i am complaining here instead of in the Instagram comments because... non-anonymous social media are the absolute worst. Unfortunately, it bears repeating:
Vegan and sustainable are NOT synonymous!!!!!
Plastic shoes are never going to be more sustainable than real leather shoes!! Plastic clothes shedding micro plastic fibers are not more sustainable than wool!!! And by the way, wool!! is!!! amazing!!
Yes, eating less meat reduces your environmental impact. But you know what reduces your environmental impact even more?
Not wearing plastic as clothes.

Never ask pro animal leather people how it's made and what its actual environmental impact is, they will explode and their heads will fall off

Taking that "it's plastic" meme away from Tumblr until we've all done enough research to know that it doesn't matter which fabric we overconsume and that they're all going to cause environmental destruction if we don't take action to reduce consumption and business/corporation waste.

i really want the La Femme en Noir CPeak inspired bag but idk how to justify $90 for plastic 😭
That's my issue with a lot of alternative fashion collections. Like, I get it; the employees have to make a living wage and contract with decent factories. But...it's plastic (call it what you will: polyester, manmade materials, "vegan leather," etc.). Not designed to last in the form in which you purchased it, or even really to be repairable; often not breathable or comfortable, for clothing. Terrible for the environment, too- though I'm aware many natural materials also have environmental production issues, synthetics combine those WITH the other issues mentioned above. It's just not worth the investment.
(Most companies that DO make 100% natural-material garments and accessories have more of a Floaty Beige Linen Minimalist aesthetic, which. Grrr. What's a girl to do to get non-plastic Victorian Goth clothing she doesn't have to make herself?)
(Also the Femme en Noir collection looks very basic, pared-down, and poorly-fitted for a line of pricey garments based on a movie with legendarily lavish costumes. They couldn't at least slap some trim on more of the pieces based on Edith's and Lucille's dazzling gowns? But that's another conversation.)

people just love to appropriate poverty struggles and classicism when they are challenged on their own consumption habits.
veganism is bad because some people live in food deserts (even though they don't)
no one can critizise fast fashion and ultra consumption of clothing because it's just so classist to say we shouldn't support slave labor (ignoring the fact that "poor" people are not buying 70 new items of clothing a year)
framing the demand for fundamental change, and the actions supporting it as intolerant as those horrible existing systems, because accountability is scary, and changing your lifestyle is hard.
if you cannot make a certain change right now, that's ok. activism groups largely know and account for that. but you should ask yourself: "can i actually not do this? or am i just unwilling to give up a priviledge i have?" because there is a difference

at a certain point some people need to realise it’s not enough. they need to realise that they should feel some slight guilt for how much useless things they consume or how much plastic they throw out or how much meat or dairy they eat. at a point you have to look in the mirror and actually ask yourself if it’s necessary. capitalism is an evil system that thrives off of your human condition to feel guilt for your actions. it wants you to feel like the problem. however, that doesn’t execute individual responsibility. that doesn’t mean you don’t have to try. you are responsible for your actions and frankly if you don’t feel a bit bad about wasting money on something harmful, that’s concerning. you don’t get to say ‘no ethical consumption under capitalism’ and then do exactly what capitalism wants you to do. you should feel bad for unnecessarily consuming unethical products because you have a responsibility to be kind to others, not because you’re responsible for climate change and so on. you have a duty to give a fuck about others

There's this subculture of Tumblr users who are a variant of neo hippies who have come to the conclusion that living a natural life is important but they've also swallowed the propaganda of animal ag corps whole and the end result is this fascinating ideology where they think that you should buy all your food locally and plastics-free, your clothes should be made only out of natural bio-degradable materials (which includes leather, somehow) but like you know that none of them actually live like that and if you talk about reducing the overall consumption of animal products, something that experts have been saying for decades will be necessary if we want to still have a liveable planet in the future, they will then rush to tell you about poverty and food deserts and disability and lack of time and money and access to basic vegetables, when they've just been acting like everyone who's ever bought a pullover made of polyester instead of real sheep's wool is single-handedly putting micro plastics into babies' blood.
