You know how in Carmilla, vampires spend most of the day unconscious in a coffin filled with blood, like the undead version of a spa day? Yeah. Pandora deserves a little treat now and then.

In the spirit of the season, I made this picture of The Vampire Pandora for a friend not on tumblr. <3 I really wanted to be extremely indulgent and draw a pretty roman lady with a sunset, so this Pandora when she is still mortal, pre-Dark Gift.

How I think the VC characters would feel about the pumpkin spice latte

Lestat: obsessed, can’t get enough, fall girl 100%

Louis: curls his lip up in distaste at the thought

Armand: fascinated by the concept and definitely enjoys it now and again

Daniel: tried it once because Armand begged him, but it’s a liiiiittle too sugary for his taste

Marius: probably likes it more than he cares to admit

Thorne: a fun treat for every once and a while, but not something he would order consistently

Santino: It is evil and indulgent! 😡

Quinn: thinks it’s kinda mid but drinks it for the aesthetic because he’s a dork

Nicki: actively makes fun of people who drink it

Mael: what’s a pumpkin spice latte?

Jesse: prefers it iced 😔

Seth: no hate but he doesn’t prefer it

Fareed: tried it once and that was enough

Khayman: he thinks it’s absolutely delightful

Pandora: prefers the iced pumpkin cream chai

Bianca: thinks it’s super cute and totally gets it as a more-than-occasional treat

Gabrielle: doesn't get the point of flavoured coffee in general

Daniel and Pandora arguing over what to watch while Marius pretends not to care but sighs very deeply when something he dislikes is finally agreed upon.

Which all becomes moot anyhow when Armand comes into the room, snatches the remote, and fires up YouTube because they absolutely must see this video of a goat walking along a fence in the middle of a forest fire.

Woke up thinking about how every time Marius tries to connect with someone after leaving Pandora it seems to end in disaster.*

He tries to connect with Avicus but Mael is there (disaster).

He tries to connect with Eudoxia but she incites a human mob to burn his house, then he has to watch Akasha execute her.

He brings Amadeo into his life which sets off a chain of events that ends with him, his house, and most of his loved ones being burned this time, and Amadeo indoctrinated into the cult he hated.

IDK whether to count Bianca as he brings her to him not out of loneliness or a desire for connection but for the more utilitarian reason that he's too injured to hunt alone, but in any case it doesn't exactly end well (although no one actually dies so as far his relationships go it's not the worst ending).

He's alone for ages again then he reaches out to Lestat, who immediately almost gets himself killed by Enkil by acting rashly and ultimately succeeds, decades later, in waking Akasha with his music, at which point she buries Marius under tonnes of ice and starts a campaign of mass slaughter with the aim of world domination.

It's not a great track record! Looking at this it's not so surprising he tends to isolate himself a lot. Like, I'm surprised he went to Night Island at all.

*Also if I was being really cynical I'd wonder if Akasha manipulated any of the above to work out worse to punish him for leaving Pandora. But probably not.

do you think the women in anne rice’s books have the same problems lesbians do irl. like do they try for relationships that are blatantly a bad idea because they’re so lonely. do the tulane drafts show gabrielle and bianca having whatever the vampire equivalent of a one-night stand is and then realizing when gabrielle tries to dig them both holes in the ground that it Will Not Work Out

You really gotta admire Marius and his "never give up" spirit. He just knows that the 259th gift he's given Pandora is what will really do the trick, and NOT cause her to throw him in the ocean!

@monstersinthecosmos and I were talking and she dug up this exchange Anne had with someone on Fanpop back in the day, concerning vampires' love and sexuality. There were quite a few fascinating tidbits but these are my favorites:

I see them [vampires] as transcending matters of gender or age. Lestat loves Louis. Louis loves Claudia. Armand loves Lestat. Lestat loves Gabrielle. There is no distinct difference in the quality of any of these loves. This has also been described as polymorphous sensuality.

"--- Armand is desperately in love with Lestat but it has nothing to do with sex. Armand feels Marius failed him and Marius feels Armand failed him, and that part has nothing to do with sex. Marius and Pandora, that is a love affair, but again sex has nothing to do with it. So they are all capable of loving people of their own gender and the other gender; gender doesn't matter. It's the essence. Lestat loves David Talbot as a lover, a friend, a mentor, a father, etc. --- It goes on like that. The act of dominating and drinking blood can happen between any two characters regardless of gender. They cannot be pinned down. They see all life as potentially beautiful and all forms of love as rewarding."

I'm verklempt at the fact Anne mentioned Armand and Lestat in the same vein as Armand and Marius and Marius and Pandora, but also I love how much she emphasizes that they can cannot be pinned down and all that forms of love are rewarding!

It's just such a revolutionary way of thinking especially when you consider that she was a woman born in the 1940s in the American South. She may have missed the beat on some things but on others, she was right on the fucking money.

Outside of the obvious (Lestat reading IwtV, then starting a rockband, writing his own autobiography, and waking Akasha in the process), which vampire's reaction to another's book do you think was most explosive/massive/life changing? Which caused a fight or long conversations or made people avoid each other?
