Fantasic yes thank you @mt07131 It should be noted I am taking the hottest bubble bath of my entire life while I'm typing this and my skin is the color of Mr Krabs. (these are all cheeses that I have had before so my opinion of each is extremely biased)
We're starting with Neve. I know what you're thinking 'our dear detective has a food pyramid made solely out of the menu of a back alley chippy, obviously she's Kraft cheese or cheese whiz' and you are incorrect. Sit on the floor beside me while I take my bubble bath, we're going on a cheese discovery hand in soapy hand
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Neve is specifically a combination of the two cheeses that are in these bad boys that you can find at Walmart for $15. With enough coffee and distractions you can live off these for an entire week. Each piece of cheese is about the size of a quarter, they're powdery, they don't melt well, and the only reason it's in your fridge is that someone brought it to the potluck and no one else ate any of it. We're ignoring the rest of the platter this is only about cheese.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Harding is a fried halloumi stick. It's squeaky cheese that is sooo good when it's melted and somehow still in stick form. The first time an only time I’ve had it was when I lived in the UK. A little cheeky Nandos with Harding? Come on now she's the one suggesting it. This woman eats ham and jam slams, she's eating cold hallumi (bad salty brick ew ew nasty), Taash's first complaint if they ever lived together that would be that they could hear her eating the leftovers right out of the fridge at 3am cause it's squeaking so damn loud while she's chewing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bellara is the giant babybel. Pictures don't do it justice and the absolute glee of taking off the little jacket before you bite into it like a peach? Undescribable. There's not a doubt in my mind that this woman would collect the wax and leave it in a clump on her bookshelf where she would repeatedly tell you she's gonna do something with it. And yet it grows ever larger with every giant babybel. She's the small ones too but those are somehow worse because she just eats the entire bag of them the second she gets home (not that I do that every time or anything haha dont look in my trash rn)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Davrin is, without a doubt, apple smoked cheddar either from Wisconsin or Lancashire, there's no in between. Once this cheese is in your life you will be fundamentally changed as a person and you can never go back to the way you were. No other cheese holds the same richness and warmth as apple smoked cheddar (either from Wisconsin or Lancashire) It has like this sweetness from the milk in it that's balanced out with the smokiness of paprika. Davrin's bringing this to the cookout and you're going to thank him for putting it on your burger at least four times
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucanis is Fulvi Pecorino Romano (yes it is Italian why do you ask) This is some of the most expensive cheese I've ever had which is perfect for the man who's offering to pay Harding 6,000 gold to stand around while he kills somebody and then asks if that's too low of an amount when she's speechless. This Romano is made from milk taken from a single herd of sheep that live just outside the city of Rome. It's got this a grainy, crumbly texture that I don't think I'll have anything like again. (I had it at a preview night for this movie I worked on for redacted, I think there was caviar there too it was insane)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emmrich my sweet vegetarian (and vegan? idk) is Climax Blue cheese. It's plant-based blue cheese, streaked with a natural and flavorful blue-green veining. It is well-rounded, with a creamy, fudgy texture, and with fruity and earthy notes balanced by a warm peppery finish. It's made out of coconut milk instead of animal milk and it's got pumpkin seeds in it somehow. I'm not vegan but my best friend is and she brought me this one time from her work and I ate it all in about 20 minutes. Excellent with wine and those really thin tiny crackers, makes you feel the good kind of fancy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taash is ghost pepper and fried onion cheddar cheese. Never been hurt by food the way I was hurt the second this touched my tongue. And the cool thing about it is it's also dairy free, and substitutes milk with hemp. The heat from the ghost peppers builds and mingles with the burst from the fried onions and each wheel is aged in a cheese specific cave before it's packaged. It also has that good glowy classic melty cheese flow when it gets hot. If you're like me and you are white people spicy smelling this alone will hurt you

Note
I ate a vegan burger. I could taste the difference but I was surprised how similar it was to a real burger.
fascinating. I almost never eat burgers and would never willingly go out of my way to eat one. Never encountered vegan burger but did have a halloumi burger once and that was very good. Better than meat I'd argue but I don't really like meat that much.

Sidekick app - A Comprehensive Review
Or, if you have a question about it that I've missed covering, I honestly don't know how that happened.
-
I've been using the Sidekick app for about eight months now, so I wanted to write a review - all the thoughts that have come to me as I use it (and I probably do use it three weeks out of every four), so you can decide if it'd work for you.
Firstly, I never planned to get a year's subscription. I planned to let my free month trial roll over for a paid second month, but it charged me for a year straight off. So that's point one to be aware of if you do a free trial. More under the cut because this got LENGTHY.
Ethos
The thinking behind the app, I really like. Using ingredients over multiple meals to prevent waste? An obvious move, but not something I'm great at when left to my own devices!
Having said that, sometimes the amount of ingredient used feels unnecessary - you could use less crème fraiche or fewer herbs for the same result, but we'll use it all because then we've used up the pack (even if dinner now looks like the compost heap after my Dad's mowed the back lawn).
I also really like that nutritional information for the meals is available, but has to be turned on. It's not always good to be looking at calorie counts, especially if you're vulnerable to disordered eating, so having that opt-in instead of opt-out is great.
The calorie counts often feel high for what the meal is, though, and a lot of that is probably the amounts of oil and butter used. So if this is a consideration for you, a quick tip - it's unnecessary most of the time. You can probably halve it, or do two thirds, and be fine.
Quantities
Speaking of, I realise the recipes have been developed by the kitchen team, which from what we've seen in the Sorted videos seems to be all male? So maybe that's driving it, but I eat a reasonable amount - I'm definitely not bird-like or have a 'small appetite' - yet I often get three meals out of every cook (I've got it set to two people, as I like leftovers). Sometimes I even get four decent portions!
When you've then got three meals to make, you're generating anything from six up to twelve portions for the week, or drifting into the following week and hoping the ingredients haven't gone off.
This is more cost-effective and lowers the high calorie counts, but means eating a lot of the same thing. (I could eat down my freezer enough to fit things in it again and save them for later, but hey.) It also means there's no real opportunity, for me and how I end up using the app, of a one-off cook (e.g. pancakes on pancake day, or something I'm randomly craving), but am instead very tied to the pack.
Recipe design
The quality of the recipes is key! And I would say it's usually fair to good - most get 3 or 4 stars out of 5 from me.
I've cooked 47 recipes so far, and there have been a couple that were very bland and needed doctoring, and maybe 6 or 7 really delicious ones I want to keep for life. (There's an amazing mushroom gochujang udon dish, a really easy halloumi tray bake, and a lamb and feta orzo (that I twist and add some extra veg to) that's great.)
I live in the UK, so am closely aligned to what the recipe creators will have available. I'd like to see potential substitute info added, though. (For ages my local supermarket didn't stock ciabatta, which is used in loads of their recipes, and I can only imagine this is more of an issue for those living elsewhere.) The app allows users to post 'twists', so that can be helpful where other people have faced the same issue, but this feels like a relatively easy addition that would be valuable for everyone, but especially those with allergies or more restricted access to global foods. It would also be helpful for vegetarians - if a chicken recipe would work equally well with tofu, you've widened your veggie (or even vegan) recipe offering.
I also find that pack sizes listed don't always match those in the supermarket, but working across multiple stores and serving sizes must be a nightmare (and that's before you consider multiple countries!), so I'll let them off that one 😉
Their shopping list function (which tells you exactly what you need for the week's recipes, and you can check off as you go along) is really clear and easy - it's such a valuable function. Having an extra step of possible substitutes that you could feed through to it would just be the icing on top.
I'm an omnivore, but I'd also like more variety in the make-up of the packs. If you get a "meat" pack you're likely eating meat every day (and the amount of meat per person is normally too high for me - I'll often halve it and sub in some veg, as in the meat meals the veg content can be pretty low). They also often do themed packs - a pasta pack or a Mexican pack - and as someone using this pack for the week, I'd prefer the variety of more packs where you get one Mexican dish, one pasta dish, and one other dish all in the same pack, rather than eating pasta for every meal. (I realise it's designed to be three meals out of a week, but even so, that's a fair amount of pasta, and I love pasta.) More recently released packs do seem to address this a bit more, so maybe it's feedback they've already received.
It might be worth knowing there are currently 110 recipes tagged vegan and 433 tagged vegetarian - so a pretty decent range!
Recipe steps are listed in order, obviously. But these don't always seem the most sensible order - e.g., you boil a kettle right at the beginning, but by the time you get to needing hot water thirty minutes later, you kind of need to re-boil it. Putting that step later on would be more logical. Sometimes things overcook because there wasn't enough time to fit in all the later steps and have things be ready at the same time. You can get around this to an extent by reading through the recipe first and applying common sense/your own cooking expertise, but the app seems designed to do this sort of thing for you and be a real 'beginners and up' tool - it just doesn't quite work in all instances.
Recipes highlight what equipment you need, which is so helpful! A word of advice, though, that their 'medium frying pan' is my largest frying pan. 'Small' is not one of those single-egg frying pans - I don't think they acknowledge the existence of those🤣 Whenever it says a large frying pan, I use a casserole dish, or it WILL end up all over my hob.
Also ensure you have pans that can go from hob to grill/oven, and a mini chopper. They seem able to blend things with a hand blender that I will never manage, but the mini chopper saves me. And you will need it, as a number of the packs include at least one sauce or soup or pesto, so it would take some dodging to only do recipes that don't need pureeing in some fashion. Honestly though - what witchcraft powers their stick blender?
Final thought on recipes - wouldn't it be cool if they include an option to add dessert?
'Benefits'?
The advertising of the app - when they talk about it in their videos - often emphasises there are no "use up" meals. I would disagree with that; in some packs there's a clear shoehorned third to get through the odds and ends! Which is fine, that's how it works sometimes, but own it 😀
Another selling point they promote is that using the app will save you money - this is, of course, all relative. Using a wider variety of ingredients (some of them more specialist) is likely to increase your shop cost, especially in the short term. Similarly, personally the app has encouraged me to eat more meat than I might otherwise just because of what looked good, but that is more expensive. So take that selling point with a pinch of salt, depending on your current eating habits and recipe choices!
The app is great at getting you to try ingredients and recipes you might not have gone to before, though, so for getting out of a cooking rut (which I was in!), it's fantastic. Sometimes this is forced - you get that third recipe you're not sure about (hello corn and kimchi lasagne) along with the two that look really good! - but also just knowing that you'll be told exactly what you need to do makes it easier to take that risk and try new things. (And that lasagne was actually pretty decent, for sounding so weird.)
Timings
In terms of skill level, I would say I'm a middling cook - I'm not a beginner, but also no chef. I can and will go off piste and create decent things from scratch. I've been cooking for myself for over a decade. I'll host friends for dinner and not panic about it. But - and I touched on this earlier with prep taking longer - I can't cook Sidekick recipes in the time allotted!
Are these timings based on the Sorted food team? Their knife skills are going to be better than mine. So are the normals', as after however many years with chef-directed instruction, they're not actually normal any more. I'd appreciate more realistic timings, accounting for the fact that most people will have to get the ingredient out of their cupboard, and weigh it out, and maybe remove the cat from the countertop. Even aside from this kind of time slip, their estimates for how long X takes to brown, or Y takes to boil, always seem too low. If they say Z is cooked now, it probably needs a few more minutes.
I don't know, I'd just prefer a recipe say it takes 40 minutes and it takes 30, than it take an hour, and it's always the latter for me. Probably that's personal preference and other people would find the opposite more annoying. But Sidekick timings given seem to be the absolute quickest possible time, and who is a) able or b) wants to cook at superspeed after a long day?
The app itself
It's really nicely designed and inviting to use, and has several useful features such as being able to guide it's recommendations via marking favourite cuisines, diet types of vegetarian/vegan/pescatarian only, and adding your allergies, dislikes and intolerances. You can also search by ingredient or by cooking time, and packs are coloured according to diet type, so it's really easy to spot veggie or meat or fish packs.
Using it to cook along - the app automatically keeps your phone screen active, which is good. It also includes timers you can set for each stage, really handy, although a niggle I've noticed is that you can't see multiple timers at once without clicking out of the main recipe, and sometimes you will have mutliple going (or one finished, but they don't automatically disappear).
I don't use the voiceover option, but I can see the value in it and having different ways to follow a recipe is cool.
Also great - new recipes are released weekly, so there's always something new!
However, the app is glitchy. Several times it's crashed while rating a recipe, which sometimes pops up a while after you cooked it, as you're trying to cook the next one. It's never yet prevented me from being able to cook (or shop), but it's been close a few times and would be pretty disastrous if you're standing in your kitchen trying to get dinner on the table!
Final thoughts
So. Will I renew my subscription for another year? At this point, I'm not sure. The app makes it easy to eat more variety, easy to choose a week's menu 'in one', easy to shop using the auto-generated shopping list. But I sometimes feel tied in by it, and I'd like a higher hit rate of 'this is delicious' recipes to justify the cost. At the moment I'm leaning towards cancel... we'll see if that changes by April.
If you got to the end of this actual essay (I didn't realise I had SO much to say), congratulations on your staying power! I'm very fond of the Sorted crew since I discovered their YouTube channel about a year ago, and I hope you've found this fair, balanced, and helpful.
Do you subscribe to Sidekick? Or do you want to try it out? 💖

I felt cuuute today. Walked Maggie, we saw all her friends so she had a really good play. Then came home and got dressed, visited my nanna then met my mother in law for lunch. I had a halloumi & butternut squash salad and it was delicious.
Tumblr media
Had a little nap when I got home just because I can since I'm not at work
Tumblr media
Then went out for dinner with Matthew. We had a lovely time and the food was good. Our waiter was also lovely and got me tofu with my noodles instead of meat or fish bc I had just asked for it without either so as to not be a pain in the ass lol. We also got vegan 'ribs' to share and they were really good 😍
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, a bloody lovely bday. I feel so loved and content 🥰🥰🥰

Sorry I haven't responded to any asks in a while, I was making lunch
I made my trademark Hot-Take-Toastie!
Tumblr media
Here's how you can make one for yourself!
You'll need a toaster, a steak knife, a fork (in case the bread gets stuck), and a whole lotta heart!
Step 1: Toast a pita bread, cut it open down the middle with the largest knife you can find!
(Be careful not to cut yourself - but if you do, stick your finger into the sandwich so none of the delicious blood flavour is wasted (blood is still vegan if it's your own, so don't worry!)
I made two, which is 1 serving. But make as many as you like!
Step 2: Add the meat - I sometimes use salami or chicken or sausage, but today I used turkey and calamari! Or, I would've, but the calamari was expired so I had to eat it separately. But turkey is still fine!
(If you're vegan, try a meat substitue like halloumi or mash potato!)
Step 3: To make the meal more substantial, fill the pita with boiled rice! However, because I'm not that hungry, I won't be doing that today!
Step 4: Add the super special ingredient - apple sauce! Be extra generous! Try to cover as much of the contents as possible!
Step 5: Add a dash of table salt to balance the flavours, and always remember to add a little extra love! <3
And you're done! All that's left is presentation - today I placed two vitamin gummies and the medication I should've taken 6 hours ago on top of the sandwich, both to make it even more nutritious and add a splash of colour to the plate, which always makes meals seem to taste even better!
Also, because of the hot weather and sugary goodness, flies will flock to your sandwich and try to steal all that deliciousness for themselves, so don't leave the sandwich unattended. We cannot let them win.
This sandwich pairs best with tap water, medium chilled!
I hope you guys enjoy! *mwah*
See you next time!

top five foods you'd feed glen powell. (this is unhinged, i'm sorry, i've had an entire bottle of wine.)
[ask me my top five anythings!]
His fridge tour in that Men's Health video was a product placement travesty - where's the food??? you live off Cali Water??? - as were most of those vague non-answers where he never actually mentioned what he ate. (My favorite part of those MH himbo videos is the what's in your fridge/what do you eat segments!)
Cheese! This "I don't eat cheese, it is moldy queso" business does not fly with me unless you physically cannot eat cheese for fear of death or veganism. The only instance of "I could fix him" I would ever employ in another human being would be to inspire an appreciation of cheese. Eat a pizza, buddy! Have some lasagna! Gnaw on some aged cheddar. Bake up some Brie. Let Halloumi into your heart. (I also don't understand how a person can be that into college football and not eat nachos. 90% of why I watch the Super Bowl is so that I have an excuse to make nachos! Also is his dislike of cheese limited to savory applications? Is he going through life not eating cheesecake? That's sad.)
Carbs for breakfast! I was tempted to try that sweet potato base breakfast situation he had going on but it did not look appetizing. (Maybe he's a bad cook?) Put it on a croissant! Have a classic bagel & lox sandwich with some nice tomato, capers, red onions. I need more hot men to shill for Russ & Daughters like Jake Gyllenhaal.
The product placement Doritos so we can hang out with Danny Ramirez.
A proper slice of pie, not that garbage Netflix handed him for Hit Man promo that didn't even have an egg wash on it.
I do not know what foods are on a craft services table, but what I'm setting down is chocolate bread pudding (I make the best) or Claire Saffitz's giant ass chocolate chip cookie from Dessert Person. (Each scoop is a quarter cup! It is the size of your hand but so delicious.)

Wasted After Midnight
Tumblr media
@tomorrows-unknown put a bunch of Young!Samy on my dash, so that’s who I’m going to blame for this random Samy/Reader oneshot.
Inspired by this silly post.
You could hear the loud music downstairs. You knew your cousin, Johnny, was having some of his friends over. Ordinarily, you would join in the fun, but you had an important test at school tomorrow. So, for the last few hours, you’d been cooped up in your bedroom, poring over your textbooks.
Suddenly, your phone dinged, alerting you that you’d received a text.
Heyyy, the message read. It’s Samy. Why don’t you come dobnstsirs and party with us?
You stared at the message for a few minutes, before realizing that dobnstsirs was supposed be downstairs.
I didn’t know Johnny invited him, you thought, chuckling. He must be drunk.
Samy was closer to your own age, than your cousin or his bandmates. So, you’d become friends rather quickly. He was an extroverted person, which made him easy to talk to.
I’ll come see you once I finish reading this chapter, you promised him.
Noooouoo, Samy replied. Come see me now! I’m in the kitchen. I made grilled tofu.
You know what tofu is, right? you texted him, chuckling mischievously.
You scrolled through your recent photos, until you found a meme your friend from school had sent you. It was a diagram of a Moomin, with arrows pointing to different body parts. The arrow pointing to the stomach was labeled ‘tofu’, while the arrow pointing to the feet was labeled ‘halloumi’.
You texted him the picture, giggling as you turned the page of your textbook.
Moments later, you were surprised to hear a knock at your door.
“Open up!” Johnny shouted.
“What’s wrong?” you asked as you opened the door. You’d told him earlier that you were studying, and he shouldn’t bother you unless it was an emergency.
“…What the hell did you say to him?” Johnny sighed.
“…Huh?”
You realized, after a moment, that Samy was standing there, wobbling, leaning against Johnny’s arm for support. His face was streaked with tears.
“Johnnnnmmy,” Samy blubbered. “I’m a bad person. I..I’m trying to be a vegan, but I ate a Moomin!”
“…Do you know what he’s talking about?” Johnny asked, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“It was….it was an accident,” Samy sniffled. “Poor Moomintroll…I didn’….I didn’t know…”
“Um, yeah,” you mumbled, staring at the floor. “My bad…I didn’t mean to make him cry.”
“Just…do something to make him feel better, okay?” Johnny grumbled, pushing Samy through the doorway, into your bedroom. “I gotta drive Taz home. I don’t have time for this.”
Samy stumbled forward as Johnny left the room. Instinctively, you reached out to grab him. You could smell the alcohol on his breath.
“Samy, please don’t cry,” you sighed, feeling guilty as you wiped the tears off his face. “It was just a joke.”
“Iss…Iss not really Moomin meat?” Samy asked, looking at you with wet, unfocused brown eyes.
“No, tofu isn’t meat,” you shook your head. “I’m, um, I’m pretty sure it’s made from soybeans.”
The whole situation was ridiculous, but you didn’t want to laugh in his face, when he was so clearly distressed. You knew he had to be absolutely wasted, to believe Moomins were real (even for a second). Hopefully you’d be able to laugh about it together in the morning.
But, at the moment, Samy was clinging to your body, trying not to fall, and looking uncharacteristically sad.
“…Hey,” you suggested, hoping the redness creeping into your cheeks wasn’t obvious, “why don’t you come sit on my bed, before you trip?”
“O-Okay,” Samy sniffled.
You lead him to the foot of the bed, and let go of his arm. As soon as your supportive hand left his shoulder, his balance failed him, and he toppled into your lap.
“Whoa!” you gasped. “C’mon, sit up!”
You’d daydreamed about having him in your bed…but not quite like this. He was beyond trashed, and this wasn’t the time to make a move.
“S-Sorry,” Samy mumbled as he sat upright again. “I didn’t mean to…”
“It’s okay,” you shook your head.
Johnny’s words came back to you: do something to make him feel better.
“Your new tattoo looks nice,” you smiled, brushing his arm with your fingertips.
“Thank you!” Samy beamed. “I got it last week, for my eighteenth birthday.”
“Happy belated birthday,” you smiled.
“I told Johnny to invite you to my party…,” Samy slurred. “But, he said you were doin’ college stuff.”
“Oh, yeah, I probably was,” you laughed. “Are you planning to go to college, now that you’ve graduated high school?”
“Nuh-uh,” Samy shook his head. “My friends and I - we’re gonna be rockstars.”
“Is that so?” you giggled.
“Yeah!” Samy insisted, grabbing your hand. “We really are. I pinky promise.”
“Okay,” you grinned, allowing him to wrap his pinky finger around your own. “Then I promise I’ll go see you at the Ice Hall, when you sell the place out one day.”
“Hell yeah we will!” Samy grinned. “And, um…”
He trailed off for a moment, looking embarrassed.
“Please don’t tell Arttu or Mirko that you saw me cry,” Samy said softly. “I don’t want them to call me an emo, or a f…”
“So what if you’re an emo?” you interrupted him, glancing up at the Black Parade poster on your bedroom wall. “I happen to like emo boys.”
“No wayyyy,” Samy shook his head emphatically. “I’m not an emo! I’m a tough metalhead.”
“Right,” you grinned slyly. “So tough that you cried because I convinced you that you ate a cartoon character?”
“I, um,” Samy mumbled, playing with a long, dark strand of his hair, “I promise I’m not this dumb when I’m sober.”
“I hope you’re sober next time you come over, then,” you blushed, as you tucked the hair behind his ear. “Because there’s something I’d really like to give you right now - but it’s wrong to give it to a drunk person.”
Samy’s face heated up, when he realized how close your lips were to his own.
“Y-You could give it to me now,” he stammered.
“Nope,” you insisted. “Sorry. I don’t kiss wasted people- or Moomin killers”.

What is your favorite type of these? I’m a big cheese lover as well. Tried a new cheese today caramelized jack cheese it was so delicious🧀🪤
Hi Nonny!
Oh that sounds nice. Don’t start me rhapsodising about cheese, I will talk your ear off! 😂 I know I could never be vegan cos the vice grip cheese has over me. 🤷‍♀️
I have so many favourites! From panir to brie to Yarg. But if I have to narrow it down to say two all-time faves - I cannot live without a good British cheddar and I am addicted to grilled halloumi like you wouldn’t believe.
Thanks for your ask 😁🧡🧡
