Has anyone written a fic of Billy and Tommy at least interacting with Vivian?
They are, in a real way, siblings. They’re all Vision’s children and Vivian’s mom Virginia was based on Wanda’s brainwaves she gave to Vision.
Wanda actually cares a lot for Vivian as well.
Honestly after all she’s been through the girl deserves some big brothers.
I just feel like those three have alot of hurt-comfort potential with all they’ve been through, the age and experience gap between the twins and Vivian, and the events of the series she debuts in.

what poisonous flowering plant are you?
Doll's Eyes
This is the poison of unchecked vices. You slip into hallucinations. You are wracked with convulsions. The delirium threatens to overwhelm you. What are you running from? You look in every direction, wild-eyed at every turn, seeming some reprieve from what torments you. Each vice brings new consequences, and the price of escape seems too great, yet you cannot seem to face things head on. If you aren't running from yourself, I hope you find a true way to freedom soon. And if you are running from yourself, perhaps you would do well to realize your pain is not something you can simply escape by avoidance. You deserve healing just as much as the ones you love. Someday, soon I hope, you will know this and feel it and reach inward to grant yourself all the kindnesses you offer others. That is the only true way to peace for ones like us. Oh, and if the pain of it seems too great? I hope that you realize you don't have to do it alone.

what poisonous flowering plant are you?
Belladonna
This is the poison of falling in love. You taste it and your heart beats fast. Your eyes dilate, you fall into deep delirium. You may be a bit dramatic and impulsive, and it gets you into trouble sometimes, but you just can't help yourself. It's in your blood. You love because it is the truest beauty you've found in this harsh world. Even when it's hurt you before, when it's poisoned you, you still find a way. They may call you naïve for still believing in it, or vain for making yourself and your surroundings so meticulously lovely. But to love like this is brave and noble, and I hope you find the beauty you seek. Chances are, it's within and all around you already, if you know where to look.
. . .

what poisonous flowering plant are you?
Oleander
This is the poison of stagnation. You grow drowsy. Your heart rate slows, and when you do move you can't seem to stop shaking. It may seem to others that you're lazy, or reticent. Like you avoid hard work on purpose, like you always take the easy way out. But you know deep down that it wouldn't be like this if you weren't so tired, so deeply tired. If you weren't crushed under the weight of sorrow like a mile of water over your head. Nothing brings you peace, except rest and-- though you can hardly dare to ask-- having someone tend to you gently and sweetly. A good gardener speaks to their plants, sings to them, waters them, fertilizes their soil, prunes the dead parts, nurtures the new growth. You yearn to be cared for like that, even though you feel you don't deserve it. The secret is that you do. You always have. And someday, you'll learn that, and receive that care, and the exhaustion won't keep you from growing strong and lovely anymore. You were never the problem. These are simply poor growing conditions for you.

Read annihilation because of you, loved it!
Any more book recommendations?
aw glad you liked it :D
the rest of the series if you liked annihilation of course (tho its not quite as neatly well told they are good and i rly liked them as well. some rly rly good scenes especially the kind of whole run-up to the end of authority and a bunch of stuff in acceptance) . . others:
split tooth - tanya tagaq (heavy but very good, also nice illustration) into thin air & into the wild - jon krakauer (i liked both a lot) jonny appleseed - joshua whitehead (loved this sm) little blue encyclopedia (for vivian) - hazel jane plante (weird and lovely and caring. made me cry) underland - robert macfarlane (i feel like this goes with the weird fascination with abandoned and underground strange places thats in Annihilation but its nonfiction. instead of the tower its salt mines) comet in moominland - tove jansson (moominpappa at sea is one of my other favourites but this is the first novel. first book is technically moomins and the great flood but comet is rly good) the living mountain - nan shepherd (love anything appreciating mountains like this. i love the cairngorms too) our wives under the sea - julia armfield (this is pretty similar in vibes to annihilation, just the domestic came-home-wrong thing instead of travelling into the place that changes you, and the deep sea instead of swampland area x.. i have to assume the author read annihilation bc its v similar energy. i did like it a lot. leah is so me fr)

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
I received a special copy of this book from one of my very best friends. It was originally published in 1982 – not new, but an important classic. The Mists of Avalon is a ~900 page retelling of the legends of King Arthur, his Companion Knights, including Sir Lancelot, and the Round Table – but from the perspectives of the women involved, including Queen Guinevere (here Gwenhwyfar), Arthur’s mother the Queen Igraine and her sisters, Queen Morgause and Avalon’s Lady of the Lake Viviane… and most centrally, Arthur’s half-sister and lover, Morgaine, who we have also known as Morgan la Fay or Morgaine of the Fairies, and Viviane’s sometime successor as Lady of the Lake. Among others. (Sorry. These name changes are a bit to follow. Lancelot here is Lancelet, etc.)
I generally stay away from books of this length in recent years – I don’t know when I last read a book of 900 pages. It took some adjustment around paid reviews and deadlines, but I’m grateful I was able to find time for this one. It took a little over two weeks but was worth every minute. I enjoyed being able to sink into a story this sprawling, which does call for some in-depth engagement, as we follow generations and lifetimes, a quite convoluted family tree, and shifting allegiances (and names).
My own background with the Arthurian legends is weak, although I definitely loved T.H. White’s The Once and Future King when I was young (high school? earlier still? that one over 600 pages), and I remember an illustrated book of the tales of the knights of the Round Table at some point… I have a loose sense of the romance and idealism of Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, and Camelot, but brought no muddied plotlines to this reading. It seems The Mists of Avalon is understood partly as corrective to Morgaine’s reputation as evil sorceress from previous tellings.
There’s no question that Bradley’s is a big, complicated, engrossing story. Its prologue begins with a brief, italicized reminiscence of Morgaine’s from later in her very long life; these retrospective views will punctuate the book. Then we move (with book one, “Mistress of Magic”) to Igraine, who will be mother to both Morgaine and Arthur, when she is a teenaged bride to the much older and coarse Duke Gorlois of Cornwall. Igraine was raised on Avalon, that magical, misty island where an ancient, pagan, woman-centered religion has long been fostered. She has some priestess training and some of the Sight, but it’s been her duty to be a wife and a mother: her daughter Morgaine is Gorlois’s child, and she will later marry Britain’s High King Uther and have a second child who will become the fabled King Arthur. So we begin with Morgaine’s infancy and before Arthur’s birth. I will begin fast-forwarding here… much has been written about this book, and you don’t need my plot summary.
Morgaine will become a priestess of Avalon, and she will become very powerful indeed, but will have to serve the Goddess in ways that pain her deeply. In four parts – “Mistress of Magic,” “The High Queen,” “The King Stag,” and “The Prisoner in the Oak,” we see her play the role of the maiden, the mother, and the crone. She is fierce in her protection and promotion of the religion in which she is trained. It is central to the story of Arthur’s reign, in this telling, that (under Gwenhwyfar’s influence) he shepherds Britain toward a homogenous Christian faith, away from a diversity of indigenous traditions, including the goddess cult of Avalon, and Morgaine fights that transition mightily. Her story is, I think, a tragedy, and includes strong threads of that classic tragic element, hubris (a term Arthur invokes once).
Bradley has chosen to tell this story mostly in a series of close-third-person perspectives, so that the reader can see the thoughts and feelings of one character and then another (the exception being those italicized first-person moments with an older Morgaine), so that we understand that each is dealing with insecurities and ultimately, mostly, good intentions, which heightens the sense of tragedy: that both Arthur and Morgaine want the best for Britain, that Viviane knows she will hurt her beloved niece Morgaine but feels it necessary for the greater good. It is a very fine literary trick to set up no absolute villains or heroes, but rather to offer us flawed humans who try hard and fail. It is hard, though, not to sympathize with the side that wishes to preserve its tradition as one of several, rather than the one that wants to squash out all but one religion.
There are many plot threads, romances, love affairs, couples that produce children (all-important heirs) and those that don’t. There are many themes, a number of which involve women’s various roles in society: to bear children, to be chaste, to support their mates, to participate in political machinations (or not), to be involved in one religion or another. An important difference between the rites of Avalon and those of Christianity centers on sex, which is either a grievous sin in all contexts except strict (marital) reproduction, or a beautiful celebration of life, the natural world, the God and the Goddess coming together. [Same-sex encounters are not many, but also not absent. No surprise that Avalon and Christianity handle them in different ways.] Morgaine’s tradition is inherently feminist, and at odds with Christianity, in that it holds that women belong to no man and may take lovers as they choose and as serves their worship and their life’s work.
This is a work of fantasy (as in magic and sorcery), and a classic retold, as well as historical fiction, as Arthur’s legend offers a version of how the Great Britain we know today came to be. Bradley’s work offers another take, in which a brave woman undertakes to defend indigenous traditions in a time of political and religious upheaval. The outcome, I think, doesn’t change much, but the way we view the different players involved matters a great deal. It’s also, of course, about human relationships. Morgaine, Arthur, Gwenhwyfar and Lancelet go back to childhood together, and there is a refrain late in the book of recalling the few of them who had once been young together. There’s a pretty strong thread of sympathies between friends, lovers, enemies, and those who move between those categories, even when they wind up killing one another.
Bradley’s storytelling is absorbing. It was easy to fall into a world very different from my own here, in the details of women’s lives in royal castles – dark, monotonous, filled with gossip and spinning and sex that’s not entirely consensual, even for privileged women – and in the rapture of Avalon’s powerful priestesses. The mysticism of that religion, the spell of Goddess-blessed sex, and the strong feelings of characters willing to die for their beliefs are all evocatively told. The romance, intrigue and pathos of that famous love triangle between Arthur, Gwenhwyfar and Lancelet is powerful and discomfiting. Heavier scenes are as well written as the light-hearted and humorous ones; Bradley’s characters’ humanity is always present. It was a hell of a journey, and I’m glad to have made it.
Whew. Thanks, Liz.

Tentative Champions Roster For Champions x Umbrella Academy S3
Reality changed with a fizzle, and seven pairs of feet digging into ground they were never meant to touch.
"Well, that... wasn't how I was expecting this to go," Kamala noted, hands resting on her hips as she looked at a giant billboard ad of some superhero group.
"Oh, god, are we trapped here forever?" Qureshi asked nervously.
"Data from previous incidents say we shall be back home in a week, maximum," Viv consoled.
"Standard protocol: we link up with the local team here," Kamala said, looking around, "But which of us were caught in the jump?"
~~~
Kamala Khan aka "Ms Marvel"
They watched the fans gathered at the base of the building, clamoring to grab the towel thrown from the roof.
Kamala wrinkled her nose, "Ew."
"I know," Amka rested a hand on her shoulder.
"I wanna bite something, those costumes are so disgusting. How dare they be the only superheroes and do this."
"Shhh, it'll be alright. Don't fight this guy, you know we need them on our side," Amka said carefully, tugging Viv over to grip Kamala's other arm, in case she tried to lunge at him.
~~~~~
2. Vivian Vision aka "Viv"
They were in a standoff in the mansion, the Champs and two other teams that seemed to have a lot more history with each other.
Finally, the silence was broken by a man with a beard, looking desperately at a corridor, "Mom?"
"'Mom'? She's a robot, you pervert," a woman from the Sparrow Academy said.
"Something wrong with that?" Viv asked, irked.
~~~~~
3. Amka Aliyak aka "Snowguard"
Fei called her crows back to absorb them into her back.
One of them, however, didn't meld into her.
Instead, it transformed into a girl in white and blue clothes.
"Surprise!" she grinned, and then turned into a bear.
~~~~~
4. Nadia van Dyne aka "The Wasp"
The crows drove Allison and Klaus into a closet, and were now chipping away on the outside.
"Hey, you wanna get out of here?" a cheery voice asked from behind Allison while she braced the door.
Both of the Umbrellas yelped, before processing that it was one of the teenagers that had made this whole thing so much more confusing.
This one was the white girl with a bobcut and a poofy skirt.
"We're trying to leave," she pointed out, "But there's murder birds on the other side."
"Also, how'd you get in there?" Klaus asked.
"Snuck in through the gap in the bottom. Pinpoint, get us out of here!" she clapped. A disk of light opened under their feet.
~~~~~~
5. Qureshi Gupta aka "Pinpoint"
They fell through the disk, and landed in blinding sunlight. On a roof.
Allison looked around in surprise, seeing the mansion across the street from them.
"What the hell?" she turned to the girl, "Did you do that?"
"No, I shrink and grow," Bobcut Girl said, "Pinpoint teleports."
A boy standing to the side waved shyly.
"Wow, you're so tiny. Allison, were we this tiny when Dad made us...?" Klaus asked.
~~~~~
7. Fernanda Rodriguez aka "The Locust"
"Coming through!" the girl with the bulky red getup and blue scarf yelled, bringing one massive foot down on Alphonso.
He didn't move, though out of surprise this time than any tactical reason.
The superpowered kick landed, and both him and the girl suffered the full brunt of it, landing side by side on the ground, wheezing.
"You're strong," she said.
"So're you. Super strength?" he guessed, unsure why he was asking. Never fought another super before, after all.
"Nah, don't have powers," she replied, "That's just hydraulics."
Huh.
He thinks he broke a rib.
~~~~~
6. Tommy Shepherd aka "Speed"
They were all catching their breath at the park. Everyone except Tommy, who was nursing a different wound.
"I'm totally going to lose my job," he languished on an entire bench by himself, "And for what? An adventure with the Baby Avengers?"
Viv hummed, "I thought you would be more excited for a mission with me."
He perked up immensely, "Oh, fuck yeah! It's gonna be a brother sister bonding mission! We're gonna make Billy so jealous."
"He's Emperor Consort of two different alien empires. There's nothing you can do to make him jealous," Nadia told him.
Luther looked between them all, "Why're you guys still here?"
Ancestral Chapter 19
Written for Ectober 2023 Day 25: Will-o-the-wisp
.
The moment didn't last.
Danny could almost feel Gwensyvyr fade from the sight of the others.  Not all at once, but not slowly, either.
Matthew made a sort of wounded sound in the back of his throat.  “Danny,” he said.  “Danny, I was dead asleep a minute ago, but that–  That wasn’t–”
“Yeah,” said Danny.  There had to be some sort of protocol for situations like this, some sort of etiquette for introducing an honored ancestor to their living family, but Danny didn’t know what it was.  Any ghost-related formalisms he knew were, after all, learned in spite of his parents.
“It was that thing again,” said Vivian.  “How did it get in?”
It was the first time Danny had heard her speak since…
Since she'd died.
“Technology,” said Gwensyvyr, grimly, “a road we could not take.”
Right.  The thing.  “Jazz, could you…?”
“Yes, sorry,” said Jazz.  She stepped forward and, when Danny relaxed the shield, used the thermos to suck up the remains of the ghost.  Danny would have to see if he could steal some of his mother’s gloves to wash that out.  He wouldn’t put any ghost in such a small with blood blossom residue if he could help it.
The weaker ghosts started to come forward again, surrounding the family closely.  None of them, to Danny’s relief, seemed to be hurt very much.
Irene took a deep breath.  “I will set the table.  Danny, how many of our honored ancestors will sit with us?”
“Um,” said Danny, looking at the packed room.
“Vivian and I, only,” said Gwensyvyr.  “I think that should be easier, yes?  Your other relatives here are closer than I, yet still distant.”
“Two,” said Danny.  “Queen Gwensyvyr and… and Vivian.”
“Former queen might be a more apt title,” said Gwensyvyr, as Vivian winced.  “I am queen only among the dead.”
“Two,” said Irene.  “Two.  That makes twelve of us.  Twelve.  Twelve place settings.  Do we even have anything decent to serve…”  She walked away, towards the kitchen.  “Iris, George, come help me.”
Everyone else sort of shuffled into place around the table, zombie-like.  Except for Lewis.  He picked up one of Joanna’s heavy heraldry books and started using it to smash his phone.
"I could have handled it," murmured Danny as he bent to pick up his bowl of cereal.  He’d knocked it to the floor at some point during the very brief fight.  “The ghost.  You didn’t need to– You could have been hurt again.”
“And you could have been hurt.  For what reason do you think I have stayed, except to watch over my cherished descendants, hm?”
Leo walked over with a wad of paper napkins and handed them to Danny.  “Is Vivian really here?”
“I’m here,” said Vivian, her voice so faint and distant it could have been carried from miles away by an errant breeze.
“She’s here,” Danny said.
Leo’s face crumpled.  “I’m sorry,” he said.  “I’m sorry.  Vivian.  I don’t– I didn’t–”  He shuddered.  “I’m sorry.”
Vivian didn’t say anything, but she was crying.
Irene and her children came back into the dining room with plates and sandwiches.  They set the table in a precise way that felt strangely familiar, as if Danny should recognize the ritual they were following.  When they were done, there were twelve place settings, and each of them had a sandwich, a glass of water, a folded napkin, and a sharp knife.
“Honored ancestors, I invite you to our table,” said Matthew, with a small bow.
There was a long awkward silence as Gwensyvyr and Vivian maneuvered around and through two of the chairs to ‘sit’ in them.  The silence only grew longer and more awkward still afterwards.
“Danny,” said Matthew, “where are they?”
“Oh,” said Danny, realizing the problem.  “Those two chairs.”  He nodded his head towards them.
Matthew sighed in relief and shepherded Danny to the chair right next to Gwensyvyr before taking his own place on the opposite side of the table.
No one touched their sandwiches.
“Please, honored ancestors, we are ready to receive your wisdom.
Gwensyvyr folded her hands in front of her, and her clothing began to blur and fade into something simpler and more modern.
"Perhaps these things are ones I should have spoken to you earlier," she said.  "I will not ask you to forgive me for my lapse in judgment if so.  I had my reasons.  First, I could not, then, I was unsure, after that, there was too much to explain by spelling each word out letter by letter.  And two of those three ran out today, yet I thought, 'What difference an hour?  Two?'" She shook her head minutely.  "Urgency is difficult when one has practiced patience for so long."
"Honored ancestor," said Vivian, quietly, interrupting even as Danny hurried to relay what Gwensyvyr had said to everyone else.  "I think.  I think I should say… what happened to me.  First."
"If you think that best, granddaughter, then I shall not stop you."
Vivian nodded, then turned to Danny.  "You can hear me, too, can't you?"
“Yes,” said Danny.  “Yes, I can hear you.”  He rubbed his eyes.  “I can hear you.”
Vivian nodded.  Briefly, her form flickered bleeding and bloody and bruised, the scars of her death apparent just for a moment.
“I didn’t die at the same time as everyone else,” said Vivian.  She was using the cadence that Danny knew had been trained into her as a future heir to the throne.  She’d complained about it to him and Jazz, once, when they were all younger.  “I didn’t even die the same day.  They killed me the night before.”  She paused and Danny finished repeating what she had said.
“That… matches the coroner's report,” said Matthew, slowly.
It took Vivian another minute to speak again.  “When I’m stressed, I like to walk through the university park.  It’s near my flat.  It’s–  I was stressed that afternoon.”
Leo hiccuped.
“It isn’t your fault,” Vivian reassured him.  “I would have been stressed anyway.  I went out.  I wanted to get a walk before the sun set.  I had energy, I had…  A man came up to talk to me.  That’s not so unusual.  I wasn’t worried.  I had my taser, I had my panic button, security knew where I was, more or less.  He asked me questions about religion.  About modernization.  I thought he was a reporter.  But then I saw him at the coronation, and–”  She broke off, biting her lip.  “Bastard.”
“Wallace Hadryn?” asked Danny.  “That guy?”
Vivian nodded once, tightly.  “He wanted to know what I thought about the progress faction’s proposal for bringing in overseas business.  Wanted to know if I’d consider ‘canceling outdated traditions’ and make a stand for ‘real progress.’  Just– You know how it is.  It was offensive, but normal.”
Danny didn’t know how it was, but it didn’t matter.  His cousins seemed to.
“I told him to get lost.  And he said something about trying the nice way one last time.  And then he changed.  He was the same as that thing.  Maybe he was even the same thing.  I don’t know.  I ran.  I hit my panic button.  But then all the lights went off.  All of them.  It was dark.  It was like anything with any electricity just stopped.”  She breathed in deeply, her chest rising in remembered motion.
“That happens, sometimes, with ecto-energy,” said Jazz.  “But if it was from the same ghost, you’d expect it to break the phone before coming out of it.”
“It might have been the same one, I don’t know.  It could have been something different.  But I was getting away, I was– Then there were the lights.  They were the only lights I could see for at least a mile.  I thought they were normal people.  But you know those stories about not following lights.”  She covered her face.  “That thing was just chasing me towards them.  Herding me.  Ancestors.”
Gwensyvyr patted her gently on the back.
“They didn’t want to kill me, at first.  They wanted the Key and the Seal.  They– After, one of them said something about my Key being the last one.  I don’t know what they meant by that.  There were– There were five of them.  Mostly men, I think.  At least one woman.  They had their faces covered.  They didn’t want to kill me, at first.  They said they had a way to make sure I was thinking about the right things, when I became queen, but they needed to put me somewhere safe, first, and they needed the Key and the Seal.  They tried to take them.  I fought.  I fought.  Just like we’re trained to do.  And I–  One of the new ones, the one in charge, not Wallace Hadryn or whatever he was, they weren’t human, either.  I managed to scratch them, and they just…  Just…  They didn’t stop hitting me.  And the other four started in, and I…”
And she’d died.
“I was… there.  For a while.  Afterward.  They started talking about damage control.  Changed plans.  One mentioned a backup.  The one in charge told them to be quiet and leave.  They took.  The body.  Then I was there.  And I.  I couldn’t do anything.  For a long time.  The lights came back on.  And I saw…” she trailed off again.  “I had…  There was something like the Key.  It looked wrong.  It was the wrong color.  Everything was the wrong color.  But I could… there was something…  You know that story, about using the compass on the Key?  The one with Prince Yon?  It’s real.  And it brought me here.  And I saw Danny.  And he touched the key, and it…  Turned back.”
“Oh, yeah,” said Danny.  “I still have that.”  Because it wasn’t like he was just going to leave that lying around.  He took it out of his pocket and laid it on the table.  Everyone looked at it.  “I don’t know why it did that.  I’ve never touched part of someone’s, um, skyn skryth,” he settled on, finally, not having another good term for the clothing that a ghost wore because they’d worn it when they’d died or when they were buried, “and had it turn real.”
"Oh, yes," said Gwensyvyr as everyone leaned in to look at the Key.  "That is, as they now say, a feature, not a bug.”
Both Vivian and Danny turned back to Gwensyvyr to blink slowly at her.
Gwensyvyr tilted her head.  “What?”
👎 Is there someone your OC can’t stand, despite them being on the same side or sharing basic values?
Oh boy! Let's see:
Vivian: Hm. One of Vivian's major flaws is how willing they are to try to see the good in and help pretty much anyone, so it's hard for them to genuinely not stand someone who they routinely work alongside or share the values of (some of this, to be fair, is that Vivian's values other than hedonism, magnanimity, and keeping their word are...wiggly). It's a stretch to say Vivian and the Veteran Privy Counselor are on the same side, of course, because Vivian and the monarchy do not get along, but despite him shepherding Vivian's rise to fame as a poet and their shared appreciation of art, Vivian fucking loathes the man. Blake: Blake is decidedly more revolutionary than Vivian, of course, and also decidedly more prickly. Still, for someone so linked to and entwined with the Great Game, Blake really dislikes the Clathermonts. There's no deeper reason for that he just doesn't like them and the knowledge that pretty much everyone in the game in London is dependent on one tradition of inked tattoos rubs him the wrong way.
Art and Celestine are both new enough in town that I don't think they've built up any particular antipathies yet -- although they might. After thinking about this question, though, I want to come up with more characters who my characters can't stand for either valid or petty reasons, just bc I think I focus my character-building a little too much on who people like, but who they dislike can be just as interesting.
