Titan Sub Disaster: Key Takeaways from US Coast Guard Hearings
The US Coast Guard has held a week-long hearing into the Titan submersible tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of all five aboard during a deep-sea dive to the Titanic wreck. Investigators aim to determine the cause of the implosion and to prevent future similar incidents. Here are the key takeaways from the first week of hearings:
Tumblr media
1. Crew's Final Words: "All Good Here" The last message sent by the crew of the Titan submersible was a brief "All good here." The message was relayed roughly an hour into their descent to the Titanic wreck at 3,346 meters, after which communication was lost. Despite patchy communication, no immediate issues were reported before the tragedy.
2. Witness Recalls the Crew’s Final Moments Renata Rojas, a mission specialist on the surface vessel, recalled the last moments with the crew as they smiled and prepared for their dive. She testified about the emotional shock of losing contact with the sub and described the mission as risky but not unsafe.
3. Whistleblower: Tragedy Was "Inevitable" David Lochridge, a former operations director at OceanGate, revealed that he had raised safety concerns in 2018, years before the accident. He testified that OceanGate overlooked critical issues, such as the use of carbon fiber in the sub's construction, which he believed made the disaster inevitable.
4. New Footage of Titan Wreckage Newly released footage from a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) shows the Titan submersible wreckage scattered on the ocean floor. The footage includes debris like wires, gauges, and parts of the vessel, providing a visual confirmation of the damage.
5. Leading Sub Manufacturer: Titan "Not Ready for Primetime" Patrick Lahey, CEO of Triton, a leading submersible manufacturer, criticized Titan's design and safety measures. After touring the vessel, he expressed concern over its build quality, calling it "amateur-ish" and said it wasn’t sufficiently developed for such deep-sea missions.
The hearings continue as investigators work to provide recommendations and prevent future tragedies.

U.S. Life-Saving Service
I took these pictures at the Maritime Museum in Glen Haven, Michigan. The museum is made up of several buildings on the shore of Lake Michigan in Glen Haven, Michigan, and is part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. In my humble opinion, the displays and interpretive information are first rate.
The U.S. Life-Saving Service dates from 1848; it merged with the Revenue Cutter Service to form the Coast Guard in 1915. For more information, please go here.

Sneaking in a cigar by the fire before the next storm rolls in tomorrow. Pouring out a glass of Maker's Mark Private Selection All Ranks: By Vets, For Vets Release 002 paired with a Rocky Patel Vintage 2008 Cameroon via the Disney Cruise Line (thanks mom and dad). Revisiting this bottle brings notes of jammy berries, cherries, oak, tobacco, and a long finish. ... Today is National K9 Veteran's Day, so in that spirit, here's a toast to gooddest doggos in the service, past and present. Whether they be unit mascots or working dog teams, they are all a Coastie's best friend. March 13, 1942 was the day k9s officially became members of the US Armed Forces. During WWII, more than 2,000 dogs served in Coast Guard K9 teams as part of the beach patrol. In the 1990s, the USCG employed narcotics detection dogs and post 9/11 USCG K9 teams specialized in explosives detection. Unit mascots have been around since the earliest days of the service and have included some amazing dogs like Sinbad, SPAR, Doc Sunshine, Boomer, Flash, Thor, Loki, and Onyx. So raise a glass to those four-legged Coasties that serve beside us, order a round of chew toys and pupacinos for all with a side of belly rubs. ... “Sinbad was a salty sailor, but he’s not a good sailor. He'll never rate gold hash marks nor good conduct medals. He’s been on report several times, and he’s raised hell in a number of ports. On a few occasions, he has embarrassed the United States government by creating disturbances in foreign zones. Perhaps that's why Coast Guardsmen love Sinbad; he’s as bad as the worst and as good as the best of us.” - Eddie Lloyd, USCG Magazine ... #k9veteransday #uscg #uscoastguard #cigar #CigarAfficionado #pssita #sailorandsticks #cigarsandwhiskey #whiskey #makersmark #WhiskeyNeat #WhiskeyAfficionado #whiskyandhistory #bourbon #quote #quotestagram (at Coastal San Pedro) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpwU6phuA6N/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Live Updates: Noises Detected during Search for Missing Titanic Submarine as OceanGate faces safety questions
Tumblr media
On June 21, 2023, the search for the Missing Titanic submarine, which was en route to explore the Titanic wreckage, continued with intensive efforts and various assets involved. The submersible, operated by OceanGate Expeditions, carried five individuals, including British adventurer Hamish Harding, Pakistani father-son duo Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, and Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet . The search area, located off the coast of Newfoundland, posed significant challenges due to the depth of the wreckage site, which is approximately 12,500 feet below the surface . The search operation involved multiple vessels, including the US Coast Guard, Canadian Coast Guard, and a French research ship named Atalante. The Canadian military surveillance aircraft detected underwater noises in the search area, providing hope for the ongoing rescue operation. However, despite extensive search efforts covering over 25,900 square kilometers of sea, no positive results had been found at that time . Conti......... Read the full article

On May 15, 1939, the USS #StLouis left #Hamburg, #Germany with more than 900 #Jewish #refugees trying to escape #Nazi #Germany – all of whom had landing passes for #Cuba & quota numbers permitting entry to the U.S. in three years.
In June of 1939, the St. Louis reached Cuba. But the #Cuban government held the ship at port and made extortionate demands for money (which the Jewish refugees simply did not have).
The St. Louis was forced to leave Cuba, and it began to sail north toward the U.S. #FDR ordered the @uscoastguard
to take all measures to ensure none of the "passengers" reached the U.S. mainland, even if they jumped ship and tried to swim.
The St. Louis docked in #Miami, #Florida, but no one was allowed to disembark.
Desperate passengers sent telegrams directly to FDR pleading for #asylum. FDR did not respond, but the @StateDept did when it wrote back, “passengers must await their turns on the waiting list and qualify for #immigration visas before they may be admissible into the #UnitedStates.”
The #Jews on the St. Louis were forced to return to #Europe.
On June 17, 1939, the St. Louis docked in #Antwerp, #Belgium. Belgium offered to take 214 passengers, the #Netherlands 181, #Britain 287, and #France 224.
By the end of the #Holocaust, the Nazis had murdered nearly all Jews from the St. Louis except those permitted entry to the uninvaded island of Britain.

Foggy Sunday early evenings call for a good cigar and some whiskey. In this case, we have the Prideful Goat 6 year cask strength rye and a Rocky Patel 10th Anniversary box press cigar. There are really nice notes of butterscotch, jam, some dark chocolate, and rye spice. .... So I know there is some kind of annual Hollywood award show tonight, but I'm putting some smoke in the air and raising a glass to a different set of awardees. On Friday, the 47th Joint Culinary Training Exercise at Ft Lee was completed. This multi-service culinary competition challenges teams and individuals from the various services to cook their best against each other in hopes of winning it all to go on to compete against civilian chefs later this year. For the 3rd year in a row Team Coast Guard sliced, diced, and served up a win against all the other competitors bringing home 7 gold, 10 silver, and 5 bronze medals as well as Installation, Chef, and Pastery Chef of the Year, Best in Show for Mobile Kitchen (on Army gear) and Contemporary Food, as well as runner-up Student Team and Cold Food Buffet. Additionally, CS1 Danielle Hughes, CS1 John Toman, and CS1 Jeff Plotz were chosen to join the Army Cullinary Arts Team for the Cullinary Arts Olympics in Germany. Way to go Team Coast Guard!
