clover and junpei's friendship is one of the most underrated things in zero escape imo, despite being absolutely pivotal in 999 and really heavily hinted at in vlr

clover trusts that junpei would never kill snake, and when junpei says "we can trust akane, too. i know her" she believes him. clover wants to trust somebody. her grief can drive her to terrible things, but that's also only when no one reaches out to her, when no one shows her she can rely on them. something really consistent about clover throughout both games she's in is her tendency to cling to the people she knows she can trust: light, alice, junpei

she can keep it together through a lot of things if she just knows she can believe in someone. just one person is enough. and SO much of the time, that one person is junpei! them reaching out to each other is so good! fuck!

What I think realistically: I don’t think my man ever really had friends other than Akane like I’d say he was a loner who maybe had some acquaintances but never really any friends and that’s why he’s both so obsessed with his relationship with Akane and also why he didn’t keep in touch with the 999 gang cuz he just didn’t know what to do, how to open himself up to that kinda thing again or really how to interact with people in a genuine way

What I think is hilarious: after 999 he threw away his Marty mcfly clothes and looked at his right hand in a komaeda fashion and exclaimed “IM EMO NOW” and went into hot topic and asked for clothes that were as black as his soul because it’s really important that people know he is ✨depressed✨ and then he went to the liquor store and asked for BEER ALCOHOLIC BEEERRR 🙀 and took half a sip and became instantly plastered and died

What is heartbreaking and awful but fun to inflict on friends: going off of the first one, I think adopting Quark really was just the best part of Junpeis life like he definitely struggled a lot (my man literally left a baby in the back of a truck like what the fuck dude 😵‍💫) and that’s because he has no clue how to interact with people or take care of anything because he’s been a total recluse for decades but Quark is a baby baby and Junpei loves him so much like he finally feels fulfilled and so I think that’s what gives him the courage in the vlr epilogue to be like “you know what? Fuck Akane” and finally realize just how much she’s changed and how different they are now and like I gotta imagine he feels like complete shit cuz he literally put himself and Quark in extreme danger just to see Akane again and not only was it just not worth it, they now have the knowledge they were just being used for a shitty experiment and they have new trauma yay. And Junpei hearing all about how this is the bad timeline that doesn’t matter so it should be erased to make way for the Good timeline, that would just be a kick to the face because without this timeline he wouldn’t have Quark and the idea of their relationship being seen as completely useless and that Junpei would have been better off if none of it had ever happened, ooooh that pisses him off. So yeah just like, Junpei needs Quark man don’t take him away 🥺

What would never work with canon but the canon is shit so I believe it anyway: well since ztd is ass and did everyone dirty I think it’d be cool if in the magical ideal timeline where everything is good I’d say a) Quark needs to be there somehow GET MY BOY IN THE TRANSPORTER THE STUPID TRANSPORTER b) Junpei needs to be in contact with the 999 gang like maybe he gains some sorta morphogenetic knowledge of his life in vlr and how he pushes everyone away in pursuit of Akane and he’s like “oh shit I need to get my shit together” and he has to make 😩Effort to make and maintain friendships for his stupid mental health lol and c) as much as I love the idea of Junepei happening and both of them being really miserable in that relationship, this is the happy timeline where things go right so yeah them being married has gotta go lol they really just should not be together, at most they can be like colleagues or something but I’d imagine it’d be kinda awkward as fuck lol

Of course! I actually really love this ship a whole lot! Spoilers for VLR.

•Dio and Luna are the ultimate misfit couple, with Dio being a clone and Luna being a robot. Even their personalities are quite different.

•The first time Dio saw her, he thought she was immensely beautiful.

•When he had gone through the yellow door with Luna and Quark, he refused to let Quark betray her. He couldn’t betray such a beautiful woman, especially one that reminded him of happiness and serenity.

•After escaping from Rhizome 9 (which was hard because he was handcuffed to a sink), he struggled with his feelings.

•He wasn’t supposed to be having these feelings! It would prevent him from achieving his goal of being a saint.

•However, after thinking for a bit, he realizes that he had ultimately failed at his goals at Rhizome 9. He was supposed to make the experiment fail but he hadn’t managed to do it.

•Brother was going to be so mad at him.

•Realizing that he didn’t want that, Dio decided that he would not be going back. He wouldn’t face brother.

•And he still had that crush on Luna.

•So after the nonary game, he looks for Luna. While she does seem mad at him first, he explains his reasoning to her.

•And Luna realizes that she is taking pity on his poor soul.

•She is able to look past everything and she sees that the man in front of her has dealt with years and years of indoctrination and his way of thinking has been altered.

•She tries to understand him and help him see the world like someone who hasn’t faced indoctrination his entire life.

•Dio still has a crush on her.

•The two of them quickly become friends and stay close for a few months after the nonary game.

•Eventually, Dio gets tipsy one night and asks Luna out, mostly as a joke, because he is so convinced that she will reject him.

•However, she doesn’t reject him and she accepts his offer to go out on a date. Dio tells her that he didn’t expect her to say yes to his question and that’s why he got drunk.

•The two of them end up becoming the perfect couple. They never fight (mostly because Luna doesn’t like causing conflict) and when they do fight, they make up really quickly.

•Dio cares about her a lot and they end up falling in love and getting married really quickly. Brother doesn’t come, however Tenmyouji, Sigma, and Phi come to the wedding. Dio has managed to become friends with all of them and it’s the happiest he has ever been.

•He realizes that true happiness is achieved through friendship as opposed to meeting the demands of other people.

•Eventually him and Luna adopt a kid together and he is the best Dad you could ever have.

i rewatched tenmyouji’s ending again today and i swear to god quark means SO MUCH to junpei and that makes me so fucking sad like imagine the only beautiful thing you’ve ever had in your life is an orphan baby you’ve found in the streets and you are that desperate to keep it safe and alive -and with you- that you even risk your life. imagine having lost EVERYTHING you held dear and suddenly there’s this little ray of hope waiting for you…. which actually shows you what a family is and how love works, they way you give and receive love back. in a world where there’s no place for hope, this tiny baby teaches you to keep on living, to fight, to believe in something, to want to protect another life. he gave junpei a real purpose (of course he was looking for akane, but that purpose is too far away. what was the probability of finding her? and alive?) for staying alive. quoting the game itself tenmyouji never regretted adopting quark because “He told me that he was looking for a really important lady, and because of that he’d had to give up on pretty much everything else in his life. But when he took me and started raising me, he felt like he’d gotten some of what he lost back.”

like man. this tiny, weeping baby who junpei thought that wouldn’t even make it gave him hope, love, faith and luck. the fact that junpei believed quark gave him back things he HAD to give up so he could keep on looking for akane... junpei had to give up on love, on friendship, on anything that could get in the way. he had to become this cynical man whose only reason to be was to find akane. for this he had to be absolutely alone, and he was for years until he met quark. he gave him a family. he gave him hope. he gave him a purpose. he gave him humanity back. quark saved junpei in every way he couldn’t even imagine, so it’s no surprise junpei risked his life to save him. quark was someone important to him and he couldn’t lose him too, not after having lost akane for at least two times in front of his eyes. junpei was too afraid to love someone again because he was scared to lose them again, but quark show him he could love and be loved. junpei felt love for the first time in years. he would deal with being a father somehow

so, carlos kills delta. i’m actually a little pleasantly surprised that most of the fandom headcanons this for him— i do, of course, but with a ‘nice’ character like carlos you often expect people to insist they’re not one for violence. but yeah it’s in large part pantry fragment that makes me so certain he’d do it— carlos kills akane bc akane is dangerous, and carlos even kills himself when he thinks he’s dangerous. he’d feel guilty just by the sheer fact of taking a life when all he’s done his entire life is save people, but violence is on the table as a last resort and they cant afford to have delta alive, so he’d take that burden of guilt so as to spare everyone else

i don’t have many in depth hcs for how the gang leaves dcom so i figured akane psychic calling aoi for a ride made some amount of sense. aois yelling at junpei and phi to buckle up. akane already is like a good girl.

mira’s in jail catching up on philosophy reading, eric’s in therapy thankfully. imo the... Magical Change mira has in the epilogue files is a bit... of a jarring change of heart as far as realism goes so i feel like given her circumstances she’d probably have psychotherapy as well

sigma has tons of robotics experience, so... he builds sean a head so he can operate in society a bit easier. i had bree’s sean design in the back of my mind so i wanted to give credit there.

i figure there’s some point where junpei and akane are working on crash keys business w catching the terrorist but carlos has to stay behind to rehabilitate maria; so junpei and akane on a business trip to japan, finding a few spare hours to call carlos despite the timezone difference... the epilogue shows that they haven’t really been in much contact, so i feel like it’s probably a result of carlos not being used to having deep longstanding friendships. he doesn’t want to bother junpei and akane when they’re busy with crash keys business and their relationship, meanwhile they’re like Carlos Hasn’t Called Us In Weeks Is He Dead Or What

also that panel has a beer in the back because i feel like it’d take a while for everyone around junpei to realize that his alcoholism is like, Alcoholism, and then even longer for him to get a handle on it

the second panel is the moment maria wakes up after carlos spending half his life trying to get her back... cries......................

and then Junepei Is Beautiful And Dysfunctional: A Dissertation. they love each other of course but junpei’s severely traumatized by akane’s actions and akane has trouble adjusting to normal life especially with all of that being brought to the surface again; she doesnt know how to process guilt or help junpei, she cant even tell him she was wrong to apologize bc she doesnt think she was, she just regrets that he had to be caught up in it. anyway not directly related but i hc that they break up once it gets too much to handle then go back for another try after they fix some things. they’re a mess but they dont care that they’re a mess because they’re so hellbent on being together because having each other is a sign of victory and safety and theyll learn to exist together eventually

... again, just general post-ztd, but junpei would be resistant to any kind of medication/therapy for his struggles but i feel like if people he loved expressed their concern enough he could be convinced

sigma’s panel is a reversal of the end of vlr; instead of being young and discovering his old reflection, he’s old and looking at his younger self, realizing he’ll be in this mismatched body forever, for better or for worse

diana’s panel is ambiguous about if she’s moving out of her old home or into a new one, but either way, it’s a positive change for her, finally escaping the looming threat of her ex husband and building new friendships to help her through it

and phi’s was a little hard to get across, but she’s calling her foster parents. one of them is a different phi clone, after all, and they Knew— so phi wants answers, and she wants to tell them she found her biological parents, and she wants to tell clone mom she found HER biological parents too. ... also i want her college dorm, it’s so aesthetic

of course, sean busts mira out of jail and they go back to Fix the timeline... i was thinking abt using these panels for something else but i figured they fit too well to ignore. that epilogue is a beautiful mess. let me tell you though, itd immediately turn akane from super accomplished in the last panel to Furious; i feel like crash keys & the SOIS would unite for the taking down free the soul/the terrorist efforts, and in doing so would also give mira legal help/resources in exchange for information about delta etc, but they all know mira’s kind of a wildcard and they’re happy to have her in jail, especially for akane who’s quickly come to discover that mira was a contributor to her parents’ deaths. so mira escaping is like WHO LET THIS HAPPEN

Okay just to explain this more now because big things happen below and I don’t want to wall-of-text too much, I.... just don’t think it’s a coincidence that this room just was discovered so conveniently. I mean, yeah, it’s in Kaito’s lab, but it just. You know. Appeared right now. And Tsumugi ‘found’ it. Tsumugi found it conveniently because holes were blown into it. Here’s my question.

Why was she in the position to find this room?

No, seriously. Kaito’s lab is so far out of the way of everything. It’s in an isolated area at the top of the building with a long spiraling staircase that spans what, six floors? And the holes blown into it came from above and through the lab.... and nowhere else. It’s not connected to any part of the building - there are no convenient K1-b0-created holes connecting it to the rest of the floor it’s on. Tsumugi had to have come here, specifically to Kaito’s lab, for the sake of investigation, when there are so many other areas of the school to look and there is no reason to find anything in Kaito’s lab, or Kaito, suspicious, especially in the face of him actively going against the mastermind. Why? Why other than the stuff that’s about to come up below, and for the sake of triggering that flashback?

Because here’s the thing - the moment we stepped in this room we got the flashback! The moment we got in here! All the other flashbacks happened randomly while we were investigating things, right? N-Not that anyone is obligated to stick to them, and it’s more of a guideline than a rule and good stories can break them or skirt around them (I do enjoy how Chapter 1 played with the “The detective himself must not commit the crime.” rule because while Kaede was technically acting as the reader stand-in/’detective’, we in fact had an actual detective... damn, maybe that should have been our first hint), but there’s a reason these are held in somewhat high regard. 8′D

I mean, even Shuichi is saying it - this is the first time he’s heard of Kaede having a twin. And yeah, we didn’t know about Junko and Mukuro being twins, but we did get hints of something being off (not looking like the magazines, Mukuro deflecting by saying it was just photoshopped, the 16th empty chair) early on.... and I can’t think of anything like that here. Like, at all. I’m going to continue these thoughts at the end, I think ~

Again I want to reiterate how happy I am that Maki chose to be the one to look through Kokichi’s things. It’s both a sign of distrust and trust - she believes Kokichi hid a lot from everyone, and also that he may have left more clues to help them. He would be proud. 8′) It’s small, but I’d like to think of it as a way to pay penance; I’m sure she hates doing it.

To recap what we learned:

Kaito had a hidden room in his lab that he presumably didn’t know about

Tsumugi found it by ‘accident’

Entering the room triggered the flashback light, which showed everyone met here for the first time

In the room is the participant list that says Kaede has a twin which just so happens to line up with Junko’s situation

Anyway, tl;dr: I don’t believe Kaede has a twin.

The last room we went to ended with Shuichi thinking, “what is the truth and what are lies?” so I’m building off of that and my previous theory about Tsumugi not finding this place by accident and purposefully bringing Shuichi here to trigger that flashback. I’m not 100% sure why - maybe to bring Kaede back into focus, only to gut-punch him with the ‘twin sister’ bomb? Maybe this will be the start of her creating a ‘new truth’? Possibly? It would very much match the theme of the game. But anyway, the point is I just don’t believe Tsumugi ~stumbled~ across the room and just so happened to find this participant list/profiles that immediately makes Kaede look suspicious when we hadn’t had a single hint of that the entire game.

I.... wonder. If Tsumugi... is the mastermind.... is she trying to set up Kaede as the mastermind? Or this (probably fictional) ‘twin sister’ of hers? I guess there are ways to swing that too to relate to why Kaede killed Rantaro in Chapter 1 - “she was trying to protect her twin sister, the real mastermind, so she killed Rantaro who was drawing too close to the truth” or something.

Wanting revenge on FTS, an organization responsible for the Nonary Project, he doesn’t hesitate to join the fight to stop them from hurting more people. After months of training he’s been sent to his first mission as a spy, to infiltrate their HQ facility, but it turns out to be a trap. Being caught, he’s forced to watch Alice’s father's death as a warning for the agents. Scared for his life, Ted’s been rescued by Alice, whom he starts to see as his hero and a role model. Having the same goal, understanding their traumas and being on the same wavelength with similar passions they quickly become friends… and something more for him. Secretly in love with Alice, but knowing he’s hetero, he keeps himself at a distance, to not make him uncomfortable and not ruin their friendship. Suffering from unrequited love and adoring him just from afar. Still he tries his best to be seen by him as a skilful and useful agent and partner and not just as a kid and rookie, especially after his previous failures, feeling guilty of Alice's father's death. 1 - the character everyone gets wrong

i'm deadly serious when i say i've never seen a diehard klavier fan who grasped his character as written in canon. his black-and-white sense of morality makes him SO disloyal and unintentionally leads to him having a lot of interesting flaws wrt how he perceives guilt and innocence, esp in situations like turnabout serenade. the game doesn't really go anywhere with it tho which i think is why people miss it. but i think it's a really underexplored character flaw of his and honestly a lot more interesting than "lonely because he's famous" lol

it's not that people are wrong about clover per se, but i feel it's pretty rare that she's given the same depth afforded a lot of other characters, despite the fact that she - along with her friendship with junpei - is like, the pivotal difference between a lot of the ends. clover figuring things out kind of changes the whole course of the game and i feel like she tends to be portrayed as either straightforwardly bubbly or, you know, axe end. which i feel does her a disservice as a genuinely kind, somewhat timid person who's terrified and in a desperate situation. i think her tendency in both games she's in to cling to and try to follow along with the one person she knows says a lot about her as a person

18 - it’s absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on…

apollo and ema have like the funniest workplace dynamic and the game does quite a bit to insinuate that they're friends by the end of aa4 and i like. never see content about this because it doesn't fit neatly into either "ship" or "siblings." like they're work besties this is such an essential type of relationship to have in your 20s and YET all the good work besties dynamics like this are SLEPT ON!!!! sorry i will take every opportunity i can get my hands on to spread this propaganda

for ze, the profound tragedy of alice's character and how much she was fucked over by vlr's nonary game in particular. everything that she lost and was taken from her and she got like.....no say at all in the retribution or the fight against that. alice is a character who's been through so much but i feel like she's rarely discussed in any actual depth. similarly to clover actually lol. but i feel like she's even less deeply explored in favor of the Cool Spy Girl angle which is such a shame because i feel like her story in particular fits in with a lot of the themes of vlr as like, how much akane has changed and how much she's willing to fuck over people in situations a lot like she once was in, as long as it's for the greater good

22 - your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores

i think...it's less that people ignore them, but i think a lot of the "other" endings in zero escape are really interesting in terms of their implications after the credits roll. one thing i think about a lot is how akane escaped in a hope of two end but didn't come back for diana and sigma. and radical-6 never got out in that timeline, so akane technically achieved her goal, but she wouldn't even be able to be sure of that until that april. what was that like for her, to leave that place the sole survivor and wonder if this was really the best timeline? things like that really plague me but i don't see too much direct discussion of it

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): C-Team, P-Phi/Diana >>;;;; … and that’s about it tbh. So uh, Carlos/Junpei and Akane/Junpei. I don’t mind Sigma/Diana and it did hit me good but I’m not super into them.

Character I find most attractive: KURASHIKI AKANE

Character I would marry: definitely not kurashiki akane wtf were you thinking junpei. Diana is the only one that can be even considered.

Character I would be best friends with: Carlos

A random thought: when characters have a great no-romo friendship in canon and make me love it, I often end up shipping them, so it’s really surprising that I didn’t end up shipping Sigma/Phi. (I loved them SO MUCH both in ZTD and in this game…)

An unpopular opinion: errr idk what is unpopular. so just a “negative” opinion: out of the series this was probably my least favorite entry, though it had a lot of really REALLY good stuff. But it felt a bit underwhelming as a final installment, it wasn’t as tight and controlled as 999, opened up more questions and brought up new elements that weren’t really necessary, Mira and Eric felt parachuted in for no reason without being really tied to the plot or fitting in with the universe… (Carlos and Sean managed better, and Diana fit in seamlessly). (The tie-in to VLR was amazing though!)… also i’m really mad that the boy WAS called “Q” in official content, like the website. that’s not a ~trick~ that’s an outright lie.

My canon OTP: C-Team is canon right

Non-canon OTP: >> I’m still on Aoi/Junpei and I got unreasonably happy at that one (1) time Junpei asks about him

Most bad*** character: SEAN (sort of)

Pairing I am not a fan of: Mira/Eric had some great moments (with a lot of heart~) but never quite bought me over

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Again, Mira and Eric, mostly because they don’t really evolve or have any reveal or any sort of big climax that changes them (well, the whole gimmick of the game kinda prevents that). There’s shades of that in the epilogue files, but those are very unsatisfying by definition.

Favourite friendship: Mira and Sean.

when or if I started shipping it: like two weeks ago, when it was announced that they knew each other, and then for real the second Nanu pronounced his name

my thoughts: WHAT. THE. HELL.

What makes me happy about them: they’re super funny because they just. don’t care. they do what they want and they don’t give a crap and they’re just really really funny.

What makes me sad about them: it’s probably really, really bad for Nanu’s psychological state and he probably knows and doesn’t care.

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: N/A

Things I look for in fanfic: when applicable, will be sass and snark and absence of serious R&J-style melodrama (although a cynical off-handed study of how fucked up and bad-for-Nanu it is would be gr8)

My kinks: casual, unloving, snarky, cynical “relationship” that is not a relationship, but they get each other, and are probably amongst the very few people who do. Gio appears to be able to predict Nanu very well, and I’d imagine he’s the only person in the world who both knows what kind of world Nanu lives in and doesn’t feel pity for him about it.also they’re probably reaaaaaaally kinky (if nanu can be bothered).

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: they’re both perfectly happy alone with their cat(s). Gio/Delia (Hanako) and Nanu/Looker (Handsome) or /Hala are also totally ok.

My happily ever after for them: nah. I would like nanu to be healthy and happy though, if at all possible, but that would involve no gio.

My unpopular opinion about this character: wtf no she would never get married and start a family what the fuck that’s so ooc who wrote this

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Hmm, nothing in particular, I was very happy with her in canon… maybe more friendship with Ginny? but I actually really like that Ginny is friendly and cool with her without being the bestest of BFFs. Ginny’s just casually cool like that.
