I read a post that said there's a good chance Shuichi never looked Kaede in the eye before she died. They make me crazy.

maki picking up on shuichis lie and immediately going along with it no questions asked in trial 3 is such a good character development moment and shows their weird kyoko parallels sidekick mind meld bond i love. and it's also really funny when an unaware kaito's like damn maki roll how could you forget that???

i just think it'd be really funny if Shuichi was head over heels for this silly lil class clown, then later on finds out he's got ties to the mafia. he tells his uncle about his crush at school, and when uncle asks what his crush's name is and hears it his face goes pale

Shuichi is confused and uncle realizes his nephew has no fucking clue who the fuck his crush actually is and has to gently explain to him that the "cute and playful class clown who always knows how to make him smile" is the heir to one of the scariest non yakuza mafias in Japan.

thank god he found out before they started dating (ofc this doesn't detur him from wanting to date Kokichi, just makes him cautious of his family). meanwhile Kokichi knows Shuichi's uncle is a detective who's had run-ins with his family before because Shuichi mentioned it in passing and cares not because the simpage is too powerful

bonus, i think it'd just be really sweet if Kokichi wanted to protect Shuichi from the crime side of things. like he doesn't want him to get involved and just wants to love him, so while Shuichi may know about the crime he never has to see that side of the family.
