God I'm so tired of people acting like not wanting to attract a lot of (often negative) attention is somehow Capitulating To Bigots like. The other day I was talking to someone about my strategic deployment of pronouns based on how much of an issue I think a person is likely to make about it and they were like "oh I just do what I want I'm done catering to cis people" and I was like BUDDY. I LIVE IN THE RURAL SOUTH WANTING TO NOT HAVE TO CONSTANTLY GET INTO IT WITH PEOPLE ABOUT MY PERSONAL GENDER IDENTITY IS NOT CATERING TO CIS PEOPLE I HAVE A RIGHT TO WANT TO MOVE THROUGH THE WORLD WITHOUT CONSTANT INTERPERSONAL CONFLICT

Or like I was talking about how I hate swimwear options bc they're all revealing but if you choose to wear like, a t shirt and shorts, people still stare at you because that's socially unusual so it sucks either way and someone was like "I just do it anyway and if people don't like it they can die mad about it" and like... okay. I want to be able to go to the local pool and not either be uncomfortable with what I'm wearing or have people treat me weird about it. I would like for my presence and clothing choices to be considered neutral and it's fine for me to state that actually. This is not assimilationist or capitulating to people. I see a lot of people in the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom having a lack of interest in Kunikida because of his unexplained backstory and I think it highlights a problem within the fanbase.

Now, Bungou Stray dogs is a show about people finding their “light” in many ways, moving on from the past and finding a reason to live. With Kunikida, the handling of this subject is a bit more subtle than with the other characters.

It’s obvious that something happened in his past, either by the Azure King or with his students making him obsessed with his ideals.

But we don’t need to know what in order for him to be well written.

Trauma doesn’t inherently make a character great. Using trauma as a way to “improve a character” is cheap and bad writing, outside of being kinda problematic.

Bungou Stray Dogs is great at avoiding this. Characters like for an instance Atsushi, Dazai and Kyouka are interesting not directly because of their trauma, but because of their healing journey and the show’s exploration of how they were affected by their trauma.

We see Kunikida value his ideals over his own life, saying that they die if his comrades die but live on when he dies. This is an interesting characterisation, and is also detached from his trauma, in the sense that it explores his character without outright mentioning his backstory.

This is not me saying that I don’t want Kunikida’s backstory. Hell I think it would be super interesting: but the interesting part would be connecting his behaviour to his past, and while it would explain him it wouldn’t improve him.

Look at Dazai’s time in the pm. Was it interesting and characterising? Yes. Did we need to know why he was in the pm in the first place for this? No. The fandom can be curious all they want, but that doesn’t make his backstory obligatory. We know that he was in a dark place and caught Mori’s interest. We don’t need more information in order to understand his character unless it’s relevant for the plot.

I’m tired of seeing people outright saying “they need to give him a backstory”, or that there’s nothing more to him than the surface (ideals, hitting Dazai, next Armed Detective Agency boss). Of course, there’s no problem with being curious about Kunikida or disliking him. Hate any character you want, but have reasoning a notch deeper than “he doesn’t have trauma”.

TLDR; stop treating character as if they’re “dull” because of lack of visible trauma. That is looking at characters from surface level, neglecting the other, very current and very present traits harboured than them. A character is more than their past, which we don’t need to know in order to try and understand them and in order for them to be interesting

Which, it turns out, was chronologically in order! It wasn’t a vision of anything to come after it, it was a glimpse of [Mysteriously Unidentified Lava Lamp Parents] in their Jam Jar, where they went in order to turn back time, before the rest of the series happened. 

I’m guessing that means this is also how they knew to give Lava Lamp his instructions on going to the Clow Kingdom? Because something Else happened the first time around and they Turned Back Time to make sure Lava Lamp went there and caused Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle to happen instead? Which is wild to think about. And yet I'm not entirely sure if that checks out, since Evil Wolverine seems to be slightly outside of time. I suppose I could be wrong about that.

And yet I can’t see any other reason why they would have had to turn back time unless-

OH. WAIT.

… unless they were from the future? 

If they were future characters who went back to the right point in time to set the correct points in motion? 

I shouldn’t theorise about this too much, this is getting very farfetched and I’m absolutely running full speed ahead with very few facts but imagine. 

Imagine what that would mean, when added to the fact that they won’t show us their faces. 

There are only so many characters we would recognise.

There is potentially the most unhinged possible answer about who Lava Lamp’s parents are based on what Clamp will and won’t show us. The main option that isn't Cardcaptor Sakura genuinely doesn’t make any sense.

BUT ALSO, LOGIC IS DEAD IN THIS UNIVERSE. THEY HAVE SET THAT UP. 

DID THEY SET THAT UP SPECIFICALLY SO THAT THE MOST RIDICULOUS ANSWER FOR LAVA LAMP'S PARENTS COULD BE CORRECT?
