I'm not sure if I explained it before in an actual post or just in some tags of previous posts, but I said I can sense and talk to my CCs in my library(that's my SR/WR).

Basically I gave them access outside that 'pocket reality' and their own(because I wanted to give them their own space), and usually they're with me as support. I can sense them and talk to them. Though I hear them mentally. Sometimes I sense their questions and stuff.

A while ago I gave the twins(my CCs are Sun and Moon) limited and temporary access to my script of that reality and they brought their older brother :D! Eclipse is a pain in the ass, but a very endearing one. Scared me the first time when he hid under my bed.

Basically I can't see them physically, but I can see them mentally and sometimes from the corner of my eyes. I can also feel them when they touch me(boy was I startled the first time.) I know I might sound insane cause it's usually all possible until it comes to the reality you're currently in, but it's helped me a lot! It keeps me going and gives me even more motivation to get to the library fully grounded and not just through snippets or consciousness.

Back to the start! Previous Next

You stretch your arms above your head, relishing in the comfort of waking up in an actual bed. You take a look around your new room, spotting the new posters, figures, merch and a cyan squid plushie with a gas mask on it sitting on your desk. You haven’t been living with your team for long, but there are already lots of papers scattered about over the desk, clothing on the floor, and some video games stacked on the desk that make it feel like home. You slip your top on and try to remember what’s supposed to happen next in the story. You’re not sure when Team Blue is supposed to battle Team Purple again, but it should be very soon. You’ve already been sure to be in the square as often as possible for the past day, watching out for them. Today you had to come up with another excuse, but it was getting too hard to come up with anything rational. You take a seat on the couch with a bowl of cereal in hand, and you try to come up with something. The silence doesn’t last long when Leo runs into the room, mostly directing his attention at Tasha.

“Skull’s in the plaza! An influencer got a picture of him today, look!”

You take a quick peek and see the back of the head of an inkling with blue ink that appears to be wearing pilot goggles, along with a blurry shot of Skull. It does look like it was taken today for sure. You tell everyone to get their stuff ready to go out, under the guise that Skull’s someone you look up to or whatever. Well, you’re not wrong, you do look up to him. And you are a fan, just in a different way than most.

You pick up the manual from your desk and shove it in your bag before shrugging it over your shoulder and picking up your weapon. The rest of your team is already at the door waiting for you. You throw your footwear on and you’re out the door. It looks like you made it just in time, catching the last bits of the conversation between Goggles and Skull. You’re glad you live close to the plaza. Moray Towers, huh? This battle was interesting, you’re looking forward to seeing Skull show a little more emotion. He did go through some quick character development, going from a big, scary unbeatable S+ rank player to a lovable dork with a hopeless sense of direction. 

You’re already making your way toward Moray Towers before your team even catches what’s going on. They follow behind you, wondering why you wanted to come to the plaza if you didn’t even want to see Skull. The four of you get comfortable, setting your weapons down, and you pull out your pencil and manual. The battle begins shortly and you quickly take point-form notes on how Skull’s team battles. A few seconds in and he’s already got the whole Blue Team down. You’re still unsure of how Goggles was seriously able to defeat a team with so much skill, but you remember that it’s all about main character powers. The Squid Sisters are heard over the loudspeakers, announcing Skull’s quad kill, and call it Skull’s Territory.

“Hey, Tasha’s territory sounds cooler, don’tchya think?”  Leo wants to up the mood, but he doesn’t realize that you’re perfectly content with Skull winning. Too bad it doesn’t last long.

‘Oh, here comes Skull’s Kraken!’ You lean forward in your seat, never having seen it up close before. You always splatted your opponents right before they could use it, or you would simply splat them so much that they had no time to fill their special gauges. You only got to see them in Splatoon or videos you saw online. Even though you had no real references, you could tell that Skull’s kraken form was bigger than most. Maybe around 1.5x the size if you were to guess. You take a look to the side to see Tasha completely focused on the battle with a smile on her face. She sure is a big fan, huh? Then you remember how rude he was in the beginning of the manga, catching his “Weaklings are such boring opponents,” line. He’ll warm up soon.

Team Blue does their usual shenanigans and the purple team is dumb enough to be grouped together. That seems to be a constant issue between the S4 members, you find. Team Blue finally uses their singular brain cell and uses the inkzooka on Skull, effectively making him back down. Aviators and the rest of the team are nearly back in the center, ready to fight again. You’re disappointed that not one of them stays back for Skull to super jump to to save time. It’s too late now though, since Goggles managed to face Skull at the top of the tower. 

“Show him Goggles, your new special move…!” You notice Leo’s head turn to behind you quickly, recognizing that voice. 

Rider wasn’t saying it loudly, mostly just to himself, but Leo gave away your position right then and there. Rider looks down at Leo, who has the biggest, dorkiest smile on his face.

“Oh my cod, it’s Rider!” Okay, you’re glad that he got to meet one of his idols but you don’t wanna be caught up in this, not right now! You keep your focus trained on the battle, but Leo makes it hard to do so when he grabs your shoulders, shaking you in excitement. Tasha gives him a side-eye, you know it’s not meant to be in a bad way, that’s just how she is. You can see Milo bounce his knee up and down, clearly excited to see Rider too, but not wanting to scare him off with his excessive amounts of talking.

You finally half-heartedly turn to face the Yellow-Green inkling, trying to show the least amount of interest as possible. 

‘I’m just a random fan, is all. Nothing special. It’s not like he’ll recognize me-’

“It’s you again.” 

It wasn’t a question. 

He was confident in what he said. He didn’t sound interested in you more than anyone else, but this proves that someone from the manga knows you.

ethan is an incredible main character, and matthew did an amazing job portraying that lovable dork who has a grasp on reality when it's needed.

I love how Dorohedoro and Made in Abyss (as well as Puella Madoka Magica) are in completely different spectrum compared their artistic styles.

Dorohedoro looks dark, grisly, twisted. Demons, blood, magic, dark magic, mad max-like aesthetic, and kink & horror aesthetic. And yet, everyone is pretty much a darling idiot. The main character is a big doofus sweetheart, there’s lots of comedy and many lovable dorks. They have a baseball playing man sized cockroach called Johnson because why not. It’s a very “general” adventure story that just looks very dark but is sweet and lighthearted. You might have seen this post:

Then we have Made in Abyss. Super cute looking, super adorable, the anime is colored brightly and the kids are so cute! How adorable! Except the story is one of the most twisted and darkest ones I’ve encountered. I was told “Watch Made in Abyss only if you can handle bad things happening to kids”. Oh boy, if that warning wasn’t in its place! I heard from someone here that the comic is even darker and more twisted than the anime - so much that the person telling me this was completely disgusted by it and said it ruined the whole series for them. It’s almost like “This can’t get any worse” and then it does :D While looking cute and super adorable.

As I mentioned, Puella Madoka Magica does this same. Just keeps getting worse and worse, like a nightmare, while looking like a series made for 8yo little girls:

What I want, all you young artists and people thinking you should do things way X because by some weird rules you’re “supposed to” do things X that way, to know this: BULLSHIT.

You want to make an adorable, lighthearted and funny story looking like a horror comic? Go for it!

You want to make super cute and kawaii looking series that is nothing but an agonizing nightmare where all the horrors of the world take place? Go for it!

Rules don’t bound you. Only you bound yourself.

Yoosung

Prince Eric from 'The Little Mermaid'. I can't really put my finger on why exactly did I choose him of all princes for Yoosung. There's just something about him first being saved by Ariel and then returning the favor down the line. Risking his life to save his loved one is definitely something Yoosung would do without any hesitation. Eric's devotion to Ariel is so reminiscent of the way Yoosung is ready to pretty much sacrifice himself to keep MC safe in his own route. Plus, they're both sweethearts!

Zen

Prince Naveen from 'The Princess and the Frog'. While there are clear differences in attitude between them, I couldn't help but think of Naveen the second I got to Zen. Naveen's charisma, charm and his journey to become a better person, both for his own happiness and for those he holds dear is so similar to Zen's own path in life. And hey, they're both so adorably flirty and giddy with their SO! These two would definitely become great buddies. I can imagine them performing together and absolutely wowing the crowd.

Jumin

Kristoff from 'Frozen'. Another odd couple of mine! Still, I think there's a ton of similarities between these two. Both Jumin and Kristoff are pretty reclusive in their nature, but once you get to know them a little better, you can't help but admire the warm and sincere heart hidden underneath the frost. They both had to close themselves up from the rest of the world in order to keep themselves safe. But, it never made them cruel. And they both have a cherished pet that they consider practically their family! The way Ana helps Kristoff become more open to the world is so incredibly similar to Jumin's route and it makes me very happy :)

Saeyoung

Flynn Ryder from 'Tangled'. Yeah, I think that's an obvious choice right there lol. These two share so many similarities it's borderline uncanny. Just tell me that the description of a lovable cunning thief with a heart of gold does not describe Saeyoung to a t. They both got a great sense of humor and the way we slowly learn of Ryder's true caring nature as the trust between him and Rapunzel grows is so reminiscent of the journey that we go through by Saeyoung's side. I just think they're neat.

Jihyun

The Beast from 'The Beauty and the Beast'. I know that this role is usually reserved for Saeran, but my take on it is more of a metaphorical one. I just really like the idea of Jihyun viewing himself as a beast that can only hurt those he holds dear and mess everything up. The way his burdens lay heavy on his exhausted shoulders... how he refuses to let anyone in, both for their own safety and because he thinks that he doesn't deserve that sort of kindness. While the Beast and Jihyun do not share much in terms of attitude, there's something so incredibly beautiful in the way that they both transform, inside and out, as a symbol of their internal growth. They both made some mistakes in their lifetime, but they learned that they deserve to be loved as they are. And I think that's lovely.

Saeran

I'm going with GE Saeran here, since I just don't know enough prince's to pick one for each version of him lol. For Saeran, I pick Prince Charming from 'Cinderella'! Okay, well, if I'm being more precise here, it's Prince Charming from the 'Cinderella 3: A Twist in Time'. This movie has NO right being this good, and it holds a very special place in my heart. There's no deep reason why I associate Prince Charming with Saeran - they're just painfully similar in the way that they behave, and it makes me squeal from delight and crack up all at the same time. Seriously, check out this movie while imagining Saeran in the place of Prince Charming, and you will never unsee it in the best way possible. I love this dork to the moon and back and imagining him being all goofy makes me happy.

Vanderwood

Aladdin from from 'Aladdin'. Again, I just really enjoy their personalities mixed together. Plus, Aladdin is a notorious criminal, which is definitely up Vanderwood's alley. Moreso, I believe there's something so inherently lovely about Aladdin learning to stop trying to pretend someone he isn't, since that only ruined his close relationships in the long run. It was hard for Aladdin to believe that he's worthy of being loved as he is, and his main lesson was exactly that. Vanderwood definitely struggles with their self-worth, which is why I believe that they'd relate to Aladdin's journey a whole lot. Just don't catch them tearing up while watching the movie because they will deny it to the ends of time itself.

He initially typed Like That (h.EELlo) because he was rushing himself to get the texts out. He worried that if he took too long, she'd lose interest in the conversation. But eventually he gets more accustomed with the keypad and only makes typos as often as the average teen. And when he's Not talking with Willow, he likes scrolling through their chat log. Makes him smile. However he cringes an awful lot because he used to be really REALLY bad at typing.

Once he's realized that she's not gonna ghost him if he doesn't answer her immediately he's comfortable enough to take some time to draft what he's gonna say. He even weighs the pros and cons of specific terminology. He's like "should I use this word? It's a big word. Shows her I'm smart and I know big words. Or maybe it'll come across as pretentious. Should I use the word pretentious? It's also a big word and it shows I'm smart but--"

But once they get in The Zone (i.e. a common interest in the usage of plants in magic.) he stops worrying about structuring his texts so much cuz he just gets carried away with all the yammering. She's also yammering. He likes that. Makes him feel less annoying. And he likes to read what she has to say. She's really smart.

(I admire people who have standards and actual wishlists for what they want for Hunter and Willow's relationship in season 3 but listen to me. Listen very carefully. I am starved for them to just have a single goddamn interaction. Hunter called Willow by her name in King's Tide and it was barely audible and it sustained me for weeks. I will take whatever the fuck this show chooses to give me. They could go all the fuck out with fireworks. They could never acknowledge Hunter's crush ever again. Just so long as they INTERACTION. I am starving, for the love of God.)

TMBS Book 1 Brain Dump

~An Embarrassingly Long Post~

I don’t know why I’m writing this or why I’m so determined to do it. Maybe to finally assume my true form and become a mega dork on main, or maybe just for fun!

This is basically a compilation of all the main points running through my head after reading The Mysterious Benedict Society (2007) for the first time. Rather than posting a ton and spamming the tag, everything’s here in one neat package! (hopefully this gets it all out of my system rip)

The Book Itself

Upon acquiring the first three books (don’t judge me pls), I was surprised at just how long they are. Like, they’re still pretty light being paperbacks and all, but these books are hefty lads.

The first book has this Disney+ Original Series circle thing printed on it, which is kind of unfortunate. Regardless, I love the cover illustration and yellow is actually my favorite color :D It made me weirdly quite happy whenever I saw the book lying around in my room

Also, it’s really cute how there’s a letter from Mr. Benedict at the end! (It only reveals that you can find out his first name if you “know the code”, meaning the bit of Morse printed below the summary on the back.) Shock and horror, though, as I realized I’m starting to recognize some of the letters

The Book Itself, for real this time

It’s wonderful how the tone of the book really shone through to the show adaptation. Something about the deliberateness of the aesthetic, from the set designs to the fashion to scene compositions, that really sells that particular style— like it’s very clear that this story is being told to us, rather than one we’re seeing unfold, if that makes sense.

Where that narration style stood out to me the most was the first chapter. We are told (rather than shown) how Reynie gets himself to the point of the second test, and there’s this whole twisty time maneuver for that whole sequence of events that’s really interesting

A super secret fun fact about me is that I wanted to be a writer when I was younger! So this particular balance of show vs. tell is really neat, since it runs counter to my own tendencies. The sheer amount of commas in every sentence is also kind of comforting, since Ahah, I Do That in those few serious-ish attempts at writing lol

Overall this book’s style reminds me a lot of Roald Dahl’s books, which are very nostalgic for me :D The whole “kids are more competent than adults” angle helps a lot too haha

The Characters

Oh boy here’s where I get a little bit critical! Overall I did really like this book!! it’s just that that expresses itself in all this weird “”analysis”” lol

Reynie - much better in the books than in the show

It’s sort of a lukewarm take but I feel like show!Reynie is kind of boring? He doesn’t have a lot going on flaw-wise, and obviously since he’s the protagonist he can’t have too many weird traits or else the kids watching can’t project themselves onto him as easily

(I call it the difference between an aspirational protagonist and a vessel protagonist. Going off of the Roald Dahl vibes, think Matilda vs Charlie. show!Reynie is more of a Charlie)

Thus when we get to see him really struggle with the Whisperer and doubt himself it gives him a lot more dimension, at least in my opinion

It is a federal crime that the white knight scenes were not adapted into the show

Sticky - my son

I’ve long held to no one besides myself and my long suffering sister that Sticky is The Best Member of the Society

He happened to hit a lot of the Bingo squares of Stuff I Like In Characters: glasses, anxious, nice :), kind of a coward but ultimately is there for his friends, etc

For some reason I don’t talk about him nearly as much as you-know-who, but I love him just as dearly

Kate & Constance - I don’t have much to say

Kate is really interesting in this book! I like how we get to see more of her depths, in particular that one passage about her belief that she is invincible being the only thing that keeps her from falling apart? :c

Also her constant fidgeting is relatable lol

Constance is somehow a lot more tolerable in the book. I think I’m just one of those people with no patience for small children, unfortunately lol

(Some of) The Adults

It’s interesting that they had such an offscreen presence for most of the book. Giving them more time was probably one of the stronger changes of the show

However if that decision was made at the expense of the white knight scenes I think the choice should have been clear

I like the way Rhonda and Number Two are written

Milligan always on sad boy hours 😔✊

The “mill again” passage is touching but kind of messes up the pacing of the getaway, at least for me. Maybe I should read it again to make sure I didn’t miss something

Miss Perumal is much better in the show. We see so little of her in the book she doesn’t function well as an emotional anchor for Reynie, imo

The Institute Gang

Jackson and Jillson serve their purpose well, and Martina was surprising to say the least. I like the direction they took her in the show! I can’t imagine how funny it must have been to watch the tetherball subplot come out of nowhere lolol

These sections were written out of sequence, so random tidbit I couldn’t fit in The S.Q. Section: I like how he stumbles over his words. relatable

Mr. Curtain

While I think I know why they decided to not give Curtain the wheelchair in the show, we were totally robbed of Actor Tony Hale’s performance for the reveal during the final confrontation

Speaking of the wheelchair, it’s such a powerful symbol of his need for control or rather, his fear of losing it

The Contrast between him and Mr. Benedict. This point is expanded on in A Funny Parallel

Mr. Benedict

Oh boy, Mr. Benedict… How do I say this

I find it hard to trust Mr. Benedict, unfortunately

I mean to say, I do in the sense that I know he would never hurt the kids, thanks to knowing that a) this is a children’s book series and b) the meta (tumblr) states that he is really nice and lovable and stuff, but seriously. Why do the kids trust him at first?? I probably missed something somewhere

I like to think I’m an optimistic person, but unfortunately I’m also super paranoid. The premise of “a bunch of vulnerable orphans team up with a strange old man” is just so odd to me I don’t know how to explain it

I don’t know!!! I really want to trust Mr. Benedict

One of the strengths of the show is that we get to see him more often, and thus he gets to acknowledge more often that the plan is weird and that he feels really badly for putting the kids in danger and that he’s trustworthy and genuine

But his lack of presence for most of the book just makes him into something of a specter, invisible and unknowable, speaking only in riddles from across the bay

Which is why the white knight scene is so important!! I loved that scene ;-;

Because here’s an actual emotional connection! We can actually see it happening, rather than only being told that it exists

Reynie asking for advice and receiving encouragement, in words that demonstrate that Mr. Benedict actually cares about him and worries about him and agghh

A Funny Parallel

Okay, ready for my biggest brain, hottest take ever??

Mr. Benedict and Mr. Curtain…. are… the same

I mean obviously not entirely, given that one is benevolent and kind and the other is… Mr. Curtain

But seriously. Genius old man seeks out children (mainly orphans) to enact a plan. Said children often end up incredibly devoted to his cause and deeply admire him this is a little flimsy

Undoubtedly that’s intentional and is supposed to show the difference between them, like some kind of cautionary tale? “Let yourself be vulnerable and let others help you, lest you turn eeeeviiillll”

I guess that’s where the aforementioned epic contrast comes in. You get Mr. Curtain, strapped into his wheelchair and hiding behind those mirrored sunglasses, terrified (but unwilling to admit it) of ever showing the tiniest hint of vulnerability, vs. Mr. Benedict, who can let himself fall knowing that someone will catch him :’)

Anyhow I have nothing against the parallels, I just think it’s funny

The S.Q. Section

I’d like to meet the emo angstlord genius who read this book and decided to make SQ into Dr. Curtain’s son. What in the world

Okay I should probably preface this by saying that I absolutely adore both book!S.Q. and show!SQ with all my heart. Somehow, despite being a completely different character in both mediums, he has managed to be one of the best characters in either and certainly one of my favorites (besides Sticky of course) in the entire franchise, despite the fact that I’ve only read the first book/watched the show so far. I am confident in this statement.

But seriously! How?? Why?? I could probably write a whole other essay about why show!SQ is such an interesting character, and the change works so incredibly well. I’m just. Baffled

Okay, focus. book!S.Q. is such a sweetheart, oh my goodness. Like, 100% one of the most endearing characters in the book. Poor guy. I don’t even know where to start!!

He just seems to be a genuinely good guy at heart, despite being technically one of the bad guys. He’s genuinely happy for Reynie and Sticky when they became Messengers and helped Kate when she “fell” and was concerned about Constance when she looked sick and how he was in that meeting with Mr. Curtain and Martina?!!? aaahhhhghgh ;-; he just wants people to be happy TT-TT

Comparing him against literally every character at the Institute is probably what makes him so endearing tbh. When everyone else is so awful to the kids, it really makes him stand out. Like a cheerful little nightlight in the worst, most humid and rank bathroom you’ve ever been in

It’s kind of pointless to theorize about a book series that’s already concluded (I think?) but. Is the implication of S.Q.’s forgetfulness supposed to be that Mr. Curtain used him in brainsweeping experiments somehow? The timeline probably definitely absolutely doesn’t line up but like. How did he get to being a Messenger being the way he is now, given how cutthroat the process is? And then of course Mr. Curtain keeps him around as an Executive because he’s fun to mess with and presumably his loyalty. I’m very curious as to how their relationship develops in the other books, if at all. Those are probably where the seeds of the “let’s make them family” logic were planted

But wouldn’t it be hilarious if the reason we don’t know what “S.Q.” stands for in the books is that he just. Forgot

Another thing that occurred to me. Given that he and the other Executives were Messengers at some point, what were their worst fears? What is S.Q.’s worst fear?? Inquiring minds need to know

One last horrible little anecdote: I was thinking about book!S.Q. while eating breakfast, as one does, and suddenly it hit me.

I want to believe The Author Trenton Lee Stewart had the name for a character, S.Q. Pedalian, and was like, “Hm! What sort of quirky trait should this young fellow have?” Because, of course, in this style of fiction every character has to have at least one cartoonish or otherwise distinguishing trait to stand out in the minds of children. (For instance, Kate has her bucket, Sticky has his glasses, Constance is angry, and Reynie is Emmett from the Lego Movie)

Anyhow, he looks around the room, searching for inspiration. Suddenly he comes across a jumbo box of plastic wrap. Completely innocuous in design, save for one line of text. 300 SQ FT.

Hi! Thank you so much for your message, it really means a lot to me. 

In short: Yes, I am doing okay!

Long version: 

I am doing very okay! Life has changed quite a lot for me over the past couple of months. I defended my thesis and graduated from university in November, which set me on the search for a job :D

I managed to find one and have been working full-time since January 1st. I am really happy with it so far, even though I’ve only gotten to work from home so far. The atmosphere is great, the people are very friendly and I really like the things I get to work on. 

On the personal side of things, I somehow found my very own brown-haired, green-eyed (I swear, pure coincidence) lovable dork. We’ve been together for the past 6 months and as things are going really well, I spend most of my weekends with him. Last month, he moved to a new apartment so I’ve also been busy helping him with that (Moving relationship test: Passed!). 

So all in all, I have been well, but unfortunately this has also left me with little time - and mostly energy - to work on PotA, or to review my Tumblr. But I want to clarify a few things about the Phantom of the Archipelago and its future:

I still absolutely love The Phantom of the Arena/Archipelago, Phantomcup, Astrid, Hamish, and everything else in the story’s universe

I do not plan to abandon the story any time soon

If I ever do abandon the story, it will be because I don’t think I can find the time again to properly work on it. If this happens, I will make a post about it and update the story, and if I can manage, I would like to write a summary of what was supposed to happen from the point I left it at, so everyone can have some closure

The continuous love and support I receive from you, and this community as a whole, is a very big motivator for me to get back to the story. Because I really want to share the rest of what is in my head!

I have one almost-finished chapter still lying around, and plan to publish it soon (hopefully even this weekend)

Updates from that point on will unfortunately be irregular, but I am starting to feel the urge again to write! So I hope I can work on the story more in the near future

With Poopsie, I love how you captured that lovable dork who is super pretty and delicate and so full of life. From the pretty and delicate clothes to her warm and loving home, you nailed it. alright here’s ma thoughts on that flick I mentioned

we hatewatched a*my of the dead because we were CONVINCED “zombies in las vegas” would be an impossible concept to screw up, but in so assuming we obviously invoked a holy wager with the universe and got reminded, once again, that hoping for improvement from someone who’s dependably put out bad art is never a wise choice 😐

but we were honestly kinda roped in by the marketing??? and expected a goofy fast-paced flick with the odd traditional undead metaphor thrown in, framing some sort of relationship drama maybe or hell even nothing at all! we’d have taken pure indulgent storytelling, idk italian job with zombies in las vegas, I don’t know fucking anything but??? whatever this was???? spoilers below for it is time for One Of My Rants

I mean the main reason I really want to write all this and complain. this film here probably has the most unappealing cinematography I have ever experienced in my life and that is saying something. who the fuck signed off on that CONSTANT shallow-ass depth of field that imprisons your eyeline and turns every shot into bokeh paste???? and I mean every shot almost!!!! I promise if you think I am overreacting just throw a dart at the seek bar and watch twenty seconds from wherever it lands. it is horrifying to look at. at least it gave my girlfriend a good visual shorthand for what it’s like when I lose my glasses

why was sean spicer in this movie. did they pay him to be here. was sean spicer paid hollywood money for his scene in this film because fuck everyone who was involved in that decision

the legitimately baffling hints at the extraterrestrial origins of the infection that went absolutely nowhere and had no dramatic or plot-level bearing. we love to see the franchise sprouts fellas

yet another big budget waste of everything hiroyuki sanada has to offer. and bautista too I guess? I like him but man was this an odd career move

what was the crux of his conflict/resolution with his daughter btw. I understand it was rooted in miscommunication over their forms of grief irt mom but uhh… it was all rather clunky and didn’t land for me. I tried I really tried to buy in but something was wrong fundamentally with the groundwork there, it did not click and their catharsis felt unearned. I know there’s massive amounts of tragic baggage being projected there from the author so I’m not slapping any judgment down really;

but again it would be an easy thing to wave off if they just had a vibrant cast of lovable simpletons with good chemistry and the kinetic sense of plotting the trailers promised (and this premise never discounts good drama, either). but instead it was just two and a half (!) hours of meandering into situations the filmmaking instincts had no idea how to flow in and out of

to wit. a very simple key ingredient missing from fully turning lip service sympathy for main uruk hai dude into actual empathy that would generate meaningful conflict with hero family would be to spend a bit more time articulating what he internally wanted the most. because he was obviously trying to do something here with pointed agenda. a family, to have kids, build a caste system, save his wife’s head, return to his planet??? all of these could represent the bigger context in his psychology that spurred his vengeance but none of them are dramatically emphasized long enough for you to cheer him on. Articulating interiority of a mute character is pretty doable with deft cinema language, just gotta linger and hold a shot here and there for a few seconds, frame as his POV, donezo. I know this is also one of those like. “who cares” moments but the movie does, very evidently so, in making this guy an actual character. you can kinda piece it together and create a framework of sympathy for him, sure, but then again he ultimately becomes a foil to be killed and not defeated, so. I dont like complaining about CGI (honestly) but so much of it in modern movies can achieve higher fidelity if the animation is simply subdued. Do not overengineer and over-apply 2D cell methodologies and kinematics to each tiny twitch and movement in a hyper 3D model and I promise you. it will look a thousand times more natural. look at thanos in those last two movies. your rendering and detail are absolutely perfect with the tiger you just have to let stuff sit instead of constantly simulating swaying hair strands and firing off all facial muscles at once. great moment at one point where makeup zombie horse and CG zombie tiger are both in one shot together and just by unnecessary amounts of movement alone you can tell who doesn’t belong. again; detail, rendering, compositing, lighting, all picture-perfect; but y’all just gotta let the animation breathe sometimes, and chill it out
