Random Thoughts about Sydney and Carmen

The more I thought about it, the more Sydney and Carmen represent Yin Yang to me. In almost every sense, they are complete opposites that have to work together in order to find harmony. Here are some quotes on what yinyang is and how Sydney and Carmen fit into that dynamic:

This drawing illustrates the exact binary of their characters. Male|Female, Black|White, Quiet|Loud, no Mother|No Father. Secondary Education| Self Taught. I can keep going with the ways their characters are designed as polar opposites. The success of The Bear depends upon finding out how to balance their polarities and use them as advantages. The restaurant and themselves need each other to mature and survive. They are attracted to each other’s differences but what they are striving for requires them to resolve their struggle for dominance.

As the Zhuangzi (Chuang-tzu) claims, “Yin in its highest form is freezing while yang in its highest form is boiling. The chilliness comes from heaven while the warmness comes from the earth. Carmy is literally frozen. Although he represents a lot of elements of heat in s1, they have almost swapped at the point in time we are in now. She will metaphorically burn it all down by leaving. Carmy has the power to cleanse all of them by finding closure on his path and allowing himself to see a different future. His anger boils over like hot water, while her simmers beneath the surface like lava. Her quiet inability to speak up for herself will lead to destruction. But if they work together, communicate, they will find harmony and continue to give life (birth) beautiful things. As evidence by the education they have already passed on to their staff. As focused on by Chris in 307: Legacy.

“The philosophical principle of Yin and Yang evolved into the idea that all things in the universe exist as inseparable and contradictory opposites. Or pairs of equal opposites that attract and complement each other. Less like “opposing forces”, and more “complimentary forces”.

Think ‘balance’, not conflict.

In short, the yin-yang has come to symbolically represent the constant path of uniting opposites and the pursuit of seeking balance in life.”

I firmly believe that they need each other to find perfect harmony. Now that they are in each other’s lives nothing they do on their own will ever feel complete. They have to find the balance within their mirrored paths to create the harmony they are looking for creatively, professionally, and emotionally within each other.

WHAT CARMY DOESN'T GET: LUCA GETS IT ALREADY

CARMY is inspired by Sydney but he's just looking at the outside and not communicating with her or doing that vibrant collaboration to get inspiration from the heart of her.

So he can make the food look like her headscarves all he wants, untill they both collaborate and GET IT TOGETHER, nothing good will come out of it

CARMY has all of these available to him and still hasn't gotten it yet.

I love this!! And I think what Molly said about pushing is almost leading in what she doesn't say. So if Claire needed a push in her last relationship, and has learned to push Carmy...then what's not said is that Carmy is learning with her that he needs to push someone else...Sydney.

I saw some discussion about Marcus being Syd's pusher in the comments, in a parallel to Claire/Carmy. And maybe...but I think one of the things that makes the thought of pushing so compelling to me between Syd and Carmy is that it's mutual. They both have things that the other needs, both have things to learn from the other. We've never seen Marcus inspire Syd in the show the way she has given him inspiration. And other than the time we hear (not see) that Claire "helped" Carmy with the menu (which, honestly, I'm not convinced wasn't just Carmy talking through his thoughts at Claire who was sort of engaged in the conversation, a la their chat the morning of fire suppression test day versus actually providing him inspiration), she's not really given him inspiration either. But we have episodes upon episodes of moments of Carmy and Sydney pushing and inspiring each other -- vibrantly collaborating.

This post by @vacationship has me thinking and others will disagree with me and that's okay.

I'll briefly take off my shipping glasses for a second. Some people are still debating the issue of "pushing" in the context of Sydney and Carmy based on the trailer. Personally, I support the idea of pushing if it's obvious that two people have feelings for each other and one of them is holding back due to fear. At least pushing the other person for clarity and honesty is okay.

I see the push that Molly, Chris, and Carmy are talking about as one of us is too scared to jump off this cliff into the unknown, but someone has to push and try this shit out.

It just wasn't with the right girl.

Claire's push was fine when she asked for Carmy's phone number. Her experience is that she waited in her last relationship, and nothing happened, so she wanted to go for it again. Also, maybe she was told by Mikey and Richie how much Carmy liked her, and it just confused her a bit, and she also knew that Carmy was really shy so she wanted to push him.

However I'll admit that the chasing his number is another thing, but she also cleaned it up by giving him another chance and asking him if he really didn't want her to have his number.

Now is the story purposefully asking if the guy did this it would be a different story? Or is storer right, there's always the pusher in relationships?

Anyway, perhaps there was a part of Carmy, although a small one, that has always wanted Mikey's approval and did want a relationship with Claire. It seems like Carmy, who tends to be avoidant, might need some encouragement when it comes to dating. Dating can be scary for him, especially because he's used to working a lot and doesn't have much of a social life. He also tends to expect the worst, even when good things like relationships happen.

Now Carmy says to Sydney, "So you can push me, and I can push you." That's a necessary dynamic for both Carmy and Sydney since they tend to avoid. Carmy pushes Sydney when he tells her to say more and her trying to avoid him won't work for their partnership.

I notice that Carmy is often encouraging Sydney to be more open and to deepen their relationship. I think it would be better if Carmy takes the initiative in pushing for this so that people don't wrongly assume that Sydney is the only one with a major crush on Carmy and it was her fault that he didnt pursue anything with Claire. Carmy should show that he is willing to pursue. It's also good for his character growth, so he's not letting things happen. This time, he wants and chases for good things.

In creative partnerships, it's important to be able to push each other to achieve the best results. This mutual push for perfection can lead to pure magic. I've witnessed this dynamic in the kitchen when working with others to create the perfect dish. Competition can be a joyful and productive force when the goal is to bring out the best in one another. When I was acting, I thrived on pushing my scene partner to fully engage and be present in our work, and I loved it when I found that scene partner to do the same to me.

But looking at both creativity and relationship-wise, it seems that pushing is necessary for both Sydney and Carmy's growth. This is a bit scattered, but hopefully, it's clear enough.

What is going on in this scene? Why is Syd smiling like that given the words Carm is saying to her?

I love this whole thread so much!!

I've also been reading Heinz Robert's Vibrant Collaboration book lately and I'm convinced the mention of vibrant collaboration plus the themes in this thread are an intentional reference to the book (or at least, the concepts contained). @thoughtfulchaos773 has a great post outlining a lot of the concepts informing the book here, and I'm working up to writing my own post once I finish it. I'm not really adding a lot, other than to say after digging into the text itself as well as reading all of this excellent meta, that it all feels very intentional and referential and specific.

Sublimation and Intellectual Orgasms

During a conversation with @thoughtfulchaos773 about Freud and his theories surrounding sublimation (you can read thoughtfulchaos773’s brilliant post about it here) I found this in a psych review by Richard Bukowski:

In the third form of sublimation, “the rarest and most perfect…the libido evades the fate of repression by being sublimated from the very beginning into curiosity and by becoming attached to the powerful instinct for research as a reinforcement…Sexual repression, which has made the instinct so strong through the addition to it of sublimated libido, is still taken into account by the instinct, in that it avoids any concern with sexual themes.”

The key to sublimation to go in this direction is having a strong enough repression, from either disgust or shame, that the projects of research and understanding replace sexual release. For example, if I research something I don’t understand about a Freudian concept, it can be a setup that requires a payoff, like the stress of dating and then sex. Then when a profound intellectual understanding is achieved it’s like an intellectual orgasm.

This idea of sexual repression being redirected into intellectual revelation reminds me of Carmy’s struggle during season 3. Carmy is suppressing his feelings for Sydney and redirecting these urges towards menu creation and getting that star.

In Apologies 3x09, Carmy tells Sydney he is close to figuring out the plate. After Sydney leaves, Carmy realizes that her recurrent use of polka dots in her wardrobe has made its way into the dish he is working on. Carmy is having intellectual orgasms through dish creation as a result of his sublimation and sexual repression of his feelings for Sydney.

According to Freud, sublimation happens when sexual urges are repressed due to shame or guilt of those urges. Carmy harbors both of these emotions towards his feelings for Syd. Shame because he made himself believe he is not worthy of enjoyment or amusement. Guilt because he is supposed to love Claire. This is why he throws out the dish and then attempts to apologize to Claire, for closure and atonement of his guilt and shame.

If you want to tame wild Minimals, go visit Silvershade’s Ranch in the Lani Archipelago! They will send you out into the wild to catch and tame a Minimal through an interactive Herding mini-game. Bring berries, toys, and plushies to tempt and distract the Minimal as you and your pet cooperate to befriend it.

A Dynamic World

Santae’s sunny days and mysterious nights each hold their own mysteries to explore, watch as the clouds move while you play, and every hour on the hour you can watch the transition to day/night. As the world cycles between states every hour, you and your pets have the chance to make exciting new discoveries!

Visiting the Lava Caves in the dark of night will bring you face to face with the opportunity to tame a fearsome Grusim – but during the light of day, the Grusim retreats. While the sun shines over the Lava Caves, you can instead bring your Harlowin egg there to hatch into a new companion.

Exciting Events

The most important ingredient in the world of Santae is you: The community!

Over the course of THREE exciting events, our Alpha Testers have been able to participate in and shape the future of the game’s world. Together, we’ve discovered new Minimals, locations, and even new pet species.

The Goopper Swarm

Mysterious slug-like Minimals swarmed Gathering locations all across Santae, prompting adventurers everywhere to collect them in an attempt to learn more.

By collecting the Gooppers and discovering their source, Santarians discovered a brand-new location: The Goopper Grotto. This tranquil forest clearing holds an amazing secret: When you bring a Goopper there alongside certain powerfully magical items, the Minimal will transform!

The Mourning Grusim

By following the traces of an ancient legend, adventurers learned of a mythical creature lurking deep within the Lava Caves.

Together, Santarians discovered sanDust: A secondary currency earned through site activities. This magical dust proved to be the secret to calming the ferocious ancient beast within the caves. By working together to collect sanDust, the community unlocked the ability to tame and adopt the Grusim for everyone!

The Quibbit Cove

When Santarians began to discover mysterious eggs around the site, they banded together to collect them and learn more about them. Together, we learned how to hatch Quibbspawn eggs into a brand-new Minimal: The Quibblet!

But the Quibblet was no ordinary Minimal. More ancient clues pointed the community towards a newly-discovered location, Quibbit Cove. It was there that the true secret of the Quibblet was revealed: Feeding it in the cove causes it to evolve into a fully-fledged pet, the Quibbit!
