When Will We Know the U.S. Election Results? A Look at Presidential Election Timelines
Tumblr media
Every election year, millions of Americans and people around the world eagerly await the final results of the U.S. presidential race.
Check Live Result
However, if you’re expecting to know the outcome on election night, history suggests you might want to wait a bit longer. Despite election night projections, the official counting of ballots has never been completed on Election Day.
Tumblr media
Here’s what you need to know about when election results are typically announced—and how it’s played out in some of the most notable elections over recent decades.
Why Election Night Projections Aren’t Final?
In recent years, we’ve grown accustomed to news outlets calling a winner by the time we go to bed or wake up the morning after casting our votes. But local and state certification deadlines vary widely, often stretching from two days after Election Day to over a month.
Tumblr media
In past elections like 2000 and 2020, legal challenges and increased mail-in voting delayed final counts. With certain state laws like those in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin prohibiting early vote counting, we may again see a slower reporting process.
Remember: A delay doesn’t mean anything’s gone wrong. It simply means election officials are carefully counting each ballot to ensure accuracy.
A Look Back: When Were Presidential Results Announced?
Here’s a quick timeline of when the world learned the results in the last six U.S. presidential elections:
Tumblr media
2020: Biden vs. Trump
Election Day: November 3 Result: November 7 It took four days before news outlets projected Joe Biden as the winner over Donald Trump. A high volume of mail-in ballots due to COVID-19 delayed results in key states.
2016: Trump vs. Clinton
Election Day: November 8 Result: November 9, 3 a.m. EST In a late-night race, Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton was confirmed early the morning after Election Day.
2012: Obama vs. Romney
Election Day: November 6 Result: Before midnight Barack Obama’s reelection was called before midnight, securing his victory over Mitt Romney relatively quickly.
2008: Obama vs. McCain
Election Day: November 4 Result: Around 11 p.m. EST Obama’s first presidential win was called around 11 p.m. after polls closed, giving him a decisive victory over John McCain.
2004: Bush vs. Kerry
Election Day: November 2 Result: The following morning John Kerry conceded to President George W. Bush via phone shortly after 11 a.m., the day after Election Day.
2000: Bush vs. Gore
Election Day: November 7 Result: December 12 This election stands out as one of the most contentious. Al Gore and George W. Bush’s razor-thin margins in Florida led to a legal standoff. The Florida Supreme Court approved a recount, which the Bush campaign contested, leading to the U.S. Supreme Court’s intervention. The Court’s ruling on December 12, after weeks of recounts and court battles, awarded Florida to Bush by just 537 votes—making him the 43rd president of the United States.
Why Election Results May Be Delayed Again?
Extended polling hours, closely contested races, and laws around early vote counting could all contribute to delays in knowing the final outcome. While we may see projected results, the official tally follows a methodical, state-specific process to ensure accuracy. So, this year, as you await the results, remember that patience is key—and a longer wait doesn’t mean there’s trouble.
In every election, ensuring that every vote is counted takes time. Stay tuned, and keep an eye on state-by-state announcements as the official results roll in.

Gentle reminder to UK folks that if you don't like Labour there is no better election than this one to vote for a third party or independent who actually stands for what you believe in.
Every major poll is predicting a Labour landslide and a total collapse of the Tory party. The only reason to tactically vote Labour to "keep the Tories out" is if in exactly your seat the Tories (or worse Reform) are projected to be first or second place and no one else is close - but in a lot of seats the predicted second is not the Tories, it's Lib Dems or SNP or in some places even Greens, and that gives you the freedom to vote for what you believe in because the Tories aren't gonna get that seat anyway.
Remember: UK is not the US, and despite all that Labour and the Tories try to do this is not a two-party state. Vote pragmatically, yes, and mindful of harm reduction, but be rational and informed as well.

@ USAmericans that are following me, if you (like me) get anxious you'll somehow have issues with a mail-in or drop-off ballot: I forgot that in a lot of places (here's a site to check!) early in-person voting is an option, so I figured maybe you did too!
Lines are MUCH shorter than election day,
which means it's quick and you have more time to look things up at the voting booth if necessary,
and you have a LOT more ability to find a time that works for you than if you just vote on Nov. 5th (which I would be have been almost completely unable to go out and vote on).
Tumblr media
Early voting y'all it kicks ass. A quick google of "early voting (my city/county" immediately brought up the exact address, days and hours of where it was available. Will definitely patronize the fine folks at my local polling center again in four years assuming that. Things go well. And we still have a democracy in four years. OTL

I was doing research on the ArtPrize thing, because research is how I handle very nearly any issue, and I'm trying to set my expectations reasonably, given that it's one of the largest and most lucrative art competitions in North America. And I was reading up on the voting process, because some of the prizes are awarded based on popular vote. The first vote by an individual has to be placed on a smartphone in the geographic region of Grand Rapids, MI, but subsequent votes (one a day per entry) can be from anywhere, so long as the phone started in GR. There's $600,000 in awards and grants this year, so voting matters in determining who gets not-insignificant amounts of money.
You know how many votes were cast last year? 30,000. Thirty thousand. Across every category, not just for the winning art piece. That is not actually that many votes. I have more than that number of you right here, my poor captive audience.
Now, if I can just figure out how to get all of you into Grand Rapids during the month of September, I'd have this in the bag. It wouldn't have to be for long. Just a brief convention of fellow tunglr users, for just a moment, just a quiiiick....dash...c

On Voting in America
So one of the most profound comments on routine chores that I've ever encountered was, hilariously, the Pickle Rick episode of "Rick & Morty," where (after a lot of shenanigans have already ensued) this therapist absolutely lays Rick out:
"I have no doubt that you would be bored senseless by therapy, the same way I'm bored when I brush my teeth and wipe my ass. Because the thing about repairing, maintaining, and cleaning is: it's not an adventure. There's no way to do it so wrong you might die. It's just work. And the bottom line is some people are okay going to work and some people, well, some people would rather die. Each of us gets to choose."
I think about this at least once a week — usually while I'm doing my laundry or sweeping or some other task that needs doing and won't get me anything more than clean clothing or a dog-hair-free floor. There's no Pulitzer for wiping down your microwave or scrubbing your toilet; no one's awarding you for getting all the dishes out of the sink. At best you have the satisfaction of crossing it off your list.
Voting is very much the same (and I'm talking about the US here, as an American). Sure, you sometimes get a sticker; but nobody's going to cheer for you. There's no adventure here, no potential for anything more than crossing something off of a list. It's a chore, something that needs doing in order to repair, maintain, and yes even clean. So I get why people don't like doing it.
And I've decided I don't give a shit.
Do it anyway. Your country takes astonishingly little from you — taxes, the once-in-a-blue-moon jury duty, and a theoretical draft that hasn't been used in over half a century and likely will never be again — but it asks you (asks! not requires! not demands!) to vote once or twice a year. It's not always easy; especially in conservative states, the impediments to vote can be ridiculous. But it is once a year and unlike in our nation's all-too-recent past, you will not die if you do it.
In fact, the worst outcome from voting these days is that the person or issue that you vote for loses — but you won't know if they lose until after the election. Polls are less accurate now, for a whole host of reasons; you cannot know until after the election who or what will win. This makes your vote more valuable than possibly ever before.
Use that power. Not because it's exciting or even rewarding, but because your vote is what keeps our country's metaphorical teeth from falling out and our metaphorical ass from stinking.
Brush, wipe, vote.

Me: passes a sign with three different TERF dogwhistles, telling me to vote "no" on NYS Prop 1
Me: well I assume I'm voting yes on whatever that is.
looks it up
The proposal in question:
"This proposal amends Article 1, Section 11 of the New York Constitution. Section 11 now protects against unequal treatment based on race, color, creed, and religion. The proposal will amend the act to also protect against unequal treatment based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, and pregnancy outcomes, as well as reproductive healthcare and autonomy.  The amendment allows laws to prevent or undo past discrimination."
(bold in original)
Oh yeah, definitely voting yes.
To the TERF in Niskayuna: come on out. I just want to talk. No really, I'm pathetic in a fight, but I need to tell you to your face what an awful person you are.
Also: notice how they're all too happy to throw the disabled, immigrants, women who've experienced pregnancy-related discrimination, and queer people as a whole under the bus if it means excluding trans women.

Due to a lot of feedback on the nature of this blog, and how the meme format can come across as insensitive and shameless, I'm considering switching to a news only post format, without the use of the destiel meme. I greatly enjoy sharing information about current events, and would like to continue doing so in some way.
So I am making this poll to ask everyone their opinion on the way I do things, and for suggestions to improve my content.
