Is the grid a friend group?

Short answer; no. But we are here to analyze and discuss, so let's figure out why not and what else the grid can be described as.

In a friend group, you pretty much choose who's a part and who isn't, something that's not possible in F1 where team principals and other higher ups decide who is in the group and who is not. It's also too big to be a proper friend group and too forced.

If you want to describe the F1 grid, I would compare it to a class. It fits not only from the size, but also the set up; the people in a class cannot decide either who is in said group, instead they are forced to spend time with these people and there's smaller groups within. To strengthen the comparison, i'd argue the teammate lineups are similar to seating neighbors; a small bit of mutual liking is needed for things to work out but generally you can't really choose, at least I don't let my students choose.

This can also be used to talk about dynamics on the grid and I would assume makes it easier for some of you to understand that while they aren't necessarily close friends, they all know each other in some way because they are forced to.

I would like to make three examples though;

Oliver Bearman joining the grid and being supported by multiple experienced drivers makes sense, they’ve all been there and even if they aren’t in the same team or even close, they all made sure he felt welcomed and as a part of the group.

Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz becoming friends. Usually I am not a big fan of the assumption that everyone who are teammates are friends, just like how you aren't friends with everyone you ever sat next to but were just forced to talk because there was no one else. These two met each other like that though and became real friends like it sometimes is.

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, arguably the relationship why I've spent some time to even think about this. A lot of people claim their friendship is only PR, they are not friends and only talk for cameras, but i think it's more difficult than that. Unlike Sainz and Norris, they didn't hit it off instantly and became great friends, but I do still think that they talk, even if only because they are forced to spend time together in the garage. With Sainz leaving, it's interesting. Even if they weren't proper best friends the way Sainz and Norris were, it's still sad and weird to not be close to someone anymore.

Another thing that made this come up again was the recent grill the grid episode, where Norris didn't remember Ocon which proves my point that they aren't a friend group. There's videos of them talking, they know each other, but they are in completely different smaller friend groups on the grid. In the end it's not that deep, Norris forgetting Ocon isn't him bullying Ocon out but simply proves that they aren’t best friends.

It is important to mention though that I do not know these people and it's only observations and interpretations based on my own experiences with class and friendship dynamics. Like always, if someone disagrees or feels the need to share their opinion, I'm free to hear anyone out.

Also; drivers forgetting the names of other drivers they are supposed to be friends with isn’t that deep either. Today i accidentally called my best friend of seven years the name of my cat, it's really not that deep.

1. british gp 2023: lando spots carlos from afar and goes “ omg it's carlos sainz ! ” . when crofty goes onto ask “ do you have to wave at him everytime ?” lando answers quickly with a “ i want to beat him ” cue to oscar agreeing with crofty and replies “ yes. he has to. (wave every single time he sees carlos) ” + crofty pushing the carlando bromance agenda.

2. british gp 2023: post race interview. carlos asked about lando's podium. “ congrats on the p2. i wish he would have won more than p2, but still congrats. ”

3. the iconic interview clip i go feral over aka lando accidentally calling daniel “ carlos ” .

4. “ sorry i was looking at the podium ” . self explanatory.

5. “ bromance , romance? it's the same thing no?” (australian gp 2023.)

6. that ass tap during the dutch gp 2023, and carlos looking confused as to why was he even walking ahead and lando looking back to check if carlos was following him?? what the actual hell? someone give me a heterosexual explanation for that?

7. “ i'll decide what to do , with lando . " — austrian gp 2023.

8. carlos's wedding post. CarLando; wedding edition. self explanatory.

9. the garage video with the alphatauri drivers making their way through the ferrari garage, and everyone in the ferrari garage unphased and greeting lando. lando chilling in there like it's so habitual. nobody bats an eye. cue to carlos practically chasing away both yuki and daniel.

10. spanish gp 2023. the entire press conference. whatever foreplay was happening and the way lance just moves to give lando space because it's obvious lando would sit with carlos. (+that lando's “vamos!” comment and reposting f1's post as a story captioned “ home grand prix for mr español 🇪🇸. worth carlando post needed ”. because there is no lando without carlos and no carlos without lando.

Charles would want to cuddle 24/7 with you if he could. He'd prefer to be the big spoon so he can wrap his hands around you and pull you closer to him. He also likes to smell your shampoo/perfume when he leans in to give small kisses on your neck. The type of cuddler that brings you closer to him when you try to get out of bed.

Carlos Sainz

Carlos would move to cuddle with you when a movie is playing or the two of you are just relaxing on the couch. He likes it when you lay your head on his chest so he can play with your hair and still pay attention to the screen in front of him. At night, the set up is usually the same, especially when he had been gone from home for a longer period of time, he holds you closer to him by wrapping an arm around you.

Max Verstappen

Max is the biggest softie. Usually cuddles before bed and loves being the small spoon, but he'll never say it out loud. Wrapping your arms and legs around his taller body puts him right to sleep. He likes holding your hands when they're around him. His cats usually stay at the end of the bed with the two of you. Bonus points if you play with his hair.

Checo Perez

I can see Checo moving around a lot when it comes to cuddling, but he wants to feel a part of you at all times. He would like it when you put your hands on his chest and talk with him about your guy's day before falling asleep. He also likes to cuddle right after the both of you shower and use the lotion he really likes on you.

Sir Lewis Hamilton

O lord, where do I begin. He would be a 10/10 cuddler. He would help you pick out the most comfortable (and stylish) pajamas to wear while he would probably to go bed without a shirt. Having Roscoe next to the two of you is a must and sometimes you wake up with him in the middle of you two. Lewis wouldnt mind any position, but he prefers being the big spoon. He would go all out too, preparing a bath for the two of you, massaging you with the best oils, and doing skin care together.

George Russell

Refuses to be the little spoon. (You've convinced him once or twice) Being taller than most people he would want his body wrapped around yours when cuddling. He also doesn't wear a shirt to bed and opts for long pants or shorts. Likes to go on his phone right before bed and tell you all the gossip he reads about (Pierre sends him screenshots).

Pierre Gasly

I think Pierre is the type to sleep naked lol. But if he has to wear something, you'll usually see him in boxers. Cuddling with Pierre would be a treat because he's either staying up late to play video games with Yuki or waking up early to go work out. I also see him being a radiator, emitting a lot of heat when he is sleeping. Pierre prefers to sleep on his back so anything position like that works for him.

Lando Norris

Lando would interesting to cuddle with,,, this boy would move around 100 times in one night. First he'd be the big spoon, move to sleep on your chest, and finally sleep in a starfish position lol. Lando will cuddle with you in the daytime preferably. He usually has you sit on his lap like a koala when he is gaming on his computer. When Lando loses in a game he'll accidentally curse in your ear, but give you lots of kisses to make up for it.

Daniel Ricciardo

Daniel's love language is physical touch and being near you all the time. It is a necessity to cuddle with him after returning from a trip. He'll be the big spoon and dig his face in your neck bringing you close as physically possible. If you're facing each other he'll trace the lines on your face bringing you to sleep faster. Daniel is a light snorer and feels bad about it lol.

Mick Schumacher

Mick is such a cute cuddler. He loves to have the air conditioning on blast, so expect him to have like three blankets. However, he's a blanket hogger and will have all three blankets on him. After the pre-season testing in Barcelona, that one pic of me with Charles blew up, we are already getting used to the questions about our “relationship”. We got closer after that day in the parking lot, not like best friends but I think I know him better now.

In the two next press conferences, we got paired up together and I was able to calm him down. Everyone noticed, our teams, the public and most important: the sponsors. I am not like his therapist but I can cut him whenever he’s going to fuck up, let’s just say that years of bickering made me used to him being a dick.

Yesterday Ferrari and Aston Martin posted the same video of us taking ice baths together after the quali. Long story short everyone is shipping us, maybe a little too much in my opinion but that’s good for us. Big part of the public tend to forget things pretty easily, like all the records of our F2 days, F3 and even karting pics that let our rivalry very clear. But for some fans it’s just a cute little love story of childhood rivals to lovers, and we are counting everyone believe in this version.

Geez what a feeling! But I finally can get at least 2 minutes for myself, my cheeks even hurt from smiling too much. Everything just- No fucking way, my mobile started ringing. I really didn’t want to get up but thank god I did. “Mike Krack” was written on the screen.

“Mike, is everything good?” 

“Hi, yeah everything’s good. And beforehand I know how tired you must be but I need you to do something for me, girl”

I get out of the car and do a little dance (which I will probably regret later) but I don’t even have time to think after jumping to the ground since a red flash came running towards me and hugs my waist taking me off the ground.

I took longer than I should to recognise the “red flash”, but when I felt the smell of white peach and orange blossom I knew right away it was Leclerc.

His perfume had been impregnated in my clothes lately after having to hug each other all the time in public, so when we pulled away from the hug I already knew who it was.

“You did so well!” He opens his helmet’s visor 

“Thanks, you too! You got p1 Leclerc!” He opens my visor this time, holding the sides of my helmet and looking into my eyes, smiling. The way he looks right into them is like he searches a reason to be doing it, or like he knows something I don't, or like he sees the future in my pupils.

“But just to be clear, I hated to hear about you pressing in Sainz over the radio” the way his eyes crinkle when he smiles is actually cute, and the colour of them look like the Mediterranean Sea with a bit of sand depending the way the sun shined on them is so interesting

“Just doing my job, baby” and then Sainz came over to hug us both and talk about the race going to the cooldown room.

“‘M gonna meet him in some minutes. And we are not going to talk about that hug okay?” I told him while sending the said Ferrari driver a message

“Sure sweetheart” he laughs loudly

“Bye Mike, I hate you” call ended and some mental health back

I love how open Charles is with his feelings (sometimes it's definitely accidental) but he's so consistent that it's easy to notice a change or a reoccurring pattern.

A lot of fans knew how bad this season was going to be based on his reaction to the car. His lack of posts about wanting to fuck the car and his excessive use of 🙃 instead of ❤️😘 was so clear that we were in for a rough season and this was all before Bahrain had even happened.

His Instagram posts from each race week is a clear indication of how he felt. Some races didn't get a photodump because they weren't great, some races got a song which is even worse. The good races he posted the positive bits like Japan he posted the pitcrew because he had the fastest pitstop and he congratulated Redbull, he posted Max in his photo dump because they had a good race etc and in average races he mostly posts his helmet and car for example Singapore.

He's also ridiculously easy to read. You don't need to be an expert in body language to understand his emotions, real heart on his sleeve type of guy. A lot of his reactions and words he's consistently had since being a child so it's easy to notice a pattern like the pouty teeth grit when he's not enjoying himself, the whole "it's like this" saga etc

It's also easy to tell if he's happy with his team and teammate depending on how much he mentions them in interviews, includes them in his posts and likes tweets about them. This year Carlos is very absent from Charles Instagram (especially in comparison to Seb) to the point of Max Verstappen and Ollie Bearman both having more appearances. Charles has also done the most to avoid talking about Carlos in multiple weekends from changing the subject to ignoring the fact they said Carlos and answering it about other drivers. I don't think they hate eachother but this year was way worse than last and has really shown how much they don't get along outside of pr videos which is understandable with how often Sainz camp start saying shit about Charles and with how often Carlos drags Ferrari I don't doubt Ferrari's number one fan would be happy with that. Okay maybe I just got schooled by a real Charles girlie lol. I’m totally open to the idea that my view on him may be all wrong, I don’t know the guy.

I just feel like, for example, body language is not something you’re able to control, and maybe he does have certain tells about when he’s about when he’s not happy with the weekend etc., but when have you ever heard him say something just totally out of pocket. I haven’t. I think he’s quite a self possessed person, and I think what he can control he does.

I just feel like most people think about Charles the way Charles would like to be thought about. And I will say, I think a part of that is his “Everyman” image and how he feeds the para social relationship. I think he likes that people feel like they know him, but I don’t think there’s anything we know about him that he doesn’t want people to know. And I know I’m making it sound madly Machiavellian but I don’t think it’s a manipulative plot, more that the guy likes being liked - who doesn’t. Max Verstappen: has never even considered it. He’s already had enough of extra time. Absolutely no nonsense penalty taker. Just runs and whacks it.

Sergio Perez: no, he’s sensible. He might think about it in training he wouldn’t do it in the actual situation.

Lewis Hamilton: already did it once before when he was a young upstart but wouldn’t do it now

George Russell: no, and he will give you a whole PowerPoint about why trying to do a panenka is not Optimal

Charles Leclerc: wouldn’t be allowed to take a penalty. If he was still on the pitch he would probably be last to go if the shootout even got that far.
