SUPER sorry for the delay, I had an all weekend event that kept me from answering all these and I've been desperate to get back here the entire time asdfghjkl; TYSM for indulging me in my Az yapping & TYSM for asking! ANYWHOO, Under The Cut are the first of my asks finally answered !!! 🥰

🌸 Does your Rook have any siblings or close friends they see as such? Where are they during the events of Veilguard?

Rook doesn't have any siblings, he was an only kid growing up much to his dismay. He always wanted siblings so he'd have some form of companionship when he was younger but his parents weren't intending on kids at all till Az came into the picture. They didn't hate kids or anything just they never really planned on it, but when Rook's father found him in the middle of the battlefield in Ventus he was so upset at the idea of a kid alone in the middle of war that he took him home. Rooks mother wasn't ecstatic about the idea but warmed up to him pretty quickly after a few days when Rook wouldn't stop clinging to her like glue and she kind of fell in love with how sweet he was.

Az actually became friends with Tarquin before the events of Veilguard. They both bonded over sarcasm, their inability to make friends with others very well & the whole being trans men thing. The pair started to get decently close & at one point actually got a lil too drunk & had a one night stand just before Rook got sent to work with Varric for a bit.

So, when Az returns it's a little weird for them both after the hook up and then not seeing each other for a year or so, though it returns to friendly pretty quick after Rook realises Tarquin's developed a thing for Ashur while Rook was away and starts teasing him about it which does eventually backfire when Tarquin realises Az has a thing for Emmrich and returns the favour.

🌼 If someone was to ask Spite what Rook smells like, what would he say? Anxiety, Lavender {soap}, ashes {from incense} & once Az starts to take a shine to Emmrich hints of Lilac starts to join the mix. {He's totally not trying to attract Emm's attention with a new Lilac beard oil, not at allllll~} 🥀 What figure from Rook’s personal past would be added to the regret prison?

His mother, his father and the Qunari family friend I've mentioned once or twice here... for many reasons lmfao

Hi Heart! I have a bit of a random question, feel free not to answer it if you don't want to, but basically I've heard someone say that in Kingdom Hearts half of the characters are either Xehanort or Sora, and... is that true??? How many Soras are there?

I know of like three (base Sora, Roxas, and Data Sora) but like, isn't Xion a Sora? Is Ventus part Sora??? Vanitas??????

Let me explain:

Simply put: In a way that's true, yes. Half the characters are Xehanort (in one way or another) and the other half are Sora (in one way or another) and there's a very small collection of characters that are neither (Aqua, Axel, Kairi, most of the ux characters, (maybe) Naminè and all the final fantasy and Disney characters (those come to mind right now)).

The three Soras you mentioned are all canonically a variation of Sora (Base Sora IS Sora, Roxas is Sora's nobody, which is what remains after a person becomes a heartless, and Data-Sora is a digital version of Sora (mostly) made by Mickey, Donald and Goofy). Xion is... a bit more complicated. She was originally a replica (basically a robot) created to copy Roxas' powers but as the two spent time together, she started unkowingly absorbing Sora's memories through Roxas, which forged a connection between her and Sora and gave her a sense of identity and even a face (Before that she didn't seem to have any and was wearing a hood to cover that. Also that's where the trans Xion symbolism/fanon came from. In game she started out as an "it" before basically becoming a "her").

Now, regarding Ventus and Vanitas: I mentioned it before I think, but Vanitas was created after Xehanort tore him out of Ventus, splitting one person into two, one of pure light and one of pure darkness. The process tho, left Ventus way too damaged and Xehanort assumed he would die so he took him to Sora's home-world, Destiny Islands, thinking he would peacefully pass away. That night tho, Sora was born and basically met Ventus in the edge of life and death and joined hearts with him to keep him alive. The two made a connection since and it's thanks to that connection Ven survived that and the end of bbs. Vanitas connects to Sora mostly through Ventus, but they share a bit of connection too. When Sora and Ven connected, Vanitas felt it too and thanks to that, his face changed to look like Sora's (prior to that it was mentioned in the bbs novel to be pure black with big red eyes).

General opinion: I’d say season 1 Dan will forever be my fave. He’s a little shithead kid who gets the bomb dropped on him and he has to start reevaluating how he looks at the other people around him, but that starts to falter in the later seasons where he just becomes the stereotypical hero who gets all the buffs and does no wrong, which does his character such a disservice. I honestly like that he was such a dick in the beginning bc that’s how most kids are, but the point is they learn through meeting other people and experiencing shit. We were robbed of that for Dan after season 1 IMO. But overall he’s fine ig.

Marucho:

Gender: reads as a boy to me personally, now that I think ab it him being a trans guy is so real. Short trans kings unite 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

He remembers very little just that Yoel tried to keep them together and that he was scared of being separated from his older brother. ❖ While Yoel became the poster boy for health supplements, Ven became the spoke person for their new line of mental health medications due to having general anxiety disorder and depression. He struggles with guilt because everyone works so hard to help them be happy right? ❖ He isn't aware of the fact he's on high level dosage, specifically one called Bliss, that keeps him in an almost constant state of relaxation and submission ❖ When he was 8 he came out as trans, it was a huge publicity stunt over how accepting the company is about it (rainbow capitalism lives on). While the attention wasn't terrible it was still unnerving to have so many people aware of his life. ❖ He does think of Josh as his dad and has slipped up when calling him that, even feeling proud that his middle name is Josh's surname. Utena McCormick and Imogen Griffiths work as part of the PR team and security, though over the years they became like family to Yoel and Ven. ❖ When he was 26, he was in a car crash after his friend's Yag's birthday party. The medications he was on had had a bad reaction to the alcohol and drugs he'd taken while partying. Unable to emotionally regulate properly during the comedown, he crashed the car, Yag didn't make it and Ven was out for a month. ❖ Waking up he immediately asked about Asuka and Yag who had been in the car with him. Despite Josh's protests Yoel told him the truth, which Ven was unable to handle. Having a severe mental breakdown, the decision by then had already been made by Yag's father to have Yag remade and having Ven like this wouldn't work. ❖ Despite objections from all close to him, eventually Josh convinced Yoel it be better for Ven to just forget that night. After a series of drugs and forced therapy, they weren't able to make him completely forget, but they could make him remember that night differently. Asuka had been driving, and it was lucky no one had gotten seriously hurt, after all Yag wasn't dead, Ven had simply been too out of it after waking from a coma. ❖ Going against the schedule and decisions the board makes for him, now fills Ven with anxiety and dread he can't fully explain. Though he's quick to take his medication when this happens, preferring to be happy and go lucky over moody. Unknown to him, his family are working against the board to try and lower his dosage to try and free him little by little from their control.

robot/android characters/characters placed in robotic or artificial bodies have always resonated so hard with us but i'm starting to realize some things. rambling incoming -- spirituality, plurality, dysphoria, selfhood, etc.

i think we've always viewed our selfhood and our physical body as two separate Things. or at least, since Van and i became the de facto hosts some time in early high school. we've always considered our Body as just a container for our Selves. it's also worth noting that even in early childhood, we (or, the original host) had gender dysphoria. not sure if the "container" philosophy was always there tho.

i think that really set us up to be fascinated with artificial characters. i mean, don't get me wrong. robotic and android characters would be cool as hell regardless. but there's like...an extra layer to it.

Alphonse Elric (FMA) -- not a robotic character, but a human soul bound to an artificial body. he is very vocal about this Not being his body, and feeling out of place in it. this reads to us both literally, and also as a kind of trans allegory. sometimes we think about, what if his spirit had been bound to Ed's body instead, in a sort of system-adjacent sort of way.

characters like Boothill (HSR) or Masked Man (MOTHER 3), who were originally human, but so much of their bodies have been replaced with machinery that it becomes almost a Ship of Theseus situation. but their original spirits/souls are still in there. just housed in a casing that doesn't resemble the original. i don't know if Boothill expeesses any Feelings™ about this in canon. i'm SURE Masked Man would, given a chance to actually show it before the curtain falls.

characters like Adachi Rei (UTAU) or Scaramouche (Genshin), who were artificial constructs from the start, but i believe at some point within their creation and the lovingness of their crafting, a sense of "self" or perhaps a spirit was imbued in them, despite not starting with a human body. Scara's whole "not having a heart" thing and his pursuit for one to give him meaning. he feels like he, or perhaps his body, is missing a key piece. dysmorphia.

NieR: Automata, where the YoRHa units' consciousnesses can be uploaded and downloaded into new artificial bodies while still maintaining the core self (up to a certain point). and exploring that.

hell, Vanitas (KH) could count as artificial, in the way that he was extracted from Ventus' heart. and the two of them combining into Ventus-Vanitas. really, the concept of Nobodies as a whole, especially in KH3, feels like an illustration of the disconnect between self and body, and would be so interesting to explore from a lens of body dysmorphia/dysphoria too.

i don't know. the disconnect between Body and Self is just such a resonating concept to us, as a system where none of the members really identify with the body we're in at all. so applying it to robots/androids/etc... androids with a distinct sense of selfhood... androids with body dysmorphia as an allegory for dysphoria...... androids with multiple souls bound to one body............ also androids etc are cool as shit

personality/design/overall character notes and musings:

- his shoes btw are still Huge instead of siffrins little heels. hes still got those big ol sneakers because its so funny come ON

- sora is generally MUCH more smiley, especially when the loops start getting rough? its more likely to see him smiling through it ("no sad faces!") than the neutral blankness siffrin leaned towards at times during the last few acts.

- expanding on that, before and during the early loops sora has way more of a natural range of expression than further along, i imagine in a situation like a TIME LOOP its more of the Everything Is Fine Im Going To Save Everyone With A Grin On My Face No Matter What thing he only somewhat frequently dips into in canon, the circumstances call for it!

- im choosing the kh3 versions of the characters for a specific reason too. riku's 'change' as isabeau leans more towards his change in attitude and sense of self over kh1 to kh3 rather than being trans (hes still trans tho in my heart!)

- riku serves the same narrative purpose as isabeau but deviates mostly on personality. as for backstory im choosing not to think about the childhood friends aspect of sora/riku/kairi in this au because it hurts my head with the implications. idk man

- i do want to keep the ex-defender lore though, a more isat appropriate version of riku's working with the bad guys thing i guess?

- mirabelle and kairi are so perfect for eachother i dont think i need to explain much, but kairis princess of light status transfers over to mirabelles (not quite) chosen one status, pretty much one to one

- roxas as loop is a little less joshua twewy as is the nature OF roxas and has a bit more of an anger simmering underneath the surface thing? but overall he treats sora similarly to how he teases axel in 358 (the closest analogue i could find) and, just like loop, is extremely conflicted but Wanting to help and make sure what happened to him doesn't happen again

- im unsure if i want roxas' original party to have xion and axel in it (a la the minor changes between sasasap and isat), but trust. axel would be odile ♡♡♡ you know he'd serve CUNTTT (xion/mira, hayner/isabeau axel/odile ???/bonnie ? maybe another twilight town character? feels wrong to seperate that trio!)

- also the shape of roxasloops head is in the shape of his hair because of course

- im still extremely iffy on aqua odile and ventus bonnie but aqua feels less iffy mostly due to the more skilled master status she originally has, which transfers well to her being a craft Beast just like odile.

- i also think that aqua is a really good parallel to sora, just like how odile is quite similar to siffrin in a lot of ways

- odiles glasses chain are earrings for her btw

- im still not sure on ventus though. especially with the age thing. im also worried about the facial similarities thing with roxas however i do think the canon ventus healing within soras heart (which time will tell how THAT turned out for sora) can transfer well to sora losing an eye to protect ventus

- plus not to mention ventus' dynamic with aqua (terra is also in petronille's place - think his xehanort thing but instead of that its getting frozen in time)

- sora also doesnt have an eye patch. it didnt feel right for the design. i changed which eye and also how its hidden (by his squenix bangs) to accomodate that

- i genuinely wholeheartedly wish i could put donald and goofy in this au. i could not think of a way to do it. im kinda sad about it. (mayhaps the broken doll siffrin finds are old donald and goofy plushies for sora...!)

Queer Kingdom Hearts Headcanons:

(Just my personal ones. Feel free to share yours 😊)

Sora: Pan and proud (but loves Riku & Kairi the most). This boy was born to love everyone, and he sure does.

Riku: Gay and Catholic. You don't spend years "battling" then "accepting" the "Darkness within you" if you're straight. Has such a big crush on Sora that he became Sora's Dream Eater.

Kairi: Nonbinary. Nomura based Kairi off of Utada, and Utada is nb, so they're nb too. Disney please let this be canon.

Roxas: Bisexual. He has Sora's love for everyone but doesn't know why or what that means, then accepts it and gets to weild two Keyblades.

Naminé: Asexual, but hella into romance. I mean, she literally draws all her ships of her friends.

Xion: TRANS. Transgirl 10,000%. Even before I knew really what transgender meant I knew Xion's character arc had something to do with gender.

Lea: Gay. Can drive a car but can't do math at all. Married Ïsa the second they turned legal age.

Ïsa: Gay. Excellent at mathematics, but doesn't drive at all. Made Lea propose because he didn't want to get his pants dirty by kneeling.

Terra: Doesn't really know what a sexuality is, but loves Aqua with all his heart. Seriously, nobody gave this boy "the talk".

Aqua: Bisexual, but only has eyes for Terra (morosexual). Look, Terraqua is my OTP and I will fight you on this.

Ventus: Questioning, because Ven just never knows what's going on.

Vanitas: Aromantic + Asexual and he believes that makes him better than you.

Eraqus: Gay. Fell in love with Xehanort at first sight and hasn't been able to see any red flags since.

Xehanort: Gay. Gay gay homosexual gay. Every aspect of Nort is queer. Player Character from Union X? Gay too.

Organization XIII: Literally one of the requirements is being queer. Xemnas' dream was to have a member for every possible gender & sexuality.

The Foretellers: The token Problematic Straights of the franchise. Their conflict came because they were upset everyone else got to go to Pride. Ava was an ally, though.

The Dandelion Leaders: Now these kids were queer. Ava also wanted one for every gender/sexuality, but she could only remember LGBT.

i am once again grumpy that. roxas and ventus ended up being separate people. like, i get why it is the way it is. “i am me, nobody else” blah blah. people liked roxas way too much as an independent character for him to be “overwritten” with ventus. i also get that roxas’s story was written before ventus’s. this is just me being an editor and pointing to pieces of a story that has been presented to me and suggesting ways they could be swapped around to improve cohesion and the overall message. this is what i fucking do.

okay so. what would an explanation for roxas-as-ventus look like? pretty simple, really. for kingdom hearts, anyway. sora stabs himself, yeeting out kairi’s heart, his own, a “copy” of himself in the usual form of a nobody, AND ventus’s heart. ventus and the copy wake up in the same body, ventus with amnesia (again) and only able to draw upon the vague memories that would have allowed sora’s nobody to form a consciousness, if it weren’t for ventus’s already formed presence to take command.

and then we have xion. designed to draw out the memories of sora within “roxas” and make them her own. which she does. and as a result, in this situation, xion would be the closest approximation of sora’s “proper” nobody. why is she a girl? uhhhh she’s trans, duh. we fucking been knew. why does she look like kairi to the few people who actually believe in her as a person enough to see her preferred form? that’s the female face most present in sora’s memory.

i want to stress that this alone would change effectively fuck all about kh2 or days. i mean, i personally would let xion unwillingly win that final battle and take roxas’s place as sora’s nobody- and i did literally write that specific AU concept out as a full fic- but really, no changes are necessary until kh3, and even then, not many. hell, the “i am me, nobody else” exchange could still happen, given as ventus-as-roxas would 1. still be entirely correct and 2. already have sora’s memories back at that point.

so what does this accomplish? well, let’s see. in kh appearance is tied strongly to identity, and it’s pretty fucking weird for these two characters to be identical and it to pass with only minor comment. you’d have ventus-as-roxas’s arc mean one thing, and xion’s mean another, whereas now xion’s arc is basically roxas’s again but bass boosted and with a trans flag palette. honestly, just give that set of themes to xion, she does it way better. it’d dramatically increase the ties between the various trios, giving them more reasons to interact and care about each other. ventus would have someone to interact with on his level, who knew him as himself rather than as aqua and terra’s wayward little brother.

anyway terra is ven's positive masculine figure and ven can talk to him about his insecurities in a way he can't talk with aqua about. terra always reassures him. things like "that's not because you're trans, cis men go through that too"

vanitas is trans like ven and understands him in a way no one else can, and vanitas as a strong badass trans man figure in ven's life helps him overcome his insecurities about being trans and being masculine/strong enough

[OLD/DRAFT POST] Theory on why Xion and Naminé are girls

Okay i guess I’m posting some old drafts :P!

Hmmmm so kinda trans / gender theory about Sora and his heart mates, specifically Naminé and Xion. A lot of ppl headcanon that someone in the Sortas has to be trans because if they were all cis how would they be different genders even with all the wildness of Kingdom Hearts logic and while you can definitely say it’s either because of Sora’s memories of Kairi that influenced Xion and Naminé or that they were truly able to become their own person despite the body they came from (this is still trans coded btw), I wanna bring up a different possibility; what if Naminé and Xion are girls because of Sora?

This is still a trans headcanon technically but it’s not as simple as “one of them is trans so they got the opposite,” I wanted to go a little deeper than that. So for the sake of this theory let’s say Sora’s heart is divided into two parts; masculine and feminine. This is a common though process in real life about people too, whether you agree with it or not. It’s thought that everyone has a masculine side and a feminine side to them and some people even think that there is a neutral side as well. A lot of trans people actually embrace this idea as well as the fact that there is not cut and dry and you can change between your masculinity, femininity, and neutrality throughout your life or even day by day and this leads to such identity as gender fluidity and nonbinary.

So say Sora’s heart is like this. What if it’s possible that because of the pieces of Sora Naminé and Xion took, their gender was influenced like this. And you might be like, “well, duh, obviously if they took pieces of Kairi from Sora it’s still the same thing and it obviously made them girls” but that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying what if the actual pieces of Sora they took were more feminine pieces of him and who he is, not that the pieces that they took had anything to do with Kairi. Classification of what is feminine and masculine to someone is entirely unique to every individual and there’s no real logic to it besides what makes sense to you. So who’s to say Sora didn’t classify his more precious and personal memories, what Xion has, as feminine? And maybe this influenced Xion because maybe Sora feels more feminine around Kairi. With Naminé it’s a little trickier since she literally came from his body and not memory, but maybe Sora in general just thinks of himself as feminine and thus that was passed on to Naminé and since the Nobody process is very “clean” and straight to the point, maybe Xion and Naminé are more “filtered” versions of Sora’s feelings. What if the process of becoming a Nobody goes to the root of the person depending on what kind of Nobody is being created? And we can say this is possible because with Sora having three different Nobodies with entirely unique personalities and ways of existing, clearly it wasn’t the exact same process every time. And maybe for some reason with Xion and Naminé it latched onto the femininity of Sora to create them. Naminé is also Kairi’s Nobody so if you want to explain it that way for her you can but with Xion she’s always been a unique case and I think it makes sense for her to be a girl (or nonbinary, which a lot of people headcanon her as) if she was taken from the more feminine parts of Sora.

And since I talked about Xion and Naminé I have to talk about Roxas and the other Nobodies as well to back up my theory. Maybe at his core Sora feels masculine (which can still be based in a trans headcanon or not because who cares Sora is trans!!!) and that’s why Roxas, who seems to be a Nobody closer to his Original, is masculine. But we can’t forget that Ventus was also in Sora’s heart and had direct influence over the creation of Roxas, so what if that’s why Roxas is what would traditionally be considered masculine? It’s canon that Roxas’ heart and emotions at the foundation came from Sora but who’s to say if they’re masculine or feminine or even neither of those at all? Sure, on the outside Roxas is presented as masculine but no one in The Castle That Never Was is doing lessons on gender theory, so we don’t know how Roxas would consider himself on the inside. He probably wouldn’t even really understand what masculinity or femininity is and neither would Xion or Naminé and that could be why there’s no big issue about those two being different from Sora (which I’m glad no one makes a big deal out of it in canon I promise). We have no clue what Sora’s “true” Nobody would look like, meaning a Nobody without the influence of someone else’s heart or memories of someone else being used to create them, because of how Sora’s life has gone holding different people’s hearts but I think it’s safe to say that since Sora is constantly the exception to things that are supposed to be straight forward in the KH universe, even if he had a Nobody without the help of others being used to make them his “true” Nobody would probably still look different than him and I think this is because Sora’s heart is so strong it can literally defy the rules and do whatever it wants.
