The Audi R8: Origins, Generations, Specifications
All things Audi R8 on Automobile.
Audi R8 Essential History Despite a rich motorsports history with overwhelming success in both rallying and endurance racing, Audi's always remained at arm's length when it came to producing a true sports car. The once-popular Audi TT has most of the right ingredients, but the front-wheel-drive underpinnings pulled primarily from the VW Golf kept it well below the Porsche Boxster, Nissan Z cars, and BMW's assorted roadsters and two-seat coupes.
Since the early 1980s, Audi remained content developing high-performance versions of its premium coupes and sedans, focusing on promoting all-wheel drive technology and turbocharged engines, even if the resulting speed-specials were softer and more road-oriented than the adrenalin-charging weapons from Mercedes-Benz' AMG or BMW's M division.
It was only during the early-2000s when the reality of an Audi supercar began to coalesce, born from Audi's ongoing Le Mans domination and the then-recent acquisition of Lamborghini by the Volkswagen Auto Group. To amortize the cost of development of the nascent Lamborghini Gallardo and to bring Audi a little closer in-line with Mercedes and BMW, the plan for the mid-engine Audi R8—the brand's first supercar—took shape with the Le Mans Quattro concept in 2003.
Audi Le Mans Quattro Concept Visually, the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept was nearly identical to the production R8 that arrived in 2007, though the wild twin-turbo V-10 engine was tossed for a more production-friendly iteration of Audi's naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V-8. Power was reasonable for a mid-engine sports car of the era, with 414 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque sent to all-four wheels through either Audi's R-Tronic six-speed automated manual or a gated six-speed manual transmission. Zero-to-60-mph times for these early R8s were around the low four-second mark, with a top speed around 188 mph.
The Audi R8 Goes V-10 For the 2009 model year, the R8's Lamborghini roots shone in full-force, when the updated 5.2-liter V-10 from the Lamborghini LP560-4 was shoehorned into the R8. Fun fact—that Lamborghini V-10 is actually an Audi V-10 pulled from the S6 and S8. So, the R8 V10 actually uses an Audi V-10 pulled from a Lamborghini, but we digress. The V-10 engine increased the R8's output to 518 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque, dropping the zero-to-60 mph sprint to 3.9 seconds, and raising top speed to 196 mph.
The Audi R8 Spyder Drop-top Spyder variants launched for both the V-8 and the V-10 models, with the V-8 adding an extra 14 horsepower over the V-8 coupe, growing the total to 428 horsepower, though torque remained unchanged at 317 lb-ft. The limited edition R8 GT arrived in 2011, cutting 220 pounds from the curb weight of the regular R8 V10, while increasing the V-10's output to 552 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. As you'd expect, the R8 GT also brought with it a range of suspension, braking, and aerodynamic upgrades over the regular car to compensate for the additional power and to enlarge the overall performance envelope. Production of the GT was limited to 333 units worldwide, with an additional 333 unit run of the corresponding R8 GT Spyder.
The first-generation R8 received a mid-cycle refresh for 2012 in the rest of the world, arriving in the U.S. in 2013 as a 2014 model year. The refresh brought mostly aesthetic updates, though a few significant mechanical upgrades were also brought to the R8, most significantly a new seven-speed dual-clutch replacing the balky R-Tronic automated manual transmission. Standard magnetic damping was also added for the R8 V10, an optional upgrade for the V-8 models.
The R8 V10 Plus arrived on our shores in 2014, adding a new range-topping trim with extra power and performance in the same vein as the older R8 GT. The same 5.2-liter V-10 as found in the standard R8 V10 was upgraded to 542 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque in the R8 V10 Plus, which also got a re-tuned suspension, updated interior, and massaged aesthetics.
Second-Generation Audi R8 After these short-lived upgrades, the first-gen R8 was replaced by an all-new model in 2015 for the 2016 model year. In keeping with the Lamborghini bones of the prior generation, the second-gen R8 shares much of its structural DNA with the Lamborghini Huracan. This includes the familiar 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V-10—the only engine offered at the moment—initially available with either 533 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque in the base R8 coupe or 602 horsepower and 413 lb-ft in the R8 V10 Plus coupe. With the exception of the limited-edition R8 RWS (Rear Wheel Series), power is transferred to all-four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
For 2019, the second-gen R8 was updated with extra power and an aesthetic refresh. Power for the base coupe jumped to 562 horsepower and 413 lb-ft, while the newly renamed R8 Coupe Performance Quattro packs 602 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. Performance for all iterations of the second-gen R8 is impressive; factory-quoted zero-to-60 mph times range between 3.2 seconds and 3.5 seconds, though these times have proven to be conservative in independent tests.
Audi R8 Highlights Time will likely be kind to the Audi R8. The first generation of the supercar consistently ranks at the top of many enthusiast's lists of best designs of the 2000s, and it's only going to get better with time. Although older R8s may carry a bit of a stigma as simply a used supercar, give it time—or pick one up now, while they are at the bottom of their depreciation curve.
Once the first R8s are out of the too-new-to-be-classic but too-old-to-be-cool dead zone, the R8 will be one of the better ways to get into something genuinely exotic for not much more than the price of entry to a loaded mid-size crossover SUV. Early V-8s are particularly inexpensive to purchase, and compared to a Ferrari or Lamborghini of similar vintage, significantly less expensive to keep on the road. As far as upkeep price goes, think more than a BMW or Audi sedan, and less than an Aston Martin—maintenance on a regular Porsche 911 is likely a good comparison.
By design, the R8 of any generation is a more professional, lower-key supercar—if that's even a thing. The current R8 is priced closer to the Porsche 911 Turbo, current Acura NSX, and Aston Martin Vantage than to Lamborghini's Huracán or McLaren's 720s, but in our experience, the R8 doesn't fall far short of those more exotic models in performance or theater. In fact, we'd likely take a new R8 over any of the listed alternatives on the strength of its sound and the vicious launch control. We've also heard whispers that a first-gen Audi R8 V10 with the gated manual transmission is one of the best "exotic" experiences that can be had for less than $100,000, so there's that.
Audi R8 Buying Tips Audi R8s of any generation or spec are fairly robust and shouldn't provide too many undue surprises mechanically. A thick sheaf of maintenance records is always a welcome inclusion with any potential purchase, as is a pre-purchase inspection at a local specialist or dealer. Parts availability for the R8 is high, considering even the oldest R8s still have factory support from Audi—for now. As stated above, expect regular maintenance bills similar to what you'd expect of a Porsche 911.
If you are in the market for a first-gen R8, we highly suggest you seek only those with either the six-speed manual transmission or the later dual-clutch examples. Avoid the R-Tronic at all costs; it's clunky, slow, relatively fragile, and for some enthusiasts, ruins the overall experience. Engine type matters, too, as V-8s will obviously be more affordable than the V-10s, but there is a significant difference in both speed and upkeep between the two engines—as well as a difference in prestige, which can enhance (or detract from) collectibility.
Audi R8 Auctions Despite undeniable desirability, the Audi R8 isn't collectible enough to cross the stage at major auction houses—yet. Bring a Trailer never disappoints, as the healthy record of sold R8s is enough to give an idea of what you might pay for a first generation. For second-generation R8s—the current model—there are enough on Audi lots that you might be better off getting one straight from the source.

Longest-Range Electric Cars of 2020: 19 EVs That Can Go the Distance
2020 is a huge year for electric cars. It’s the year we’ll see pioneering electric vehicles from Porsche, Tesla, Volkswagen, and other automakers, including players that are brand new to the industry. And if you’re looking for a long-range EV today, there are plenty of options already on the market. Keep reading to learn more about the longest-range electric cars for 2020, including vehicles that are already on sale as well as those coming to market very soon.
2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge: at least 200-mile range (estimate)

Volvo is making an electric version of its funky-looking XC40 crossover. A 78-kW-hr battery pack sits between an electric motor on each axle, helping the crossover produce 408 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque, which will make it quite a bit more potent than the standard XC40. Expect it to offer a bit more than 200 miles of all-electric driving range.
Volkswagen ID 4: at least 200-mile range (estimate)
Coming in 2020
We’re missing out on Volkswagen’s ID 3 electric hatchback that’s been revealed in Europe, but that’s OK because we get something even better. The ID 4 small electric crossover will feature a larger battery pack and more electric range than the hatch—we’re expecting at least 200 miles. If the production version is anything like the ID Crozz concept, the crossover will feature a compelling interior and exterior design. The concept also boasts an 83-kW-hr lithium-ion battery pack stored beneath the cabin floor for a balanced weight distribution, which VW says will give the CUV handling characteristics similar to those of the Golf GTI.
2020 Mercedes EQC: 200–220-mile range (estimate)

This crossover doesn’t look like a Mercedes until you open the doors and see the luxurious interior with a wide touchscreen, sumptuous seats, and bold ambient lighting. Under the sheetmetal, the front and rear electric motors work together with the 80-kW-hr battery to make 402 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque. We expect the EQC to deliver more than 200 miles of range.
2020 Porsche Taycan: 201–250-mile range (estimate)
The Taycan has generated lots of buzz recently, and for a good reason. In a recent review, we noted the Taycan reminds us of the 911 in terms of its ability to make you feel “one” with the car. It’s powerful, too. The Taycan Turbo S packs 751 hp and 774 lb-ft of torque in overboost mode and 617 hp in normal driving. This is possible with the help of a 93-kW-hr battery running at 800 volts. Although it’s positioned as a Tesla Model S fighter, the Taycan can’t compete on range—at least not in Turbo trim. The EPA rated the 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo’s range at 201 miles, though it has yet to release range ratings for the Turbo S and 4S models. Expect to pay a pretty penny for upper-trim Taycans; the Turbo S starts at $186,350.
BMW iX3: 210–240-mile range (estimate)

BMW is preparing its first EV crossover. The electric X3 will launch in 2020, though we don’t know the exact timing for the U.S. market. EPA-estimated range is also unclear at this point, but we expect it to come in above 200 miles. The automaker is looking to add a dozen all-electric vehicles to its lineup by 2025.
2019 Audi E-Tron: 204-mile range

Unfortunately, the highly anticipated Audi E-Tron doesn’t boast the impressive all-electric driving range of the Tesla Model X. Nevertheless, it’s a superbly built SUV that benefits from a crisp brake feel, seamless energy recuperation, and a quiet and luxurious interior. It’s relatively powerful, too. Together, the front and rear electric motors produce 355 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque; a boost mode raises total output to 402 hp and 489 lb-ft for brief spurts in this 5,489-pound SUV. Its large battery pack is rated at 95 kW-hr. Prices start at $75,795.
2019 Nissan Leaf Plus: 226-mile range

Nissan is now offering the popular Leaf with a bigger 62-kW-hr battery pack. This option increases all-electric driving range to a maximum of 226 miles. Dubbed the Nissan Leaf Plus, this new version accelerates quickly and shields occupants from road noise, though it suffers from some unnatural brake feel and dull steering. Priced from $37,475 before incentives, this electric car with long range is both competent and affordable.
2020 Jaguar I-Pace: 234-mile range

Not only is the I-Pace one of the longest-range electric cars on the market, but it’s also one of the quickest. It makes 394 hp and 512 lb-ft of torque, enough to take it to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds. This setup pairs with a 90-kW-hr battery pack on all versions. We love this crossover’s scintillating styling, precise steering, and excellent body control. And it performs well off-road, tackling sand pits and dirt hills with its competent all-wheel-drive system.
2019 Kia Niro EV: 239-mile range

This electric car with long range has a similar setup to the upcoming Soul EV due for 2021. Like the box car, the Niro EV has a 64-kW-hr lithium-ion battery and electric motor that makes 201 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque. In a recent review, we praised the Niro EV’s handling and readily available power. The model is priced from $39,545 before credits.
2020 Hyundai Kona Electric: 258-mile range

The Hyundai Kona Electric exhibits a silky-smooth drive quality that belies its sub-$40,000 price tag. The model’s electric powertrain makes 201 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque, propelling it to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds with the help of a 64-kW-hr battery. OK, so it’s not particularly zippy, but it’s much quicker than gas-powered versions of the Kona.
2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV: 259-mile range

By updating the battery from a 60-kW-hr unit to 66 kW-hr, Chevrolet increased the Bolt’s range by 21 miles for the 2020 model year. Now the little hatch can travel an estimated 259 miles on a single charge. Like previous iterations, the Bolt packs a front-wheel-drive powertrain with 200 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. The 2020 Chevrolet Bolt is priced at $37,495 before incentives.
2020 Polestar 2: 275-mile range

The Volvo-owned Polestar brand is aiming at the Tesla Model 3 with this new model. With a 78-kW-hr battery and a targeted range of 275 miles, the sleek Polestar 2 has front and rear electric motors that deliver a combined output of 400 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque. That should be enough to scoot it to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. Inside the cabin, you’ll find unmistakable Volvo design cues, including the large Sensus screen in the middle of the dashboard. Launch models will start at around $63,000.
2020 Tesla Model Y: 300-mile range

The Tesla Model Y compact crossover is expected to be a top-seller for the brand. It will seat five or seven passengers, depending on the configuration chosen. The Long Range version, expected to be priced from $48,200, will offer a solid 300 miles of range, while other models will offer less range. The Model Y Performance is estimated to hit 60 mph in as little as 3.5 seconds.
2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E: 210–300-mile range (estimate)

Ford recently revealed its all-electric SUV with Mustang styling cues, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E. The controversially named EV will have an all-electric driving range of up to 300 miles, depending on trim level, when it arrives in 2020. It’s one of a slew of new EVs coming from Ford; look for an all-electric F-150 in a few years.

Although Tesla went through “production hell” with the Model 3, the effort was well worth it. It’s agile and powerful, with the Long Range version hitting 60 mph in 4.0 seconds and the Performance version proving even quicker. The Model 3 sedan won our recent comparison test against the Genesis G70 and the BMW 330i. Impressed? A Long Range Model 3 costs $49,690 before incentives.
2020 Tesla Model X Long Range: 328-mile range

You probably recognize this long-range EV for its falcon wing doors. This sizable SUV puts many sports cars to shame when it comes to performance. We tested a 2016 Tesla Model X P90D Ludicrous hitting 60 mph in 3.2 seconds with the help of a 259-hp electric motor spinning the front wheels and a 503-hp electric motor for the rears. The Model X Long Range is currently priced from $86,190 before incentives.
2020 Tesla Model S Long Range: 373-mile range

The Tesla Model S is the longest range electric car on the market as of this writing. Its 373-mile rating holds up in the real world, as we found out when we made the journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles on one charge in the Model S. Yep, we went 360 miles without recharging. Although Tesla changes its prices frequently, the Long Range Model S currently starts at $81,190 before incentives.
2020 Rivian R1T: 400-plus-mile range

Watch out, Tesla. Rivian is gearing up to produce a sleek all-electric truck that can hit 60 mph in as little as 3.0 seconds. Depending on the battery option chosen, the R1T can travel 230 to 400-plus miles on a single charge, with prices starting in the high $60,000 range for the cheapest 105-kW-hr model. Each wheel has its own 197-hp electric motor, allowing precise torque vectoring at each wheel for increased traction. On the downside, Rivian has shown the R1T having a short bed that’s just 4.6 feet long and 4.5 feet wide, and towing the max 11,000 pounds will cut the truck’s all-electric driving range in half.

Elon Musk has made plenty of wild promises in the past, but as we’ve found with the insanely quick Model S Performance, we know Tesla is capable of breaking performance barriers. So we’re hoping that the reimagined Tesla Roadster is all it’s cracked up to be. Tesla says the Roadster will boast a 0–60 time of 1.9 seconds, which actually sounds plausible given that we’ve tested a Model S hitting 60 mph in 2.28 seconds. Tesla is also boldly claiming the Roadster will have a 200-kW-hr battery, 7,376 lb-ft of torque, and an all-electric driving range of 620 miles. A claim that’s more difficult to believe, considering Tesla’s history of delays, is that the sleek two-door will arrive by 2020. Founders Series models, limited to the first 1,000 customers, are priced at a whopping $250,000. We’ll have to wait and see if Tesla can stick to its timeline with the Roadster, but color us excited.

Whether it’s a sedan or a truck, finding a used vehicle with strong resale value is key. We looked at 2015-18 models and found 10 vehicles to consider. Sedan/Hatchback The Mazda3 has competitive value retention, which helped it earn the #1 spot for the compact sedan/hatchback category in the 2019 Best Used Car Awards. In fact, reviewers gave the 2015 and 2017 models high marks for Cost-Effectiveness. And another benefit: 2014-18 Mazda3s have few recalls, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Toyota Corolla is another great option if you’re looking for a sedan that can hold its value. It took the top spot for used compact sedans for the 2018 Best Used Car Awards. The 2012-18 models were able to hold their value nearly 29% better than competitors. The reviewers were big fans of the 2016 model, giving it a 9/10 for Cost-Effectiveness, noting that it’s one of the most affordable cars in its class. If you’re looking for a midsize crossover that offers a manual option, can go off-road, and can also stand out in the sea of competitors, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has you covered. The 2007-17 Wrangler Unlimited rose from second place to first for the 2018 Best Used Car Awards, and it maintained its status for the 2019 awards. NHTSA has issued only two recalls for the 2015 model. Need something that feels more at home on the highway? Look to the compact Honda CR-V. When the redesigned 2017 model came out, our reviewer wrote, “This is a vehicle of substance and unconventional beauty, and you should buy one. Case closed.” Not only did the CR-V score well for our reviewer on Cost-Effectiveness, but it also scored a 9/10 for Form & Function, thanks in part to having plenty of cargo space. The fourth-generation Ford Expedition, a full-size SUV, introduced a few new changes, including an updated interior and sleek updated look. The 2018 model earned the #1 spot for value, rising from the #4 spot the previous year. The reviewers also gave it a 10/10 for both Performance and Form & Function. While NHTSA gave the 2018 Expedition a 5-star overall rating, it did find a handful of recalls related to the powertrain and fuel system. The Chevrolet Traverse is another great choice. It can hold up to eight passengers and still have plenty of room for cargo, making it a car that can grow with your family. It was one of the top 3 choices for the 2018 Best Used Car Awards and took the #1 spot for value for 2017 models, according to the user rankings, earning a 9.4/10. The data shows that the Toyota Tacoma, a midsize truck, can retain up to 66% of its original value 12 years after purchase. Since the 2015 model was the last before a major redesign, it’s no surprise that reviewers gave the 2015 Tacoma an 8/10 rating for Cost-Effectiveness, a boost from the 2013 model. The Tacoma also took first place for midsize trucks for the 2019 Best Used Car Awards. NHTSA reports just four recalls on the 2015 Tacoma. The Nissan Titan is another option. It’s no secret why so many shoppers love Subaru, particularly the Outback. It maintains high resale value, making it the winner for the wagon category for the 2019 Best Used Car Awards. The 2016 model gets a 9/10 for Cost-Effectiveness and an 8/10 for Performance. Want a slightly newer Outback? The 2018 maintains its 9/10 score for Cost-Effectiveness. NHTSA issued three recalls for the 2016 Outback. For a sportier option, turn your sights toward the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen. The 2015-18 SportWagen takes the #2 slot for the 2019 Best Used Car Awards, and reviewers noted that “no better blend of practicality, cargo space, and road-going manners exists on the market today” than the 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen.
