You’ve known Qiu is popular since the first day. You’ve known that you’re new. And you’ve known that valentines cards and boxes of chocolates ‘don’t really matter in the long run’ or so your mom has said. But seeing the few simple cards that lay in your hands kind of hurt. A few cards from other kids, but the number stayed the same as most of the class passed out their treats. The class had been passing out their valentines treats in alphabetical order, most having gotten them only for their friends.

The list made its way down to Q, when one of your few friends approached you; Qiu Lin. The apple of your eye, the objects of your affections, and your first crush in fifth grade. You could hear the feet walk across the carpeted floor before seeing them stop in front of your desk as something was placed on top of it. You looked up at them, seeing their cute smile before they walked away to hand out the rest.

While for some, a treat from the Qiu Lin was a simple courtesy, for you it was time stopping. A chocolate bar of your favorite kind and a handmade card. On the brown notebook paper, the same kind that started it all, was a sweet piece of writing. ‘I’m really glad we’re friends! Happy valentines, Qiu Lin.’

The simple card made some blood rush to your face. The only other card that was given to you that day was from Tamarack. It was sweet, but in your heart it didn’t hold a candle to the card from Qiu.

Soon after, school ended. Your small pile of valentines was easy to carry, while Qiu’s larger haul was more impressive. Tamarack’s pile, like yours, wasn’t anything too big. You smiled, catching up to Qiu’s pace. On the top of his pile was a small heart shaped card, the one you had given them. “Thanks for the note, Qiu. And the chocolates…” you said, looking at them before looking forward again. “It’s no problem! Thanks for yours, too.” Qiu gave you a smile also.

All you knew at that moment was that you wanted to spend many more valentines with them. And you would.

I had to do a double-take for a bit with this, because my brain processed tango in the spicy way for a moment, before I went "OH! CHICAGO!" at the top of my lungs. But oh my good gods yes.

"Yance, I really think you'd like this!"

You held up your phone to the plexiglass, watching his eyes alight as he watched the whole routine play. By the last parts of the song, Yancy was already humming the tune, eager to memorize it.

This had been the trend for you both, for your last couple of visitations. You'd watch a musical, figure out which song he would like, and play it for him. It always helped spark a new burst of creativity, and gave him an outlet he could focus on that would help as he worked hard on being able to apply for parole. It also let you make a list of movies for when he did get parole, that you could watch together.

Chicago was one you weren't sure of first, especially playing one of the most recognizable numbers from it in the penitentiary, but you had passed the idea by the warden first, and somehow he gave the okay. You weren't going to look a gift in the mouth, and told Yancy the loose plot. He was uncertain until he saw the Cell Block Tango. Sure, the outfits made his cheeks flush, but you knew he was hooked when you saw that particular little crease between his eyebrows, the way his eyes seemed to track the movements even as you watched his fingers tap to the beat.

It'd be another to add to your list, then.

Third Sunday was here again, but for the first time in months, you'd missed your chance to watch a musical to tell him about it. You knew he would understand, what with work piling more on your plate, but it still nagged softly at you.

Yancy picked up his side with a sheepish little grin, ducking his head.

"So, I gots somethin' to tells ya."

"Hmm? What is it?"

"I know we was gonna watch it together, but I asked the warden, and uh. Me and the gang got permission to actually watch it, and...I know youse is makin' that list, but..."

"Wait, Murder-Slaughter let you actually watch Chicago?"

"Yeah! I think he realized we tend to behave better when we gots somethin' to focus on that ain't, you know. Stabbin' or fightin' or whatever. And the gang and I've been workin' on learnin' the choreography for that song. I wanted to see if I could surprise ya with that, but some of the gang's got their own visitors today. We almost got it figured out! So...maybe...maybe youse can give him the list, and...and it'll still be special. Cuz it came from youse."

"I'm going to have to come up with a whole new watch list for us, then."

Yancy's smile widened, leaning forward to rest his hand on the plexiglass, watching as you pressed your hand to the other side. "Watchin' anythin' you recommend is special. I'm lookin' forward to that date."

this valentine’s day i would like to profess my undying, ardent love for the callistephus chinensis (china aster)! the flower that contributed to me giving myself my name!!

not only are they a part of the (superior in my opinion) family of asteraceae, but also the genus’ (callistephus) etymology is derived from the greek words “kalli-” meaning “beautiful” and “stephos” meaning crown. they have beautiful chrysanthemum-esque blooms and come in all sorts of colours (my favourites being purple and white).

straying away from taxonomy a bit, asters in general are one of the birth flowers for september (my birth month!). they symbolise hope, faith and wisdom. and according to greek mythology, astraea (“star maiden”: goddess of purity, justice and innocence) cried because there weren't enough stars in the sky and when her tears hit the earth, they caused asters to bloom! continuing to follow the greek myth, she was the last goddess to live amongst the humans after the golden age, symbolising the decline of hope for humanity along with the decline of the ages. she left and became the constellation virgo i believe!

some more fun fun facts, asters have a most frequently observed number of n = 9 haploid chromosomes (2n = 18 for diploid). the numerology of the word “aster” also happens to be nine and guess what! september is the 9th month of the year! is it obvious i really like the number 9? almost as much as i love asters <3

You were a little nervous about how Valentine's Day was going to work.  Back on Earth, you hadn't really celebrated it: too busy with all the work it took to become captain. But now, this was the first time you'd get to celebrate it, and to make it even more nerve-wracking, it wasn't like you only had one partner.

Oh no. You had four.

Your crew leads had worked it out between themselves before any of them came forward to you, and it ended up as a discussion you all had after one of your group meetings, but it was still incredibly new. You didn't even know really what to do, and you were dating all the ones who would give you advice in the first place. With no one left to go to, you were sure to be the partner who'd disappoint them all. An irrational part of you knew that they wouldn't all break up with you if you didn't, but was still afraid that could happen.

But then the date night came, and you had no idea what to do or to expect. You had walked back from your office, wondering just what you were going to do, when your door opened before you could get your keys out. There were the four of them, dressed nicely, waiting for you.

"Wh-" was all you could get out before Celci grabbed your hands, tugging you inside.

"Go on, go take a shower, go relax," she all but ordered, kissing your cheek.

"Dinner'll be ready soon," was Burt's short reply, the soft smile letting you know that he had only stepped away to greet you.

"I've got the romantic lighting all under control, Cap'n." 

Gunther clapped Mark on the back, making the man rock on his feet. Out of all of them, he seemed the most nervous. "We'll be waiting for you," he added softly, smiling at you in the way that only the two of you truly understood.

Despite their encouragement for you to relax, you still hurried through your shower. You hadn't done anything, but they were making you dinner, had dressed up...maybe you should to? But your wardrobe hadn't really been prepared for dressing nice. Formal occasions, work functions, casual clothes...you didn't have much. You had to settle with the nicest casual clothes you had. Everything else was strictly work or incredibly formal things where you had to make an appearance as Captain.

None of them minded, it turned out. Even as they bustled about, making you sit at your table and not work, they all stopped by to give you a brief kiss, laughing and smiling. Even Celci and Mark's unending feud came to a pause this evening.

When they all disappeared for a moment, you got worried, until they appeared carrying dish after dish, leaving your mouth watering. You blinked, realizing everything was all the foods you loved. You choked up, tears threatening to fall for a moment.

"We couldn't agree who'd get the first shot at a date with you," Gunther leaned back in his chair, chewing on the end of his cigar.

"So, instead, we compromised and all planned this together." Celci reached over to the ADS lead, setting his sunglasses on top of his head. The tender look they shared made you realize there might be more between the two of them too, after all this.

"It is better to share the love we have than hoard it," Burt sniffed, shifting his glass a little to the left for an unseen reason.

Mark grabbed your hand in both of his, kissing the knuckles. "Tonight's all about you."

"But...but I didn't get anything for any of you!" You had to protest. This was all too much, and you couldn't just get away with doing nothing.

The four of them shared a look, all shaking their heads or sighing.

"Captain," Mark squeezed your hand gently. "You've done more for all of us than any of us could ever do for you. You love us. That's all we could ask for in the universe."
