3. VLD NOTP?

Lotura. By the time Lotor was a developed character in VLD, I'd been through DotU, Devil's Due, and other Voltron materials. How I see Lotura is colored by how their dynamics were set up across broader Voltron lore: a leetle lottle rapey.

Now. Let's be clear. I am open to people shipping or writing about anything (oh, here's spice for the crowd that I never thought I'd admit on tumblr main: if you asked me, I'd defend RPF slash). I think that fandom communities are in boon for tackling any and all topics. Shipping does not mean you are endorsing ethical frameworks... it means you like playing with a dynamic - and that can be any dynamic... because different dynamics are interesting in fiction and can be written for a variety of effects, purposes, colors, explorations, enjoyments, reflections, and ends.

But for me, VLD!Lotura shippers overall investigated it as a sincere ship. And I get that VLD Lotura is not DotU Lotor and Allura. I get that most haven't seen DotU. And I get that people can also reimagine characters any way they want - as more messed up or less messed up or so messed up a tornado is jealous of their destruction. But it means it vibes weird to me. I can't see past Lotor's weird sexual obsessions with Allura across the spans of Voltrondom, and that's not a thing I'm personally fawning over in a ship. But that's just me, and for all people who have a good time, please keep having your good time. ^.^

4. Is there a popular pairing you don’t necessarily dislike but aren’t too invested in?

These fall under the spectrum from "dislike" to "decidedly tepid."

Any ship with Pidge and any ship with Hunk that's not Hunk x Shay. My VLD ships have concentrated around characters like Keith, Matt, Shiro, and a little bit of Lance as a byproduct. But as someone who doesn't like everyone paired off, I tend to be rigid about wanting certain enclaves to remain gloriously platonic, as platonic is the end-all best-all type of relationship to me. There's a specific type of platonic dynamic that I like writing in all my works and that type of platonic dynamic is something I don't want tampered with when I find it in media I consume. So that means we don't touch the space engineers. Pidge and Hunk work endlessly great as a BROTP and I don't want that to change. Their BROTP is so, so, so good. I also headcanon Pidge rather ace-ly, so I just don't want her in a ship.

Also, Allurance. This is again colored by broader Voltrondom. I go in, Kallura has been the deal for decades, I like Kallura, they're friggin getting married in one comic I mean come on, I am preprogrammed to not think Lance and Allura could be an item. Showrunners changing the one canon relationship that's been around from the near-beginning would be wild, amirite? And yet they did. And there's nothing wrong with it! It doesn't bother me. It's cool they explored something new and kudos. But there was nothing in broader Voltrondom to make me care about it, nor did I find Lance and Allura's relationship compelling enough in VLD proper. I get why Lance and Allura connect up in VLD and it's fine, it's perfectly fine, it's just not sparking for me.

I have talked your socks off about VLD alone so I'll end it there, but feel free to poke me again if you want me to opine on another fandom. XD Whether or not people like my takes, I'll admit it's fun to acknowledge how I feel on these ones.

Lotura: we need more of it!!!!

There's plenty of Lotura fic/art, but the reason I said we need more of it is because a) I fucking love both Lotor and Allura, and b) Lotor was done SO dirty in the series and he obviously got a bad rep because of it, so Lotura is often seen as "problematic" which I don't think is entirely fair bc these two have so much good chemistry and so much potential...... just a giant missed opportunity if you ask me

Klance: not really my thing

I hope I don't get any hate for it lol, I honestly have nothing against Klance and I think it's an okay ship but it's really not for me. I love Keith and Lance separately, but personally I can't see Keith with anyone but Shiro, sorry😔

1. Red Poppies by @icypantherwrites

Hanahaki (with a twist) AU — Lance has never experienced a case of Hanahaki this bad. He wishes he could say it’s just the amount of flowers he’s coughing up and desperately trying to hide from the team, just as he’s trying to hide the fact that he technically died at Omega Shield from them, but it’s not just that. It’s the fact he keeps choking out red poppies. And red poppies...

They symbolize death.

the most interesting take on hanahaki ive ever seen tbh. i know icy panther is known for her edgier storytelling, but this is one of my faves of hers! i like the originality of it, and of course i adore the addressing of the omega shield disaster

2. Voltron: Last Dialogue by @uncouth-peasant [IMPLIED CHARACTER DEATH]

After the events of Omega Shield, the Astral Plane has a visitor.

okay look i know everyone freaks about major character death but im asking u to read this anyway. for one its only IMPLIED, technically lance could still be alive, and also it’s just a really well-written fic. lance and shiro have so so so much potential with how similar their characters and arcs are, so i loved how this one explored that in its heartbreak

3. The Poison of Deceit by @icypantherwrites

This diplomatic mission is not going the way Lance had hoped. The diplomacy part on behalf of Voltron is going fantastic and Lance doesn’t think he’d be remiss in saying he had a large hand in that. But the whole impress Shiro bit is an epic fail as Shiro doesn’t seem to notice his efforts at all and it’s only worse with Keith showing him up at nearly every turn. The aliens they’re working on the alliance though have noticed his efforts. But as Lance stands here now, Shiro and Keith’s lives along with a vial of poison in his hands, he isn’t so certain that was a good thing.

the fuckin ‘i drank poison to save your life’ trope will NEVER get old idc idc. the heart dropping moment when the team realises that by doubting lance they may have cost him his life...insanity fr. like i eat this shit up every time

Normally this is when Lance can think of something stupid to say to make Keith smile. Bonus points if he can get a laugh. Usually it isn’t hard — smiles come easy when it’s them. But something is wrong, and Lance knows that Keith’s smile will be the farthest thing from him if he says it.

Almost immediately, the sobble beside him broke out into a pitiful howl, it's tears bringing water into the eyes of those around it.

"Lance!" Everyone cried.

Lance picked up his new pokemon and began to croon and rock it like one would a baby, trying to get it to stop crying as he walked out of the room.

"Can you believe that?" Pidge asked, as she knelt down to wipe the tears from her own Pokemon, a sprigatito.

"Wanting to ditch a pokemon the moment he gets it."

"I know," Hunk said, scooping up his new partner, "I've only had rockruff for a day and a half..."

"Don't finish that meme, Hunk," Pidge said.

Keith hadn't said anything, preferring to simply give attention to his own Houndour, but he had given Lance healthy glowers ever since he'd first looked disappointed at getting a sobble.

"I don't understand."

Allura didn't seem to be paying attention to the conversation, her gaze almost entirely on the clafairy she held up above her head.

"All of these... creatures are so wonderful!"

She turned, confusion now on her face.

"Why would Lance want to get rid of the one he got?"

Shiro had to sigh at that. It's not that he didn't think Lance meant to be hurtful, but Pokemon were a lifelong commitment, even when chosen at random.

Knowing Lance, he had probably thought he would get a gyarados or a charizard, in spite of the fact that neither of those were good for first time trainers. He was drawn from his thoughts by a nudge to his flesh hand, and looking down saw it was his own Umbreaon, a loyal little beast that he'd known since it had been an Evee, that had waited for him until his raucous return to earth, even following him aboard the blue lion and across the universe.

Who could ask for a more loyal pokemon?

"Give him some time," Shiro said, giving his pokemon a pat, "he'll come around."

If Coran could bond with a Ludicolo, then there was hope for Lance.

Whys it the festival of 'that time a girl asked you out and stood you up only for you to see her hanging out with all your friends having completely forgotten she was even gonna meet you and you gotta choke it back cause all your friends are there' thats mandatory?" And everyone's like "that was oddly specific, dude"

And sure, it becomes a potentially cruel but funny episode about whether there's anything good to come of or a purpose to heartbreak, but ultimately, it's an excuse to make anti-valentines(don't worry... all the characters get memed)

4. Great Angst Fic

The Voltron fandom has some of the best angst I've read honestly, I am not often brought to tears by fic but it's happened once or twice while reading VLD stuff. Failure to Launch by kittymills tore my heart right out when I read it, it's just so freaking sad I can't deal!! It's such a short fic but I was bawling by the end of it, it's just chef's kiss.

7. Specific Line that has stuck with you

This is from THE FRONT by @monstersinthecosmos which is another VLD fic and it's one of my favourites of all time:

“The stars are so beautiful when you’re out there,” he says softly. He looks up at the dull white paintjob. They’re way underground, deep in the Earth, but he pictures it. “You always know they’re out there, and you always know you can’t see them that well from here, and it’s still so… beautiful."

In this fic Keith is captive in a lab and is being experimented on and Shiro is trying to find a way to break him out, and this quote just really struck me in that moment like yeah sometimes you can't see the stars or might even forget they're there but they're still out there and they're beautiful and maybe that's what matters yk!!!!!

8. Specific Scene that has stuck with you

I recently caught up with @baejax-the-great 's Screwdriver, and the scene at the coffeeshop where Zagreus is trying to talk to Achilles about his boy troubles but Achilles is having none of it is hilarious:

“You ghosted Thanatos. He didn’t want you to leave him and he was not trying to find you. He moved on. It’s not the same.”

He doesn’t know that. He doesn’t know that Thanatos moved on. Zagreus didn’t see a ring on Than’s finger. He didn’t see a friendship necklace that said “BFFs forever” with a picture of some guy in it.

“It’s literally the exact same. You and Patroclus were best friends, then you weren’t speaking to each other and were separated by an ocean, and now you are hashtag relationship goals.”

“Don’t” —Achilles waves his own beringed hand in the air— “don’t talk like that.”
