Old commercial for Port Witch, Tasmania.

I found this a few months ago on an old hard drive of VHS tapes that I’d had converted to digital video and thought it was interesting.

This commercial, along with several others, was originally produced by the Australian Board of Occult Tourism in 2000/2001, in an attempt to drive up tourism numbers to the Tasmanian coastline. The rest of these advertisements unfortunately seem to be lost media, so I really am lucky to have found this one!

Tasmania was seeing a dip in interest from tourists in the late 90’s, which prompted the Australian Government to invest in a new advertising campaign to help remedy the issue. They focused specifically on a handful of small sea faring towns which they thought had a lot of potential to drawn in people, one of which was Port Witch.

You would struggle to imagine this now considering the popularity of Port Witch as a tourist destination nowadays, but it was previously a relatively unknown place.

Before the campaign launched, the general perception of Port Witch was that of an industrial Port. It was previously known of, mostly by local witches, as a place to go for medicinal treatment or to purchase apothecary supplies.

The campaign succeeded in putting Port Witch on the map, and it became a tourist hub as well as a trading hub. It is now well known globally as the only place where you can go to fly on an oar, and it also boasts one of the largest witch populations outside of Canberra.

This appears to be the later version of the commercial too, which was aired in the following years (I’m guessing 2002-2003), including an additional disclaimer at the end. This was implemented following to several cases where disgruntled tourists tried to sue the government following airborn oar accidents.

You might say that hitting subscribe on a fic that hasn't updated in four years from someone who apparently changed fandoms is a fruitless and delusional endeavor, but I have been waiting for The Winds Of Winter for thirteen years now, my faith in the human spirit is indestructible
