Sneaking in a cigar by the fire before the next storm rolls in tomorrow. Pouring out a glass of Maker's Mark Private Selection All Ranks: By Vets, For Vets Release 002 paired with a Rocky Patel Vintage 2008 Cameroon via the Disney Cruise Line (thanks mom and dad). Revisiting this bottle brings notes of jammy berries, cherries, oak, tobacco, and a long finish. ... Today is National K9 Veteran's Day, so in that spirit, here's a toast to gooddest doggos in the service, past and present. Whether they be unit mascots or working dog teams, they are all a Coastie's best friend. March 13, 1942 was the day k9s officially became members of the US Armed Forces. During WWII, more than 2,000 dogs served in Coast Guard K9 teams as part of the beach patrol. In the 1990s, the USCG employed narcotics detection dogs and post 9/11 USCG K9 teams specialized in explosives detection. Unit mascots have been around since the earliest days of the service and have included some amazing dogs like Sinbad, SPAR, Doc Sunshine, Boomer, Flash, Thor, Loki, and Onyx. So raise a glass to those four-legged Coasties that serve beside us, order a round of chew toys and pupacinos for all with a side of belly rubs. ... “Sinbad was a salty sailor, but he’s not a good sailor. He'll never rate gold hash marks nor good conduct medals. He’s been on report several times, and he’s raised hell in a number of ports. On a few occasions, he has embarrassed the United States government by creating disturbances in foreign zones. Perhaps that's why Coast Guardsmen love Sinbad; he’s as bad as the worst and as good as the best of us.” - Eddie Lloyd, USCG Magazine ... #k9veteransday #uscg #uscoastguard #cigar #CigarAfficionado #pssita #sailorandsticks #cigarsandwhiskey #whiskey #makersmark #WhiskeyNeat #WhiskeyAfficionado #whiskyandhistory #bourbon #quote #quotestagram (at Coastal San Pedro) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpwU6phuA6N/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Pouring out a glass of Hakushu 12 year old single malt Japanese Whisky and smoking an Oliva Serie V Melanio cigar. .... Putting some smoke in the air to remember that on this day, February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt signed executive order 9066 allowing the removal of American citizens deemed a "threat to national security" from the West Coast and into incarceration at camps inland. The order marked the beginning of the forced incarceration of approximately 112,000 Americans of Japanese decent at 10 camps, surrounded by barbed wire, fences, and armed guards. Men, women, and children were given 48 hours notice to vacate their homes and businesses and take only what they could carry to assembly centers, often requisitioned race tracks and fairgrounds, before they were shipped to the relocation camps. From where I sit, I can see Terminal Island where once sat a thriving Japanese fishing community. Two-thirds of those incarcerated were citizens. More than 33,000 Japanese Americans served in the Armed Forces while their familes were behind barbed wire. The order was rescinded when the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that a citizen could not be imprisoned if the government could not prove disloyalty. In fact no Japanese American was ever found guilty of sabotage or espionage. The incarcerated returned to find they had lost everything of their former lives. In some cases, such as seen at the Panama Hotel in Seattle, they never returned, leaving behind trunks and suitcases never to be reclaimed. .... "I still remember the barbed wire fence that confined me. I remember the tall sentry tower with the machine guns pointed at us. I remember the searchlight that followed me when I made the night runs from my barrack to the latrine. But to five-year-old me, I thought it was kind of nice that they'd lit the way for me to pee. I was a child, too young to understand the circumstances of my being there." George Takei .... #rememberanceday #thisdayinhistory #onthisday #cigar #CigarAfficionado #cigarphoto #cigarsmoke #pssita #sailorandsticks #cigarsandwhisky #TapThatAsh #whisky #japanesewhisky #hakushu #whiskyandhistory #whiskyneat #WhiskyAfficionado #quote #quotestagram (at Coastal San Pedro) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co3yWzPL9xA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sipping a glass of FEW Straight Rye while taking a moment to remember the Iroquois Theater Fire on this day 119 years ago on this day, December 30, 1903. An estimated 2,200 packed the "fireproof" theater that day filling all of the available seats and standing in the aisles. 602 people, mostly women and children perished in less than 15 minutes after an arc light caught a piece of muslin curtain on fire at the beginning act 2 of Mr. Bluebeard during the double octet musical number "In The Pale Moonlight". Despite the efforts of the house Fireman to douse them, the flames quickly raced across thousands of yards of highly flammable painted flats in the flys. The house asbestos curtain jammed while it was being lowered, though, since it was mostly wood pulp, it was useless. Eddie Foy, an actor, took the stage to calm the crowd as buring embers rained around him. The crowd began to evacuate and found their way blocked by locked, false or hidden doors and doors that opened inward. The cast and crew fled through the stage doors creating a blast of fresh air to fuel the flames. Others attempting escape found unfinished fire escapes, barred hallways, and othe patrons jammed into dead ends. Fire companies rescue efforts were hampered by an icy, narrow alley and thick smoke that hid their black rescue nets. Ultimately, no one would be held responsible for the disaster though it did lead to the invention of the panic bar triggered firedoor and many changes to building and fire codes. .... "It struck me as I looked out over the crowd that I had never before seen so many women and children in the audience. Even the gallery was full of mothers and children." - Eddie Foy ..... #onthisday #thisdayinhistory #iroquoistheatrefire #chicago #chicagohistory #whiskey #ryewhiskey #fryeday #whiskeylife #WhiskeyNeat #WhiskeyAfficionado #whiskyandhistory (at Coastal San Pedro) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm0dv-gL51k/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Pouring out a glass of Glen Breton Rare a 10 year old single malt whisky from the Glenora Distillery in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Smells of orange and vanilla and tastes of milk chocolate, cherries, lavender, and ginger. I specifically chose this bottle for today. Paired with a Highclere Castle Victorian from Foundation Cigars. .... Putting some smoke in the air to remember the Great Halifax Explosion on this day, December 6, 1917. This remains the most powerful, man-made, non-nuclear explosion in history. The SS Mont-Blanc was fully loaded with 6 million tons of high-explosives, gun cotton, benzol fuel, and picric acid when she entered Halifax Harbor and made her way for Bedford Basin. Meanwhile the SS Imo was heading out. The Imo was departing late and was in a rush. Imo was heading up the wrong side of the channel and moving above the 5 knot harbor speed limit. Mont-Blanc signaled her intentions and Imo responded with opposite intentions. Despite efforts from Mont-Blanc, Imo collided with her and pierced her cargo hold setting her afire. The Mont-Blanc crew jumped ship and she drifted to the Richmond docks still burning. Despite efforts to douse the fire at 9:04 am the Mont-Blanc exploded. The blast killed 1,600 and wounded 9,000 people and leveled everything in a 1.6 mile radius in an instant. The USS Tacoma, at sea passing Halifax was rocked so violently they went to general quarters fearing an attack. Tacoma offered US Marines to patrol the streets to relive Canadian troops. USRC Morrill, at anchor in Dartmouth Cove was among the first to send help ashore. Boston sent a relief train with doctors, medical, and building supplies. .... "Hold up the train. Ammunition ship afire in harbor making for Pier 6 and will explode. Guess this will be my last message. Good-bye boys." - Patrick Vincent Coleman, Canadian Government Railways dispatcher's last message .... #onthisday #greathalifaxexplosion #cigar #CigarLover #CigarAfficionado #cigarphoto #cigarsandwhisky #sailorandsticks #whisky #singlemalt #canadianwhisky #WhiskyAfficionado #WhiskyNeat #whiskyandhistory #quote #quotestagram (at Coastal San Pedro) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl2cxsYL081/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sunset, full moon, Tatuaje Verocú cigar, and Maker's Mark All Ranks: By Vets, For Vets release 002 bourbon I can't think of a better way to end a busy day. This bottle has a long dry finish with notes of orange peel, leather, tobacco, coffee, and wood. .... On the morning of December 7, Honolulu Harbor was quiet as USCGC Taney lulled peacefully tied to pier 6. Nearby cutters Kukui, Reliance, and CG-8 sat at pier 4. At sea near Barbers Point cutter Tiger was on regular patrol when she intercepted a message from the USS Ward claiming they had fired on and destroyed a submarine attempting to gain access to Pearl Harbor. As the Japanese surprise attack on military airfields and the US Navy Pacific Fleet began Tiger took up her wartime station at the mouth of Pearl Harbor. CG-8 picked up the depot keeper from Sand Island as bombs exploded nearby and proceeded, under fire from enemy planes, to Kewalo Basin to prevent vessels from leaving before they were cleared by intelligence. As the 2nd wave of planes appeared Taney answered with her guns at extreme range, breaking up the formations. At Ford Island, USCG LT Frank Erickson, who would later pioneer helicopter flight, was standing watch when the attack began. He took command of the Ford Island Control Tower and its anti-aircraft battery to fight off enemy planes. The attack would leave the Pacific Fleet decimated and more than 2,400 military and civilians killed with and additional 1,178 wounded. .... "We had a grand stand view of the battle. We could see all of Ford Island and the Pearl Harbor area with the ships, the Navy Yard, Hickam, Wheeler and Eva Fields all of which were on fire. Practically all our combat planes were already lost on the ground. Most of the battleships moored along Ford Island were listing badly." - LT Frank Erickson, USCG ..... #pearlharbor #onthisday #thisdayinhistory #cigar #CigarLover #CigarAfficionado #cigarphoto #cigarsnob #cigarlife #cigarsmoke #tatuajecigars #cigarsandwhiskey #sailorandsticks #TapThatAsh #whiskey #makersmark #makersmarkambassador #byvetsforvets #whiskeylife #WhiskeyLover #whiskeyphoto #WhiskeyNeat #whiskyandhistory #whiskeywednesday #quote #quotestagram #history #uscg (at Coastal San Pedro) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl47cQmrFB8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A cold full moon rises over a bottle of 10 year Bib & Tucker paired with a J. London Gold Series cigar. ..... Pouring a toast tonight to the crews of USCG Station Charlevoix, Statiom Plum Island, USCGC Sundew, and USCGC Hollyhock who launched into the teeth of 40 foot waves and 65 mph winds in an attempt to rescue the crew of the SS Carl D. Bradley after she broke in two and sank 12 south of Gull Island in Lake Michigan. The Bradley is the largest wreck in Lake Michigan and sank on this day, November 18, 1958 with the loss of 33 of her 35 crew. The majority of her crew were from Rogers City, MI. The station crews had to turn back or seek shelter that night while the cutters pounded their way to the scene with Sundew arriving five hours after the sinking and the Hollyhock taking seven hours to reach the scene in what the skipper called a "visit to hell". Sundew reported rolling to 55 degrees three times during their fight to the scene with the waves so high that water flooded out the main radio transmitter abaft of the bridge. The Sundew found the Bradly's forward liferaft 15 hours after the sinking with two survivors. An additional crewmember was also found alive but died shortly after. 17 of the crew's bodies were found in lifejackets and brought back to Charlevoix, 15 remain missing to this day. .... I started my Coast Guard career on another 180-ft cutter out of Charlevoix and Sundew is still sailing the lakes out of Duluth, MN as a museum ship. .... “Mayday! Mayday! This is the Carl D. Bradley. Moon rise over Veteran's Day evening and I'm enjoying my favorite cigar, The Tabernacle Havana Seed CT No 142 from Foundation Cigars. This is always a solid stick and I've paired it tonight with the fantastic V5 Bourbon from Smokey Quartz Distillery, a Veteran owned and operated distillery out of Seabrook, NH. Happy Veteran's Day to my fellow vets and a toast to Armistice Day which is observed on this day around the world. .... McGean, Charles S. Price, Issac M. Scott, William B. Davock, Anna S. Minch, Novadoc, and other vessels lost between November 9 and 12 in major storms on the Great Lakes between 1913 and 1975. During the "White Hurricane" of 1913, 12 ships were lost with all hands, more than 250 sailors, an 7 additional ships were completely destroyed while 19 others were driven ashore. The LV-85 was lost with all 6 of her crew while they remained on station to help guide ships to safety. Only the body of her Chief Engineer Charles Butler was ever found. She was raised in 1915, refurbished and served until 1936. In 1940 the Armistice Day Storm claimed 66 sailors, 3 steel freighters and two fish tugs on Lake Michigan. The "Fitz" was lost November 10, 1975 with her crew of 29 on Lake Superior, the largest ship ever lost on the Great Lakes. .... Another Whiskey Wednesday has come and with the news this week o thought today was good time to pull out this bottle of Horse Soldier bourbon and pair it with a Cain Habano. The Horse Soldier bourbon is made by a team of veterans at the American Freedom Distillery in Columbus, Ohio. The team is made up of some of the men who went into Afghanistan shortly after 9/11, the Green Berets who earned the moniker of Horse Soldiers. It also brings to my mind the men of the U.S. Calvary, the original Horse Soldiers, and their more modern brethren the Air Calvary. It reminds me of a brave man I once had the honor to meet, Medal of Honor recipient Lt Col Bruce Crandall. It also makes me think of someone we lost today, Joe Galloway. Galloway is best know for his work on "We Were Soldiers Once...and Young" the story of Lt. Gen Hal Moore and the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley. He is also the only civilian to be awarded the Bronze Star with Combat V by the US Army for actions in combat in Vietnam. .... So tonight I raise a glass to those who fought in Afghanistan for the last 20 years. You did not sacrifice in vain, you gave the best years of your lives and brought hope to some. I also raise a glass to a man who told the tale of those who fought in Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. .... "We who have seen war, will never stop seeing it. Wishing those who celebrate a blessed Passover. For the Passover/Easter weekend I'm kicking off with a bottle of M & H Elements single malt whisky. This sherry cask Kosher whisky comes from Tel Aviv and is an interesting pour. It's not the sherry bomb you'd expect. This has a dry note and flavors of pepper, fruit, and creamy caramel. Interesting pour. Paired the bottle with a Plasencia Reserva Original cigar. .... On this day 110 years ago, April 15, 1912, the world woke to news that the White Star Line's newest ship, the RMS Titanic, had struck an iceberg late on the evening of April 14 and sank in the early morning hours of April 15 with the loss of more than 1,500 passengers and crew. The Cunard liner RMS Carpathia was able to reach the scene and rescue 705 survivors from 20 lifeboats. The sinking lead to major changes in the industry including the establishment or the International Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations and the International Ice Patrol. .... "There was peace and the world had an even tenor to it's way. Nothing was revealed in the morning the trend of which was not known the night before. It seems to me that the disaster about to occur was the event that not only made the world rub it's eyes and awake but woke it with a start keeping it moving at a rapidly accelerating pace ever since with less and less peace, satisfaction and happiness. To my mind the world of today awoke April 15th, 1912." -Jack B. Reflecting with a glass of The Hakushu 12 year old Japanese Single Malt and a Kintsugi cigar from Alec & Bradley. .... I say reflecting because today marks the 80th anniversary of FDR's executive order 9066. This order led to the forced relocation and interment of Japanese, Italian, and German Americans from exclusion zones declared by the War Department. More than 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry were forced from their homes and businesses. Allowed to bring little with them these citizens and residents were incarcerated in remote crude camps until as late as March 1946. This wasn't the first time our country removed and incarcerated ethnic groups we were told to fear, and unfortunately, it also wasn't the last. There are echoes of this national shame still. It can be seen at Manzanra, it can be seen in the luggage still in the basement of the Panama Hotel in Seattle, it can be seen in the 120,000 stories from families who lost so much, and in the legacy of the 442 Regimental Combat Team and the more than 18,000 awards the 100th Infantry Battalion earned in less than two years. This is an anniversary that should never be forgotten since it reminds us how easily we became like the monsters we were fighting and how we turned on our neighbors and fellow citizens because we were told they were the enemy. .... We were American citizens. We were incarcerated by our American government in American internment camps here in the United States. The term 'Japanese internment camp' is both grammatically and factually incorrect. In Chicago, in the O'Leary barn a fire started that would sweep through the heart of the city, 17,500 buildings, leaving a third of the city homeless, and killing more than 300 people. In Peshtigo, WI, a wall of fire driven by gale-force winds swept through the woods and into the town obliterating an area twice the size of Rhode Island and 12 towns. The flames were so fierce the true cost will never be known though the best estimate is 1,200 to 2,500 people. In Michigan the towns of Holland, Manistee, and Port Huron were engulfed along with the woods surrounding them killing between 500 and 1,000 people. It was the "Night America Burned". The fires burned for days until the rains came and they burned themselves out. ... "It was a grand sight but hellish in the extreme; streets, houses, trees, and everything in one grand furnace.
