Moon rise over Veteran's Day evening and I'm enjoying my favorite cigar, The Tabernacle Havana Seed CT No 142 from Foundation Cigars. This is always a solid stick and I've paired it tonight with the fantastic V5 Bourbon from Smokey Quartz Distillery, a Veteran owned and operated distillery out of Seabrook, NH. Happy Veteran's Day to my fellow vets and a toast to Armistice Day which is observed on this day around the world. .... Putting some smoke in the air in remembrance of the crews of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Lightship-82, Plymouth, Leafield, Wexford, Regina, James Caruthers, Henry B. Smith, Hydrus, Argus, John A. McGean, Charles S. Price, Issac M. Scott, William B. Davock, Anna S. Minch, Novadoc, and other vessels lost between November 9 and 12 in major storms on the Great Lakes between 1913 and 1975. During the "White Hurricane" of 1913, 12 ships were lost with all hands, more than 250 sailors, an 7 additional ships were completely destroyed while 19 others were driven ashore. The LV-85 was lost with all 6 of her crew while they remained on station to help guide ships to safety. Only the body of her Chief Engineer Charles Butler was ever found. She was raised in 1915, refurbished and served until 1936. In 1940 the Armistice Day Storm claimed 66 sailors, 3 steel freighters and two fish tugs on Lake Michigan. The "Fitz" was lost November 10, 1975 with her crew of 29 on Lake Superior, the largest ship ever lost on the Great Lakes. .... "Captain Williams and his crew were guardians and they would remain at their station until blown away or ordered to move. I know this because I know the caliber of my husband and the men who served him on the lightship.” - Anne Marie Williams, when asked if LV-85 would have sought safety .... #cigar #CigarLover #CigarAfficionado #cigarphoto #cigarlife #pssita #sailorandsticks #cigarsandwhiskey #TapThatAsh #whiskey #bourbon #whiskeylife #WhiskeyLover #whiskeyphoto #WhiskeyNeat #WhiskeyAfficionado #whiskyandhistory #quote #quotestagram #uscg #greatlakes #galesofnovember (at Coastal San Pedro) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck2RLyOLsGo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Launched as Manola on January 21st, 1890 at the Globe Iron Works in Cleveland for the Minnesota Steamship Company. 282 feet long and 40 feet wide, she would go to work in the ore trade. In 1895 the steamer would come to the rescue of the freighters Cayuga and Joseph L Hurd in Lake Michigan. The pair collided off Charlevoix in heavy fog. Crews from both ships were saved, except for the cook off the Hurd who tried to swim to shore and drowned. Cayuga sank. In 1901 Manola was sold to the newly formed Pittsburgh Steamship Division of U.S. Steel. In 1912 she loaded the first cargo of limestone at Calcite. Postcard from Skip Gillham collection.

“SHIPPING ON THE GREAT LAKES” A large vessel on Lake Superior at Duluth. Very quickly scratched down with a CROSS Bailey fountain pen with PLATINUM Carbon ink and watercolor added with a PRINCETON brush in a 6” x 8.25” IKEA sketchbook. Based on a Dan Antion photo, so it’s a Virtual Sketchwalk. #LobstArtstudios @tom.brudzinski #dessinateur #artist #dessin #sketch #drawing #quicksketch #RanDOODLINGdom #croquisrapide #croquis #szkic #crossbailey #platinumcarbonink #watercolor #watercolour #akwarele #akwarela. #virtualsketchwalk #duluth #duluthmn #greatlakes #greatlakesshipping (at Duluth/Superior Harbor) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ4pIdXrYhc/?utm_medium=tumblr

For all the talk of “online dashboards”, I am seldom impressed by attempts to bring real-time data to the web for people to wander around in. Not only is this detailed, informative, and not something I knew was available to the public, it’s accessible, and the simple menu and clearly labeled filter options make it effective for navigation.
My favorite feature is definitely the “baseball card” style badges that pop up for each vessel showing national sovereignty, stats, and a photo. I feel like I’m a strategic commander in a risk-style video game, deploying troops at my command.
It’s a wholesale rip from marinetraffic.com, but while you’re here, a fun fact: the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation is one of (and certainly the most specific and least known) thirteen administrative divisions in the US Department of Transportation.

At one time journeying to and from #Manitoulin by ferry was essential for local business, residents and anyone travelling to the Island. Many faithful vessels have served in connecting the South and North shores of Lake Huron, but today it is the @mschicheemaun which carries passengers and their vehicles each day in the warm season. The name Chi-Cheemaun means "Big Canoe" in the Ojibwe language and it has been in operation since 1974 as a secondary means of access to #manitoulinisland. The ferry received a series of upgrades in the last five years including a new dining room, forward lounge and entertainment space for live concerts, on board events and displays. In addition to this, it now also features a beautiful set of woodland inspired decals that have been installed along the smokestack and bow of the ship. As a resident of Manitoulin, I couldn't be happier about all the hard work and effort that has gone into rebranding and refreshing one of the island's staple attractions. It's been my pleasure creating this center spread custom colouring page for the Owen Sound Transportation Company in our new book, which highlights the MS Chi-Cheemaun in all its glory. If you're travelling through #Canada this summer, consider taking a ride on the big canoe and discover the world of hidden treasures that the #GreatLakes has to offer! 🚢🌊✨ . . . . . >>>See the full picture on my IG profile! . . . . . In 1918 Manola was sold to the United States Shipping Board and was cut in two for a late season trip down the St. Lawrence. A storm on Lake Ontario in December of that year saw the bow section sink near Main Duck Island and 12 men were lost. The stern section ended up in Quebec City. Eventually she was rebuilt and her new length was 248 feet. Her new owners were the Montreal Transportation Company in 1919. Photo from Dossin Marine Museum. Skip Gillham collection.

Canada Steamship Lines began operating the vessel and it was renamed Mapledawn. CSL took over ownership in 1920. At the end of 1923 the vessel was taken to Collingwood and rebuilt for the upper lakes trades. Her new length was 356 feet as shown here. But Mapledawn did not make it to the end of 1924. Carrying a load of barley she was wrecked off Christian Island in Georgian Bay on November 30th. Winter storms spelled her doom. The wreck remained there until 1942. A high demand for scrap metal during the Second World War saw much of the vessel cut up and brought to shore in barges. Photo from Milwaukee Public Library. Skip Gillham collection. Information from "The Early Ships of Canada Steamship Lines co-authored by Jay Bascom and Skip Gillham. Also the writings of James Donahue.

On this day - 1986 - ALGOSOO suffered a serious fire at her winter mooring on the west wall above Lock 8, at Port Colborne, Ontario on March 7, 1986, when a conveyor belt ignited, possibly caused by welding operations in the vicinity. The blaze spread to the stern gutting the aft accommodations. The ship was repaired at Welland and returned to service on October 6. Source: Boatnerd Archived Photo
