Lee Miller photographed innumerable women during her career, first as a fashion photographer and then as a journalist during the Second World War, documenting the social consequences of the conflict, particularly the impact of the war on women across Europe. Her work as a war photographer is perhaps that for which she is best remembered; in fact, she was among the 20th century's most important photographers on the subject. Published to coincide with an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, Lee Miller: A Womans War tells the story beyond the battlefields of the Second World War by way of Miller's extraordinary photographs of the women whose lives were affected. Introductions by Hilary Roberts and Antony Penrose, Lee Miller's son, precede Miller's work, which is divided into chronological chapters. Miller's photographs, many previously unpublished, are accompanied by extended captions that place the images within the context of women's roles within the landscape of war.

"THE PHOTOGRAPHER AT WORK IN WAR," North Bay Nugget. April 2, 1943. Page 9. --- In this rapidly paced global war the task of taking still and action camera pictures becomes a job which depends solely on speed and team work wherever and how tough the fighting might be. Unlike World War 1, today's cameramen are up on the front line with the fighting men. Their job is to give the public an up-to-date view of scenes both behind the lines and in the thick of the toughest kind of warfare. Here it is shown how pictures are raced to headquarters for developing, printing and distribution. Upper left, a Canadian still photographer is shown in action with his camera. Upper right Despatch Rider W. A. Hall of Calgary, Alberta, delivers the negatives during a night run. Lower left, another rider. Pte. D. R. George DeRiviers of Montreal, delivers prints to the Press Relations Office. Accepting the prints is Pte. C. M. Paget of Toronto. A Canadian Army film cameraman, Lieut. G. Noble, is seen in the lower right picture filming Canadians during recent manoeuvres with Lieut. John McDougall of Montreal directing operations.

Hi, I'm Safaa, a mother of two girls. I'm living through the horrors of war here as you read my message. I'm fighting death and running with my two children, wateen and Naya, from one place to another to save their lives. I'm escaping a real genocide and the spread of diseases and epidemics.
My husband is a journalist who was seriously injured in the head and almost killed while covering the events. I sincerely hope you can empathize with our dire situation and consider supporting us.
Your generosity has the potential to make a huge difference.

Lee Miller : A new film about Vogue model & war correspondent Lee Miller will star Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard
Lee Miller after a photography by Man Ray Long-awaited Lee Miller biopic starring Kate Winslet adds Jude Law to cast. It’s unclear who (if anyone) will play Man Ray in an upcoming feature film about photographer Lee Miller, starring Kate Winslet as the model-turned-Surrealist-turned-World War II correspondent. In a way, that’s the point. The multitalented Miller is often pigeonholed as Man…

The Morning after...
Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine hasn't vanished. Once again we spent last night in the corridor, away from the windows and the shattering glass. The historic centre of Odesa, where I live, is covered with scars that are getting bigger and bigger. The Odesa National Fine Arts Museum, a cosy art gallery, which turns 124 years old today, was attacked by russian missiles and shaheds. There is pain and wrath instead of celebration. And the best antidepressant for me - a walk in the park on a sunny November day.
