Whomever did the subtitles for Perfect Marriage Revenge on Viki wanted to make them super accessible and honestly I support that
Tumblr media
[The girl who chased you weaseled (sneaked) into marrying rich.]
Almost every single idiom has a little explanation in brackets. It's very cute. Someone spent a lot of time on that.

best video in the whole world. she has everything. classic romcom trailer, crossdressing, pain and stabbings, toxic yaoi, thai silly sound effects, catchphrases, yeeting, and even masterful kiss-related deception

Caught up with and finished The Rebound and is it just me that thinks it might have originally been 13 eps and they cut it to 12?
In the last 20 mins of ep 12 you had the team losing the final, Zen signing the contract for the Phuket team (not shown), Zen leaving (not shown), Q coming back for no apparent reason except for a few flashbacks (and why was he there watching Ryu being manhandled to the airport anyway?), a 3 month time skip (not shown), First and Prince getting together (not shown), the club being saved and Coach getting his job back (why? how? not shown). AND Zen returning (did he break the contract? what happened?).
It marred what was a solid Thai sports BL with actors who can actually play the sport.
Anyway the cast was decent - I do love a bit of MeenPing and my, hasn't Frank been working out?. Plus, along with the rest of the audience, I now want Coach Ton (Chin Chinawut) in a grown up BL pls.

“I am now a weak scholar and can never again beat you in a fight. What are you smiling about?
“You’re the one who has the advantage. Even if you hit me, I wouldn’t dare hit you back."
“You’re the Crown Prince now. If I hit you, that would be a death wish.”

Rewatching Beyond Evil for the nth time, and I'm wondering something... I initially watched it through Viki, and now that it's on Netflix, I'm rewatching it there. My question is.. which translations are more accurate? I feel like they're pretty different, and the Viki ones feel more accurate, but I'm not sure..

the show set it up so that like. everything is karmically balanced lmfao. kang joo’s mom’s money goes towards paying for da rim’s surgery because he accidentally set her family’s business on fire (and also his mom was being kind of a bitch about her coats) 🤷🏼‍♀️

Netflix has now officially cancelled every single one of their original shows I started watching. Every single one of them on a fan-baiting cliffhanger. One can take this kind of abuse for only so long. My subscription is now cancelled too.

Viki changed its subtitles appearance overnight, and I WANT TO SPEAK TO A MANAGER!
New subtitles
Tumblr media
At its largest size with no options for color change or font change
Old subtitles
Tumblr media
At the normal size (there were still two other larger sizes), and with several color and font options
Updates

Viki, what are you doing?! We can't share screens. You're increasing your price. Now this! Why would you change it without it being complete? This feels like I'm putting on a shirt that says it's an XL when really it's a toddler's medium.
I love you. I will not leave you, but I'm about to send a substantial amount of strongly worded emails and letters to y'all about this subtitles nonsense.
GIVE ME MY PLUS SIZE SUBTITLES!

I get mad fomo when there are references in shows that I don’t get.
I am quite literally learning Thai because the fist ever bl I watched was on Viki and had brilliant subtitles which included explanations of cultural and linguistic nuances. But now I know that other translations are missing those things AND I HAVE SUCH FOMO. So I’m now doing 3 hours of Thai per day.

I've just finished episode 5 of Vivant, and I have to say, I really love and appreciate the mix of languages on this show. You just KNOW that if this show were American, all the "Balkan"/Mongolian characters would be speaking English with a foreign accent for the convenience of the audience. So I absolutely love this show's choice to have huge chunks of the show's dialogue delivered in Mongolian, including lines by the Japanese main characters, and to simply subtitle it in Japanese. No handwaving about how the main characters' foreign contacts just happen to speak Japanese with no expectation that the main characters might also speak Mongolian. No, instead, all the main characters speak Mongolian and English (and Arabic maybe, in Nogi's case?) in addition to Japanese, none of the Americans speak Japanese, only the Balkan/Mongolian characters for whom it makes sense that they would speak Japanese speak Japanese, and the language of the scene is chosen based on what language would most likely be used in that situation in real life. Convenience for the audience is simply not a consideration. And I love it!

"Viki has better subs" I don't think I can agree with that as a blanket statement, but I'd like to point out that if your pay rate is 0 ct/h (or 0 ct/line or 0 ct/character or 0 ct/minute of audiovisual source media, depending on who you're working with) because you're a fansubber who's doing it for free as a labour of love, you can afford to spend 10 seconds or 10 minutes or 1hr on a line until you get it JUST RIGHT -- which is what fansubbers do, and it's great!
But for Viki to actively solicit free labour, then turn around and charge people to watch with them when they KNOW people are coming for the subs THEY DIDN'T PAY THE SUBTITLING TEAM FOR??? that's fucking exploitative and people who want to work in the translation industry should be aware that this is not "a leg up", it's cutting off the branch you're sitting on. translation pays shit to start with. these things (+ machine translation) are just making it worse.
