Yes disabled USamericans don't hurt yourself and POC USamericans don't hurt yourself and queer/trans USamericans don't hurt yourself, but this one goes out to all the queer/trans disabled USamericans of color! Those of you who are surviving and living on the intersection of three now very heavily marginalized identities. I specifically need you to live on too.

Election Doomerism: Let’s Talk About It
Note: this post is going to be focusing on trying to be helpful for people who find that someone giving them “the harsh truth” is helpful. Aka, if you prefer that people take a softer approach with your feelings, this post is NOT for you. Reminded that you’re choosing to read this of your own free will, so if you don’t like anything I have to say, it is literally not my problem, because you chose to read this. That being said, proceed with caution.
Yeah so Trump won the election. Big whoop. I’ll be honest, I really didn’t expect him to win. It very much took me by surprise- especially by HOW much he won.
If anything, I think it’s less concerning that he’s going to be president and more concerning that so many people voted for him.
Here’s the thing though: we’ve been through it before. Yeah, no, I’m not saying it’s not gonna be worse this time around. But also the world is not ending. So stop fucking acting like it is.
Hell, I see you all post these Gaza fundraisers and saying shit like “have hope for Gaza!” They’re literally being bombed, and just because some asshole wound up as president you think the world is ending? What happened to putting yourself in their shoes? Like things could be a LOT fucking worse, and they are for a LOT of people.
“People are going to die from this” yup. Yeah, they are. People who don’t deserve to die are going to die as a direct result from this. There is nothing you can do to change that. Accept it, and try your best to mitigate the damage that’s going to be done. Because guess what? People were still being murdered for being trans, gay, colored, Jewish, Muslim, etc. over the last 4 years. And guess what. People were still gonna be murdered for being trans, gay, colored, Jewish, Muslim, etc. in the next 4 years if she was president. Will it be more? Yes. But her becoming president wasn’t going to solve that.
“What’s there to live for anymore” idk man I ate a mushroom shaped cheesecake today. That was pretty baller. I’m sure I can do that in the next 4 years too. Quite honestly, the last Trump presidency had basically no effect on my day-to-day life. I’m willing to bet it’ll largely be the same for most of you.
There are still people fighting for YOUR rights, and you just wanna give up? What kind of thanks is that? Also how are you helping anyone or yourself by doing that?
There are people who have it MUCH worse than we’re going to have it here that are doing perfectly fine. And you know what? There are places that are doing a LOT better than us that still have the same issues we’re facing.
Things suck but they could be so much worse. We could literally be in Gaza getting bombed. We could be in Sudan starving. You wanna do something positive? Keep fighting for them. Because you still have a LOT more privilege than any of them do.
Anyway.

listen i wont tell ya how to vote, that's not how i get, but if you call the people (most of whom are people of color and people directly effected by the attempts to exterminate Palestinians) who are critical of kamala 'anti-voters' i think you just might not actually be listening to them, and are instead acting on knee jerk emotion. if you really want to change someone's mind, you have to understand their argument-- something many of yall clearly are struggling with

I was talking with my dad tonight and told him that today i am surprisingly not nervous about my upcoming top surgery but I am nervous about my job without much of a founded reason so i think that my nerves are like finding something to project my nervousness onto, and he was like (paraphrasing) "well you could worry about the election and the risk to our democracy if trump were to get elected again and how it's not only your future at stake but your (general you) children's future as well 😊 you're welcome"
He meant it genuinely, he was sincerely trying to help, and it was good to talk to him/talking to him generally did make me feel better, but OOF
#doom tw#us election tw#as we were wrapping up talking because he was about to go to bed#i ended up unexpectedly having to make the weakest and least informed argument for police abolition#my argument doesnt matter that much because hes the type of person to look into these things himself#so i was more just introducing the idea#but like badly#i sent him the link to the police abolition movement wikipedia page after we hung up and he said he'll check it out#so its okay#but DOUBLE OOF

while I do remember ‘Russian bots’, I also remember the wave of black bloggers who were harassed and accused of being bots and trump supporters and driven off this site in waves, be it by white Hilary supporters or the site itself, all bc they spoke openly abt how antiblack the Clintons were. If you wanna claim that the Palestinian and black bloggers who hate Biden are bots, I mean I guess no one is stopping you, but I personally want to not see a repeat of the vicious racism towards people of color who happen to have different opinions on how democracy should work than I do again. You don’t have to like people who are choosing not to vote. But you don’t get to silence their voices using the exact same racist excuse as last time.
Just a thought for the night, but remember in 2016 there were all these accounts that seemed really really telling you all the ways Hillary Clinton was some kind of demon woman, just the worst, and really Trump wouldn't be worse and maybe he'd even be better?
and then it turned out they got banned for being literally Russian agents and never came back because spoiler they were?
does it feel like that all over again? just a thought.

I was a student at UC Berkeley during the 2000 presidential election. The propaganda at that time was that Al Gore and George W. Bush were exactly the same candidate wearing different ties. There was no difference between them, so you should vote for Ralph Nader.
In 2016 the propaganda was Bernie Bros—and going both ways ("Hillary is an establishment candidate! You're not a real liberal if you don't vote for Bernie!" and also "Bernie will never win! If you EVER supported Bernie you're not a real liberal!").
This time the propaganda was Gaza. "How can you vote for a candidate that is a part of an administration responsible for GENOCIDE?!"
The thing with propaganda is it's always true—kind of. You can go right down the list and see the truth in all of these things:
Both Al Gore and George W. Bush were establishment candidates. Al Gore was the sitting vice president and a career politician and George W. Bush was the son of former president and vice president George Bush, who himself was vice president to Ronald Reagan.
HIllary Clinton was an establishment politican, the wife of a former president, and the sitting secretary of state. Bernie Sanders didn't have the party support to become the Democratic Party candidate on account of his history of independence.
Biden and Harris were in office during the Hamas attack on October 7th, 2023, and the US government has offered continued support to Israel in its couteroffensive.
Those things are true. But the true things were being used to distract the distractible from other arguably more important true things, e.g. that Al Gore's actual policies were more liberal than George W. Bush's; Hillary Clinton's policies were more liberal than Donald Trump's; and a Kamala Harris-led government was going to be better for Palestine than a Donald Trump-led government.
The goal with the propaganda each time was exaclty the same. It wasn't to get votes for a third party candidate or change policy or help Gaza.
The goal was to get liberals not to vote.
And it worked. Every time.
It'll work again, too, if we don't teach voters how to recognize this. It's pretty obvious though. If it's near an election and it's a wedge issue between liberal voters and ultra-liberal voters, that's the propaganda.
And it is 100% active and alive here on Tumblr.

hey i just wanted to say thank you for all the reassuring and kind posts in the middle of us election bc it’s such a tumultuous time and i feel so unsure about everything because it’s so devastating. we need all the reassurance we can get. i don’t even know what i will do now
You're welcome. I'm very scared too. But I have decided that if these events make me hurt myself, the people who made this happen will just get another victory. And doubly so for the people more marginalized than myself. Our continued existence, our care, our compassion, our continued attempts to do good, they still matter and they are important resistance even if we can't immediately fix the world

Just in case Trump wins:
right after Trump was elected in 2016, suicidality skyrocketed. If you’re considering suicide in the wake of the election this year, at least wait until after it’s absolutely certain that he’s won - after every vote has been counted, every state certified, and maybe even after he’s been sworn in (IF he wins), just to make sure he doesn’t go to prison instead. Watch the results come in live here, but don’t obsess or let them sway your vote. (To be clear, I don’t want a single person to commit suicide over the election results, no matter what. But I know from experience that “don’t do it” is thoroughly unhelpful, so instead I’m saying at least wait.)
if you’re considering suicide because you fear worsening material conditions, you might think a hotline can’t help with that. and it’s true that they can’t change legislation or promise you’ll be safe. but it’s worth double checking whether what you’re actually hurting from is in fact unfixable. right now, just getting through the emotions can help you regain a more objective view of the situation, and then you can work on surviving it. plus, when something bad happens, we tend to vastly overestimate how bad it will seem in the future, no matter how bad it actually is.
In my experience, it might take a few tries before you find a hotline that picks up, either because they’re so busy, or they’re closed at that time, or they simply don’t serve your location or demographic, so under the thingy I’ve listed more than just the same handful that tend to show up on other websites. Even if you’re not actively suicidal, you can talk to them about your hard feelings, ask for material resources, or just vent to a compassionate listener.

FYI, Vance used illegal guns coming through the border as a defense argument for why school shootings occur so frequently in the USA, however statistics show the majority of gun violence here is committed with legally obtained guns.
