we made it!! us open draw thoughts:
wta:
iga actually has a very manageable looking draw. there’s really no one on her side of the quarter that I could see troubling her. possibly mirra, but iga just beat her in that incredible match in cincy and I don’t think mirra is quite there yet. in the quarterfinal is probably jess (potentially danielle) who is cursed in slam quarterfinals. jess is also completely wiped from all the tennis she’s been playing and I’m not sure if she’ll have enough energy to beat iga. that being said, jess had beaten her before and it’s definitely possible, especially with the home crowd advantage. also, emma raducanu is in this quarter so that’s definitely something to watch out for!
I’d call this elena’s quarter, but I don’t even know if elena is playing. I’m genuinely concerned for her, her health struggles have gotten so much worse since wimbledon and she’s just in really poor form. if she really is down and out, I could see kalinskaya or garcia taking her quarterfinal spot. honestly though, that side of the quarter is nothing compared to the other side. we’ve got: naomi, penko, karo, leylah, yulia, linda, bianca, and jasmine. all in one half of a quarter! the best matches of the tournament are most definitely gonna be produced from here, and I really can’t predict who of this group is gonna make the quarterfinals. this is the quarter to watch out for and depending on who makes it out, they could challenge iga in the semis
coco’s quarter is also pretty stacked, but almost deceptively so. one side has maria and barbora, but both of them are SO inconsistent and could very easily lose early. paula and vika are also on that side and could make good runs, but you never know when paula is gonna have injury concerns. on coco’s side, emma navarro and marta could make things really difficult for her, but navarro is still in monterrey and marta is marta, she could implode at any time. and then there’s coco herself. obviously she’s the defending champion but she’s had some really shaky results coming into this. if she gets back into that determined, winning ugly mentality from last year she can totally make it through this but if the forehand and serve just aren’t working, she’s gonna have a tough time even getting out of the quarter
and finally, who I think is the favorite for the tournament, aryna. this is the best draw she could have asked for. her projected quarterfinalist is qinwen who she had destroyed in every match they played. everyone in her quarter is someone she can handily beat… except madi keys. everyone remembers that insane semifinal from last year when aryna got bageled and still won it. I think if they do play, that will definitely embolden her but madi is not to be messed with, especially at the us open. all that said, I think aryna has a good path to the semis and I would heavily favor her if she plays coco
interesting r1 matches: andreeva/osorio, raducanu/kenin, ostapenko/osaka, muchova/volynets, putintseva/noskova, andreescu/paolini, zheng/anisimova, keys/siniakova, kudermetova/jabeur
atp:
so far, jannik’s slam draws as the top seed have been absolutely brutal. tommy paul in the fourth round at the us open is rough, and the other side of the quarter is, well, daniil and stefanos. this should be a difficult draw, but both of them are barely even winning matches right now. daniil did just beat jannik at wimbledon, but he lost in the first round of canada and cincy, and stefanos barely did better. and if they played each other, I have a feeling it would be a very long five setter. honestly, I could see felix making a run here, maybe even to the quarterfinals. jannik is for sure still the favorite to get to the semis, and this quarter could implode on itself to help him. if daniil loses early, his biggest threat is tommy paul
carlos, on the other hand, got not one but two injured top seeds on the opposite side of his quarter (hubi and alex). he’s got jack and korda in his section, but neither of them hold up very well in best of five. the match to decide his r2 opponent is bvdz vs shapo. he really couldn’t have asked for a better draw here, though I’m sure he’ll find a way to fit a few epic five setters in there. hubi is definitely still injured, but I’m honestly not sure about alex’s form. if he’s healthy, he can definitely make the quarterfinals, but if not, that other quarterfinal spot is so open. matteo arnaldi, maybe? whatever it is, I’d be shocked if carlos doesn’t make the semis
this third quarter is going to be insane. the taylor-casper side could have an epic fourth round match between the two of them… or they could both lose in the second round. either way, I wouldn’t be surprised. on the other half, holger has been picking up some great form lately and maybe this time it will be enough to beat zverev. he came so close at rg and I think he definitely does have a chance, but unfortunately zverev is the favorite in that matchup. there’s also just a lot of people in this quarter who could potentially cause upsets and make deep runs: gael, bublik, matteo berrettini, lorenzo musetti, gmp. this quarter feels hardest to predict
and finally. this quarter. the grigor/rublev half seems like it’ll be pretty straightforward with maybe jiri causing an upset. with the projected fourth round, I’d say both have an equal chance. but the other half of this quarter is literally just last year’s us open but condensed. there’s a potential rematch between ben and frances in the third round and yes, the winner of that would play novak. I’m honestly not sure how to predict novak here, he looked to be back in his 2023 form during the olympic final but he’s been playing way below that for the rest of the year and hasn’t played a tournament leading up to this. I’m not saying he’ll get upset, but there’s definitely a chance of it and it’s for sure not gonna be easy for him
interesting r1 matches: tsitsipas/kokkinakis, mensik/auger-aliassime, zhang/draper, de minaur/giron, mpetshi perricard/etcheverry, shelton/thiem

BATTS presents: Vessel Of Love
The voice feet's perfect with the song amazing piano production
Vessel Of Love is the lead single off BATTS third album 'Just My Luck', the project of England born-Melbourne based Tanya Batt.
It follows her AMP nominated Sophomore album ‘The Nightline’ which featured songs with Sharon Van Etten and Deep Sea Diver. Supported around the world by BBC 6 Music, NPR, Brooklyn Vegan, NME, Sterogum and other notable outlets, ‘The Nightline’ was followed by tours with Sharon Van Etten, Cate Le Bon, Beth Orton and Peter Garrett before Batt re-entered the studio to create her third album.
Batt’s main focus for the third album was to fall in love with music again, to find the joy and playfulness in it all, something she felt she had lost through grief and the toxicities that exist in the industry. Created alongside her longtime band members Lachlan O’Kane, Brendan Tsui, and Ross Beaton and recorded in the beautiful surrounds of rural Victoria with engineer Alex O’Gorman. It was a chance to experiment and make an album rid of pressures with her musical family, an album she vowed she wanted to make before starting her own family. It covers an array of topics and chapters throughout her own life and gave her a chance to close some doors behind her before walking into the new one of ‘Motherhood’.
instagram
Just My Luck emotionally and sonically ranges from fun and upbeat with numbers like ‘Sell You The Sun’ drawing on influences such as The Beatles and Wilco to the heart wrenching closer ‘Bereaved’.
Batt expresses: “I feel like there is a little something for everyone on this album, the first half is more upbeat and punchy and then it takes a more melancholy turn towards the end. This is my third album and I just really wanted to have fun with my band, take away the pressures and just have a great time creating.”

BIO:
BATTS is the project of Melbourne based musician and space enthusiast Tanya Batt. Creating a blend of folk and rock, whilst previously weaving in samples collected from space missions courtesy of NASA, throughout her music.
2022 saw BATTS moving away from space collaborations and onto collaborating with two of her songwriting idols - Sharon Van Etten with her single ‘Blue’ and Deep Sea Diver on ‘Linger’. 2022 also saw the announcement of her own label ‘I Feel Fine Records’ to launch her Amp Nominated Sophomore release ‘The Nightline’ released on Oct 14th 2022.
Returning again in 2024, BATTS shares her new single ‘Sell You The Sun’ off the back of three sold out headline shows and two sold out shows supporting Beth Orton. Having spent 2023 writing and recording a new album, Sell You The Sun is her first new musical offering since ‘The Nightline’.
BATTS has toured Australia with many international and local artists - Sharon Van Etten, Lucius, Cate Le Bon, Beth Orton, Vika & Linda, The Teskey Brothers, The Magic Numbers, Nilüfer Yanya, Leif Vollebekk and many more.

In 2003, I released my first EP. It was called Ocean. I was earnest, bright-eyed, hopeful. One thing I was not? Cool. I liked cool things, but I looked at them from afar. I liked US pop culture more. If they were dishing it, I was eating it. After 20 years, I listen back to this little EP, and I can hear noughties influences. I was drowning in butterflies, tulle, shimmery eye shadow, fairies, and metallic everything - audibly and visually.
The records on the EP came from the songs I had written as a teenager on my bedroom floor with a guitar borrowed from a friend.
I was a Coastie of the Central Coast variety ‘til 2002 when my Sydney-based musician friend, convinced me to move to Sydney. We used to write music together. Before that, back on the Coast, I was writing and playing with a bunch of guys. We played Kincumber Mountain, the Avoca Beach Theatre, the Terrigal Markets... I had a nose piercing and I would sing Ben Harper covers along with my own material. Once I wore a sweat towel that belonged to the late Juan Nelson, bass player of Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals. I tied it around my jeans. My friend had obtained the crotchet towel for me when Juan threw it into the crowd at a gig. My mum and dad would come watch me at the markets. After those gigs in Terrigal, we would go and have coffee at Aromas on Church St. That café is no longer there. I loved that place.
Once I had written enough material in Sydney, we went into the studio to record my songs. I found a guy named Luke to produce it. I tracked with some other guys from the Central Coast named Gus and his brother Luke who had some very nice recording gear that I believe used to belong to INXS. I had a mixture of musicians from the Coast and Sydney. Great players. Tim, Matt, Nigel, Mike, Peter. My good friend Lindsay sang background vocals - when we paused from our hysterical laughing long enough for the engineer to actually record a proper take. After we tracked, we went up to Rocking Horse Studios in Byron Bay for a few days, and an engineer named Brendan Anthony mixed the songs. I loved working with Brendan. He had good stories about people he had worked with. He affirmed my ideas. We would bounce songs to CDs and all go for drives to the beach to listen to the mixes (RIP car speaker tests). We all played table tennis. We all took exactly, um, zero (i.e., 0) photos. We would bounce more mix ideas and listen in the cottage. I returned to Sydney with a stack of compact discs for Don Bartley, the mastering engineer at Studios 301. In 2003, 301 was located at 301 Castlereagh St, Sydney. And so, there I was, unsure if one sat in on a mastering session or not. I went with, yes, just sit in on it. I had nothing to do for those hours. In order to break up the day, I scheduled a break to procure myself a skinny latte (another 2000s cliché - and a coffee order that I refused to let go of until 2020; a metaphor, if ever). I drank it slowly while I sat on the couch behind Don. There were a few books and zines on the coffee table. I read every word. But I didn’t leave. I was utterly clueless, utterly still. I didn’t want to miss a moment of this process. When he finished mixing, he turned around and gave me great encouragement in my songwriting.
This year is the 20 year anniversary of Ocean - an album that would open little doors. From some great gigs in Newtown supporting Vika and Linda Bull at the Bridge Hotel, Jenny Morris at The Sandringham (at that gig, one of her companions, Jon Farris left me a little starry-eyed when he came up to me and let me know he liked our sound that evening - so I gave him one of my CDs. Did he take it with him? Who can say? But who cares. Not I. Not then. Not now. I played The Vanguard when it was called “The Vanguard” the first time round. I played in New Zealand. I played wherever I could get a stage. I would scour the Drum Media newspaper for new venue ideas. Sometimes I took the band, sometimes I just took a keyboard. I had my name listed with a booking agency, waiting for calls to be invited to play somewhere, anywhere. My song Superyou got a bit of radio play. I took my EP to some record executive who really liked it but wanted me to boost my profile by landing a role on Neighbours. I actually found an agency and got some shots done to try my hand at television. But as I walked out of the photographic studio, I knew I wasn’t being myself.
The more I think about my writing and recording endeavours, the more I realise I was smack back in the middle of a cultural transition. As I look to the context in which my music was birthed, I understand it was well and truly the end of the 90s, and into the new millennium. The live music scene was dying in the early noughties. We were all working out what it would take to survive the transition. I once supported a major artist, and I brought the bigger crowd. That was strange. No one knew what was going on. Communities formed online. Tumblr. Blogs. Wordpress. The noughties would end with me writing for Mia Freedman (another story for another time). But the noughties marked the beginning of the end of magazines, the era of fashion blogs, the seeds of the influencers. And 2003? Well, that was the moment of transition. The world was somewhat cleaning itself up, making way for, my goodness, Australian Idol, Facebook, iTunes. We steamed the vomit out of the carpet. We didn’t save the Sando, Newtown. Regulations came in. Rules came in. Pokies came in. Branding. Marketing. Copywriting.
I have curated somewhat of a museum here on Tumblr (seemed fitting) as an ode to my first EP, Ocean, the first of four projects I would make over the next twenty years. Voiceless (2011) and Carry On (2016) would follow. My new album Familiar Drama comes out soon. Take Me Back to the City, the first of ten songs, is out now. Love, petals, and tiaras, Jules xo

Reading This Week 2023 #6
Testing out colorful text this week for my thoughts on the readings, to better seperate it out visually. What do you think? The default yellow text looked kinda ugly so I went with orange
Finished:
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
i very nearly cried at the second proposal scene. to have this moment between Lizzie and Darcy, where they are completely alone together, with no secrets between them and so all that follows it total comfort and absolutely adorable banter.... AUGH
Beastars, Vol. 4 by Paru Itagaki, translated by Tomoko Kimura
Started and Finished:
"Embodied Knowing: An Experiential, Contextual, and Reflective Process" by Mimi Sodhi
"Fashion and the Fleshy Body: Dress as Embodied Practice" by Joanne Entwistle
Beast Complex, Vol. 1 by Paru Itagaki, translated by Tomo Kimura
I feel like i've said most of what I have to say about Beastars and this connected anthology series Beast Complex already, so what am I supposed to do when I'm going to keep reading it and it's going to keep coming up in these roundups? well I shall just deliver this phrase for now: delightfully fucked up!
two tall mountains by misspickman on ao3
(moss if you are reading this i will come back and comment on your wonderful fic on ao3 itself later, suffice to say i thought it was quite good)
"A Woman's Place is in the Nation" from Britons: Forging the Nation 1707-1837 by Linda Colley
Death of a Sorcerer by Jeannie Lin
fuck. I forgot that Jeannie Lin's work is very enjoyable to read despite being so SO heterosexual in nature. Need to add "chinese historical fiction" to my list of things to seek out to read more of
"Regimental World: Interpreting the Experience of British Soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars" by John E. Cookson in Soldiers, Citizens and Civilians: Experiences and Perceptions of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, 1790-1820 edited by Alan Forrest, Karen Hagemann, and Jane Rendall
"Fashion, Disability, Freedom of Choice" by Heather Watkins
Lavender House by Lev A.C. Rosen, narrated by Vikas Adams
enjoyable queer murder mystery! I did not spend the novel trying to figure out the murderer until the very end, and then in the last couple of chapters I guessed completely wrong because the correct answer seemed too obvious, also I listened to the entire 10 hour audiobook in a single day thanks to my excellent skill of listening to things on times 2 speed (i have a friend that teases me for listening to things for leisure at double speed, and i have nothing with which to defend myself)
Started and Ongoing:
Frequency by cryptocism on ao3
Tea is for Teacher by Recipe on ao3
tbh considering abandoning reading this one even though I've gotten pretty deep into it. i have to constantly coach myself through my DNF policy, which is: there is so much to read out there, so unless a work is extraordinarily short, or mandatory for something, i should only read things i actually enjoy, and not just don't-dislike. since I'm kinda meh on this fic, the policy is coming to mind
Ongoing:
The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty
and once again the DNF policy is starting to rear its head as I reach the middle of the book. I'm hesitating on putting it down because my dad really really likes this series and wants to talk about it with me, but what I've enjoyed most about this book is the action sequences, and i'm kinda meh on the characters themselves
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, translated by Constance Garnett, narrated by Frederick Davidson
while I've been enjoying this, you won't see it on the weekly log for roughly a month because my due date for the library loan came up and I had to return it. I will read it more diligently when it's back in my hands, i promise
Sam Patch, the famous Jumper by Paul E. Johnson
"Base and Superstructure in Marxist Cultural Theory" by Raymond Williams
#cal reading log#bookblr#arwainian princessoid decrees#how do we like the thoughts in colorful text?#i think it's a good way to seperate my thoughts when I dont have something to say for everything read

“The life we chose hasn’t been easy but it sure has been fun. We have had a lot of memorable moments and met a hell of a lot of nice people along the way who encouraged and supported us.” 🎶✨🎶✨🎶 No Bull by Vika and Linda Bull is a memoir told in the perspectives of both sisters, which details their lives and careers. Told in the very distinctive voices of both Linda and Vika, they take in turns to detail their lives from their earliest memories, to how they become two of the most famous singing sisters in Australia. One of the things I most enjoyed learning about the sisters Tongan heritage, and the way it affected and changed the way that they viewed the world around them, and how it affected their music. I have to admit that this book wasn’t quite what I was expecting, and as such, I didn’t quite enjoy it as much as I expected to either. I felt that due to both sisters writing the novel, we often were told the same experience from differing perspectives, which made the 311 pages feel so much longer. While not what I was expecting, I am glad to have read this during Nonfiction November. 🎶✨🎶✨🎶 No Bull is book 108 for 2022. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2022 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #nobull #nobullvikaandlindabull #vikaandlindabull #memoir #nonfictionnovember22 https://www.instagram.com/p/CmbeCXdrdp9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
