the Black brothers getting to play out the Angel/Mimi dynamic (especially the ending scene when Regulus sees Sirius and he tells him to back and listen to Jame's song), Peter selling out in the second act because he's left without his support system, Collins and Angel only getting 10 months together (which is basically what wolfstar had between POA & OOTP), James and Peter in the context of What You Own (ouch I hurt my own feelings with that one), Remus and Barty getting drunk after the funeral, Marlene as the girl that Maureen kisses during La Vie Bohem (I have no reason for this other than the girl in the pro-shot really looks like Marlene to me), James playing an acoustic guitar at a dying man in order to save his life and it actually working! (I love this show but the image of Rodger wonderwall-ing a woman who needs medical attention is SO fucking funny to me),

First off--booooo to people being rude in your asks! I'm sorry you had to deal with that. It's always a bummer whenever someone brings bad energy into fandom spaces.

Second, as an actual ask...since I'm FINALLY trying to catch up on Love Is Forever. You use a lot of Radiohead lyrics as epigraphs and inspo for Link's band. Do you picture him having a Thom Yorke sound? What other bands do you image him/them sounding like? (Also I just realized while writing this out that I totally picture Link as Kurt Cobain if he'd been more punk and less into drugs.)

The actual inspiration for Hyrule Warriors is the band Muse. I was going to use Radiohead (because they are my favorite alt rock band) for the prequel, I Belong to You (the complete fic is available on AO3!), but not a lot of their songs worked.

I listened to other alternative rock bands and discovered Muse. Before I wrote I Belong to You, I was only familiar with Knights of Cydonia by Muse because there’s a cover on Guitar Hero 🤣😅 Now, I’m addicted to them. So many of their songs are zelink coded I was able to use only their work for the prequel titles. Their lead singer, Matt Bellamy is who I picture as far as voice type - tenor.

Another reason I decided to use Muse is because in I Belong, Link is the bass guitarist (not the lead guitarist/singer) and Muse has some sick bass guitar riffs. Namely the very first song Zelda ever hears them play:

Hysteria click the song title to hear - if you like metal guitar, you'll like this song and the bass line is absolute 🔥

But, there are two Muse songs that sold me:

Falling Away With You - I immediately thought of TotK when I heard the lyrics: (it's a gorgeous song)

And I’ll feel my world crumbling

I’ll feel my life crumbling

I’ll feel my soul crumbling

And falling away with you.

The other is Exogenesis Symphony Movement Three: Redemption

Link and Gan are best friends, formed Hyrule Warriors, and are composition/piano performance majors.

This excerpt from I Belong to You is the scene Zelda realizes she’s falling in love with Link: (it's my favorite scene/chapter in the entire series)

Zelda looked at the sheets covered in penciled-in music notes and Link’s messy scrawl that began halfway across the score. “I can’t read music very well.”

“That’s okay. I can’t read scientific equations for shit. I just wanted you to sit by me.” He gave her a one-dimpled crooked smile. Oh goddesses, the tightness in Zelda’s chest grew. Maybe asking him to play for her had been a mistake, but it was too late to change her mind. His fingers had already settled on the keys and were beginning to play a simple repeating rolling chord with his left hand.

“This is the third movement. Gan titled it Redemption.” After a few more measures, he began playing with his right hand, simple at first, building to a more complex melody. “Here’s where the string section would come in, with a counter melody. Gan can play a little violin, but we have some friends who will play for us once we complete composing the orchestration.”

The melody grew, and the theme changed. Then he took an audible breath and, to Zelda’s delight, began to sing:

“Let’s start over again

Why can’t we start it over again?

Just let us start it over again

And we’ll be good

This time we’ll get it, hmmm get it right

It’s our last chance

To forgive ourselves.”

Zelda’s throat constricted, and the exhilarating feeling (that she absolutely refused to name because she would be forever lost if she did) blossomed within her, threatening to overwhelm and consume her.

If you haven't read I Belong to You and are enjoying Love is Forever (another Muse song, btw 😉) I highly recommend my own work 😂😅 They are both rated E for adult content (I mean rock star 😂), but it's more plot than the sexy fun times (imo)
