Hot-take: “Guardians of the Galaxy” is “Ready Player One” but done right

Both series focus on a man-child who is stuck in the past, glorifying all the pop culture of an older decade. They both refuse to grow out of this mindset, leading to tension with their friends and loved ones.

The difference here is that, while “Ready Player One” portrays the obsession over pop culture in a positive light, “Guardians of the Galaxy” recognizes the negative aspects of that mindset. It’s not just that Peter Quill is stuck in the past, he refuses to grow up since that would mean confronting the harsher aspects of his childhood. He clings onto the past since that reminds him of when his mother was alive and when he envisioned 1980s icons (namely David Hasselhoff) as his father figures.

However, Peter Quill eventually grows out of this mindset. He confronts his trauma over losing his mother and accepts what happened, signified by him finally opening his mother’s final gift. He also confronts his lost father issues by recognizing that his biological father was a monster and Yondu was the one who truly raised him (even comparing Yondu to his favorite icons). Once again, Peter moving on from his lost father issues is signified by receiving a gift. You can read this as Quill finally moving on from his childhood since he upgrades from a walkman (the technology of the 1980s) to a Zune (modern tech).

That’s not to say that Quill’s love for 1970s/1980s pop culture is a bad thing. Like, all the Guardians enjoy Quill’s music. It was his unhealthy obsession that was bad. 

On the flipside, Wade Watts never truly goes through a change like that. In fact, he’s rewarded in the end of the first “Ready Player One” because of his obsession with pop culture. Yeah, the first movie/book implied that Wade was changing for the better...but then the second book came out and immediately flushed all that potential positive character development away.

ready player two is out today, no i have no plans to read it in its entirety, yes i have read many excerpts posted to twitter, no ernest cline has not learned how to write, yes wade is still utterly intolerable, yes i still plan on decking ernest cline should i ever meet him for wasting my time and also lowering my iq as i read his shitty ass novel
