APPLE PIE FRENCH TOAST FOR 215 KCALS
(moaning)
1 medium apple, cooked in water+lemon juice and cinnamon
3 slices Healthy Life Whole Wheat bread
2 egg whites + splash Cashew milk, Chai Skinny Syrup (for sweet flavor), Cinnamon, and Vanilla extract*
this mixture all together I calculated out to be around 45 calories, but I only ended up using about half of it*
——————————————————
I double toasted all three slices of bread and then dipped them into the mixture before dropping them into a pan heated to medium for about 4-6 minutes on each side. I had thrown the diced apple in a separate pan while I was doing all of this so it would be all soft and cinnamon-ized by the time I was done.
After the toast had finished cooking on the pan, I arranged it on the plate and just dumped the cooked apple bits on top. I sprinkled more cinnamon on and then drizzled it with Walden Farms zero-cal pancake syrup.
I’ve already eaten a chunk of the first piece and LET me tell you, it’s so good. It satisfies my sweet tooth AND it’s filling.
You could also use apple pie spice where I used cinnamon for a more distinct flavor!! I just don’t have any on hand and cinnamon always hits the spot for me anyway (‘:

Extra info Prior to flying, we've created Wise NZ Bank Account to apply and succesfully gotten our IRD numbers. We also applied for ANZ Bank GO Account online and MyIR account.
In NZ We verified and opened our ANZ Bank GO Account successfully at the physical bank which you have to have an appointment booked prior. We added an additional account at the counter which is the "Serious Saver" account. It has a higher interest rate if you don't use/withdraw the money. We also verified MyIR via an automated phone call.
Money
Converted cash on https://fx.changirecommends.com and collected at the airport , 1528.62SGD to 1750NZD, rates 1SGD - 1.144820NZD
Ben changed his money with a Singaporean guy residing in Auckland using the Google rates which were still shit but better than anywhere else. I think it was 1.15nzd to 1sgd.
We also converted SGD to NZD using the WISE app and one shot transferred to our ANZ bank account. Note that there is a one-time transfer fee at a fixed rate.
You can use Youtrip because it has the best rate out of all but the only downside is that you can’t withdraw it from your Youtrip account. Health Insurance I got my health Insurance at 851.76 NZD from http://www.healthandtravel.co.nz/ which you should consider if Orbit rejects your application.
Ben got his insurance from Orbit - Working Holiday Visa Insurance at 393.3 NZD.

Oatmeal + Splenda Monk Fruit Liquid + Walden Farms French Vanilla Coffee Creamer
A few sprays of Splenda and only a little of Walden farms. I didn’t really measure but probably no more than a teaspoons of Walden farms.
It taste alright like some healthy version of oatmeal. I’m use to eating oatmeal with brown sugar, butter and milk so that could be why it taste like it’s missing something.
100cals (bc the oatmeal packet)
Rating: 5/10

brought home the turkey dinner from work last night so i can weigh each part out and eat it in bite. there’s a white sauce that i think is hollandaise? and i don’t know the calories in it but i’m sure someone on lose it has tracked it before.
had a big piece of pizza so i’m not planning on having anything until about 6 tonight. the pizza was 450 calories, and the omelet i’lo have for dinner was 153 last time i made it. figured out the secret to not making the walden farms creamer taste awful, tho. i normally add 3 packets of splenda for a 700ml coffee if i’m using milk but it was too sweet with it. i used just salted caramel skinny syrup and some french vanilla creamer and it tastes more like an alright at home iced coffee

Some representatives of various Unions heard tell about the argument between the Carpenter’s District Counsel and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and sent some of their people to see why the Carpenter was forced to wait, but didn’t, and did work out of the realm of his job description, and why the Electrician left the job-site where the light-bulb was burned out, and want to know where he went, and why he didn‘t just wait for the Carpenter to build the scaffolding necessary to change the bulb. So, there is Autoworker’s Union Representative, Chrys McDryver, who seems positively exhausted, a big wig from the Electricians Union District Counsel, Leonard Static who reports say is “all coffee’d up”, United Farm Workers sent someone, a transgender by the name of Lilly Spade, and a spoke’s person from an arbitration firm in Kansas, Dorothy, last name unknown. They brought Caesar Chavez to help deal with those assholes at Communication Union, and as representation for the Internal Decorator’s Union who are busy at Time’s Square, arranging draperies, and a ball. They all feel the Communication Union is a lot of dead weight, waiting to happen, are meddling, and came to say so... Laborer’s Union could not attend the meeting, had to work, so, they sent a broom, as symbolic gesture. The argument had escalated by then, all the way to US Department of Labor, in DC.
The meeting took a turn when Ceasar took matters into his own hands, and drew the curtain, on behalf of Internal Decorators Union.
The outcome of the meeting is sketchy at best, as the Communication Union Representation seems to be suffering from an economy of words, has not been seen or heard from as of this writing, so, there is no report from the proper Union coming out of the Department of Labor in DC.
Stay tuned, but make sure you use someone from the American Musician’s Association for that in case you are called upon to speak as a witness, because it’s the Carpenter’s Union who’s job description is to build Stages and Pine Boxes, arbitration could result from improper, or substandard tuning, or non-OSHA approved soap boxes to stand on.
3:54 pm:
This Just In:
Reports from sources at the event explain that the Iron Workers Union was contacted and were asked to send a representative to join the others at the meeting in DC at DoL, however, the report says that the Iron Workers Union has been completely dissolved, and there are no more Iron Workers.
Stay Tuned.
=====
4:46 pm:
Unfamiliar sources at the meeting are reporting some strange details about the whereabouts of the Iron Worker’s Union Members. So far, it seems as though the Iron Worker’s contracted their communications to a PR firm at the recommendation the Communications Union some years ago, and the report states that a mix-up occurred somehow, a number of years ago, or, some unexplained activity took place when the Iron Workers were under the impression that they were dealing with a PR firm called “The Press”, but somehow, lines were crossed, they had been in contact with a Chinese Laundry with the same name for a number of years, the report states. That Chinese Laundry called “The Press” is said to have forwarded all of those misdirected messages to “The Press” PR firm who were recommended by the Communications Union, who sent representatives back to the Chinese Laundry to see why Chinese Engrish was being sent to them when they were contacted by “The Press” PR firm that they recommended to the Iron Worker’s Union and notified that way about the mix-up.
The only solid information, it turns out, is that the Chinese Laundry in question has new management now, and a name change occurred there to “One Hour Martinizing” at some point in the distant past.. There doesn‘t seem to be any former employees available from the Chinese Laundry to speak with, and the One Hour Martinizing was closed for the holiday when the unknown source went there to follow up on the lead about the Iron Workers Union all being gone or unaccounted for, or otherwise have not been responding for extended amount of time, the report states.
My impression of the Iron Workers and the reports about crossed lines of communication, is, that there is something fishy going on at the former Chinese Laundry turned “One Hour Martinizing”. The group who went to DoL in DC, it seems, were well founded when they said that the Communications Union is a lot of “dead weight, waiting to happen”.
Please Wait for further updates as this story is developing and is hot off the press.
=====
5:20 pm:
Further incoming news from possibly unreliable sources close to the matter in DC is shedding light in the form of news derived of a leak from Department of Transportation Secretaries Office Elaine Chao saying that someone from the Chinese Laundry, described as a woman with a prosthetic foot by the name of Eyelene, who was seen outside of the Statue of Liberty holding a photo of Ron Wyden and Greg Walden while shouting “There must be some kind of holdup!” and pointing at the Statue of Liberty.
Further details are not available.
Correction: The woman from the former Chinese Laundry’s name is “Eyereen“.
=====
5:31 pm:
This Just In: A local sky writer has sent anonymous note saying there is some kind of secret message associated with the word “Oz” with a possible connection to Josephine County Circuit Courts whereby the letters “O” and “Z” are numerically transcribed as the 15th and 26th letters of the English Alphabet. The connection, according to the skywriting pilot, is that one of the Zip Code’s for Josephine County is 97526, which seems to have very little connection to the word Oz to me, but I am not a pilot, so, I included that for your consideration.
I see more alpha-numeric value in the notion that MS13 can be numerically transcribed to: “13 S 13″ and “13 19 13″ and “13 10 13″, but that is better left for members of the Rocket Science Union to equate further, and has nothing at all to do with Department of Labor in DC as far as I can see as of this writing.
=====
6:22 pm:
Incoming local response to this developing story suggests that the Bible Passage “Isaiah 41:10″ is used in connection to “MS13″ when that is transcribed to “13 10 13″ and then to “4 10 4″, but partly in Quebec French, according to the French Canadian clerk at 6th Street Market in Grants Pass. She says the “four” is spoken like a “hock”, but with a “Clear your throat” roughness quality to the speech for saying “four” in French. I am told the “4 10 4″ transcription can be changed to “41 0 Hock”, and, the zero can be a “10″ because it follows “9″. So, that makes “41 10 Hock”. There is more, so I am told, the “Hock” is to be said to be “Quarters”. That all translates to: “I need a place to stay” when “Isaiah 41:10″ and “MS13″ are combined in a conversation between two terror soldiers covertly as “41:10 Hock” or “41:10 (Clear Your Throat)”.
The Bible Passage from Google Search:
“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
All of that is also used by terror leadership at the White House and the Various US Departments, such as DoL, and news media networks, with news stories about “MS13″, which is not a gang, is a way to say: “Isaiah 41:10″, and that allows a terror system that is frightening to regular citizens, while is secretly a communication of good will between terror soldiers in the field, who may be in some distress of some kind, and their US Government official leadership command chain. The communication down stream of leadership becomes: “I need a place to stay” or in conversely: “I have a place for you to stay”, or in a single word spoken either way: “Quarters”. Third Amendment US Constitution is the same communication as is “MS13″ and “Isaiah 41:10″ when spoken between terror soldiers.
There are no further reports of light bulbs, or Unions.
=====
8:34 pm:
Reports are rolling in at a rapid pace, none of which are from reliable sources however.
So far, taken with some salt for flavor, it seems the DC DoL Curtain call has drawn representation from NRA, and the Chinese Fireworks & Fire Drill Manufacturers Consortium has also joined the other ranks in DC at the Union Light Bulb Convention. There are reports saying that the event is being considered as a annual housecleaning event, but just as an early suggestion from the Fire-Drill representatives, all of the others, they say, are still arguing. The Iron Workers, I am told, have been flooded with a towering amount of calls to the various Local Union Halls, but no reports of getting through are mentioned, due to an absence of Communication Union representatives available to make comment, or to connect the phone lines with PBX Operator’s. Plumber’s Union was sent to DoT, to repair a leak. “Tomorrow is Friday”, they say, “payday”, so they are not willing to get involved with the discussion at DoL down the hall until Monday.
Personally, an uncanny phenomena associated with this ongoing lead, is that the more I open the door to the office, the more reports I receive, and in rapid succession when I step outdoors for a break. They’re quantity over quality I’m afraid, not many are “News Flash” worthy.
On a lighter note, The Count Counts the Countdown to the end of the year, as he always does, even if it is a re-run.
=====
9:01 pm:
Sources say the Plumber’s Union at DoT found what appears to be a submerged heap of Lincoln Brand Welder’s at the DoT plumbing leak; are too oxidized to know more about where they may have come from, why they are there, or how many Lincoln Brand Welder’s there are. No reports of association to the missing Iron Worker’s is noted in the report.
=====
9:08 pm:
Caesar Chavez who was representing the Interior Decorators Union was seen leaving the Capitol Building rapped in some draperies from a side door, as the news from the Plumber’s came in about the Lincoln Welder’s. Still no word from Communications Union members since the event began.
=====
9:20 pm:
This is big. It seems Donald Trump has put together a team to look into the Lincoln Brand Welder’s reported by the Plumber’s Union at the DoT plumbing leak. So far, all that is known is Department of Fish & Game headed by former Bureau of Land Management Secretary Ryan Zinke is to be sent to find the Lincoln’s. National Sheriff’s Association is said to have offered jet boats to the leaky area were the Plumbers are working to repair the DoT leak. They will deploy ASAP, says the source.
=====
9:31 pm:
National Sheriff’s Association has delivered an unspecified number of jet boats to the DoT leak. Latest reports include that Chrys McDryver from United Autoworker’s Union is interfering with the NSA, says boats are in the realm of Autoworkers job description, and some of them have faulty lighting.
Also, Zinke’s people from BLM are at the scene, turns out that in absence of knowing where the Communication Union representation is at, Al Sharpton and the NAACP are there now to fulfill whatever duties are necessary from the BLM team to find or retrieve those Lincoln Brand Welder’s that the Plumber’s Union discovered underwater somewhere at the Capitol Building.
Dorothy is showering, I am told, and requested a change of clothes from White House Staff, Kellyanne Conway. Trump sent Sarah Huckabee to head security measures at the event, as it escalates. Electricians Union and Farmworker’s are lobbied in the lounge at the Department of Labor, where the event started.
A Carpenter’s Apprentice was sent to Autozone at the request of McDryver, for a selection of lightbulbs for the jet boats brought by the Sheriff’s Association who have teamed with NRA to man the boats when or if the search gets underway once the light-bulbs are changed.
=====
9:57 pm:
Sources say Al Sharpton is interested in learning more about the Isaiah 41:10 and MS13 connection, wants to consult with Chavez, but is not aware that Mr. Chavez left out the side door, Kellyanne Conway is said to be stalling his efforts to make a connection to the Third Amendment, and Mr. Sharpton has made initial claims that the White House is in violation of the Third Amendment, citing that Kellyanne Conway is a terror soldier residing at the White House. Mr. Sharpton is consulting his Pocket Bible, as Chrys McDryver of UAW looks over those Sheriff jet boats for OSHA and DMV violations. In absence of Communications members, the UNCF is providing Call Age Services. Dorothy is in very good spirits considering the size and scope of the activities at the Capitol Building.
Farmworkers and Electricians Union representation is said to be passed out on the sofa’s in the lounge lobby at DoL.
I am told a Wizard has stolen some draperies from a storage closet at the Capitol Building, aided by Sarah Huckabee, and the two were last scene in a Secret Service surveillance trailer in the parking area, with a Lincoln Brand Hong Kong Chinese Knock Off Generator provided by Elaine Chao, running.
=====
10:19 pm:
That new Fish & Game Department of NAACP members is advising that the Wizard and Huckabee are just bait, trying to draw attention away from the Lincoln Welders, and towards Generators. Sharpton is referring to his Pocket Bible, opened to Genesis, reports say.
=====
10:28 pm:
Sources at the scene say there has been a turn of events. The Kansas Arbitration Consulting Firm, Dorothy, has convinced all involved that since the International Electricians Union representation, Leonard Static is not available to change the light-bulbs on the Sheriff’s Association Jet Boat’s and is passed out with Lilly Spade of the Farmworkers Union in the lounge lobby at the Department of Labor, that everyone will adjourn the convention until Friday, to discuss if they all wish to continue on Monday, when the Plumber’s Union asked them all to “Please Wait. Please Wait. Please Wait. Please Wait. Please Wait. Please Wait.....”

Low Calorie Meals
BREAKFAST: Big Green Crepe💚 -1 cup spinach -1 tbs almond meal, protein powder, or any combination -1 tsp wheat bran (optional) -1/2 tsp baking powder -1 egg white -2 tbs almond milk (water would probably work) -1 tbs applesauce Flavorings: vanilla extract, cinnamon, 1 tsp cocoa powder -sweetener to taste ***Blend all ingredients in a small blender until completely smooth. Fry like regular pancakes, or pour mixture onto a place and microwave for about a minute. You could even do this as a mug cake. Makes one BIG crepe or a few smaller pancakes Nutrition: approx. 90 calories - almost entirely from protein and HEALTHY fats (if you use almond meal), this is a flat belly recipe that fills you up for ages. Toast-less French Toast❌🍞 -1 tbs milk of choice -1/2 tbs Greek yogurt (makes it fluffier. You could probably sub regular yogurt, I cant vouch for it though) -3 tbs egg whites -1/2 tsp baking powder -pinch of salt -pinch of cinnamon -1/2 tbs mashed banana, applesauce, or pumpkin ***Whisk together all ingredients until they are foamy. Pour into a small baking dish and bake at 325 F for about 20 minutes (mine took 15 minutes in a toaster oven). The top should be a golden brown and stay puffed up an it when u take it out of the oven. Top with maple syrup to really mimic French toast flavor!! Nutrition: using fat free yogurt, almond milk, and pumpkin: 33 calories. Topped with 2 tsp sugar free syrup: 40 calories How to make Oatmeal😜 Not really a recipe, but this is how to make a HUGE bowl of oatmeal out of 35 calories. Start with 2 tbs quick oats. Add up to a full cup of water. It will look super liquid - that's what you want. Then microwave for at least 90 seconds, maybe even more. The oats will soak up the liquid and make a perfect texture. Add whatever flavorings you want (I prefer cinnamon and maple extract or a bit of cocoa powder). Seriously, this is the best breakfast ever, it makes LOADS out of a tiny bit of oats. Banana Pancakes🥞 -1 1/2 large bananas(ripe to overripe -2 eggs -1/8 tsp baking powder -maple syrup, butter, blueberries 59 serve (optional) ***Don't add too much banana. The pancake will not hold. There should be enough egg to hold mashed banana together. LUNCH/DINNER: Asparagus Rolls🌶 -4 spears of asparagus -1/2 roasted red bell pepper -1 tbs fat free cottage cheese -salt and pepper to taste ***Line a pan with tin foil or parchment paper. Wrap the asparagus with pepper, and put a scoop of cottage cheese on top of the pepper. Bake at 350 F for about 15 minutes or until cheese is bubble and asparagus is softened Nutrition: 40 calories Pad Thai🍲 -miracle noodles -1 tbs soy sauce for 2 servings -apple cider vinegar or lime juice -ginger+garlic (fresh or dried) -Bok Choy or other mixed stir fry veggies Nutrition facts vary, but will be most likely under 25 calories per serving, depending on how much veg you use. Favorite Zucchini Noodles🥒 -1/2 medium zucchini (16) -1/2 plum tomato (6) Sprinkle each of dried basil or mint (or use fresh, if you have it on hand) Dressing: I used apple cider vinegar with a splash of Walden farms white balsamic vinaigrette. You can use any vinaigrette you want, but I like to let the flavor of the veggies and herbs shine through by using something pretty plain. I think it would be delicious with a squeeze of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar and a pinch of 0 cal sweetener to balance it out. ***Use a vegetable peeler on the zucchini lengthwise to make thin strips like noodles. Chop up the tomato. Sprinkle on the herbs. Just before serving, add the dressing and toss to coat. If you're taking it for lunch, bring the dressing separately, or else the zucchini noodles will get soggy and deflated. Hot and Sour Soup🍜 General rules for soup - pick something broth-based with no pasta or other carbs. This soup is great because it's really flavorful without having many solid ingredients, so you can fill up on liquid without many calories. -1 tsp sesame oil (a splash) -1 cup sliced brown mushrooms -1 inch chunk of ginger, peeled and minced -2 garlic cloves, minced -8 cups vegetable or chicken broth -3 baby bok choy, chopped -3 tbs rice vinegar -siracha, to the taste (I use about 1 tbs) -1/4 cup soy sauce -1/2 tsp white pepper (black pepper is fine if you don't like white) -6 green onions, sliced -1/4 cup chopped cilantro ***In a large soup pot, heat the sesame oil over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and cook for about 5 minutes until they shrink and release some water. Add the garlic and ginger and sauté for 1 minutes more. Add the broth and bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and add the bok choy until it wilts. Add the vinegar, siracha, soy sauce, pepper. Remove from heat and add green onion. Serve topped with cilantro Mac and Cheese🧀 I buy mac and cheese sauce powder from bulk barn and add about 2 tbs per package of miracle (shirataki) noodles. No need to add water - the noodles release water as they heat. Just thoroughly coat the noodles and microwave until heated through. You can add sliced mushrooms, spinach, or whatever veggies you happen to have. Nutrition: 60 calories (makes 1-2 servings) Egg Drop Soup🍳 -2 chicken bouillon cubes (10 cal) -1 medium egg white (15 cal) -1 oz spinach (1 cal) -baby carrot (5 cal) Spices: ground or fresh ginger, parsley, touch of onion powder, salt and pepper Note: a lot of veggies would go great with this and keep it low cal. Mushrooms, peas, green onion, sprouts, etc. ***Combine ~1.5 cups water, cubes, cut up veggies, and sliced in a pot over high heat. While waiting to boil, whisk the egg white in a separate bowl and set aside. When cubes dissolve fully, reduce the heat to a soft boil and "drop" the egg. This is done by slowly pouring it in the soup. Don't just dump it in, or it will end up clumpy instead of stringy. Also don't drop it into a rapid boil, it will have the same affect. Continue to boil until broth is reduced how you like it and veggies are soft. DESSERT: Magic Chocolate Bar 🍫 -1/2 cup cocoa powder -1 cup unsweetened almond milk -1/2 cup 0 Calorie sweetener Optional add-ins: -chopped nuts -coconut -mint extract ***Mix all ingredients in a small pot over medium-low heat until it thickens. Pour into a shallow container and freeze until solid. Eat straight out of the freezer or else it will get messy. Nutrition: 1/8 of the recipe (this is a LARGE piece, probably a couple square inches)-25 cals Ana's Apple Pie Filling🍎 -1/2 apple, chopped and peeled -1/2 tsp sugar -1/4 tsp cinnamon -2 tbs water ***Heat up water in a pan, add the ingredients , stir until apples soften (about 5 minutes) and enjoy Nutrition: 45 calories Light Lemony Oat Cakes🍋 -1 cup vanilla soy or rice milk -1 tbs lemon juice -1 heaping cup old-fashioned oats (or 1 cup oat flour) -2 tsp baking powder -1/2 tsp baking soda -1/2 tbs tapioca flour -1 tsp lemon zest (outer peel of an organic lemon, or lemon flavoring) -1/8 tsp salt -1 tbs but butter or tahini -1 tbs maple syrup ***combine sour or rice milk and lemon juice in a mixing bowl and set aside. Blend oats in a spice grinder or blender until finely ground. Mix oat flour with tapioca flour, blaming powder, baking soda, lemon zest, and salt. Make sure there are no small lumps. In a blender or with a whisk, combine milk mixture, nut butter or tahini, and maple syrup. Blend well. Mix wet and dry ingredients. Spoon into a preheated griddle. The mixture will be very thin. When bubbles form and break, turn carefully and cook until lightly browned. Servings: makes about ten 3-inch pancakes) Nutrition: 67 calories Fat: 2 grams Carbs: 11 grams Protein: 2 grams Sodium: 200 milligrams Fiber: 1 gram Watermelon Sherbet🍉 -2 cups water melon, cubes and seeded -1/2 cup sugar -1/3 cup cranberry juice cocktail -1 envelope gelatin, unflavored ***Place watermelon in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Stir in the sugar. In a small saucepan, combine gelatin and cranberry juice cocktail. Let stand for 5 minutes. Stir mixture over low heat until gelatin is dissolved. Pour and stir the gelatin mixture into the melon mixture. Pour into an 8x8x2-inch baking pan. Cover and freeze for 2 hours or until frozen. Break up frozen mixture and place into a chilled mixer bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on medium to high speed or until the mixture is nice and fluffy. Return to the pan. Cover and freeze for 6 hours or until firm. Servings: 8 (1/2 cup) Nutrition: 83 calories Carbs: 20g Protein: 1g Fat: 0g 🌸I hope you all enjoy these wonderful recipes and please be safe🌸

Essay by Michael Almereyda, Filmmaker
Cinema is a matter of what’s in the frame and what’s out. —Martin Scorsese
We should be blessed if we lived in the present always, and took advantage of every accident that befell us, like the grass which confesses the influence of the slightest dew that falls on it. —Henry David Thoreau, Walden
In Cameraperson (2016), Kirsten Johnson has made a buoyant film about the weight of the world.
She lays out her process in a paragraph presented up front. What we’re about to see, she explains, has been patched together from material she has shot as a cinematographer for films directed by other people, in the course of a career spanning twenty-five years. “I ask you to see it as my memoir,” Johnson insists.
A memoir, yes, but one that is scant on autobiographical facts. You have to turn elsewhere to learn that Johnson studied painting and literature in the late 1980s at Brown University, where she had a political awakening, stirred by the anti-apartheid movement roiling the campus. Upon graduation, making an uncommon move, she transplanted herself to Senegal and interned there on a film written by the great Ousmane Sembène. In 1991, she was the first American to enroll at La Fémis, the French national film school, where she entered the camera department and discovered a vocation. She landed early cinematography jobs in France and Brazil.
Evolving from this global trajectory, Cameraperson is a nonchronological collage of raw and repurposed footage: forty-four distinct episodes (by my count) made up of sounds and images gathered for (but generally not appearing in) twenty-four separate projects. Most of the episodes are bridged by breaks of black frames, during which anticipatory sounds prepare for oncoming images. Locations are identified by title cards, and eleven people are given names and job descriptions, ranging from “Jacques Derrida / French philosopher”—a quick cameo, as the famous man impishly holds forth on a Manhattan street—to “Aisha Bukar / nurse, midwife,” a more substantial, recurring presence, granting us access to a natal unit in a Nigerian hospital, where the film arrives at one of its most harrowing sequences. We get scraps from high-profile documentaries—Laura Poitras’s The Oath and Citizenfour, on which Johnson served as a principal shooter, and Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11, for which she received an “additional camera operator” credit—but most of the movies cannibalized here are not especially well-known, and Johnson accomplishes her most probing portraiture by focusing on people encountered as strangers. Her inclusion, at regular intervals, of her own home-video footage confirms an impression of inspired and intimate rummaging. (This is a memoir that blurs the line between professional and private experience.) Ultimately, like a lavish quilt, or a bird’s nest, the film subsumes its source material on the way to becoming a complete and organic new thing.
More often than not, Johnson’s work takes her to places stamped by violence, death, and destruction, sites of collective grief and dread. Even if the worst of the mayhem has occurred in the past, she’s there to absorb and collect the residue, talking to survivors, bearing witness. Johnson supplies a few grace notes, musical interludes, flashes of scenic splendor, but for a film made by a cinematographer, there are bracingly few images that are merely pretty or picturesque. People are plainly what Johnson cares about most, and in this film she candidly prizes and examines her ability to use her camera to get close to whoever is in the frame. “Gettin’ close to everybody,” she murmurs, disarmingly, to an initially wary man in a Brooklyn boxing gym. The man smiles and relaxes, as if Johnson has cast a spell. She coaxes equivalent looks of complicity and acceptance from a boy in Kabul whose left eye has been blinded in a bomb blast; from an elegantly wizened Muslim woman in Bosnia and Herzegovina who, with a tight, tart smile, denies that the Serbs’ campaign of mass rape ever affected her family; and from her own mother, diminished by Alzheimer’s, regarding Johnson—and Johnson’s camera—with a mix of tenderness and fright.
The film has been crafted with self-reflexive knowingness. Shots that feature fumbling and reframing are integrated the way a confident painter builds a picture around bare canvas, loose brushwork, spattered drips. And there’s a steady pressing of a central nerve, a nagging question implicit in the most searching documentaries as well as the most trivial: At what point does the camera’s scrutiny become exploitative, invasive, voyeuristic, damaging? The question hovers throughout the film, despite Johnson’s evident gift for putting people at ease, respecting the pressure and pain of true confession. In sequence after sequence, she invites and captures intimacy, even or especially when her subjects don’t want their faces shown. (In these cases, Johnson’s camera follows their uneasy hands, and we see Scorsese’s axiom at work; what’s not in the frame adds eloquence to what is.)
As a self-portrait, Cameraperson is intriguingly elliptical, oblique. Early on, we see Johnson’s striding shadow, her camera rising from her shoulder like a jagged branch, an extension of her body, but in the course of the film she appears full-on only briefly, near the end. She doesn’t spell out a credo, or spill any outright confessions of her own. (In an overconfiding age, this may account for a good deal of the film’s power.) But Johnson’s overheard voice—a quick, open, guileless voice, quintessentially American—is there from the start, behind the lens, giggling and almost giddy. When her camera catches lightning slicing down from a wash of blue-gray Missouri clouds, she gasps, then stays steady and silent enough to take in the emptiness—a crash of thunder, its echo, a defiantly serene bird—then Johnson sneezes, twice, jostling the frame, undercutting any self-important claim to authority as the film’s title comes up.
Soon after, in Sarajevo, speaking offhandedly to an unseen collaborator, the cameraperson sketches her MO, talking like a teenager: “I always try to have some kind of relationship with people, like I’ll look them in the eye like ‘You see me shooting you, don’t you?’”
She shows us her twin toddlers in her Manhattan home (without giving a glimpse of a significant other) and spends time with her parents, inevitable augurs of mortality. Johnson’s father, on a casual walk, cheerfully displays a dead bird to the grandkids, while images of Johnson’s mother give way to shots of a container holding her ashes. (For the latter, Johnson keeps rearranging objects in the frame, adjusting the composition, as if trying to come to terms with the unadjustable limit of her mother’s life.)
In interviews, Johnson has expressed guilt and self-reproach about photographing her afflicted mother against her wishes. Yet, as she must know, some of her film’s most poignant moments emerge from this betrayal. How could Johnson resist recording her mother’s stunned face, trying to hold on to an identity slipping away before her eyes? Circling back to Scorsese, we can recognize that Johnson is confronting a larger fact: human presences are always fragile, fleeting, on their way to being out of the frame.
*****
You can entangle across time. You can entangle into the future, into the past. You can entangle through space. That’s what quantum entanglement means. It means that there’s another underlying layer of nature that we haven’t discovered yet. —Dr. Eric W. Davis, in Cameraperson
At some point in the editing process, Johnson seems to have taken her cue from the astrophysicist quoted above, riffing on the notion that we’re all entangled; time and space can’t always be taken literally; recorded reality can be reorganized to comply with memory and imagination. By this logic, less scientific than intuitive, people and places in Johnson’s memoir become entangled in occasional shared chapters, tethered by free-associational edits. The harsh wind in Wyoming, flashing through tall grass on the Johnson family ranch, makes Johnson’s mother stagger, wince, and seem to dwindle into a Giacometti figurine. With the grace of a cut, the same wind sweeps through a yellow hillside in Foča, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the rural village where a Muslim family has returned to their farm while contending with memories of genocide and war.
Similar associative links and leaps flicker throughout the film, but, halfway in, there’s a sequence that’s starkly explicit in its insistence on interconnectedness. Johnson serves up a series of landscapes where historic atrocities have occurred, now mute and tranquil crime scenes, mundane places conjoined by invisible carnage and, for the most part, a shared look of dreary ordinariness. The sequence includes sites of mass execution, torture, and rape, plus forensic shots of the drab interior of a pickup truck identified as the vehicle that dragged James Byrd Jr. to his death in the otherwise unremarkable town of Jasper, Texas. In this stretch, Johnson expresses a sustained note of anguish, like a war correspondent admitting to a case of secondhand PTSD, but she’s stoic about it, and, as her film offers a range of locations and perspectives, she’s irrepressibly alert to the bigger picture—a picture that includes antic dancing in Uganda, a woman embracing a fierce and humiliated young boxer after a lost match in Brooklyn, the flow of life around a roadside market in Liberia. It’s fair to say the “wonderful” God hailed by nine-year-old Kirsten in a preserved handwritten poem—“Your love never ends! / And my love to you will never end!”—has been displaced, in the grown cameraperson’s mind and eye, by a pantheistic understanding of the world, a sense of immanence and mystery that competes with evidence of unrelenting bad news. And so Johnson counterbalances bitter and abject scenes with proofs of compassion, consolation, even joy. And it’s no fluke that many of the film’s brighter moments involve children.
*****
Down with bourgeois fairy-tale scenarios . . . Long live life as it is! —Dziga Vertov
Cameraperson has been showered with sympathetic and insightful reviews, and hailed as a film without precedent. It doesn’t diminish Johnson’s work—its integrity, freshness, and force—to recognize that antecedents do exist. Dziga Vertov, the pioneering Soviet director of newsreels and kaleidoscopic documentary features, would not be spinning in his grave to consider his legacy extended and fulfilled in Johnson’s audacious and self-aware doc/essay/travelogue/memoir. Indeed, Cameraperson would make a provocative double bill with Vertov’s equally unclassifiable Man with a Movie Camera (1929), a dazzling chronicle of urban life channeled dusk to dawn through the lens of an itinerant cameraman, a tale told without intertitles or narration. (Vertov’s spectacular “day” was in fact filmed in four cities over a period of three years.) Man with a Movie Camera’s propulsive editing and hyper-aestheticized photography don’t jibe with Johnson’s levelheaded approach, but her anchoring ambition is aligned with Vertov’s: to record and elevate common experience, to uphold film as a reflection of reality rather than an escape from it, and, further, to create movies that open idealistically outward, providing a means for people to see their lives valued, honored, and in effect returned to them, even as they become part of a larger collective story.
In Chris Marker’s Sans Soleil (1983), we can find another singular, self-defining, soaring hybrid “documentary” experiment, a collage of fragmentary episodes candidly jigsawed together from a cinematographer’s accumulated outtakes. Marker uses magisterial narration to explicate his images, to question them, to expand their reach, constructing a philosophical inquiry into the nature of seeing, memory, time, consciousness; but strip away the voice-over and you can still take in Marker’s generous regard for the people he encounters, respect for their vulnerability, their otherness, their unique place within a vast human family.
All the same, Vertov and Marker, assigning their authentic, unstaged images to fictional cameramen, avoid the level of personal risk embraced by Johnson, who unabashedly (if incompletely) reveals her history, her unmistakable self, as the source of every frame. By the time we catch sight of her in Cameraperson, we can be forgiven for presuming to know her. She aims the camera at herself, standing beside her unsteady mother, sharing the older woman’s worried smile, and her eyes look haunted. The image emerges within a flashback, an editorial surprise, and it suggests that Johnson would agree with a primary Marker aphorism: “Being a photographer means not only to look but to sustain the gaze of others.” The gaze of others, we can see, carries a corresponding weight.

I said to the wanting-creature inside me: What is this river you want to cross? —Kabir
Voyeurism is related to cinema as lust is related to love. You can separate them—you can try to separate them—but to what end? The urge to look, to see and share private experience—whether displays of intimacy, acts of violence, the urgent facts of another person’s pain—is seldom pure and simple. How do we, filmmakers and film viewers, transcend voyeurism? How can a filmmaker’s craft and conscience elevate images from voyeurism to revelation?
Cameraperson reaches a kind of climax back in Foča, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the place Johnson visits most within the braided strands of the film’s structure. She documents her return five years after her initial journey, with music from the resulting 2011 film, an episode of the PBS series Women, War & Peace, brimming over into Cameraperson, the movie we’re watching while the gathered family watches themselves on a laptop screen. Johnson, of course, records this rapt audience, their charged attention, then the rich homemade meal that follows, coffee, a cigarette. The Möbius-strip circuit of giving and taking and giving back—the process of seeing, sharing, and accepting—brings Cameraperson to an ideal summit of reconciliation, peace, hope for the future. “We hope someday she can come back with her son and daughter,” a woman tells Johnson’s translator, “to see how peasants live.” Exactly the response Vertov was hectically hungering for.
One of the film’s most arresting and resonant images, for this viewer, occurs earlier in Foča, when an unnamed Muslim woman lifts a bowl high above her head, confidently spilling berries into another bowl held below her waist. The free-falling fruit makes an ecstatic blur, and the next cut shows the berries as they’ve landed and settled, as if artfully prearranged: a ready-made bouquet of whorled color—red, black, white, yellow—an instant metaphor for plenitude and renewal, raw experience transformed into poetry.
“Wow,” says the woman behind the camera. “It’s like magic.”
Yes—wow—it is.
Michael Almereyda’s documentary films include This So-Called Disaster, William Eggleston in the Real World, Paradise, and the forthcoming Escapes.

French toast and frozen key lime yogurt w strawberries <3
2 slices Healthy Life whole wheat bread + Walden Farms zero cal pancake syrup
1 egg white + splash Cashew milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and Butter Toffee Skinny Syrup (for sweet flavor)
1 Carbmaster Keylime yogurt
1 c frozen strawberries
Total kcalories: 220
——————————————
I mixed the egg white, milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and SS all together before soaking both toasted pieces of bread. Both slices were cooked on medium heat for about 4-6 mins on each side, and I’m using cinnamon and Walden Farms pancake syrup to dip (‘:
The frozen yogurt was made by heating up frozen strawberries in the microwave for 45 seconds to about a minute, just until they start to defrost and leak. I mixed the keylime yogurt in with the strawberries and put the bowl in the freezer for about 20-30 mins? Just until the top starts to get crystallized and frozen; at this point, too, it’s usually thicker and creamier underneath.
This meal gets a 10/10 bc that frozen yogurt literally sent me to god. Will be doing this again🌞

4 OUT OF 10 GROCERY LIST STAPLES Walden farms (ranch specifically) 0 calorie Nearly all of you have probably heard about this but click bait amirite?? Jk not click bait, this is genuinely a staple food of mine because it makes a lot of things taste better for ZERO CALORIES. If you add hot sauce to to it, and 0 cal spray butter, you can make a buffalo ranch sauce to add onto chicken breasts, a salad, or even some baked french fries. Its honestly a very versatile thing as I've cooked a bunch of different things in it using a walden farms/hot sauce or walden farms/a1 sauce combination. Walden farms is an amazing brand in general, ranch has just been what I've found to be the most readably available product. (And the most beneficial to me because ranch was a big reason i got to 265 lbs) (but now im down to 201 guys shh) (These are just my recommendations for people like me who cannot/will not eat high calorie things. These are to encourage people to eat at least /something/, especially something with nutritional value. I do not wish or have intentions to harm someone in recovery but i will exercise my right to do this and help other people who need options before they give up and eat nothing. Or, alternatively, those who may binge then purge as a result)

California Mid-century Architect John Lautner: Part One
“Shelter is the most basic human need.” – John Lautner
John Lautner one of California’s best-known residential architects of the mid-Twentieth Century designed dramatic unique homes, sometimes referred to as Googie Architecture (1) that were indicative of the futuristic aspirations and car culture of the 1950s. The term “Googie” architecture came from Lautner’s design for Googie’s Coffee House in Los Angeles, California (1). Among the best known of Lautner’s work are the “Leonard Malin House (Chemosphere), Paul Sheats House, and Russ Garcia House” (2).

John Lautner’s Early Years
John Lautner was born in Marquette, Michigan in 1911, the oldest of two children (3). His father, a German immigrant became the “head of French and German at the recently founded Marquette Northern State Normal School (now Northern Michigan University)” (2). Lautner’s mother was an artist and interior designer.
John’s parents were very interested in architecture; their home in Marquette was designed by architect and author of the book American Renaissance (1904) Joy Wheeler Dow (2). The Lautners designed and built their own summer cottage “"Midgaard", sited on a rock shelf on a remote headland on the shore on Lake Superior”(2); John helped out in its construction (3). John loved spending time in nature and considered the northern Michigan woods to be “heaven on Earth”(3).
“In 1929, young Lautner enrolled in the Liberal Arts program at his father's college”(3) and graduated with a degree in English (3). During his time in college, Architectural History was the only course in his studies related to architecture. During his college years, Lautner spent summers hitchhiking around the United States. His first trip to Los Angeles was in 1932 to attend the Olympic Games (4).
Lautner Joins the Taliesin Fellowship
In 1933 Lautner’s mother Vida read architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s biography and contacted Wright to inquire about the possibility of her son’s joining Wright’s new apprentice program at Taliesin (4). Lautner, however, has recently become engaged to “Mary Faustina (‘MaryBud’) Roberts and could not afford the fees” (2). MaryBud’s mother stepped in and agreed to pay for both John and MaryBud to attend Taliesin. There Lautner preferred the hands-on work duties of farming, building and cooking to those in the drafting room. John and MaryBud married in 1934 (2).
Under Wright John was involved “with a two-year project supervising a Wright-designed house in Marquette for MaryBud's mother” (2). Lautner also oversaw the construction of “Wingspread” in Racine, Wisconsin and was in part responsible for the construction of the Drafting Room at Taliesin West (2). Lautner had “served from 1933 to 1939 as one of Wright’s original Taliesin Fellows” (5).
The Lautners Move to Southern California
In 1938 MaryBud became pregnant so John and MaryBud left the apprenticeship. When Lautner set up his own architecture practice in Los Angeles in March of 1938, he let Wright know that he wanted to continue to assist the fellowship. Lautner worked on “eleven Los Angeles projects over the next five years” (2) and continued his association with Wright, supervising Wright’s “Los Angeles domestic projects: the Sturges, Green, Lowe, Bell and Mauer Houses” (2). In May of 1938, MaryBud gave birth the Lautner’s first child, Karol. The Lautners would have 3 more children: Michael John in 1942, Mary in 1944 and Judith in 1946 (2). Judith Lautner is the current President and Treasurer of the John Lautner Foundation (3).
John Lautner, Lautner Residence (1940), Los Angeles, CA . Image source.
Lautner’s first solo project in 1940 was a $2500 residence for the Springer family (2), but it was the design for his own home built in 1939 in Silver Lake, California (4) that got Lautner noticed. California architectural historian, Esther McCoy called the house a “marriage between Walden Pond and Douglas Aircraft” (4). Lautner’s work on the Bell and Mauer houses were also gaining the architect additional recognition. The influence of Frank Lloyd Wright’s later residential work can be seen in both the Lautner House and the Bell House. These projects were “featured in numerous publications over the next few years including … a three-page spread in the June 1942 issue of Arts and Architecture” (2).
Read “California Mid-century Architect John Lautner: Part Two”.

Walter Hoyle
Walter Hoyle is in danger of being one of the forgotten Great Bardfield artists due to the lack of information on him.
Hoyle was born in Rishton, Lancashire in July 1922. Hoyle's artistic education started at the Beckenham School of Art in 1938,
I persuaded my local art school to accept me, and presented as evidence of my serious intent, a series of drawings much influenced by Walt Disney. †
From Beckenham, Hoyle gained a place at as a student at the Royal College of Art from 1940-42 and again from 1947-48 after serving in the Second World War. During Hoyle’s time at the RCA one of his tutors was Edward Bawden, who encouraged him to develop watercolours and printmaking.
Walter Hoyle at home in Great Bardfield, NPG, taken by Geoffrey Ireland.
It was 1940, the phoney war was to about to end and the college was evacuated from London to Ambleside in the Lake District, famous for poets rather than artists. It was here that I was first introduced to printmaking – lithography – by a friend called Thistlethwaite, a fellow student from Oswaldtwistle (although these names are true, I mention them only because I like the sound they make). He prepared a litho stone for me with a beautiful finely ground surface and instructed me how to draw in line and wash. †
In 1948, During the RCA Diploma show, a visitor was so impressed by Hoyle's work that he was offered seven months' work in the Byzantine Institute in Istanbul, Hoyle accepted, the work he saw there made a strong impression. Italian art and architecture also influenced him at that time.

Early in 1951 when Bawden was commissioned by the Festival of Britain to produce a mural for the Lion and Unicorn Pavilion on the South Bank, it was Hoyle that he chose to assist him on account of his great talent. During that summer Bawden invited Hoyle on a holiday to Sicily.
Edward asked to see my watercolours. He looked very carefully and quizzed me about them, and in general was complimentary and encouraging. I felt I had passed some kind of 'examination. ♠
It was this holiday together that Hoyle would scribe into a limited edition booklet of 10 in 1990 and into a book in 1998 - “To Sicily with Edward Bawden” a limited edition of 350 copies with a forward by Olive Cook.

The move to Great Bardfield: Hoyle moved first to Great Bardfield in 1952, living for a time in a farm cottage on the outskirts of Bardfield near Great Lodge Farm. He lived and worked in the Great Bardfield area for twenty-two years and exhibited with the Bardfield artists in 1954, 1955 and 1956 when they would open their houses to the public for one weekend a year, rather than relying on London galleries. Hoyle met his wife, the ceramists and poster designer Denise Hoyle at at one of the Great Bardfield “open house” exhibitions in 1956, when his work was on show at George Chapman’s house.
It may have been Edward Bawden's painting classes and lectures at Brick House, or being in the hilly Essex countryside but it around this time that Hoyle became interested in English romantic painting: the work of Turner, Blake and Palmer and also in French art. Like other members of Great Bardfield, Hoyle designed for interiors with wallpapers and fabrics for Coles, Sandersons and the Wallpaper Manufacturers Limited.
One of Hoyle’s most popular works for book illustration came with a commission for the Folio Society in 1968 with Shirley by Charlotte Bronte.
