ah, emet. i realized just how much i missed him in revisiting this, shb emet especially :(

his “sense of self” is, by and large, the emet-selch we meet throughout our time on the first: split between the one that presents to us his phantom city of amaurot, and the one intoning his final words in front of that same city's skeletons.

the tiny, dwindling "slice" is of course hades, who despite emet's self-assured grasp on the past, is still incredibly different from him: idealistic, unembittered, and far-removed by a thousand thousand lives (emet a "megalomaniacal madman"; the tempest’s amaurot an "insult to the memory" of his people, etc).

of note here is his smile - quirked upwards on his left. a krn fan had noted this back in shb and it has stuck with me since (and i’ll link just the images so as to not raise their post from the grave): the right corner of his mouth quirks when he's "acting" or smiling sardonically, and the left corner quirks when he's being sincere, when his emotions are genuine. here, in his last moments, in entrusting us with the future, his legacy, it is one of two times in the entirety of shb that he puts his mask down and shares with us his real smile. this is my favorite detail of the piece tbh!

some notes!

elidibus was very straightforward to plan out! as the known Memory Issues Man, it was clear to me that the biggest slice of his "sense of self" should be his time in the seat of emissary, set on the moon where he had his fun little talks with the warriors of darkness. this elidibus is also the most fractured - though it's the biggest portion of his self-awareness, it is also the most fraught with incongruities and doubt.

next, his form as the warrior of light, where he challenges us to a final confrontation at the crystal tower.

and at last, his truest and oldest self - themis, under the blue skies of elpis. this is also the smallest "slice", threatening to disappear altogether.

it is so important that you are a little bit ugly. please get comfortable with having unplucked eyebrows and nonexistent jawlines and wrinkles. let your blue hair grow out into an uneven pale green and your clothes be old and mend them and modify them until they’re unique to you. wear lipstick which doesnt compliment your skintone and mismatched outfits which went out of fashion 5 years ago. be a little bit too loud and a little bit too passionate and as weird as you can be because oh my god there is nothing more disturbing to me than perfection. beauty is manufactured and sold to us and you need to realise that you are a fucking animal to live a joyful life I am so serious. you cant obsess over aesthetics forever please just live messily and make your body your home however you please.

if you dont do it for you, do it for all the teenagers who will see u in the street and know that they are not obligated to be attractive
