In El Paso there’s an interchange on I-10 we call the Spaghetti Bowl that I used to have to navigate as a college student (who was a reluctant driver in the first place) and it has forever been my touchstone for how scary a given length of interstate is. So far nothing else has compared. Read this news article from a few years ago and tell me this isn’t describing an eldritch horror…

This 4th of July I’m stealing the patriotism euphoria that’s usually associated with assholes idolizing the worst attributes of this country because fuck ‘em I live here too and remembering the things this country actually got Right is an important exercise when trying to rally anyone to want to defend it in November SO putting my money where my mouth is I’ll start easy and say I really like National Parks!! It’s rad how many of them there are and how they’re actual set up to preserve some of the most beautiful wild areas in our country while still letting people visit to enjoy and experience nature!! (Less important but I love how they put national parks on the quarters I think that’s real fun)

Adding onto say that a lot of freeways/interstates have a highway/US-route equivalent. For example, I-95 goes up the coast, but so does Route 1 (Atlantic Highway). So, yes, very plausible that if the interstate is traffic-y, you have a highway option RIGHT THERE a lot of the time. In the midwest, the highway option might be less 1-to-1 and you may find yourself wandering through the corn in big 1/2 mile to mile grid-system country roads because that's how the land was divided out there way-back when.

Expressways do have common names that *only people in that area know.* If you're driving around Chicago, for example, and say you're on the Reagan expressway, or the Eisenhower, someone who's *not* from Chicago will have no clue what you're talking about (very specific portion of I-88 and I-290). If you're places with no-tolls (Ohio, for example), you're going to be upset and surprised when you stumble on places where tolls are the norm (Chicago), and likely unprepared since these days, digital-tolling with an EZ-pass or I-pass has become more common and it's harder to pay with cash.

Highways and interstates with Odd numbers (usually end in 5) go nOrth/sOuth and highways with Even numbers go East/wEst. They increase in number going west to east, starting with 5 in California and ending with 95 on the east coast, 10 down south and 90 up north. If it's a 3-number interstate, it's a "special" connection (i.e., a beltway going around a city or connecting the interstate to another point of interest before often hooking back up with the same or another interstate. The last two numbers of a three-digit interstate relate to the actual interstate it's a part of (so 290 above is the beltway around Chicago and it's part of interstate 90).

I could go more into driving culture on interstates in different parts of the country (Tennessee uses all lanes of the highway equally without regard for passing, Maine is a very strict "keep right except to pass" kind of place), on-ramp etiquette, passing etiquette, etc. because locals WILL GET MAD at tourists for not following unspoken local rules but. I have rambled enough.

Perisex person here, asking purely out of curiosity: why are there so many different terms for not-intersex? Like dyadic, perisex, endosex, juxtasex. Are there differences in meaning or connotation? Is there some kind of complex history behind it or do people just not agree? It's interesting that there isn't a consensus for one word. Also, while I'm at it, is there one you personally feel would be best for me to use?

Hey! So they are slightly different in meaning and usage, even though they all basically mean the same thing. I'll share what i've learned, but other intersex people please feel free to add on your intepretations-a lot of this is going to depend on what intersex spaces you're in. There's not one right answer and I only have one perspective!

Dyadic: have seen this used online at least as early as 2011, most likely was being used earlier than that. some intersex people don't like it because they think that since it is based in the prefix "dyad" which means two, that it still reinforces the sex binary. I personally really like the term compulsory dyadism and think that's an incredibly useful concept, but don't use dyadic as much anymore because I don't think it is as popular a term and I want to avoid confusion.

Perisex: coined on tumblr around like....2014? Seems to be used mostly on tumblr. I don't think I've ever seen any in depth critiques of the term but I tend not to use it as much because it hasn't really caught on in any other intersex spaces. nothing wrong with using it, just my preference. Some people in the notes added on that it’s the preferred term in their country, which is awesome!

endosex: coined by Heike Bödeker, a German intersex activist in 2000. Endo means "inner" or "internal" and is used to signify that someone fits within the constructed sex binary. This is the term that seems to be most widely used in physical intersex spaces, and also is used more internationally. For that reason, this is definitely the term I prefer-although we aren't at a consensus in intersex spaces, this seems to be the most popular term in the region I'm in, and lots of resources, materials, language guides, etc, are starting to use it. Of course, that could always change and that's fine!

juxtasex: have never heard it before now. i never have problems with intersex people creating more language to describe our experiences, but am not familiar with it at all!

I would personally recommend sticking with endosex--I think that is the terms you are going to get the most recognition with. It hasn't really become popular on tumblr, because most of us who blog about intersex stuff use perisex or dyadic, but I think that endosex is a really good term to use irl if you want to talk about intersex topics.

Not sure if there's anything official- based only on a vaguely similar shape and location and seemingly supported by the map pictures released by Dreamworks TV recently, would Yaz's island be Frank Island in Yellowstone National Park? Only for JWE2 building reference purposes 😁

It's possible it was used for some visual inspiration, but I think the EXACT location in Wyoming was probably meant to be a little vague, as a fictional location.

Garland Cowl by Galzanne Knits.

Made this delightful cowl for a friend's birthday using hand-painted pure mulberry silk by Araucanía Yarns (which appears to be a thing they no longer make?? We won't talk about how long I've had this stashed). The big worsted-weight lace was a lot of fun and worked up quickly once I got my gauge issues sorted out. I'd never worked with silk before! I'm a fan. Learned a new cast on for this, and I turned my bamboo knitting needles and fingers VERY blue, but I sort of like when my crafts stain my hands--it's bright evidence that I'm Out Here Making Things, y'know?
