If you want to know what the US would be like during a second Trump-Pence-Vance administration, just visit some red states.
Utah has just unleashed a wave of book bans and almost all the banned authors are female.
Books by Margaret Atwood, Judy Blume, Rupi Kaur and Sarah J Maas are among 13 titles that the state of Utah has ordered to be removed from all public school classrooms and libraries. This marks the first time a state has outlawed a list of books statewide, according to PEN America’s Jonathan Friedman, who oversees the organisation’s free expression programs. The books on the list were prohibited under a new law requiring all of Utah’s public school districts to remove books if they are banned in either three districts, or two school districts and five charter schools. Utah has 41 public school districts in total. The 13 books could be banned under House bill 29, which became effective from 1 July, because they were considered to contain “pornographic or indecent” material. The list “will likely be updated as more books begin to meet the law’s criteria”, according to PEN America. Twelve of the 13 titles were written by women. Six books by Maas, a fantasy author, appear on the list, along with Oryx and Crake by Atwood, Milk and Honey by Kaur and Forever by Blume. Two books by Ellen Hopkins appear, as well as Elana K Arnold’s What Girls Are Made Of and Craig Thompson’s Blankets.
Utah is looking for a way of "legally" disposing of the books because burning them would invite obvious comparisons with Nazis.
Implementation guidelines say that banned materials must be “legally disposed of” and “may not be sold or distributed”. PEN America Freedom to Read programme director Kasey Meehan said that such “vague” guidelines will “undoubtedly result in dumpsters full of books that could otherwise be enjoyed by readers” and that while they stop short of “calling for book burning, the effect is the same: a signal that some books are too dangerous”. Let Utah Read, a coalition of organisations, librarians, teachers and parents among others, has started a petition to “fix the ‘sensitive materials’ law”. “It is a dark day for the freedom to read in Utah,” said Meehan. The list of banned books “will impose a dystopian censorship regime across public schools and, in many cases, will directly contravene local preferences. Allowing just a handful of districts to make decisions for the whole state is anti-democratic.”
I hope that Utah school library users and librarians manage to hide the books so that the MAGA book-banning fascists can't destroy them.
The Republican Party which gave us Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, Ron DeSantis, and Marjorie Taylor Greene runs Utah with an iron fist. Republicans have given up on even the pretense of freedom. They have unapologetically gone full blown authoritarian. As such, they should not be entrusted with any elected office at any level in the United States.

The thing that really makes me upset when people try to make the "they're the same candidate" argument about Biden and Trump with respect to America's complicity in the genocide Israel is committing — putting aside literally any thought not directly tied to that exact issue — is that they're not even exactly the same on that front.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, I'm not going to lie to you and say that I like Biden's response here any more than you do. But one of these candidates has responded to protests with silence, and the other one thinks that your first amendment rights shouldn't apply on this issue.
Not only are there a mountain of tiebreaker issues that you could use to determine that one of these presidents is meaningfully less awful than the other, the issue where they're supposedly the same level of awful takes less than a minute's worth of googling to show that there are significant differences in the approach here that are one hundred percent worth choosing a side between.

I’ve heard so many people say that they don’t vote because it will make no difference, that because we live in a deep red state a democrat will never win.
But in our governor race right now the democrat is still polling at 26% so if all those non-voters who have given up on making a difference actually voted for the democrat, I firmly believe that the democrat would stand a fighting chance. At the very least we could prove that we are here and a growing, fighting force to be reckoned with.
There are a lot of conservatives in this state, yes. But I know so so many liberals and progressives and even moderates who are fed up with the bullshit our republican leadership pulls time and time again, who are sick of our leadership bowing to the demands of The Church (if you are in Utah, you know what I’m talking about). And I think if you forced everyone in this state (not that you should or could) to vote, the outcome would be a lot more left-leaning than people expect. I’d argue that the strong conservativeness is actually forming a powerful counter culture in response - which is why Bernie sanders polled way better than Hillary Clinton here.
fellow left-leaning and moderate Utahns, please stop disenfranchising yourselves. There are more of us than you realize. We have more power than you realize. And the conservatives want us to give in to that hopelessness, because they know we have power. Why else would they keep undermining our voter initiatives? Why else would they resort to cheap measures and confusing language to try and trick us into voting for things like Constitutional Amendment D without following proper procedures?

Friday, October 18, 2024 - Tim Walz
Liz Cheney joined the Governor for a day of campaigning in the state of Utah. The 'official' schedule of today's events is below.
Provo, UT Event Location: North Park and Cherry Hill Neighborhoods Event Type: Door Knocking Event Time: 8:00 - 11:00 MT *Kicking off the morning with breakfast at the Brunch House, a local Provo restaurant, the campaign had very positive interactions with workers and fellow patrons. The campaign then hit the ground running carrying out 3 hours of door knocking in two neighborhoods in Provo, Utah—North Park and Cherry Hill.
Salt Lake City, UT (Event #1) Event Location: Steps of the Utah State Capitol Event Type: Campaign Speech Event Time: 13:00 - 15:00 MT *The full-text of this speech will be released shortly. This stop is unique in that the Governor was not the speaker at the Capitol, Liz Cheney, a unique campaign surrogate was the speaker.
Salt Lake City, UT (Event #2) Event Location: University of Utah Event Type: Get Out the Vote Event Time: 17:00 - 21:00 MT *The campaign wrapped up the day by launching a Get Out the Vote initiative on-campus at the University of Utah. Youth voters continue to be a major target for our campaign as they understand that we are defending the democracy that they are set to inherit, and that we are campaigning for a new generation of leaders to take the reigns of our republic. While there were many students who let us know they couldn't consolidate their religious view with our tickets, our campaign positions were well received.

🚨Important! If you live in Utah, tomorrow (10/25) is the last day you can register to vote online!
You can still register to vote in person up until 11/5, but I recommend registering online since it is much quicker. Even if you don’t plan on voting, you should still register. You might change your mind and decide you do want to vote!
Click here to register to vote!
I also have a list of voting resources here:

I live in Utah, a state that has notoriously NEVER been anything but red since the fucking FIFTIES. This election cycle, every advertisement, billboard, and lawn sign for every down ballot race here has all been for a Republican candidate. Republicans are running against OTHER Republicans here! No joke, I've seen ads for the candidates for governor, again BOTH Republican, accusing each other of being "too woke." I have not seen one single ad fir a Democrat candidate for ANY local election.
I have a friend in the state legislature who runs as a Republican and I know for a fact that he isn’t on board with the party line. I outright asked him why he runs as a Republican if he doesn't believe in their policies. His answer: "I want to win."
If anywhere, my vote for a non-Republican candidate won't count for ANYTHING. I still vote, because the alternative is throwing up my hands and saying "fuck it, let the rest of the country become Utah."
You do NOT want the rest of the country to become Utah.
Every time I advocate for voting people are like "no you shouldn't vote! Read this literature, it'll totally change the way you view voting!" And every single time it's the same fucking "you shouldn't vote because both parties are exactly the same so it won't make a difference who wins" bullshit wrapped up in some fancy language
