425 Works on AO3 Check In

I've now got 425 works up on AO3, so it's time for my scheduled check in on fandom behavior in regard to my works. As a reminder, you can find past entries in this series using the "griselda gimpel AO3 checkins" tag.

Not really anything to report for this check in, honestly. I haven't gotten any harassment since last check in. I did get a couple-few mildly irritating comments on "A Lap Dance for Mr. Bonzo", but nothing that rises to the level of harassment. Just the usual "people forget that when they leave a comment, an actual person will be reading it".

Anyway, last check in, I talked about fandom as a panopticon. This time, I'm thinking about the temporal nature of fandom misbehavior.

Okay, one of the fics I wrote recently was another Sylki fic. And I know there are Sylki Antis. They've never bothered me, personally, but I know they exist. And I wasn't in the Voltron fandom, but my friend Stitch was, and she's told horror stories about the fan misbehavior in that fandom. And I was in the Our Flag Means Death fandom, and I know how toxic the Izzy Antis there were.

Loki season two ended a bit ago. There's still a lovely Sylki community here on tumblr I belong to, but I imagine the fandom has died down a bit. I know Our Flag Means Death has, and I haven't heard of Izzy fans getting harassment recently. Voltron's also faded, it seems.

So...where did the toxic fans (or anti fans) in those fandoms go afterward? Did they mature and stop harassing people? Did they leave fandom all together? Or are the toxic fans of one fandom the same toxic fans of fandoms that were popular in years past? It's definitely worth study if someone has a good methodology.

(I am unable to be the one to conduct this study. I block toxic fans on their fist offense.)

Anyway, to recap, in total:

In the Our Flag Means Death fandom, I got a harassing anonymous Ask on tumblr for being an Izzy fan.

In the This Is How Your Lose the Time War fandom, I got an angry comment on a fan fic because it featured a pit bull. Yes, the dog. No, this one will never stop being hilarious to me.

In The Magnus Protocol fandom, my Dickonzo fic got mocked on tumblr.

I've had multiple instances of getting angry comments or my work reported because I talked about racism.

Coming up, I'll be posting an Ouizzy fic and a Dickonzo fic for two of my big bangs, so we will see what the response to them is.

It was routine: their weekly game night to play whatever new game Pidge managed to get her hands on. Simple. Easy. Normal.

But tonight was not normal, not even close. They woke in an old house on a hill with flashlights as their only means of light, dressed like the game’s characters and clutching to each other for support.

He was straining to see when a flash of lightning shook the house and showed where they were. Pidge ran to his side, feeling the brush of his skirts against her bare legs. They were at the top of a hill surrounded by barren trees and fog that consumed any other distinguishable characteristics of the area.

Keith pulled at the handle of the large oak doors. They didn’t budge, and before anyone could convince him otherwise, he jumped back and took a running start into the door. He stumbled back with a hiss, gripping his shoulder.

“We’re locked in,” Keith announced. And another flash of lightning showed the gentle slope of land leading to the house.

They were on a house on a hill.

Pidge rotated on the ball of her foot to look each member in the eye. If this was the game, how would they win? And who would betray them?

“So what do we do now?” Shiro asked, looking directly at Pidge. She glanced down the entrance way, looking at the old stairs and the way boards were broken in the middle and the termites that crawled along the banister.

cracks knuckles* alright this is going to be more of a rant than an analysis because i’m basing this on both my research, but also how it felt to personally be baited by these shows. there are obviously more pieces of bad (almost every horror movie) and good ones but these are the ones i’ve watched.

please keep in mind that i am but one queer and everyone has different opinions.

Supernatural (CW) 2005

This show is 15 years old and just ended. From season 5 till 15, there has been tension between two of the lead characters. They were constantly shipped together and not only did the entire fandom know about this ship but so did almost all of Tumblr. On top of that, the actors and show runners knew about it as well. Which is why it makes it ridiculous that it was constantly pushed aside while the romantic coding  kept happening, even after show runners dismissed it as being intentional. The Destiel (Dean x Cas) case has been going on for years, and as the show came to its end, many fans had hope. But N O P E. Instead, we got a love confession from Cas where Dean looked like he was near constipated and the Cas was killed and sent into a fiery place that was not hell but s u p e r  h e l l.

Sherlock (BBC) 2010

Just like Supernatural, this show was renown on Tumblr for not only how good it was, but its hinting at a potential relationship between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. But again, like Supernatural, the intentional tension between the two characters was denied by producers. This caused an uproar within the fandom, and even left some people believing that, after the last season aired, it had been a joke and the producers were hiding a “secret, unaired season” because they had felt so robbed by this show that had implied something and denied it.

The 100 (CW) 2014

We got lesbians. We got background gays. We were happy. Then, all of a sudden, one of them is killed for no reason. Did it advance the plot? No. Was she fighting and died in battle? lol no. She was doing literally nothing and got shot and died. And then the producers kept bringing her back once a season in the form of a ghost or illusion because why? Because she was a fan favourite queer character. ✨bury your gays and sparingly bring them back for profit anyone?✨

Voltron: Legendary Defender (Netflix) 2016

*deep breathe* This one is a special disaster. Not only was there romantic tension and romantically coded scenes for 7 seasons, but producers, voice actors and artists working on the show repeatedly said “don’t worry klance (Keith x Lance) shippers, you’ll be happy”

. … w h e r e??? You code one of their scenes with a sunset in the background while they talk about love and then one of them goes on a date with someone who has declined his advances for 7 seasons but now in season 8 decides to do a full 180. Not only that, but you announce at a Comic Con (a convention) that a character is gay and has a fiancé, only to kill off the fiancé and never make it explicit in the show except at the last second of the last episode where he marries a no name character. 

Personally, i’d like to say a big fuck you to the show that strung me along for 2 years and never stopped saying we’d be happy to then pull the rug out from under us and call us crazy for thinking anything from the past 8 seasons was intentional.

Scooby-Doo (2002) 

While not being outwardly queerbaiting, this movie’s filmmaker has just revealed some shocking news, which wasn’t at all shocking to the gays who had watched this movie over the years. In July of 2020, James Gunn, the filmmaker of Scooby-Doo, revealed in a podcast that, initially, Velma was explicitly gay in his script, but then the studio watered it down until it became nothing. This isn’t an example of baiting as much as it is changing a character’s initial design to “better fit an audience”. The worst part of all this is that with Velma’s character having been written with a l i t t l e queer subtext, people had been theorizing about if since the movie came out, but were always yelled at by the internet for “imagining something that isn’t there”. But now, even with it being said that the initial point was for her to be gay, people have no objections to still refusing to accept it. Why?? So we can’t get the subtext gays OR the confirmed gays?? Make it make sense.

Brooklyn 99 (NBC) 2013

To have the queer characters firstly introduced without mentioning their sexualities and have it brought up naturally was so goddamn nice to see, because no one does a big deal about it unless they ask for that. This show is amazing in general but the way they show their queer characters is *chefs kiss*.

She-ra and the Princesses of Power (Netflix) 2018

This. Show. My heart SOARS. It's just a remake of an old show so absolutely nothing was ever expected, but then it was sprinkled in and ENDED WITH A BANG. And it was so beautiful and real to see the struggle of two friends who care for each other and want to be together but have different visions of the world fall in love. And they also had characters with disabilities, a non-binary character and jUST SUCH A GOOD SHOW.

Kipo and The Age of Wonderbeasts (Netflix) 2020

This is a case where you go into it not expecting anything and are BLOWN AWAY by the bare minimum. And not because it’s bad!! It's mind blowing because this is the simple representation we need!! Not something over the top, but an every day relationship. It’s just two boys falling in love and going on dates and being nervous around each other, yet i was so stunned. Because it’s not shown enough. I should not be this excited over something that should be this normal. 10/10 though this show is so good for all kinds of representation.

Steven Universe (Cartoon Network) 2013

This show did so much for queer representation with its general message of loving everyone and loving who you want. Especially since it was aired on Cartoon Network, a channel for kids, it was able to help normalize something so looked down upon in some circles. It made it easy to watch for s o m e people because it's a cartoon but it's so beautiful to see these ladies so in love with each other, both platonically and romantically and we see them have a family dynamic that isn’t a “nuclear family”. Rebecca Sugar (creator) really said “lemme just break all stereotypes real quick”.

Adventure Time (Cartoon Network) 2010

It's the “knowing a fanbase shipped something so hard that the creators made it canon” for me. This relationship had been theorized by fans for years, but it had never been explicit in the show. When the finale episode came out and the two shared a kiss, it was a moment of celebration. The producer of the show said that it had not really been planned but when the episode was being made, the choice of what happened was given to one of the artists (bless your soul Hanna K. Nyströmthe). And as the show releases little bonus episodes, its latest was centered around Marceline and Bubblegum and their relationship. AND WE LOVE TO SEE OUR DOMESTIC LESBIANS BEING HAPPY AND IN LOVE.

Yuri on Ice!!! (anime) 2016

The fact that an A N I M E gave us a love story between two men is mind boggling and it makes me so happy!! Especially because it's a Japanese show and they’re very conservative about these things just makes it more emotional. The creators said they wanted to make the anime take place in a world where gay/straight isn’t a thing, it’s just love (ladies, you’re going to make me cry). So as the weekly episodes came out and fans start speculating, THEY GAVE US THE LAST FEW EPISODES FULL OF ROMANCE AND EMOTIONAL SCENES BETWEEN THE TWO AND THEN THEY GET R I N GS?!???!! You watch for the figure skating, you stay for the figure skaters that are in love.

Shadowhunters (Freeform) 2016

*insert me being frustrated that the actors are straight so we can move on from that disappointment*

This show really said “let’s name a whole episode after this couple because they deserve it”. But seriously, they gave us two characters whose entire plot does not center around their sexualities while still showing us the differences in a relationship between someone experienced and someone new at this. They were both powerful and amazing characters apart from each other, with their own story lines and goals but they loved each other so much omgs. SO MUCH. 

It was so great to watch.

Love, Simon (2018) 

There’s a lot of disagreement on whether this movie is good representation or not. However, we need to take into consideration that this was Hollywood’s first movie with a main character that was gay, where the story’s focus was on Simon’s love story. The biggest problem, for me at least, was that the actor playing Simon is a straight man and not queer. My problem is not with him, but the fact that there are other actors that are gay and that could have played Simon just as well. (the love interested was however played by a queer actor so ✨progress✨)

All in all, this movie does represent what a lot of queer kids have to go through: being outed at school, how they then come out, the bullying and doubt they go through.

The book is also really good.

Call Me By Your Name (2018)

This movie is so aesthetically pleasing and was able to capture the confusion and heartbreak felt by a boy who’s struggling with his own feelings towards a man. His inner conflict and joy and l o v e he feels but doesn’t know how to deal with is so well communicated through the screen and just breaks your heart because it feels so real.

But again, they could’ve gotten gay actors to play gay characters…

through having this list here, i want to show you that it’s not hard for creators to give good queer representation. the LGBTQ+ community isn’t asking for much, we just want to be well represented on screen as just a regular character, not some token queer kid there for the diversity points. having been exposed to so much queerbaiting and just not seeing any representation on screen, i always get over-excited when i see a queer character, and that’s not how it should be. it should be a normal thing, something you can find in most pieces of media, just like there’s a straight white cisgender person in everything.

and they seriously need to start casting queer actors for queer characters...

1. What fandoms do you write for?

OPM and AtLA. I have a Miraculous Ladybug fic, but the creator is a nightmare and I hate the way the show treats the main character (literally the creator said part of the show’s episode formula is the main character “learns a lesson” every episode: usually through humiliation) and all the characters of color so I really don’t write for it anymore.

2. What pairings do you write for?

Batarou, Mumensai, and I do general fics.

3. What is your most popular fanfic?

My Miraculous Ladybug fic. By like. a lot akfdjhlgkjhfdlkg

It’s got triple the subscriptions and bookmarks, double the hits, and more kudos than any of my other fics. And I haven’t updated since January.

4. Do you write original stories as well?

I do! I’m a creative writing major, so I do a lot of memoir nonfiction and poetry, but I also write fictional short stories.

5. What fanfic of yours should everyone have read?

I don’t think there is one! Different strokes and all. But if you weren’t aware, I’m working on an ATLA fic rn about Zuko trying to repair his relationship with Azula. Not for this fandom, but a fun fic for me because it’s a bit out of my wheelhouse.

Out of the ones I’ve been in, voltron.

7. What is a ship you will never write for?

There are...a lot. For the sake of my mental well being, I will not list them. But I will say any ship between a teen and someone in their mid twenties or beyond is a no go for me.

Begrudgingly, Ao3. I have my issues with Ao3 and I think I’ve made those pretty clear (and they’ve gotten me into some hot water lmao) but it’s a good place to put fics.

10. How do you stay motivated to finish what you’ve started?

I could not tell you. I am so bad at staying motivated. Certain fics I love writing. Others feel like I’m pulling teeth.

11. What’s your longest fanfic?

Hidden Horns. By a lot. like 20k words a lot.

12. Do you want to break your readers‘ heart or make them laugh?

A bit of both, but I lean towards laughing. The world needs more light.

13. What is your planning process?

Depends on the fic. For short ones or oneshots, there really isn’t one. For longer fics, I’ll have an outline, but a lot of times I’m laying tracks as I go. If I think of a good scene or line, I’ll write it down and just keep it at the end of my doc until it comes up in the story.

15. OCs or no OCs?

OC’s only when they’re necessary for plot. For example, Madame Oshitani in Hidden Horns only really showed up because I needed a piano teacher, and I couldn’t have it be an existing hero. Outside of that, I tend to avoid putting OC’s in fics, because I find them disruptive when I’m reading fics.

16. Do you use sentence starters, writing prompts and/or fandom headcanons for your fanfics?

Sometimes! Hidden Horns was based off of this fanart. If they are, I make sure to note that in the notes.

They’re difficult in different ways, but original is way harder.

Original work means there’s zero scaffolding to build off of except for the scaffolding you make yourself, and there’s a lot of issues with worldbuilding and creating complex and relatable characters.

Fanfic relies on a solid understanding of existing characters and dynamics, as well as the internal logic of the world. The scaffolding is there, but often times it’s stifling.

30. What writing software do you use?

Nope. I probably should though.

32. Past or present tense?

Past. I can’t consistently write in present.

I Want To Be A Paladin

This was for the Paladin / Thief square on the Bingo card, but I did NOT get it written in time. I’ve got an outline for one more story based on the bingo card after this that I didn’t get to do, but since I’ve got them outlined, I’d like to still do them.

I hope this appeals to someone else besides me XD

Shiro’s steps slowed as he walked, body hesitating without his consent as he approached the door to Lance’s room. The halls of the military hospital were quiet at night, only the night staff moving between the rooms on their rounds. Well, only the staff and himself. One of the perks of being ‘Takashi Shirogane: Captain of the Atlas’ was that the staff were willing to bend the rules for visiting hours slightly to allow him to visit his former team - his friends - while they recovered from the injuries they sustained in the last battle.

Lance was the last of the human Paladins Shiro had yet to visit in the hospital.

As soon as he could get away from his duties he’d gone to see Keith. The Black Paladin was still suffering the effects of the concussion he’d sustained during their last battle, although he'd refused any of the stronger painkillers he’d been offered despite the pounding headache he had. Instead he’d opted for as much nausea medication as he was allowed and conversations held in low voices only, which Shiro disapprovingly complied with. At least he was lucid; according to Kroalia he’d been worse in the varga or so immediately after he woke up, calling her ‘Crystal’ and asking her several times to slow the bed down because they were going too fast for him to steer it properly.

He drifted off to sleep mid-sentence, so Shiro had left him to rest and gone to visit Pidge next, sparing a quick but fond greeting to Matt and Sam Holt as they left her room to hunt down a late dinner for themselves. Pidge was still a bundle of energy despite being bedridden, talking easily with Shiro about what her family had been doing and how things were in the universe outside the Garrison while slowly making her way through what was left of her own dinner. Shiro stayed talking with her much longer than he should have, content to sit beside her and listen as she jumped from one topic to the next, some combination of her injuries,the painkillers she was on, and exhaustion rendering her unable to stay fixed on any single thing long enough to really finish a thought. By the time she was nearing the end of one idea she was already moving on to the next improvement she could make or the next thing she needed to look up. Shiro excused himself with instructions for her to sleep once the flow of words slowed down.

Hunk was the next closest, so Shiro made sure to check in on him to make sure he was okay. His family had snuck him extra food for dinner; The fact that he still had some tako poke left to offer Shiro told him more about how Hunk was really feeling than any number of assurances that he was doing fine and was just a little banged up around the middle.

Shiro had eaten all of the offered squid embarrassingly fast, not realising exactly how hungry he was until he’d started. It didn’t hurt that the food was amazing, which he’d mentioned about half a dozen times before Hunk had laughed, followed immediately by a pained grimace and a promise to tell his Mom how good Shiro thought her poke was.

Shiro beat a rather guilty retreat from Hunk’s room after that.

That left him here, slowly approaching Lance’s door. He hadn’t spoken much to Lance since his resurrection, at first because he was unconscious, then because Keith was a constant shadow at his side, then because he’d been traveling with Pidge… There were a lot of excuses as to why he hadn’t talked to Lance, but they all amounted to the same thing: Shiro knew he should talk to talk to Lance at some point, and he hadn’t. He didn’t even know why he hadn’t. Perhaps it was because he’d connected with Lance for a moment within Voltron when he’d been unable to reach anyone else.

Maybe it was because his clone been closer to Lance and worked with him more than Shiro had before his untimely demise, and Shiro hadn’t quite integrated all those memories. He’d spoken to Pidge about what happened during his time inside the Black Lion while riding with her, and she’d given him the cliff-notes version of everything his doppleganger had done, helping give context to the few scattered memories and sensations that had been trickling back into his mind through the cracks, but he still felt like there was a lot missing. Fleeting moments where an ache bloomed in his chest that felt familiar and completely foreign all at once, where he wanted to turn one way or move another, expecting something that just wasn’t there. A sensation that he should remember why he felt the way he felt, only to find nothing.

He’d stalled for long enough. He was going to go see Lance now, and if he was already asleep, that was fine. If he wasn’t, Shiro was going to sit next to him and talk to him like an actual adult. Holding that decision firmly in his mind, he covered the final three steps across the hall to Lance’s door and raised his floating hand to knock.

A pained, rasping sound beyond the door had him freezing before he made contact.

A shock of cold panic flooded over him as he shouldered the door open and dashed in, mind already racing itself to provide the worst case scenario. How badly had Lance been hurt? Was he having trouble breathing? Should Shiro be calling a nurse? His chest had been damaged, right? What if his lung had been punctured or collapsed or something, and the medical staff had somehow missed it, and now Lance was-

-Sitting on the hospital bed with his blankets pooled around his waist, staring at him in uncomprehending surprise. Shiro scanned over him quickly, checking for any visible sign of an untreated injury only to find treated bruises and bandages, nothing more. Tears ran over Lance's cheeks to drip from his chin and the tip of his nose, and his eyes were red and puffy, making both their natural blue colour and the dark circles under them stand out in equal measure.

As Shiro watched, Lance’s expression fell from surprise to horror before he turned deliberately away to hide his face and slide his hands under the blankets. Shiro’s panic faded into confusion and concern. It was obvious that Lance had been crying, so why was he trying to hide it? And what had he hidden under the blankets as soon as he’d realised that Shiro was there?

Lance scrubbed his face on his shoulder, using the hospital clothes he’d been put in to wipe some of the tears of his face while sniffing as subtly as he was able. “Shiro,” he croaked in greeting, voice low and rasped. Shiro flinched in surprise at the sound - his throat sounded like it had been badly injured during the fight, although Shiro didn't want to think about how. “I wasn’t expecting any other visitors today.”

“Lance?” Shiro stepped towards the bed, hesitating at the edge before sitting. “What’s wrong?”

Lance’s shoulders hunched up, his whole being tense for a long moment before he slumped and turned back towards Shiro. Something in Lance’s expression was familiar to him; a combination of hurt, defeat and sadness shining in his eyes as they met Shiro’s own.

He felt that familiar ache all over again, but he tamped down on the sensation and forced himself to smile as encouragingly as he could manage.

With a sigh, Lance pulled his hands out from under the blankets and held them out towards Shiro. “Veronica found these in the cockpit after the fight.” He paused to clear his throat, doing little to make his voice sound less rough than it had before. If anything it sounded more raw. “She thought they might be important to me, so she bought them here. Laughed at me a bit for being a big nerd first though.”

Shiro held out his floating hand, allowing Lance to place two objects on his palm. Lance’s hands lingered for a breath before he drew them back, letting his fingers brush briefly over the tips of Shiro’s own on the way back to his lap.

It took a long moment of staring at the gray figurines in his hand in confusion for a memory to spark.

They were Monsters and Mana figures. Lance’s Thief and Shiro’s Paladin. “You...you kept these?” He whispered.

Lance bit his lip and nodded. “It- It’s stupid, I know. I keep having to tell myself that he - it - He wasn’t really you, that he was sent in as a spy or sleeper agent or something. And I’m dumb, so I keep trying to tell myself none of it was real, we didn’t really…” he paused, taking another rasping breath, “we didn’t…” he tried again, only to choke back another sob before regaining control of his voice. “But then I look at that figure, and all I can think is that, whoever he really was, he just-”

Lance’s hands tightened on the sheets over his lap, words tumbling over each other as they fought to be first out of his mouth. “All he wanted was to be a Paladin. That was the best thing he could think of. He tried so hard to get back to us, and even though he was in pain all the time he just wanted to be a Paladin, and- I mean, I know it was just his programming or something Haggar did to him to make him want to fill your position, but I just- I just…”

Shiro didn’t catch the rest of Lance’s rambling. Too many thoughts and feelings were suddenly assaulting him, drowning out the rest of the world in a rush.

- Being in the Black Lion, but this time from within the Clone’s body. Begging them to let him pilot because the people he cared about most in the universe were in danger, and he could do nothing. Genuine fear of being without a way to help, being useless -

- Sitting with his team, playing an adventure game that made him feel foolish and carefree. Getting to play out all the ridiculous fantasies of being a hero he’d always had -

- Wanting so badly to be someone who was unequivocally good. Someone who would always be good, no matter what he had to do. Someone who was still him, but certain beyond any doubt that they were a good person -

- A Paladin. All Shiro - that other Shiro - wanted to be was a Paladin -

- Lance joining him on subsequent playthroughs, playing a Bard once and an Alchemist once, before switching back to his Assassin / Thief character again so that Shiro didn’t feel so awkward always playing his Paladin -

- The feeling of Lance beside him, feeling the warmth of his body whenever they traded the dice back and forth, whenever Lance would nudge him after a particularly daring maneuver -

- Nights spent together re-working their stats and build, planning the next part of their grand, meaningless adventure. A feeling of camaraderie he hadn’t had in a long time, as equals rather than captain and subordinate -

- The feeling of being alone with Lance, of laughing and being invested in what they were doing -

- Corran’s baffled enthusiasm, always coming up with new adventures for them even though the pair spent an entire session on a meaningless quest to set up a random turnip seller with the local tavern owner -

- Nights spent with Lance talking about their characters relationships bleeding into talking about themselves -

- The feeling of Lance hovering beside him, always watching him, always ready to step in -

- Knowing that he was someone doing good, letting himself believe that he was doing good things -

That hollow ache came back in full force, knocking the breath out of Shiro as the barrage of new memories clamoured for attention, not letting themselves be sorted or settled into a timeline yet. He’d originally chalked the feeling up to his missing bond with the Black Lion now that Keith had taken over full time as their Paladin, but he didn’t believe that was all it was any more. That was part of it, there was definitely a new empty place inside him where the Black Lion used to sit that he dealt with by keeping busy and taking command of the Atlas. But that wasn’t all of it. That hole hadn’t only held one thing. It was naive to think it had.

“- And I don’t know if I’m the bigger jerk for being sad that I don’t have that anymore when I know how much worse it is for you! I mean, how selfish do I have to be? It’s disgusting, but I can’t just make those memories go away, and… I’m so sorry, Shiro. I don’t think I can say it enough, but I’m so, so sorry.” Lance finished breathlessly, fresh tears rolling down his face. “I don’t think I can ever make it up to you, but I promise I’ll try, okay? I promise, every day I’ll try.”

Shiro wasn’t sure exactly how much of Lance pouring his heart out he’d missed, but that last bit was something he could try to respond to. He could tell Lance not to regret anything he did with the Clone. He could tell Lance that the Clone was him, just a him that was always in pain and afraid. He could tell Lance how much his presence meant to that other Shiro, how much it was starting to mean to him…

“I…” Shiro gasped, feeling tears spring unbidden to his eyes. He would absolutely tell Lance all of that. As soon as he could get out more than a few words, he’d tell Lance everything. He promised himself that.

Lance’s eyes widened, the flow of words stopping as he took in Shiro’s shaking form. He reached forwards cautiously, hands sliding up Shro’s arms to rest on his shoulders and neck, a gently offer of physical contact that Shiro ate up and dived in for more of. In a heartbeat he’d fallen forwards to wrap his arms around Lance’s chest, careful of the bandages and tubes that wound their way under his scrubs. Gentle over the bruises.

The only thing that he could force out of his mouth was a single phrase.

“I want to be a Paladin again.”

Lance’s arms tightened around Shiro as sobs rattled his frame, pulling him in and letting his own head rest atop Shiro’s. It felt like understanding.

I swear to god I can write happy and fluffy. But it’s not this story. Or the next one. Maybe I should challenge myself to make the one after that be pure candy fluff and niceness without smut.

Or I could write my first Hanahaki, since I’m a fandom rube and haven’t done a bunch of stuff >_>

 No doubt her face went pale, and her hands shook as they grasped the arms of the throne, tight as chains. No doubt that he noticed, and that his heart sank at her reaction, even as his father - our father - questions what the matter is. 

 "Mother. Answer me truthfully: is he my twin?" 

 A adaptation of a tale about a noble prince, his beastly brother who desires a bride, and some cows.

Voltron Season 8 review thoughts and theories.

Well folks I’ve just seen the end of the Legend of Voltron. I must say Dreamworks have defiantly made this season one to remember. 

I knew the first episode would be an aftermath of Sendaks invasion of Earth in season 7 but what I didn't expect was to see the original Voltron Defender of the universe series appear in this show and the look on Lances face when Hunk said it shipped Kieth and Allura ohh ho priceless! 

One other thing was Lance actually asking Allura on a date and actually kissing I honestly didn't expect that till near the season finale. One thing it showed throughout the season was Honerva/Haggars reaction to Lotor's demise in  the quintessence field or so it seemed after Haggar extracted his mech from it with the power of Oriande. At first I assumed her plan was to finish what Lotor started but instead she wanted to use the mech to find a new reality to call home so she could be with her family once more. Much like her son her intentions seemed pure though her thoughts were naive.

One element that made sense was the Paladins entering the void this time with Kieth in the fold, but I swear they reused the footage from season 5. I did suspect that the Paladins were fighting Honerva but instead it was the spirits of the original Paladins. This also gave us insight to what happened after the events of The Legend Begins and what happened to Alfor and his comrades who didn't meet their end by Zarkons hand but by Haggars. Their spirits were inside her mind and it drove them insane. However thanks to the lions they were set free. 

I certainly liked the way Kieth reacted when they saw the death of the Paladins how they were betrayed by one they called leader. I couldn't help but wonder if he was afraid it would happen to him. What took me by surprise was to see Zarkon or at least his former self and for Allura in her anger to show what horrors he committed he says the Quintessence blinded him and it was the entity in him and Honerva. It was amazing to see the new and old Paladins fight side by side and how Zarkon said that his and Kieths Galra lineage made them better leaders and the spirit to never give up. 

On other matters I couldn't help but notice how the dark entities from the rift awfully resembled the dark spirits from Legend Of Korra which once again confirms my theory of how the two are similar and the same goal of bringing balance. On a comedy note the theme park themed episode was real comedy seeing the Paladins and Shiro have some downtime to keep moral up since their defeat at Oriande I especially laughed at how Shiro had an arm wrestling match. While Kieth had to endure a kids tunnel ride which I originally thought was a tunnel of love ha hah!

In the first few episodes and near the season finale I couldn't help but feel sorry for Zarkon he probably knew that Haggar was his wife and he felt sad on the inside. It also showed us how Lotor was telling the truth in season 5 about the planet he worked with to build the Galra command ship was destroyed resulting in his exile. But I could see it was because his father had kept secrets from him his whole life. I could sympathise with Honerva too she had at last found happiness in another reality but when Lotor didn't accept her she just threw it all away and if she couldn't find happiness in the universe than she would destroy it. Even if it meant wiping out reality itself.

What really got me emotionally was Allura’s sacrifice to re create reality. She helped Honerva understand and how she tried to help Lotor and how happy he was. I was practically crying when Allura bid goodbye to her family and it hurt Lance the most but Allura would always be with him and all of them. I did think that Lance looked good with his new found Altean markings. 

The new big bang recreated reality restoring both Altea and Daibazzal. To me this season was just and poetic it started with the five of them and it ends with the five of them and Allura gave her life so that the inhabitants of the universe and other realities could live to see another sunrise. Seeing the Paladins get on with their lives such as Pidge and her family helping the new defenders of the universe, Kieth aiding the Blade of Marmora, Krolia and Kolivan becoming the new Galra diplomats, Lance spreading Allura's message across the galaxy while living a simple life on Earth and Altea, Hunk creating a line of galaxy cooks and being a good diplomat. And of course Shiro finding happiness at long last with his new Husband a member of the Atlas crew no less which is what he deserves after what he’s been through. 

However while the Paladins journey ends it seems the Lions has only just begun. 

Overall I’m going to put my hand on my heart and say this has been the best Voltron series from start to finish. Sure there were a few ups downs unexpected changes in command and miraculous revelations but through it all it has captured the true essence of an icon. This is how a Voltron series should be normally in reboots I have doubts it may not be like its predecessors or may not succeed but at the same time they maybe promising Voltron Legendary Defender is an example of a promising reboot being true to its original predecessor but also adding their own elements and giving us the opportunity to emotionally bond with the characters especially Lance, Allura, Shiro and Kieth. 

I know I’ve said this once before but Dreamworks have hit the nail on the head by bringing Voltron back into our lives and honouring his legacy. I hereby solute them in their efforts

While one story ends it seems another begins, lets hope Dreamworks do as good a job on the She-Ra reboot as they have with Voltron and hope that Netflix bring more iconic and amazing animated series and reboots to their screens.
